Im poppie harlow live with you this afternoon from cleveland. You are watching cnns special live coverage of the Republican National convention. In two days, all eyes will be right here on cleveland for one of the biggest political events of the year. The Republican National convention. It is expected to bring in 50,000 more people to this city and the nation got its first look at the gop ticket in full today. Donald trump and his new running mate mike pence appearing together this morning in new york. While there are reports that trump waivered on his decision whether or not to pick the indiana governor, our dana bash reporting exactly that trump insists mike pence was his first choice. I found the leader who will help us deliver a safe society, and a prosperous real low Prosperous Society for all americans. Indiana governor mike pence was my first choice. I have admired the work he has done, especially in the state of indiana. Lets go live to Florida Governor rick scott. He endorsed donald trump. He joins me now. Thank you for being with me sir. I look forward to seeing you next week, poppie. Its going to be a great convention. I know you are on your way here to cleveland. We will all be here. We already are. You are taking the stage. You are one of the big speakers. Have you written your speech yet. I have written the speech ive been practicing the speech. Im really excited to be able to do this. Im going to do everything i can of course to make sure donald trump is the next president of the United States. Its going to be exciting to be at the convention. How does one practice their Convention Speech . Are you Walking Around the house practicing in front of the 2005 and kids in in the bathroom mirror. And whats the main message on a more serious note, whats the main message. You are absolutely right. Im practicing at my house. I am a business man who ran six years ago to be governor of florida. This is a significant opportunity for me. Everything im going to be talking about is why donald trump needs to be the next president of the United States. We need somebody that is going to sit there and folk to us every day on how we create american jobs, how we destroy isis, how were going to build our military. Those are things that are most important to me and i think most important to donald trump. Lets talk about his vp pick. He picks mike pence, a total social conservative to try to help him with that base. At the same time, dana bash has reported up until thursday, midnight trump was wraifring, he asked his team can he go back on the decision after he called and offered it. That his gut said Chris Christie. But the decision he made is the decision in line with what his advisors and what his family wanted. They saw mike pence as the safe bet. They wanted that. Do you see this choice, not going with his gut as a more president ial trump . First of all i think its a great choice. Ive known donald and mike for a long time. Mike is a successful governor. I clearly have a bias for governors. He has experience in the executive branch, ten years plus in congress. He knows he has relationships there, he knows how congress works. He is going to focus on first how do we get donald trump elected . Then once elected how do we implement Donald Trumps agenda. Thats not what i asked. What i asked is this is is a more pregnant choice . The fact that donald trump shows donald trump ignored his gut on this one. Poppie, i dont know the behind the scenes. I just know mike is a good choice. Chris christie and a good friend. Im sure Chris Christie will be part of the administration. There is going to be a lot of us that want to do everything we can to help donald trump succeed and get his agenda. We have got to get this country turned around, destroy isis, build up our military. Jeb bush penned an op ed in the washington post. Heres part of it. I havent decided how ill vote in november, whether i will support the libbertarian ticket or writein candidate. No matter how you spin it this is an example of a party divided. How does it not help Hillary Clinton when a prominent fellow republican is voting for someone else . Look the big differences here are not between different republicans. But the big difference is between trump and Hillary Clinton. Trump is a business person, Hillary Clinton never had a job. Thats exactly what were saying from jeb bush. Donald trump was successful in my home state. He won in florida, because he talked about what is important to americans. Jobs, american jobs. He was focused on destroying isis. Thats why he won. Thats what this election is about. There is a clear difference between hillary, the career politician, who had her chance to destroy isis and failed. Donald trump is going to destroy isis, going to create american jobs, he is going to bring them back, he is and going to build our military. All right. I want to talk about language, and rhetoric. When you talk about other floridians in government positions and you look at marco rubio, senator marco rubio, jeb bush trump used very negative language toward them. Little marco, low energy, jeb bush. Is that language that you are comfortable with . We know you are Backing Trump but do you want to see a change in the language going forth . That language you were comfortable with . Every candidate when they run is different. Weaver all different and we all run our campaigns differently. In theent i mean look, donald trump is direct. He is bluptd, hes you know, he is a different candidate. But you know, he got his message across. And Americans Trust him because they know weve got to stop being weve got to change what were doing because what were doing is not working. Barack obamas policies have not worked. We need jobs. We need american jobs. Not saying radical islam is a mistake. Weve got to have a president thats going to say there is radical islam out there. Look at my state. We had 49 people murderrd because of an isis inspired terrorist in my home state. We have got to have a president thats going to stay were going to stop there and were going to talk about this is radical islam. On that point and im glad you bring it up because we do need to talk about the terror attack here. This follows the horrific attack in france. 84 people died. The attack in orlando, 49 deaths. In bangladesh, we saw hostages held at a restaurant, 20 people killed. I mean, there is an evolving state of terrorism in this world. And when it comes to your state, governor, florida, what is florida doing differently right now to try to prevent the next orlando . Poppy, we lost a journalist in 2014. We lost 49 people a month ago and we have individuals in the hospital. Then we had a young lady that was in bangladesh killed. This terrorism is impacting my state. What im doing is coordinating all of our activities between the federal, state and local Law Enforcement, making sure they are sharing information as to the extent they can, get people to work together. Because, look, we have to understand that terrorism is not just in a foreign country. Terrorism is in florida. Its in the United States. Those attacks are attacks on americans and on our way of life. I want a president thats going to say, i am going to, no, ifs, ands or buts about it. Donald trump is going to be very direct. He will wipe isis off the face of the earth. And thats what i want. Poppy, go through you sit there like i did with those families. I sat down with the families and watched them cry and cried with them about losing their loved ones. When you sit down and do that you want a president thats going to say this is radical islam, this is terrorism, this has got to stop. Governor, i sat with those families when i was in paris after the horrific attack in november. And i hear you a hundred percent. And those that are on the fence teal me, especially here in cleveland, folks i talked to last night, some of them say i like the language im hearing from donald trump on defeating isis but i dont have the specifics, i dont know how he is going to do it and i think Hillary Clinton has more experience on that front. What do you say to them . Are you concerned there arent specifics yet . Poppy, look at hillarys experience. She failed. She was she was the secretary of state of the Obama Administration. They failed. They failed. They failed. They failed. They failed. I want to give donald trump the chance because heres the guy why are Business People successful . Because they are focused on the result. Donald trump will focus on the result and get the result. Hillary clinton will not focus on it. She wont talk about it. I hear you that Hillary Clinton is i hear you that Hillary Clinton is part and parcel of the Obama Administration strategy although she was more hawkish she said she would have a nofly zone over syria. I hear that point. However, what about the specifics from donald trump . We are in the week when he will be named your partys man for the job, for the white house. At what point do we need more specifics from his camp on how he will carry that out, how he will destroy isis . Sure. Im sure as a Campaign Goes on like a lot of issues, there will be more specifics. I assume by both candidates. But when . Weve been hearing that for a long time. When . You know, im sure it will happen over the next, you know, next few months. It has to. But look you have a choice. You have a business person that has success and you have Hillary Clinton who had the opportunity and absolutely failed. I will take i will take the person that is a business person that is focused on destroying isis and says he will he will say radical islam. I mean right now the Obama Administration, Hillary Clinton, they will not focus on it. Theyve had their chance. Im ready for a change. Imed were for somebody that says i am going to make this a priority. Ill figure it out. Rick scott thank you so much for being with us. Just for all our viewers i sat down last night with a group of female voters here in cleveland. We talked about the Terror Threat and what they want from the candidates. Well hear directly from that on exactly what the governor was just talking about. Thanks to rick scott. You are live in the cnn newsroom. You heard rick scott, floridas governor backing donald trump. But there are still many republicans who want to block the gop from nominating him as the candidate for the white house. Also this. After the vicious terror attack in nice, france, how will contenders for the white house make their case for who they think will do the best job of keeping america safe . It has been just a matter of hours since military element tried to stage a coup, a coup that failed but their attempt to take over the ergodan president. The turkish president is now back in control and he is pointeding the finger blaming one man for leading that coup attempt, a man he wants arrested. The challenges, that man lives in the United States. He is a 75yearold cleric who exiled himself to pennsylvania of all places in the late 1990s. Thats him right there. Back in turkey, the street violence and did overnight gunfire killed at least 161 people. More than 1,000 people were injured. Our ian lee is live in istanbul tonight. Ian it is now past 11 00 p. M. There. 24 hours ago, absolute mayhem. We were all glued to the television. Couldnt believe what was going on. Cnn turk, our television station over there, at one point was was turned off, was evacuated in the midst of being on the air. Thing have changed so dramatically on the streets of istanbul. Would you call it calm at this point . As far as any sort of potential coup or aftermath is concerned, its definitely calmed down. You are right, 24 hours ago there was gunfire and explosions echoing throughout istanbul. And right now behind me you can hear, these are the supporters of ergodan coming out in the Thunder Showers to here in taksim square, a call that was made by ergodan and his administration to get their supporters, a show of force against the coup to show that he has the will of the people. In the meantime, they have been rounding up a number of people, 2800 military officers, various ranks have been arrested and 2700 judiciary officials have been removed. So a crackdown has begun there as well. I want to talk about the man. Lets pull him up on the screen so people can talk about the man at the center of a lot of this. This is a muslim cleric who lives in exile here in the United States. His name is fethullah gulen. He was a friend of ergodan. The two had a major falling out. Ergodan is pointing fingers at him saying you insighted this, you start this sooup attempt from your home in the United States. What more do we know . Thats right. They had a close friendship, a major falling out. Now ergodan basically using gulen of being behind any sort of unrest and trying to undermine his administration. Thats when we see the arrests of not only the military but also the removal of those judges. That is significant because he is known, gulen is known as to having influence within the judiciary, within the police forces. Weve seen a crackdown there as well. Although gulen is denying it. He is saying it could have been anyone behind the coup. Ian lee live for us in istanbul tonight. We will update you on that story as it develops. Thank you so much, ian. Coming up next, this. [ taps ] memorials across europe for victims of thursdays horrific terror attack in southern france. A child now identified in a nice hapt. And relatives searching for his parents. Donald trump i love the old days; you know what they used to do with guys like that when they were in a place like this . Theyd be carried out on a stretcher, folks. And you can tell them to go f themselves i could stand in the middle of 5th avenue and shoot somebody and i wouldnt lose any voters, okay . Its like incredible. Im Hillary Clinton and i approve this message. All right i want to take you live to france. Today memorials are underway for the hundreds and hundreds of those injured and the 84 lives taken. Still youve got hundreds of victims recovering from thursdays truck attack in the hospital. My colleague brook bald within is live for us in nice tonight. Brook . Poppy, good evening. Again, before we get to the feel of nice two days later. I mean it was about this time two nights ago when this entire promenade was packed with the vice mayor quoted me Something Like 60,000 families watching the fireworks, make taking in the music. First let me get to the information we have on the attack and the why. First, french officials are saying if this attacker was radcalizes. Thats still an f, then the french administrator says it happened very, very quickly. He was not on anybodys radar. It was an unknown. Also today weve heard from the isis media wing. Yes, they have that. They posted a statement claiming the attacker was a soldier in their cause no. Proof of that. But that is at least their statement today. They are not claiming responsibility per se, but again calling him a soldier. Also today france is calling for volunteers to help maintain military strength. The country is asking all french people and patriots to join on the reserves to help monitor roads, and secure the border and really just to maintain the security that they have had to have since the Charlie Hebdo attack last january. Back here on the promenade just checking the time. Its just about 10 30 at night. And there are lots and lots of people out and about. Many people here on holiday on vacation. They are mingling, trying to enjoy themselves. They are eating dinner, having some champagne on a weekend just about 48 hours since this truck, you know, careened through this crowd. Just back this way on this pedestrian walkway right along the gorgeous mediterranean ocean killing 84 people. Sit with that number for a moment. 84 people, including ten children. And majored more than 200 others. I think brooke one of the images that stands out most in my mind, seeing that from afar, is when someone described a program, a baby carriage, left in the aftermath of the attack. There are so many children right now fighting for their lives in the hospital, arent there . Five of them right now are in intensive care. Im glad you asked about the kids because it is these crushed strollers that you cant they are Haunting Images from this promenade. Five in intensive care. Of the 30 people admitted two nights ago to the hospital i can tell you a third of them are under the age of 5. 5 years of age. Ten kids have been operated on. No one no limb was amputated but you know, just to underscore what weve been hearing from the crews who have been at the hospitals, these doctors its one thing sadly some doctors in france are familiar with responding to terror attacks and guns and a bullet wound is considered more a less a clean wound. When you are dealing with not only being hit by a truck ramming into you, but then being trampled by people fleer for their lives it created a different kind of injury that doctors here in nice werent at all anticipating. This is the site of the 2016 Republican National convention. And as we await hearing from donald trump, who will take the stage here on thursday a setback for the never trump republicans here. They failed to change party rules that would have allowed them to reopen the nomination. While they may have lost that battle they are not totally giving up their fight and their message. Lets bring in steve lonnigan, part of the Never Trump Movement and a former ted cruz backer. Also joining me former rnc chief of staff mike shields. Thank you gentlemen both for being here. I appreciate it very much. Steve weve had you on many times in the past. Yes. And weve talked about never trump. Paul man for the came on new day yesterday. I was sitting in for allison with chris comcomo. And i saw him say never trump is never mo. You say, sir . The never trumps movement is different than our effort to unbind our begts to go in and vote their conscious and pick the best candidate capable of defeating Hillary Clinton and upholding our party platform. If Donald Trumps our pack will support the republican ticket. Thats minor clarification but kind of important. The bottom line is a huge effort has taken place to attempt to unbind the begts. Rnc has used all their power and clout to make sure that doesnt happen. Thats what we expected. I knew we had a high goal to reach by unbinding the detectives. I want to remind the people the last time the rnc came down like a ton of bricks was 1976. The last contested convention. 1976. That was to block a man named Ronald Reagan because they thought he could come in and take out the presumptive nominee. And he may have and that gave us jimmy carter. The vote yesterday, you lost 8712. What can you do now . We can continue to work. And kendall and ron will continue to work to try to get to a minority port. I dont think thats likely. I think its likely donald trump is going to be the nominee. Just for the few viewers. Minority report, this could take place on monday. They have to get 28 signatories. Kendall has until the meeting to get 28 people to sign. That means 16 people who already didnt stand up. And it was a stand up vote, standing up for what you believe in. It is a hard push. It is a hard push. Lets listen to i want to continue the conversation and listen to what paul ryan said about all of this. Lets play it. It is not my job as chairman of the convention to tell the detectives how to run their convention. It is my job to take the rules that they write for the convention and make sure those rules are applied equally, honestly, and transparentally. So i make sure that i do not comment, because i wont, put my thumb on the scale as to what these delegates do. Mike, what waen answer do you want. That was my question he was responding to. When he said the rnc came down against the unbind things. This is the dettle. These are duly elected dettdeled in the states. They have the amount ability to offer amendments. We started at 8 00 in the morning and went until 10 00ex 10 30 at night. The votes never materialized. That stopped the never trump unbinding attempt. At the convention in terms of the rules paul ryan doesnt have a lot of decisions to make because they have been made at the rules committee. Steve then the question becomes where do you go from here . What do you do, vote for gary johnson, do you vote for a write in like jeb bush said he might. Whats your play here. Despite the fact that i dont believe the party is going to pick the best candidate to beat Hillary Clinton it is our best shot at defeating Hillary Clinton. We need to do everything we can to make sure that happens. Its going to be an uphill battle i believe. But that remains to be seen. I want to talk about monday. What can take place monday. This is important, this is about paul ryan. He can choose for the rules to be voted on separately. Instead of all on one block, there will be a motion to accept all the rules in one shot, they will call for one single vote. But they can break up the rules and vote on each rule. Mike, whats your take . Should that happen . No, because the rules Committee Heard all if amendments and most of them were killed. The unbind rule lost, only got 12 votes. If they got the signatures to do a minority report steve is about to jump out i am. Because within that block of rules, rule 38b at last count we found that the bell gats are bound. They are bound. Why did we have to pass a rule 37b that says the bell gats are bound . They could pull that rule out and debate it on the floor. Of course they could. Co they could have pulled it out in the rules committee. Every rule of the convention is decided by the delegates for the delegates. The delegates make all the decision. It starts with the rules committee. They made a bunch of decisions. They are going the bring it to the floor. I think it might be a bit of a show to split it up and make it a point of things that arent going to win. I dont think thats in the interest of the party considering they are almost conceding were not really going to get anywhere with this, so were doing this to make a point. I dont know about that. If you pull 35b out these delegates may not want to bind themselves. One word answer, yes or no. Steve, will donald trump emerge friday morning, will donald trump be the nominee. Most likely. Yes. Thanks gentlemen. You agree on that. You can keep fighting in the commercial break. Though. Coming up live in the cnn newsroom, the politics of fear. Another terrorist attack in france, mass casualties, and coup attempt last night in turkey. The events all highlighting very different strategies, very different rhetoric from trump and clinton. But what are voters feeling here at home . What do they need from their next president on that front . Straight ahead. Gary, gary, gary. I am proud of you, my man. Usic sex machine by james brown coverage here in cleveland at the rnc. Weather it is dallas or nice or paris or orlando or straubl all Convention Kicks off as cities in the United States and around the world are coping with terrorists. The threat and how to confront it. No doubt you will hear more about it in speeches this week and at the dnc. Americans are split right down the middle when it comes to which candidate they think will do a better job at fighting terrorism. During his speech this morning, mike pence, Donald Trumps running mate slammed Hillary Clintons track record as secretary of state. After four years of clinton, who really led the way and led boom down a horrible path because i dont even think he could have made these decisions so padly, she led him right down a horrible path. He didnt know what he was doing. I misspoke, obviously donald trump there slamming clintons record on fising isis. Clinton in return releasing this ad. Who are you culting with consistently so that you are ready on day one . Im speaking with myself because i have a very good brain. My primary consultant is myself. While donald trump consulted with himself, as secretary of state, Hillary Clinton negotiated a zbooir in gaza a reduction in nuclear weapons, took on Vladimir Putin and stood up against the trafficking of human beings. A steady leader in an unsteady world. Lets debate it. Cnn political commentators paul de gaullea and kaley mche will whitney is with us. Paul, let me start with you. You cant get around the fact that Hillary Clinton was part of the boom administration. Heres what i heard from clevelanders last night who said to me part of their problem is they feel like they are living in a more dangerous world and they feel like this administration hasnt done enough to fight isis and they tie clinton to the administration. How do you fight that . First, we lived in a more dangerous world since iraq. In a volatile world, dupe a volatile president . I not only support hillary, i support a superpac. Our super pac is led by a general who led troops often in dangerous situations who looks right at you and says this is not a man you can trust with our lives. We the more the voters look at it as less of a reality show and less as show biz which they think do we want that finger on the button of a nuclear weapon. Hillary clinton had an endorsement because of that, because of who will pick up the red phone. Kaley, lets pull up the polling guide that shows that americans believe trump would be more effective in fighting isis. When you ask specifically about isis thats who would be better at handling terrorism. But the next poll, 52 to 49 said trump will be better at handling isis. I just had rick scott on and pressed him on how he would eliminate isis. Scott said that will come when he is president. Isnt it time for details . A number of things he said are specific. First of all the recognition that terrorism starts at our border. That people get into the country and then want to wage terrorism as we saw in san bernardino. Im talking about isis specifically. Sure. That includes isis. You look at terrorists over the last ten years or more than that, 15 years, 580 convicted terrorist, 380 foreign born. Building a wall doesnt help whats happening from syria. Part of it. It. How. It stops isis terrorists posing as refugees from getting into our country. That is what happened in paris, the guy who blew himself up outside of a soccer stadium was in fact someone who posed as refugee. Donald trump is take we are going to stop this until we find out whats going on. Unlike Hillary Clinton who every time there is a terrorist attack the answer is to lecture americans on being tolerant towards islam. That is not an answer. Hillary clinton came out on cnns program newday just a few weeks ago after the istanbul attack. She said from my perspective it matters what we do rather than what we say. She said whether you call it radical jihadism or radical islam i am happy to say either. Thats been a point of attack from folks in your camp, she is saying it. She wont recognize something needs to change at our borders. When you ask her whats the slougs to terrorists posing as refugees, which the director of National Security has said, the fbi director, the director of the cia say we cant adequately vet these refugees, when asked about how to stop that, she says increase refugees by 500 . Donald trump recognizes the problem, Hillary Clinton wont talk about it. Your response . Kaley is saying you have got look here at home, he has been specific in terms of what he would do about immigration. His idea of banning muslims. He called for originally a direct quote a total and complete shutdown of all muslims entering america and then in trump fashion said until we figure out what the hell is going on. We have figured it out. If you care about border security, bom obama has put more armed personnel on the u. S. Mexico border since Woodrow Wilson was chasing pancho villa. We have the most security u. S. Mexico i go down there, deer hunting down there, i have been down there. It is an armed zone. And mexicans are going home. Not staying here. Mr. Trumps wall will only stop their departure. Hib wrong on every single major Foreign Policy in theest last decade. Rudy giuliani said in 2008 and said democrats are denying terrorism, and you cant defeat a problem when you deny it. That was in 2008. That he was pressing it. He is going to hire a casino operator and he says im going to bomb the do do out of isis of the really . How . I know you are a trump supporter, but would you like you dont agree with him on anything, would you like to hear this week more specifics on him on how he will carry this fight out abroad. I dont think because i think he has given more specifics than Hillary Clinton and i want to see the same strength that has made him 13 points ahead of her when voters look to isis. Kaley, paul, we appreciate it. Coming up live here in the cnn newsroom we are live as i said at the site of the Republican National convention in cleveland. We will hit the streets of cleveland and look at how the latest terror attacks overseas how its all impacting the major, major security operation right here, right now. Next. They think that its sad. I think its important for everyone to know that there is so much more to memory support than the stigmas you hearabout. That these residents still have lives and their lives still matter and that they are still living their lives. Right now, this city, cleveland, is beefing up security for the Republican National convention. The partys presumptive nominee is someone who is seen frankly a lot of unrest outside at many of his campaign rallies. Take a look at this. These are protesters breaking through Police Barricades outside of a trump rally in albuquerque, new mexico, back in may. Police in cleveland right now are preparing to deal potentially with situations like this during the rnc this week. Cnn Law Enforcement analyst bob reed is with us. Who knows whats going to happen here. I know just getting to the set today and rnc hasnt even started i had to we have been my way through barricades that were twice my height. Yes. What are they preparing for here . How ready are they . When you go through those barricades it is a delicate balance for Law Enforcement in recognition that they are going to be able to get ems and fire trucks and so forth through those. And at the same time making sure the bad guys wont get through it as well. They have part of their protocol is truck attack issues. They have in their protocol now that they will not allow trucks for this next week into the venue, the 1. 7 mile venue without first being expected and without having an escort. When you talk about the open carry law here. A colleague of mine earlier today said she saw a man Walking Around with a rifle. There is open carry in ohio. Thats what it is. Was it a smart idea to allow that to persist within this security zone and not to pass a special ordinance to say you cant have open carry of weapons for this week at this venue . The 1. 7 mile venue, they cannot carry firearms as you know. And the Police Union President has said it is so dumb for them to be able to keep firearms. I dont believe it would have been stepping on the constitution for four or five days to have passed an ordinance that said that you cant carry. I dont know the reasons why they didnt do that. But im sure that there was some legal issues that they didnt want to get involved in. As a former sheriff, what is the challenge for you then if there is open carry and there is disturbance . Is it about knowing who you are going after, frankly . Its dangerous, for both sides. One you have civilians that are now carrying firearms that maybe they are not as familiar with as Police Officers are. You could have an accidental discharge. If you have an accidental discharge the good guys dont know who the bad guys are. Now there would absolutely be an exchange of gunfire. This is what were going into monday with, right. We are. You do the best we can. We do the best we can. And we hope we have told people that we frown on the issue of open carry. But some people, they dont care. And they are going to open carry. So we just have to be diligent. We have to make sure that we and we are hoping for some voluntary complyians. How much were going to get, i dont know. Good luck to you your team and everyone here. They are bringing in thousands from Police Officers from out of the state, out of the city to try to help with this. They are, thank you.
