A win. That is largely because of the senate. Democratic senators trying to keep their states in red states had a rough night. As of now, republicans have a net gain of two senate seats, with four races still this morning undecided in that chamber. All of this brings us to mark preston, who has had, count them, 45 minutes of sleep in the last 24 hours. Luxury. Its been a big night. Of course its going to be a big day. Lets start with the house of representatives as we are talking about what has happened so far right now. If we look at whats going on right now, democrats have actually won the house of representatives. They have 229 seats at this point. They only needed 218. But the reason why i have up this map right here is that i want to go in and show you where we are right now and what is left outstanding because democrats can add more seats to their majority. Specifically, here in california we have three seats right down here. Of course, we have a seat out here in utah as well that were still waiting on. We have a seat up here in the northwest. And then of course over here in maine. Now, republicans have an opportunity to pick up a seat right here in minnesota. That was once held by tim walls. He actually became the governor. We project him to win the governor ship. Republicans could pick up one, but this has been a fantastic right for democrats when it comes to the house. Bottom line, democrats could be picking up mid30s, even high 30s, but the senate, of course, different story there, but still some undecided races, including john tester. The republicans coming into this, i dont think they thought they would get as high as 55. But look at where they are right now. This is extremely important as we head into the new congress. Where are we right now . When you look at what races we havent called, we are going to head right up here. You talk about john tester right now. This is a squeaker. John tester is down. Lets see where the vote is, if we can. 73 . This is good news for john tester. Reason being, look at this. He had a nine or ten thousand vote advantage in this area and a quarter of that vote is still out there. Anything to that, were not only looking at montana, were also looking down here. When you get into arizona, another race we havent called yet. Only 75 of the vote is in at this time. They are waiting to see what happens with absentee votes, mailin votes. Well see what happens in that race. If democrats win that, that would be a democratic pickup. Then we go down to the great state of florida. Thats right. We always seem to talk about problems in florida. 0. 4 separates now rick scott, the governor, who has challenged bill nelson, the incumbent senator. The reason we havent called this race right now is because less than 0. 5 , it goes to an automatic recount in the state. If you are talking about legal challenges, think about florida. We have never seen that before. Legal challenges in florida, so unfamiliar. Key, key governors race in georgia. Stacey abrams camp not conceding this morning. What can you tell us . Whats going on is we havent been able to call this race right now. Abrams is not conceding. She thinks there is 77,000 votes still out there that could get her back in the game. Well see what happens. All right. Mark, go get some sleep. Thanks, my friend. Democrats intend to hold the president accountable. So many in leadership are saying. I do think it is interesting, though, because the key question is, okay, do you move to impeach the president . Do you wait for the results of the Mueller Probe . Nancy pelosi has issued some restraint and caution there when you are talking about impeachment. But really for Everything Else in the house this morning, it essentially is game on. We will likely start to see the oversight, the investigative committees really start to ramp things up. They will, in their new power structure in january have democratic heads of these committees. That means the power to issue subpoenas, the power to launch investigations, and they have already signalled that they intend to be very aggressive and they say provide the oversight they think has largely been lacking over the last two years. That could be everything from looking into trumps ties to russia, even more. His business dealings, focussing certainly on cabinet secretaries providing some oversight there. And of course the big one they have already signalled they intend to look and try to get is trumps tax returns. Now, we have heard some very pointed language already from elijah coupummings. He says in part this morning, i plan to shine a light on waste, fraud and abuse in the trump administration. I want to probe Senior Administration officials across the government who have abused their positions of power and wasted taxpayer money, as well as President Trumps decisions to act in his own financial selfinterest, rather than the best interest of the american people. And the white house this morning really already trying to down play this new dynamic, the fact that you have house democrats, of course, embolden and potentially going after the Administration Even more. Kellyanne conway saying it is the quite the contrast that democrats will be talking about subpoenas and President Trump will be focussing on the issues. No question. Thanks very much. The president will be speaking later this morning after calling the night a tremendous success. I will say a president ial adviser told me a short time ago the president does blame paul ryan for losses of the house. White house correspondent jeff zeleny joining us now from the white house. Looking at those mixed results, what is the actual feeling in the white house residence today . A sense of relief . Victory . What are you hearing . It is a mix of both, no question about it. The question, i am told by a senior white house official feels vindicated about this. And there was a sense here, really for the last several days, if not more than a week or so that republicans were poised to lose the house of representatives. Now, he can blame speaker paul ryan. We should fact check that every time we say that because the reality is there is also a school of thought that the president S Immigration arguments and rhetoric was hurting the suburban districts and they were likely to lose some anyway. But the president does believe that his campaigning worked and it largely did. Look at those senator races. He went to florida, indiana, missouri. He was campaigning aggressive in ohio for the governors race. It is still unclear what happens in montana. That is the race he most wanted to win to knock of jon tester. But over all, the president feels vindicated. That is the tone he will take into that news conference. He will declare victory and set the tone for house democrats. But just a short time ago this morning, he already started that, setting the tone about what he is expecting from house democrats. Take a look at this tweet. If democrats think they are going to waste taxpayer money investigating us at the house level, then we will likewise be forced to investigate them. Two can play at that game. So that is not a very good sign of working together on something, but officials do say the president wants to have serious conversations with nancy pelosi or whoever the leader is on infrastructure. Well see how that happens. But there is no question here the president declare victory, even though the fine print is a little more complicated than that. All right. Thank you. With us now, our panel. Thank you all. Important morning. Wes, i heard van jones early in the evening say it is not a blue wave, but it is still a blue war. The red areas got redder. The blue got bluer. Are we just in a more divided america this morning . What does that mean if thats the case for the next two years. What was interesting was the level of turnout across the board. But that said, there were certainly some blue pick ups in places that you wouldnt expect them. A lot of our attention went to these big races like orourke and gillum. You have members of Congress Like sessions who is no longer a member of congress, will herd who is in a very close race in the san antonio suburbs. You did have places that were traditionally we would have colored them in in red with crayon before the night began that went blue. That does speak to seats that were pretty traditionally safe red seats that are now blue coming into this new congress. You could say that the president played the cards that were in front of him, right, in that he knew going in that the house races didnt look good. And he knew the senate races is where he had potential. And he drove home that antiimmigrant message. Is this a demonstration of where the senate and house really stand . Where the country stands. I have been saying it was not a wave. It was going to be a realignment. And thats what we saw. We saw the metro areas of the country, the diverse, white collar dense metro areas move almost uniformly against the president and the house. It wasnt only the suburbs of philadelphia and chicago and minneapolis and denver. It was also the suburbs of kansas city and houston and dallas and atlanta and Oklahoma City and charleston. So the urban consolidation against the president , the price of the realignment he is driving became more apparent and more secure. On the other hand, this other side of this is that the president is improving the republican position in blue collar, rural communities. It allowed him to sweep out these democrats. The consistent note in both of them is that attitudes toward the president , whether positive or negative, over 90 of the people that disapproved of the president voted. We have been headed in that direction, but this is still the highest number in the last 35 years. And the states that matter in 2020. On that point, before i know democrats are disappointed about losing the big three heart throbs in the sun belt, but they won the governor and the senate in each of the three states. Michigan, wisconsin, pennsylvania. I was just going to say that to you about those races in michigan, pennsylvania and wisconsin. The president won them all. Democrats took them last night in terms of the governor races. And strong showings despite the really strong economy. Yeah. I mean, that to me is the failure for the president here, is he lost. If you look at the house map nationally, he lost this election by 7 to 9 points. Thats more than the republican wave in 1994, more than the republican wave in 2010. So you have it is kind of like 2016 where you have this huge popular vote win, second biggest ever. But the way the system is set up, it doesnt work out. Youre exactly right. We won the upper midwest. Thats really good for 2020. We need to continue to support florida. And i just looked before we came on here. Texas, hillary lost texas by nine points. Orourke lost it by two and a half. Arizona Hillary Clinton lost by three and a half. Looks like were losing there by one. Do you think it was a miscalculation by the party . No. I think its good that these candidates ran, but we cant expect miracles. We need to celebrate that we closed this gap. He had more votes in texas than Hillary Clinton did. Thats unimaginable. People are too quick to blame the losses on trump. In the house, there is several factors that go into it. History is not kind to the party in power. In this instance, we have many republicans that retired, which opened up a lot of seats. 40. Right. And fundraising. Democrats did very well in fundraising, and that was a big factor in moving this along. But the problem moving forward is, as nancy pelosi has said, now there is a check and balance. The question is will they legislate or investigate . Will they spend all their time on these investigations against the president . I dont see that as productive. Listen, we have a lot more to talk about, particularly about what that control means for this president and his legislative agenda as well. Please stay with us. Women winning in record numbers. 80 of voters say that is exactly what they wanted to see, more women in office. Plus, democratic wins for governor in key states that could decide the presidency in 2020. Is it setting the stage for the 2020 battle . She represents new york. Also the first ever female muslim women elected to the house. Our panel is back with us. Interesting night. No question. And i wonder, ron, i want to hear your view on this at different sides of the aisle. But how the Brett Kavanaugh hearings affected this for women. Not just Brett Kavanaugh, but also trumps overall message with women, comments, et cetera. Ron and then alice. I think to borrow a phrase, class really trumped gender. The democrats had almost 6 to of them. That was the key to these suburban games. 80 of the districts that democrats won, according to cnn analysis, had a Higher College education level than the national average. On the other hand, although the margin was somewhat diminished, still won a clear majority of blue collar white women. Strength is strengthens republicans, weakening them on the other. That is the dynamic we faced in 2019. For republicans, conservative women like yourself, arizona, well see what happens there, but both are female candidates. How much was this about, even before Brett Kavanaugh, getting women to run . Our colleague did this great series before the Brett Kavanaugh hearings about getting women to run. They did a great job organizing campaigning, being active, organizing these marches and getting women out to vote. That is critical. I hope republicans learn on that. We do much better in 2020 and beyond. I think thats critical. As ron said, women are not monolithic voters. It used to be you got pigeonholed about we only are concerned about reproductive rights. But it is more about the education levels. Higher educated women tend to be for democrated. They want to make sure that they can put food on the table and gas in the tank. What we are seeing here, which is strong, we want the best candidates, but women are good. You want something said, ask a man. If you want something done, ask a woman. You have a lot of Great Stories here, a lot of firsts. What you dont have is a clear National Standard for the democratic party. A lot of folks that the party invested that hope in, look like they are on the losing side of those races. So where is the National Star power . Who carries that banner to 2020 . Some of this will just work out, right . People will declare their candidacy for president and leaders will emerge. We have some amazing people elected to the house, military veterans, former police, intelligence officials. I was just watching the interview with the member elected in Oklahoma City. I feel like the democratic bench is so much fuller today. What should republicans do about that when it comes to the next two years and women and matching what democrats were able to do as alice pointed out . What was interesting in this cycle is democrats were able to make an argument that their candidates were representative of the country. When this next Congress Gavels it in, it will be representative of the country. The first native women ever elected to congress, which is pretty stunning. We have one joining us later. And so in many ways, that was, while maybe not explicitly, an ideological grapple with trump. Who are we as americans . Who do we represent . What republicans have to do as we approach 2020 is make a decision. Will they continue to double and triple down on a messaging that we are the aggrieved white party versus everyone else, or will it be a broader tent . You did have the first woman governor elected in south dakota, the first woman senator in tennessee, republicans, right . But there is a question about when you look at these full slates who is being represented and who do voters see across the board. And the democrats clearly had a slate more representative of them. White men were still threequarters of the reason candidates. Having said that, they did recover some blue collar white voters in those key midwestern states. They need to keep an eye on that because trump showed again last night he is the whisperer to those working class white voters and in 2020 it may be more challenging to win them back. Were an interesting country. Were a diverse country. There are mets fans. As we get closer to time, we cant understate, though, the importance of one of the branches of government going to the democrats here. You had two years of republican control, right . Now you have the house. You have all those critical chairmanships, house oversight, house intelligence. Look at the rebirth of many lines of the russia investigation. I want your thoughts, too, as well on this. How important is this . It is a huge change. I mean, look, thinking back on 2016, the investigations against Hillary Clinton were enormously damaging in the race. So if we think purely from a political standpoint in terms of trumps reelection, this is a game changer for him. I was heartened listening to nancy pelosi last night. She didnt talk about those investigations. I think she gets this. They really want to get something done. One quick thing. Tons of work to do. Are you concerned about house over sight of this and the investigation track . I think she may not have said the word investigation, but when she is saying a check on the presidency, thats certainly what this means. But i hope there is more of legislating and not investigating when they come into power. But this is an opportunity, i believe. Now republicans need democrats to aisle. They have to come forward with something. I think thats critical they both realize, okay, if we dont work together, were not going to get something done. Yep. They have to give in order for something to move forward. We know they can do it. They just did it on opoid legislation. They have common interests. Both sides want an infrastructure bill. I was just going to do it. Call me a skeptic. There is also big incentives from both sides. That is so true. When jeff flake said, you know, i couldnt say this if i was running again. Everyone, thank you very much. Georgias Stacey Abrams says she will not concede until every vote is counted. Well take you live to atlanta next. All right. It is not over this morning. We are watching very closely georgias governors race still too close to call. Brian kemp ahead with slightly over 50 of the vote. Democratic candidate Stacey Abrams is not conceding until every vote is counted. We knew this was going to be close, a nail biter, and it really, really is. What happens now . Well, if you listen to Stacey Abrams, she will tell you she has a chance of turning this into a december run off. She is down by a significant number of votes. What is still unclear to us, what we dont have an answer to is how many ballots are left to be counted, how many of them are absentee ballots. What abrams is banking on are these absentee ballots. Last night at a rally she was very optimistic, but so was brian kemp, saying the map is in his favor. Im here tonight to tell you votes remain to be counted. There are voices that are waiting to be heard. Across our state folks are opening up the dreams of voters in absentee ballots, and we believe our chance for a stronger georgia is just within reach. There are votes left to count, but we have a very strong lead. And, folks, make no mistake, the math is on our side to win this election. Right now 99 of the presents are reporting. There is about a 68,000 vote differential between kemp and abrams. He needs to get below the threshold. A lot of this was about the trump effect. But it was about voter suppression. Abrams didnt mention kemp by name but said there were people out trying to take our voice away, eluding to allegations of voter suppression. Kemp denying those allegations. A lot of talk about those exact match laws. It is the law of the land there on this one. It is fascinating. Well keep watching. Word to the wise, dont forget the state house races. High stakes races key for both parties this year. Democrats have flipped at least six states, while the gop looks to hold on to some key races. Joining us now to break it all down, Senior Writer and analyst, harry enten. Were talking about florida. Are there a lot of hopes for democrats going into this . Tell us how it went. The board tells the story here. Ron desantis and andrew gillum, he failed in that. It turns out that the trump effect seemed to work in desantiss favor in this state. Is florida just as a brief follow, is florida redder than we think . I think it is. If you look back over the last few elections, you saw rick scott win two terms. You also saw in that senate race rick scott holds the lead and donald trump won in 2016. I dont think it is a swing state. I think it is a battleground state but one that certainly leads red. Other side, kansas, state of kansas went big for trump. A big pickup there in the governorship and by a wide margin. I mean, look, we obviously knew him nationwide from that Voting Commission that went nowhe nowhere. Examined fraud that didnt exist. And the republican brand, the former governor who was quite unpopular with these tax cuts that just put the states economy very much in very bad spot, and it just seemed that laura kelly was able to play off the spot from the left and there are very many republicans in kansas. If you can get those moderate runs, you can pull off a victory. Forgive me for looking forward to 2020 12 hours after the election. But a race like this, a governor ship in the midterm going one way, is that historically an indicator with how it goes in the president ial race . It really isnt. There is a reverse correlation, believe it or not, where if you control for the governorship of the state, the other party does better in the president ial election. On ohio, another key big win and again by fairly wide margin this time for the republican. Look, if 2000 is florida, florida, florida. It is now ohio, ohio, ohio. President trumps brand is very strong in this state. The former attorney general, the final polls actually show cordray with a bit of momentum. Mike dewine was easily able to win. Is ohio a swing state . Interesting. Interesting as always. Poppy, got to look at those state races. Youre pretty good at your job, my friend. Hes fine. Hes fine. Thanks, poppy. Stay with us, okay . We have an important two years ahead. You will be busy. Next, we will take you to florida where the senate race is still too close to call. But we do know this. Voters just gave felons back their right to vote. Everyone, this is huge. This is over a million new people that can vote in 2020. Stay with us. Florida still up in the air. Never seen that before. A highly contested senator race. Scott is leading with slightly over 50 of the vote. You see it there. 0. 4 . The difference with nelson less than 35,000 votes. Cnn correspondent is in him with the latest. Rosa, it is not quite 537,000 votes like 2000, but it is tight. The morning the candidates have not said anything just yet. But last night rick scott announced his victory. Bill nelson has not conceded. Cnn has not called this race because it is in recounter toitoi territory. We talked about the raiser thin margins in florida. Take a look at these numbers. Rick scott 50. 2 , bill nelson 49. 8 with 99 of the votes in. That is a 0. 4 margin. Now, according to the secretary of state here in florida, when the margin is 0. 5 or less, it is an automatic, automatic recount. And, so, the other thing that were learning that could impact this is that there are still some votes missing. Votes that are missing are overseas military and absentee. Those votes could take up to a week. What happens in between . Were trying to figure all that out as we go with the secretary of state. But meanwhile, rick scott has announced his victory, saying that he wants to work for every family in florida, and were expecting bill nelson to make some sort of statement today. Before you go, something jim and i are fascinated by. And that is amendment four that passed in florida. Didnt get a whole lot of attention before the election, but now the nation should Pay Attention because this is restoring Voting Rights for more than a Million People that are convicted felons. You are absolutely right. And this law was seen as a tactic to suppress votes, specifically in the Africanamerican Community because of the amount of africanamericans that are inkars rated. They have to pay their fines, parols and any penalties, but poppy and jim, you are absolutely right. Some people saying that, you know, if those 1. 5 Million People could have voted this time, maybe gillum could have won the race. Well, yeah. You dont know how theyre going to vote, but 2020 implications here you go. Were seeing a race there divided by a few thousand. Great reporting. It was also a big night of firsts for the lbgtq community. Elected democrat making him the first openly gay man elected in the country. And the democrat of New Hampshire will become the first openly gay man elected. Good morning. Good morning. It is great to be with you. And congratulations. Were glad to have you. Whether it comes to the number of women representing us, whether it comes to native american women, first muslim women elected to congress, you i think it says that everyone deserves a seat at the table and that we benefit in terms of Public Policies that we see being pushed in congress when everyone is represented. I think it is really exciting to be a part of an incoming class in congress that looks a lot more like america. I think we will be able to come together in a way that is going to lift people up, that is going to respect the dignity of each and every person in this country and make sure that we get back to making progress again for people. I think it is really interesting to see what you did in your state in that if you didnt just win the blue parts, you won some of the red parts. We had your opponent mr. Edwards on earlier this week. He said they are not really interested in whether you are black, gay, straight, male or female. Is he right . I think voters are looking for results. I didnt run to make history. I really ran to make a difference for the people of New Hampshire. This is a real swing district. Most voters are independents. They tend to choose based on the individuals and the issues and not based on party affiliation. I think the message that the voters of New Hampshire sent was that they want checks and balances in washington, d. C. They want someone who will be willing to work across the aisle to get results and who will be willing to stand up to the president when he is wrong. That is the type of leadership i will bring to the table. I was just going to say talking about some of the issues, lets take health care for example. That was the Biggest Issue that democrats ran on. It worked for many of them in the house. You have declined unlike fellow democrats to support a medicare for all proposal. As you know, the price tag on that is steep. Youve got independent estimates saying upwards of 32 trillion over a decade. Do you have a message to your fellow democrats who are pushing that on why you dont support it . And to caution them on moving forward . Look, i believe that health care should be a right and not a privilege. In New Hampshire we expanded medicaid. We did it in a bipartisan way that expanded coverage. I believe we can look for ways to make sure everybody has access to Affordable Health care. You have said not this way. You said not with that price tag and not medicare for all. Is it because it is just impossible, some argue, to do it without raising taxes . I think we need to start with what we have. We should keep our eye on the end goal of covering everyone. Lets put the political assault on the Affordable Care act behind us. Look for ways to expand coverage and bring down costs. As i travelled around my district over the course of this campaign the past year, that was the top concern. Everyone can point to the fact that the premiums are going up and price of prescription drugs is going up. Coverage doesnt work for them when they need it. This has to be job number one for the next congress. We have to do it in a bipartisan way. We have power shared. People want to still deliver results. It seems like in the early hours President Trump, nancy pelosi kind of making nice. They had a phone call last night. He tweeted about her this morning. Do you think that nancy pelosi as speaker of the house is the leadership that your party needs right now . Well see how this all shakes out. I think it is really exciting to see the results. You have an opinion. You are going to get to vote on this. Are you going to vote for her . Do you need newer, younger leadership . I think we do need new voices in the leadership that represents the generation that steps forward to run for office. Well see what the contours looks like. I think at the end o. Day we need checks and balances and we need a Democratic Caucus that is going to be willing to stand up to this president when he is wrong. We appreciate your time. We wish you and all of those elected the best of luck. We are on top of the latest mid term headlines. The president will speak in a little bit over an hour. Well be right back. A big welcome to our viewers here in the u. S. And around the world. This was a consequential day for this country. Come january, one party rule in washington will end for at least the next two years. Democrats will have a meaningful check on and oversight of the administration. The republicans will tighten their hold on the senate. The bottom line is still to be decided in many places. Still very much a dividing line. Democrats have picked up 28 seats giving them the majority flipping that chamber. Republicans have gained at least two senate seats. President trump set to talk about all of it. We havent mentioned the governors races. He will hold a white house news conference. He is calling the mid terms a very big win for him and for his party. Lets begin with our senior political analyst. A lot to take through with you. So big that democrats have taken back the house of representatives. They needed to get to 218 and look where they are now, 229. How did they do it . Lets look across the country and see where they picked up seats that were once held by republicans. Look at
