Economy. Theyve been hearing us talk for three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten years now about how the economy is healing and the jobs market is growing. So you still have this mighty jobs machine ten years into this recovery. The sectors here, you can see some of that weather at play. Construction doing well. Transportation warehousing had another 28,000. Health care, this is a really strong part of the economy. Consistently one of the top performers every month in health care. All up and down the wage spectrum. Lees your and hospitality. Bars and restaurants. They had another good showing. 36,000 jobs over the past six months. And bars and restaurants have added almost 300,000 jobs. So thats something to note there. You saw manufacturing down again, though. Im telling you, there are economists who say it feels like a recession in manufacturing. Trade wars still hanging over that sector. Watching that very closely. Okay. Wages because theres been some data consistently for a number of years that wages have stayed flat even as the job market has tightened. Ive been expecting paychecks to get bigger for two or three years now and they havent. 3. 1 . A little over 3 is what wage growth is. Some economists are just expecting if numbers stay like this youll start getting fatter paychecks heading into this year. There has been some decent wage growth on the low end of the spectrum. Theres a lot of demand for those bar and restaurant workers and retail workers, so they have a little bit of, i guess, bargaining power, for wages. But also because so many states, a Record Number of states have raised minimum wages. At the very low end of the income ladder because states have acted, not the federal government, but states, youre seeing wages rise there. Id like to see hotter wage growth, no question. But maybe that will come this year. Thats not the market in that case. Thats legislation. Christine romans, thanks very much. Certainly political implications possibly in 2020. The wage growth for the Trump Administration just barely lags the wage growth for the Obama Administration. So politically, this has been a decent labor market for some time now. No question. Christine romans, thanks very much. Another breaking news story that were following this morning. It is a new front in the battle against the coronavirus. And it is forming right here in the u. S. Doctors now assessing passengers on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship docked in new jersey, not far from manhattan. Officials with the cdc say some of those on board had traveled to china. Thats the epicenter of this outbreak. Cnns Polo Sandoval live in bayonne, new jersey. Are there concerns some on this ship are already infected . I can tell you at this point, the centers for Disease Control saying this is a preliminary assessment out of an abundance of caution after several passengers on this trip had recent travel to china. Cdc officials met the ship when it pulled into the port of bayonne early this morning. They made their way on board to make that assessment. Off in the distance, the gangway where you can see some of these passengers are stepping off of this ship. Of course, that certainly would lead us to believe at this point as we wait to hear more from officials that they do not have any reason to believe, at this point, that anybody is actually infected with the coronavirus. This is being done as an abundance of caution. We have noticed this one individual that was taken away by paramedics. However it should be clear it remains unclear why that person was on that gurney and being brought off the ship and seeking medical attention. It certainly just speaks to a lot of uncertainty at this point for some passengers. Don silverman, one of the passengers aboard this ship telling cnn he had no idea this was even happening. It wasnt until he turned on his tv before he disembarked that he saw the news on tv. But as for the cruise line itself, Royal Caribbean saying that they are taking these precautions at this point. They are clearly monitoring the situation. And that there are rigorous protocols to try and ensure the wellbeing of not only their passengers but crew as well. Close to 5,000 people would be expected to be on this ship for the cruise itself. It shows the abundance of caution. Authorities around the world are taking. Polo will continue to follow this and see how serious it is there. 11 americans are now among a group of 61 people to test positive for coronavirus aboard a cruise ship. This one quarantined off the coast of japan where we have will ripley in yokohama, japan. Tell us what the latest is there. This is a case where we know there are infections on board. Yes. In fact, that cruise ship, the diamond princess here in yokohama is the largest concentration of coronavirus patients in the world right now outside of Mainland China which, of course, has the huge number of cases. 31,000plus. And around 600 deaths or more at this stage. On the cruise ship, you have 61 people. Just 20 people yesterday. The number more than tripled overnight. 11 americans on that list. 428 americans on the ship. So, obviously, a big group of people from the united states. And the majority of them are still on the boat right now under quarantine. So quarantine means you no longer get to enjoy the amenities. No more allnight buffet or casino. Its in your room 23 hours a day. One hour a day you might be let out. Under close supervision. You have to stand three feet from other people, wear a face mask and passengers dont know how long this is going to last. I spoke with an American Woman from oregon as she found out that she tested positive for coronavirus. Listen. A little bit scared. Hard to know what the future holds since i dont really feel sick right now. Like, is it going to get worse . Whats the hardest part . The unknown. Like i dont know whats going to happen an hour from now, tomorrow. Like for all we know, we could stay quarantined on the ship for a month. So when she told us that, that was when Health Workers said there may be a chance she could come become on the ship after a few days if her symptoms didnt get too worse. Shes going to have to be in a quarantine hospital about an hour a drive for the next two weeks, possibly longer. She and her husband who had been basically been on their dream vacation, theyre now separated. Hes sitting in their cabin alone wondering if hes going to test positive. Hes been given a thermometer and told to check his temperature regularly and contact the health authorities. A really scary situation. 23 hours confinement. Sound like floating prisons at this point. May well be a necessary precaution. Will ripley, thanks very much. Lets speak to dr. Sanjay gupta now to get a sense of the seriousness. Great to have you on this morning. As you look at the steps that countries around the world are taking from china, cutting off entire cities of tens of millions of people, cruise ships being stopped, they are being screened, based on what you know about this, are these steps smart . Are they necessary . It is the critical question and one thing ill say at the beginning is that this is a new virus. We keep referring to it as a novel virus. And that means that theres still a lot about this virus that we dont know. We worry. People, Public Health officials worry as it spreads more, could be mutating more. Thats what Public Health officials are keeping an eye on to understand why this virus behaves. To your question. I think that if you look at some of the numbers, the official numbers, the people who have this infection. 600 people have confirmed to have died from this. Theres other Public Health officials who say the numbers are probably much larger in terms of numbers of infected. Thats bad news when you hear that but also keep in mind many of those people may have minimal or no symptoms as well. So therein lies potentially good news also. Does the quarantine work, if this is spread that far . Probably not. Does it make sense not to go to china and visit these areas where we know its spreading rapidly. Probably not. So i think both are true. These larger quarantines, and its a bit of an uneven response. One cruise line versus another cruise line. One place versus another place. That uneven response is what ive seen. Were still figuring this out to some extent, jim. So a big question here is, what category this outbreak, the virus ends up in. Is it more sarslike that had a high death rate, around 10 , though lower spread or like h1n1, had more cases but a much lower death rate. What does the data show us . Those are the two critical questions . How transmissible is this and how lethal is this. Let me put this box up for a second to make this point. Youre right. When you looked at bird flu, h1n1, that was more in the b box which is lethal, but not necessarily as transmissible. Flu is going to be something thats more in the c box. Very transmissible but not necessarily very lethal. Public Health Officials worry that d box. Something that is spreading quickly and very lethal. This appears at this point to be more in the a box. It is contagious. But you have to be close in close quarters with somebody. Three to six feet to give you an example. Theres been two humantohuman transmissions. They were people who lived with the person infected. So the general risk to the population appears low. As we hear about more and more cases, that fatality ratio, just how lethal this is, well continue to go down because you have, i think, around 600 deaths. Confirmed 30 infections. That places it around 2 or so. Lets say its closer to 100,000 or 120,000 as you are hearing from some reports. Thats going to drop it down below a percent in terms of fatality ratio. So its a little bit of good news in there. I know people are going to focus on the numbers and say this is outrageous. Its spreading quickly around the world. That may be true. But the question thats starting to get asked, is this the next Global Pandemic or is this another new flu that happens to be a new flu. It seems to be teetering toward the second scenario, bad flu. Okay. Thats why we bring you on, sanjay. You help give us a reality check. Youll stay on top of it. Thanks very much. Still to come all the votes are now in from the iowa caucus, but we still do not have a clear winner there. Certainly very close. Well be live in des moines next. Pete buttigieg still ahead of Bernie Sanders by a razorthin margin there. 0. 1 percentage point. And a new cnn Analysis Shows errors in the count reported by the Iowa Democratic party, even all these days later. After days to get the results in the first time, they want a recanvas of the votes, a recount. Joining me, jeff zeleny and senior political analyst keith preston. They found discrepancies district by district. How serious were those discrepancies, and does it call into question the key question, right, of who actually came out ahead here . Jim, good morning. The reality is there are some discrepancies. Small discrepancies as we see them in how the math is formulated for the state delegate equivalents. There is no sense that it would affect the overall outcome of this. As you said, so close between Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders. 0. 1 percentage point. Thats with 100 of precincts counted. Now were waiting to see if the Iowa Democratic party is going to recanvas. That would only come if its requested by a campaign. The chairman of the Democratic Committee asked for one yesterday but the rules only allow that to happen if it comes from a campaign. And both Bernie Sanders and Pete Buttigieg suggested they were ready to move on. But this is what chairman perez said this morning on new day. This was unacceptable. And thats why we had people we still have people on the ground there. We completed the counting last night and well continue not only to work in iowa but also to learn the lessons of iowa. So theres no question that this begins this democratic nominating process with an embarrassing opening. Well find out around noon central time today, 1 00 in the east, whether there is likely to be a request for a recanvass. And it would is basically just going over the numbers to see if they all reconcile. We know they dont but in a few hours well know if they do that here or not. Does that present yet more questions . Mark, i think folks at home might wonder, is this an iowa only problem or indicative of a bro broader issue as we go forward in the primaries . Certainly when were talking about the counting and the situation were in, it appears it is just in iowa. But it certainly has put a bright spotlight on the idea that perhaps caucuses now are outdated. That theyre not an actual smart way to try to find out who should be your nominee, whether it be for the Democratic Party or the republican party. Where i sit here in New Hampshire, theres a bit of glo gloating from folks up here saying well get the count right. Theyre saying this because this is a primary run by the state, not by the Political Party as weve seen in iowa. So i do think this is an iowa only problem. Id be shocked if the buttigieg or Sanders Campaign demanded a recanvass with the idea of using it to declare victory. Last night on cnn, both of them declared victory. Pete buttigieg learned that he had won on our air last night by that razorthin margin. Both men can come out of iowa into New Hampshire claiming victory. Washington posts jeff zeleny has a story talking about joe biden saying hes missing in action now in New Hampshire. Just five days before the crucial primary, Washington Post writes here the candidate was nowhere to be found. Whats happening, and how much of a warning sign is that . Well, hes preparing for a crucial moment tonight for that debate. There is a debate tonight in New Hampshire, and that is a moment for joe biden to reset his candidacy. Weve already seen him do that throughout the week going directly after Pete Buttigiegs experience, going directly after Bernie Sanders, whether he is or is not a democrat. That was always a question if joe biden was going to actually go there and question Pete Buttigieg by name, his experience. He decided not to in iowa. Clearly he needs to shake things up. Thats why hes not campaigning front and center. He is doing some practice. But, look, this is a key moment for the Biden Campaign. They know theyll not win New Hampshire. The question is, can he survive and get to those states later this month, nevada and south carolina. But certainly some tense moments in the Biden Campaign over the coming days, no question, jim. Remarkable even to use that word survive for the frontrunner for so many months. Effectively given their strength in New Hampshire, buttigieg and sanders, are they the two frontrunners now . I think so. I mean, look, to say that theyre not at this point would be kind of silly. But its still early on. When were talking about this fight for the nomination, its all about the accumulation of delegates, even though we on the media talk about momentum, and that is true. The fact of the matter is this could be a very long, drawn out process. Right now some very strong democratic candidates, and right now its interesting. You have Pete Buttigieg and Bernie Sanders, two gentlemen you could never put in the same room and say, wow, these two gentlemen are going to be the frontrunners in 2020. It so happens that they are. Dont forget surprises happen. Of course, Mike Bloomberg spending a lot of money with super tuesday strategy. Jeff zeleny, mark prefts ston, thanks to both of you. Lets speak with jessica dean in manchester, New Hampshire. How are the campaigns reacting . The polling weve seen here and also final word from iowa . Right. So here we are. Its friday now of the week. The campaigns are in New Hampshire still talking about iowa which is still remarkable. And Bernie Sanders and Pete Buttigieg both on the scene in town hall stage last night. I want to have you listen to what they said about iowa and any recanvassing. Should they have a recount in iowa . Whatever they need to do to make sure its clear and verified. Would you request one . Ill leave it to the party. Weve got enough of iowa. I think we should move on to New Hampshire. It is really sad that the Democratic Party of iowa, if i may say so, screwed up the counting process quite so badly. Jim, look, these campaigns are ready to turn their focus to New Hampshire. That is what is next on the docket. Thats whats important for momentum Going Forward in this nomination process. Theyve got the debate tonight. They all have a number of events over the weekend. And if we know anything about New Hampshire, it likes to be a check on iowa. It likes to provide some surprises sometimes so what might that be . Well, well see what the next few days bring out, tease out from what we might see on tuesday. Iowans, folks in New Hampshire very proud about their early role in selecting the nominees. Jessica dean there. Im jealous of your snow. Its just raining here in washington, excessively. Other news, a strong jobs report released just days after the president was acquitted. All this as the democrats may recanvass votes after the count in iowa. What does this all mean for 2020 . All this clearly emboldening the president as democrats are struggle with their campaign to win back the white house. What does this mean for 2020 . Senior political analyst david gergen and robert barnett. Great to have you on. David, if i could begin with you. These job numbers, good for the president. Continuing a good economic story here. Obviously, helps his case in 2020. Whats the democratic answer to that . Do they have one . Have they articulated one . They dont have one yet. They are struggling to find it. They have to find a candidate, a message and build excitement. Thats not where they are. We do have a neck and neck race in New Hampshire, which i think will spice it up. The fact that Pete Buttigieg has drawn even statistically with Bernie Sanders is provides excitement. But i think the big story, the big story is the possible collapse of joe bidens campaign. Hes got to come back from where he is. Hes disappearing now and running in fourth in the latest poll out of there, the boston globe poll. Thats not a comfortable place to be. Id be interested in bobs views. I want to talk about biden. Before we talk about biden, lets talk about trump. Hes got these economic numbers. He was acquitted. He had a republican vote to remove him from office, no small thing, but he feels unleashed here. Should folks be looking for that now as americans. Will he feel he has license to even seek foreign help in the election . The essential core of the allegation in the impeachment . The president had a very solid week from his point of view. It started with the state of the union. The acquittal, the jobs numbers, the ceremony at the white house. I worry that the message that was sent by virtue of the acquittal will give the president license and almost anything is possible. I think second impeachment is highly unlikely and the checks and balances have been eroded because of the vote that took place. Im hopeful that, start with the debate tonight and carrying on through the next states, well hear a program, well hear what the democrats are for. Well hear about health care. Well hear about immigration. Well hear about the things that people care about, not the sniping between and among the candidates, but my hope will probably not be rewarded. They are still fighting tooth and nail. Youve watched a lot of president ial campaigns. You look at this field. Its early. Weve had just iowa vote, but buttigieg and sanders are looking strong in New Hampshire again. Momentum is such a factor here. You look at the democratic field, do they have it to unseat donald trump . I think theres a widespread view among democrats that they dont and that theyre hoping Pete Buttigieg, if hes going to continue to soar like this will quickly get some seasoning and somehow by greater majority, i thought he was effective in the town hall. He answers questions extremely well. Hes very thoughtful. But from the democrats point of view, their worry now is the two frontrunners, for at least this week, the two frontrunners, one is an avowed socialist and the other is mayor has been the mayor of a city of 100,000 people. Those are not exactly ideal candidates. And i have a strong sense that the bloomberg people are really, you know, winding up, getting ready to jump into this fray. Theyve already spent 300 million. How much more do they go . David gergen, of course, raised this. Where is joe biden . The Washington Post has a story today that hes missing in action in New Hampshire. He sees the numbers there which are not particularly positive for him. Just five days before the crucial primary, the candidate was nowhere to be found. Hes in delaware trying to really reenergize his campaign. How weakened is he, in your view . A little counterintuitive. Hes doing debate prep. Thats what you do the day before and the day of a debate. I dont read too much in the fact hes in delaware. He could be doing debate prep in New Hampshire. Hes doing it in delaware. I think that he had a gut punch, as he said, in iowa. I think its a huge mistake to count him out until there are four of these. Weve had iowa. Now were going to have nh and nv and then sc. Lets remember what these are. Nh has kicked front runners in the gut a lot of times. Talk about the comeback kid. Remember Chris Christie and marco rubio. George w. Bush. No question, no question. Then nv. Theres a latino population there. Theres union. They sure ehelped hillary. Theyre the core of the Democratic Party and strong biden people. Then sc where a vast majority of the voters will be africanamerican which is a core of the Democratic Party and, so far, strongly for joe biden. So until we get past those four, you dont count anybody out. No question. David gergen, the key, it would come november, right, is does whoever that candidate have a message to counter Donald Trumps . If you were advising yes. The frontrunners here, articulate that message for me. Well, if it were biden, id move away from the question of whether hes the guy that can beat trump and move to substance, just as bob laid out there. I think the message that hangs on, whether you are ahead or behind trump, once you fall behind trump, you are the reason for your candidacy begins to collapse. So i think its vital that biden come in with a substantive message. Its well encompassed and not simply get into backing and forthing with the other candidates. Because, look, i think bobs absolutely right. You have the big four and biden may do well in the last two, but i think it makes a difference in New Hampshire whether hes fourth or third or second. If hes in second, thats a much stronger argument. If he comes in fourth in New Hampshire, after a fourth in iowa, there are going to be a lot of people wagging their heads and thinking should we be looking for another frontrunner. Im going to put you on the spot here. If you were betting five bucks on what youve seen from the democratic field and trumps message, will trump be reelected . Bob first and then david. My bet is its too early to quote jim sciutto. He dodges. David, you going to place five bucks on the table . Listen, election were held this week, donald trump would win. And might win big. All right. David gergen, robert barnett, well bring you back and test it again and im going to get five bucks from you. Mark my words. The impeachment fight, of course, is over. Now sources say a key trump aide who testified in that impeachment actually who didnt testify, another one as well. This key trump aide, Mick Mulvaney, may be on the way out. Straining and bloating. My doctor said i could have a real medical condition called ibsc. For my recurring constipation and belly pain from ibsc. I said yes to linzess. Linzess treats adults with ibs with constipation. Linzess is not a laxative. It works differently. It helps relieve belly pain and lets you have more frequent and complete bowel movements. Do not give to children less than six. And it should not be given to children six to less than 18. It may harm them. Do not take linzess if you have a bowel blockage. Get immediate help if you develop unusual or severe stomach pain. Especially with bloody or black stools. The most common side effect is diarrhea. Sometimes severe. If its severe, stop taking linzess and call your doctor right away. Other side effects include gas, stomach area pain and swelling. Im doing it all. And i said yes to linzess. Ask your doctor about linzess. President trump may now be looking for a new chief of staff, the fourth of his presidency. Cnn learned that Mick Mulvaney could be on his way out soon and that the president was simply waiting to be acquitted to make this move. Cnn White House Correspondent john harwood joins me now. Is the reporting here that the president was disappointed in mulvaneys defense of him . Whats behind this . He certainly wasnt happy that Mick Mulvaney told the truth about the quid pro quo on aid to ukraine which turned out to be the linchpin of the democratic case against him. As ted cruz says in the reporting our colleagues have done, senators believe there was a quid pro quo. The president believes he has a history of having people who he can blame for things that go poorly, discarding them when events go badly and trying to move on. Theres every reason to believe Mick Mulvaney will be that next person, and one of the questions is going to be, does anyone constrain this president . Some of the candidates include mark short who works right now for Vice President pence. Eric euland, the Affairs Director for the president. Mark meadows, the tea party figure in congress. I think the favorite is considered to be meadows, and hes also the one least likely to put constraints on this president and so we will see how he uses the powers of his office in that next phase to strike back at his enemies as he signaled he would yesterday. Speaking of striking back at the president s perceived enemies, Lieutenant ColonelAlexander Vindman, serving officer in the u. S. Army, purple heart recipient and key witness during the impeachment trial, that hes leaving the National Security council. Is it our understanding he was forced out . Yes. Now, in fairness, it certainly got to be uncomfortable for Alexander Vindman to continue working in the white house, having taken risks that he did to go testify before the congress. But we know that this is a president who wants to punish his enemies. And so as i was saying a moment ago, what happens now . Is there an investigation fullscale investigation of hunter biden and joe biden . Is there a fullscale investigation of adam schiff or mitt romney . You cant rule any of these things out because this is a president who doesnt recognize political norms or ethical or constraints of right and wrong. So well see. And it is certainly clear from thatentio event in the white ho that republican senators are not going to be the ones who constrain him because they were applauding those remarks he gave. John harwood telling it like it is at the white house. Thanks very much. President trump now focusing very much on his reelection, believing hes been politically strengthened after the impeachment trial. So how do he and democrats Work TogetherGoing Forward . Can they . More coming up. On the heels of his acquittal in the senate, President Trump appears as emboldened as ever. That was on full display in the east room of the white house thursday. The president took something of a victory lap in front of his republican allies praising his supporters one by one and personally attacking anyone who went against him. But as President Trump touts his acquittal, democrats are really in some sort of disarray following a chaotic week in iowa. Im joined by tina smith of minnesota. Senator, thanks for taking the time this morning. Thanks, jim. Good to be with you. You said something powerful at the end of impeachment. Particularly about republicans who might, in private, have expressed discomfort with the president s behavior but in public refused to and voted with him. At the end of the day what matters is how you vote and what you do and what you say in public. Do you believe that your republican allies, by acquitting the president and even in most cases refusing to criticize his behavior here, have given him license to continue, for instance, to continue seeking foreign help in the election . I think there was Wishful Thinking on the part of some of my colleagues who said, oh, i dont believe hell do it again. I think hes learned his lesson. And then yesterday in the white house, we saw a display that goes exactly counter to that. You know, i have to tell you, i got a text from my father who was almost 90 years old and still chops wood and dad said this is the worst that i have seen since joe mccarthy. And its i mean, if you think about it, what would you think if the your boss at your company said the things that the president said or the principal at your kids school, and yet we have members of congress in the room applauding him for this. This is not who we are as americans. I hear you. And yet, 49 of americans in the latest gallup poll approve of the president s job here. And again, i always look at the poll averages. So the average is not that high but its been trending up, not down, towards impeachment here. What message does that send to you about where American Voters are . Well, the message that i get from this is that, you know, elections are not inevitable. Elections dont just flow in the way this has got to be one of the most fluid electoral seasons that many of us have ever lived through in this country. What i think is happening in minnesota at least is that people are seeing that this long economic ride that we have been on starting in the Obama Administration and continuing on through today, this isnt a trump recovery, this is because of American Workers and american businesses that things are going well, theyre looking at that and also realizing, you know, this isnt for everybody. This isnt happening for everybody in my town or my state, this prosperity isnt shared by everybody. And i think thats the thats where the argument is going to be made and won in the election coming up in the months ahead. So that, because i was going to ask you, what is the democratic message to respond to President Trump, particularly on a day like today, you have job numbers outpacing expectations here. Because in 2018, what worked for democrats in the swing districts, not just attacking trump, but a countermessage, focused on healthcare, focused on jobs, et cetera, flush that out for me. What is the selling point in minnesota . Trump wants to make that a swing state in this election. How do you sell democratic voters to vote out the president . Well, minnesota is a swing state and the president is spending millions of dollars to try to win minnesota so we dont take anything for granted there. I think the message is all about what is happening, just as it was in 2018, the message is all about whats happening in peoples lives. And in minnesota, people just want the freedom and the chance to live the lives they want. So theyre looking at this and saying, you know, President Trump says the economy is doing great, but when i look at my life, what questions do i see . I see my neighbor down the road has his farm just went bankrupt. 20 increases in bankruptcies in minnesota. I see my kid who has got 35,000 in college debt and how are they going to be able to buy a house or buy a car with that kind of with that kind of debt burden . They see growing income inequality, the question that i think minnesotans and people around the country are asking is how can we all share in this prosperity . And thats what we have to be able to answer as democrats. Okay, youre not hearing that right now in the democratic race enough. Wouldnt you agree . Right now you got a lot of sniping going back and forth between sanders and buttigieg and i know youve endorsed klobuchar, but also biden as well. Are you hearing a winning message, i suppose, is the question. Are you hearing a winning message from democrats in the primarys . Well, if youll allow me, i think we are hearing this message from senator klobuchar. I think were hearing a message that is about what do we share in common, how can we move Forward Together . Shes with practical and progressive ideas for how to accomplish that. There is a lot of noise on the democratic primary right now and, i mean, name me a democrat who doesnt wish we could just jump to july or august or december right now. But this is the mess of democracy, democracy takes a lot of work. Democracy is hard work. Yeah. You know, it is interesting, i remind people of this, if you look back to the republican primaries in 2016, there was, you know, a lot of back and forth there. This is not new.
