Live in christchurch, where its just after 3 00 in the morning. Lets talk about the scene. What youre hearing. I know youre outside of a hospital. Its relatively quiet now. Obviously 3 00 in the morning. Occasionally we hear helicopters flying above. Probably law enforcement. Outside we do see a lot of people coming in and out, some law enforcement. Some maybe family, maybe other people, but its a heavy, highlevel of security right now in front of the hospital. You see a lot of extra security and armed guards. Armed with really large guns which is unusual in new zealand in general considering a lot of the Police Officers dont carry weapons on them. To see Police Officers here with really large weapons is unsettling. Right now this hospital that were at, christchurch hospital, where a lot of the victims were taken, is less than a mile from where that first mosque attack happened. More than 40 people still in the hospital here, and weve heard reports with people as young as 3 and, of course, many others, at least 49 dead. Still not a ton of new information coming out right now. The man accused will be in front of court first time and there will be more press conferences. Hopefully bringing a little more information. And place this into context for us. The new zealand Prime Minister calling this one of the countrys darkest days. 49 People Killed in a number of minutes here in a very small country. Not used to this sort of gun violence. Tell us what a shock it is this morning there. Yes, jim. New zealand is a country of 5 million people. Its peaceloving, welcoming of migrants and of muslims. This has rocked new zealand to its core. Interesting when you played that clip of the new Zealand Police commissioner, he spoke about these suspects or these people who have been apprehended as not being on australias watch list either. The gunman is a 28yearold australian citizen. We believe from australian media reports that he is from a town called grafton. In northern new south wales, a country town, a sleepy town no doubt will be inundated with International Media trying to find out where this man became radicalized in his thinking, his ideology. How he went so off the rails. This is not australia, this certainly is not new zealand. So for him to rain this terror on what is a beautiful, welcoming peaceloving country that has opened its borders, opened its country to refugees from wartorn countries, it is just absolutely shocking. That gunman, i should also mention, jim, he streamed live his killing spree on facebook. I watched the full 17 minutes and it was absolutely hoar endous. Something i have never seen in my life. This was not a movie or computer game. This was a man who was executing people at friday prayers in cold blood. Its sickening. As i said earlier, poppy, i watched portions of it as well. The calmness and the joy of this killer takes your breath away. Yes. Anna coren thank you for your reporting, stay on it. Apprecia appreciate you on the ground there at christchurch, also on the scene, one key question here is our reporter in front of the hospital mentioned. You still have Police Helicopters circulating. You have armed guards around the hospital. Theres still a question here as to whether all the members of this, if it was a multimember plot, whether all of them are now in custody. What do we know . Can you hear me there, chelsea . A little trouble. Were going to were going to come back. Well of course, trying to cover this from many thousands of miles away. A lot of reporters on the ground and will correct the problems and come back to you. We do have other guests following this as well. S suspected gunman accused of attacking those two mosques is believed to have posted a link to a racist White Nationalist site on twitter and a lot of things showing up. Looking into this, what kind of stuff was this murderer, terrorist, talking about . A lot of disturbing things, jim. Weve been going through this. This is it here. 87 pages of this. White supremacistfilled rant and filled in these pages with antiimmigrant, and antimuslim ideas as well as some explanations for this attack that, of course, has left 49 people dead at two mosques in new zealand. In this manifesto, this gunman goes point by point answering some of his own questions about why hes committing this attack. He says hes a 28yearold native of australia, and the first and foremost thing he says is that he carried out this attack for what he calls revenge. Revenge against the people he calls invaders in european lands. The gunman really saying he wants to intimidate immigrants, and also interestingly, i guess, he said that he used guns in this attack to stir discord right here in the United States by really creating further conflict over the second amendment. In addition to that, the gunman also wrote that he has been, started thinking about this attack two years ago in the spring of 2017. Thats when he was traveling in western europe, and in particular he says he remembered the terror attack in stockholm, sweden where a truck was driven into crowds that killed five people. He said one of the victims in particular resonated with him and he took that attack in sweden as an attack against his own people and at that point really vowed to retaliate. So this mass shooting in new zealand based in part on this manifesto, 87 pages, that was posted online, and by the looks of it here, it looks like this gunman may have been triggered traveling in western europe back in 2017. Remembers the truck attack in sweden in 2017. Jim and poppy, looks like as a result of this manifesto, this gunman seems to have been thinking about this attack for at least two years now. Guys . Premeditated. Jessica schneider, thanks. Discuss this with a contributing oped writer for the new york times. Good to have you. You were right on this as it happened. A series the tweets that helped put it in context. A quote, he the attacker inspired by a right wing Ideological Group that inspires and radicalizes online. Is there evidence, youve covered this for some time, more people and more places around the world are being inspired by this kind of thing to commit acts of violence targeting muslims . Allow me to be bold, jim. Were weekending around the world is the death of White Supremacy that become the death march of White Supremacy. A globalized ideology of supremacy that believes white people, whoever represents white people are superior and have a shared fear and Conspiracy Theory, something called the White Genocide or the great replacement saying jews ared head of this kabul trying to subordinate the white race through the savages, us, the muslims, black people, latinos. If you see this language, trying to punish immigrants and take revenge against them used by a new zealand shooter and also by Anders Breivik in 2011, the mass murderer who killed 77 people and left a 1,500 page manifester saying he wants to punish europe and for integrated muslims. We saw in quebec, two years ago, right . The shooter who was antiimmigrant, antimuslim. He went and killed six people. Where . At a mosque. Also, i want to make this point and connection. This ideology, this Conspiracy Theory has been mainstreamed, being bold here, and you can connect the dots. This has been mainstreamed by republican elected officials such as congressman steve king who sworn by the replacement theory and has tweeted about it. We cannot replace or civilization with their babies. Right . So donald trump in the midterm elections in 2018, when hes promoting the antisemitic conspiracy of george soros, hungarian billionaire, they are doing to invade us, that language sounds very similar to the language used in this manifesto. Thats why theres a link here. Theres a reason why the number one domestic Terror Threat in america according to the fbi are these white supremacists, number one domestic Terror Threat in the number of plots and call it what it is. An act of domestic terrorism making all our communities unsafe. Not the first time a mosque is a site of a murder. Happened to the sikh and the shooter said what . Wanted to punish organizations bringing in refugees and he reshared a post on a right wing social media site that said we have to punish the filthy, even jews for bringing in the filthy, even muslims. The connections are right there. A great point. Poppy, the hate is connected. The pittsburgh synagogue shooting a the a synagogue with similar hate driving that against jews. Similar hate to what we saw today in christchurch, poppy . What is the most effect ish too tool to tamp it down . First and foremost, you have to call it out for what it is. Acknowledge it. You have to call it domestic terrorism. Secondly, you have to look at the facts and listen to counterterrorist experts and National Security experts that say they need more resources, more education, an off ramp for these individuals being radicalized online. You need to fund groups like life after hate that was getting funding, by the way, from president obama and his administration. When President Trump came into office all of a sudden life after hate was defunded. You need to have prosecution of these individuals as terrorists. Name them at terrorists and we need to have a really come to jesus moment here in america. We have to realize if theres a suspect happens to be a white man, you dont call him a lone ranger or a lone wolf. Their double standards when its a muslim suspect. Equal language and equal coverage. At Georgia State university, a study came out last year says when a suspect who commits the same act of domestic terrorism happens to be muslim, theres seven times more coverage. Awhite man, seven times less. Have quality when it comes to the language, comes to the prosecution, education, aware inside. I want the president of the United States of america, President Trump, to tweet something. When the suspect is an isis suspect he tweets hard. He did. Tweets hes going to get him. Go after him. Extreme vetting. When it comesal charlottesville, fine people. Do we have a tweet about the president condemning this attack . We dont have it. The president did condemn he did that early this morning, but came late, poppy. It way lacame late. Last night he tweeted a breitbart article. Thats a site for promoting and mainstreaming much of this antiimmigrant, antiblack, antimuslim sentiment in the past few years and steve bannon, was his chief advisers, number one book he recommends is a novel camp of saints. Its an a fictional racist novel which warns about brown immigrants invading and overtaking europe. Notice the connections. Let me just read the president s message. My warmest sympathy and best wishes goes out to the people of new zealand amp the horrible massacre in the mosques. 49 innocent people senselessly died with so many more seriously injured. The u. S. Stands by new zealand for anything we can do. God bless all. That from the president at 4 41 eastern time this morning. Appreciate your time. We need to go to the ground where the reporter Chelsea Daniels with the new zealand heard is back with us. Chelsea, we are hearing the horror stories, victims, dozens injured. Victims as young as 3 and 5 years old. Theres been some horrific eyewitness accounts here on the ground. I mean, i spoke to one man who was driving past on the avenue with the first mosque, saw people running out of the mosque. Apparently for their lives. They kind of looked and thought what are they running for . And then he automatically saw them drop. One by one, and he cradled a 5yearold girl in his hands as she was critically injured and they were waiting for ambulances to arrive, but the ambulances couldnt get past those cordons so they made a decision to take her to hospital themselves, and those acts of heroism coming through by the dozens. Same man saw his coworker holding a man in his arms, trying to say, everything is okay. Hold on. Words are encouragement but unfortunately that man who was shot three times in the back died in that mans arms. So these are some of the stories that are coming out from today, what weve heard from this afternoon. As you know, it started about 1 40 p. M. , and weve been getting stories like those continuing right on through the night. Chelsea, thank you for your reporting on the ground. Please update as you get more. North korea calling off the denuclearization talks with the United States is a really important question this morning as north koreas foreign minister says kim jongun is considering that option following last month the failed summit with President Trump. This north korean diplomat blames the u. S. For the breakdown in negotiations claiming that National Security adviser john bolton, secretary of state mike pompeo created an atmosphere of hostility and mistrust. A short time ago mike pompeo called that characterization wrong and does not see the breakdown of talks. From a visit i took one time previously and following that we continued to have very professional conversations where we tried our best to Work Together and represent our respective sides. I have every expectation well be able to continue do can do that. Paula hancocks live in seoul this morning. Interesting. The north korean diplomat struck on what we know to be a rift within the trump administration. Mike pompeo and john bolton taking a harder line view on concessions to north korea here. How are South Koreans reacting to what appears to be an impasse in these talks . Reporter jim, it was interesting that the vice foreign minister was unwilling to criticize the u. S. President himself saying that the relationship between the u. S. And the north Korean Leader was as strong as ever, talking about the chemistry being mysteriously wonderful. Very clear that as far as kim jongun was concerned, she was speaking for him, she said, it was secretary of state pompeo and also john bolton that were the ones trying to pull back from these talks in hanoi, but she did say that kim jongun is going to soon make a decision as to whether or not he wants to continue with these diplomatic talks with the United States, and also critically whether or not he wants to keep this moratorium on the nuclear and the missile testing. Now, we did hear from the u. S. Secretary of state saying that he notes that kim jongun said to President Trump that he wasnt going to test, and he said that was chairman kims words, and this is something that the u. S. President mentioned while he was leaving hanoi as well. So this is really something out of the playbook of north korea. Trying to put pressure on washington. Trying to get more active of what it sees as, once again, a stalemate and disappointment according to the word these talks did not go anywhere. Clearly, this will be watched closely here in south korea. Saying you cant just take these comments. Clearly, there has to be more than this. Hui saying we would marry frhea kim jongun exactly what he wanted to dosthis is a sanctioned message from the north Korean Leader, make no mistake about that. And son hui saying they would work hard to make sure the u. S. north korean talks are back on track soon. Back to you. And paula hancocks, thanks very much. Breaking news. Special Counsel Robert Mueller says that the former Trump Campaign deputy chairman rick gates continues to cooperate on several investigations. Joining us with the latest, how significant is this and what does it mean for the key question, is the Mueller Probe almost wrapped up . That is the key question here. In this joint status report we were expecting today we learned that rick gates cooperation is not over yet. This report was supposed to give us a sense how quickly they would lead to sentences gates. He was the deputy chairman of trumps campaign, the star witness at Paul Manaforts criminal trial. That resolved this week with the sentencing of manafort, the second sentencing he had and he also is deputy chairman of the president s inaugural fund. We know that that fund is now under investigation by the u. S. Attorneys office in new york. It appears that that might be one of the investigations rick gates is still cooperating on. It tells us on one hand as far as the Mueller Investigation is going, manaforts element of that which rick gates was key to is over and the departure of a top prosecutor imminent in the fresh counsel of office andrew weisman. The other hand, rick gates is still cooperating with as they put it several ongoing investigations. Gates is still a key player in his role even if the Mueller Investigation is winding down. His role appears to be very important in ongoing investigations elsewhere in the justice department. And plural, investigations. Right . Thanks very much for your reporting. We are told this hour that a public ceremony is in the works if President Trump can sign his firstever veto possibly sometime today. This after an embarrassing rebuke by republicans in the senate. 12 republicans siding with democrats voting against the president s Emergency Declaration over border wall funding. Of course, not enough, though, to get to that twothirds to override a veto. Joining me now, former republican congressman charlie dent. Good to have you, congressman. You were surprised more republicans did not vote against the president on this. Why . Oh, jim, because this is an easy yes vote. I mean, how hard is it to defend the precedent of this . Could you imagine if a Kamala Harris or Elizabeth Warren declared emergency on climbed change or firearm violence, diverting military funds . A very easy vote. Of course, this also shatters the relationship between the executive and the congressional branches. Congress article 1 authorities completely trampled upon by the president. This emergency doesnt address the underlying problem of poor migrants coming from Central America to the border who surrendered to claim asylum. The remedy doesnt address the immediate problem. Of course, theres a breaking of the budget act. Were actually taking defense dollars for a nondefense purpose. A violation of law. Ip could go on forever on this. This is just bad on so many levels and easy to defend a yes vote here. Let me ask you this. Its our reporting that the white house was threatening republican lawmakers with primarying them if they voted against the president here, and i wonder if you think that many of the republican lawmakers acted out of fear . Well, theres no question i think that many of the republicans who voted against this resolution did so because they were fearful of erosion from their base, but heres my answer. To anybody worried about a primary. Go out and beat them. Thats how you stand up to a primary challenge. You dont roll over. You fight. Again, any constitutional conservative can make a very easy argument about why this is a terrible thing to do, and for people like senator ted cruz who for years sanctimoniously waving around the constitution and votes against this resolution . I mean, you should put your votes up where you should vote according to your principaling. That didnt happen. Pat toomey voted yes. Put his vote up for principles. So did roy blount and others. This is not a hard thing to do. Let me ask you this, though, because you did have 12 republicans here. Contradict the president in effect. Earlier this week you had majorities contradict the administration on support for the war in yemen and now a push including among republican lawmakers to hold saudi arabia accountable for the murder of jamal ka showing any a way this administration has not. Do you see republicans more willing, at least, to challenge this president and how significant is that for this president . I think for the good of the country more republican members of congress do need to stand up to this president. He has trampled on so many norms and traditions. So i think it must occur. By the way, if youre a member of congress and youre running in a tough district, often times you need separation votes from the president candidly, to show youre not a rubber stamp. I tell you, having represented a swing or margins district for a long time, you supperly cannot be seen as somebody whos just there as an extension of the executive branch. Our system is broken right now. We used to have a system of separation of powers. Now its simply a separation of political parties, and it doesnt matter which party. Seems the party that controls the white house, well, their Congress Members are out there to defend the executive branch and where its gotten out of hand and saudi arabia is a great example where some have stood up and there will be more opportunities. Another topic. Youre aware of the horrible tragedy in new zealand. This attack clearly driven by antimuslim bigotry. The president did treat out this morning condolences for the people there, the attacks at the mosque, condemnation of violences have you heard enough from this president to condemn the kinds of perpetrators of this bigotry . Do you, in your view, do we need to hear more from this president . Well, i think what we need maybe we need to hear a little less from the president in terms of his rather incendiary, inflammatory rhetoric on racial or ethnic matters. I think that has been very destructive for the country. We saw it in charlottesville. Heard the comments about mexicans boog rapists and the judge and all kinds of comments over the years nos helpful the way hes talked about muslims in the past. We need to hear the proceesiden talk in a more unified way. He likes to divide. Im not blaming him for what happened in new zealand, same time, our leader are suppose ed to this is unthinkable, somebody going to a place of worship on a friday and murder or kill nearly 100 people. Or injure nearly 100 people. Its just horrific and lead verse to stand up and lead, and not be dividers. Yes. Good people listen. Charlie dent, thanks. Always good to have you on. Thank you. Social media platforms are scrambling to find and remove all video of the massacre in the new zealand mosque. The shooter, live streaming. I saw some. So did some of my colleagues, horrible stuff. It was one of two attacks at these mosques during friday prayer that left 49 people dead. Dozens more injured. With us on the social media side of this, we know that hours before the attack this manifesto was posted to twitter and 8chan. We know the attack was live streamed, the video subsequently posted. So what are the social Media Companies, a huge platform, doing about it . This exposes a major weakness for these platforms yet again. This is not something new. Look, all major companies, all the major companies, google, facebook, twitter, put out statements immediately saying that they either took down the shooters account or tried to stop the spread of this video. I want to point out something very specific on facebooks statement itself. It said that the new Zealand Police alerted us to a video on facebook shortly after the live stream commenced and we removed both the shooters facebook account and the video. The big question here, poppy and jim, is, why did the police have to tell facebook what was happening on its own platform, and more importantly, how long did it take for facebook to pull this video down . We know they were alerted shortly after it commenced. Look, weve put these questions to facebook and have not heard back yet. But the broader problem here is, why arent these platforms able to police the content on their site . And, look, these companies have put up all kinds of excuses when it comes to this and i say excuses but they see it as legitimate reasons. For example, they say that people sharing these videos are very intent on getting around their monitors and will make small modifications to pictures and videos that make it harder for algorithms and Artificial Intelligence to pick them up. But at the end of the day, this definitely exposes these companies to criticism that they are not making this top priority, and that they should be investing more in policing their own platforms. And exactly the thing. Facing the same questions here they faced repeatedly for years after things like this, and you wonder if the technology is so good at, i dont know, we talked before, captures your face in an image in a crowd, why not tech knoll to capture gunshots as theyre happening or blood on the screen . This video you would ing to is the technology not caught up . Right. You have to think about the platforms at their essence. At their essence they are made so that Popular Video is proliferated and shared. So the question becomes, how do you essentially go against the forces of the actual program, and algorithms, designed to do what the platforms want them to do . Its this constant pull and push that these companies are dealing with. I think thats what theyre going to have to answer for, and, look, they can come out and say weve put x amount of people on this. X amount money, but when these things happen and people see these videos being shared, they have to be held accountable. Its not working. Not working. Jim, a great point. And christina, great reporting. I wonder what congress will do about it . Hold more hearings . Talk about what youll do on this front. Well stay on it for sure. Up next, senator klobuchar working with republicans to help her in the 2020 democratic prime jere that interview is next. Geico could save you fifteen percent or more on Car Insurance. She is one of five women so far running to be the next president. Unlike her competitors minnesota senator amy cloklobuchar has bi republican fans in congress. What does that mean for her primary bid . I asked her sitting down for an exclusive interview in washington yesterday. You joked at the dinner you are essentially republicans favorite democrat. Republicans gush over klobuchar. John kennedy calls you very smart, wouldnt vote against you for federal judge or attorney general. John cornyn, reasonable, nice. Senator blount wants to achieve a solution. Senator isaacson, shes the real package. Why do so many of these like you . Ive tried to work across the aisle in a civil way for one major reason, to do better for our country and why ive been ranked the senator that got the most bills done at one point and other things like that. Its because i find Common Ground. You stand your ground where you should, but if you dont find the Common Ground you never get to a Higher Ground in our politics. Senator, wi klobuchar. That so many of these republicans gush over you . Well, i wont be featuring their quotes every place, but i have im not going to shy away from the fact that im results oriented. Because right now, we have someone in the white house that doesnt appear to care about working across the aisle or getting things done. What he cares about is finding what gets him on the news that day, the wedge issue, what will make the biggest splash on twitter. Thats what he seems to care about. It worked. It may work for getting him attention. It didnt work for running a government. So last month, our hometown paper, the Minneapolis Star Tribune asked this question, is she progressive enough to win the nomination at a time when the partys most liberal wing is ascendant. Are you liberal enough to win those voters or are they not part of your calculation . Of course they are. I reach out to everyone. I want to see progress. I believe strongly in standing up for people and having their backs. To me, it was paul wellstone, a great minnesotan who tragically died to young said politics should be about improving peoples lives and improving peoples lives is progress and thats being a progressive, not going backwards like the president has. So when you look at my voting record across the line, i have stood up for progress and for improving peoples lives. Im interested in how you, senator, would run against President Trump if you are the democratic nominee. So far, he has only called you snow woman. I take that as a compliment. You do . I like being called snow woman, although he didnt do it in a nice way. As i noted, id like to see how his hair would fare in a blizzard. How would you run against him . Head on, of course. But you also have to dont go down every single rabbit hole with him. Because if you lose track of your own optimistic economic agenda, then the voters who want to know what youre for and not just what youre against, they dont get a fair shake. And one of the things he tries to do is to side track people into what hes talking about that day. Ive been able to, in every Congressional District in minnesota, including Michele Bachmanns Congressional District and ive done it by stick to go what i believe people need to know about me and what they want to do moving forward and how we move our country forward. He wants to go into chaos, i want to go into governing from opportunity. And, number one, that is the biggest thing we need to do. The second thing is to not go down the rabbit holes and to not let him side track everyone every day. What does that mean . Sometimes you respond to him, especially when he is kicking at core values and saying divisive things that divide people in this country, but sometimes you dont respond to him at all. Let him go off and rant and rave about whatever he wants to. And then the third way is to do it sometimes with humor, which is what i did the day that i announced. Your campaign was shaken up in the early days by negative reports about how youve treated your past at times. Your answer was, too, i can be too hard. What is too hard . Well, to me, if you are a boss, you have to have high standards. And that is what i have always had. And that doesnt mean its a popularity contest all the time. So ive had high standards for myself, high standards for our staff, and mostly, im going to have high standards for the country. But one can always do better and that means you want to be sure that you are listening to people. If, you know, they felt that something was unfair or they felt bad about something, but i still think that you have to demand good product when you are out there on the world stage and dealing with people like vladimir putin. Yeah, you want someone who is tough. You want someone that demands the answers and that is going to get things done. Thats what ive done my whole life. So when it comes to the turnover thats been reported in your office in the senate being one of the highest and weve seen all the turnover in the trump white house, should americans be concerned at all about you if you are president being able to keep the best around you . No. I point to the leadership in my office. My chief of staff has been with me Something Like five years. My state director, thats our big position in the state, seven years. My Campaign Manager has been with me for 14 years. And i dont think you see that kind of leadership in the white house right now. You never say its sexism. Is that because you really dont think its sexist at all, or you just dont want to i think i have to be responsible for explaining my own situation as a leader, explaining that for eight years i ran a major office with over 400 people that had such as prosecutor. Had such little turnover as a prosecutor. That over 200 of those people were lawyers who are not always easy to manage, but did a fantastic job. Not just for me, but for our county and for safety in our state. I look at it as im responsible for myself. Ting media is going to have to be responsible as we go down this track and theres other candidates that get in the race and they hear other reports of people being tough or pushing people. Theyre going to have to ask the men the same questions they ask the women. Thats on the media, i dont care its on me. We are following the latest developments out of new zealand. Stay with cnn.
