Loyalty a number of times in this interview, whether he would put trump first, whether he would go out of his way to protect his former boss. Very telling was this one thing he said about how he is not going to be used anymore and he is not the bad guy in this story. Take a look. He said, i will not be a punching bag as part of anyones defense strategy. I am not a villain in the story, and i will not allow others to try to depict me that way. Very striking because up until this point, especially since the fbi raided his home and office a couple months ago, he has not been saying a lot. The fact he is coming out to say this is where i stand and im not going to be the guy that takes a bullet for President Trump, that tone of defensiveness is very, very interesting. His tone when it comes to the fbi and russia investigation very interesting. He is distancing himself from President Trump on two major issues. First as you said is this fbi raid when they came in and raided his home, his office, his hotel room. Trump, of course, was very critical of this at the time. You might recall that he said this was disgraceful, this was an attack on our country. Now cohen is saying, he supports the fbi doing this and sort of going through due process. He says, i dont agree with those who demonize or vilify the fbi. I respect the fbi as an institution as well as their agency. Even said the agents were respectful and courteous when they did the raids. He is speaking out on the Robert Mueller russia investigation which, of course, President Trump has repeatedly said is a witch hunt. Cohen is saying this. He says, i dont like the term witch hunt. As an american, i repudiate any foreign governments attempt to interfere in our democratic process. He said accepting putins denial is unsustainable. I choose to believe our intelligence agencies. Of course, the underlying suggestion in all of this is that Michael Cohen is not on the same team as donald trump. He is, of course, under criminal investigation. There have been no charges brought so far. What we dont know right now is whether he is willing to strike a deal and whether investigators will want that. The context and tone of all of this is very interesting heading into all of that. Gives us lots to talk about. Thank you. I want to bring in paul callen. Theres so much to look at here. The most surprising, i would argue, is the fact that Michael Cohen sat down for this interview at all. I would imagine as his counsel, you would say, not the best idea. Yeah. Its really shocking. I say that because Defense Attorneys always say to their clients, do not speak to the press. You never know whats going to happen in an interview. The client can get himself into trouble. While on the one hand, he is disassociating himself from major themes of the Trump Administration, that we cant trust our intelligence sources about the russians, that the fbi is inherently corrupt and not trustworthy. He is embracing these agencies in his statement. He is emphasizing that he is well aware of his family and his need to be loyal to them and not anybody else. It looks to me, erica, like he is firing a warning shot across the bow of President Trump. At the same time, he is trying to clean up his public image and create sort of a warm and friendly Michael Cohen, which hasnt been his image previously. No. It has not. Its interesting in terms of the warning shot, too, very clear that family comes first. It also stood out that he said, after going through his wife, daughter, son, my family and country first. Thats a clear message as well. Yes. Thats an absolutely clear message. I will toell you one other clea message. That as of this moment, he is not cooperating with federal prosecutors. I say that because, when a witness is cooperating with federal prosecutors, first thing theyre going to tell him is, keep your mouth shut and talk only to us. You notice, we didnt see general flynn making public statements, papadopoulos making public statements when they made a deal, or gates for that matter as well. I think thats an indication he is shopping a deal but he doesnt have one yet. Shopping a deal, maybe letting prosecutors know and the president know as well. President trump tweeting a couple of months ago his clear thoughts on anyone who was going to decide to, in his view, flip, saying that ultimately these people would just be liars, im paraphrasing, people will flip if the government lets them out of trouble, even if it means lying or making up stories. I dont see michael doing that. Im not clear if he doesnt see him working with the government, lying. Jeffrey toobin was clear that the government does not entice people to lie as some sort of an arrangement. Its important that we reiterate that. I saw jeffrey this morning when he made that statement, that federal prosecutors dont lie. I do a lot of defense work. I think they do lie from time to time. I dont think they set out to lie. They choose to believe what will help their case. Like a lot of prosecutors do. Sometimes they make mistakes and they accept the testimony of somebody who is lying as truthful. Lets just say they might make a mistake, okay, and endorse the testimony of a liar. I dont give federal prosecutors a clean bill of Health Across the board. I think jeffrey talked about another thing i think when he spoke thats very important. Cohen is being investigated by the Southern District of new york for local charges. They probably, i think, have to do with his taxi medallions. Theres been a huge controversy with taxi medallions and their fight with uber er with uber i. Cohen was involved in that industry. Im betting the Southern District investigation is focused on that. I wonder how much information he really has to give about trump as president. Most of his information is probably trump as businessman before he became president. That might be trumps achilles heel, things that went on in the Trump Organization before the president was running. So many questions about that. Just want to get your take on this. He was asked about the 130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels. He replied, i want to answer. One day i will answer. For now, i cant comment further on advice of my counsel. He was asked whether the president had directed him to make that payment or promised to reimburse him. We know that question is not going away. What does his nonanswer say . Thats the one area where cohen knows that there are pending federal cases. Remember, daniels lawyer filed many things. The stay could be lifted on the lawsuits and the attorney for Stormy Daniels could go into court saying he is revealing his testimony publically. Why cant i take his deposition . Very wisely his attorneys have said, keep quiet, completely, about the Stormy Daniels controversy to keep yourself out of court. Not quiet on the other stuff. Thank you. Good seeing you. Happening overnight, mexicos next president obrador winning in a landslide. The left wing former mayor of mexico city promising sweeping changes including a new relationship with the United States. He sa its his relationship with President Trump who has many wondering how they will get along. Both far apart when it comes to the border wall, even nafta. Joining me is leyla santiago. Good morning. Reporter good morning. Obrador is known as amlo here, a former mayor of mexico city. He has run for president of mexico twice before this. This round, his message really resonated with voters because for them, this was about corruption, tackling that big issue, along with violence. Mexico at an alltime high on homicides right now. Also a big factor here is the fact that this will change the dynamic between mexico and the United States with this new president. Mexicos president elect has said that he wants a friendship with the u. S. , cooperation for development and Mutual Respect on both sides. President trump also tweeted congratulating him last night saying he is looking forward to working with him. Two very polite initial statements as they launch this new relationship. I gotta tell you, theres some big issues on the table right now that could become very contentious. Theres immigration. Amlo wrote a book called listen trump. He fought back on the idea of the wall saying theres no way this will resolve any issues. He is very much against it. When it comes to trade, nafta, that Free Trade Agreement between canada, mexico and the u. S. , he originally was very critical of it. With the campaign and some pressure from Business Leaders here, he has said that he plans to keep it in place. Much like trump, he has said that this deal needs to be better for his country. A lot of analysts really say that these two leaders are actually very similar in terms of being in line of their country first. He said its mexico first. We will see how this new dynamic plays out as they move forward with some very big issues. Leyla santiago, thank you. As we know, trade, a source of growing tension between mexico and the United States. Now were getting a closer look at the white houses thinking on u. S. Trade policy. An official telling cnn the Trump Administration drafted a bill that would move the u. S. Away from World Trade Organization principals and give the president more power to change policies on his own. That shows exactly what this white house is thinking about these big global trade agreements and big global trade obligations. The United States has spent 30 years pursuing. The president is mistrustful of them. He thinks america can get a better deal. People think its unrealistic to pull away from the wto. What is that . Its 166 nations or so who together have collective rules about trade, about discriminating against trading partners and about tariffs and how high they can be set and limits on tariffs. The United States goes to the wto when theres a complaint. More often than not, the United States wins when it goes to that governing body. The president is distrustful of the wto. We have seen that in many other of the big global alliances the president questions. This comes in a really important week here. The word of the week is escalation. Maybe retaliation. Those two big words. Yesterday, you saw canada retaliate against the u. S. In its steel and aluminum tariffs and impose 12. 5 billion on its own. Big tariffs on 40 plus steel products. Then this week, you will hear by the end of the week we will know and see the United States putting tariffs on 34 billion worth of chinese goods. The chinese say they will retaliate as well. Again, retaliation and escalation. The big part of the story, so important to watch, the Trump Administration has ordered an official investigation into National Security and imports of foreign automobiles. You could see this be a really big new front in the trade war. Already, the europeans have said, if the u. S. Tries to restrict imports or raise tariffs on imports of foreign cars into the United States, there would be retaliation, up to 300 billion on other u. S. Goods. On several fronts this is a very big week in a potential global trade war. Thank you. Still to come, its t minus seven days. The countdown is on. For what . Abby phillip is at the white house. We hear he is working the phones. Have there been any inperson interviews that we know of . Reporter we dont have fly indication that the president actually interviewed anybody yet. He did say to reporters on friday that he would. Im told by a source that didnt actually happen. The interviews are expected to happen this week, in part because theres not very much time, just seven days between now and when the president expects to announce this pick before he leaves for europe. He has narrowed his original list of 25 potential candidates down to about five. He said he may interview up to seven for this post. Clearly, the white house moving as quickly as they can to get this done and over to the senate. On that list of people are several people who have ties to Justice Anthony kennedy who is leaving his post on the Supreme Court. One that has tied to Justice Scalia who died a few years ago. These are people with top pedigrees in the legal world. The president , according to the washington post, telling his aides, he wants his potential nominees to be exceptionally kwau p qualified. He wants them to have top tier legal pedigrees. One of the main issues that were looking at here is the issue of abortion. This is one that is central to a lot of democrats who are worried about who the president might pick. Also to some moderate republicans, including republican Susan Collins from maine. Collins spoke to jake tapper on sunday. They said she believed roe versus wade, the foundational Supreme Court decision that establishes a right to abortion in the u. S. , she believes thats settled law. She would vote against a nominee who indicated that that person would seek to overturn roe versus wade. President trump hasnt said that he would ask about this issue of roe versus wade. We know the president is picking from a list of Supreme Court candidates who have all been vetted by a slew of conservative groups. Its very unlikely that any of those candidates are personally or professionally in support of abortion. For a lot of people on the conserve of it side, whether this question is asked or not, its almost a moot point. They have believe all of the candidates would be strong in their view on that issue of abortion. Abby phillip, thank you. Joining me to discuss further, Ranking Member of the judiciary committee, congressman. We know these things happen in the senate. I heard your reaction there to senator collins saying her take on this when she spoke with jake. You laughed when she said i want a justice who looks at this as settled law. The president said when it comes to marriage equality, i look at that as settled law. Its nonsense. The Supreme Court just ruled 54 a week and a half ago to overturn a 1977 decision that was settled law to hinder labor unions. They can talk about settled law. Anybody on that list from the Heritage Foundation and the Federalist Society is going to vote to overturn roe versus wade, vote to make abortion illegal, vote to make Union Organizing terrible, they will vote to privately ban states from any kind of reasonable gun legislation, theyre going to vote to use the First Amendment religious Liberty Klaus clause you cant enforce public accommodation to gay people. They are going to gut much of what we have learned. They are going to use the laws we have seen on the Affordable Care act, they started down the road of restricting the Commerce Clause and spending power so most minimum wage is in for economic regulation is declared unconstitutional. They will go back before the new deal. Those are concerns. The chances of a justice not only being nominated on monday but being confirmed in the senate prior to the november midterm elections, very high. Theres not a lot democrats can do at this point. This is going to be very powerful for the republicans in terms of energizing the vote. Are you concerned that it could have the opposite affect on democrats for november . No. I think it will energize democratic vote is energized. Its energized for a lot of reasons, because of the savage brutality of the Trump Administration with respect to immigrants, with family separation. Its energized because of the Trump Administrations attacks on the press, on all the institutions that support a free society. Our vote i think is very energized. I think the statistics are bearing that out. The republican vote, they will try to energize it by saying that President Trump is on the ballot, he will be impeached if the democrats get elected, which is not certain. They will try to energize about it by the saf anl savagery at t border. And they will try to energize it by the Supreme Court pick. Which will be interesting to see how they are successful or not on any of the points. When it comes to immigration, you were at a march over the weekend. There were chants of abolishing ice. Do you support abolishing ice . I think thats a distraction. The main point is we have to oppose the racist and savage antifamily and antiimmigration policy of the Trump Administration. Ice is a tool being misused by the Trump Administration. There are things you ought to reform about it. The main we can really change it. The main thing is the policy of the administration, what theyre doing. That as we know we will keep our eye on ball. You called for more on that. I want to be clear. Do not abolish ice but theres room for improvement . Im saying i think frankly whether you abolish ice is not the main question. You have to change it so it cant be misused the way its being misused. The main thing is to change the policies. Alexandra cortez in new york, she could join you in washington. She will join us. Very ro aggressigre progress. She said the Democratic Party is a big tent party. We have grown for lots of people. Yet theres this push toward more progressive policies. Is there room for everyone in there . Where do moderates go . Theres room for everyone. Im a progressive person. I always have been. Im happy for more progressive policies. We have more moderate people on the caucus. They have their say. Balance shifts from time to time. I think the country is basically going in a more progressive direction. People Want Better Health care. They want policies that will make sure that the increasing Economic Growth isnt only to the benefit of the people at the top, which is what has been going on. Do you think your fellow leadership sees it the way that you do . Theres room for more progressive policies in. I think so. Its very hard to unify around a clear message when you dont have the president or the majority leader in either house. Is that that sounds like an excuse. Why cant you . Because you cant control what people say. People will say different things. The press will pick up on people saying different things. Its very difficult for a party that is out of power to be perceived as having a clear message. I think we have several clear messages. Universal health care is one. Use the government to make sure that all the benefits do not go to the top is another clear message. Oppose tax cuts that the republican policy, we were all opposed to, which is basically have huge tax cuts almost all the benefits of which go to the top 1 . Then use the resulting deficit as an excuse to say we have to cut back on medicare and Social Security and medicaid, which is what theyre doing now. The Democratic Party is unified in opposing that and saying we want politics where the tax burden is less on low income people, more on high income people, more on corporations where you have higher Economic Growth but where the benefit of the growth is broadly distributed. We will be interested to see how that works out moving forward. Appreciate you taking the time to come in. Just last month, the world watched at kim jongun signed a denukization agreement with President Trump. Theres intel that kim has no plans to live up to that deal. And we welcome back gary, whos already won three cars, two motorcycles, a boat, and an r. V. I would not want to pay that insurance bill. Ill do what ive always done. Dream more, dream faster, and above all. Now, ill dream gig. Now more businesses, in more places, can afford to dream gig. Comcast, building americas largest gigspeed network. Kim jongun has no intention of participating in a full denuclearization program, at least for now. Thats the word just this morning from the Defense Intelligence agency. There was never an intention here it sounds like of denuclearization. Why agree to the summit . Is this all about playing the u. S. , playing President Trump . I think this was a show for the cameras. Kim jongun has already gotten a lot out of the summit, even though he hasnt gotten full sanctions relief. He traveled more in the past few weeks than he traveled ever in his life. He has been welcomed on world stages like any other leader. He is being recognized for what he has been able to achieve, including on the nuclear front. He has been able to show the word, look what i have been able to do. I have gotten a nuclear capability, despite sanctions and international pressure. An official telling cnn the Trump Administration is going to give north korea this list. This list of tasks that must be undertaken to begin denuclearization. How do you think north korea will respond . Does it even matter . Can anything that they respond with actually be trusted . Theres so many glaring double standards that we need to point them out. They impact this discussion. First, provocative behavior. The reports over the weekend and today are indicating that north korea isnt freezing its program. Its making improvements to its missiles, to its nuclear production. Remember that we have backed away from what north korea called our provocative behavior behavior, the military exercises. We penalized iran for lies they made years ago. I dont know if you remember where they talked about iran concealing activities several years ago. President trump used that as part of the reason why he backed away from the iran deal. Iran concealing activities is bad. North korea concealing activities while were supposedly negotiating with them is okay. That seems really off balance to me. What do you see as the ultimate goal for north korea . Its more than just the photo op and the sort of sense on the world stage that theres some legitimacy for kim jongun. Thats appealing. But theres more to this. I think he wants money. I think that we have already heard indications that china is more open to some kind of sanctions relief. He went to china right after the summit and supposedly asked for sanctions relief from china. We heard public statements by the administrationss last that china is mostly keeping up financial pressure. The more time that goes by, the more normalized kim jongun becomes on the world stage, the more likely it is that china and russia, his own patron, are going to be more amenable to lifting the financial pressure. Russia, thank you for the perfect segue. Learning this morning that President Trump and Vladimir Putin will meet one on one. Ahead of the summit in helsinki, one british official saying it could further strain the u. S. Relationship with the uk and other western allies. Do you agree . I do. I think this is a really bad staffing decision by the chief of staff and by john bolton. Its no secret that the president does not do well one on one with Vladimir Putin. There was a phone call that he had right after the election when he was on the phone with Vladimir Putin. No one could control him on that call. He congratulate ed vladimir put on an election victory despite the fact his staff told him not to. If he is sitting across the table from Vladimir Putin, who is a skilled negotiator, things could go off the rails. John bolton said the president will bring up russian meddling with Vladimir Putin during the summit. He said once before, he told me they didnt meddle and i believe him. Vladimir putin lies as easily as he breathes. What i would say in hope is that donald trump proves us wrong, raises this with Vladimir Putin and lays s out the consequencef putin keeps meddling. Interesting to see. Thank you. Democrats have a new rally cry. President trump is welcoming that cry with open arms saying the new call to abolish ice is working in his favor. Im a fouryearold ring bearer and now for the rings. With a bad habit of swallowing stuff. And if you dont have the right coverage, you could be paying for that pricey love band yourself. So get an allstate agent, and be better protected from mayhem. Like me. Lets fly, lets fly away just say the words and well beat the birds down to acapulco bay its perfect for a flying honeymoon they say come fly with me lets fly, lets fly away come fly with me lets fly, lets fly away booking a flight doesnt have to be expensive. Just go to priceline. Its the best place to book a flight a few days before my trip and still save up to 40 . Just tap and go. For the best savings on flights, go to priceline. Abolish ice, thats a new rally cry for two of the leading female voices. Here is the problem, President Trump loves that messaging, perhaps even more than the democrats. Joining me now, simone sanders. The president is saying, bring it on. It plays into his claims of democrats wanting open borders, then not caring and wanting a more lawless nation. Is this really the best way for democrats to go . You know, i think its a good question. The president lies about the Democratic Partys stance on immigration. No one is calling for open borders. In calls to abolish ice, which is a 15year organization, 15year entity, are not just rooted in flashy rhetoric. There have been documented cases from the dhs Inspector General that is noted widespread abuse in ice. Ice has repeatedly bucked administration policy, have ignored directives from secretary mattis on down the line. What democrats are saying, some of us, is that there are deepseeded issues with ice. I think we can get rid of it and start over with a different organization. This doesnt play into the hands of donald trump. The president would like us to think he is winning this argument. I beg to differ. On the side of republicans, there are concerns still about 2,047 children who have not been reunited with their parents. Abolish ice can be a lovely distraction for the president for republicans. The bottom line is, theres no clear plan. Theyre not addressing that issue. How much could that hurt them moving into november . You hit the nail on the head with regard to from a republican standpoint, we would rather be talking about abolishing ice, which is ludicrous, then the tragedy of family separations. Thats a losing issue for republicans. With regard its something that needs to be addressed first and foremost. With regard to the democrat cries to abolish ice, thats absurd. It was created after 9 11. It has a very important function. Looking at the year 2017, they about p apr reduced crime that they are working at doing. If we abolish that agency, which is set there to execute the president s zero tolerance policy, it would lead to open borders. It would lead to mass migration. Thats a losing proposition. Thankfully, the president has said there is zero chance that ice will be abolished because they are doing an effective job at executing zero tolerance. As for americans, a recent Harvard Harris poll that came out says 70 of americans do want Stricter Border enforcement. Theres a call for making sure our borders are strictly enforced. We can all agree, we need to address the family separation issue first and foremost. Go ahead. I just would like to note, i think its important that our borders are secure. I think democrats on down the line would say that. To say that ice is doing its job flawlessly i think is erroneous. Theres being stationed in tennessee, ice rounded up, did a raid and they rounded up 100 individuals who were not undocumented. Some of these folks, their only crime was being a brown person in america. When people are calling to abolish ice, i think these are the instances folks are talking about. To family separation, we have to keep the pressure up on the Trump Administration and dhs. They do not know where some of the children are. Theres no process to reunite these kids. This is at the hands on the Republican Party and their president donald trump. We know one of the big motivators heading into november is President Trumps Supreme Court pick. The chances of that person being confirmed prior to the election, pretty strong. Were going to have somebody in place. This is a major motivator for republicans. As were looking at the choices that the president has out there, is there a chance he is going too far to the right . Is there something wrong with a pick who is perhaps a little bit more in the mold of a Justice Kennedy or even someone who is more neutral . I expect him to do exactly what he campaigned on. This is the one and only shou should he . He put one in. Would he be better served to try to attract more americans by trying to go a little bit more moderate . If that was his goal was to broaden his base and attract more americans, absolutely, you are 100 right. We have seen based on the last year and a half, his goal is to reinforce the base that he currently has. I expect him this is the number one issue for me was Supreme Court justices. He has made it clear he will stick with one of the nominees suggested on the list that he has. These people have been approved by prolife groups, by the Federalist Society. These people will be strong on the issue of life and on the conservative issues that his base elected him to do. It would be nice if he were to select one of the women on there. Amy barrett is a good nominee. I expect to go along the lines of hardiman. I expect him to double down on the Supreme Court nominees being more conservative than moderate. I want to let simone jump in here. We knew who the president was going to go with. We have that list. Senator collins over the weekend saying, she wants someone who will respect the law thats out there, the decisions that have been made. President trump says thats the way he feels when it comes to samesex marriage. Do you think that will get her far, senator collins . Do you think there will be a justice would fits that mold for her . Not on this list. The list that we have is a list of conservative ideologues. Every person on this list has been vetted by the Federalist Society to say they would be willing to overturn roe versus wade. I think thats why its important women throughout maine, women throughout alaska call senator collins and senator murkowski and note that they do not want them to confirm a Supreme Court justice who would in any way, shape or form overturn roe versus wade. Every single woman, regardless of their political affiliation, should be concerned about what this president is trying to do in terms of our health care and our bodies.
