May. The Unemployment Rate standing at 3. 7 . Lets get right to cnn Business Correspondent allison cossack with more on the numbers. Whats behind this big jump here particularly after a slower may . Everyone was convinced, jim, with may with 72,000 jobs added was the beginning of a trend. I think june is giving you your answer. It looks like may was just a fluke. So 224,000 jobs added in june. Some of this may be students were out of school and theyre taking jobs for the summer. But this number certainly blowing away expectations. You mentioned the Unemployment Rate. It did take up actually to 3. 7 . They are counted in that unemployment number. Where were those jobs added . High paying jobs in business, construction, 21,000. Thats a good sign because the Real Estate Market has slowed considerably over the past several months. Manufacturing jobs also seeing a rebound there, an addition of 17,000 jobs. One thing i did notice the stock market is open today, falling 100 points, an expected drop at the opening of 100 points for the dow. Theres a big concern now that the fed is going to have a hard time justifying cutting rates. Its part of the reason why weve seen the major indices all move to fresh new highs as of the close on wednesday. But now youre seeing investors get really nervous that the fed may have a hard time justifying why it may go ahead and cut rates at the end of the month. Good question. Thank you very much. Now to a cnn exclusive, Vice President joe biden sits down with our colleague, chris cuomo, talking about the economy as well as health care and immigration, laying out why his policies can push him ahead in his tightening race for the democratic nomination. You versus the rest of the field on the economy. Theyre all going big, 70 tax rates, free college, rearchitecture of the economy, a forgiving debt for college which happens to be the biggest asset on the american governments balance sheet. You do not believe in those things . I dont believe in the way theyre doing it. For example, i think there should be health care for everyone. I have a plan to do that thats rational that will cost a hell of a lot less and work. Incremental . Would you bring back the individual mandate . Yes, id bring back the individual mandate. Would it be popular . Yes compared to whats being offered now. Were in a situation where if you provide an option for anybody who in fact wants to buy into medicare for all, they can buy in. They buy in, and they can do it. But if they like their ploer based insurance, they shouldnt have to give it up. The flip of it is if you dont go my way and go their way you have to give up all that. Whats going to happen when you have 300 Million People landing on a Health Care Plan . How long is that going to take, whats it going to do . And in the meantime a lot of people are going to be in trouble. In terms of theky, chris, ive been proposing for a long time. I know im middle class joe. I get that part. The middle class built this country. You didnt have wall street build this country. You gave people a chance, allowed them to maintain dignity. How can you have dignity without having health care . How can you have dignity unless you can live in a neighborhood thats not fouled by the environment and whats going on. How do you convince the party that these more advanced ideas like all in for medicare for all that matter to them theyre popular in the party. By the way, watch. Thats what this election is about. Im happy to debate that issue and all those issues with my friends because goes what, again, look who won the races. Look who won last time out. We had and by the way, i think ocasiocortez is a brilliant bright woman, but she won a primary. In the general election fight who won . Mainstream democrats who are very progressive on social issues and very strong on education, health care. Look, my north star is the middle class. When the middle class does well, everybody does well. How do you do better for them exacly, and not with these 70 tax rates . I do raise the tax rate to 39 . I do eliminate the ability for them to write off capital gains, and raise billions of dollars, raise the Corporate Tax rate from 20 to 28 . It was 36 . To 28 . Trump will say thats what brought the economy up to where it is, is those tax cuts. Ask those people who work in restaurants how good they feel ability it, ask how the stock market is really helping, ask how driving us 2 trillion greater ipdebt has done anything for them. On health care do you believe that undocumented people should have health care in this country . I think undocumented people need to have a means by which they can be covered when theyre sick. And so the idea is that thats what i think we should be doing by building more clinics around the country not just for undocumented but other people when theyre ill, when theyre sick. This is just common decency. Youre not going to let somebody some popular, well over 50 people polled say undocumented people here should not have health care on our dime. Well, let me tell you something in an naerjs they should have health care. Anybody here in the country. How do you say youre undocumented, im going to let you die, man . What are you going to do . The idea that i hear this stuff about how theyre killing Social Security, et cetera. Those who have jobs, guess what, theyve increased the lifespan of Social Security by close to a dozen years. Weve got this this is part of what trump is playing on. It works for him this issue, the idea of law and order versus a left that seems like its open borders because it means its lawless. You have people running close to you now who are saying decriminalize coming into the country illegally. Do you believe that should be decriminalized . No, i dont. I think people should have to get in line. But if people are coming because theyre actually seeking asylum, they should have a chance to make their case. I would be surging as we did and barack and i did, surging folks to the border to make those concrete decisions. The other thing, chris, is why are they coming . The reason a vast majority of people are coming is because theyre in trouble. Crime rates are high, education is terrible. In guatemala you cant turn on a light switch. I put together a 740 Million Program with republicans i might add and at the very end saying well make a deal with you. You do the foing things to make your country better so people dont leave and we will help you do that. What did we do in columbia . We went down and said, okay, and i said heres the deal, if you have all these crooked cops, all these federal police, were sending our fbi down, you let us put them through lie detector tests, and tell the kind of people you should hire. They did and began to change. We can do so much if were committed. What do you say to the people in party right now when polled saying i like joe biden but i think his ideas are old yis. The new ideas see a warren and harris, you poll lower than them on ideas for the future. I say to them take a look at my ideas. I havent seen those polls. I havent seen what people say. What ive seen around the country is the vast majority of democrats where i am on the oigs. Weve got to be aggressive, and theyre big ideas. The big idea on education, on health care, on dealing with the environment, i mean its just i love, you know, how all of a sudden i wish i had been labeled as moderate when i was running in delaware back in the days when it was 80 of your party says its center left. Farther left is getting more attention and amplified. Its a disconnect. Look, its center left, thats where i am. Where its not is way left. Now, look, thats what we could find out. Thats what this debate is about. Do you think if you need if you went the nomination to have a female vp . I think itd be great to have a female vp. And if i dont win itd be great to have a female president. But the question is whose issues are best prepared in the wheel house, theyve demonstrated they know how to deal with them . Would you consider not having a woman as vp . Look, heres the first thing about being a vp ive learned and that is that todays environment, theres so much a president has on his or her plate, they someone they completely trust, at the same political approach and you can delegate significant authority. The president when he delegated authority to me from the moon shot to ukraine he gave me authority to make the decision because he knew i knew where he was, he knew i knew something about it and he knew we were simpatico, so thats what im looking for. Do you think the democratic ticket can win without a woman in one of it two slots . The answer is yes. But i think it helps having a woman on the ticket. And i think theres a lot of really qualified women out there. Is Kamala Harris, is she still somebody you would consider as a running mate . Look, one of the things im not going to get into because it got used before is when i was asked i dont even have the nomination and im presuming who i might pick as the Vice President. Thats easily flipped on me saying biden is being arrogant. Biden thinks ill have him as my Vice President. So im not going to comment on any individual. A woman came up to me i guess it was a month ago, i guess i was in New Hampshire and said all right, im almost done. Why shouldnt i vote for a woman, and i said you should. If you think that person is most qualified at the moment right now to deal with our problem, im not suggesting you cant vote for women. Look, i have spent my career before that to say my daughters and grapd daughters can do anything, and i mean anything that a man can do, anything. And so i dont have a doubt in my meend and if i started naming some people around the country, women not running for president as well, who are fully qualified to be Vice President , again it would be awful presumptious, so theres a lot of really qualified women out there. In terms of joe biden, what we havent seen yet hey, jill, last question. Last question, i promise. Okay, well be there in a second. Last question, i promise. The last thing i remember talking to him politically about with you was, you know, what is the quality, because he was asking me about what do you take for your father and this. Bo biden said to me nobody fights like my father. What does that mean to you, to fight harder than anybody else . I think it means two things. One, to fight without being personal, to fight and convince. A role of a president is to persuade. Persuade not just go out and fight. If they want for him clenched fist, bear knuckled fight, closed hand, closed heart, theyve got one of those guys right now. Thats not me. I have been pretty good at bringing people together. The whole idea of america is that when were together theres not a damn thing we cant do. And look, the most incredible response i always get from the last three years is when i talk about how optimistic i am about the future. People know it, they feel it. They know it, they understand it, and we cant stay in this state. What are we going to do . What are we going to do if we cant get along better . And part of it is persuasion. And people look at you and say i know what he means, hell do what he says hes going to do. Well soon find out. Thank you for the time. Indepth conversation with the former Vice President. You can see much more of chris interview with joe biden in the next hour and see the whole interview tonight starting at 8 00 eastern time only here on cnn. And still to come, no seen of an economic slow down. Todays job numbers pointing to a strong economy. So do these numbers take away President Trumps case for another Interest Rate cut . Welcome back. This morning the u. S. Jobs reports are passing expectations, but is that bad news for a president who wants the fed to cut Interest Rates . Joining me now is peter navarro, director for White House Office of trade and manufacturing policy. Mr. Navarro, thanks very hutch for joining. Lets start with those job numbers, certainly good numbers. 225,000, above expectations particularly after a slow may. In your view does that take away the case for the fed to cut Interest Rates . I love the fact 17,000 of those were manufacturing, and like 6 million jobs to date, one of the things that i love is that were getting people back into the labor force. Weve got over a million now workers in prime age back into the work force, labor force with participation rates going up. Yesterday the parade i was at, well, everyone was watching these incredible planes and tanks and everything like that. What i saw was jobs. And one of the reasons why were having this great job creation is how the president has gone about hitting the jobs issue on multiple vectors. I was personally responsible for getting things in, and were guildin building those in greenville, south carolina. Do you need to cut rates in the midst of an economic boom. Lets talk about what the fed has done and should do. Theres no question, theres absolutely no question that the fed raised rates too fast, and more importantly they engaged in whats called quantitative were below 4 unemployment, Economic Growth is strong. So back in the 90s when greenspan was fed chair he raised rates too fast and triggered a recession because he didnt understand the power of technology and allowing us to grow at a robust rate. I think jay powell made the same mistake here. He doesnt under the power of President Trumps deregulatory agenda, the tax cuts allowing us to grow with zero inflation. Jim, this is the bottom line. Theres no inflation in the economy when he raised those rates. He cost us a full point of growth. The trouble is if you cut rates now you dont have as much leeway to cut rates when the economy actually slows. That seems like to me a silly argument as an economist. Im not saying youre silly but for that to be the reason, but the bottom line is he raised rates when he didnt have to when there was no inflation. He should lower those rates back, and i think if he did that, theres two things that can get us, cutting the rates and passing the feds job is not to get the jobs up, but control inflation and perEconomic Growth rates. The dow going up is a leading indicator of our economy. So to the extent the stock market is receding its simply the fact President Trump has put in place an agenda, tax cuts, leveling the Playing Field on trade. This is whats going on, and todays news is great news. Weve had over 100 months of expansion now. Weve had really solid growth. So well have this debate ability what the fed should do, but bottom line is they should cut rates in order to keep men and women in america working and growing this economy. You talk about a debate, of course a debate over Economic Policy is reasonable. Is the president wrong to call the fed chairman powell loco, saying he could fire him . So i share the president s frustration and share all with all of america of a fed chair who raised rates too fast and is the chairman locowen your vi view . Im not going there, jim. I totally support the president and his characterizations and the problem here is hang on, its loco policy to raise rates when theres no inflation. Thats loco. Lets go onto the china trade talks. I didnt realize you spoke spanish, by the way. Loco is one of them . Lets talk about china trade talks. Youre very involved. The president brought you with him. Steve mnuchin brought a relatively optimistic note. Where do we stand on those trade talks and do you see china as making the concessions necessary to reach an agreement . Where we stand is quite simply we had a very constructive bilat negotiation in osaka. We agreed to go back to the negotiating table forthwith, and where we stand is ambassador lighthizer is reengaged with the chinese side. Were going to have good faith negotiations. Well see where that goes full stop. As you know the president is using terrorists as a cudgel to force concessions from china. But china has domestic politics and neither the Chinese People or leaders are going to want to be seen as bullied by the american president. So to be clear the section 301 investigation found china guilty of intellectual property theft, forced technology transfer, cyber intrusions, dumping into our markets, all sort of things. So we grant that. So the tariffs themselves are not a cudgel. Theyre a defensive measure against chinese economic aggression but theyre also important insurance policy. They ensure we have continued ongoing good faith negotiations. The Previous Administration before that george bush when they sat and talked with the chinese forever, nothing ever happened. The tariffs are a good policy. Theyre helping increase our growth rate. Theyre bringing investment to our shores. Theyre creating jobs for america. Supply chains moving out of china back home. On that point, the fact is yes you have a supply moving out of china. Some of its moving here. Some of its moving to vietnam. Thats all good. We have fair trade with other countries. I think what we have is a situation where the American People are solidly behind us. There was a poll that came out that said 8 out of 10 americans supported. 53 of americans support the tariffs. America, in the 2 1 2 years President Trumps been in office hes completely changed the awareness of the china issue. Now we have a bipartisan consensus both among the people and on capitol hill that china is a significant problem. The only people that dont seem to recognize it are some of the other people on the other side of the fence. Huawei is a central issue, and as you know the president is now allowing u. S. Manufacturers to sell to huawei. I just want to read what the fbi director chris wray, how he describes huawei. It poses a dual threat. The magnitude of these charges make sure just how seriously the fbi takes this threat. These were charges filed by this Justice Department against huawei executives. Why is the president if it is a threat to national security, why is the president allowing u. S. Manufacturers to sell to huawei . The huawei issue you divide into two parts. The big part is having huawei come into our markets dominate the 5g. President trump has made very clear he will be the innovator and command 5g. Arent they helping huawei . The one thing we are doing and this was in the bilateral, one thing is a good faith gesture and the president has agreed to sell a modest amount of low grade chips while keeping it allows us basically what we need to do on huawei, but it is a bad actor. Cnns exclusive interview with former Vice President skjo biden hiing a l biden hitting a lot of headlines. Good to have both of you on this holiday weekend. If i could start with you, if biden makes the case repeatedly in the interview with chris that most democrats are more to the center, the center left as he described it as not as farout to the left as say a warren or a sanders on issues like taxes or even decriminalizing illegal crossing of the border which biden opposes. Hes right. The polling shows that. Right. Well, look, half of the democrats who voted in the 2016 primaries according to our cnn accumulative analysis identified at moderate. 65 of them were over 45. He had a much more cleareyed view of who hes actually apeeing to than he did in the debate where he kind of stumbled at times trying to mute i thought his disagreements with the left. But hear shes very clear he does not want to decriminalize border crossing, he does not want free college, which is something focus groups raised in iowa back in 2016. He aimed this interview in a much more direct way that would make him a nominee if hes successful than he did his performance at it bait. And floating a figure about 70 top tax rate. He talked about raiesing it to 39 . Kind of boring old d. C. Policy there. Is that a jen rg Election Strategy that works or is it a primary Election Strategy . To be determined, right . Biden got into this race to run as if he was already the nominee he doesnt really do a ton of interviews, this being the exception which is why were overanalyzing it, right . I think joe biden to the extent he can, doesnt want to get brought down in the primaries. He wasnt necessarily ready for it, so, yes, his policies are designed to talk to a general election voter, and thats his main pitch, i can beat trump, heres how were going to do it. Thats not the point, lets focus on trump. I dont know if thats going to work because theres a massive field right now and polls show hes leading consistently but democratic primary voters still arent sure who they pick. Thats sort of like im the story and im sticking to it, im going to play this game but didnt the debate show thats not possible, Kamala Harris was willing to get the knives out in effect for him here. Yeah, the phrase is its going to come to you whether you want to go to it. There was a dynamic that emerged from the debate that i think is going to be increasingly important heading into the next debate, the cnn debate at the end of the month. But three of the four candidates in the top tier one ae sanders, Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren did raise their hand. You know, they are sponsoring the sanders bill that would completely eliminate private Health Insurance. Joe biden is the solid candidate in the top tier who want to preserve private Health Insurance and underscored more forcefully today and only 20 of the country overall and even 30 of democrats and Democratic Leaders said they wanted a Health Insurance policy, a national Health Insurance policy that completely eliminated private Health Insurance. Being centrist doesnt only mean being on the defensive. There are areas where it can allow you to take the offense. He mentioned specifically Union Members who fought a long time to get that kind of health care. They certainly dont want to give it up, and hes wellconnected with union voters. Okay, on the economy particularly on a day when you have such strong Economic Growth figure, job growth figures, biden is making his case here as middle class joe reminding people why he is, saying the trump economy has not done well enough for the middle class. Theres a study of americans are live still living paycheck to paycheck, that said, a lot of people noticing their 401k is probably doing pretty well. Is this a winning argument for joe biden . Its probably going to be tough Going Forward because it depends on what happens in the future. Biden is making this central pitch to voters that, hey, i am going to create a better economy than donald trump has. Thats a riskier point because job numbers are very strong right now. I do think pieden is a case to make when he said, look, this began in the Obama Administration and i was there to the extents president s and candidates try to take the more years behind you the harder thats going to resonate with voters. Good to have you on. Weve got a few months to go before i think the president ial election so i think were going to talk about this again. Posts from the group containing vulgar, raci nick, this is your reporting here. Theyre already investigating a first group. What are they saying about this one . My reporting along with my colleague, these Border Patrol source telling us that theyre just tired of living in this culture, that theres no room for this type of racism and sexism, and as you mentioned, it shows an apparent next is to customs and Border Patrol. This group is just as vile and vulgar as the one we reported on earlier this week. Its called real cbp nation. It has about 1,000 members and the memes are just awful. In one meme they make fun of family separations. Another popular target is democratic freshman congresswoman alexandria ocasciocortez, and as a result of our reporting, as i mentioned, cbp now looking into this page. Jim. Well, you would expect that. I understand cbs has also obtained emails that show Border Agents trying to humiliate a mieg gran in their custody. Another disgusting allegation. They say this incident happened in march here in el paso, and what they say they witnessed was a Border Patrol agent who made a hon dur enmigrant man, made him hold a sign that says i like men. They forced this migrant to be paraded throughout the Processing Center to humiliate him and embarrass him. And according to a witness, there was two senior Border Patrol agents there that did nothing to stop it. We were flagged to a series of emails that show that this incident was raised to supervisors, and according to the witness, nothing was done. We did reach out again to customs and Border Patrol to get their comments on these allegations. They didnt respond to them directly. S simply saying that theyre passing it over. Thanks very much. This morning new details in the deadly Helicopter Crash that killed a West Virginia billionaire and his daughter. The crash happened yesterday afternoon, soon after the helicopter took off from grand cay in the bahamas. Cline, who made his fortune for coal, is now being remembered. Polo, are we learning anything about what caused this crash. Much of what were learning is coming from those closest to chris cline and that includes the West Virginia governor, jim justice, who said that he lost a close friend. Of course, much of what were hearing are from his family and friends. Heres what we know, the helicopter took off, as you say from grand cay north of the bahamas early thursday morning, however it was reported missing when it failed to land. That is when residents and Police Located the wreckage just off the coast of grand cay. Were told they recovered the bodies of four females and three meals. A little bit of what we know about mr. Cline, he basically grew up in a coal company, his grandfather mined coal, and he eventually started working in the mines in the 1980s at 22 years old. And a decade later he founded the cline group and then eventually Foresight Energy known in West Virginia as a selfless and generous man. Very well known for his philanthropic actions and gave to his community and throughout the state of West Virginia. So this morning really the entire state of West Virginia is mourning the loss of mr.
