Decade ago. It saved epstein years in prison despite the fbi identifying dozens of underage girls who say they were sexually abused by epstein. On monday, federal prosecutors unsealed two new sex trafficking charges against epstein. He has pleaded not guilty in court. Listen to the reaction from one of the women who says that she also was sexually abused by him. Just to hear that theyre standing up for the victims, you know what i mean, its just like so overwhelmingly un its past due. Tears obviously that she has from what she endured. Lauren fox is with me on capitol hill. How loud are the calls growing for acosta to resign, and particularly are they across party lines . Well, no. For democrats, this is a time where they are calling for labor secretary acosta to step aside. You saw nancy pelosi tweeting last night, quote, secretary acosta must step down. As u. S. Attorney he engaged in an agreement with Jeffrey Epstein and kept it secret from courageous young victims, preventing them from seeking justice. This was known when he was appointed to the cabinet. We expect Chuck Schumer to also call for acosta to resign. I will tell you the white house, republicans are argue thag this is just another attack on the Trump Administration and his cabinet. Heres what Kellyanne Conway said earlier. Its classic for the Democratic Party to not focus on the perpetrator at hand and focus on a member of the Trump Administration. Theyre so obsessed with this president that they immediately go to Alexander Acosta rather than Jeffrey Epstein. And i will tell you i went yesterday to lamar alexander, who is the chairman of the committee that confirmed acosta for the job at the labor department. He told me that he thought there was no need for acosta to step aside. He said the issues about the settlement more than a decade ago were already litigated in his committee during the confirmation hearing. Thats what were heerg from a lot of other republicans if theyve seen the latest reports at all. Poppy. Except for the fact that julie brown came out after the confirmation hearings, so a lot of it wasnt publicly known then. Thanks very much. Lets talk about the politics. Julie davis is with me. Former state and federal prosecutor. On the legal case, you say epstein has three Legal Options and theyre all bad. Hes in a world of trouble. Number one, hell go to trial. Odds are hes going to get convicted. They appear to have a very strong case against him. If he goes to trial and looses, hell never get out of prison. With kwob brarts. Yes. Option two, he can plead guilty without cooperation but i dont think the Southern District is going to give him anything near what he got in florida. And option number three is cooperate. Now, usually cooperation leads to the lowest sentence for defendants. He would have to give everybody up. Its not pick and choose in the Southern District. And im not sure the Southern District wants to cooperate him. If he were to give people up, remember there were four unindicted coconspirators in this who in the last deal was agreed that they would never face federal prosecution for this. So if he even cooperated and gave up those names, because its on the Public Corruption Division in new york that is handling this, could those people be charged given the previous deal . Yes. They can still be charged. First of all, the whole deal that acosta made where he immunized people around epstein is completely unprecedented. Ive never heard of that idea. There is no such thing as immunizing co con spoir tors and its not blinding on the Southern District of new york, so they should not rest easy. Julie, let me talk to you about the politics. As you just heard from lauren fox, these are not bipartisan. Its schumer and its pelosi and not republicans. Is that politically risky for republicans here when youre talking about dozens of underaged young girls who say that they were sexually abused for years . Well, listen, i think this is going to become a pretty untenable position for them, but its not clear that that is going to move them off of their position. Their line on this is that, yes, Jeffrey Epstein may be a despicable human being, he may have done horrible things, but the labor secretary wasnt responsible for those things and this was a plea deal that he made when he was in a different job. It was known and he was confirmed anyway. And i think were going to see them pretty much stick to that position. It may become a very unappealing one for them to some degree. But we have seen them stand behind the president when it comes to issues of personnel. I think the bigger issue is whether the president is going to continue to stick behind secretary acosta. He clearly is now. You heard Kellyanne Conway earlier. But at the point that this becomes a distraction and President Trump, if he begins to feel that this is taking away from him and his administration and his ability to do things and make his points, we may see him take a turn and then republicans may follow. So what about democrats . Because it was nine total, you know, senators, eight Democratic Senators who voted to confirm him back in 2017, julie, and six of them are still in the senate, including West Virginia senator joe manchin. And heres what he just told politico, if he made a mistake or a judgment call or Something Like that, does that affect the way hes going his job now . Im going to basically judge him on what hes doing and how hes doing it. Again, for someone whose job it is to oversee any human trafficking. I do think that we are going to see acceleration among democrats of the calls for acosta to resign. I dont know if theyre going to if joe manchin is going to change his mind. He was one of the less controversial of President Trumps nominees back to 2017 when he was confirmed. There were only a handful that got bipartisan support and he was obviously one of them. But as you pointed out earlier, this was before julie browns great reporting and all of this was known before these new charges, and the really atrocious details that are coming forward about what mr. Epstein is alleged to have done. All of which we have to assume at least part of which secretary acosta knew at the time when he was working out this plea deal. So i think for democrats, particularly with both of their leaders in the house and the senate calling for him to step down, were going to hear that spread a little bit more broadly and its going to be i think its going to end up being a pretty unified front on their side. We dont know, though, whether that will influence the white house and what secretary acosta will do. Thats true. Thank you very much. We appreciate it very much. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says the house could vote this week to told the attorney general bill barr and commerce secretary wilbur ross in criminal contempt. This comes after bar and ross refused to turn over the documents related to the administrations push to at a Citizenship Question to the 2020 census and this is all happening as attorney general barr says President Trump plans to continue that fight. One option on the table is an executive order. Our justice correspondent joins me live from washington. It sounds like were going to hear from bar essentially a completely new legal argument from the administration as to the why factor here. And it could happen within the next day or two. Weve learned that the president is now considering either an executive order or a president ial memorandum directing that the Citizenship Question be included on the 2020 census. Of course the president has been pushing this despite the supreme courts ruling that the administrations initial rationale was as they put it, contrived. But the president believes this ongoing fight will only strengthen his support among conservatives and the attorney general says he has been in constant discussions with the president and is confident that there is a path to getting the Citizenship Question on the census and that the plan forward will be announced in the next day or two. Really that doesnt factor in the reality here that the census has already gone to print without the question and the legal fights are still going strong. And then youve got something playing out on capitol hill. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is saying that this is all part of an effort by the administration to shut out Diverse Voices across the country. She said yesterday its part of the administrations plan to make America White again. And now Speaker Pelosi is even sending a warning that she could schedule a full house vote soon to hold commerce secretary wilbur ross and ag barr in criminal contempt. So this is all playing out on multiple front. The administration promising that the question will appear, but those fights are playing out in court and now, of course, on capitol hill. Poppy. Jessica schneider, thank you for the update. Appreciate it as always. This just in, the democraticled House Judiciary Committee ratcheting up the fight. They are making it clear they are on two different issues. One, on immigration, the committee is going to move on get information regarding the president s policies about zero tolerance policy at the border that resulted in the child separation, the policy for migrant families and theyre going to demand records and testimony from current and former administration officials. But also the committee is moving to author size subpoenas for 12 different individuals as part of its investigation into potential obstruction of justice. Now, on that obstruction probe, that includes people like the president s soninlaw, Jared Kushner is going to be soon hit with a subpoena. Also, the president s former chief of staff, john kelly, as well as his former campaign manager, corey lewandowski, rob porter, michael flynn, the former National Security adviser who pleaded guilty to his conversations with the russians and lying to the fbi about those conversations. Those individuals will be jerry nadler will have the power to serve those individuals with a subpoena after the Committee Votes on thursday to move forward. But also, poppy, interesting people on this list including david pecker. He was the head of an ami, the Parent Company of the National Enquirer and the questions that the democrats have is hisnge and involvement in the huj money scandal to keep silent the Trump Affairs that were about to come out. They have been trying to dig into the issue. Theyve sent letters to individuals like mr. Pecker. Theyve gotten resistance so theyre moving to compel production of documents and testimony. But like all of these matters, the question is will they get cooperation. Theyve seen time and again resistance from the administration, which is why were seeing a likely fight in the courts on all of these matters. Now well see even more people potentially being fought in court so the democrats can ultimately get compliance. But a ratcheting up of the fight between the democrats and the white house over the investigations. It certainly is. Thank you so much for the reporting. Theyre also opening up about their son hunters battle with addiction. Watch this. Hunter came out in a Magazine Article talking about his struggle with Mental Health. I say bravo for him. And ill tell you what, hearing how the campaigns, what does it mean, points to a stigma. Nobody would have ever said that if hunter came out and said he had leukemia. Mental illness, Mental Health issue, what does it mean . What has hunters health meant to you and what do you want it to mean in terms of what you put into the campaign . Well, weve seen the struggle. Weve seen the struggle and we know that most American Families are dealing with some sort of struggle like we are. And i think they can relate to us as you know, as parents who are hopeful and are supportive of our son and we will continue to be supportive. And i think that makes us more empathetic about helping other americans. Hes going to beat this. This kid, im telling you, as you know, beau is my soul. Hunter is my hareart. Hes been through some tough times, but hes fighting. Hes the most honorable decent person i know. I read the article and all i could do is think my god, he gives me so much more credit than i deserve as a dad. It took enormous courage. I knew nothing about that article, except he told me toward the end he was having this long interview. Everybody has to deal with these issues in a way that is consistent with who they are and what they are. This guy is the most generous, honorable man that i know. And i am confident, confident hes going to make it. And look, the idea that we treat Mental Health and, quote, physical health as somehow theyre distinct, its health. Its health. We have to put more money into Mental Health, whether its for our education system, whether its for our veterans, whoever its for. We have to start to look at it, talk about it and put more money into it. Talking about it is huge. Thats why i bring up hunter. Youve been hearing your son. You got in this race, you knew everything they could find about hunter was going to come back and be revisited on you. Sure. Business, well see what they do with him having a Mental Health struggle, but discussing it as something that you can beat, something you can treat. Already, thats a different dialogue than were used to hearing. Curing cancer would mean so much across many levels. Getting people to accept that Mental Wellness is the same at any other maladdy could be huge as well. And by the way, it is doable. The idea that somehow think of all the people out there, chris. One of the things we should be debating in this campaign is health care, whether or not we have the adequate, and whats the best way to get health care. What barack did, and i helped, the Affordable Care act. It was a fundamental break through is how we thought about how things should work. So i just think the party now wants to get rid of the aca. Medicare cannot exist with the aca. And thats why im opposed to any republican that wants to dismantle it or any democratic. The idea that youre going to come along and dismantle this makes no sense to me. Four of the top five people on your polls are on the complete opposite side of you. I understand that. And thats worth debating about. I believe theyre totally sincere. But look, starting over i think would be a sin. They say youre either all in or its half measures that dont work. Let me tell you something, i noticed the measures in the Affordable Care act work pretty well, it gave 20 Million People health care, 100 million that had preexisting conditions. And you notice none of them are saying that, but they are saying if you want to satisfy with your employerbased health care, youve got to give it up. Look, we provide a medicare option. Thats exactly what barack and i talked about in the beginning. You couldnt get it through, though. No. We couldnt. But now things are changing. Guess whats happening . You know, the thing barack and i would talk about and god love him, he never took credit that he should have, because it was like everything was dropping on his desk. I said we ought to make the case that people know what you did. It wasnt until they started to take it away they even realized it was a consequence of what barack had done. So now, if you notice in 18, we went out in all those campaigns, you find republicans, i want to get rid of preexisting conditions covered. So its a different place. And the public has been educated in a way that i believe theyve embraced it and im ready to take that on. One more question for you, if you dont mind. Youre much more interesting. That i agree with. You mentioned senator harris, the debate. Ill talk to the vp about that as well. But when you were listening to things, well, here are the things were going to have to fight against in this, here we are, they may not think you have this and this. You did not imagine, i think ill ask it differently. Did you imagine that one of the things you would have to deal with early on is whether or not your husbands past is basically bigoted . As soon as that comes out, the crime bill, working with people who were seen to be obviously extreme thinkers and bigots themselves, busing. Did you anticipate those and does it make you feel differently about where this could be headed . You know, i think that they were looking at the past. The one thing you cannot say about joe is that hes a racist. I mean, he got into politics because of his commitment to civil rights. And then to be elected with barack obama and then someone is saying, you know, youre a racist . As soon as i heard those word or they say youre not a racist, but this all stinks. As soon as i heard those words, i thought whats coming next . And i think the American People know joe biden. They know his values, they know what he stands for. And they didnt buy it. You dont think because you took a hit in the polls and some of that the polls are coming back up. The polls are coming back up. We just saw that today and i think the more people get to know joe, the higher the polls will get. I want to thank you for your time. Thank you. Its a fascinating interview. Health Care Coverage for millions of you on the line today, a panel of federal judges hearing oral arguments today in a lawsuit filed by a group of republican states and backed by the Trump Administration that could gut the Affordable Care act. At stake, insurance for 20 million americans, protection for people with preexisting conditions, subsidies for low income people and much more. Outside of the courthouse in new lens, this is a really big deal. It really is, poppy. This is the third major challenge to the Affordable Care act that president obama signed in 2010. And whats different this time is exactly what you said, millions of americans are now covered by its protections. Texas and several other republicancontrolled states have challenged the law saying that in 2017, when congress zeroed out a tax penalty for people who were not obtaining health insurance, it invalidated the individual insurance requirement and the entire law. And now, poppy, the Trump Justice Department is echoing that, saying the entire law should be declared unconstitutional. So defending it are california and other democraticled states, and the now democraticcontrolled u. S. House. Theyre coming into court today to say that whatever congress did in 2017, it didnt jeopardize the individual insurance requirement and it certainly didnt do the entire law. The case will be heard this afternoon by three appellate judges, two republicans, one democrat, and no matter what happens, this is going to play into the 2020 election campaign. And poppy, it will likely be destined for the u. S. Supreme court. Okay. Thank you very much. Stay on it. Serial sex trafficker of children, acosta chose to let him off easy. This is not acceptable. We cannot have as one of the leading appointed officials in america someone who has done this, plain and simple. Second, i am calling on the department of justices office of professional responsibility to make public the results of its view of acostas handling of the epstein case. Senators murray and cain have called for these findings, but the Justice Department so far has stonewalled, has refused to make them public. This review cannot be kept in the dark, particularly given the new revelations, and there should be hearings. And third, the president needs to answer for his statements he has made about his relationship with mr. Epstein. In 2002, he said he had known epstein for 15 years and he was, quote, a terrific guy who enjoyed women, quote, on the younger side, unquote. Epstein was also reportedly a regular at the maralago for years. President trump appointed mr. Acosta to such a powerful position. Now on health care, today oral arguments begin in the texas versus United States and the fate of our Health Care System hangs in the balance due to this nasty, cruel lawsuit led by President Trumps department of justice. If the court we do have sad news to share with you. We have just learned that selfmade billionaire, philanthropist, former president ial candidate ross perot has died. He was 89 years old. You will know him for his two runs for the prez dense in 1992 and 1996. Wolf blitzer has a look back as his remarkable life. Ross perot was already a mega successful businessman when he came on as a president ial candidate in 1992. His folksy manner the situation got so bad, i decided i need to get into it. And his laser like focus on the economy. We have got to stop sending jobs overseas. Made perot one of the most successful president ial candidates in u. S. History. He won almost 19 of the vote in 1992. From the beginning, perots campaign struck a cord with those seeking a thirdparty candidate. He threw his hat into the ring on Cnns Larry King live. I will not run as a democratic or republican because i will not sell out to anybody, but to the American People. And i will sell out to them. In a president ial debate, he attacked both republican president george bush and challenger bill clinton with equal viger with the nations debt. Its not the republicans fault and not the democrats fault and what im looking for is who did it. Perot also challenged the support of nafta. Perot feared it would cause a lost of american jobs perots campaign against nafta continued beyond the residential race. The Clinton White house responded with a challenge, a oneonone debate with viet al gore live on cnn with larry king as moderator. Im listening. I havent heard the answer. Thats because you havent quit talking. Im listening. How do you stop it without nafta . Are you going to listen . Work on it. It was watched by millions of viewers. Just over a week later, nafta passed both the house and senate. It took effect on january 1st, 1994. Ross perot was born in 1930 in texas where his father ran a cotton mill. He graduated from the Navel Academy in 1953 and spent four years at sea. He started Electronic Data Systems in the early 1960s. It later became aun of the Worlds Largest Technology Service companies processing data. Perot became a billionaire in 1994 when he sold to General Motors for 2. 5 million. A couple of years later he started a second Data Processing company, Perot Systems corporation. It sold to dell in 2009 for almost 4 billion. In 1969, president Richard Nixon asked perot to seek better treatment for u. S. Prisoners of war in north vietnam. He traveled where he mess with ambassadors from russia and north vietnam. Perot made headlines again in 1979 when two eds employees were taken hostage during the revolution in iran, he organized and paid for a successful private mission to rescue the men and bring them home. Perot ran for president again in 1996, but this time he was barred from the debates, so he bought network air time and broadcast a series to express his vision for america. Perot won only 8 of the vote in 1996. Wolf blitzer, cnn washington. Jamie joins us now on the phone. And of course our thoughts with his wife margo. He is survived by her and their five children. You covered him for years. Tell me what he was like. I think that ross perot, poppy, was perhaps the original maverick. We used that term a lot. From his voice to his style. Very plain spoken. Before donald trump captured the american public, certainly ross perot did as an independent. He also didnt listen to the people around him. And by that i mean, the political advisers. When i covered his campaign, they would say, you know, do this or dont do that to him, dont do interviews, and he really ran his own ship. But i think from my years covering him, the things that stood out to me was his role as an independent candidate when he got in the race with george h. W. Bush and bill clinton. Because as wolf just reported, perot got almost 19 of the vote. And if you look back at those numbers, i know the Bush Campaign really felt that perot was a spoiler for the republican candidate and there were several reasons that george h. W. Bush lost that reelection. But a lot of it they blamed on ross perot, poppy. They did indeed. What do we not know . What do most people, jamie, not know about ross perot that you think they should know as we remember him today . You know, i dont think we should forget, at the time he ran i think he was very much in the public consciousness and people knew that he was really a selfmade man. He grew up in texas, he went into the navy, became the salesman for ibm, and very quickly became a top employee. Not a surprise. He was a good salesman, as we then saw in his political career. And then after he left ibm, he started Electronic Data Systems in dallas. And once again, he just soared to the top. I think the other thing that wolf mentioned this, but its very important to remember, he was a driving force behind the mia movement in vietnam. He really pushed very hard and spent a lot of time, effort and money, on trying to bring mias back and resolve that. Sure. Jamie, thank you so much for this. I mean, you had years covering him and i really appreciate you calling in. Ill just leave everyone with this. His son, ross perot, jr. , asked to describe his father, said obviously a great family man, a wonderful father, but at the end of the day, he was a wolf humanitarian. Again, our thoughts with his family. Well be right back. Uhoh, looks like someones still nervous about buying a new house. Is it that obvious . Yes it is. How are you, poppy . Im wg. Thank you. So youre going to, as you call it, trumps back yard. Youre in New Hampshire and youre taking it to the voters that flipped from voting for obama to voting for President Trump. Talk to me about why you think that is the best strategy to win in a democratic primary. Because i think as ive talked to voters across america, they want someone who will beat trump and they know that the problems are more than just President Trump, that in fact theres real issues underlying the economy and our government that need to be addressed. So im going to President Trumps back yard to show the American People how many promises hes actually broken. He promised to lower Prescription Drug prices and failed. He promised to end bad trade deals and bring back manufacturing jobs and failed. He promised to End Gun Violence and hes failed. And so im going to talk about my vision for the country to actually get things done. Lets talk about some of the issues, immigration, womens rights. Lets start with immigration. As a member of congress you have a long record on immigration. You opposed amnesty for undocumented immigrants, you voted to increase funding for ice, you called securing the southern border a National Security priority. At one point you posted that english should be the official language of the United States. And i know that youve backed away from all of those positions. So much so that you raised your hand in the last debate when asked if crossing the border as an undocumented migrant should no longer be illegal. Its a dramatic reversal. Why such a change of heart . Ive answered this question about a dozen times, including on your network. Ten years ago i became senator for the entire state of new york. And i not only had the humility to recognize my positions were wrong, but i had the courage to lead from a new position and ive been leading on those issues for over a decade. Ive led on comprehensive Immigration Reform with a pathway to citizenship. I have a comprehensive approach about how to treat Asylum Seekers at the border in a far more humane we. We have a president who under his leadership, children have died in his custody. I guess im getting at the why, senator. And let me ask you, for example, the former dhs secretary, he said, quote, who aspire to Public Office should not espouse Campaign Promises that have no process expect for success. This is a disservice to our kmok and assumes voters are fools. Hes talking about decriminalizing crossing the border as an undocumented migrant. Who was it that changed you so dramatically on this issue . Poppy, we need a president who has the humility to recognize when theyre wrong, has the wisdom to listen to their constituents, learn from them and change their positions. Thats who i am. And i have the courage to actually lead from a better position and have been doing so for over a decade. This isnt a new campaign perspective. This is something ive been fighting for as a u. S. Senator for ten years. And winning. The thing that i do is i bring people together to get things done and to make a difference. I do not think we should criminalize children and parents coming across the border who are seeking asylum. They need our help. Our country is stronger because of immigration. It is not weaker. And we need to have not only comprehensive Immigration Reform, but we also need a humane asylum system, and i have a plan to have a communitybased system so these families can come across, they can be given lawyers, have real Immigration Judges and actually have a communitybased system. I disagree with what President Trump has been doing and i believe we need leadership. And leaders who can have a vision for how to get this done. So to your argument about saying im on this road trip, on this bus trip because i think im the one who can beat President Trump on this, you have never lost an election in your 13year political career. But when you look at the polling right now, youre polling somewhere between 0 and 1 . Washington post magazine did a fascinating profile. They wrote her brand, pragmatic and experienced is going to be a tough sell if what we really want at some level is for our politicians to entertain us. Do you think thats part of why you havent broken through more . It is so early, poppy. Weve had one debate and theres going to be ten. So its a long process between now and the first primary in New Hampshire and the first caucus in iowa. And those are states i intend to win. Im really proud of the campaign we are running, because we are leading the National Debate on womens reproductive freedom. Im the only candidate that went to the front lines in georgia to say that womens reproductive freedom are basic constitutional rights. Can you elaborate for me because this is what has been a cornerstone of your campaign. You have 100 life time rating from the planned parenthood fund. What is the first thing you would do as president to ensure womens equality in this country . A lot of things. I would focus on the economy number one. Theres a lot. I would Pass National paid leave is probably the first thing i would do because its bipartisan and its something whose time has come and ive led on it for over five years in a comprehensive approach to make sure all families can meet the needs of their loved ones and still succeed in the economy. I would also only appoint judges and justice who see roe versus wade as the law of the land that it is and guaranteeing access in all 50 states. But we have to make sure the economy grows for everyone. That means better job training so people can earn a higher wage, which is why im taking the fight to michigan and ohio and pennsylvania. These are states that flipped to trump in the last election and theres so many voters who need a leader who can not only speak to our base and inspire them to fight for this democracy by getting money out of politics and having publiclyfunded elections and passing a green new deal, but also reach across the ail and find those undecided voters and republicans who want a different path for this country. And thats who i am. I win in red places and purple places. Im the only candidate up there who has won a two two one republican district twice and brought the whole country together passing doipt legislation. Im so sorry were out of time. We had a lot of breaking news as you know this hour. When you come back i want to ask you about something you said yet, because you said its important to stand up to even fellow democrats on the economy. I would love to know what you mean. Well save that for next time. We can talk about trade. Well talk about the mistakes that have been made. Come back next week. Im out of time. I apologize for that. Thank you all for joining us. One big question today, can the labor secretary hold onto his job. That is looming large today over the white house and over secretary Alexander Acosta as the spotlight is only growing brighter on his role in securing whats been called the deal of a life time for convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein back in 2008. Acosta was then the u. S. Attorney who resolved the case and now that epstein is facing now charges over sex trafficking, over really the same allegations,
