Black church service. You see trump there dancing and clapping beside omarosa, who is also a pastor. Lets take a look at what played out outside the church. Trump is not right. Hes a racist. Hes a bigot. Hes a ma sgynist. He made one of his strongest pitches yet to the Africanamerican Community telling the congregation his words were his own and straight from his heart. Lets take a listen. For centuries, the africanamerican church has been the conscience of our country. So true. Its from the pws and pulpits and christian teachings of black churches all across this land that the Civil Rights Movement lifted up its soul and lifted up the soul of our nation. Its from these pews that our nation has been inspired for better moral character, a deeper concern for mankind, and spirit of charity and unity that binds us altogether. And we are bound together. And i see that today. The africanamerican Faith Community has been one of gods greatest gifts to america and to its people. Theres perhaps no action our leaders can take that would do more to heal our country and support our people than to provide a greater platform to the black churches and churchgoers. Trumps former rival ben carson gave him a tour of his childhood home. Carson defended trumps comments in the past about the black community, including trump calling on black voters saying what do you have to lose . If you ask him about those comments, though, and allow him to explain it, youll see he says very readily i have a lot of africanamerican friends who are very wealthy who do very well. And i know the majority of black people dont live that way. So in addition to reaching out to black voters in detroit specifically, he also reached out, made an appeal to detroit as a whole. Listen to this. I want to make america prosperous for everyone. I want to make this city the economic envy of the world. We can do that. We can do that again. Factories everywhere, new roads and bridges, new schools. Especially schools. And new hope. Joining me now is the mayor of detroit, also a Hillary Clinton supporter. Thank you so much for being with me tonight. Thanks for having me on tonight, poppy. Its good to have you. Look, as you know, i have spent amount of time in detroit. Right. Look, the people of detroit, the schools need help, you know, businesses need help in terms of creating jobs. No question about that. The question is how do you best do that, right . I wonder, even as a clinton supporter, are you glad to see donald trump come today and tour that neighborhood with dr. Ben carson and make the remarks at the church . Whats your reaction to it . The reaction is when are you going to give us a solution . Anybody can say that in cities in this country we have too much poverty, we have too much crime, and the schools are in bad shape. Everybody knows that. What are you going to do about it. And still we havent heard. And i was hoping today that donald trump would not just describe the problem, that he would offer some solutions. Again, incident was nothing but reading somebody elses words off a page. So to be fair here, he said right at the beginning of his remarks, these are my words. These are my remarks and they come from the heart. Wait. Poppy, lets be real. You saw the release here. They gave him the questions ahead of the time for the interview. Then even the question of do you believe in the bible he had consultants scripting his answers. So i dont believe for a second when youre speaking from the heart, lieu at people in the eye, you talk to them directly. You dont read off a piece of paper in words that sound foreign to you. To be fair, mayor, before we move on, campaigns on both sides were off script talking points for their candidates ahead of interviews. But i want to move on and get to the facts here. Youre a clinton supporter, Hillary Clinton supporter. Have you heard from her and her camp specific solutions that you think would really help detroit and give your city what it needs . Not only have i heard from her, i spent hours in the room with her. And when you talk to Hillary Clinton, when you talk about what we need to do to get children to learn in the classroom, it is something she has been deeply engaged in since she was young. When you talk about creating job is opportunities, she has very specific plans for apprenticeships and plans for giving Financial Support to businesses who hire people in those apprentices. She has specific plans to rebuild the infrastructure of this country and creating job opportunities. She has plans for making college affordable. She has a whole range of ideas how you take people who need a chance to move up. So you read this op ed im sure in the Detroit Free Press about trumps visit. Part of the op ed said, look, hes not appealing to black voters. He is just trying to convince white voters that he is not racist and court their vote. Do you believe that was the cause of his trip . You know, it feels like a new season of the apprentice. He basically ran a primary campaign of bigotry and attacked all different kind of groups. Now he realizes he cant win in the general. So we go to phoenix and talk to latin latinos. And then he goes up and talks to africanamericans in detroit. Next you will see him in a citizenship class for immigrants. It comes off as so sincere. If you want to be sincere, tell us specifically what youre going to do. Thats what we are still waiting for. So when you look at the city of detroit, mayor, there have been, since 1962, every mayor of detroit has been a democrat. And donald trump in his remarks leading up to today the last few weeks, has said speaking to africanamerican voters, the democrats have failed you. I will not fail you. You need a change. What do you have to lose . Detroit fell into bankruptcy on the watch of a democratic mayor. Democrat since 1962. What do you say to critics who point to that, mayor . Absolutely. The local elected officials of detroit bear a measure of responsibility. The manufacturing leaders who lost a lot of our Manufacturing Base bear significant responsibility. We probably have got 25,000 vacant houses from the National Housing crisis in 2008 and 2009 that we are dealing with today that drove people out of their homes with bad mortgages that came at the federal level. Our cities didnt get here because one fern did something wrong. Whats happened is that we have not as a country valued the cities. There have been federal policies from freeway expansions to low mortgages and now interestingly enough the mill lessenals are moving back to the city. They will come and say cities are important. Hillary clinton believes that. Im still waiting to hear, other than whose fault it is and way you should be mad, i want to hear what he is going to do to help the city. I have seen some of the incredible turnaround from the millenials, stories that dont always make the headlines. Before i let you go, lets talk about race. You are the first white mayor of detroit since 1974. And, look, it is a predominantly Africanamerican Community when you talk about detroit proper. Do you think voters in your city care less about race and more about lets get something done. Lets stop talk building race and lets talk about solutions. I got elected in a landslide. I did it by going into the same places that donald trump went. Except instead of reading a bunch of prepared statements, i looked people in the eye and said heres what were going to do about the abandoned houses, the crime, streetlights out. And people responded. And i do think that in the city now we are seeing a comeback. Jobs are coming back. People are coming back. We are embracing all religions, all colors, all backgrounds. Everybody is being welcomed in the city of detroit now. Even donald trump. Mayor dug an, thank you for coming on tonight. My thanks to you for talking about that and, you know, its always important to highlight some of the great things that are happening in detroit that we dont always seem to headline. Thank you, sir. Always great to talk to you, pop. Straight ahead, well talk to a donald trump supporter who was in the church to hear what trump said. Well get that reaction ahead. Also, Mother Teresa set to become a saint tomorrow. But theres some controversy about this. Really, there is. Why is that . Well dig into that. We just heard detroits democratic mayor criticize Donald Trumps visit to his city today. Mayor mike dug an said he did not offer specific solutions for detroit, and that is what his city needs. Earlier today, donald trump made a visit to a predominantly black church in detroit and spoke to the congregation. Afterwards, he accompanied dr. Ben carson to carsons childhood home in southwest detroit. Thats get a reaction to the mayor. A trump supporter. Thank you for being here. What did you make of what mayor the duggan said. He said i didnt hear any specifics. He has given them. Today in the church was more about uplifting the Africanamerican Community. He hasnt given specifics about how he would help detroit. He has talked about j1 visas, where 1,000 Foreign Workers come in excuse me, 100,000, and work seasonal jobs. He said he wants to convert them for a job bank for the innercity. Thats one. Number two, i think most importantly is school choice. We heard him tout that over and over again in speeches. We need to give options to schools. 2. 1 trillion from overseas and pumping them into the communities. He has given the specifics. I think today was more about saying how important the black Church Community has been to elevating our society as a nation. Two followup questions. The visa that you are talking about, they are the visas that were used to bring Seasonal Workers to Donald Trumps palm springs resort. They were the same visas. But he did advertise to fill those jobs. They were not filled by american citizens. So he did open it up to foreigners. Thats what the law stands now. Thats the j1 visas. They want to pump the jobs specifically into inner cities. Lets talk about the remarks at the church. This was a different trump that we heard certainly. Incident was a much softer tone, thats for sure. It was scripted remarks. He said i wrote these. These are from my heart. I think what detroits mayor is saying is that thats that. But we need to hear and see specifics. Do you think donald trump would you advise him to say on his next trip to one of these cities struggling so much, go out and spend the entire day, sit in a roundtable or town hall and ask specifically what is your struggle and specifically what can i do . I think today was a really good start. I heard a donald trump supporter sitting in the church and she said she hopes for a town hall. That will be a great next step. I would contrast to Hillary Clinton. Where is she today . Shes been absent from the trail for quite a few days. The mayor pointed out a number of specifics he has gotten from the Clinton Campaign. I guess what im asking, is it doing enough . I think so. We like to focus on the one line, what do you have to lose . I didnt focus that. We just played minutes. This is an amazing day. Im here to learn. Our political system has failed he focused on jobs and education. Were not just focusing on what do you have to lose. If you listen to his rallies the last two weeks, you will hear many specifics. I have 20 specifics that he has given in the speech. He has given specifics. Hillary clinton, who was asked by chris wallace, what are you going to do differently from obama to elevate the economy. She said she would create more green jobs. Im sorry, thats not for our community. One of the problems with detroit manufacturing jobs have left. It is because of trade deals like tpp which Hillary Clinton hailed as the gold standard. When you look at detroit, the decline of so many jobs in the automotive industry, it is not all because of trade deals. Some certainly is. Theres no question. A lot of it is because of technology and automation. Theres also a question about no matter who is president , those jobs arent going to come back because technological advances have made them unnecessary. Right. Who will be better for bringing back manufacturing jobs, Hillary Clinton or donald trump . Donald trump has made this his message from day one. He talked about moving one of his factories to mexico. He wants to make sure the corporate inversions dont happen, where they move overseas and take advantage of our laws. Who is hurt . People in the inner cities who cant find jobs who are highly qualified but cant find them because they dont exist. As our previous guest said, as you heard, don brown from cleveland, said he has to have a town hall. Is that the next step . I agree with donna. I love what we are seeing. We saw the roundtable where he listened to his africanamerican council, which he has been doing for a long time going back to the primary. I agree the town hall would be a natural next step. It would seem like the exact type of business Hillary Clinton might have a problem with. There are students who take out loans to pay for an expensive degree from a forprofit institution only to find little support once they actually enroll. Or they graduate and discover that when it comes to getting the job they were promised their degree is not worth what they thought. But you wont find Hillary Clinton saying one word about laureate university. While she was traveling the world as secretary on of state, her husband was traveling the world and being paid a fortune as the honorary chancellor of Laureate International universities. I traveled to 14 laureate universities in a dozen countries. Bill clinton was paid 17. 6 million by laureate from 2010 until 2015 when his contract was up and he stepped down. Huge crowds are expected to gather as pope francis holds a special ceremony at the vatican for the late Roman Catholic nun. Mother teresa, as you know, devoted to helping the poor, the sick, and the marginalized. First off, how exactly does one become a saint . A look how the process works. Nearly 2,000 years after the first pope peter, the Catholic Church put halos on 10,000 saints. They are the ones you have likely heard of. St. Patrick. St. Valentine. And thousands of others that only the pie us may know. Saint vladimir. To get the title of saint, contenders need to pass a few tests. The first, they have to be dead. Usually for five years. But some have to wait in line a little longer. St. Bede was declared a saint 1,000 years after his death. Dying may be the easy part here you have to perform two miracles. Candidates must answer prayers from their heavenly perch. The church believes Mother Teresa just that when a man with brain tumors and a woman with stomach cancer were in explicably cured after praying with the nun. And sister marie was cured of parkinsons. The church says you officially have a miracle on your hands. If you pass all the tests, the pope will induct you into one of the most sacred clubs and in the end grant you a halo. Well, after tomorrow Mother Teresa will officially be known as saint teresa of calcutta. Lets welcome father beck. Lets begin with tomorrow. Tomorrow at the vatican, pope francis will canonize Mother Teresa. They are expecting hundreds of thousands. 100,000 tickets already gone. Hundreds more will line the streets for this. There will be a mass. The ceremony itself is rather simple. It is simply naming this person as a person of virtue and holiness who now resides with godded in heaven and is therefore named a saint. If you think of perfection, you think of Mother Teresa, right . But yet there is controversy around her becoming a saint. Why . Yeah. Well, not everybody thought she was so perfect. Remember, she was a tough lady. And the atheist christopher hitch ins did a documentary in 1994. He called her hells angel. Thats the name of the documentary. She spoke against abortion, against contraception. He thought that was wrong. Her point was if the countries were doing more for the poor there would not have been an issue. He felt that shouldnt happen. She took money from corrupt dictators. And her point was, look, he took it from the poor. If he gives it to me and i give it back to the poor, im going to do that. She wasnt at the head of an ngo. She started a religious community. She didnt live by the rules of how it looked, how it didnt look. She didnt care how it looked. She just cared about the effect on the poor and who needed it most. You pointed it out as the years. The long period of time, 50 odd years, where she lived and questioned gods impact on her life. Was god really with her, sort of living in darkness. The dark knight of the soul. She felt that. She felt was she really doing gods work . Was he present to her . She believed, and why she did what she did, the suffering were christ, jesus. So the dying on the streets of calcutta, she would pick those people up and take them to her hospices. She believed she was ministering to christ. She didnt have an infrastructure. That was not her point. She said i minister to christ today. This is how i do it. Others felt she should have done it another way. You have a funny story about the london supermarket. There are two. She went into a london supermarket with her and her sisters. They loaded up the carts, over 500 worth of supplies and food. They got in this long line of people. She got to the front and said we have no money. We would like the people in the line to pay for this food because we are giving it to a good cause. She stopped the line. They looked at her not knowing what to do. She raised the 500 and paid for the food. The Indian Government gave her a free rail ticket to travel around india. She said i would like a plane ticket too for the indian airline. They balked at that. She said ill do Flight Attendant work in order to pay for my passage. She worked the system. She was shrewd women. She was gods pitbull. Is that a title she would embrace . No. She wouldnt have embraced that. But with a smile she got what she wanted. With a smile she got what she wanted. You catch more bees with honey, right . Sometimes with vinegar too. What final thought on what you remember most and the world should remember as she is canonized. She didnt want power, prestige. If there was a comfortable chair, she would sit in the uncomfortable one. It wasnt to be a mart martyr. She lived according to gods values. Thats what makes her a saint, holy. People say, how did she do that . Because its not what our Natural Inclination would be. We will see history made tomorrow at the vatican. It plans to ship a lot of jobs from indiana down to mexico. So cnn money headed to indiana to talk to the labor unions and the workers who this affects. The central question, does trump did trump convince them . Does he have the right plan . From our production to indianapolis to monterrey, mexico. Indianapolis is busy, hosting conventiongoers is and business meetings. But the historic engine of indianas economy turns just outside the city center. In manufacturing neighborhoods where factory workers live and Union Members gather in halls like this one for united Steel Workers local 1999. This union represents some workers at carrier, a unit of industrial giant. You may have heard the name carrier before. Carrier. Anybody from carrier . Carrier says theyre leaving. If youre tired of seeing carrier leaving your state. An airconditioning manufacturing in indiana. They make furnaces, not airconditioners. He makes 20 an hour connected to a gas valve on heating furnaces found in homes across the country. We take pride in what we do. When we see a carrier furnace in someones house, were like we built that. We had a hand in this. And we still do to this day. Which t. J. Says happened a few months ago. The best way to stay competitive and protect the business long term is to move production from our facility in indianapolis to monterrey, mexico. They are taking our livelihood away. Just shocked. Shock and awe and confusion and upset. Ive been here 14 years. The labor is much cheaper in mexico, where minimum wage is about 4 a day. The trade bill is directly influenced on this deal is nafta put in place by president bill clinton. Why do you think carrier made the decision now . The shareholders were having a hard time with the profits that they were getting. This is all driven by what . Corporate greed and unfair trade. Lets take those one at a time. First, unfair trade. A rallying cry of Donald Trumps campaign. The single worst trade deal ever done. Its called nafta. But business researcher carol rogers said it is not that simple. I view it as cutting off your nose to spite your face. Because then were not going to be able to sell our stuff outside the United States. So trump is wrong . I dont think so, yes. She points at the numbers. Exports from indiana have doubled in 20 years. Even when adjusting for inflation. Thats more than 10 of the states economy. Plus, all the jocks the exports support. Indianas biggest customers, canada and mexico. Free trade advocates argue that you want to be selling to billions of people around the world. Not just the 320 million customers in the u. S. International business is actually an important part of american businesses being successful. Jennifer is an executive at cummi cummins, a major manufacturer and employer in the state. 70 of the product that we produce here gets exported. In terms of the places around the world where this kind of machinery and these kinds of engines could be assembled, where are they . Obviously europe may be one region of the world. Where else . India. They certainly have the capability to do that. India may have really cheap labor compared to u. S. That is one element of any manufacturing cost. Has your quality, efficiency rate. We cant compete with that hourly rate. No point suggesting that we could. Bottom line, america has to be innovative. The country cant compete on wages alone. That means giving up certain jobs. The benefit should be cheaper goods. Its been happening for years. I havent seen where it makes the goods cheaper. The companies are making more profits. Is it trade deals or corporate greed moving jobs to mexico . They had an operating profit of just under 3 billion in 2015. And when cnn money asked carrier about the move, the Company Provided this statement. We must continue to protect our business in a relentlessly competitive global marketplace. To soften the blow, the Company Plans a slew of retraining and Educational Opportunities for employees losing their jobs. So the question is, what will happen to the 1,400 workers at carrier who will be laid off . The economy is going to be able to absorb those workers. As of july, more than 3,000 manufacturing job postings in indiana, according to the state. Carrier workers are really in a theyre in a state of disappointment. They qualify for the trade systems, retraining, monetary support beyond unemployment checks. We tend to think not enough people take advantage of it. I dont know why people wouldnt take advantage of it. Just angry and frustrated, right . And i can appreciate theyre angry and frustrated, but also think they need to think about themselves as having skills. They can improve their competitiveness. Chuck is not convinced. What they have is the kwaufrgzs on some of these jobs youre creating you have to be able to say, do you want french fries with that . Thats what it comes down to. Wages. How do working people in america make more money, and how does america ensure everyone gets benefit out of globalization . We have to vote. People get caught up on issues, guns, god, and gays. I always believe marriage is between one man and one woman. We are going to be so strong with our second amendment. Believing in god is so important. These guys are voting with their wallets. Im going to do this. Im going to do that. You didnt really tell me why. You say all the stuff about jobs. But i mean, this guy is an entertainer. Hes a clown. Where is he at . Hes got the money. As Tropical Storm hermine makes its way up the eastern seaboard tonight, there are growing concerns that the standing water left behind, especially in florida, will become breeding grounds for mosquitoes carrying the zika virus. Mosquitoes carrying that virus were found in miami beach this week, the first discovery of zikacarrying mosquitoes in the continental United States. Dr. Sanjay gupta has more. Reporter poppy, in many ways this wasnt unexpected. I think for some time weve known that there are what are known as locally transmitted cases of zika. And just to reiterate, what that means is that most of the people who have had zika infections in the United States acquired those infections by traveling to a company where zika was circulating, getting the infection, and bringing it back. What we learned is there are people not travelrelated but still getting the zika infection. Once they look at these people and figured out, have you traveled, has anyone you know traveled, the answer was college back no. Thats when they knew that it wasnt from traveling. What happens is the mosquito comes in, bites somebody who has the zika virus in their system. After some period of time that mosquito can then transmit the virus to someone else. Theyve trapped those mosquitoes and found them. Its still recommended that pregnant women dont travel to these areas unless they absolutely need to. Well continue to get more information, poppy. As we get that, well bring it to you. Sanjay, thank you so much. Next, back to politics, and donald trump taking his message to africanamerican voters in detroit today. After being criticized by some initially for not focusing on minority groups, and later for speaking to black communities but not in them, the Trump Campaign took him directly to detroit today where he attended a service at a predominantly black church. It was not clear at the outset whether or not trump would address the congregation. But he did, he spoke in words he said were his own and that he said were straight from the heart. Listen.
