Two real missing links to show interference and knowledge of the russian involvement. This could certainly explain the focus weve been seeing on stone. Because he could be the other direct link there. But i think if muellers team already knew this, which they certainly could have, then this would be very, very significant. And it really would be corroborate gre corroborated looking at it on the outside by the focus on stone. If they didnt know it, perhaps, this is one of the allegations that he is withholding that were reading about in the lating pleading. Its devastating to manafort. But its a potentially enormous link in the russian probe. Shan, so, the third meeting according to the guardian took place in march 2016 around the time that manafort was taking a senior role in the campaign. But also four months before wikileaks released the first trash of emails stolen by russia. Its the view of intelligence that wikileaks was the middleman, cutouts, as they call. And released to the public. That timing, the keynote of prosecutors, he goes in march that the emails come out. Yes. That timing is significant. Particularly, when we look at manaforts history, contextually having connection to russia, it makes a lot of sense that hes there as a potential intermediary with assange. Looking at it from the outside. But the timing makes it exactly the link that we could be missing. And muellers team, theyve already known this, gut for the guardian to report on that is very informative. So much attention is on that trump tower meeting in june 2016 as a possible point where, you know, this offer was made. Theres some evidences of that, plus the Trump Campaign says nothing came out of it. Is this the more important one raises a question. Yes. And also the element of roger stone. And roger stone who has not been called before the mueller team, as far as we know, is expected to be indicted. How might he tie in here . Well, i think stone would tie in as the other link. I mean, manafort, again, this is speculative, based on what were seeing, manafort, with those connections could have been speaking to assange about the interest of the campaign. And then stone may have acted as a further intermediary after actually arranging the emails. But i think when we put these two things together, when we look at the very heavy focus intensely on stone, and now this piece of information, i think this is one of the first times were really seeing the potential path, in this chain of links to the campaign. Obviously, the convention manager, campaign manager, being involved with discussions with assange is enormous important. Shan wu, thank you on that breaking news that just crossed. Meantime, mississippi voters back at the polls today to make their final choice for the special Election Senate seat. Republican cindy hydesmith who was appointed to fill the spot vacated by zach cochran faces mike espy. President trump head lining not one but two rallies of hydesmith. Joining to us discuss the political analyst and Washington Bureau chief for the daily beast Jackie Kucinich and for washington today susan page. Susan, you look at this race, yes, any other year, it should be a slam dunk for republicans but on the other side, cindy hydesmith, at least according to the other polling, a fair high lead here. Appointed in the spring when cochran resigned for health reasons, shes proved to be a pretty weak candidate in some ways. She seems uncertain she wasnt very powerful in the debate they just had. On the other hand, weve had very public polls available. But with the latest, they show her with a tenpoint lead. You expect her to have a tenpoint lead in a state like mississippi that won by 18 percentages by donald trump in 2016. The fact that were talking about that is worthy of looking at as a possible upset tells you a lot about the difficult landscape that they faces. And republicans are facing, including alabama next door in their senate race next year. I mean, alabama, obviously, jackie, a oneoff. Maybe, maybe not, right . I mean, if you see mississippi go blue as well, is that just two candidates not running good campaigns with some major issues here . Or is that something telling about the energy of the democratic voters in those deep red states . I think its probably the former. I mean, more and more, theyre uniquely challenged as a candidate, lets say, is an understatement. And i havent gotten a sense that theres the same that cindy hydesmith has similarly wounded herself. Its certainly bad. I mean, the president wouldnt be going to mississippi if she wasnt imperiled. That said, in terms of even the urban populations and in terms of, you know, who shows up to vote, it really it doesnt seem like this is going to fall through the cracks, but you know what, its 2018. Anything can happen. So, susan page, the big picture here, kind of gradually, drip by drip, this has turned into quite a historic democratic gain on the house side. Night of the election there was talk of democratic gains, low 20s, mid20s, just gaining control of the house. Now, its marching through to 40, 38 so far. Two races leaning democrat here. Just to throw up on screen, we did a little research, this would be the biggest democratic gain since watergate in 1974 there for democrats, that is. How significant, from your view . Clearly a blue wave now . Clearly a blue wave, not only by the fact that we now expect democrats to gain 40 house seats which is really a lot. But they have already broken the watergate record for the percentage advantage in the national household. More than 8 more people voted for democrats than republicans in the house. That is a remarkable number. And it sets democrats up for being optimistic about what may happen in the president ial race in two years. But, jackie, will have those, including the president who will say, no, no, look at the senate. Look at the republican pickup in the senate, and thats where the focus should be. You say . The republican map looks a lot different going into 2020 for the senate. But it does matter, if were talking about the president ial race, again, we were just talking about, candidates do matter. It really depends who the democrats put up against the president. This is a president who declared he was running for reelection the day he was inaugurated. The war chest is assembling. His ability to really get his people out which is what we saw in a lot of these red states. Red states did get redder, in the last election, even though democrats clearly had some gains in the house. But, you know, republicans are definitely looking at a more challenging environment going into 2020, just in terms of whos up. So, susan page, the president would like to be rid of the Mueller Investigation. He was tweeting about it again this morning, part of Ongoing Campaign to undermine confidence in it. Now, this report a short time ago about this meeting between manafort and assange could be of interest to the special counsel. We have now manafort lying again at the special counsel repeatedly. Of course, we dont know whats going to be in the final report. But at a minimum the results of that election hanging over the president s politician and republicans politics over the coming months . Yeah, you see the president with all sorts of challenges including on the southern border. And what at the tweeting about this morning . Its attacking the Mueller Investigation with even for fervor than he has in the past. These are two sets of extraordinary developments over the past 12 hours. First, that mueller has lost his plea deal, that makes you wonder what he was lying about, and how did mueller figure out that he was lying about it. And to this report to the guardian, that just may explain how russia managed to have direct contact with the Trump Campaign. That would be the definition of collusion. Thank you both for being here. Still to come for us, Congress Heading towards a spending fight as the president renews his demand for border wall funding. Could this push partial trigger, at least a partial government shutdown. Lawmakers on capitol hill this morning now have ten days, just ten days, to reach a compromise, or trigger a partial government shutdown. And foss President Trump, the border wall funding is key. Joining me now is republican carl Carlos Curbelo of florida. Jim, good to be with you. Were told by the Senate Appropriations committee, the chairman, that President Trump has made 5 billion, his red line funding target for border wall spending. Is that your understanding . And if he doesnt get that, is it your understanding that the president would be willing to shut the government down . Thats exactly right, jim. And the good news in all of this is that this presents congress with yet another opportunity to address Immigration Reform in a meaningful way. I think most americans agree that we can do more to secure the border. Weve seen a lot of the chaos thats going on at the border over the last few days. In addition to that, a lot of people know that theres a lot of Drug Trafficking that goes on at the border. Obviously, human trafficking, we can improve that situation, while also providing an opportunity for a lot of the victims of a broken immigration system, such as dreamers. A few million young immigrants who live in this country, who live in uncertainty, we can provide them with a secure future as well. So, i do think that here in the lame duck session, we can secure the border and secure a future in america for dreamers. And we can turn whats an ugly issue, a very divisive issue in american politics into a unifying issue. So that quid pro quo has been suggested a whole bunch of times. But is there any appetite among republicans to give that in return for the president s border funding . Is there any appetite for the president to make a deal on dreamers, especially considering you dont have many days to do it . Its the was this way well get anything meaningful done. By the way, we invested a lot into this topic a few months ago when a group of us led a discharge effort in the house of representatives, we forced an immigration debate, we forced a legislation that produced a bill that i think could be the base of any agreement between republicans and democrats here in the coming weeks. And the truth is that, yes, the white house is open to a path to citizenship for dreamers. We got them on the record a few months ago, when we undertook this effort. We also got 121 house republicans, the majority on the record, in support for a path to citizenship for almost 2 million young immigrants who were brought to our country as children, who are contributing to our economy. Who have followed the law. So, yes, i do think we have a window. And i look forward to getting to d. C. This afternoon and doing everything i can to try to get us closer to that immigration deal thats been elusive for about 13 years now. Well, good on you. Well see. Well see how it comes out. I want to ask you a final question on Climate Change, because youre one of the few republicans and you live in a district that has always l already seen the effects of Climate Change, rising seas, stronger storms, et cetera. The president said when his own administration released a report talking about the economic consequences, a whole host of consequences of Climate Change, he simply said i dont believe it. What was your reaction to hear a president reject a report that his own administration produced out of hand, he just didnt like what he saw . Extremely disappointing. Its reckless. Its irresponsible. The president should come back to south florida. I had a conversation with him last time he was down in key west, in my district, where you can see the real life effects of Climate Change. This is a report, as you indicated that was put together by members of his administration. Scientists that have no agenda, except to tell us the truth. They did not even prescribe solutions in this report. They just told us what the facts are. Whats happening. And what could happen if we dont act soon. Let me ask you a question i think you always get a solution yeah. Youve interacted with the president. You showed him the effects. It your impression that the president just doesnt believe it . Or doesnt want to believe it, and to be politically inconvenient to address these issues . I think he doesnt want to believe it. Hes dug in. Hes on the record saying that Climate Change is a hoax invented by the chinese, something thats absurd. And i think its going to take him swallowing his pride to just accept the reality of this and do whats right for the american people, for the american economy. And for parts of the country like south florida and other coastal communities that are the tip of the spear when it comes to the effects of Climate Change. We see the evidence every day. And its not that Climate Change creates hurricanes. Weve been seeing hurricanes for a long time in this region, but it certainly makes them stronger and bigger and more dangerous. Rising sea levels threaten our Drinking Water supply here in south florida. This is all very real. The solution is a marketbased exclusion, pricing carbon, taking into account the fact theres a cost to Carbon Dioxide emissions to reduce them and keeping coastal communities safe. Well, well see if theres a move for that Carlos Curbelo, congressman, thanks for taking the time. Thanks, jim. Let me take you to mississippi now. It is election day as you know, the democratic candidate mike espy trying to make history if he wins here just voted. And he spoke. After that, lets listen. Well, i cant do it alone, but i certainly have the resources to work with everyone, irrespective of race, irrespective of party, irrespective of religion, irrespective of sexual or yentzation. I work with everyone of goodwill to pick mississippi up. Ive done it all my life and im going to do it as the next senator. So, you know, its into the hands of the people now. Its out of my hands. All of the bells have been rung, all of the songs have been sung. Now the votes just have to come in. We live in a country that we can vote for the candidate of our choice. I encourage everyone to vote. If i can just say vote for mike espy, ill be the best senator youve ever had. Thank you. Okay. If you want to, okay. You last ran for elected office i guess it was the late 80s or early 90s. 1992 was my last term. Whats the biggest difference between running then and now . Technology, technology for sure. In 1996, and you can ask anyone, we had the best organized campaign in mississippi up until that point. It was mainly boots on the ground. We organized the precincts and the zones because mississippis a very rural state. We dont have a lot of urban senators like in atlanta, and like in florida. You have to recruit people that other people know. So, we had folks on our election payroll for almost a year ahead of time, getting to know the folks in their neighborhoods and their polls, getting to know them, encouraging them to get out to vote that november. And that was a district that was not a majority black. I want to remind everyone. Go back and look. In 1986, in the 2nd district of mississippi, the poorest district in mississippi, the poorest state, theres about a 53 gross black population. A slight majority population, but we have to discount for voting age population and then registration. It was like 46 or 45 africanamerican. And i won 85 black, 11 white. I beat the governors grandson. I beat the senators nephew in the primary. And i beat the incumbent republican in 1986. And then as things progressed and people believed that i would serve everyone, when i ran in 1992, i got 95 of the black vote. And 40 of the white vote. Its not just i wore great suits and my personality, its because i served everyone equally. Were keeping a very close eye in mississippi there. Obviously the senate race there. You just heard from mike espy. Ahead for us, how bad can the fallout be . We already know how many jobs its going to cost. Heres why, General Motors is closing five plants in north america. That means these workers must now come to terms with the sobering reality that the man they may have helped catapult them to the white house with promises of better auto jobs has made a promise that he cannot keep in key states. Here is one of those promises from President Trump last year in ohio. I was looking at some of those big, once incredible jobproducing factories. And my wife melania said what happened . I said those jobs have left ohio. Theyre all coming back. Theyre all coming back. Cristina alesci is outside the plant that is now closing in ohio. It has to be emotional times there. Just before the holidays. Just devastating for the communities. What are you hearing on the ground . Reporter a huge blow to this community. Theyre angry, theyre frustrated, but to the point about the political shift, the political change here came hard and fast in 2016. This was a democrat stronghold. In fact, i was in the Union Leaders office this morning, and pictures line the walls with president clinton and president obama. This was a democrat town until 2016. The community here, the area, voted for trump on the promise of getting jobs back. And that has not happened. In fact, as poppy said up in the intro, people are losing their jobs. In this community alone, 1,500 jobs directly impacted. The ripple effects of that could be thousands more jobs. And economic losses to this community which is reeling from a third round. This would be the third round of layoffs for this community. And so far, the locals that weve spoken to are reserving just on whether or not trump could have done something. Whether he could have intervened or prevented. Whether his policies could have helped. Theyre not making that judgment right now. Most of the anger is actually directed at gm. A lot of talk of corporate greed. And language like that from the locals that im hearing today. Not so much directed at the president , just yet. The day is early, though. And were still talking to people throughout the day here, jim. And, look, cristina, none of us can put ourselves in the shoes of those workers, right . Were not losing our jobs weeks before christmas. But the talk of corporate greed. Do they also see that gm is looking at the future. And theyre looking at the future of Autonomous Vehicles and looking at the increased competition and electric vehicles and saying we have to make some painful changes . Reporter no, the community really doesnt want to hear that right now. Right now, theyre focused on the fact that, okay, they hear gms argument that the u. S. Consumer doesnt want to buy small cars. But the counterargument from this community is, okay, put cars that sell in this plant, and well make them better than anyone else. Well make them more efficiently than anyone else. Thats what they want to see from gm. And i think a lot of the political ramifications will rest on whether or not a deal can be struck between the company and the community here, poppy. But its going to take some time, for sure. And theres going to be a lot of pain. Yeah. Understood. Thank you for being there. For talking to them and bringing their feelings to us, cristina, appreciate it. So, if you ask the president of General Motors a lot of money could be made in ride sharing service, saying recently they could make thousands of dollars per car if you focused on ride sharing rather than the cars themselves. This is interesting. Were talking about folks buying bigger cars, theyre not buying smaller cars. This is a big change that were talking about here. Yeah. I think its a painful conversation that theyre having. Theyre having a different discussion in silicon valley, he says with the car, theyre looking to replace that. And with the jobs, theres a lot of fear over those jobs and this all came out when i asked him the question of what does this city look like in ten years, take a listen. Hopefully, you wont own a car. You essentially come to us and well give you the choice whether you want to take uber or pool with someone. And this is a bus stop that you can take the bus today or the electric scooter bike as well. We want to give you every single choice. What do you say to the drivers who say im afraid im going to become irrelevant . First of all, i understand the fear. My experience every single time is that machines and humans are the things that are superior. Selfdriving technology for a long time is not going to work in every single use case, you know. If theres an airport dropoff and pickup. Good luck for a machine to figure out exactly how to get there. The promise of autonomous is that its going to bring the cost per mile of transportation on uber which right now is about double the cost of car ownership per mile, to essentially the cost of car ownership. When autonomous brings that cost down, we believe that we can replace car ownership itself. So, this is not a Company Whose goal is to double in size. This is a company who think we can grow, you know, 20 times bigger, 40 times bigger. Its fascinating hes trying to turn around uber, in terms of reputationally. Theyre going to need Car Companies to build the cars so they have a business, or do they want to build the cars . Its interesting, dara came in off of the reputation that theyve had that its them versus the world. Theyve had to change that. They invested billions of dollars into selfdriving technology into uber. That being said, this company is not going anywhere. Its growing exponentially. Its it will fundamentally change the way transportation works. And they believe it wont just be about cars. Theyve invested 300 million in a scooter company. He talks about youll be taking helicopters. He has a very different view of what transportation looks like in ten years and it doesnt evolve around cars. Jim takes a helicopter ride up here every day. I just scoot up here. Where can people see more of the interview . Cnn money we have a whole landing page. Okay. President trump refuses to condemn russia after an attack of three ukrainian ships contained three sailors. So President Trump waited more than a day to offer a muted response, muted at best, to the russians firing on and seizing three ukrainian ships and four ukrainian sailors. The president again showing his reluctance for those responsible as other World Leaders condemn russias behavior. Meanwhile, ukraine claims that there were counterintelligence officers on the ships with one officer seriously injured. Take a look at this picture because its quite telling. Its an image of one of the holes, the damage blown right through the ukrainian artillery boat after the attack. The giant hole from what they say was indeed russian artillery. This as ukrainian lawmakers have voted in to issue martial law boarding where ships are now stationed. To be clear, martial law deals with stepping up security activities. I spoke to the nato secretarygeneral Jens Stoltenberg about what nato is willing to do to prevent further escalation. Now, i know that you personally, as well, has called for russia, the personnel torsion release the ships. But what is nato prepared to do . What immediate measures is nato prepared to take to back up that demand . We will provide both Strong Political but also strong practical support to ukraine. Help to mobilize the armed forces, command the control, and also help them with the strength being the naval capacities. I also know that many nato allies provide bilateral support. So nato allies provide strong support and will continue to do so to ukraine. Look into what more we can do, and next week, we will meet with the Ukrainian Foreign minister, he will comment to nato and discuss what we can do including the security suppression in the black sea and nato has increased our presence in the black sea. Four years after the annexation of crimea in eastern ukraine, that combination of economic sanctions and military support has not changed russian behavior. It still occupies crimea. It still occupies eastern ukraine. And now, it has this latest military aggression. Is that evidence that the wests policy in response to russia is not working . I think it shows how serious and difficult this situation is. Because we provide strong support to ukraine. We have increased our posture in the black sea with more naval presence and more troops on the ground. At the same time, we all want to avoid a full military confrontation. And, therefore, we continue to work for a political mega shaped solution. Sometimes, it takes time. But the alternative, full military conflict, is something we absolutely must avoid. Thats also the reason why nato continues to calls for, or asks for calm restraint. And also a political solution. And thats something that well address in our political dialogue and we have something called the dialogue with russia and this has been the main dialogue with russia for a long time. This latest encounter is an escalation. Shots fired at sea. Sailors now seized by russia. Now, you have ukraine. The president discussing the imposition of martial law. How concerned are you that this current level of tensions escalates into something more out of control . This important not to show restraint and help to deescalate the situation. And the best way to do that is for russia to release the sailors, the navy personnel, they have captured. Some of them actually wounded according to reports. So, thats the most immediate thing thats just happened. And the release of these arrested sailors. Then there is something called a minsk agreement which is the framework for the comblimplemenn of the minsk agreements. At the same time combined with the strong support for ukraine, including helping them to strengthen their armed forces. Theyre on the front line, meeting russiasupported separatists in eastern ukraine. And we need to help them confront and to stand the pressure from the insurgents in eastern ukraine. Forgive my skepticism, if i can, but just for our broader audience here, will russias occupation of crimea ever end . We will never accept it. I cannot tell you when that will end. But, you know, i remember when the soviet union immediately annexed and occupied the Baltic States. That was actually 40 years, even more. But at the end, the Baltic States became independent and sovereign states. We never recognized what the soviet union did to the Baltic States. But, of course, we were also able to act in a way that prevented a fullscale war. Yes, its very different from the baltic state. But the dilemma is the staple that we dont accept illegal actions of a big power. At the same time, we need to act in a way that directs a painful situation from developing into something even more dangerous and escalate a full military conflict. See the focus there is a delicate balancing act. Yes, they want to challenge russia, not accept these. But theres a limit as to how far they want it to go. They dont want it to develop into a broader war. That was fascinating. He rarely talks. An exclusive interview with him. What happens, and russia just stays there, and what happens to the sailors . And one is now charged with a crime of apparently driving a ukrainian boat in russian waters. Well, there has been a startling rise in antisemitic acts across the country. Whats behind it . Well take an alarming and closer look. Thats next. Going to extremes for perfect skin . Where does it end . New olay whips. While not equal to cosmetic procedures, our b3 complex hydrates to smooth skin. Injections . Rejected. Beautiful skin . Accepted olay.
