Since the killing of george floyd, the black man who died after a minneapoliskneeled on h nearly nine minutes. More than 40 cities opposed curfews to attempt to stem the violence. The National Guard is activated in 26 states as well as washington, d. C. Thats right, jim. This is a nation in trauma, a nation reckoning with what it is and what it stands for this morning, a nation confronting the ugly reality of racism and couple all of this with an economy reaching Great Depression joblessness, disproportionately hurting black americans, this is america today. We have reporters across the nation. First omar jiminez joins us this morning in minneapolis. What can you tell us about the weekend . Reporter well, poppy and jim, for days now, every morning we have been out on the site of the destruction of violence and looting and at times rioting from the night before. This is what the aftermath of peaceful protests looks like. We are at the site of where george floyd was pinned to the ground here. You see this is his makeshift memorial that has only grown by the day, even down to the spot where he was pinned again in that video that we have seen for now a week in the outline painted with those words i cant breathe. I cant breathe. Of course since the week ago, when we learned and saw at least the beginning moments of what had led to his death, we had seen every Night Protests during the day, that then devolved into violence at times and looting, and rioting in the evening times, and then in the mornings, we saw a cleanup as well. We knew over the weekend the turning point essentially came when we saw the largest Law Enforcement presence we have seen yet come on saturday, and that maybe was the most violent clashes we had seen between police and between protesters and then yesterday over the course of the day, they were largely peaceful protests. This is the kind that again the state and city officials wanted to see and at this particular site, the police chief here in minneapolis, madeira ara done toe came out to stand in protest of floyds death and how it was handled and the aftermath. He spoke with sara sidner live on the air as she was relaying some of the questions the floyd family was directing asking. Take a listen. I want to know if hes going to get me justice for my brother and arrest all the officers. Reporter they want to knowother officers should be arrested in your mind and if you see that they should all four be convicted in this case. This is the floyd family . Reporter this is the floyd family. To the floyd family, being silent, or not intervening to me, youre complicit, so i dont see a level of distinction any different. Reporter as for what we can expect moving forward today, Minnesota Attorney general Keith Ellison is taking over the investigation from Hennepin County and from Benjamin Crump the floyd family lawyer we are expecting the results of an independent autopsy as well. Poppy . Jim . Omar jiminez, thanks very much. Remember this as youre listening this morning, it is a complicated picture, not monolithic, many Peaceful Protesters and many acts of violence, were trying to show that to you as best we can across the country. Boris sanchez is here in the Nations Capital. Boris, watching some of this last night similar started peaceful in many places, as night fell, it got violent in many parts of the city. Reporter absolutely, jim. There were fires raging all over the Nations Capital last night, but some of the most intense scenes, the most tense moments unfolded right here, just steps from President Trumps front door, in Lafayette Park at this intersection, protesters clashing with police. Theres a radius for blocks of ash and glass on the ground. You see this National Park Service Building right behind me, you may not see because of traffic and folks that may be in the way, but there were fire trucks out here this morning because flames were reignited. You see the vandalism outside of it as well and landmarks are being targeted, too. St. Johns church here, this is a historic landmark from the early 1800s, this house of worship has been visited by every american president since james madison. Last night protesters broke into the basement and set afire. Fortunately metro firefighters were able to put it out. Further down the street, the aflcio also set aflame. We saw tweets from President Trump this weekend saying he was safe and sound inside the white house, we learned actually that on friday night, the secret service took him, the first lady and their son, baron, into an underground bunker under the east wing of the white house, so it just goes to show outside of one of the most significant symbols of power in the world, this chaos is unfolding. Jim . Poppy . Boris, thank you for bringing us that. Yvonne mcmorris is with us and dia dianne gallagher, first in atlanta, incredibly disturbing video of two officers there with the Atlanta Police department using Excessive Force against two College Students. What can you tell us . Reporter thats right. I want to warn you, the video you are going to be seeing as im talking here is incredibly disturbing. It is painful to watch. These two officers who take these two College Students at historical black colleges here in atlanta out of their cars on saturday night and tase them. Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said clearly Excessive Force is used. The chief of police said it was shocking to see the way the students were man handled inside their cars there. The two officers who used the tasers have both been fired. The three officers you also see in the video, they have put on desk duty, pending the investigation. The charges against those students were dropped, that was on saturday night where more than 150 people in atlanta were arrested. On sunday night things were a little different and it may have dealt with the fact that Law Enforcements presence was so much greater. Governor brian kemp activated about 3,000 members of the National Guard statewide, here in downtown where i am now as well as protecting the governors mansion. 64 people arrested in atlanta last night, jim, poppy . Diane, thanks so much in atlanta. Lets go to new york now where the nypd says their officers arrested more than 250 people during protests overnight. At least seven Police Officers were injured in the clashes. Brynn gingras there. Brynn, give us a sense of how widespread this is and how well if thats true its been calmed down now . Reporter its somewhat calmed down now, jim. You have been saying it all morning, these protests started peacefully. As the commissioner said in an interview this morning, when it got dark, it got ugly taken got ugly quick. Were in soho, a highend shopping area of new york city. Could you see the stores behind me on main are boarding up again. These were boarded up last night and yet looters in the darkness broke through the wood, threw it on the ground and went into the stores and basically took all the merchandise that was inside. The same thing for chanel. Weve been showing you the pictures of the chanel and jewelry thrown all over the cobblestones here in soho. Theyre reboarding up their stores as well. I want to show you video from a privately owned Jewelry Store thats just a block away from there. The owner, manager rather allowed us to go inside. I mean, the place was ransacked. It wasnt a smashandgrab situation. The way these looters, it was almost organized. They broke into these businesses and even went into the back inventory areas of the businesses and took everything out as much as they could as fast as they could and that is repeated literally as almost every store in this area of this shopping district. As you said this wasnt just this area. It happened in manhattan and brooklyn, more than 250 arrests, officers injured with molotov cocktails, which is something we saw over the weekend and also a number of Department Vehicles torched during these looting sessions that happened overnight after the protest. Guys . Brynn, that is stunning to see and im sure you are kept up as a lot of us were overnight the constant refrain of helicopters overhead. West coast now, Stephanie Elam is in los angeles, under a state of emergency, the county there. What can you tell us in terms of people respecting or not respecting the curfew overnight . Reporter last night it seemed people here in this part of the town were paying attention mainly because they had to, because the National Guard was out here. We also can tell you that the police have been out here in strong force. There were a couple of buildings that were burned down in the protests saturday night. This is after friday night when we saw some 500 people arrested in protests from downtown, arrests made here. Lots of graffiti and so forth here along melrose, where we are. Fairfax a burned out car in front of a gas station, all of that percolating here and in santa monica we saw there were more tensions, more clashes between some protesters and the police there, and so we saw hundreds arrested last night there, but thats just looking at whats happening here. Where we see people start off really focused on the protesting and as it gets later in the day, sort of begins to change and that tone begins to change and thats when we saw looting happening over the weekend here, but if you move up the coast to portland, oregon, where they have seen days of protests as well, it definitely got thick up there yesterday. The Police Telling me there that they had to start going to using rubber bullets and tear gas to break up what was happening there. They said that protesters were breaking windows in the federal courthouse and trying to take over the Justice Center there so they had to work to do that. One thing i want to point out, too, is something weve seen happen across the country, different places, where weve seen Police Officers actually coming and kneeling with protesters, and that happened in portland. I checked in with the portland police. Two sergeants were out there talking to protesters, and they had a good conversation and just became an organic moment where these two sergeants kneeled, so weve seen that in other cities across the country as well, and this i would say is very different than any of these other cases that we have covered, jim and poppy, of this issue of black men and their relationship with police. This one feels different in the sense that were seeing some Police Officers actually respond and interact with these protesters about it and agree with them. Yes, a handful of other cities as well, Stephanie Elam in los angeles, thanks very much. We go to kentucky, there was another interaction there that helped lead to some of the protests, the killing of Breanna Taylor as the violence got worse over the weekend, someone was shot and killed after officers and the National Guard returned fire clearing a large crowd. Evan mcmorris santoro, state police are investigating the shooting. What do we know about the circumstances . Reporter well thats right. The governor saying this morning that he is authorizing state police to investigate this shooting. Now, here in louisiana in louisiana . Here in louisville, excuse me, the city is dealing with anguish over two policeinvolved deaths, obviously george floyd, across the entire country and Breanna Taylor an emt killed in march after a warrant was served on her house and her boyfriend shot at the police, the police shot back. Thats under investigation, too. Now, we got here last night after the loudest parts of the protests were over but you see a Massive Police presence, Law Enforcement everywhere, National Guard everywhere and around midnight, according to Law Enforcement, the police were trying to clear a parking lot here in downtown, according to what they said, they were fired upon, and fired back apparently, killing a black male, according to the reports. Now, the interesting thing is, this is supposed to be a day of reflection that was declared yesterday by the mayor here, who is trying to negotiate this very difficult political position, trying to make some changes to the police force, changes to policing and deal with the george floyd protest thats been so loud and today was supposed to be a day of reflection. The urban League President saying in a tweet its become a day of mourning. Back to you. Evan, a number of the signs i saw in the protest yesterday in new york also had her name on them, Breanna Taylor as well. People should read on that if youre not familiar with her killing. Evan, thank you for being there. We have a lot ahead. Police, local leaders putting to the test or put to the test as these protests for justice, and equality across the country continue. Well talk to some of those leaders. Two minnesota Business Owners watched helplessly as looters ransacked their business. Well speak to them and about their hopes for putting it all back together. Overnight across the country the peaceful protests of the killing of george floyd a number of them crossed again into violence, more arrests were made in both miami and denver. With us now, chief george calina, police chief of the miami Police Department and denver mayor michael hancock. Thanks to both of you. We know you have so much on your plate and appreciate you taking the time here. If i could begin with you police chief colina, a sad fact instead of having a National Conversation that looks to bridge the divide, you had an attempt and some of this is frankly coming from the president to focus on one group or one end of the political spectrum as being responsible for these protests here. I just wonder, based on what youre seeing on the ground in miami, what is driving this . Is it you have this contention now these are nationally organized by antifa, thats whats happening here. What are you seeing on the ground there in miami. Sxl we a were seeing a lot of protests across the country. A small amount of protesters are agitators wanting to create conflict, wanting to divide us further. By and large the protests are peaceful. You have a bad actor who takes an overt act and youll have other people that will join in but weve also had circumstances like we had yesterday where the protesters didnt allow these aggressive agitators to take action, and we literally saw other protesters stopping them and so thats been a very positive sign. Mayor, to you. The National Security adviser, Robert Obrien was asked by our jake tapper yesterday essentially if he thinks there is systemic racism within Police Departments across the country, if that is a problem. Here is his response. I dont think theres systemic racism. 99. 9 of our Law Enforcement officers are great americans. There are some bad apples and some bad cops that are racist. Is he right, mayor, or is there systemic racism that needs to be addressed and of course its not talking about every officer or the majority of officers, but its talking about whether there is at the core a systemic issue that has to be addressed . Yes, poppy, youre absolutely right. Theres systemic racism in america, and it certainly pervades our Police Departments. This is a systemic challenge that americas faced not in the last three or four weeks, but quite frankly over the last 300 or 400 years, and while weve made tremendous progress, we nowhere where we should be or want to be. Theres a lot of work that needs to be done to address the disease of racism in america including in our Police Department. Theres an inherent trust between africanamericans particularly africanamerican men and other people of color, and the Police Department, and it goes both ways. That is systemic. Its innate and its passed from generation to generation. To chief colina, do you agree, and how do you, and i dont mean to color the entire miami Police Department this way, but do you agree that there are bad elements, right, that you have to police and weed out in effect and if so, how do you respond to that . How do you do that well . How do you solve the problem . Well, i think you need to be vocal and i think you need to take the proper steps and not be afraid, but i think the mayor said something very interesting, which i think is spoton, which is he said that this is a problem thats across the country. The Police Department is a microcosm of the rest of the country, so we have people that are bigoted and that are racist in the country. Thats a fact. We have to accept that. The same thing in the Police Department. Theres something thats happened here thats been different than other tragedies that have occurred across the country. This is the first time in my 30 years, though, that i have seen so many Law Enforcement executives and even some unions come out and call this for what it was, a murder. Ive not seen that, and that importa is an important step. It is for sure. It sean we heard the republican governor of maryland, larry hogan, say just yesterday this was a murder in a police uniform, and to hear that as well, is notable. I do wonder, chief, there has been a lot written over the weekend about defunding being a reaction not just talking about changes that need to be made but defunding some of these organizations in terms of Police Departments and places where th thisis this consistent problem and the issue of the broad immunity given to Police Officers by the supreme court. Well, the problem goes a bit further. One thing is to charge an officer and a lot of times you hear many of the protesters here charge the officers, charge the officers. Its really about convicting the officers. There is no justice if you charge someone and ultimately youre not able to beggain a conviction. Those juries we have the same issue there. Thats also a microcosm. You have to pull the vail back of everyone is doing the right thing. No, someone didnt do what theyre supposed to do, they need to be held accountable. That needs to happen more and more and more and slowly we can start dealing all together once we see progress being made. I think defunding what ultimately will happen is now you are hiring people that have no business being in the Police Department, that are perhaps even more problematic, because you dont have the right equipment, you dont have the right technology and youre not going to attract the right candidate that we need that have Public Service in their hearts. Mayor hancock, there is according to cnns reporting a debate now within the white house as to whether the president should deliver a National Address, some sort of message of unity and calm. I wonder, in your view, would the president s voice in the midst of this help to heal some of these wounds . You know, jim, we always hope that our president will stand up, speak, and signal a voice of unity, a voice of courage, really work to calm the fears of the pains in our communities across the nation, when these sort of things have happened. You know, you must also as a president have a credibility and the integrity to engage a community and a voice that people will follow and while we hope President Trump will do that, i think the governors and mayors right now are the ones who have to step up, and we are, and to respond collectively and individually in our cities to remind people that we recognize the pain and the challenge and certainly the frustration that resulted from George Floyds murder, but also all the other questionable homicides that the the hands of Police Officers, to the chiefs point, Police Officers have also stood up and said this was not right. Ive seen them all over social media. This is the type of thing that i think will ultimately bring this, our communities together but also, we must back it up with action. It cant just be words that are emanating from the white house or from our city halls. We must also be backed up with action, change in policy, change in training, and an acknowledgment to the chiefs point being very vulnerable and raw and simply saying we recognize it exists. We must deal with it. Mayor hancock, thank you. Well said, thank you and chief colina to you, thank you very much. With all of this playing out, i think we are all grappling with how on earth do we talk to our children about what is going on, and will anything be different this time . Well talk about that next. Lets be honest. Quitting smoking is hard. Like, quitting every monday hard. Quitting feels so big. C. , have now deployed elements of the National Guard. In philadelphia, more than 600 National Guardsmen now out in force after a weekend of protests, of looting, some arson. Cnns brian todd joins us from philadelphia. Brian, what are you seeing there . Because we have seen in some cities as the police and National Guard presence has become more pronounced in greater numbers that theyve been able to keep a better handle at least on some of the more violent participants in this. Reporter well, jim, theyre struggling to keep a handle on that in philadelphia i can tell you because this is part what have were still going through, this scene we came upon a few minutes ago, this is a twoalarm fire at the corner of broad street and chew avenue in northern philadelphia. Firefighters scrambling to prevent this from spreading to buildings attached to it. We spoke to the fire commissioner adam teal. No injuries or deaths in this that theyve been able to see so far. Theyre battling this fire, a twoalarm fire, they have 100 firefighters on the scene. Extraordinary numbers that the fire commissioner has told us about the fires in this city just over the past 48 hours. He said there are about 300 fires in the city, about 260 of them are structure fires, so a lot of looting still going on, a lot of fires here. Police, National Guard, and state police trying to get their arms around this, its flaring up in pockets, jim, and theyre really struggling right now, just you know, again a little less than two days after the initial violence started. We wish them the best of luck. Brian todd in philadelphia, thanks very much. So how do we explain all of this to our children . Can we really even explain it and will anything be different this time . Lets talk about this with cnn political commentator former South Carolina state representative bakari sellers, author of mustread new book my vanishing country and west moore, ceo of robinhood, one of the largest antipoverty forces in the country and author of the other wes moore, we nom nol rea phenomenal read. I share in calls for peace but where is our collect of it pain supposed to go in the absence of justice . Can you talk about that from your perch, trying to work on the fundamental issues here, but also as a dad . I think one of the biggest fundamental issues is one of the big fundamental issues that has plagued this country from the start of this country, thats the issue of race. Its an inability for us to be able to not just have a real conversation around it, but understand that a process of truth and trauma and reconciliation has to be a part of this process. When you think about the times the National Guard has been called out, the president has activated the National Guard in this country 12 times in this countrys history, ten of them had to do with race. The only two that did not have to do with race was the postal worker strike in new york city and the looting that took place after Hurricane Irma in st. Croix. Thats it. Every other time its had to do with race, and i think what people are seeing right now, its a larger frustration on this idea that black america just wants america to love it, the same way that black america has loved america, since its inception. Black americans have been responsible for, have been just as responsible as anybody else for the building of this nation, for its economic prowess, for its cultural prowess, for its ability to grow as a country, for its leaders, for the contributions we have made, and i think what were dealing with right now, and how i can think about it as a father is, i want my child to understand her greatness, her brilliance, her joy, her contribution, her place, but i also want to make sure that im not the only one stressing it. I want our country to remind her how important she is. I think theres an obligation for our country to do that, and one we have failed at in many ways. Bakari, you write about this so eloquently in your book and for people who havent read it, your father was arrested and shot protesting for civil rights in 1968. My fathers path and my own are woven together over the same bloody ground. You said i just want my children to live in a write where they are truly free. Yes, and i think that wes and i, we share, i could just say ditto to what he said. You know, for me, i want sadie, stokley and kai to believe they can one day sit on cnn and be host, that they can be a United States senator, that they can be president of the United States, that they can be free, but every night, my daughter actually turns 15 today, shes able to get her permit, but i have to have a conversation with her about how she should interact with police. I have to have a conversation with her about how she should interact with other white folk who may come up to her just because of the color of her skin view her as being a threat, and so we live in a country where this level of apprehension is extremely tough, and we live in a country thats, poppy, ill tell you this, one of the greatest flaws of this country is were absent empathy. I always tell people and to my white friends i say, can you put yourself in the shoes of a black man or woman in this country . Can you imagine if youre a white woman, can you imagine being a black woman having to send your child out and worrying about whether or not they could come home to you safely . Until we can have that empathy, and you know, me and wes, were going to struggle. Were going to have these conversations until our children leave our homes and become parents themselves. Were going to struggle with what should we tell them but to white parents, what are you teaching your children . What are you teaching your children about humanity, about empathy, about compassion, about seeing black people as being equal and great in their own skin. Thats the question we have to ask. Wes, we heard that powerful message from our colleague and friend van jones on this Network Friday talking directly what he deemed to be the White Hillary Clinton voter, talking about e. B. Coop ear enthe incident in central park, made me back to dr. Martin luther kings letter in 1963 talking about the white moderate in this country. I wonder what your thoughts are on those conversations that white parents need to be having with their kids. I think its both the conversations that they need to be having with their kids and also the example that theyre setting for their children. Its understanding the fact that they are watching you in the same way that bakari and my kids are watching us, and its not just about, you know, where i think oftentimes, and ive had the flurry of people who have reached out to me this weekend, and asking me what can i do, what can i do . And my honest answer is, i think you know the answer. Its just demand the same type of treatment and understanding that you would demand for your own children. You would stop at nothing to defend your children, stop at nothing to make sure your children have every single opportunity open to them. Would you stop at nothing at breaking down any type of systemic barrier that stands in the way between your child and their godgiven destiny, and what were seeing and im asking all myself friends to take on, i want you to have the same aggression for my child. We know these things are real. We know the history of systemic racism, the history of everything from housing discrimination and the history of transportation discrimination, we know all these things are real. We know that people are not policed in one neighborhood and policed in the same neighborhood and the neighborhoods i grew up in, that these are neighborhoods overpoliced and underresourced and we know it. The question became how are people going to stand around and tolerate that. How are people going to tolerate that level of inequity . To my friends, im asking you, take the same aggression for my child as you would have your own. What can we all tell our children one day we did in this moment . Bakari, thank you. Wes, thank you. We have seen these images of looting and vandalism across the country. That is some of the protesting. Jim, as you have been right to point out throughout the morning a lot of it has also been people. For some small Business Owners watching their live lie hoods and dreams be destroyed. That is exactly what has happened, to elias uso and his wife mawirdi hamid. Wednesday night, looters smashed windows, set fires, even stole medications yet they do plan to rebuild. Elias and mawirdi join us now. Thanks to both of you. Weve been watching this to happen to so many small businesspeople throughout the country. Our heart goes out to you, you put your life, effort and your money into this. I wonder as this happens, what do you want to see on the streets of minneapolis to allow you to reopen . Well, we were expecting at least this to kind of go down a little bit, before we say anything, our thoughts and prayers goes out to the George Floyds family, and we feel their pain, because the reason being is we are a couple blocks from where george floyd was killed and our pharmacy is probably five minutes away from where we live, so this is, hits hard. Its just sad to hear that, and to see this kind of destruction happen, but it will not bring george floyd back again. We can rebuild our pharmacy. We can build business, but it wont bring his life back, and we are very saddened for this to happen. Of course you are. I was struck, over the weekend, by something that the governor said about really the tale of two cities that exists in minnesota. Listen to this. We dont just rank near the top on educational attainment, we rank near the top on personal incomes, on home ownership, on life expectancies, all of those statistics are true if youre white. If youre not, we rank near the bottom, and what this week is showing all of us is those two things cant operate at the same place. You cannot continue to say youre a great place to live if your neighbor because of the color of their skin doesnt have that same opportunity. Mawirdi, do you think hes right, as a black person, living in the state we both call home, and what do they need to do about it . Yes, and as you can see here in minneapolis, and minnesota, its a great state. We feel it, thats why we are here. We choose to live in minnesota rather than anywhere else in the u. S. It provides a great opportunity for a businessperson like my husband to drive and for immigrant communities to come here and raise their family, but even looking at the neighborhood that we live in right now, powder horn, its historically been a black neighborhood but it is one of the neighborhoods that is getting gentrified and we see communities every day getting displaced because they cant afford their rent or their mortgage so the injustice is happening and we wish that and hope and pray that there is going to be some solution to our suffering. Elias, what is that solution . What do you need . Listen, the riots, they will end at some point, the police will get control at some point. What do you need to see, we hope, what do you need to see to give you confidence that this wont happen again . Well, think about it. If my pharmacy, something happened to it while working as a pharmacist and helping my patient, the first thing i do is the police, i call 911, i need member. So, but for the business to reopen now for how we can open, we are hoping that we can give the service back to my patients and all other pharmacies got looted and robbed. So now the biggest, biggest concern that i have is my patients not getting their medication. They may have some left over right now. The problem will come very soon. They may not have, they may not have their insulin, and i hope the board will be very lenient to help us relocate and ease the rules a little bit so we can reopen somewhere temporarily until we get this one fixed and reopened. Thank you both so much for being here, and we are wishing you luck in rebuilding the business that you built there in minnesota. Lets hope, lets hope. Thank you. Well be right back. Thank you. Well, the president has been tweeting a lot about these protests. No National Address yet, but cnn has learned that the white house is reaching out to a black listening session. Is that going to happen and are those potential listening sessions wanted by these communities . Maybe it will happen. The president has been using tough talk on twitter. Hes got an appointment with his attorney general and Law Enforcement officials, and you can expect more of that today. For the listening session, its a little tenuous so far, and i dont think people should get their hopes up for many reasons. Trump was sued for Racial Discrimination in his real estate business. Remember he called publicly for the execution of the central park 5. They were later exonerated when barack obama became the first black president. He used the socalled birthing theory to suggest that the president wasnt a real american, and of course the demonization of immigrants as president. But its not just donald trump, its his party. Remember the domination in the Republican Party was a Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, National Democrats embraced it, National Republicans did not and you had millions and millions of conservative whites move into the Republican Party. Consider this pugh Center Research poll that came out last year. 59 of republicans said that they thought the legacy of slavery had little or nothing to do with the plight of blacks today. 70 said they thought the biggest problem with race discrimination was seeing it where it did not exist. 84 said america has either done enough or too much to bring equal rights to blacks. When you hear those numbers, not surprising that the president s National Security adviser says he doesnt see systemic racism or the president takes the tone hes taken so far. He always indicators in a pinch to his Political Base and thats where his Political Base is, guys. John harwood at the white house, thanks very much. Still ahead, more than half of the states have now activated the National Guard. This as dozens of cities across the country have also imposed curfews after some protests, we should note.
