Ofcampaigning. He will hold 11 ral states, the strategy it appears to drive republican turnout with hard line rhetoric on immigration while warning about the danger of a democratic takeover. Joining us is abby philip. Quite a turn around to the kind of rallies we will see. Reporter the president is really off to the races here before the mid term elections heading out this afternoon for florida, the first of 11 rallies he will hold before next tuesday. Now, the president , if you look at the map that you showed, he is going all over the country, but mostly to these deep red states where there are Competitive Senate races and gubernatorial races. That has led some people to wonder has the president stepped back from trying to fight for the house of representatives. We asked Sarah Huckabee sanders to explain why he is going where he is going. Here is what she had to say. Thanks very much. Sorry. I dont think we have that sound there. Reporter sarah made it clear that the president was heading out to the trail to go to places where he was beloved, where he did extremely well in the last election. That is really critically important because that tells us a lot about what we are hearing from him in terms of his rhetoric. As you pointed out this campaign has become about one issue and one issue alone for the president and that is immigration. He is stoking fears about this Migrant Caravan coming up in central america. He is talking about sending the military to the border and talking about trying to revoke part of the constitution, the 14th amendment. So all of this seems to fit into a broader pattern for the president , get the base activated on this issue that is really important to them and its all about immigration. Abby philip, joining us now to discuss this cnn political analyst and Washington Bureau chief and cnn political analyst, congressional reporter for the Washington Post. Jackie, as you look at this, this is not accidental. This is clearly part of a coordinated strategy by this president to focus on those wedge issues primarily immigration. What is interesting is also mobilize arms of the government, the pentagon specifically here to help with the message. The president is very aware of optics. The pictures of the troops going to the border are something that he and his supporters want to see. It makes him look tough and that he is doing what he can to protect against this caravan which is maybe two months away. That aside and they are not talking about how much this is costing. In some places this is going to work, places like tennessee. People were talking about the caravan. They were expressing concern about immigrants coming across the border. Perhaps in other places that he is not going, places like virginia, he is not going there because he is not welcome because it is not going to work. This is about the senate. It is not about the house seats where the immigration issue might turn people off. This is about making sure the senate stays in republican hands for the president. We have seen quite a transition from a few weeks ago, it was im going to cut taxes by ten percent and now the dangerous caravan and thousands of troops to the border. Now its sort of this unjustified legal argument that you can just wipe away part of the 14th amendment with an executive order. After tuesday, wednesday next week are we going to hear about any of this . That is such a pivotal question. It is coming so fast and furious that these promises are constitutionally impossible or we havent been talking about cost and time. If he wins, if the republicans retain control over both houses of congress especially, what is the point of actually following through on all of this . It may not be that there is enough will to do that with congressional allies to get that across the finish line. This is a question of turning out the base. You have less than a week left. If these are the issues that trump will vote for the people he needs to support him, then why not try throwing it at the wall and see what sticks . I think no matter how you end up the majority in Congress Unless you see a huge blue wave, it will be close mumgs in congress which means you wont have the ability to get most of these proposals that he is putting through especially when talking about taxes which has to go through congress. There is just not going to be the will for that by the numbers no matter what happens. I wonder if you see in the president s strategy here spending time in red states, seemingly focussing on senate races and going after issues that may even hurt him in some of those toss up congressional races, do you see the president seeing numbers on the house knowing perhaps he will lose there so grabbing what possible victories he can get on the senate side . That has to be a part of it. He cant go to the places where the he is helping by not going to some of these marginal districts. Had he gone there it wouldnt have helped him. These are districts, 23 of them Hillary Clinton won in the last election. By staying away he is actually doing them a favor. With his rhetoric he is hurting them. A lot of these republicans dont want to be talking about immigration. They want to be talking about the economy. They want to be talking about their respective voting records if they are incumbents. Lets talk about what has worked for the president. He basically won in a large part to the immigration issue. Its worked for him and he is hoping now it will work for those closest to him. I dont get it. The Unemployment Rate is at a 69year low. Wages went up almost 3. 5 last quarter. This economy could not be better for this president and he barely talks about it. Why . It would be a standard issue for a standard president to point at really good numbers like this in the economy. Trump works on the terms of appealing to peoples emotions. He is a very polarizing figure. There are a lot of people who dont like him. He needs to get more of a ground swell from the other side from people who are loyal to him in order to counter act that. And probably dry numbers talk are not going to drive up the base. They may appeal to the middle, but then that is the problem with the mid terms is that you have fewer people saying im going to vote because it is an election year. You have to drive people to go to the polls. Right now it seems like the president is very much betting on just getting the numbers out of people who like him anyway and will thus go to protect him by voting for the congressional seat that he says he needs. Thanks very much. So an update for you. We have just learned that a 55yearold Police Officer wounded in the synagogue massacre in pittsburgh has been released from the hospital. That is very good news. Another Police Officer injured is in fatal condition and in the hospital. Two remain hospitalized, one still in critical condition. This comes as the funeral for joyce fineburg. Hers is one of three funerals today. Funerals were held yesterday. Mourners were gathered for those services, the president was paying his respects along with the first lady. They visited survivors and wounded Police Officers at the hospital. They went there despite calls from some in leadership in pittsburgh to postpone the trip. Around 2,000 protesters marched through the streets saying the president needs to do more to denounce antisemitism. Despite the politics and controversy, the next guest says the families and patients were grateful for the president s visit. He is the chair of emergency medicine for the university of Pittsburgh School of medicine. Thank you for taking the time. I know you and your staff has gone through so much these last few days. Reading the account of dr. Cohen who helped treat some of these victims, he describes the alleged killer coming into the hospital wounded, shouting i want to kill all the jews. Yet the staff there who you supervised, they treated him through tears at times. They did their duty as doctors. I just want toask y ask you how managed that and what you witnessed on that day. Thank you very much for the invitation today and focussing things on the victims and the families. First off, the perpetrator was actually taken to a different facility. So the staff at upmc mercy did not care for both victims and the perpetrator together. I think your question remains valid in that people have a lot of ambivalence. They have the desire to help those in need right away and the adrenaline and expertise to serve quickly, but then realize that these people and their friends and co workers and family and it puts a personal nature on a difficult job. It is in these moments of National Tragedy when we see the most miraculous and beautiful things at the same time. I wonder if you can share what you have seen from the staff at your hospital and the families of the victims and the victims themselves. I have seen not only among our workers in the hospital and the professionals, but amongst the family members a real focus on the positive aspects, in other words, how do we get past how this came to be . And how do we learn from this from a medical sense and perhaps a societal sense . There really has been a lot of focus on the positivity and not so much on the negative side of the event. You said as we noted in the introduction to you that you and many of the people you work with welcomed the president s visit there, though many politicians did not appear with the president yesterday. There was a protest yesterday as well as folks who didnt want him to come at least now. Tell us why, from 94 point of view, it was the right thing to do. I think from my view as a physician and from most of my partners views, things that help the victims and the families realize the outpouring of support are positive things that help them work through not only their injuries, but the recovery from all of that. It is hard to find a negative in that. We support anything that would help them deal with it. You met with the president. Can you share with us a little bit about what he said to you and what you said to him. He was very grateful for the expertise and dedication of my partners in providing care. He spoke to the physicians, nurses and other workers. He noted how difficult the job was and reinforced his support about this and appreciated that we prepared and ready for the unspeakable tragedy. He was kind and gracious. Thank you for this but really for all that you and your team have done. Absolutely. Com sitting republican congressman steve king is facing a stinging backlish from his own party after he defended austrias Freedom Party which we should note was founded by nazis saying that its members would be republicans if they were in america. Now, just days before the mid terms in which he is still running, the chair of the National Committee is calling his comments completely inappropriate saying we must stand up against White Supremacy and hate in all forms and i strongly condemn his behavior. That is from a republican. We should note that king is no stranger to sharp rhetoric about race and immigration in this country. This year he endorsed a nationalist, many describe as a white nationalist. He retweeted nazi sympathizer. He wrote we cant restore civilization with somebody elses babies and wrote diversity is not our strength and quoted mixing cultures will not lead to a Higher Quality of life but a lower one. Joining us now is matt gorman. It is the head of the nrcc that called out all of this. The history is there with steve king. This is to be expected. Why now . Why call him out now . Thanks for having me. I think the nrcc hasnt been shy to show more leadership when the time calls for it. His words and actions are completely inappropriate. We strongly condemn them. We will not play in his race. This isnt the first time we have done this. He is the first nrcc ever to withdraw support from any candidate. This is a republican issue and not a democratic issue. What im asking is king has said these inflammatory things and insulting things, why only now is the nrcc calling him out . I think he does this in a thoughtful way. He was troubled by the recent incident. He said we need to stand up. We need to call this out. Again, this isnt a Republican Party problem or a Democratic Party problem. We need to return to civility in this country on both sides. You talk about a return to civility. The president s strategy in the final days before the election is transparently to focus on the wedge issue of immigration. There are republicans and democrats who believe there should be Stronger Security at the borders. The president s tact is to focus on the Migrant Caravan, to deploy thousands of troops to the border where there are already 17,000. Are you concerned that the president s rhetoric deepens the divide . This isnt a new thing when it comes to border security. We have run ads focussing on border security. We have run ads because this is an issue in states that arent even close to the southern border because it resonates with borders there, states like minnesota, pennsylvania, orange county, california. Democrats have done nothing to solve this problem. Im not talking about border security. Im talking about the demonization here. This is a president here who is claiming a right to change the constitution to take away birth right citizenship. We are giving you credit here for calling out one of your own for being a bigot. That deserves credit. Are you concerned that the president s rhetoric doesnt help, but increases those divisions . Chairman stafford hasnt been shy to call out the president when the time calls for it. So this isnt something that he selectively chooses. Politicians in both parties need to debate the issues civilly. Violence is not the answer. I think immigration is an important issue. I think there is a difference between being uncivil and pointing out contrasts between both parties. That is a very big difference in being racist or bigoted views. We appreciate you taking the time. The breaking news just in to cnn and it is disturbing news. More information on the death, the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. What are we learning . Reporter well, jim, these details coming to us in the First Official statement we are hearing from the istanbul chief prosecutor who has been leading the investigation into the killing of Jamal Khashoggi. This comes two days of meeting with the chief saudi prosecutor. Officially for the first time turkey saying that Jamal Khashoggi was killed straight after entering the consulate, that he was choked, that his body was dismembered after that. Initially he walked in, was choked to death immediatelily after that. Following that his body was dismembered and destroyed. This is the first time we are hearing the official version of events. There have been so many different leaks over the past few weeks of what may have happened to Jamal Khashoggi nearly a month ago after he entered the consulate. We have had different versions that we have heard from saudi arabia. This is the first time we are getting this on the record officially from the turkish side from their investigators of what happened on that day. But there are some key questions they say they still want answered and put forward to the saudi authorities who they say are not really cooperating yet. They still want to know where is the body of Jamal Khashoggi. That is the main question they are asking. Also they are saying this was premeditated murder, but who gave the orders for that death. He was strangled immediatelily aftimmediately after entering the saudi consulate. Did the prosecutor i know this is a statement have they offered any new evidence . Have they come across new evidence that gives them confidence of this . Reporter they are not providing much evidence how they got to that conclusion. As we know from leaks over the past few weeks, turkey has said that it has recordings. They have said that through these leaks over the past few weeks, that they have audio recordings of what took place in the consulate. We understand that they shared this with the saudi authorities. They were hoping to get more answers from the saudis who are holding the 18 individuals linked to the killing of khashoggi. They are detained in saudi arabia. Turkey is hoping to get more answers from those individuals that they say they want extradited to be tried here in turkey, something that so far seems to be dismissed by the saudis. Its been reported here that the turks shared the audio recording with gina haspel. President trumps visit to pittsburgh in the wake of the synagogue massacre did spark some protests from demonstrators. The Republican Jewish Coalition praised the president s response. They wrote a public letter thanking him. Your strong condemnation and went on to say it is regrettable there are some trying to use this tragic moment for political gain. The chair of the groups board signed the letter and joins me from washington. Thank you for being here. On a personal note, you represented my state in the senate for six years. You have been battling lung cancer. You just had a clear scan. We are really rooting for you. Check it out if you have a lump on your body. Early detection makes all the difference. Great doctors. The best at mayo clinic. Lets get to the news at hand. That is what you are trying to do. You wrote this letter praising the president. As you know, this is divisive. Youre convening Board Members to see if there is a way to transcend the partisan battle here. What have you found . Lets first acknowledge that there are jewish families that are grieving in pittsburgh today. Tonight there will be the mirrors will be covered. There will be a cloth on their lapel. Their friends and neighbors will talk about good times. My heart goes out to my brethren in the Jewish Community in pittsburgh for the loss that they suffered. So the president goes to visit pttsburgh. He goes to pay his respect. He doesnt go with a large entourage. He goes to the place where folks have been murdered, slaughtered and they place stones. And so he does what needs to be done. Is there a moment that we can put aside politics . A moment to say lets mourn the dead. The israel ambassador to the United States said it was the strongest Statement Issued by a nonisraeli politician condemning President Trump called it an attack on all of us. Is it possible for a moment to put aside the partisan politics and mourn the dead and then go campaign because there is an election in about five days from now . Do you have any concerns that some of the rhetoric from the president , some of the word choice like invaders talking about those coming in the caravan which is the same word that as you know the shooter used six days before the shooting, are you worried that some of the rhetoric from the president isnt helping . The Washington Post folks may want to take a look at it. President trump didnt create the descent into vitriol. It was there before. It was there when a Bernie Sanders supporter fired 70 rounds and severely wounded steve scalise. Had scalise not been there with armed security, those republican members of congress would have been slaughtered. Nancy pelosi said it would have been outrageous tea quate ho eq actions with the Democratic Party. My concern is this. If we Start Talking about putting a blame on President Trump, i think it diminishes the fight lets talk about the scourge of antisemitism. There is a 57 uptick in attacks just last year. Steve king from a neighboring state of iowa told the Washington Post after this attack austrias Freedom Party which is founded by a former nazi officer and headed by a man active in neo nazi circles if they were in america pushing the platform they push they would be republicans. This follows a number of remarks that people point to as being racist. You know that history here. Do you think that steve king is contributing to antisemitism and racism in this country . I dont think that his comments are helpful. We are not arguing about that. We are talking about whether it is possible for a president of the United States to somehow be able to do what this president has done in terms of not people from the bully pulpit of the presidency issuing the strongest denunciation of antisemitism that people have heard. I watched cnn last night. Their presence was appropriate. To put aside the partisan politics for a moment i hear that. To your point, do you think that steve king with his comments after this massacre im not going to defend steve king. I think that is outrageous. So given that, does he still have a place in the Republican Party . Your Republican Party . Im not going to defend him. Maybe he will come back and do some say he was mistaken. We have no place in the Republican Party for bigots. No place in the Republican Party for the far right. The dems should do the same. President clinton talks about jews as termites. Where is the outrage . Is it possible that we could have had a couple of days of not getting into this debate . Is it possible for republicans, democrats to come together and say we are going to fight antisemitism to make sure this scourge is eradicated which is what President Trump has called for. Lets hope there can be a lot of unity. Jim and i just reported that the turkish prosecutor has just reported that the journalist Jamal Khashoggis body, he was strangled, his body was dismembered. The Washington Post reports that your work through your lobbying firm has a contract for 1. 5 million this year alone to represent the saudi government. Given the murder of this journalist that was premeditated according to the saudis themselves, will you still continue to work and be paid for by the saudi government . I work for the saudis on dealing with the iranian threat for the region. Whatever has gone on is terrible. Lets figure it out. The strategic relationship will continue. What i can do to be helpful to make sure iran cannot threaten the existence of israel, if i can be helpful in that regard i will continue to be helpful. But you are being paid for by the saudi regime. You remember your fellow republicans, john mccain, who said values are our interests and interests are our values. Should you continue to be paid by the saudi government . The strategic relationship will go on. Iran continues to be the threat. Lets the bottom line, people responsible should be held accountable. At the same time, lets make sure that we dont undermine the strategic relationship which is important to the security of the United States and to the security of israel. Hold those accountable with the assumption with those who are responsible will be held accountable. Thank you very much for being with us. We wish you the best in your recovery. Well be right back. Threats as opposed to just saying things like youre next, hug your loved ones, tweeting pictures of peoples home addresses. Twitters response has been that they are going to try to improve the process in which they detect threats that are not reported. Now . The companies always do this. Facebook and twitter always say we will do better. We never see the improvements. Does selfregulation based on selfregulation here. You dont have an outsider saying you have to do this under penalty of liability or Something Like that. Is there any evidence that that has worked with any of the social media . There has been very little action by lawmakers to pressure the companies. Yes once in a while they get called up to capitol hill. There is not that sustained pressure to make the social platforms more safe for all users. Thats ultimately what this is about, safety on the internet. The call on the times was brilliant. We are just six days away from the mid term elections and north dakota faced with multiple lawsuits over alleged suppression of voters. You must have a card shown in order to vote. So this is difficult for some native americans who live on reservations. Drew griffin is following this story for us. What are the claims being made here . Reporter north Dakota Republican legislator passed a law going into effect for this election that says to vote in the state of north dakota you have to have an i. D. With a name and matching street address. That was seen as discriminatory towards native americans. They live out on reservations. Many people live on streets that dont have names. They deal with post office box on their i. D. A lawsuit was just filed on behalf of six voters who are either afraid they wont be able to vote on election day because of that or in the case of one person, his absentee ballot application as been denied. We learned from the attorneys they plan to file a temporary restraining order request to try to stop this state law from going into effect. Here is what is difficult to determine. They dont have Voter Registration in the state of north dakota. If you show up for the polls on election day with an i. D. , you should be able to vote. All of this is cull miinated in what is going to happen on election day is creating a lot of fear among native americans not only that they may not come out to vote because they are afraid of the new law, or because they are unsure that they are going to be able to vote because of the new law. Lawsuits filed yesterday and temporary restraining order today. This law became hot and heavy aft. Important reporting. Thank you for being on top of it. Keep us posted. Thank you for joining us today. Well see you back here tomorrow. Im poppy harlow. Im jim sciutto. At this hour starts right now. Hello, everyone. President trump racing the clock and wrapping up the miles.
