Exbritish spy who wrote the infamous dossier about the president. Attorneys for the president s former Campaign Chairman Paul Manafort in court for a Pretrial Hearing for his second trial set to begin next month. His attorneys were in talks with special counsel Robert Muellers team for a possible plea deal to avoid that second trial. Theres no plea deal right now. What happened . Also happening right now, james mattis and Joseph Dunford holding a briefing at the pentagon. We begin with jessica schneider. Conservatives on capitol hill, they are saying this morning that they want, quote, the truth from bruce ohr. Of course, they have been digging in on the official for more than a year now. The president has been helping to bolster their condemnation with his tweets and comments. Really, whats the issue here . Bruce ohr met multiple times with Christopher Steele. Steele is the former british spy who drafted that dossier with unverified details about donald trump during the election. The question here is that conservatives will be digging into, why did bruce ohr meet with Christopher Steele even after the fbi had terminated its relationship with the former british spy . Republicans, they have been crying conspiracy theories for months. Now they are in this closeddoor confrontation. Theyre trying to get more details out of bruce ohr that veteran Justice Department official. On the way into the hearing this morning, we heard from Florida Republican matt getz. He wants to know a lot of details. Here is what he wants. Really important for us to establish a time line regarding bruce ohrs activities and nellie ohrs activities. Theres a lot we dont know when he learned his wife was working with an agent of a Foreign Government to destabilize the president ial election and potentially a presidency. He went on to question rod rosensteins leadership. As Deputy Attorney general, rosenstein has been a target of conservatives. Those conservatives want to know when Justice Department officials became aware of ohrs meetings with Christopher Steele. Because they want to know whether any of the meetings may have played any role in the russia investigation. We heard from the chairman of the committee, meadows. He said he has at least 60 questions for bruce ohr. This likely to stretch long into the day. And it probably will get quite heated behind the closed doors. We can imagine that it will. Also just want to quickly check in on this, the wall street journal reporting Paul Manaforts lawyers had been talking about a possible plea deal for this second trial set to start next month. Those discussions happening before we had a conviction in this first case. Correct . Thats exactly right. Those plea deal talks, they stalled after special Counsel Robert Mueller raised certain issues to manaforts defense team. The wall street journal didnt have detail on what exactly those issues were. Really, its significant that the talks were happening since Paul Manafort has long held that he is innocent and has long held he wont work on a deal with prosecutors. Really, maybe the reality is starting to come into clear focus for Paul Manafort. He has one conviction on eight counts in virginia. That happened one week ago. The d. C. Trial is coming up in a few weeks. Thats set to be a longer, more difficult trial. Prosecutors say they have three times the evidence. Really, the pressure could be on Paul Manafort to possibly strike a deal. Right now, a Pretrial Hearing is happening in that d. C. Case. Manafort though isnt attending. He opted to stay in jail for alexandria. We wont see him likely until this trial at the end of september. Jessica schneider with the latest, thank you. Joining me now shan wu, a former federal prosecutor and former defense attorney for rick gates. Always good to have you with us. Lets pick up there in terms of what the wall street journal is reporting about a possible plea deal for Paul Manafort and why this may have broken off. What stands out to you . What do you think some of the issues could have been for the special counsel . Its hard to say what they might have been. It could have been the special counsel had specific admissions they wanted from him. On the other hand it could be something more ped he estrian. When the negotiations were occurring, its while the jury is out. Both sides had reason to be a little bit nervous with that note about reasonable doubt. Its basically a moment where the roulette wheel is spinning. Neither side knows who will come out ahead. Its a smart time for manaforts team to push for a bargain. Its also a very tight time window for the pros cuters to feel confidence that they could give him any kind of a good deal. They would normally want to have a lot of due diligence, sit down with him, talk to his lawyers. That sort of in the hallway back room negotiation while the jury is out, pretty tight time line. Im not surprised it broke down. Do you think the talks could resume there . I think the talks could resume. The pressure is enormous on manafort. The mindset for someone in his position, it starts with denial, how dare they accuse me of this. It slowly starts to morph as time goes on. He actually faces potentially three trials. He had his first one. Then theres the second one coming up. They could decide to retry him on those hung counts. The pressure is just enormous on him right now. When we look at theres new reporting, Rudy Giuliani saying, we still havent heard from muellers team about an interview. We sent our letter. It was five or six pages. They say they are reviewing it. Anything to read into that in terms of timing . I think the timing is important as you are saying, because theyre getting near the elections. I think its funny he thinks a five or six page letter is relatively short. Seems like a dense letter to go through. They may have reached a point where they are going to call his bluff, meaning they are either going to let them know, were going to write the report without the president sitting down, or they will issue a subpoena. Thats mostly what they are mulling over. I dont think they would start writing without given giuliani an answer. You are giving me two scenarios. You think we are going to do the report without the interview or we issue a subpoena, not necessarily that were going on the demands and the im trying the parameters, i suppose, potentially laid out by Rudy Giuliani in that letter, that doesnt seem like its an option to you . I dont think so. I have to say, it could be an option for the special counsel to simply say, okay, fine, you can have these parameters, sit down with us. Were going to ask our questions and you can say were not answering that question and get a bunch of i refuse to answer on these particular issues. Shan wu, this will not be the last time we talk about that letter and whats going to happen. Thank you. Good to see you. This morning, a key gop senator, an ally of President Trump, says attorney general Jeff Sessions does need to go. But the special counsel has to stay. Listen to Lindsey Graham earlier today on today. The president has lost confidence in Jeff Sessions. This is a dysfunctional relationship. We need a better one. Is there somebody who is highly qualified that has the confidence of the president and will also understand their job is to protect mueller . We can find that person after the election, if thats what the president wants. Joining us now, mark short, cnn political commentator. Mark, good to have you with us. What do you make of the comments this morning . I think that the challenge would be confirming a new attorney general in this climate right now. I think it would be quite a challenge. I think if there was any conversation, i think its appropriate to look at it after the midterm. I think its also that the president should have a cabinet he has faith and trust in. I know theres been a lot of commentary about the independence of the department of justice. The department of justice is filled with political appointees. This suggests that eric holders department of justice was an independent one would be laughable. I think the president should have a cabinet he has confidence and faith in. Theres also the question of what confidence really means to this president. Is it confidence in them doing the job well, which we saw attorney general Jeff Sessions hit back in that statement yesterday saying, im doing exactly what i was brought on to do . Or is it a different kind of confidence . Is it this loyalty we hear so much about that for the president is a Blind Loyalty . I think the president has complimented Jeff Sessions on several elements specifically around sanctuary cities and policies the president has been encouraged to see him pursue. I think the frustration goes back, as you have reported many times, the president feeling that if Jeff Sessions was going to recuse himself from this investigation, that he should have told the president that ahead of time. Because he feels that its been a very politically motivated investigation. There was a time when conservatives and civil libertarians had great concerns about the power of special prosecutors, independent prosecutors who decide often that they find a target and they want to investigate every part of that target. What was supposed to be an investigation about russian interference in our election is now about prosecuting people for tax evasion and for challenges of not registering as a foreign lobbyist. Those are legitimate crimes that should be prosecuted. The question is, do you need independent and special counsels to do that . We know from the director that he was given what he is allowed to do. I want to stay on this question of what a next attorney general could look like. As we are talking about whats important to the president , we heard from Lindsey Graham that whoever would be replacing attorney general Jeff Sessions would have to be someone who would also promise that they would protect robert mueller. Do you think that that would be a deal breaker for the president . I dont know. You know, i think that the president expressed his frustration with that. Theres also been, i think, perhaps opportunities for the white house to be less cooperative. The white house has turned over millions of pages of documents to the special counsel. Im not sure that thats really a deal breaker. Im not sure i agree with senator graham on that point. The president has been this has been brought up a number of times. Lindsey graham was asked about it this morning. The president says continually, no collusion, nothing to see here, rigged witch hunt. I will ask again. I know you had the question before. Would it be more beneficial for the president , who contends theres nothing to see here, to just let this investigation finish out, get the report, see what it says and then pass his judgement . Erica, lets keep in mind a couple things. The investigation has been going on for two years now at tens of millions of dollars of expense. Theres been house investigations far from the longest investigation by a special counsel. I dont have a graph in front of me. But we looked at that a number of times. Its not like we are looking at 20 years here. Is that the measurement . Is it supposed to be the longest investigation ever . Shouldnt it be when the investigation is done . The measurement is its been going on over two years. You had house investigations, Senate Investigations that have not concluded that there was any russian interference im sorry, collusion. Thats what this investigation was supposed to be about. Naturally, theres a lot of frustration on the president s part about that. We are out of time. Always appreciate you joining us. Thank you. Moments ago, james mattis speaking about john mccain. Here are his words. I cannot thank Congress Without expressing my respect for senator mccain for his steadfast courage and his service. My deepest condolences to his family for the loss of a man who represented all the ideals america stands for. Senator john mccain was a man who served his country honorably as a naval officer, as a defiant prisoner of war, standing with his brothers in arms until all returned home together, and as a leader in congress, including the chairman of the Senate Armed Service committee. In all he did, senator mccain never lost sight of our shared purpose in defense of freedom. For in his words, and i quote, a shared purpose does not claim our identity, it enlarges on the contrary, it enlarges your sense of self. So our nation has lost a great patriot and our military lost one of our most ardent supporters. We will continue to monitor that for further comments. Just hearing from secretary mattis there. Is that a winning equation come midterms in november . Joining me to discuss, Ron Brownstein and political analyst molly ball. Ron, lets start there. We know this can work well at this point in the game. Can it help you im terrible at a sports analogy but im going with it. Can it help you carry the ball down the field for the rest of the season . These are two of the perfect places to test this. There are red states on the ballot in november where democrats are defending senate seats in places where donald trump is popular. In those places, republican candidates can embrace him without too much fear. Arizona and florida are more indicative of the general election environment. There are places where the support for the president is slightly underwater in both cases. You have in particularly the Arizona Senate race with Martha Mcsally who started more of a senate right republican but has moved to the right during the primary because of trumps popularity, in part to fend off opponents. In florida where you have the governor candidate who embraced donald trump. In both places, its a much dicier proposition. Yes, republicans are hoping enhanced turnout among the base allows them to avoid usual midterm losses. The president is facing headwinds in both states. It will be a gamble come november. It will be interesting to see we know there was a Facebook Post over the weekend questioning the timing of senator mccains familys announcement about him ending treatment, that comes out a couple of hours before the senator passed. Jeff flake weighed in. I want to play what he had to say. I think most arizonians recognize that that was a horrible statement. Its not the first. I would be surprised if she was rewarded for those kind of statements at the ballot box today. Those are the comments, molly, from jeff flake. Ward tweeted, Political Correctness is like a cancer. We know that played well. Is jeff flake right here . Is kelly ward right here . We will find out tonight. Kelly ward is someone who in previous primaries, including against senator mccain, was viewed as something of a crackpot. The fact she put such a squeeze on the establishments favorite candidate tells you about the changed dynamic of the Republican Party in the trump era as well as the presence of trumps buddy in the race. He doesnt seem to be getting a lot of traction. Republicans in washington have had to pour a lot of money into this race to prop up mcsally. She has had to totally reverse herself on her support for the president. This is someone who skipped the Republican Convention in 2016 because of her distaste for trump. Now has turned around and tried to cast herself as his best ally in the u. S. Senate. As ron was saying, in a pinkish purple state, thats a gamble in the general election. It will be interesting to see whether theres in pivot that has to take place when and if she does win the primary. Shes favored to win. I do think those comments damaged kelly ward because there has been an outpouring of support for senator mccain and his family. We will see. Ron, in terms that was outpouring and the discussion about senator mccain and what his contributions were over the last 60 years of service to this country and particularly to the state of arizona, how much do you think that may be coming into play more now . Some of it we will know after voters weigh in. After casting their ballot. It is interesting that all of these things are coming to a head at the same time. Now theres going to be a decision that has to be made about who the governor will appoint to replace senator mccain. Right. Whether he appoints someone in the mccain mold who has an independent voice and critical probably the leader of the critics of donald trump, certainly one who has been more willing than the others in the senate, corker, flake to actually impose consequences as a result of his criticism. His vote against repealing the Affordable Care act, not because he supported the law but because he opposed the process, the hyperpartisan secretive process, that set a standard that none of the other trim p trump critics have been able to reach. They have moved away from the nationalism. It was the trumpmccain feud dates back to mccains criticism of trump precisely on those grounds. The best thing that Martha Mcsally has going for her is that both arpaio and ward are in the race and would divide up the vote more drawn to the trump message. I think this is a moment where you get the magnitude of the change in the Republican Party that we have watched over the past 20 years, with the passing of john mccain exactly as this primary is unfolding. What are you watching most, molly, in florida . What do you want to see after we get the results tonight . Im watching the democratic primary most closely in florida, just because thats the one that seems the most up in the air. You have a really interesting dynamic between a more moderate presumed frontrunner with high name recognition and some progressive challengers who have seem to get a lot of traction in recent weeks. In the republican primaries, both the governor and senate, seem like a forgone conclusion with a similar dynamic that we observe in arizona and other republican primaries across the country. Buddying up with trump is the best way to gain the favor of the republican base. I think we pretty much know how those are going to turn out. The democratic primary is really interesting. Thats what im going to get the most information from tomorrow morning. Molly ball, Ron Brownstein, appreciate it as always. Thank you. An investigation is now under way after allegations that ice provided neglectful medical care for a toddler who became ill while in its custody. That same toddler died weeks after being released. The toddler died six weeks after being released from an emigration facility in texas. Thats where her mother claims the little girl contracted a respiratory infection and wasnt given adequate treatment. Joining me, nick valencia who has the latest. This mother and her 18monthold daughter asking for asylum from guatemala. They were fleeing Gang Violence hoping for a better life here in the United States. They were detained and transferred to the south Texas Family Residential Center in south texas. What the family and attorney allege happened is absolutely awful. Here is a time line of what the attorney provided to us saying that in the course of the three weeks, a few days after arriving, they were detained by ice. The little girl showed no health problems. Two weeks later, she had symptoms of a respiratory infection. She was given meds. It didnt improve her condition. It seemed her condition only deteriorated. She was vomiting, losing weight, developed a fever. By march 25, she was clearly so gravely ill that the two were released. Within 24 hours, the mother, who is 20 years old, took her 18monthold to the emergency room where for the next six weeks, she was hospitalized for respiratory failure. Her condition continued to worsen and on may 10, she died at the Childrens Hospital in philadelphia. As you mentioned, the familys attorney is blaming ice which runs this facility in part with others. Here is part of the statement of what they said to us. A mother lost her little girl because ice and those running the immigration prison failed them inexcusably. They are saying that this child who arrived at the facility healthy died six weeks after leaving the facility because they were neglected. The ice response there in terms of what they said. We did reach out to them. They offered thus statement, not specifically addressing about this case but saying ice is committed to ensuring the welfare of those in the agencys custody, including providing access to necessary and appropriate medical care, comprehensive medical care is provided to all individuals in ice custody. We should mention quickly here, Child Welfare officials in the state of texas have launched an investigation. I spent a month on the border talking to a lot of the migrants. The majority of them they think when they come to the United States that they will have a better life, things will be okay. This is absolutely a parents worst nightmare. He says the vatican is complicit in hiding details. Take a listen. 23 grand jurors met for two years in pennsylvania. They unearthed over 301 predator priests, more than 1,000 victims, children in pennsylvania. They found that there was not only widespread sexual abuse, rape of children, but they found that there was a systematic coverup that went all the way to the vatican. A spokesman telling cnn, if the prosecutor is referring to something outside of the report, we will wait to see that before commenting. This comes after a grand jury report, of course, released two weeks ago detailed the 300 socalled predator priests who preyed on more than 1,000 children that lasted decades. Sean joins me now. He survived sexual abuse at the hands of a priest who was a teacher at his school. We emailed about this and you were outrages what we were hearing from the response from the vatican. I will let you put that in your own words. You know, really, were getting an abbott and costello routine out of the vatican. We have a report out of pennsylvania using documents recovered directly from their archives showing a coverup. The victims are a proverbial beach ball being passed around pennsylvania instead of being helped. The attorney general is working very hard to get us the justice that we deserve, while were getting abbott and costello out of the vatican. Were a political football in the senate of pennsylvania. The parishioners we believe are heartfelt and want to help us. Unfortunately for us and them, theres really no leadership coming out of their church to guide them in the direction they need to go. You knew, obviously, what happened to you and perhaps about some other people. But you were just telling me in the break that on the day that the attorney general announced the findings of this report, you didnt see the report until after that announcement, because it wasnt actually released until the moment that he was making this announcement. You were learning about some of these things as he was talking about them. Its been two weeks. Have you even begun to process the scope of this abuse that is detailed in the report and the coverup . Im beginning to process it. The last week and a half has been a whirlwind. Im doing interview after interview after interview. With every interview, i keep reflecting on the families i have gathered with, of victims no longer with us and why it is so important that we keep on this message. Im grasping and what i want people to realize, you are right, i didnt hear the stories until the attorney general spoke for them. One of the stories in particular, if you were the victim that the attorney general was referring to, that was forced to orally satisfy their priest, then gargle with holy water and go to confession immediately to that priest, is anything thats going on right now going to satisfy you . This is the time where these gamesmanship things have to end. The legislation has to stand up and do their jobs because its clear that the Catholic Churchs leadership is inept at handling this. You are talking about legislation. Im guessing you are referring to what we are waiting to see happens in pennsylvania with removing the statute of limitations on all childhood sexual abuse cases and opening this window for two years for victims as well. When it comes to anything that can be done, i have heard from a number of other survivors, this pope doesnt listen to us, this pope doesnt want to hear from us. We are tired of prayers and fasting. We want action. What is there in terms of action that would even signify a small amount of justice for you at this point . People need to contact the Senate Leadership in pennsylvania. They have been blocki ining legislation. It has the recommendation in place already and has been for a few years. Its been blocked over and over and over. Contact your state Senate Legislation and tell them to enact this. The attorney general, the report, the grand jury report, 30 names are redacted. We dont know where in pennsylvania they are. They could be in your backyard. They could be in my backyard. The senate right now is perfectly content on just letting them go. You say its different this time because of social media with this report. You believe this will lead to real change in. It is leading for real change. I have reporters flying in from germany to listen to me. This is change. Appreciate it as always. Thank you so much for having me. People in detroit waiting in long lines to honor the late queen of soul, Aretha Franklin. While everyone knows her gospel and her soul hits, she was also incredibly talented when it came to opera. Thats where our next guest comes in. She helped to coach Aretha Franklin in opera, preparing her for big moments, including at the 1998 Grammy Awards. Joining me is mary callahanlynch, good to have you with us today. Talk to us about how you and Aretha Franklin first met. I imagine that was quite a moment for you. How this happened . Well, pavaratti requested miss franklin to learn an aria for a private party in new york. Thats how we first met. I thought it was going to be a one shot deal. Then she happened to be in new york when the Grammy Awards were happening. Pavaratti became ill. Aretha, with a 30minute notice, with no rehearsal, went on for the Grammy Awards. Then our relationship continued because she had so many requests from all over the country to sing with orchestras. That was quite a moment at the grammys. A lot of people have referenced that, especially since her passing. Just as further evidence of her incredible range and the godgiven talents that she has. What was it like to work with her, someone that was so wellknown for her gospel career, her soul, and then to now be working with her on opera . Well, you know, a lot of people think its a strange die dichotomy. It was a joy. Opera is larger than life. Aretha was larger than life. It requires musical ability and, of course, obviously, the queen had that. And drama. We all know aretha was the consummate performer. The bigger thing is the soul. The queen of soul, it was the perfect match, actually. She loved opera. It was a joy to work with her. She was so musical. She could she was like a sponge. She drank it in. Its like she could do anything. I love just seeing how your face lights up as you are talking about her and what a wonderful person she was and how wonderful she was to work with. You are also the founder, we should point out, of motor city opera and bringing opera into public schools. Tell us a little bit more about those efforts. When you are talking about opera to kids, do you sometimes say, look at Aretha Franklin, she did all kinds of things, including opera . Well, actually it was a marriage made in heaven, i felt. I was very reticent to approach aretha. We had been traveling for a couple of years when i decided to start this company to bring the transformative art of opera to the inner city kids of detroit free of charge. When we were assembling our board of directors, i, of course, thought of aretha. So i was reticent to call her, but i did. I said, i really want you to think about something. Im starting this company. Your endorsement would mean everything, just to have your name on our stationery. She said, well, mary, i love opera. I love children. And i love the city of detroit. So im in. I was so thrilled, because it was such an endorsement for us. It meant so much to her, our mission to bring an artfo form that she really loved. Its so wonderful. We appreciate you talking the time this morning to share your memories and to share with us another part of Aretha Franklins life that many of us were not familiar with. Thank you so much. Thank you.
