Reports that the agency believes Russian Hackers intervened in the election. Specifically in an effort to help donald trump win. This is trumps Transition Team releases a statement reading. These are the same people who said, zam had weapons of mass destruction. Its now time to move on and make America Great again. The cia for its part not commenting. Trumps assertion that the Intelligence Team of today, is the same as 13 years ago, with the faulty wmd intelligence, its just not true. Heres how Lindsey Graham reacted today on twitter. Im not challenging the outcome of the election. Im concerned about attacks throughout the world. Theyre trying to undermine democracies all over the world. Ryan nobles is live from baltimore. Someone else there who you just spoke to, senator john mccain, you spoke with him about russias relationship with trumps leading candidate right now. What did senator mccain say . Well, senator mccain has concern concerns he is a harsh critic of putin and the russian government. He has concerned if rex untiler son becomes the secretary of state nominee. Hes concerned that untiler son and his deep relationship with Vladimir Putin could be a problem. Those concerns wouldnt hesitate him to say no. Vladimir putin is a thug and a murderer, we will have hearings on that issue and other issues concerning him will be examined and thats the time to make up your mind as to whether to vote yes or no. What kind of questions would you ask Rex Tillerson that would make you feel comfort in a role like that. The fact that the leader of the opposition was murdered on the orders of Vladimir Putin and the shadow of the kremlin. Mccains real in this cant be understated. Because republicans have the majority in the senate, most if not all of Donald Trumps cabinet appointments will sail through. This could be a confirmation battle for the Incoming Trump administration fp we need to caution that we dont know yet if rex untiler son is going to be the secretary of state. No official announcement will be made today. And we shouldnt expect anything at the earliest until the coming we week. When you talk about russia, the two men could not have more different views about what they said. Romney said its the greatest geo political foe of the United States. And many people question that at the time. Hindsight is 20 20 on that. Untiler son said about sanctions on russia, we encourage people who are making these decisions to consider the broad Collateral Damage of who theyre harming with these sanctions. Theres a big difference between these two picks. Its interesting too, this might be the most important cabinet pick that the president elect has. And it looks as though hes ready and prepared for a fight its not just the ties to russia, but the ceo of a global oil company. Thats going to raise concerns as well. This wont be an easy go of it for president elect trump. Our sources tell us hes been impressed with tillerson from the beginning of this process. He slowly moved his way up to the top. We know he was at trump tower this morning, theres no doubt hes the leading candidate. Jill doherty is a global fellow for the Woodrow Wilson institu institute. How does putin view donald trump. I know that one time during the campaign putin called him brilliant. That didnt turn out to be the exact translation . Right, but then about a week ago, president putin repeated that and said smart the context of that was interesting. Mr. Trump is a smart man. He has to be, because he was a smart businessman. We expect him to continue. The context was hell know the ropes and responsibilities of a president. He has called him smart now, they have a similar world view in the sense that its quite reami reamistic. Lets do a deal, lets work together. Keep it pretty black and white. Dont worry about extraneous issues. Lets fight terrorism together. I think its pretty transactional that putin would like to have with trump and trump with putin. For its part, the Republican National committee is siding with trump. Ben spicer slamming the report on must see television. Here it is. I want to understand facts. You are telling me that you know to a certainty that the rnc was not hacked by the russians or anyone else. To the extent that anyone rep t reports that the rnc was hacked, sean spieser knows that to be a falsehood . I know we have worked with intelligence agencies who are saying we have not been hacked. Our own systems show that we have not been hacked. Im not a forensic computer person, i cant say i know the intelligence agencies were working with, tell us with certainty that we havent been hacked. Weve said it before, and tried to work with these Media Outlets to show it to them. Theyve chosen not to engage in that conversation. Thats not my fault, michael. Look at the reports, if theyre so certain it happened, why wont they go on the record and say it . I dont understand it. It doesnt make any sense. Theres an obvious answer to that, they dont want the russians to know of the way in which theyve been able to assemble this case. What they did with the dnc. Please dont make excuses for them. They came out and michael, they came out and said with respect to the dny. And the dnc confirmed it, i dont understand why theres questions on that side, weve been willing to talk to people to show it wasnt true. People are willing to ignore it. On the flip side, theres a difference. Im just trying to get the facts out is there, and somehow, its, you must be lying, you must not be accepting the facts. No, im trying to get the truth out there. The implication is clear. No, michael. With all due respect. You impugn. You said, why wont we accept the facts. Im trying to get the facts out. Im trying to make reporters understand whats happening and bring them into the process. Im making a different point casting doubt on whether sean spicer knows the answer to the question. My frustration is the idea that until this thing is fully developed, already, president elect trump is saying move on, folks, theres nothing to see here. Speak to the point that i i wan you to address this, im also concerned. 12k3w4r geez. Im troubled by the idea that my president elect is already throwing under the bus the Intelligence Community with whom hes going to have to work on life and death matters. Wasnt that a troubling thing to do at 9 34 last night in that very. No, no. The New York Times in their story, said they base their conclusion on the fact that the rnc was hacked. If the rnc was not hacked, that casts doubt on their conclusions. I dont understand why this is that difficult to understand. Regardless of whether the rnc was hacked and that would be a big and new development, i think we know to a certainty given modesta and Debbie Wassermanschultz that the dnc was hacked. Why arent we as americans upset about the fact that a foreign hostile actor put its thumb on the scale in our election, and why doesnt donald trump want to get to the bottom of that as he takes office. Thats the issue. I dont think any foreign entity why dont you say that. I just said it, michael. Stop and let me i just said it let me take yes for an answer. I dont think donald trump doesnt think, no one thinks that a foreign entity should be interfering with the u. S. Elections. Lets get to the next thing, what proof does anyone have that they effected the outcome. I heard zero. Show me what facts have shown that anything undermines that election. 2300 counties, 62 million americans voted for him. What proof do you have or does anyone have that this affected the outcome of this election. Im just an american whose trying to disearn all that im reporting on. No, answer the question. I want the show me one fact that an outcome was changed. Ask Debbie Wasserman i cant say it impacted the ultimate outcome. Go ask Debbie Wasserman schultz. Thank you. Do be continued, i do appreciate you being here. Id love to talk to your boss on this. Hes a watcher, he tweets about my show. Mr. President elect, ill treat you with dignity and respect, come here and let me ask you these questions, thank you, sean, i do appreciate you. Thank you, michael. The man is with me next. Dont miss this, youre live on the cnn newsroom. Worry free and even carry over the data you dont use. And right now get four lines and 20 gigs for only 40 per line. And, just for the holidays, get the motoz play droid absolutely free. No tradein required. I love you in that, no, i love you in that. No, i love you in that vo hurry, these offers end soon. Get the best deals and the best network, only on verizon. Better than a manual, and my hygienist says it does. But. Theyre not all the same. Turns out, theyre really. Different. Who knew . Ill only use an oralb the 1 brand used by dentists worldwide. Oralb. Brush like a pro. Before the break, you heard the Heated Exchange between Michael Smerconish and sean spicer. He asked about the cia slamming reports that russia meddled in the election. Specifically in an effort to get donald trump elected. Heres a short expert. Why arent we as americans upset about the fact that a foreign hostile actor apparently put its thumb on the scale in our election, and why doesnt donald trump want to get to the bottom of that as he takes office. Thats the issue many. Theres a couple things i dont think any foreign entity, any individual. Why dont you say that, and why didnt truchld that. Im saying it. I just said it. I just said it, let me take yes for an answer. If you have not seen that full interview, you need to go online and watch it right now. I told you i was watching at the gym and i almost fell off the treadmill this morning. Truly watching all of this, but on a very serious and Important Note to all americans, no matter what your political persuasion, you you know, it took you a good five, maybe almost 10 minutes in that interview before sean spicer would say or said, i am outraged. That struck me, did it strike you . It not only struck me, it made me wonder, why did it take so long to get him to condemn that. And why last night at 9 340 at night, didnt the statement that was set out by the Transition Team lead with that. I mean, in other words, why not lead with the idea that they condemn the nature, the notion of any hack whatsoever, and then make whatever point they wanted to make. And the frustration that you heard in my voice is that i dont think this is a case where we should suit up in our republican, democratic or independent jerseys and decide, do we like the outcome of the election . And then act accordingly. No, this is one of those circumstances where you would hope we would unite as americans and say, wait a minute, whether i was for hillary, donald, youre telling me that perhaps Vladimir Putin had his thumb on the scale . We need to get to the bottom of that first. You know, sean spicer said to you in the independent view at one point or was indicating it was almost outcome determinative. Meaning, well wheres the proof . I think its secondary. I dont think it makes it any less serious an idea if there were a hack. Im kicking myself for not having asked a better followup which is this. If i had it to do over again, id say, hold on, sean, were talking about 80,000 votes in swing states and you know, she did win the popular vote. Maybe i should not have been so dismissive of the idea that this altered the outcome. When we look at the next moves that the president elects team will make. The next mick they have to make is secretary of state. Rex tillerson is at the top of the list. Why does that matter . It matters, because he as the head of exxon inked a huge oil deal with one of their biggest oil companies, the state is a big player in 37 that he received an award from russia just three years ago. Including questions that john mccain just brought up to ryan nobles this morning. How dicey will that be if it is rex untiler son. I think it will be very dicey. This issue has raised the stock of governor romney. Put him diet trickily opposed to rex iler son. Im reviewing in my mind, he asked Vladimir Putin to release whatever emails they may have had. I think the whole situation is really unsettling and the ball is in the president elects court to Say Something like that which sean spacer said well into the interview. It was a breathtaking interview that almost knocked me off the cycle. If you missed it this morning, can you see the entire interview he did with sean spicer. cause theres a million things to be you know that there are you know that there are enepeople want power. Hallenge. And power plants account for more than a third of energyrelated carbon emissions. The challenge is to capture the emissions before theyre released into the atmosphere. Exxonmobil is a leader in carbon capture. Our team is working to make this technology better, more affordable so it can reduce emissions around the world. Thats what were working on right now. Energy lives here. Breaking news right now from turkey, two large explosions near the center of istanbul. Again, this is in central istanbul after a soccer match, and a business saturday night game. Two separate explosions went off outside of the stadium. At least 20 people are injured. Turkish officials say, at least one of the explosions was caused by a car bomb, and a state News Agency Says the Police Officer is the apparent target of the attack. Were following developments tonight in istanbul closely, well bring you more as we have it. Coming up here, hes the billionaire investor that president elect donald trump leans on to help select cab dmet members and his economic team. And when it comes to the epa, carl icahn has well, he says hes supportive of Climate Change denier, that has now been chosen to lead the agency why he says he changed his tune on this pick. Part two of my interview is next. Speaking of tech wonders, with the geico app you can get roadside assistance, digital id cards. Or even file a claim. Do that. Yeah, yeah that should work. Its not happening. Just try again. Uh, i think i found your problem. Thanks. Hmm. The awardwinning geico app. Download it today. And her new mobile wedding business. Left untreated, these symptoms could lead to more Serious Problems including tooth loss. Gum crisis averted. The next treasury secretary told me a few weeks ago, he never worked for anyone in his life and had no desire to go to washington. Hes been integral in the recent weeks. He was heavily involved with selections for his cabinet. Especially the selection of scott pruett. Donald trump picked to lead the epa. Heres more of my interview with carl icahn. Scott pruett of oklahoma and a Climate Change denier, scientists continue to disagree about the degree and extent of Global Warming and its connections to the act of mankind. I know you had your reservations about him first. You met with him four times, what changed your mind on him. Ive spoken to him a number of times. I feel very strongly on the business side here, in other words, i like to know what i know. I think ive made a lot of money and a lot of success by being almost obsessively concentrating on the areas that i really feel i understand. Until you make it into simplicity in choosing something, and the thing that i see with the epa is theyve done a horrible job in making perception of in making the perception that the government is antibusiness. And theyve done a lot of harm to businesses. In fact, at this point there are a number of refineries on the verge of bankruptcy because of the epas capricious actions. The epa has gone in and does does something the government is not supposed to do, i think they even would admit it but ignored what theyre doing, dictating a transfer of wealth from companies, and penalizing them for no reason i dont want to get into too much detail. Theyre going to refineries. Youre talking about ethanol requirements for example and mixing fuels and having to pay to another company if you dont have that, i understand that, and you also have interest in companies that this affects. Im wondering how you balance the impact on business, and their task of protecting the environment for generations to come. Yeah, well, look it, if you look at what im talking about, there is really no relation to changing the obligated party and the rfs. And people dont understand that. So capriciously, the epa has decided to penalize these businesses. Now, when you say iona refinally, its a small part of my portfolio. You could have criticized texaco shareholders. You could criticize me and say, you own texaco. Sure i do, im not telling you im doing it for charity, it also helps hundreds of thousands of Share Holders when we clean up over the years. To say that my input shouldnt be should be criticized because i own a refinery which is a small part of my portfolio, i want to clean that up. Let me go into the criticism you have. Im not here telling you im an environmental expert. There are other people that are more expert on that than i am i am not a critic of the rfs. I do believe that to some extent weve gone overboard concerning the environment, i leave that to the experts in that area. I will tell you what im an expert in, im an expert in seeing stupid things being done, im almost i have it on my twitter or one of those things i put out. Some people make a living studying artificial intelligence. I make it studying natural stupidity. And what the epa is doing is natural stupidity. Theyre ruining companies for stupid reasons. When you talk about stupidity on one end, in terms of an impact on business. You have to talk about whats stupid on the long run for our environment. The fact that this pick, who you did have questions about at first, is a Climate Change denier, even donald trump, the president elect said recently in an interview with the times, that he is leaning more toward believing there is a correlation between Global Warming and action, does it concern you at all what prue id believes . I talked to him, and i think he also has a view toward change of climate that is not complete denial. That said, i feel that he does understand the problems, i feel donald feels that way about it, i want someone in there that does understand the problems, but im not here to criticize or not criticize on the basis of Climate Change, i would say that the epa must be changed drastically. And you that belongs in, and hes going to do that, okay. Thats my whole point. I hear you, im on some of these other big picks, you tweeted, they will do what helps stimulate companies to invest. Whats the number one thing they can do to ensure that. I know you are not a supporter for example of repealing dodd frank wall street reform. What should they do . I warrant to say im not a supporter of completely changing it. Thats a big complicated question, there was a need for some of the dodd frank rules and in 08 was to blame for the Mortgage Backed securities. I want to make it clear, im not antiregulation. Im antithe stupidity of some of these regulations, and its just run amok. So to say that im antiall regulation is wrong. And i dont agree with that, but if you want to get back to yeah, what do you want to see minuchin and ross do most . Youre going to lower taxes. And i think it should be to stimulate business. Steve also agrees, and i actually, with me on one of the interviews, twice was nice enough to join me in talking with pruitt. He came to conclusions that at the beginning we doubted him, and then we came to the conclusion that he was good. And so i think steve will do for instance, if you want to get into the nittygritty, i think youre going to lower the ability to or increase the ability for depreciation, that will stimulate businesses to invest. Youre going to have more depreciation, youre going to lower taxes. Thats what a secretary 2resh ourer is going to be involved in, and thats going to be very positive for the economy. Do you think that those im not telling you theyre going to turn around tomorrow because of this. Theyre the simplistic and basic things you have to do. On that note, money saved, do you expect that and hope that will be invested back in these middle class american jobs . Ill tell you why. Because if you are stimulated by the government to invest in machinery and factoryies a ceo will do that. Today the ceo is scared. The reason i ask you, history is often a lesson for us in these things. The last time under the tax holiday back in 2004, a lot of that went back into share buy backs and making the rich richer. Theres no problem with that unless it comes at the cost of my answer to that is. Unless its going yeah, let me answer that, because youre talking to steve, and just talking generally, buy backs should be restricted a company should have to have a certain amount of cash before they do buy backs, a certain amount of excess cash, and they shouldnt be able to just and youre very right, they shouldnt be able to get a benefit, you know, because if youre getting lower taxes and because youre getting depreciation because you dont use them. You shouldnt be able to take that money and go buy back stock. The buy backs are done, look, certain companies, i want to see buy backs, i dont think the Company Knows how to use the cash and they got too much of it. In many cases you are right, you cant blame the ceos, right now, the ceo says, im going to go build a factory, and build machinery. And im going to have these guys coming in from the epa and drive me nuts. On the other hand ill buy back the stock, stock will go up. And the Investment Bankers tell us to do it, and im going to play golf the rest of my life with my 50 million i just made . Carl icahn, i do not expect you to play golf for the rest of your life. Not me. Im not saying im doing it, im saying the ceos look at it that way. This has been fascinating, i appreciate your time, thank you very much. Sure thing. Coming un, donald trump taking in a little football today. Attending the army navy game. Rudy giuliani has pulled himself out saz secretary of state. The president elect is with mike pompeo. We will talk before all of that ahead and what comes next for the incoming president and americas intelligence agencies. Youre live in the cnn newsroom. President elect donald trump is getting closer to naming his pick for secretary of state. That news expected sometime next week, cnn has learned, though, that rex untiler son is the leading candidate right now. Hes the ceo of exxon mobil, and has never served in government many he has ties to Vladimir Putin, ties that have caused some republicans to raise concerns. All of this as trump slams agencies about meddling in this years election. The cia is concluding that the russian interference with the election was specifically to help donald trump get elected. These are the same people that said zam had weapons of mass destruction the election ended a long time ago. Its now time to move on and make America Great again hes Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution lets jump into this, because trump and the rnc are casting doubts on this intel from our intelligence agencies, and theyre doing two things through this statement that i read from trumps team. Either hes questioning the voer assetty of u. S. Intelligence and what their officials found, or hes questioning the motives of these intelligence officials and whether theyre politicize things. Do both concern you . Well, i think weve got the best intelligence agencies in the world, and i think we have great gathering, great analysis, and obviously i think we want to be very careful about making assertions about what the Intelligence Community is doing. Certainly we want to be careful about what their intentions are, i understand theres some evidence in dispute here, in terms of what happened with the hack itself. But i think pretty much everyones agreed, the russians have incredible hacking capability. Incredible ability for cyber warfare. Its something we have to be careful about. This administration took far too rosie a picture of the russians in the first couple years. This administration and the next one treat the russians with clear eyed sort of intentions. And analyze this clearly. Is that what you see the president elect doing right now . Theyre making the political argument about the cia. The much better argument for them to make is theres evidence were not sure about. Lets get to the bottom of this and see whats going on, rather than attacking the agencies themselves. The more productive thing to do, that all americans would agree upon, lets figure out what happened here, and get to the bottom of it. The ceo of exxon mobil is on the top of trumps list for secretary of state pick. Let me read you a quote. Friends and associates said few u. S. Citizens are closer to mr. Putin than mr. Tillerson. Who has known him since he represented exxons interests in russia. We know he has a big oil deal with a player in the area. I have obviously concerns of reports of his relationship with Vladimir Putin, whos a thug and a murderer. But thats the we will have hearings and they will be examined, its the time to make up your mind as to whether to vote yes or no. What kind of questions would you ask rex untiler son that would make you feel comfortable about a role like that. His view of Vladimir Putin and his role in the world. The fact that the leader of the opposition was murdered on the orders i believe, in the shadow of the kremlin. What concerns are legitimate, and what concerns are not. When it comes to the man who will deal not only with russia, china, iran, et cetera, are you concerned about he has in his corporate role to russia. I think senator mccains tone was exactly right, were going to have hearings if hes the nominee, theyll have hearings before various committees to assess whether mr. Untiler son is the right all these issues will be explored. The mere fact that hes involved in a business which is a large Multinational Corporation that may have ties to folks in russia. That i dont think is a problem. Thats not it, he got the order of friendship from russia two years ago, he also spoke publicly in 2014 at an annual Shareholder Meeting against some of the u. S. Sanctions against russia, saying, we have to be very careful here about who this really impacts. Its not just that. I recognize that, and those are issues, to the extent that there are those issues, theyre going to be explored in the that in my mind would be wrongheaded. I think we have taken a much better line toward the russian regime in the recent years of the Obama Administration than we did when we tried that silly reset the first couple of years. So these issues are going to get explored, poppy in the hearings, and well see what happens. Loni, have to leave it there. Thank you for joining me. Thank you. Coming up, live in the cnn newsroom, well switch gears and talk about this. Imagine a World Without these beautiful creatures. A World Without giraffes. Now its stuck in my head. The tallest land mammal is at risk of facing extinction after suffering a devastating decline in numbers. The world lost 40 of our giraffes in the last 30 years. This coming from the International Union from conversation of nature. Cnn goes on safari to find out how experts are trying to conserve the giraffe population. A trip to nairobi can bring you facetoface with one of the most iconic creatures, the giraffe. These giraffes are raised in a controlled environment where school kids and adults can learn more about them in close quarters. Hello, betty. I love a tall girl. So youve heard that a bunch of elephants are called a herd. And that a bunch of lions are called a pride. Now what do you call a bunch of giraffes . Theyre called a tower. And they certainly make me feel very small. But scientists have found what theyre calling a devastating trend. Giraffe populations have decreased almost 40 in the last 30 years. Leading the International Union for conservation of nature to classify them as under threat of extinction. These animals, which are so big, so visible, yet their decline has gone largely unnoticed until now. We focus so much on big species like elephants, sometimes the rhinoceros, sometimes the lions, and we forget about these tall gentle giants. A drive through Nairobi International park ends at one region of the horizon. Africas urban landscape is eating up more of what used to be the giraffes habitat. All over the continent, cities are growing with increasing numbers of people, and the giraffes are running out of grazing space. Part of our planning should put into account we have wildlife and wildlife that requires big spaces, and requires specific habitats. So in the planning is where we are calling for the planners to include wildlife as one of the land uses. Saving giraffes will not be a simple task. Conflict, habitat degradation, poaching have all contributed to the decline in giraffe numbers. An ancient fable has it a long time ago the giraffes were the soothe sayers. They could lift their heads to the clouds, look back and see the past. Look forward and see the future. But one thing no one, not even the giraffes could have predicted is that by 2016, their numbers could have dropped, and they could be facing what the conservationists are now calling a silent extinction.
