Lets start with what happened last night, andy scholes is with me for all of that. So this is players from different teams taking different action to make their voices heard. What did we see. Players on different teams doing Different Things but there is no rule or discipline coming their way because the nfl released a statement saying how they enforce their National Anthem policy was on hold while they continue to have discussions with the players on how to handle it. So that means theres no punishment for players demonstrating and last night multiple players did protest before the first preseason game of the year and the Rockets Red Glare that is dolphins Wide Receiver kenny stills and Albert Wilson taking a knee during the National Anthem. Stills has kneeled during the National Anthem during the past two seasons and he spoke about the decision to continue to do
The latest news from around the world with hosts John Berman and Poppy Harlow. That issue. He simply wants to make this about disrespecting the flag. This is just a continuation of what has been going on for over a year at this point poppy. Youre so right and such important context for us on the eve of one year since the deadly you night the right protest in charlotte. Abby, ill bet back to you with more headlines but lets stick with this for now. Back with me is andy scholes, Cornell Brooks Former president of the naacp. Cornell, as im reading the president s tweets what struck me is this part of the first one, and i quote the president , numerous players from different teams wanted to show their outrage at something that most of them are unable to define. This is about social injustice in america and he is saying black american men who are kneeling or standing in the locker room or raising their fist are unable to define what that is like. The president is essentially
im glad you brought that up theres important reporting on that. Theres a deposition that was given by Dallas Cowboys owner jerry jones and in that deposition according to this reporting from the Wall Street Journal the president told jones on a phone call that him focusing on kneeling and the nfl players, and i quote, this one lifts me. So let me bring van jones into this conversation as well and van will be with me later. Well talk about criminal Justice Reform. On this issue saying this one lifts me. Know he know this is stirs his base and what this does in america. Its sad. You have the tale of two presidencies. On the substance he actually has hurt the nfl players and is doing stuff on Criminal Justice and said i want the nfl players to help me on Criminal Justice but on the similar bombs its catnip for him. Hes addicted to the symbolism of this conflict, stirring the
pot, it does give his base some cheap sense of yeah hes sticking it up to those people and at some point its frustrating. The nfl players have been calling for something to be done about criminal Justice Reform. He cannot get away from getting in these racially charged conflicts. He did it at a Round Table Discussion because youre right, he is acting on that lets remind people where this started. It started the conversation, the action from Colin Kaepernick, the former quarterback for the 49ers, he took to twitter and he hasnt given interviews, he hasnt spoken out but hes done a lot, put his name and money and effort behind enacting change. He writes my brother, continue this protest of systemic
oppression by taking a knee. His message, stay strong brothers. Andy scholes, remind us where Colin Kaepernick is in all of this. He wasnt resigned, theres been debate about that. Of course there has been. Hes the one who started it and he had to fall on the sword for the whole thing and if you look at it now its silly the way his nfl career ended because he wasnt the only one kneeling, he was just the guy that started the movement and the fact he doesnt want to have a job in the nfl, its not right. Because to think hes not one of the best 90 quarterbacks in this country, it cant be true. He cant be the guy that takes the team to the super bowl to suddenly not being able to play in this league so he has the Collusion Case going against the nfl, most would think he has a case because of the fact that his skills show he should be
playing in the nfl but hes on the sidelines poppy, he didnt get another tryout or contract this off season going into preseason, its not looking likely that will happen for him again with the way the president continues to tweet about it especially. Cornell i would be remiss not to focus on the timing here. Sunday marks one year since the unite the right rally in charlottesville, a rally that took the life of heather haier, that took the life of two Police Officers and where the president i think one thing he will always be remembered for is saying in the moments after, both sides are to blame. So what we hear from him this morning, what does that mean in the context of the mark of what this weekend is . The president s tweet confirms what much of america knows which is that the president has demonstrated and displayed coward december, a fecklessness. So his presidency will be defined by at least two moments,
helsinki and charlottesville when he refused to stand against putin and when he refused to stand against as ins and fascists. This is an indictment of this president. For him to tweet about american athletes standing against Police Misconduct that they should be cool and be happy which is the moral equivalent of laura ingrah ingrahams shut up and dribble is insulting to not only the athletes but to millions of americans, particularly Young Americans who are in our streets standing up for justice and standing against injustice, particularly this weekend. This is the one Year Anniversary of charlottesville and the murder, the murder of heather hier. Has the president spoken about that . Has he expressed outrage or sympathy or empathy. This is an indictment of him. Cornell, stick around. Well hear from Heather Heyers mother one year later. When you look at the polling, lets pull up the gallop poll that shows how americans feel we dont have it. How do you feel about the state of Race Relations in america. 51 of americans felt satisfied 40, not satisfied. This year 29 of americans feel satisfied about Race Relations, 46 not satisfied. Its been on a downward trend even in the final years of the Obama Presidency into the trump presidency. Well, its tough because we do have changes demographically in the country. The question is does the leadership of the country think its a good thing or bad thing . Are we trying to figure out Common Ground or separate grievances . And i believe obama tried very hard to get us to Common Ground
but its a tough conversation. When you open up that conversation, you can open up anxiety. So you want to continue it to sustain it. The whole thing instead got hijacked by trumps nativism and we are in a situation where its almost fashionable in some corners to add to the fashionable . Fashionable to add to the racial grievance. Gentlemen, stick with me, thank you very much for weighing in on this. We have a lot ahead. The president also did just make some big news when it comes to tariffs on turkey. Hes announced major tariffs on steel and aluminum. This stems from a much bigger story. Abby phillip is with me to explain what is behind this and why its so significant. Abby, walk us through it. Thats right, poppy, another escalation in this dispute over the detainment of a pastor, andrew brunson, who has been detained in turkey since 2016. The Trump Administration has been working Behind The Scenes with turkey to free this pastor, Vice President mike pence has been involved in this effort as well but talks have broken down and a couple weeks ago the administration announced sanctions against turkey, a huge step, a huge escalation in this dispute and now today another escalation in the dispute, the president saying in the tweet that aluminum will now be 20 and tariffs, and steel 50 . He says our relations with turkey are not good. Prime minister erdogan was at the white house having a cordial visit with President Trump and now this dispute has been a source of a souring of this relation sh relationship. Its not clear what kind of authority the administration is using to engage in using tariffs as opposed to sanctions to president pressure on turkey
this pastor continues to be detained and the administration focused on trying to release americans detained in countries abroad, very unhappy with the turkish governments unwillingness to do more. And this has been escalating since the coup attempt two years ago. Abby, thank you for that chl. Still to come, the president railing against the Mueller Probe again. Two words that intrigued us and have us asking questions stay tuned writes the president. And the federal government tried to deport a mother and her daughter seeking asylum in this country claiming years of abuse and Death Threats, but when a federal judge heard about it, he ordered the government to turn the plane around, bring them back to the u. For his part, the president has put out yet another blistering statement against what he calls the rigged witchhunt. This ends differently than most with these two words stay tuned. And with that i bring in cnn political analyst molly ball and jackie kucinich. Ladies, i hope youve come with answers. Molly, to you first. Stay tuned on what . Obviously this is an ongoing investigation. I think its also the case that the president knows more than the rest of us although he does do his best to keep us informed by twitter of every development
and evolution in his thinking. By this is also something thats sort of a something trump says a lot, he like to say stay tuned. Sort of the Tv Impresario likes to string people along so thats all i read into that. Moving on, jackie, to what weve seen in the and the president has been talking about the Manafort Trial On Twitter and tweeting about it so quite a week for that, for his former campaign chairman. Something interesting happened in the courtroom tied to the trump campaign. They asked the judge to seal the transcript of the sidebar that happen between the attorneys, the defense, prosecution and judge earlier this week that discussed rick gates and his interview with the Special Counsel as it pertains to his work on the trump campaign. The judge agreed to keep this sealed. What do you read into that . It shows how much we dont
know that Robert Mueller knows. Despite the sort of Performance Art despite the president and Rudy Giuliani and what they say their interactions are mueller have been or havent been, mueller hasnt spoken. Mueller hasnt really tipped his hand at all. This is another example of just how much is still under the radar and, yeah, rick gates had not only with the trump campaign, with the inaugural committee his ties are pretty deep even if the president doesnt really want to acknowledge how much manafort actually had to do with his campaign. Its also important to note molly that Rick Gates Has part of his Plea Agreement here with mueller is that he has to cooperate in the investigation of the russia probe as well so its not just that hes critical and star witness in the manafort trial that he has to cooperate with them on that front as well. Giuliani had dinner with the president last night this is eight months back and forth, back and forth. But are we at a point where this isnt going to happen or do you get the sense that youre getting closer to a sitdown. I dont know. And i think a lot of the public litigating of this question that giuliani has been doing is not necessarily informative. There are these ongoing negotiations and i think that giuliani and trumps legal team are not saying no because they dont want to provoke a Subpoena Fight which would be a big legal battle and which is where this is probably headed if they give a concrete know. At the same time Rudy Giuliani has thrown up so many obstacles to a potential interview that at some point it will be a deal breaker. If he says sure, well do the interview but you cant ask about things that are the reason for the interview, at some point the interview is not worthwhile for the mueller team so we dont
know the full extent of the interactions Behind The Scenes, we know what giuliani tells us which he is telling for pr purposes, political purposes among other things but i dont we dont know whether and how this may or may not happen. Jackie, whos winning the pr fight here . Set aside the legal fight. Whos winning the for fight . Thats what i was about to add to what molly pointed out. It seems like giuliani is as much a height man as a lawyer and he said the quiet part aloud, saying this might have to do with politics that if they dont is if the president doesnt cooperate, if this keeps going on that would be good for the president. So thats as much giulianis strategy here as as what hes doing Behind The Scenes legally. All right, ladies, thank you. Jackie, molly, have a great weekend. Appreciate you being with me. Look at this man trying to save his home by watering it down with a garden hose, police told him he had to leave. Nick watts is with me in lake elsinore, california people are desperate to do whatever they can. They are, poppy, its not the size of the fire, its the location causing the problem. If you can look behind me, weve been watching if the ps few hours choppers dropping water on this hillside thats now smoking. It was in flames and we are in a neighborhood. There are seven and a half thousand homes currently under threat and the fire it moves unpredictab unpredictabl unpredictably. Luckily they had dropped a lot of flame retardant, that helped but it was boots on the ground,
firefighters scrambling up the hills in 90 plus degree temperatures trying to save those homes and they managed there and this morning so farther doing well here. It was a big fire in a gulch just over there feet from the back of homes. That has been damped down for now. Still seven and a half thousand homes are under threat. More than 20,000 people have been put under mandatory evacuation. Others hanging tight ready to go hoping they can stay. Authorities believe this fire was started unpurpose. A 51yearold man is facing multiple charges that could see him spend the rest of his life in jail. Poppy . Nick watt, thank you for being there. Two Asylum Seekers fighting deportation were put on a plane and sent back to el sam dorr while their case was in the middle of being heard. A federal judge erupted, ordering that plane be returned back to the United States. Judge Emmitt Sullivan threatened to hold u. S. Attorney general Jeff Sessions in contempt. The mother and her daughter go by the name of carmen, thats the mothers name, came to the u. S. From el salvador with her daughter after what she says were two decades of horrific sexual abuse by her husband and Death Threats from a violent gang. Diane gallagher joins me now with the latest. The federal judge agreed with the aclu then the government had to scramble to bring the plane home. Scramble might be an understatement. The judge erupted at the government asking why would you do this you just spirited them
off to another country in the middle of their hearing. He gave them two options, you can turn the plane around in the air or as soon as they land in el salvador you can bring them ba back. According to dhs, it was such a quick turnaround that carmen and her daughter never disembarked from the plane. As soon as it landed they turned back around. They landed in texas last night and have been ordered back to that dilley residential facil y facility. Is this just about these two women seeking asylum and doing it the legal way to see if theyre granted that . Or does this rule having broader implications for Asylum Seekers . Overall this is about those two and six other women being represented by the aclu in a specific case. Broadly the aclu is saying the
standards the Trump Administration is applying to asylum are unfair. People who were fleeing Domestic Violence were to be considered approved for asylum. Basically they efve said its not something that counts. The aclu is trying to get judges, the Legal Community and perhaps eventually the Trump Administration to remedy that, to change that, to ease those restrictions but as far as the judges ruling yesterday, that applies to those eight women represented in this particular case. Got it. And we have the Deputy Director of the aclu joining me to talk more about this. Diane, thank you for the reporting. I want to update you on an important story. A former wrestler from ohio state this morning is clarifying his comments he says about congressman jim jordan of ohio and whether he knew about the sexual abuse allegations against the team doctor decades ago when congressman jordan was an
assistant coach. A month ago this former wrestler by the name of mark coleman said there is no way that congressman jordan doesnt remember what happened unless he has got dementia or something. That was his statement then. Now coleman is clarifying to jean casarez saying he has no direct knowledge that the congressman knew about the allegations at all and heres what he told jean. Quote, maybe i spoke without thinking. Since ive said that it has consumed me 24 hours a day. I didnt like the way it was heading and the direction it was heading. More than 100 former students accused the former team doctor of sexual misconduct. Well keep you posted on that. Up next, a cnn exclusive from high above one of the most hotly contested regions in the world. Were talking about the south china sea. Were looking at images taken from a u. S. Find it exclusively at the home depot. So we know how to cover almost weve anything. St everything even vengeful vermin. Not so cute when theyre angry. And we covered it. Talk to farmers. Or, here. Kick your Antacid Habit with prilosec otc. One pill a day, 24 hours, zero heartburn. Leave immediately. That was one of the six warnings china gave a u. S. Military surveillance flight as it flew over the hotly disputed south china sea. Cnn was granted exclusive and rare access aboard that flight. It flew past four key islands where china has built up an extensive military presence. Lets go to ivan watson on board one of these flights. It must have been an incredible experience to see what is such a hotly contested region. To see Whats Going On and the controversy about this region has run deep and run long and china points its finger consistently at washington for what they say is escalating the tension. Remind us whats behind this. Yeah. Theres a clear dispute here, poppy. First of all, the u. S. Navy invited cnn, the only Real News Organization from the u. S. On board this reconnaissance flight and we went through the south
china sea where you have a bunch of Different Countries claiming the same area of maritime territory. China to stake its claim built enormous islands, built them on top of coral reefs. Islands that didnt exist a decade ago. As we flew past them we got warnings coming from the chinese military. Take a listen. U. S. Military aircraft this is chinese military. China has sovereignty. Leave immediately in order to avoid any misunderstanding. This is the United States naval aircraft conducting Military Activity beyond the
beyond the National Airspace of any coastal states. The u. S. Insists china doesnt have a right to claim almost all of this body of water that a third of the worlds shipping goes through. Its accused china of putting surfacetoair missiles on these islands. They monitor the fortification of these islands but the fact is the chinese look like theyre there to stay. We saw four man made islands. One had a man made harbor that had at least 85 ships just to give you a sense of the scale of this massive Land Reclamation project. Its striking. Ive obviously read about this for years but never have i seen Something Like i just witnessed. I know you have a piece coming up later today on the Situation Room with wolf. We look forward. Meantime, u. S. And north korean progress on denuclearization not progress right now. Still a standstill. According to a senior diplomat. North korea keeps rejecting u. S. Proposals to start the process calling them gangster like. Michelle kosinski is with me at the state department. What happened . We are being told that the u. S. Has made repeated multiple specific proposals for starting the process and proceeding down the path of complete denuclearization, including timelines for doing so but all of them so far have been rejected by north korea which considers them gangster like. So these sources say the u. S. Has been still looking for this big gesture from north korea which would be the form of it giving up a significant portion of its Nuclear Arsenal and in
the short term but that kim jongun is insisting he wont make any step or any move towards denuclearization until there is a big gesture on the part of the u. S. Sources believe that would be addressing kims Security Concer concerns. Likely hes looking for a Peace Proposal for the korean peninsula. Thats something the u. S. Said it would be open to but its looking for north korea to move first however kim jongun is looking for the u. S. To move first and hes insisting he wont make any move until he gets some kind of commitment like that thus things are stalled poppy. Michelle kosinski, important reporting from your sources, thank you for the update. Up next, President Trump says its time to change the criminal Justice System in this country and he is doing something about it. He brought together a big group of people who can make a lot of change in this country yesterday. Well dive into it with van jones next. And the Alzheimers Association is going to make it happen. But we wont get there without you. Join the fight with the Alzheimers Association. Population and spends 60 billion a year Running State and federal prisons. The president has asked congress to al g allocate 250 million o five years to work with inmates on drug treatment, skills training and education. More needs to be done. Van jones, political commentator and host the van jones and the cofounder of cut 50, a National Bipartisan criminal Justice Initiative is with me. I was so glad to see this happen yesterday. Im so glad youre here to talk about it. Is this going to be the white house thats able to achieve meaningful criminal Justice Reform . Its conceivablconceivable. I think when trump picked Jeff Sessions to lead the Attorney Generals office, hes not been a supporter of reform. Thats a very scary and very bad signal. What that obscured is the Republican Party has been moving in a healthy direction on criminal Justice Policy for about ten years. 2010, that tea party wave, a lot of republican governors got ahold of states with really bad budgets. Th they had to medicatioake a deci. Rick perry said were going to get smarter. They closed prisons in texas and brought crime down. You have a bunch of people in the Republican Party, newt gingrich, why are we spending this much money making people worse and we could spend less money making people better. We invited Beginni Ed Newt G the show to talk with you. He couldnt. Whats interesting is both Political Party vs a reasies ha to be concerned. Christian conservatives saying where is the liberals. On this issue of all issues theres Common Ground. A lot of Common Ground. Ive times more africanamericans are incarcerated than whites. You have 12 of the population is africanamerican. 33 of the Prison Population is africanamerican. Yet, this could not, did not happen under the first black president in this country but may happen now. Some would say is there an irony in that. Whats your read . President barack obama, general holder did a lot of woshwork trying to make changes and did make some changes. Some of those sessions rolled back. There was a bipartisan momentum to get. N it done and the clock n out. Jared kushner, his father wents to prison so he understands this. Hes built up a coalition of voices to get something done. Its called the first step act. Its not as big as what the obamas were trying to get done but you have someone in the kwhous. It passed the house. Its being debated. The issue with first step act, it has those on the left, and others opposing it. They say it didnt go far enough. It didnt address mandatory minim minimum. Announcer minimum sentences. A are you hopeful . I am hopeful. They came together to try to get something done in the house. They say you have to get a camel
through a key hole. You have to get Everything Possible until this bill or youll never get it done. They were smart saying lets get something done. Even if its modest to break this log jam. To break this idea we cant Work Together on anything. Even people whom are poor and addicted. We cant even help them because were so mad at each other. Once that log jam was broken. People in the senate are saying we should do this and do a bit more. I think the thing about this be issue is, i dont care if youre conservative, liberal black, this more you look at our prison system, the more you find stupid. Why you spending this much to hurt people. You probably will get some sentencing reform. Ij you wi i think you will get some positive steps. Youll get a proof point that we
can Work Together. Can you imagine in that money went into the public school. If teachers didnt have to buy notebooks with their own money. Van, before you go, the show, who do you have on .
