At a community college. Later, to tour an illinois steel plant that added jobs in the wake of the new u. S. Tariffs on china. Lets go to the white house where we find joe johns this morning. Whats Mission Number one for the white house today in illinois and iowa . Reporter theres a couple of misses, i think, poppy. One of the things i think that is important to say is that iowa and illinois are two of the largest soy bean producing states in the country. Soy bean producers have been hurt as a result of the president s tariffs. He needs to go out and sell what he sees as the administrations high points on these back and forth trade issues with the european union. The way the administration is progressing on that, number one, they have some news from just last night with the president of the european commission, and that news essentially that they are going to have no new tariffs at this time and try to agree to negotiate to stop the trade feuding and end the problems for some of the farmers out there. The second thing, of course, the president going to iowa has this 12 billion aidpackage that was just announced. They want to sell that. Even though its clear the farm bureau does not like tariffs. We heard this morning from the treasury secretary here at the white house telling reporters not to characterize this aid package as a bailout, even though thats what the headlines have been saying. On to granite city and steel, thats a good news story there, the president essentially saying that they fired up the furnaces again and he is helping steel producers. Always good to see jobs added. We will have the illinois senator on in a few minutes. A makeup after a breakup . It happens. We have been through it. This one between the president and the european and the president of the european commission. The president just called the eu a foe a few weeks ago. Now all is well with a hug and embrace and a kiss and a rose garden announcement after three hours of negotiations yesterday afternoon. President trumps writes, obviously the european union, is represented by yours truly, love each other, so was there a major breakthrough on trade . Sort of. There was a deal to make a deal down the road. Lets talk about it with jackie kusinich, patrick heely, and Richard Quest is here. Thank you all for being with me. Richard, let me begin with you. Lest we forget, he called President Trumps tariffs stupid. Now all is well. He would maintain they were stupid and they are still stupid. The question needs to be asked, what was this deal arranged . Is this another example of north korea where you have got a lot of good sounding words but nobody is really sure what just happened. I think the New York Times summed it up beautifully this deal when it said were now sure whether this is actually a breakthrough or just a smokescreen. What it does do, from the europeans point of view they won here, by the way. The europeans they won . Oh, yeah. Europeans won. They got the auto tariffs off the table. This was a threat from the president , jackie, to institute very high what could be crippling tariffs on european autos coming into the united states. When you look at who wins here, yes, this looks good for the president. But what does he really gain out of this if it doesnt materialize into actually zero tariffs back and forth . The appearance that something got done. I mean, thats unless something actually happens, which we dont know if it will, as richard pointed out. We could have a north korea situation where the president could hold it up and say, look, i have these pictures of me and the eu making nice together. And yet just kind of go with that. Dont believe your eyes and ears. Believe what im saying, which is what he said this week. Also, it doesnt help farmers who are relying on china to buy their soy beans. That is going to cripple more farms than, say, what was going on with the eu. China is such a consumer of u. S. Soy beans. That still isnt fixed. Theyre trying to fix that with this bailout, which members of congress dont like. But theyre throwing up their hands and say, its better than nothing. Theres a big mess here. He didnt say that those the auto tariffs are off the table. Theyre just paused for now. He could bring them back any time he wants. All the tariffs in place a week ago are still in place. Patrick, one thing i find interesting is that ceos of the American Companies have been ringing the alarm bell for weeks, whether its general motors, cocacola just this week. But its been the increase, i think, in what we heard from farmers. I had a minnesota soy bean farmer on here who was a trump voter who have been more vocal about this in the last few days that seem to have turned the president more than all of the ceos. What do you think . Right. I think the farmers are very upset. These are states that donald trump considers his base. These are key states for him that he thinks of like iowa, certainly, the dakotas, ohio, pennsylvania. Particularly these soy bean rich states that have really Competitive Senate races this fall. He is definitely paying attention to it. What you are hearing from the farmers as well as from the ceos is that they want more markets. They want more markets to compete in. They want sort of free trade agreements. They dont want things like bailouts or shortterm assistance. To jackies point, sort of the deal or i guess sort of arrangement on soy beans to europe is nothing compared to what the farmers can get and want to get from china. At least right now, it just feels like this is classic President Trump who believes that he wins when he sort of sounds tough week after week after week, he sounds blustery, sounds like he is standing up for america. And then he sort of slides into sort of these negotiations that maybe just negotiation to negotiate. He sounds like he is a deal maker. He doesnt seem to realize that people looking at this just sort of shrug and say its bluster. What do we have to look for so the American People can tell whats beyond the bluster, what the actual what is the deal when it happens . I have had 30 years covering trade talks. I can tell you two things. They are difficult. They always go down to the last second. Nobody really wins until the last moment. This yesterday was nothing more than smokescreen, whitewash and bandaid. It solves the problems for the europeans. It gives the president something to trumpet to his base. It doesnt advance the free trade agenda very far at all. Jackie, so whats next . Whats the next play here for the president . If you are xi and looking at what happened, how does that, if it does, change your calculus when you look at this . As you pointed out, it matters more to the farmers in minnesota and iowa about their soy beans being sold to china and making money in that market than in the european market. If you are china, you will grow soy beans. You can do it yourself. Not import u. S. Soy beans. The losers here really are these farmers. If you are President Trump, you talk a big game. He is good at that. Right now, people are believing him. They might not believe their ears. They might not believe their eyes. They will believe it when it hits their pocketbooks. Trump is benefitting the fact that the average american isnt feeling this right now, beyond the Certain Industries that are being hit. Thats not going to be forever. Once that hits we will see. The midterm elections are a spot they are feeling it. You look at whirlpool, this company has most of its factories in iowa and ohio. The cost of washing machines is up 20 from a year ago. That is true. I think jackie is right in terms of the farmers. Right now, they have known this was coming for sort of for months. Some farmers have adjusted production. Some are in wait and see mode. The big pinch on that end is still to come. Whats so interesting, poppy we have seen this narrative play out again and again is that for a lot of republicans, theyre still willing to sort of justify and rationalize what President Trump is doing because they still feel like at the end of the day, either culturally or identitywise, that he is still kind of he represents their interests. Unless it really starts having extreme damage, im not sure ma ch im not sure they would let it get that far. Its been hard to see a trump policy move republicans, even farmers away from the president. There you go. Thank you. Still to come, secretary of state mike pompeo goes toe to toe with lawmakers from both parties demanding answers on the president s one on one meeting with putin. Did he really tell us anything though . Michakchael cohens lawyer his client wants to reveal the truth. Could the release of the aud audiotape land him in trouble . Facebook fallout. The stock taking a dive this morning. Why this is happening. We will explain. Our new, hot, fresh breakfast will get you the readiest. buzzer sound holiday inn express. Be the readiest. President trump in the air and midwest bound. He is set to make a few stops to calm concerns over his tariffs. He will be in iowa and illinois. This comes as the administration reaches its deadline today to reunite families separated at the southern border. With me now is dick durbin of illinois. Thanks for being here. Good to be with you. You are the minority whip. You are one of two democrats in the senate leading negotiations on immigration. As i said, today is the deadline for the families that were separated to be reunited. Beyond that, big picture, when it comes to an actual longterm solution on immigration in this country, has the senate hit an impasse . It has under this administration. Just remember five years ago, we passed a bipartisan, comprehensive Immigration Reform bill. I worked on it with john mccain, with jeff flake, with lindsey graham, with marco rubio. It was a bipartisan effort. It passed with 6 vote 68 votes house. Theres not an opportunity with this administration to do what needs to be done, comprehensive, bipartisan Immigration Reform. You have said three meetings in five weeks. What should the American People honestly expect . Nothing . Nothing. All the work is being done by a federal judge in san diego. Thank goodness it is. Think about this, a month ago the department of health and Human Services put out a press release and said we know where all the kids are. This is a wellcoordinated response. Earlier this week, they admitted there are hundreds hundreds of these kids that they still dont know how to reunite with their parents. Some of their parents have been deported. The 37 kids they cant find the parents, these kids are adrift in a bureaucratic sea. We will have a live report from the border later. Let me ask you about the president heading to illinois. He will tour a granite city steel factory there where jobs are being added. Thats good news. You talked about the soy bean farmers whose crops are down 20 , they are being hit hard by the tariffs. Hopefully, things will get better for them. We saw the deal to make a deal with the president a. I stand with the Steel Workers. For 20 years, they have been exploited by dumbing of cheap steel in the united states, brazil, japan, china. The list goes on. We have not responded as we should have. Im glad the Steel Workers are back at work. Make no mistake, this policy when it comes to trade has gone way beyond fixing the obvious problems. The chinese problems and the like. What we have now is a threat to our export markets in many different areas. Who would have identified canada as the culprit as this administration has when it comes to the trade war . I wouldnt. We have our differences, but canada is a major export country for the state of illinois. Let me ask you about russia. We heard from secretary of state mike pompeo yesterday. There was bipartisan outrage at him for what senators believed was not getting answers to what the president and Vladimir Putin discussed behind closed doors. Here is how pompeo responded. President trump believes that two Great Nuclear powers should not have a contentious relationship. He believes now is the time for direct communication. The president is entightled to have private meetings. Does he have a point that the president does have the right to conduct Foreign Policy as he sees appropriate . Of course he does. The obvious question raised by that committee over and over again, what do we do whether the president s Foreign Policy is different than the administration or the nations Foreign Policy . That was pompeos dilemma. He says its not. It is. It clearly is. Just listen as the president was mesmerized by putin, stood up and talked about his strong and powerful denial that he was involved in our last election campaign. We know better. We know better because our intelligence agencies, department of defense and others have told us not only the russians did it in the last election, theyre going do it again. I believe dan coats, my former Republican Senate colleague. He said the red lights are blinking. I think they are. This administration is not taking it seriously. Are you relieved to learn that summit 2. 0 with Vladimir Putin is no longer happening at the white house in the fall as was discussed . If so, when is an appropriate time for Vladimir Putin to come to the white house . Of course im relieved. After that performance in helsinki, we better think long and hard about the next meeting between Vladimir Putin and donald trump. The president has to come into these meetings prepared. I can tell you, Vladimir Putin is prepared. The first meeting putin had with obama when he was elected as president , the first meeting, putin opened the meeting with a 58minute speech. He is a domineering force at these meetings. Donald trump was boweled awa ee bowled away. Let me ask you about kavanaugh. Would you advise your red state democrats to oppose kavanaugh at the expense of their own seat if it comes them their senate seat, if it means a smaller democratic minority in the senate . Is that something you believe they should stomach in order to oppose him . It isnt a question what have i believe. Its a question of what they believe. They believe this is an historic choice for the future of the Supreme Court for more than a generation. At issue is not only the future of roe versus wade and a womans right in america to have access to health care that she and her family need, it goes to more basic issues. We have a nominee in Brett Kavanaugh who said things about the power of the presidency that are frightening at this moment in history. He needs to answer the hard questions. Speaking to them, speaking to the senators, do you believe that they will oppose him even if its at the expense of their own seat . I can tell you for sure, because i know each one of them. I respect them. They will vote their conscience. Theyre not going to be listening to their colleagues or the political pundits. They are going to do what they think is right. Senator, thank you for being here today. Thank you. Still ahead, Facebook Stock plummeting this morning. Facebook shares plummeting this morning on track for their biggest selloff yet. 120 billion in market value wiped out at the open. Lets go to the floor of the new york stock exchange. This is a company that had a 42 jump in revenue. The top line numbers look good. Investors are freaked out. They are. This is the single one of the biggest hits to market cap we have seen in a single day. Its no surprise that this company has faced controversy for enabling the spread of bad information, for enabling potential election meddling and worst of all for violating user privacy. But investors did not have a window into how that would impact the bottom line until today. To your point, it missed both on sales and on a key metric, which is user growth. Making matters worse, the Company Executive said, look, dont expect things to get better later on in the year. Add to that the fact that facebooks chief competitor google reported results that beat expectations. Its just bad all around for facebook. That said, there are investors who say, look, the company has other products that have has potential for growth, like its messenger, like instagram. There are investors and analysts sticking by the stock. Certainly, a very rough ride for facebook today. I know also very quickly that a federal judge in maryland has just ruled that a lawsuit against the president having do with potential conflicts of interests, it can proceed. How significant is that . This is a very interesting case. At issue is whether or not the president violated an anticorruption clause in the constitution by accepting foreign payments through his companies. Its not significant, the ruling yesterday, the decision yesterday is not significant because it tells us either way whether the president may have violated the constitution. Its significant because this case moves to the discovery phase now, if the government doesnt find a way to stop that from happening, which means that trump may have to release some Financial Information about his operation, potentially his tax returns. That will reignite despite in addition to the news value of that coming public, it will reignite the debate over whether or not he should be holding an interest in these businesses. As you noted, its hard for the government to fight off discovery demands in a case like this. Thanks for being there. She will be there all day. The public airing of Michael Cohens secretly recorded conversation with then candidate donald trump could be a legal headache for Michael Cohen if he wants to cooperate with the feds if charges are brought. Cohens legal team did not notify the u. S. Attorneys office they would be taking this tape to the media. So the Southern District, not happy, that this gets out there. What could it legally mean for Michael Cohen . Im not sure it means that much legally. The prosecutors would not be happy that evidence in their case is being discussed. Cohen, he is not cooperating yet from what we understand. He is not charged yet. Exactly. They could cooperate him before charging him. Its possible he is in a gray zone where he may be looking for cooperation. We have seen it publically reported he said he may be willing to cooperate. If he were a cooperator, the Southern District would be furious. His lawyer is either trying to basically come out and say, he is willing to come out and tell the truth and he will be forthright, or its also really a candid effort to push back the narrative that comes out publically against him. For the prosecutors, this isnt a great thing. Were learning this morning from the Washington Post reporting that there are 100 tapes seized from Michael Cohen when the fbi raided his office and his apartment. This tape that we have heard with the president and Michael Cohen was taken in september, two months before the election. Assuming a bunch of the other tapes were taken before the election, why would Michael Cohen then in good graces with the president , not seeming like anything is up, record 100 conversations at least . This is completely i do not understand this at all. Of all the lawyers i know i have been practicing state, local and federal for years now. I dont know anyone else who tapes conversations. This is highly unusual. Its almost like an insurance policy in case something happens that he has a record of those conversations, perhaps. Its totally legal . Because its new york and one Party Consent state. New york is a one Party Consent. The thing thats interesting is that if cohen did have other clients during the past decade, connecticut is a two party state, pennsylvania is a two party state. Anyone thats in one of those two party states, this would be illegal. By the way, the only reason this is out is because the president s legal team, they waved their Attorney Client privilege on this, which is confounding to a lot of people. To be honest, there are hundreds of other tapes, some of those may be privileged. Its possible there are other trump conversations. Remember that for you to have a legal privilege, it has to be that you areing legal advice and counsel. Not just because he is a lawyer. They may have wave e waived because they dont think it exists. Any claim by the president that this tape could be possibly illegal . I dont see that its illegal. I think its extraordinary for a lawyer do this. Its a terrible practice. Lawyers should not be taping clients. It doesnt matter who your client is. The fact that he sometimes was representing trump legally as a lawyer and sometimes not makes it more he was wearing two hats in some circumstances, means he shouldnt be taping. Thank you. Today is the deadline for the Trump Administration to reunite parents and children separated. Rosa flo flores is in texas wit more. This is when the judge said thousands need to be reunited. Is it going to happen . Reporter the bottom line is that not every child that was separated will be reunited by deadline. The government will say that all eligible children with eligible parents will be able to be reunited. The ones that are not eligible will not. Those are the controversial buckets, because the parents that are not eligible have criminal backgrounds, perhaps a dui. They might have been released from u. S. Custody or they could have been deported. So theyre not in the country. I want to share with you whats going on behind me. This literally just popped up moments before our live shot. This is a group here from the valley. Theyre called lupe. They have been chanting literally moments before our live shot the community is furious. This group here lab working. They have done hunger strikes, marches against the separation of families and for the reunification of families. Again, this popping up moments ago on the day, the deadline for the government to reunite the families. Not every child will be reunited by deadline. Before you go, cnn has obtained an internal report that shows the Trump Administration was warned that ending u. S. Protection for more than 300,000 Central Americans would actually strengthen gangs that the president blasts. What do you know about this report . Reporter that report also showed that it would increase illegal immigration. This is a huge issue and a huge worry for these families from Central American countries and haiti. Bottom line, when these families get deported, sent back to their countries, they are fresh blood for these gangs. We have seen the thousands of children and parents who have fr fled to the united states. Imagine sending back immigrants with u. S. Citizen children, those gangs are going to target them. Thats why these families are so worried and so concerned. Thank you for that important reporting. Keep us posted throughout the day. A controversial mining project that was all but killed by the Obama Administration is moving forward under President Trump. Pebble mine in alaska could be the largest copper and gold mine in the world. It sits a few miles from the largest lake in alaska, which is the nursery of the states famous salmon fishery. Critics say the project could kill the salmon population and harm the environment. Bill weir is here with more. This is part three. We went up there a couple years ago to do this story. It looked like the fishermen and native tribes and nature lovers had beaten back this idea. It was too close for comfort. What is the nursery of the last great salmon run. Then came President Trump and scott pruitt. Now the debate is raging over what is more valuable, the minerals we need for our devices in our lives, or this wonder of renewable resource, this salmon run. Its a contentious fight. We thought we would give you a look at what is at stake. Reporter this is a Beach Landing on a battleground. No bombs or bullets, thankfully. Just gorgeous quiet. But that little cam holds a band of brothers determined to defend it from invasion. What happens if a bear comes for a drink right now . Just stop. Reporter among them is drew hamilton, a biologist and guide for the World Wildlife fund who makes a living getting cozy with grizzlies. It takes a couple days out here to ease into it and realize the bears are just part of the landscape. Theyre going about their business. As long as you dont mess with them, theyre going to leave you alone. Reporter in a nearby national park, my team learned that this part of alaska is n nirvana for bears, eagles, wolves. All made possible by salmon. Tens of millions surge into southern alaska each summer to spawn, feeding every form of life, including a multibillion dollar fishing and Tourism Industry dependent on this. We have bear tracks. We have wolf, fox tracks. Reporter why drew worries less about wild animals and the human beings coming towards us on the beach. We work for a surveying company. Reporter they are hesitant to admit theyre doing work for the pebble mine, one of the most controversial projects. This is where it all started. Reporter about 80 miles from the beach, a Canadian Mining Company discovered enough buried treasurer to propose the biggest gold and copper mine in the world. But when the epa under obama determined blasting it open and digging it up would threaten the fishery, stock in Northern Dynasty tanked. Partners bailed. The company sued. Congratulations, mr. President. Reporter a rever ssaal of fortunes. Scott pruitt met with pebble and then settled the lawsuits. Whether cnn revealed that, there was an outcry in alaska. Most fishermen, tribes, even the governor, are opposed to the mine and senator Lisa Murkowski said she would never trade salmon for gold. But Northern Dynasty refuses to give up. The latest plan includes a 100 mile natural gas pipeline that would run past that active volcano into a massive port system on the beach. Imagine ships and semitrucks, instead of bears and foxes. Then a 35mile road through some of the most pristine wilderness in the state. Since scott pruitt resigned, the new man is andrew wheeler, a former lobbyist at one of pebble mines law firms. He declined our request for an interview. This is in the roosevelt room. Thats gore and clinton. Reporter the ceo of pebble was happy to talk. Nobody can guarantee there wont be an accident. But we have done a hell of a lot to minimize the possibility of there being an accident on this site. Reporter pebble mine would sit in a wetland prone to ear earthquakes. The biggest worry is a dam failure like this one which sent a lake full of acidic waste downstream. He says its so far from bristol bay, thats a risk he can live with. If there is an accident it will kill fish for about 20 miles down the north fork. Thats it. For ten years. It will come back naturally. Reporter utahs Bingham Canyon is the biggest mine in the world. Pebble has enough wealth to dig one three times bigger. After all the resistance, those plans have been cut in half. You shrink the footprint of the mine to get the permit and then once you spend billions to built the port and pipelines and roads, you say, we need to expand. Theres a lot of gold and copper and silver in the ground out there. We do not have any current plans to expand beyond what were talking about with this permit. It wouldnt surprise me if somebody, us or someone else doesnt do that at some point in the future. They are talking about putting a 175mile gash across this habitat. Reporter drew sees this first piece of survey equipment as the beginning of the end of this wilderness as we know it. What do you say to the argument that this means jobs, this means an infusion into the alaska economy . There are already jobs here. Look at homer and the bear viewing industry. There are millions of dollars being made here. You look at the other side of the mountain, there are tens, millions of dollars being generated in a fashion that can be sustained for decades and deca decades. Why cant we keep that going . Reporter he and his fellow bear lovers will try to stop the invasion. But the clock is ticking. Army engineers rush to review plans, pebble hopes to get their permit and a wave of new investors by the fall of 2020. Right before Donald Trumps next election. To be fair, there are tribes who would appreciate roads and new jobs in that part of the state. Its really a crossroads of the last frontier as to which is more important. Any indication they wouldnt get this permitting . These things have been moving quickly. The governor actually asked the army corps of engineers to stop. Dont do the Environmental Impact stud tly. We begin this hour with new details on the falling out between President Trump and Michael Cohen, his former personal attorney who once bragged he would take a bullet for his brash client. Cnn has learned cohen ago nie d ago niezed for weeks. Cohen provided cnn with a secret reporting
