Flattening as moving to other parts of the country. All this adding to fears that reopening will actually backfire, not just in terms of the outbreak but also in terms of economic damage. And were learning more about when the very first wave of this outbreak may have started, a new study finding that its been mutating and circulating only since late last year. For more on what the study means, dr. Sanjay gupta joins us now. Now, this is one study. I know, sanjay, whenever we talk about this, i say were learning so much about this, really every day. But the key finding here seems to be that this would be only about 10 of the population so far has been exposed. What does that mean Going Forward . Well, you know, its hard to really pinpoint these numbers in terms of exposures. In part because you need to have more robust testing to really know that, but i think the larger point is that its still a smaller number than what people would think they would need for whats called herd immunity. Two things. Once youre exposed to the virus, become infected, you should develop antibodies and they should offer some left of protection for a period of time. We still dont know how long that protection is or how strong that protection is. Thats a big, big thing investigators need to figure out. But then, after a certain percentage of the population closer to 60 or 70 become, you know, have these antibodies, you can start to develop herd protection, especially around people who are vulnerable, for example, in whom an infection can be a much more significant problem. So i think what this study showed among other things is were not really anywhere close to that herd immunity. Thats a good thing. That would mean a lot more people possibly getting infected. But you know, we shouldnt count on that as a form of protection Going Forward. We still have to keep the stayathome orders to best protect us. Sanjay keep that away for the vaccine, sorry, poppy. My question is on the vaccine. Were talking to a doctor in the last hour who pointed out we still dont really know what kind of vaccine this is going to have to be to be most effective. Will it be like the flu vaccine we have to get every year or Something Like a polio, mmr vaccine. When will we know that, and is there a difference in how effective one or the other is . Well, this is really interesting, and i should point out that some of what were seeing right now in medicine and in developing these vaccine trials have never been done before. Were seeing a chapter in medical history being written right now. Theres a few different vaccine types. Theres the type where you actually take a portion of the virus. You give it to somebody, and their body makes antibodies to it. You can take an inactivated portion of the virus and the same sort of thing. These mrna vaccines which a lot of people have heard about now, are basically taking a blueprint of the part of the virus and giving it to the body and letting the body essentially being its own antibody, its own vaccine victory. Heres an important point, though, even if antibodies in general dont seem to offer as long or as strong of protection, the whole point of a vaccine trial is you pick the antibodies that will offer the longest and strongest protection. Just because antibodies may not offer as much protection doesnt mean that the vaccine necessarily wont in the long run. Thats what the trials are for. So much to discover. Sanjay, stand by. First, an update from chicago. Omar jimenez there. A big question, of course, has been whether the number on the righthand side of the screen, as staggering as it is, actually understates the number of death in the country. You said officials where you are plan to review deaths as far back as november. Why, and what are they expecting they might find . Yeah, thanks. For starters, jim, i should say, theyre going to be looking at cases as far back as november. They only expected it to be a handful of cases at this point. They said they could very well go through this entire process and find that the first confirmed case was exactly when they thought it would be, but the implications of that not being the case would change the entire way this virus has been studied so far. Now, specifically, as we mentioned, they were looking at cases as far back as november. They would be looking at deaths where we have seen viral pneumonia involved and also heart attacks that were not brought on as a result of heart failure. Lets say they find a case that was coronavirus positive from back in november. That would actually prompt them to look even further back. And of course, the entire purpose of this is to find if this was spreading in the u. S. Before we knew it was. To give you a brief timeline. The first confirmed case we saw in the chicagoland area was back on january 24th. It was the second confirmed in the entire country at the time. Since then, we have seen cases grow by tens of thousands and deaths right around 2,000 here in the chicagoland area. Poppy. Omar, thanks for that reporting. So, a Biotech Company says it might have a treatment for covid19 available by the end of the summer. It is based on a concept more than 100 years old, but its implemented through new cutting edge techtechnology. Elizabeth cohen explains. The key to making a brandnew drug for covid19 could be in this vial of blood. It comes from this man who has recovered from coronavirus. Now, doctors at the Rockefeller University in new york city are searching his blood for just the right antibodies. You really want something very potent. Potent means can neutralize, kill the virus. Its a twist on the use of convalescent plasma where someone who has recovered from covid gives blood directly to someone who is sick. That can work, but its old technology. The doctor won a nobel prize for his research on convalescent plasma in 1901. The new approach uses antibodies and its cutting edge. Heres how it works. When someone is sick with covid, antibodies inside their blood fight off the virus. After the person recovers, they donate blood. Scientists select the most powerful antibodies and clone them and turn it into a drug. Its one of the hottest areas in covid research. Companies in new york and san francisco, Vanderbilt University in nashville, tennessee, even the department of defense and many more are involved in Monoclonal Antibody research. We caught the team at vanderbilt as they picked their favorite antibodies. These are all distinct. The treatment could possibly prevent infenvection or treat te already sick. Vanderbilts lead researcher specializes in vaccines, but he said this research will be faster. I think antibodies will be finished first, and will be the bridge toward longer immunity, which will be conferred by vaccines. So fast that the Pharmaceutical Company rejgenern said they might be able to have their drug on the market by the end of summer. Their technology is already used to treat cancer, arthritis, and asthma. We can clone out the best of antibodies from recovered humans. We selected the best ones to create an antibody cocktail, as we call it. With so much work on this i think the more groups we have working on it, all the better. And the more shots on goal we have for getting an effective prevention or treatment. The hope is high for this old therapy turned new. Now, a question you always want to ask about a new drug is, is it safe . The answer here is that there is hope that it will be particularly safe because it originated in humans. This originated in antibodies from human beings so hoping there wont be serious side effects. Poppy, jim. Thats fascinating, elizabeth. Thank you for that reporting. Joining us now is dr. Matthew, cnn medical analyst and Public Health specialist and dr. Gupta back with us as well. Listen, so much is coming across the transom pretty much every day on this, but sanjay, we had a doctor on last hour who served in the bush administration. He mentioned something that i hadnt heard before. That is the possibility that the strain of this virus that new york has faced may be more virulent than the strain that california has, as an example of how these mutations matter and may make a difference here. Is there is that a possibility that you see evidence of . Well, there have been these sort of pipelines of Genetic Research that have been done now looking at this virus and how its changed as its gone through some 3 million people. You know, as this virus moves, it infects more people, there are small mutations that happen. The questions are, are these big enough mutations that the virus is fundamentally different or not. That doesnt appear to be the case. With the flu shot, for example, you get a different one every year because theres enough drift in the overall virus that you need a new flu shot. Its not clear that thats the case here with coronavirus yet. What is interesting, i think, is that there does appear to be two different strains overall. The one that was predominantly circulating in europe was different than the one that was earlier circulating in china. The one that was predominantly in europe was different in the sense it was more contagious, but it didnt seem to be more deadly or virulent in the sense that more people werent hospitalized or becoming critically ill because of it. It was more contagious so its no surprise that has become more of the dominant strain in the world. So i think thats the one that the vaccine researchers are really going to focus on. It appears to be relatively stable. But obviously, theyre going to keep an eye on that so they make a vaccine for the right virus and the right proteins on that virus. Dr. Matthew, so this new analysis, im sure you have seen from researchers in britain, that says that they believe that coronavirus is circulating, as we reported, for a long time before this, months before identified, meaning that only 10 of the global population has been exposed to the virus. If you do the math and look at 10 , and then over 70,000 deaths in the United States, what does that portend . Does it mean without an effective treatment, without a vaccine, for every 10 exposed well see that many more deaths . Poppy, thats a good question. You know, if you think about it now with the number of deaths in the u. S. And how many people have died all over the world, were only saying 10 to 20 of the population have been exposed and theres been already this much damage. Dr. Gupty just talked about herd immunity, for an infectious virus like covid19, you want that herd immunity up in the 90 , 95 range, so as states start opening back up again, and we know that the numbers are not going down, its the exact opposite, especially in states like georgia and many other states, it is a grim statistic to realize that as people go out there with only so few people exposed, when you look at the world numbers, that there are going to be more deaths and more cases to come. Goodness. Sanjay, this graphic, New York Times put it out following the data here. Just showing the difference in the rate of increase in infections. We put it up on the screen, but new york versus the rest of the country. And what it shows actually, theres a different one we had up earlier i think well put on the screen, but what it shows there it is Slower Growth in new york, declining rate of infection there. Rest of the country, its going up. Is this really migrating, the outbreak . As opposed to flattening . I think theres different waves of this virus. I mean, that was anticipated. We saw that it wasnt sort of going to affect the entire country all at the same time. The coasts were more likely to be infected or people were more likely to be infected in those areas first. Obviously, in places where you have a higher density population, and places that have Big International airports. Because i think a lot of migration of the virus into the United States at various times. But this is not surprising. And you know, overall, if you take new york out of the picture and just say how is the United States doing overall with regard to the coronavirus, the numbers are still going up. And thats, you know, obviously, nobody wants that to happen. We want to see it not only plateau but start to see the back end of the curve. Its not clear as a country, not even that its not clear. We can say as a country we are not were nowhere near the back end of that curve, and most of the places were still sort of on the upwoard trajectory. Wow, wow. And that migrating point is a good one. So much focus has been spent on this city, new york city, and new york state, and look at the rest of the country now. Thank you both, dr. Matthew, dr. Gupta. Coronavirus, what to do, what to avoid, when to see a doctor . Sanjays podcast has all of the answers. You can join him for coronavirus fact versus fiction, every weekday, theres a new episode. More states loosening restrictions today. Many are not meeting the most important criteria laid out by the trump administration, which is a 14day decline in the cases. Some are seeing an increase, but theyre opening anyway. Happening now, a key hearing on capitol hill, but dr. Anthony fauci who was supposed to be facing lawmakers, the white house prevented him from appearing. May sound familiar to you. Well keep a close eye on this Going Forward. This as new data shows that there are new emerging hot spots forming across the country. Thats right. Ed lavendera is with us from dallas. No sugar coating it. Local leaders are taking a major gamble. Reopening like this, seeing these numbers. Absolutely. It will take several weeks to fully grasp just what the effects of this reopening will be. But it is interesting to see this graphic put out by axios this morning. If you take a look at this graphic, they essentially average the number of new cases in all of the states across the country over a sevenday period, over the course of the last week. What it found was the most worrisome places where you see trends in the country, minnesota, nebraska, and puerto rico. And you see the most positive trends in arkansas and wyoming. There are about 12 other states that are moving in the right direction, but poppy and jim, about a third of the country, the states where you see the number of new cases continuing to grow, and that includes texas and virginia, and texas has been a particular focus because the governor here announcing new openings here this week starting on friday. Hair salons, barber shops, nail salons can open this friday. Moved up from what the governor had originally said would probably be a midmay starting point. But there are another round of businesses that will be able to open up midmay. The governor here insists here has a great plan in place that has been signed off by dr. Birx of the White House Coronavirus task force, and because of that, theyre looking at not just the data of new cases but other data as well in terms of positive infection rates and thats one of the things theyre leaning on to make these decisions. But a great deal of skepticism coming with all of this as well. Poppy and jim. Dan simon is in san francisco. So dan, california, it was ahead of the game on a lot of these social distancing stayathome orders, now its going to relax this for some stores on friday. Tell us what youre hearing. Thats right, jim. On friday, well begin to see a partial reopening for the Retail Sector in california. And this is not going to be the full shopping experience, by any means. This is Curbside Pickup only. But it does mark an important milestone, and it does allow some employees to get back to work in some of the Small Businesses to begin generating revenue once again. We have seen some counties, jim, in northern california, operate in a more aggressive fashion. Ub yuba and Center Counties have already opened up restaurants and hair salons. It did get a tongue lashing from Governor Newsom yesterday. When those counties went above his order. But he doesnt seem to be taking any action. We should also point out that los angeles and san francisco, of course, the two biggest cities in california, they will not be opening up their Retail Stores on friday. Theyre going to take things a bit more slowly. The mayors for those communities, mayor garcetti, london breed, say theyre not quite ready. Theyre going to do things at their own pace. Jim and poppy. All right, dan. Thanks for that reporting. Ahead for us, pharmaceutical giant roesch is now touting an Antibody Test which it says is far more accurate than a lot of other ones out there. More about this virus and its origins and new genetic analysis out of london shows the virus is believed to have been circulating around the world since late last year, so months earlier. Antibody testing, of course, a crucial component to better understand just how far and how fast the virus has spread because if you have the antibodies, it means you have been exposed. This week, the fda approved emergency use authorization for roches new Antibody Test which the company says is more accurate. Lets speak to dr. Allen wright, chief medical officer for roche diagnostics. Tell us how much more accurate is this test, and is it therefore a reliable measure, because this has been an open question, but a reliable measure of just how many people have been exposed . Well, good morning. And just call me allen. Yes, this test is more reliable than previous tests. I think what had happened in the urgency of the weeks and months before is that in order to get testing into the market rapidly, every test was brought into the market. But as we have learned more about the virus and in fact as weve had time, as roche has had time to develop their test, we have had the time to develop a very sensitive, very specific, highquality test for testing for antibodies. One of the things i want to point out is that we have compressed what usually takes us three to five years in development and compressed that down to three months. I couldnt be prouder to be part of the two teams that brought the pcr test and the Antibody Test to market. Alan, one thing i thought was so interesting reading a little bit about what youre doing is the way this withdraws blood, its not a finger prick. Its through a vein. So i wonder if you could explain, is that part of what makes it arguably so much more reliable than the others out there . Actually, this is a veinous blood draw, it comes in the tubes like any test we get in the doctors office, many of us are familiar with that, and it runs on an analyzer. Its a completely different test than the molecular test. If you recallering th, that run nasal swab. Those two testing instruments are completely separate. Different consumables or ingredients that go into the tests. Different machines, completely separate. So there have been a lot of competing claims throughout this about how widely available a whole host of tests are for folks watching at home, who want to know if they have been exposed, and from place to place, its so different, you know, whats available, how often, how easily. How soon will a test like this be available to most people or many people around the country . Well, for roche, this is a global effort. And our test will be available throughout the world, including the United States, in the next two weeks. And by the end of the month, well have manufacturing capability for the ingredients of the test that will be in the high double digit millions. So people i would like to get an Antibody Test. A lot of people would like to get them. Im wondering about the cost per test, and correct me if im wrong, but this isnt something people can buy and do at home. This is something they have to get done by a medical professional, and on top of it, what about for the uninsured . So yes. This test is a prescription test in the United States. So its under the direction of a practicing health care provider. A roche manufactures the instrument, the ingredients, the recipe for makes the recipe for the test, and then finally, we create the evidence that supports the analytical use and the clinical use. When you refer to the cost of the test, were just one component of what goes into getting that test out into the health care community. We dont actually do the test. And its roches commitment that our portion of that cost will not be a barrier to access to our testing. Dr. Alan wright of roche, well look for those developments. Thanks very much. Thank you. Uk Prime Minister Boris Johnson facing questions from parliament from the First Time Since he has recovered from covid19. What can you tell us . Thats right, poppy. It was the first time we saw him facing some really tough questions from the Opposition Leader in,s of parliament behind me. Being pressed on the issue of why the uk has such a high casualty rate, nearly 30,000 people killed. That more than any other country in europe. The Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, trying to evade the question, saying he doesnt think its the time now for comparisons. One thing he did concede is that the uk has not done a good job of trying to manage or contain the epidemic in care homes or nursing homes. That has been where some of the worst death tolls have come out of. He said that was something he deeply regretted. We do expect to hear from him again on sunday. Hes going to outline to the country what the lifting of restrictions might start to look like. That will begin on monday, but no one should be getting their hopes up yet. Its supposed to be very incremental. Very much a phased and cautious operation. Poppy, jim. A balancing act. Countries around the world are trying to strike. Fred pleitgen is in berlin. Angela merkel laying out the countrys next moves on reopening. How quickly, how conservatively are they doing it . Well, Angela Merkel is always quite conservative in her reopening, but she did say today germany is past the first phase of the pandemic and that they are pushing the pandemic back. Therefore, they can start reopening certain areas of the economy. Shes been under some pressure to do that. Lets go to our senior International Correspondent, matthew chance. Matthew, i mean, you spend so much time in moscow reporting on russia. Russian police are now investigating the recent deaths of three Health Care Workers who apparently fell out of hospital windows . And obviously, my experience tells me when you hear Something Like that, you have to ask the question, is something sinister going on . Because russia has a track record, as we all know, of silencing its opponents, silences journalists, human rights activists, opponents who criticize the authorities. And indeed, these three doctors as far as we understand, have all been critical of the Coronavirus Response in the country. They all had very similar deaths. They were scattered in various parts of the country. But from the Doctors Union i have spoken to inside of moscow, inside of russia, what this is about isnt about somebody going around targeting russian doctors who have spoken kind of against the response of the authorities. Its more about the sheer stress that the russian medical staff are under right now. Thousands upon thousands of new patients flooding the hospitals every day. Its just placing the doctors under so much strain, poppy. Matthew, thank you for that update. We appreciate all of your reporting. Unarmed black man in georgia is going to go to a grand jury after months of outrage and more recently protests. More thaen weeks since 25yearold Ahmaud Arbery went out for a jog and was chased down by a former Police Officer and his son, according to authorities, a video of what happened next has now emerged. Now, we want to warn you, the video is graphic. Martin savidge joins us now with the details. Tell us what you know. Morning, jim, morning poppy. I would stress its disturbing. If you dont want to watch it, now is the time to turn away. This video, we do not know who shot the video, and cnn has not been able to verify its authenticity, however, i will say that Law Enforcement had admitted there was a video of the incident. And the events depicted in the video seem to match closely with the Police Account of events that occurred that day. With that, here the video. The video begins with a man in a white tshirt jogging down the street toward a pickup blocking the road. Theres a man in the bed of the truck and another standing beside the drivers door holding a shotgun. As the runner approaches, he goes around the pickup on the right, and just as he passes the front of the vehicle, veers left. And a struggle begins with the man holding the shotgun. A shot goes off and the two disappear off screen. As the struggle continues, a second shot is heard. Then a third. The man in the white tshirt, who has been shot, recoils. And blood appears below his left rib cage. He takes steps as if to begin running again and then collapses. The man with the shotgun runs away as the other man runs toward him with a gun in his hand. Ahmaud arbery died on the street that day. It was the middle of the day. We should point out the men with the guns are father and son. One is former Law Enforcement. They told authorities there had been criminal activity in the neighborhood and they believed that arbery matched the description of the person they thought was responsible. They simply said they wanted to talk to him. But it turned into more than that. My goodness. Martin, the response obviously in the community has been one of shock and outrage and i would imagine even more so now seeing the video. What are the Community Leaders saying . You know, whats been frustrating for a lot of people here is not just the passage of time, of which there has been, but also the fact that they believe the pandemic overshadowed in many cases what would have been a story that got national notoriety. On top of that, people wanted to get out and protest and demonstrate, but they could not because there was, of course, the stayathome order in the state of georgia, and still there are restrictions on crowds to gather. Nonetheless, protests have begun. People have finally said, look, im getting out there, pandemic be damned. Here is some of kind of a conversation, confrontation, you could say, between Law Enforcement and some of the protesters in the neighborhood last night. Am i upset that it has taken this long for a verdict or justice to come . As the sheriff, im upset. It shouldnt have taken that long. If that was my son, i would be upset. I can only imagine what the mother and dad is going through. I can only imagine. And yall cant imagine what theyre going through. And that is the frustration, the time that has passed. It seemed like no activity. Now we hear the district attorney, the third one on this case, says he will take it to a grand jury, but the truth is, there are no grand juries being seated right now and no one is sure when they will be. Again, due to the pandemic. Possibly the middle of june, but many think thats optimistic. Jim and poppy. Lord help us. That video just jarring. Martin savidge, thanks very much for covering. Hes one of more of 30 million americans who filed for unemployment and one of nearly 150,000 Asian Americans who filed in new york state in the past four weeks. Its a staggering 69 increase from one year ago, the largest moonk any one racial group in the state. This particular virus affects severely our frontline workers, basically the retail and restaurant workers and the Service Industry. So when this thing hit, we were the first one to go down. Tang closed the tea parlor before the states stayathome order was announced midmarch and told his employees to file for unemployment, a move hesays goes against a proud Asian American culture. It takes really a pandemic for the Chinese People to really go seek out additional help. Racial discrimination against Asian Americans has also forced some workers to make a tough choice. Staying at home to avoid potential racism or fear confrontation going to work. There was that brief reference, you know, about the chinese virus or the wuhan virus, that term. They have since corrected that. The damage has been done. Meanwhile, wilson tang is preparing for an uncertain future. Im going to continue to be a voice for my community. And a voice for my staff. Im going to do my best to keep them safe. That dramatic increase in unemployment amongst Asian Americans here in new york may not even tell the full story, and thats because there are some 250,000 undocumented asian immigrants here in new york, many of them working in the Service Industry. And they are not eligible to file for unemployment, and that means theyre not counted, so that Unemployment Rate amongst asians here in new york could be much, much higher because of that. Cnn, new york. Well, happening right now on capitol hill, the former cdc chief, tom friedman, is testifying on the coronavirus. Of course, the administration blocked tony fauci, who has been leading much of the response to this from testifying there. Saying that democrats in effect have it in for the administration. Manu raju joins us on the phone with more. Certainly its important to hear from dr. Friedan, but i think the context that jim set up is important, that dr. Fauci was blocked from answering these questions today. Yeah, no question about it. I mean, anthony fauci, the republicans and democrats wanted fauci to testify. In fact, tom cole, the republican on the subcommittee, the ranking republican, raised concerns himself. He said he made the case for fauci to come and testify as well. It wasnt just democrats who wanted him to come and testify. But of course, the white house has intervened and said that he would not, and he would instead go before the Senate Committee next week as the president s criticized house democrats. But friedan, tom frieden, the former cdc director in this subcommittee hearing, did raise some serious concerns with with whats happening in new york city in particular. He said its really bad. He said, quote. Even now with the deaths decreasing substantially, theres twice as many deaths from covid in new york as in a usual day and he expected that is just the beginning there and elsewhere. Hes also laying out Major Concerns amid this push to reopen the economy. So this hearing is still ongoing, but clearly, he is voicing concerns, as others are, amid this effort by the president and others to get back to normal. That they are voicing serious caution in moving too rapidly. Manu raju, thanks for that reporting. Appreciate it. Thank you all for being with us today. Well see you back here tomorrow morning. Im poppy harlow. Im jim sciutto. Newsroom with kate bolduan starts right now. Hello, everyone. Im kate bolduan. Thank you so much for joining us this hour. At this point, everyone is wishing the pandemic was over and passed, of course, including the president , as hes making Crystal Clear in a new interview, but the facts on the ground are also Crystal Clear. Its not over. More than 71,000 americans have been killed. 1. 2 million americans infected. And with that in mind, now look at it this way. If you eliminate the new York Metro Area from the total count of new cases, you can see right there, infections are still climbing in the rest of the nation
