There. Joining us coordinators jessica dean and ryan nobles. Lets begin with you voters focusing on mayor Pete Buttigieg and joe biden ahead of a big day. No doubt about, that poppy. Particularly the interesting part of the turn in Bernie Sanders turn in manchester and New Hampshire in general has been that focus on Pete Buttigieg. For the most part sanders i dont want to say ignored but really didnt pay that much attention to buttigieg at least publicly but the results in iowa certainly changed that. Its pretty clear from all the polling were seeing leading up to tomorrow night that buttigieg is sanders close competitor and has a realistic shot at winning here. Sanders also has found a very specific way to distinguish himself from the former Mayors Campaign and that is their donor base. Sanders has repeatedly gone after the fact that buttigieg has a lot of wealthy donors to his campaign and that Sanders Campaign has virtually no wealthy donors. Its all done by a grassroots online army of donors. Sanders believes thats something democratic primarily voters in particular are very concerned about. They are concerned about the way campaigns are financed and the influence it has on politics. Hes hit on that over and over again for the past 36 hours or so. Buttigiegs response has been clear. He said hes not going to be influenced by donors and doesnt want to go into a campaign with donald trump with one hand tied behind his back. Poppy and jim, its going to be for voters in New Hampshire to decide which path they feel is a more preferable one for nominee. Up to the voters. Tell us what they are saying about the iowa caucus count which seems to solidify a small but solidify a buttigieg victory there. Jim, they are not going to be satisfied with the results is essentially what the campaign is telling us. They certainly want to move on. Dont really believe the iowa result is going to have much of an impact on New Hampshire at this point but they do want to make sure that the final count is accurate and complete and sanders is able to capture every delegate available to him. This is what his Campaign Manager told me last night about the plans in the wake of the report from the idp last night. Take a listen. You can expect us to be asking the Iowa Democratic party for a recanvas of the discrepancies we have identified and found for them. We will be asking them to take a look at some of these obvious discrepancies that have affected our count. After all is said and done, it should be the case we have the same number of National Delegates as Pete Buttigieg. So we dont know what specific discrepancies they are talking about yet. They did issue a lengthy list of discrepancies in the first round of this accounting process to the idp and Democratic Party in iowa said they would address those originally. Now they are going to take one more look at it. Its clear they want to make sure they have access to every single available delegate, even if its a one or two delegate split in iowa. Before we pronounce any campaign dead in the water, its an eight delegate difference between biden and buttigieg there. You need thousands to win a nomination. Ryan nobles, thank you very much. Jessica following the campaign. Former Vice President he more so than in the past aiming his fire at Pete Buttigieg. Yeah. Interesting, right . He and Bernie Sanders have one thing in common, they have turned their attention to Pete Buttigieg and we saw that play out over the weekend here in New Hampshire. The Vice President had really been hesitant to call it out directly but he certainly did that starting on saturday. We saw a digital video that his campaign put out directly comparing the experience the mayor of south bend has versus the Vice President s experience and knocking the mayors experience there in south bend. They kind of went back and forth with each other over the weekend. Ill let you listen to a little of it. Come on, this guy is not a barack obama. Hes right, im not. Neither is he. Neither is any of us running for president. This isnt 2008, its 2020. We are in a new moment calling for a different kind of leadership. Look, we are facing the most disruptive president in modern times. I dont think the same playbook that helped us get here is going to work against him. Interestingly yesterday i was with Vice President biden on the trail and we really didnt hear him directly attacking Pete Buttigieg. He said he congratulated him and Bernie Sanders saying they were better organized in iowa. Then he turned to what we hear time and time again from joe biden which is you have to take the first four nominating stay as a package. They want to see what happened in New Hampshire and north carolina. The argument from joe biden is that he is the one who has overwhelming support from africanamerican voters. Thats a key demographic within the Democratic Party and you have to have that support to get the nomination. That is what they continue to poke at is Pete Buttigieg doesnt have that support, jim and poppy. But they certainly are ready to move onto the next phase to get to nevada and South Carolina. They have to get through New Hampshire first to see where hell place among these candidates. Jess, dont go anywhere. Stay with us. The background is a perfect picture. Nice to have snow. All it does is rain in new york city. Try to enjoy the snow. Stay there. Andy smith is with us director of university of New Hampshire survey center. Andy, good to have you. Let me begin with you. Klobuchar, i think, objectively speaking, whether you like her or not, knocked it out of the park in that debate friday night like she needed to. Shes raised millions of dollars since. Does she actually have the most on the line in New Hampshire in terms of whether she can go on or is it someone else . I think actually klobuchar and joe biden have the most on the line in joe biden. Klobuchar because shes out of funds, certainly with what the others have raised. Biden, the message pushed by his campaign. If you dont win in the first two states you become less elect i believe and voters in other states will use that for their evaluation. Tell us how the biden cam paper is responding to that argument. Again, it is very early in this race, by the way. I will say bill clinton finished third in New Hampshire in 1992 and called himself the comeback kid and went on from there to two terms as president. Right. Thats exactly right. Jim, poppy, you talked a little about the delegate percentage we saw out of iowa, zoom out big picture, what were hearing from the biden campaign, this is a long road, were at the beginning of it. You will also hear from them, as i said previously over and over again, they go back to lets see what happens once were done with South Carolina and then sling shot into super tuesday where were getting a big chunk of voters, a diverse chunk of voters and lets see what they have to say. I think the point is also valid, that, look, when youre winning, when youre Pete Buttigieg, if you win iowa and you do really, really well in New Hampshire, maybe people start to give you a second look. Youve got that winner shine on you. Biden campaign under pressure not just to win South Carolina but to overperform there and really have a knockout performance. Can i ask you, there was an important question raised to the campaign this weekend and they really didnt give an answer. A lot has been made about how he dealt with the crime bell, et cetera, back in the 90s. Not a lot of attention until now on 1996 welfare reform and what that meant for minority communities. His campaign failed to address this weekend whether or not to answer directly does he still stand by his vote for welfare reform, which, of course, sanders was opposed to. When hes banking so much on the Minority Community supporting him in this election, could that hurt him to not have a direct answer on that . Yeah. I think a lot of these questions that come to them, that we saw kind of play out over the summer. You talked about the crime bill, that was certainly one. It seems like this is a similar one. When you go and travel with him, lets say to South Carolina, theres just such overwhelming support, especially among older black voters who really know him, trust him and thats been what weve seen in his rallies. To your point, poppy, when the stakes are shifting, when youre not coming out on top and people have questions, you have to answer them and answer them directly especially when were hearing people look around, giving people a second chance, a second look, youre exactly right. So the debate in the Democratic Party right now, you might say panic is between the Progressive Left leaning path and a more moderate path. Representatives say buttigieg, biden. In New Hampshire where is the voter divide there . Where is it leaning . Well, historically New Hampshire has had about 40 of the electorate democratic electorate at the progressive end and 60 moderate to conservative wing. I think the Political Energy is in the progressive end of the Democratic Party. I think were seeing that with bernie supporters just being much more energetic and enthusiastic than supporters of other candidates. I think that gives bernie a little bit of an advantage. Going forward, i think its going to be really important, again, to see what happens. We have a misconception voters in states after New Hampshire are getting the same sort of campaigning and same paying the same sort of attention that voters in New Hampshire do. Historically nobody has won the nomination without coming in first or second in New Hampshire. What happened to elizabeth warren. You look at the new cnn polling that came out yesterday in New Hampshire specifically, your state, and look at warren versus sanders in terms of that liberal contingent just in october. She was ahead of him by two points. Now he holds 46 of the support from liberal voters versus 13 for warren. What happened . They are both fighting over the same voters. The big thing that happened with warren is, she peaked too early. You dont want to peak in the fall, in the summer, you want to peak in january and february. I think she was just a little too early and voters have moved back to bernie. One other thing i should say. Bernie is now seen as the most electable candidate among the democratic field in New Hampshire. Thats a remarkable change, because that has been at the top of the list youll often see as to the quality they wont most. Thanks to both of you. Still to come this hour, the number of coronavirus cases on a quarantined cruise ship has doubled skyrocketing 65 new cases, this is the death toll internationally from the virus has now surpassed that of the stars pandemic. There are now 65 new cases of coronavirus on a quarantined ship off the coast of japan. At least 24 of the 135 passengers confirmed to have the virus are americans. Ambulances have been seen transporting some of those infected patients to hospitals in tokyo. To date coronavirus has killed 910 people around the world. That means more people have died from this virus than from the entire sars outbreak back in 2003. For the first time today chinese president xi jinping was seen wearing a mask, face mask, while visiting a hospital in beijing. Our coordinator david culver is there. David. Reporter hey there, poppy a and. We havent seen him surface through much of the entire crisis. There was one a week or so back but wasnt relevant to what was going on here in the daytoday fight, the outbreak. This was to a community hospital, Disease Control center. Its interesting the timing of this for two reasons. One, you make that mention of coming past the death toll from sars in 2003. That was a significant moment here. To go past that globally in the number of those killed, thats something from a pr perspective china wants to push back against and show they still have this under control and they are still trying to go forward with what they liken to almost a warlike battle, if you will. So who did they put on the front lines in state media but president xi himself. President xi has taken a back seat publicly, it seems, because of the negativity that has surrounded this. Youve got to remember where this originated. It was at the local level, wuhan, hubei province. Early on you had a lot of negativity thrown at those local leaders, then the Central Government stepped in. President xi became really the one im taking demand of deployment and coordination. When he did that, it stops at him. When some of the negative headlines start to surface, the concern here from state media in particular and Propaganda Machine doesnt like this either, you start to blur the two lines of some of the issues and president xi. So they like to buffer that. Thats why it was so important to see him today and try to stress in his words they are trying to stabilize and go forth. Jim and poppy, its worth noting going around here you start to see more surveillance, something china pushed forward, going into apartment complexes, everywhere. We saw drones talking to people, floating over peoples heads. Were joined by the author of the book the coming plague. Thanks for coming. Thank you. The death toll has surpassed sars. What struck me, a difference is huge injury in global air travel between now and then. Its more than doubled, 691 passengers. How does that explain the spread of this and the global response. Jim, i was thinking in 2003 with the sars epidemic i was in beijing and i reported some information for cnn and it was censored. No one in asia could see that information. It was the first time they blocked all cnn transmissions across the asian region. Hour we are a situation where china is much more integrated into the planet. They have this belt and Road Initiative that goes already to more than 60 nations. They have a reach into Subsarahan Africa completely cut off from china in 2003. We see that slowly different parts of the planet are starting to realize, you know, this could come here. They are starting to talk about readiness. I fear they are too late. That everybody is dragging their feet in getting ready for this and i feel its going to explode. Thats alarming. It is. What does that mean for the United States . There have not been reports of i think any new cases at least in the last few days in the United States. What is that indicative of to you . Well, one thing thats great in the United States is that our cdc managed a good test kit to find out who is infected. It works in four to five hours time once you have a patient and sample to test. They have now dispersed that out to Health Departments all over the United States. The good news is as cases appear we should be able to rapidly figure out, is this real or not real. Is this person infected or n infected. Thats good news. If we can identify infected patients and put them away from the rest of the community and not in a situation where they might contaminate a whole hospital as happened with sars and has apparently been one of the key features of this outbreak in china, then i think we may be able to buy ourselves time to really get the country together. Tell us about the death toll here. Sars had an alarmingly high death rate of sars. H1n1, smaller, below 1 . Do we have a sense here of just how deadly this is . We are getting tremendously variant answers to that question. Geez. There are accusations that officials in wuhan have been manipulating data in order to have the data reconcile with the 2 case fatality rate. So you only report so many cases and then you have a fatality rate, somehow it comes out at 2 . Very different city on the other side of china that is having a huge outbreak reports of 4. 8 case fatality rate. Of course, everybody is going to be watching these cruise ships, particularly the one off yokohama to see what actually unfolds with these people. Is this a petri dish to understand as whole and what the mortality rate is. Thank you for that. Sobering comments. Well stay on top if we can. Thank you very much. Youre fired. Wants the defense departments acting Inspector General to investigate witness retaliation by the president. This, of course, follows trumps fire of two key impeachment witnesses Lieutenant ColonelAlexander Vindman and trump appointee and trump donor Eu AmbassadorGordon Sondland. Cnn learned lieutenant vindman and sondland planning to exit on their own before the abrupt firings by the president. Republicans advised to let it be and let them leave on their own but the president didnt want them to go quietly. J. W. Barrett, worked on the trump transition team, associate professor of law at george ma mn university. Apparently they said to the president or his people, just let them go, dont make a thing of this. The president wanted this to be a thing. Why . Well, this is a president who thinks in terms that are transactional. If you help me, im going to do something good for you, Say Something good about you. If you hurt me, im coming after you. Kellyanne conway, the president s adviser, was in the Briefing Room a few minutes ago and she said winning finishes a lot of sentences. The president won the acquittal vote now hes acting of the of the two firings, i should say, the Gordon Sondland one seems much more understandable to me. He was a political appointee who bought the ambassadorship with pa Million Dollar donation. Not surprising he might be removed from the post. I think the one concerning from a political norm point of view is that of Lieutenant Colonel vindman, who is a career official nonpartisan, nonpolitical official. Even if as the Administration Says he wasnt exactly fired because hes gone to the defense department, the president felt the need to try to mock him tweeting out something putting Lieutenant Colonel in quotes even though this is someone who won a purple heart for his service. Also marched his twin brother out. Not sure the reason for that except guilt by association. You say the president feels empowered now. Im just going to quote your tweet. Trump will feel empowered now. His ego and demons will lead him to overstep again in a dramatic way in the near future that creates another scandal. I wonder if in your view this will lead the president to feel he can seek foreign help in the election. They are vetting information Rudy Giuliani gathered in ukraine from very questionable sources. I think theres no question but that he will attempt to do it. Its shameful to see what happened to Lieutenant Colonel vindman. Im not sorry to see sondland go, he didnt acquit himself well. He participated in a violation of law. It took two or three times to come forward to congress. The vindman hiring isnt acceptable. The only thing to prevent trump to collude with a foreign power for a third time looks like frontrunners, probably russia doesnt have any dirt on them. Maybe they can hack the servers. Its worrisome. He will be impeached again, i dont know for what, and it will be legitimate. It could be for things personal having to do with his company. Just to stick on that for a moment, if people missed in the intro when i said you worked for the president , on the transition team. You were a believer, a supporter and now youre saying youre hes going to be impeached again. I was marco rubio. I left when i saw what was going on. In the Transitional Team the conventional wisdom is dont mess with the Foreign Policy stuff because theres weird stuff going on with ukraine. I dont know, something to do with russia and ukraine. It was just too strange for me and thats why i left. Poppy and jim, let me just add one other thing to what you mentioned in the intro about those republican senators. It is comically ineffectual. If its one thing ive learned in the administration so far its that republican senators while bowing to the president , essentially doing in almost every circumstance what he wants, obviously john mccain was a big exception to that, they will express concern, dismay about things. They will make gestures designed to show they recognize there are some norms hes transgressing but there is no effective, meaningful consequential action that they take. This just ubd scores Susan Collins and others. Saying before the acquittal. I think the president learned his lesson, that is not the case. The protest they issued there for the reporting was just to say dont do the firing now because it will look bad. They didnt come, j. W. , to the defense of vindman, a wounded veteran or to the principle here, right . I wish john mccain was still here. I think he would have come to his defense. I think its shameful not to defend him even though he was set to rotate out in july. The fact trump took this petty action to let him go a few months early and make fun of his is dishonorable. John, the white house and president it seems do not believe there will be any consequences at all. In fact, the Justice Department is vetting stuff that Rudy Giuliani is bringing back from ukraine. There is certainly not going to be any consequence on this from republicans in the senate or the house for that matter. They have thrown their lot in with this president. The real question is going to be, as was discussed during the impeachment trial, what do the voters have to say about it. Do they feel as j. W. Does, that this is a shameful and outrageous way to conduct the governments business. The president was at 49 approval in gallop last week, has support almost unanimously of his party but weve got a long way to go in the campaign and democrats are certainly going to try to make the case that behavior like this justifies removing the president. Well see what they decide. Also the question is what do people hear in their information silos, right . Do they hear it completely . The fact is they do hear a completely different narrative, fact based or not. Thanks to both of you. Democrats are now sharpening their attacks oppose each ahead of the nations first primary. Com in hours the very first votes of 2020 will happen and soon we will know who democrats in New Hampshire want their nominee to be. Keep in mind it is a state Bernie Sanders won big in 2016 and a state Hillary Clinton went on to barely beat trump in the general election. With me congressman papas from the state of virginia. Thanks for taking time this morning. Good morning, jim, good to be with you. Less than 24 hurst to make your vote. Who are you supporting in the primary . So im staying out of the contest. Ill be voting in the democratic primary, obviously, but i want to be a good ambassador for the state. Theres a lot of energy out there and i think voters have to figure this out on their own. I trust the voters of New Hampshire to sort through the messages they are hearing and find the person best equipped to win the election and help bring the country together. I think thats what its all about. What kind of candidate is best equipped to win the election, progressive, left leaning, democratic socialist like Bernie Sanders or more moderate candidate like biden or buttigieg. Who can beat trump in your view . I think weve got to look at the past and what we just went through in 2018. I ran for congress that year and so many others did across the country. Ran on how to get things done on prescription drugs and health care and infrastructure. I think people are looking for candidates who can speak to the issues that persons care most about. Weve had a really robust conversation in New Hampshire. Weve had an opportunity to shape the field beyond tomorrow and shape the National Debate but i dont think we should forget the lessons of the last years. Democrats have won in red states, purple states. Mainstream candidates that speak to the issues they care about. I hope when we go forward that will help shape the contest. That sounds very much like when you say mainstream, what worked, for instance, in 2018, flipping red districts to blue, thats very much like you say a moderate candidate not far left candidate, progressive candid e candidate. I think there are a number of candidates that can enight the party. I trust the process to get us there. New hampshire is at the beginning of the pack. We are expecting what could be a record turnout in the New Hampshire democratic primary. Independents are going to be an early indicator of where this contest will go. 42 of voters in the state are independent voters that can pick up either ballot. If they are largely voting in the democratic primary and helping shape who the nominee of our party is, i think that speaks well for chances in the general election of defeating donald trump. People are really constructive right now. In part, ive never seen so many undecided voters out there. They understand the stakes are really high. They are trying to get this right. So i think there are a number of candidates that they like and ultimately, you know, i think the voters will speak loudly tomorrow. So you want, in a county that pivoted to trump in 2016. Youre in touch with voters who might go to one party or the other party. Im curious based on your political sense here, did impeachment hurt democrats and energize, rally people around the president in your district . Well, i think theres no doubt the conversation around impeachment brought out folks on all sides of the political spectrum. I know in the Congressional Office we heard from every point of view. Folks who supported the president , folks in the middle, folks on the democratic side who really wanted the president impeached. A sense the president did something wrong, abused the power of his office. They think the trial held in the senate was a sham and there should have been evidence and witnesses and they know we need to continue to do our work. Thats why when i get back to washington tonight, weve got work to do to address infrastructure in this country, protect the environment, make sure were investing priorities of this nation that help support middle class families. Thats where the conversation continues to need to be. This should not be about personality. This should not be about getting donald trump. Its not about getting to the heart of the issues voters care about most. So what is that contradictory message to trump, particularly on the economy. You watch the news. Strong support on friday. What is the democratic response to that, not as good as i think, how do you energize, rally around a message on democrats for november . It was the message we delivered in 2018 very successfully, which is this an economy growing for about a decade now. There are so many families not sharing in economic success of america. Families struggling to pay for the cost of housing and child care, Higher Education taking on debt, to get a degree that makes sense for them. Weve got to really make sure were protecting middle class families, building economic activity, supporting the rights of workers to organize in this country, looking for ways to lift all votes. I think that, you know, corporate profits are doing well. Wall street and dow jones is doing well but thats not necessarily felt on main street. Thats what the candidates have been hearing consistently over the last many months. Weve got a job to do to make sure this is an economy that works for everyone. Quick question before we go. You made history, you were the states first openly gay congressman. Pete buttigieg first openly gay National Candidate for the presidency here. The House Majority whip told my colleague dana bash in november that for africanamerican voters that is an issue. Its an issue, a negative issue. I just wonder, is he right and how does Pete Buttigieg address that Going Forward . I think when candidates are open and honest about who they are, its a net plus. I think mayor buttigieg has seen that out on the campaign trail in iowa and now New Hampshire. People appreciate his authenticity. I think its important that everyone has a seat at the table. Thats what was so critical about the 2018 elections we elected a more diverse congress. When you do that, it means everyone is represented. I think his candidacy says so much about how far weve come, everyone can meet their truth. He probably meets people on the campaign trail all the time, young lgtbq americans, questioning, wondering if this nation has a place for them. His candidacy confirms that. I think people in this country are kind, generous, decent people. This is a live and let live state in New Hampshire. We were on the leading edge of passing Marriage Equality legislatively, respecting everyone. Weve got to make sure everyone is on equal footing and i think his candidacy will be embraced largely by americans. Wise words. Congressman, real pleasure to have you on the show this morning. Thanks so much. All right. It was not that long ago that you heard the president talking about love with north koreas kim jongun. Now he doesnt want a third summit . Well tell you about that. Also the world has watched pretty much their every move. Now cnn presents the story of the worlds most famous royals, the windsors, inside the Royal Dynasty premiers sunday 10 00 p. M. Cnn has learned possible third summit between President Trump and north Korean Leader kim jongun likely not going to happen before the election. Apparently the president doesnt want it. The leaders last met in june when President Trump became the first sitting american president to step into north korean territory. Youll remember thats the scene there. Since then the relationship has cooled, negotiations have frozen. Kylie at wowood joins us now. You hear the talk has waned as his Reelection Campaign ramps up. I imagine this is tied to the lack of progress we have seen at the working level. Exactly. That is one of the reasons, jim. So we are reporting that President Trump has told top Foreign Policy advisers that as you said, he does not want another summit with kim jongun ahead of his president ial election in november. These comments came at the end of last year, after he was frustrated because the working level negotiations happened in october, essentially fell apart with the North Koreans pointing their finger at the u. S. Side saying they hadnt showed up prepared for negotiations. The u. S. Tried to cast it in a more positive light. The bottom line is that the parties have not come back to the negotiating table. And President Trump hasnt talked about north korea much at all in recent weeks, during his state of the Union Address last week, he didnt reference north korea or kim jongun once. That is a stark contrast with regard to last year because youll remember that he used that address to the nation to announce that he was going to be having his second summit with kim jongun just weeks later. And he was also asked about north korea at the end of last year. He essentially told reporters, listen, im leading my country, kim jongun is leading his and we both have things we have to do. One of those things for President Trump is his Reelection Campaign and sources tell me that he doesnt see the campaign does not see north korea as an integral part to him winning reelection come november. Demonstration that they havent made progress, summits but no progress on the Nuclear Program and dont want to advertise that. Thank you very much. The pentagon has now identified two u. S. Soldiers killed during an attack in afghanistan. They were Sergeant First ClassJavier Gutierrez and Sergeant First Class antonio rodriguez, killed saturday at a joint u. S. Afghan base in the eastern part of the country. Six other Service Members were also wounded in that attack. They are among the 13,000 u. S. Troops stationed in afghanistan fighting americas longest war. Barbara starr has more for us this morning. Apparently the troops were leaving the meeting with local officials when a man in an Afghan Security uniform opened fire with a machine gun on them, leading to the death of these two americans and wounding of six others. Now, the pentagon has not yet officially discussed what they believe could be any possible motive for this taattack. It is not clear whether the person was somebody not an Afghan Security member, but in a uniform, perhaps stolen, or was the person a member of Afghan Security forces. All of this goes to the question of motive. It is not clear if it was an ambush or this person was even aiming at the americans at the time. All of that still under investigation. But as you say, it comes at a very tough time in afghanistan. 13,000 troops there, Trump Administration very much looking to reduce that number, bring it down to just over 8,000. But 22 americans lost their lives in afghanistan, just last year. The highest level since 2014. It remains very violent, very dangerous for the troops there, of course. Certainly does. Reminder of that with these two lives lost. Barbara, thank you for the reporting from the pentagon.
