Ronald reagan, of course, went on to be reelected. Look at jimmy carter at that point, 32 . Hes not near that point, but once he dips into the 30s, thats when all bets are off. But it really comes down to issues. Where is the president on the issues . Look at that on the economy. 50 of americans approve of how the president is handling the economy. Then as you look going all the way down to Race Relations, you can see the numbers get worse. Whats interesting about those issues is the president maintains strong support among republicans, but on those issues, if youre only polling in the 30s, for instance on gun control, that means some republicans as well are not approving of his handling. Absolutely. And thats why the economy it always comes back to the economy as the lynch pin as his strongest issue. When hes soft on the other issues, thats where he loses that republican support. If you look at these numbers when you talk about support with the economy, look where the president is, 50 right now. When you talk to people about how theyre doing right now, how are they doing economically, you have half the country saying the economy is doing well. Now, thats ticked down a little bit to 65 right now from what it was back in may. Those are still pretty strong numbers, though, jim. Its really being fueled by republicans. As you say, nearly nine in ten republicans right now support the way the president is handling the economy. Well, we know the white house is concerned about the economic numbers based on public statements, and the president looking at tax cuts. If it continues to tick down, i suppose thats the key question. We mentioned gun control concerns, Race Relations as well. The president not polling well there. Not too much of a surprise. Hes come under a lot of criticism, as he should, for a lot of the statements hes made. A lot of people think hes giving rise to White Nationalism right now by supporting that. 32 , thats largely fueled by minorities too. We should note that his support amongst latinos and africanamericans is dismal at best right now. And when we look at those numbers, too, where he started to lose support over the past few months when it comes to that issue was among whites. So starting to soften up a little bit on these other issues where republicans might not be able to stomach some of the things the president is saying. Mark peres soreston, always have your wisdom. Thank you very much. Joining me to discuss, Jackie Kucinich and anita kumar. Look at these numbers here. The trend lines and its not just cnn polling thats shown this. Fox news polling showed the president losing to all the top democratic contenders right now, front runners. Is the white house concerned about these numbers . I think they have to be concerned about it, and they have to be concerned, as you just mentioned, about the economy here. That is the thing that his aides, his campaign has really wanted him to base his Reelection Campaign on. There are a lot of republicans that feel like if he based it on the economy, then he could win reelection. If that falters at all, hes in trouble. So really, when you look at some of these polls, the number one thing that americans say theyre supportive of him for is the economy. If you dont have that, a lot of these issues come back. Things with him, you know well talk about him picking fights with other people or countries some of the Foreign Policy moves, some of the rhetoric. So i think all of those things are going to come into play if its still going this way. Jackie, its interesting. I was speaking to a reporter from iowa a few moments ago asking about how iowa voters see this. Of course, the first voting state, first caucus state. What are the democrat candidates message here . The iowa reporter made the point theyre interested to hear what the alternative is there. How are you selling me on you taking over for donald trump in 2020 . Is there a consistent, contiguous message from the democrats on that . You know, i think when youre talking about the economy, what youre hearing from democrats is a lot about the people who have been left behind. Even though the economy is doing well for a lot of people, minorities, women, there are people that have been that arent seeing the benefits. Not to mention, if youre talking about iowa, you hear a lot of Democratic Candidates talking about how the farmers are being impacted by the president s trade war with china. That has been a huge talking point, and frankly, a reality in that state. So not only that, youre hearing theyre bringing in the health care message, how much people are paying for their health care, what happens if obamacare goes away as the president has advocated. So its kind of multifaceted. Is it everyone saying the same thing . No, theyre not. But you can imagine if a recession is impending, if it does come, youre going to hear democrats talk even more about the economy than they are right now. Part of the president s strategy, beyond a transparent play to his base on every issue, including gun control, is try to peel away some voters from typically democratic strongholds, one being among jewish voters. The president taking an attack that struck many jewishamericans as inherently offensive, saying in the oval office, that American Jews who vote for democrats are being disloyal. Anita, help me. We can be overwhelmed by the pure volume of moments like this in this presidency, but whats the significance of this one in particular . Yeah, it was very harsh language, but obviously we see harsh language from him all the time. I think that people really took were struck by how he said that in the oval office. But look, the president is interested in keeping this feud that he has going with these four democratic congresswomen going. This, he feels like, is a great thing for him where hes sort of saying, look, these women who hes accused of not liking israel or being against israel, for him to say these women ay represent the Democratic Party. And from the states that theyre from, this is a very good message for him. As you notice, when this feud has died down, he still brings it up. He talks about israel. He tweets about them. So i think he wants to continue this. Were going to continue to see this rhetoric from him at Campaign Rallies as well. So jackie, im going to ask you a question now, and im not making this up. Its not a parody. The u. S. President canceled, last minute, a visit to u. S. Ally denmark because denmark would not accept his offer to buy a sovereign piece of its country, greenland. Thats a true statement. Yep. Im curious, is there anyone in the president s circle of advisers whos advising him against this . You know, the thing about the president and weve seen this on any range of topics, they initially deny that this was something that was serious. It was something the president had talked about, that maybe they had bantered about, but he wasnt actually going to try to buy greenland. The president came out and said that, yes, in fact, this was something he was considering. So at this point, we just have to listen to what the president is saying. Hes clearly not listening to any advisers that push him one way or another. Hes going to do what he wants. But yes, gjim, there will come day in a couple weeks where ill look at you and say, remember when the president tried to buy greenland . It just sounds so absurd on its face. But it has genuine effect on important u. S. Alliances, as thee comments and positions do. Denmark is a nato ally. Denmark sent hundreds of troops to afghanistan, lost 43 of them. They did very dangerous duty there. I was there, i saw them. They took on dangerous operations. There are real consequences to this, are there not . There is. Were all sort of smiling and kind of laughing and scratching our head about it. The reporting out of the country, out of denmark today is that they consider this, as they should, a complete snub. This was a state visit that had been planned. Remember, this is only going to be you know, theyve been preparing for this. His visit was coming in just a couple weeks. So they dont theyre baffled. They thought it was a joke. They didnt understand what was going on. This is really going to hurt relations not only with that country but with other countries that are sort of looking at this and wondering sort of whats going on. Are things this tenuous, this fragile that he can have this idea and just by tweet cancel a visit . So i mean, i do think theres going to be repercussions. People are going to be talking about this. Other foreign leaders will be talking about this. Lets see whos the first to offer to buy hawaii. Jackie, anita, thanks to both of you. The Trump Administration has Just Announced a new rule to increase the amount of time it can hold migrant families, including children, in detention. Right now Migrant Children cannot be held in federal custody longer than 20 days. The Administration Says the old rule, also known as the flores settlement agreement, forced officials to either release immigrant families altogether or separate them and keep just the adults in detention. Joining us now, cnn National Correspondent alex marquardt. Alex, thats the administration claim here. What are the facts . Well, jim, the bottom line here is that this new rule will allow the Trump Administration to hold migrant families for much longer, perhaps indefinitely. There are two core provisions here, that families are kept together during immigration proceedings and that the standards of care for children is much higher. The acting secretary of Homeland Security rattled off a long list of improvements on the way that children would be held under this new rule. But jim, the fact of the matter is that this administration will now be allowed, if this rule goes into effect, and thats a big if, hold families for a longer period of time. This is in response, of course, to this record surge of migrant families arriving at the border. As you noted, under current conditions, under the flores settlement agreement, the administration is not allowed to hold children for longer than 20 days. And what the administration is saying, what mcaleenan said moments ago, is this provides an incentive for families to come. They know after 20 days, the children will have to be released with their families into the United States. So this new rule, mcaleenan says, will end what he called a catchandrelease program. It will stop migrant families from using their children as what he called passports or pawns. As i mentioned, this is far from a done deal. This rule was announced this morning. It will be published on wednesday. They are fully expecting opposition in court. If all goes well for them, it will go into effect in 60 days. But jim, you can be absolutely certain there will be some opposition to this new rule. And that comment was r revelatory, was it not. In other words, these are meant to be a deterrent. Its a fact. Alex marquardt, very good to have you on the story. Still to come, fierce backlash against President Trumps latest comments claiming this jewish people, jewishamericans, are disloyal if they support democrats. Well get a response from the ceo of the Antidefamation League ahead. Plus, sources say the president is telling the nra that background checks are now off the table. This morning, President Trump under fire for offensive comments questioning the loyalty of jewish people. The controversy surrounds President Trumps claim that jewish people are disloyal if they support the Democratic Party. Have a listen. Wheres the Democratic Party gone . Where have they gone, where theyre defending these two people over the state of israel . And i think any jewish people that vote for a democrat, i think it shows either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty. 2020 democratic candidate and front runner joe biden slammed President Trumps comments, tweeting, mr. President , these comments are insulting and inexcusable, just like your previous dual loyalty insinuations. Stop dividing americans and disparaging your fellow citizens. It may not be beneath you, but it is beneath the office you hold. Im joined now by jonathan greenblat, ceo and National Director for the Antidefamation League. We appreciate you taking the time this morning. Thank you for having me. I want to quote from something you tweeted after the president made these comments. Its unclear who the president of the United States is claiming jews would be disloyal to, but charges of disloyalty have long been used to attack jews. As weve said before, its possible to engage in the democratic process without these claims. Its long overdue to stop using jews as a political football. Explain what you mean by that. Well, as i tweeted, while its a bit unclear what the president was trying to say in terms of who jews are disloyal to, are we disloyal to him or the Republican Party or to america . While he wasnt exactly clear about that, i will be exactly clear on what that was, antisemitism. The charge of disloyalty or dual loyalty has been used against jews for thousands of years. In europe it was used for 1500 years to say that jews were not sufficiently loyal to the church or the crown. So they justified persecuting, marginal idesin marginalizing, and murdering jews in the countries where they lived. Until the last hundred years in the middle east, they would say jews were more loyal to zraisra than the countries where they lived and use that as justification to persecute, marginalize and murder these people where they lived. Today in this country when were seeing a rise of white supremacy, when were seeing a rash of antisemitic attacks look, its almost two years to the day of the charlottesville march. Were getting on the Year Anniversary of the pittsburgh massacre, the most violent antisemitic act in american history. It is bewildering we even have to have this conversation and that these words are coming out of the oval office. You know, the president has used that antisemitic attack against these congresswomen in particular, but you also hear other Administration Officials and republican lawmakers using that term while at the same time the president has been reluctant at times to call out White Supremacists in this country who are explicitly and by definition antisemitic. I wonder your reaction to that contradiction. It is extraordinary and almost inexplicable that our commander in chief would use his twitter feed to go after hollywood celebrities and other random individuals but cant seem to call out the racist, xenophobic, antisee mettic, White Supremacist Movement that is indeed growing. White nationalism is a global terror threat, and we need our commander in chief to call it out. I will tell you this, jim. Ive said this before. It is long past due for politicians to stop tokenizing jews. We are not political props to be used for partisan gain, whether by the president or members of his cabinet, or ill be honest with you, members of congress shouldnt talk to us about where we have our allegiances. Were americans, first and foremost. And we need to be recognized for that and treated like everybody else. Thats a strong statement. This morning the president went a step further. You may have seen this. He tweeted a thank you to a conservative radio host who said that israeli jews think trump is like a Second Coming of god. Thats a direct quote from the president of the United States twitter account. Some 50 million followers. Your reaction . It is truly breathtaking. First and foremost, i guess we shouldnt be surprised that the president is quoting a conspiracy theorist because hes done that many times before. But the idea that the white house is using that kind of person, you know, its extraordinary. But i will say that it is the height of hypocrisy to use christian theology to bully jews and to push out some messianic complex. Literally, its hard to think of something less kosher than telling the jewish people youre the king of israel, and therefore we should have some fidelity to you for that reason. I dont know if hes read the bible, but in the old testament, thats not what we believe. Listen, i feel the strength of your views, jonathan. I appreciate you taking the time to come on the program. Thank you. Well, just over two weeks ago, 31 people were killed in two Mass Shootings in america. Whats changed, and where are our gun laws headed next . Were going to discuss coming up. A little more than two weeks ago, 31 people were killed in two Mass Shootings in the span of fewer than 13 hours. At the time, we asked the question, as i imagine many of you did as well, will this time be different . What will change following the latest in what has become a uniquely american problem, mass murders with highpowered weapons . In the days after those shootings, the president signalled an openness, at least, to change, specifically the possibility of universal background checks for gun purchases. We need intelligent background checks, okay. This isnt a question of nra, republican, or democrat. I think we have now a chance to do something really much more meaningful. That expression of support lasted about ten days. Just yesterday, crucially, after speaking with the nra president , wayne lapierre, trump backed away from support for expanded background checks, echoing nra talking points as he did. We have very, very strong background checks. A lot of the people that put me where i am are strong believers in the second amendment, and i am also. And we have to be very careful about that. You know, they call it the slippery slope. All of a sudden, everything gets taken away. Were not going to let that happen. Well, now the atlantic is reporting that President Trump has told the head of the nra just yesterday afternoon that universal background checks are now off the table. Surprised . You shouldnt be because weve seen this before. Just like last year after parkland where 17 students and staff were shot and killed at Marjory Stoneman douglas high school, heres the president just nine days after that shooting. We certainly have to strengthen background checks. Everybody agrees with that. And were going to make background checks very, very strong. Very, very strong, he said. But just three days after that dont worry about the nra. Theyre on our side. You guys, half of you are so afraid of the nra. Theres nothing to be afraid of. Two weeks later, the New York Times put it bluntly. Conceding to nra, trump abandons brief gun control promise. Yesterday, i asked gop congressman tom reed why any american would need a 100round barrel magazine, like the one the dayton shooter used. Heres his answer. A hundredround magazine. You look there, whats called a barr barrel magazine. Should that be legal . I dont believe banning objects is going to be the solution to this issue. Why should that who needs a hundredround magazine . Where are you going to draw the line . Does that make you feel better if we pass a law saying were going to ban objects why dont we ban cars. Lets get them off the streets because theyre killing people. Ive never seen a barrel magazine like that in the hands of a u. S. Soldier. Should it be legal . Simple yes, yes or no. I dont support that ban. Thats an attack against so it should be legal. So once again, was this time different . Answer seems to be pretty clear, no. Lets discuss all this with john kasich, former republican governor of ohio, as well as cnn seen your political commentator. Weve talked about this a lot. In fact, we were standing outside the murder scene in dayton, ohio, just a couple weeks back talking about that mass murder. Why do we appear to be in the same place weve been after so many tragedies like this . Jim, this is the ugliest side of politics. So in other words, im not going to do this because i might lose part of my base, and im afraid of that and might not win election. This is not just related to donald trump. This relates to a lot of people in the United States congress. So therefore, because ive got some people out here who were screaming and yelling, saying theyre going to go and defeat me. I just need to back off. By the way, for that congressman, maybe you should have asked him, well, should people have machine guns . You know, they banned bump stocks. That conversation with him was absurd, okay. That is its ridiculous. Its like we can do nothing unless we do everything. So this is the ugliest side of politics. Obviously they were telling the president that if you go for any of this stuff, youre going to lose your base and lose election. People can check my record. Youre in office to do the right thing. And the poil ticks will ta politics will take care of itself. This is very sickening to me. Secondly, though, i think there still is an opportunity in the states to get something done. By the way, i see in the senate theyre talking about some sort of grants for red flag laws. Well, that would be progress. That would be significant progress. But its not enough. But look, lets take whatever step we can and let the states begin. Here in ohio, i certainly hope here in ohio theyre going to pass some things. Its amazing. To your credit as governor of ohio, republican governor, you pursued measures, gun violence protection orders known as red flag laws, Domestic Violence regulations so folks dont use weapons like that at home, background checks as well. What did you learn from that experience in terms of getting measures like this through . Well, as the casualties pile up, ive always felt that look, i was at a dinner the other night. There were four women around the table with their husbands. The women all said one thing. Why do we need to have all these guns . Nobody is coming to take everybodys guns away. We are for second amendment. Frankly, gun owners support reasonable restrictions. They do. But those people who were loud, who live in the district, are the ones that keep yelling at these members and the members wilt. Theyre unwilling to say, oh, come on now, nobodys going to come grab your gun. But there are some reasonable things we can do. At the end of the day, its up to the voters. If the voters are going to speak on this, the politicians will run. I saw joni ernst in iowa. A lot of people were holding up signs. When she sees that, it puts the fear of god in her. When the public demands changes, it will come. And it ultimately will come. But you look at the polling. More than 90 of americans support universal background checks. Majority of nra members support it. Hasnt the public spoken . Because, jim, change comes over time. This is the thing thats hard for people to understand. Change comes from the bottom up. The people who are for reasonable gun control laws have many things theyre concerned about. Gun owners are concerned about basically one thing, dont touch my gun and dont change the laws. So its a matter of who has the most intensity when it comes to politicians. When the public says, yeah, id like to have that, but theyre not demanding it from people and yet the gun owner is saying, dont you do anything, guess who wins . Its all about intensity. Over time, it will grow. Just like we see the Environmental Movement starting to grow, it took look how long it took to have women suffrage in this country. Nobody wanted to do it, and they fought for it for decades. Unfortunately, or fortunately, thats how change happens. You could make a comparison to civil rights legislation in the 60s as well. You got it. Governor john kasich, always good to have you on the show. Thanks, jim. Overseas, the crisis in venezuela entering a new and dangerous period. We saw them in the airport, the International Airport there, which has an enormous amount of volume running through it, essentially blocking the main terminal there. They have set up a barricade blocking access to that station. You can see the protesters are wearing hard hats, gas masks. Theyre carrying umbrellas, which has become an iconic symbol of the ongoing prodemocracy movement there. Theyve set up a barricade there with waste bins. Theyre also carrying fire extinguishers, which appears to be a way to respond to if police use, as they have in the past, tear gas against the protesters. This follows 11 straight weeks in hong kong of prodemocracy protests, many of which have attracted hundreds of thousands of people, to peaceful protests in the streets. At other times, there have been clashes between portions of the protesters and police, who have useder used tear gas, batons. These are live pictures from hong kong, where it is late in the evening. We have cnn correspondent will ripley, whos in hong kong now. Hes on the phone. Will, what do we know about these protests and whats planned . Well, what were seeing here began as a peaceful sitin at the station, which was the scene of that attack involving suspected gang members. This is the anniversary that was being marked, the onemonth anniversary. Yet, now what has happened, as weve often seen in this cycle of this summer of discontent, when things seem like theyre slowing down the most recent flash point was at the Hong Kong National airport. They resolved that situation. Now we have protesters barricading themselves inside this station. As you can see, they are prepared for a standoff. They are wearing helmets, goggles and masks, as if theyre getting ready for the potential for pepper spray or tear gas or any sort of deployment. Some of them have what appears to be body armor to defend against nonlethal ammunition that Hong Kong Police have used as of late. And you have Police Officers saying that theyre going to intervene, using as minimal force as necessary. You have protesters that we can see here who appear to be prepared to use much more than minimal force. So you have the potential here for a flash point, the potential for interaction between Hong Kong Police and protesters that could devolve into something we dont know at this stage. We should be clear that by and large, the protests over these many weeks in hong kong have been largely peaceful. Marches through the streets often shutting down parts of central hong kong. Theres been a Smaller Group of protest who are have taken more aggressive action, including invading the Legislative Council building there. Events like this one. Will ripley, my colleague, referenced a clash a month ago between protesters and members of hong kong gangs who attacked them more violently. The suspicion among the protesters is somehow those gangs were being used by the government to exact punishment on the protesters. Not confirmed. But police, as well, have used quite amount of force. Batons, tear gas, et cetera. You can see the protesters there prepared for just such an encounter. The helmets, the goggles, the gas masks. And as i mentioned earlier, fire extinguishers, which they may use or at least threttaten to u against police as they come. I want to show on air a tweet from joshua wong, whos a Young Hong Kong resident. Let me quote from it. Hes been a leader of these prodemocracy movements for a number of years now. He sent out a tweet earlier today that we will join hands tomorrow in the name of freedom, democracy, and for a Better Future for hong kong. Will you be there . So tomorrow, and keep in mind its already late at night in hong kong local time, Late Wednesday evening. Tomorrow they have plans for larger protests. Whether this is connected to that, its not clear. As will ripley said, this marking one month since a violent clash between hong kong begans and the protesters there. Will ripley, youve been covering this for some time. The background here are laws proposed by china, particularly an extradition law that hong kong residents see as putting hong kong, which has its own laws, own representatives, under chinas more authoritarian system here. The hong kong leader backed off instituting that law. But to be clear, will, china maintains a great deal of control in hong kong. Theres someone who was extradited recently and questions being asked. Yes, certainly mainland used to exert influence here in hong kong. Weve seen that intensify in one of the most important sectors of life here, which is the Financial Sector fairly recently. Am i still on the line now . You are, will. We can hear you. Okay, the line was ringing on my end. So as i was saying, there have been some incidents recently involving beijing influence on the Financial Sector. For example, cafe pacific, they had employees participate in a demonstration. Then Mainland China said any crew who participated in illegal protests in hong kong would not be able to fly over chinese air space or in and out of Mainland China, which would cut into like 50 of their business. So what did the airline do . They fired a couple pilots, warned employees not to participate in these kinds of political events. Their ceo resigned. So youre seeing a Company Operating in a free economy like hong kong under the influence of beijing. There are going to be other examples like that as well as the mainland obviously continues to not encourage this type of activity. For example, alibaba, they were going to do a 15 billion listing here in hong kong, which they have postponed as a result of the political unrest. Thats reporting by reuters. For viewers who may not know the background, hong kong was handed back to china in 1997. It had been a british colony for more than a century. As part of that agreement, hong kong maintained its own laws, representatives, a policy known as one country, two systems. As were watching, you can see protesters pulling down a metal barrier there and firing those fire extinguishers towards police. Again, this is taking place live. These are live pictures inside a hong kong subway station. It is late in the evening there, just about 11 00 p. M. , as you can see. These are protesters protesting that there was no prosecution of gang members who attacked protesters violently a month ago. Thats what theyre protesting here. The Bigger Picture here are hong kong residents coming out in force, sometimes by the hundreds of thousands, to support more democracy, the rule of law in their country that they feel china is exercising more control over them. Cnn is going to continue to watch this tense situation on the ground there. Hong kong protesters putting up a barricade, blocking access to a subway station there. Part of 11 weeks now, every weekend. Big public protests there. Cnn will stay on top of it. Much more on the breaking news out of hong kong right after this quick break.
