Of lethal force against those protesters. We will have the very latest on that for you. Meantime, here at home, white house turmoil and turnover. White House CounselKellyanne Conway says she expects that the leaks will lead to personnel changes, ie, firing in the white house, in the west wing as the president takes to twitter and calls the leakers traitors. Also new reporting this morning from our Kaitlan Collins that the white house is struggling to enforce that personal cell phone ban even conducting sweeps to try to clear out those devices. Just ahead, a meeting between the president and Senate Republicans could prove tense on two fronts. Lets begin there. Kaitlan collins joins us at the white house. Whats your new reporting on what theyre trying to do to stop the leaks . Reporter poppy, leaks are a very sensitive subject in this white house right now with the president tweeting just yesterday that the leaks are a massive overexaggeration put out by the fake news to make the administration look as bad as possible he said. With that being said, of course, that the people who are leaking are traitors and cowards and we will find out who they are. Poppy, our new reporting shows finding out who the leakers are is not that easy for this white house and despite going to Great Lengths to do so theyve struggled to tamp down any leaks in the 16 months that theyve been in office. One of those tactics was a personal cell phone ban instituted by the chiefofstaff john kelly back in january. When john kelly outline this had policy in a memo to staffers, he said it wasnt to prevent them from being able to talk to reporters but for a National Security reason but many people who work inside this white house saw it as a way to get them to stop being able to talk to reporters throughout the day. The way they carry this had ban out was they had these lockers in the entry ways into the west wing where staffers store their phones throughout the day. You can often find several staffers huddled around these lockers checking their phones throughout the day and staffers sources inside the white house tell me these lockers are constantly buzzing and chirping because peoples sfoenz are going off. For people who forget to put them in the locker or ignore the ban, there are sweeps carried out in the west wing to check if there are any unauthorized devices that arent government issued anywhere in the west wing, that includes these several men dressed in suits going throughout the west wing having these hand held devices roughly the size of ipads that can pick up if a nonauthorized phone is in the west wing. Theyre very accurate im told by people inside the west wing and can even tell if its a apple iphone or samsung galaxy. Just to show you what Great Lengths theyre going through to find out if there are any unauthorized devices in the west wing. In this memo he said that no one would be people could be prohibited from coming into the west wing if they did have these unauthorized devices, but sources inside the white house said they did not believe anyone would be fired as a result of that, of course, we did have Kellyanne Conway last night saying that she believed there would be personnel changes in light of the recent leaks here in the white house, poppy. The bottom line is, staffers inside the white house talked to reporters, the president himself talks to reporters and thats how reporters can find out whats going on in the white house to tell the american people. Kaitlan collins at the white house with all that reporting. Thank you. Lets go to capitol hill. The president s going to have this lunch meeting with some leading republicans and some leading republicans are pretty confused and upset, upset about the mccain comments and confused about why the president is trying to help prop up this Chinese Tech Company zte. What should we expect . Reporter poppy, its really quite frustrating for a lot of members of congress here. This is day six that this story exists now whether or not the white house will publicly apologize well see something publicly from kelly sadler. A lot of people privately are saying that this is the last thing that they want to talk about but theyve been talking about this publicly. We saw from the leadership Lindsey Graham speaking about it as well as senators cornyn and john thune. Theyve all been saying that the white house either sadler herself or the Administration Needs to publicly apologize for this really awful joke of dying, that that is just distracting them from really what they need to focus on at this point. We heard from senator john kennedy in his colorful way saying, sometimes theres a reason for everything and sometimes that reason is that youre just stupid and so that is one thing thats going to come up here in that closed meeting. The other thing, of course, is that giant Chinese Telecommunications corporation and the break that the president says hes going to give zte. They want to know more about that. Cornyn also saying that this is a company that is guilty of cyber theft and espionage, that they are not on the same page with the president. The president for his part, hes very frustrated about the slow pace of judicial nominees getting through. He wants to see that pushed forward in a faster pace and also is going to be pushing for more funding for his border wall. Theres a lot there. Thank you very much. With me now to break it all down our political analysts alex byrne. Alex, let me start with you, your colleague, but she tweets this, sometimes the person yelling the most about leaks is doing the leaking. Its not hard to figure out who shes talking about. Good point . Im not going to decode that specific tweet but the issue of dealing with the trump team in the white house but then going back to the campaign and frankly before he was a political candidate hes trying to root out the people who are talking to the press, hes going to need to get rid of most of the people around him. This is a team this is a situation where theres one mole in the west wing or a couple people who are stepping out of line. It is cultural and the cultural in many ways comes from the top that people who work for trump look out for themselves and they push their agenda in the media. In some ways, yeah the president makes a lot of noise in an outraged way but he rewards people for making their case through the press. He takes his cues from television. And watches it and consumes it. This is day six of the controversy over white house aide kelly sadlers disgusting remarks about john mccain dieing. The white house could have dealt with this differently. They chose not to apologize publicly. How would you assess the white houses job thus far on getting ahead, getting a hold of a story that has been crippling among leading republicans in congress . Look another selfinflicted wound. Weve been here before. This didnt even come from the mouth of the president. The cleanup would be swift and it would have been a one day story, come out and say she was joking, she apologized. We dont condone this type of language even if it was a joke and it wont happen again and thats that. Weve seen this time and time before. Weve seen this with rob porter and a number of instances where the administration starting one would assume from the president because he chose to finally address this issue not on the comments that she made but on the leaking now that they want to focus on. They dig in their heels. Can he do that, alex, at lunch today . If he has senators and cornyn and thune pressing him on zte and other senators pressing him on the mccain comment. Can he really just say, no, no, nothing there, nothing there, this is just a problem of leakers . He certainly can say that and its up to republican senators to press him on it. The president has moved on from many of these controversies simply by refusing to address it. Denying that it happened in some cases mccain, if you agree with his politics, theres a special place in the hearts of so Many Americans and so many of his fellow republicans and democrats in the senate, isnt this different . Theres no question that its different. What i wonder and well see in a couple hours is who is the member of the republican conference who is going to take it to the president and his face. Weve not seen anybody do that at this point. To be crude, you think maybe youll hear from the president if you start to see his base turning on this. Right now you dont seem to see that impacting him at all. His base is not reacting and this is a president that seems to be more focused on his base than expanding to other voters. Alex, quickly on your reporting in the the New York Times today, that trump aides are worried that mike pence seems to be staging a power grab for the Republican Party . There were so many striking examples and stories throughout of how that is happening. What kind of tension, how much tension is this actually causing in the west wing . Where we see right now is amid all the chaos on the trump side of the west wing, the Vice President and some of his senior staffers have annexed just a huge amount of influence when it comes to the levers of power in the Republican Party, fundraising, candidate endorsement, how the party deploys its resources and strategy in the midterms and this is alarming to folks on the trump side of the west wing. Both because they think the president sort of deserves his own power base and they think that everybody beneath the president ought to stay within that power base. Theres some pretty vivid example whens it comes to important elections in states like florida and texas with the Vice President rewarding his own allies and potentially heading off his own political competitors for 2024 or sooner. Very disciplined too. Its a fascinating read. I would suggest it. Thank you both very much. We appreciate it we have to get to breaking news right now. Stunning pictures out of gaza. Clashes happening for a second day in a row after 60 palestinians were killed on the border here between gaza and israel. Take a look at these live images, i believe. Lets go to ian lee, what are we seeing here on day two . Reporter were starting to see more and more people come here. Ill step aside so you can actually see what weve been watching today. Down there you can see that thick black smoke, that is from burning tires used to obscure the site of israeli sniebers and you can see there are possibly a couple hundred protesters down there. They have been moving forward and back from that position towards that fence. At times weve also seen drones coming over head dropping tear gas on the protesters, trying to disburse them, but also were hearing automatic gunfire from these camps trying to shoot down those drones. It is a very tense situation and its growing even more so as more people continue to come and we were expected this, we were told that more people would come later in the day after the funerals that took place today. There you go. Here, you can see the tear gas falling down, this is from the drone and this is really what weve been watching all day, this back and forth with protesters. Weve heard the crack of life bullets. Weve seen ambulances rushing in ferrying people away. That just gives you a sense of the atmosphere. You can see why especially yesterday how there were 60 People Killed in one of the deadliest days, the deadliest day since the 2014 war and it looks like its just picking up, again, today. Ian lee for us there. Youre looking at these pictures that are just coming in out of gaza. Stay close and safe. Well get back to you with more. World leaders from french president Emmanuel Macron to the United Nations condemning the use of lethal force by the israeli military. The white house justifying what has been happening in the wake of the u. S. Embassy opening there and jerusalem blaming hamas solely for the violence. A reporter ian lee is on the ground there. Well get to him as soon as we can. Were keeping a very close eye on these pictures. Meantime, the president s pledge to save chinese jobs could make for a very tense lunch meeting with republicans in the senate. Today hes headed to the hill to meet with them. Theyve been confuse today say the least why the president is now trying to save a company that u. S. Sanctions pretty much killed. Lets go to our Christine Romans with more. Youve got senators cornyn and thune scratching their heads. Why, mr. President , are you trying to save this big Chinese Tech Firm zte and the president responding with a tweet trying to clean it up. Its remarkable. Its reversible and a reversal. First President Trump said he wanted to save chinese jobs, now the president says he doesnt want to hurt u. S. Suppliers to the smartphone maker zte. Just last month trumps Congress Department crippled zte by banning it from buying u. S. Parts for seven years. Punishment for banning u. S. Products. The wilbur ross called it egregious behavior. Yesterday he said the u. S. Is reconsidering its response. The question is are there alternative remedies to the one we had originally put forward and thats the area we will be exploring very, very promptly. In return sources say the u. S. Wants concessions from china, like removing tariffs on agriculture products, linking ztes fate to broader trade tax. Not that enforcement action but as part of the trade negotiations. A chinese delegation heads to washington today. Then there are the National Security concerns. Just two weeks ago the pentagon banned zte phones from being sold on military bases. U. S. Its interesting you even see some of the most ardent supporters in the media of the president like Laura Ingraham scratching their head and tweeting, whats this all about . He has a lot of questions to answer this afternoon. Is it about farmers, technology, north korea, is it Something Else . Thank you. This story will continue. Lets go back to those live pictures out of gaza right on the border there with israel. These are moments ago, the clashes between Israeli Defense forces and palestinians. Funerals held for the 60 palestinians that died yesterday. Lets go to ian lee on the ground in gaza. What are you seeing . Reporter poppy, were seeing more people coming to this camp here in the northern part of gaza. Let me step aside and just show you what weve been watching this past few hours. You have that thick black smoke. Thats from burning tires. Theyre using that smoke to obscure the site of israeli snipers. Weve also seen drones flying overhead firing tear gas down on the crowds to disburse them and once in a while well also get the crack of live rounds. Those hitting people weve seen the ambulances probably, you can see them too down there with their flashing lights. Theyve been going out grabbing the people who have been shot and ferrying them away to the hospital. You can just see right there and that scene, that is what weve been seeing all along the border yesterday and today in different places. Were at just one of multiple camps here along the gaza border. You can just see how this has become such a deadly situation with yesterday being the greatest death toll in a single day since the 2014 war. It also included an 8monthold infant child, this girl, layla, she was killed by gas exfixation at one of these camps and the protesters, when you talk to them, they say theyre frustrated. Theyre frustrated with the political situation here in gaza which has been under a blockade by israel and egypt for over a decade. Theyre also angry about that u. S. Embassy move, about the u. S. Declaring jerusalem the capital of israel. When we heard from hamas the yesterday, the blood is on the american hands. Poppy, we dont know what that means. Well have to wait and see. The white house saying the exact opposite. The message from the white house is, according to raj shah that hamas should bear responsibility for the entire situation. Lives hang in the balance as you mentioned. An 8monthold little girl killed in these clashes. Thank you very much, ian. Stay safe to you and your entire team. With me now gayle la moan. Thank you for being here. It is tragic to see these deaths. Doctors without borders calls this unacceptable, inhumane. You have the french president calling out israels use of lethal force against these protesters. We have the white house saying, this is hamas, this is all on hamass shoulders. Where do we go from here . The tale of two split screens and it has been for a long time where you have real desperation. Ians talking about frustration. You have 60 unemployment among young people in gaza. You have this huge frustration and on the other hot side you have an israel that has never opinion stronger in terms of the way the world has seen it. It has the United States withdrawing from the iran deal. The embassy is moved and, in fact, many of the gulf states have actually been warming to the israeli position much more than theyve ever been able to before because they have been fighting iran. That has been much more important to many of the gulf powers than what has been happening on the streets as these lives hang in the balance. The Legal Adviser to Palestinian Leader was just on new day this morning and when she was asked where to we go from here, are negotiations even possible at this point, heres what she said. I dont think that negotiations are going to resume and i actually dont think theyre going to be the answer. I was somebody who was part of those negotiations for 25 years and over the course of 25 years, all that we saw was the number of settlement expand to be clear she is not a supporter of a twostate solution. I see a onestate solution. Is she right at this point, gayle, saying i dont see a place for negotiations restart right now . I dont think anybody sees a real possibility for imminent hope right now or reason to be hopeful, but that said, we have been in unexpected places before and i think you should never give up. The question is, who is going to lead that discussion and from what position of power. Iran has been the focus for so many of the regional powers, wheres the energy . Wheres the commitment to get back to peace . The palestinians say the u. S. , because it moved the embassy to jerusalem, essentially as some analysts say putting its thumb on the scale as a neutral arbiter. We did hear from Jared Kushner thats getting a lot of attention. He blamed the deadly violence on hamas as the white house later did calling hamas part of the problem, not part of the solution but then he also used the words that peace is within reach. Youre saying one party is not part of the solution but peace is within reach. It seems contradictory. The middle east and the Israeli PalestinianPeace Process has long been filled with contradictions. The question is, will there be a leader . Could this be an emerjs of people who are ready to say here are the things in play now and here the possibilities . Is it possible that iran being the focus of so many in the region can lead to new alliances, can lead to new guarantees for the palestinians who are seeking some level of security . It doesnt look likely, but you do think that weve seen many less likely things, look at north korea at the moment, still be possible. So im never one who says its impossible, you do see real lives hanging in the balance in the meantime. Very briefly, how significant that turkey recalled its ambassador to the United States to the middle of all of this . Its fascinating. Turkey promised it was going to do this and it comes amid long simmering tensions between the United States and its nato ally turkey about the u. S. Forces its backing in syria. A day after first lady Melania Trump went under a procedure for a benign kidney condition the president says shes recovering well. He also says she will leave the hospital in two to three days. Kate bennett who follows the first lady very closely joins me now. What are you learning . Reporter the president is probably the most news weve gotten this morning. Certainly we have not received another statement from the first ladys office or the east wing or her Communications Director so were relying on the president s tweet. Yesterday the statement about her procedure indicated she could be at walter reed for the duration of the week which felt like a long time for medical experts considering the procedure that she had for this kidney, benign kidney condition as it was explained. Last night she was resting comfortably. My sources said the procedure was successful during the president s visit to her yesterday afternoon. He spent about an hour with her at her side. He also visited with her medical team and the nurses and thanked them personally and i think she wanted to get some rest and thats when he left. Certainly he called her the he wasnt there for the procedure in person. He was at the white house and i believe that was her choosing. She is private. She did not want the hubbub of extra motorcade and secret service and the press pool. They wanted to pull this off without anyone knowing and respect that privacy. No one knew until the release went out that she was clear and out of the surgery and resting comfortably. They did that no one knew about that outside of the white house before hand . We heard the Vice President say last night that this was a long planned procedure that shes doing well, i think it speaks to the very different sides of the building in the white house and were hearing now in the headlines about all these leaks and what the white house is doing to stop them on the west wing side, meanwhile the east wing side which i cover pretty closely is pretty tight. Shes got the first lady has ten staffers. Theyre incredibly loyal. Its very difficult to pry information out of them and yesterday was a good example of that. We wish her well. Hope for a speedy recovery. Thank you for the reporting. Dr. Muhammad with me and cnn contributor and author of first woman. Nice to have you both here. Really glad to hear the first lady is recovering well. Doctor, what is significant about a procedure like this and how serious is it . Embolization say procedure, its a serious but not surgery. An i. V. Is placed in the upper leg and a catheter is threaded into the kidney and steered to the proper blood vessel to block blood supply to an abnormality in the kidney. Thats either benign growth of the kidney or a vascular problem, a problem in the blood vessel. Both predispose today bleeding and given the elective nature of this we just learned would be preventive rather than treating an acute problem. Given that is this time line for her staying in the hospital two or three more days according to the president this morning, is that typical . I would say its somewhat atypical but not out of the question. My its hard to tell without any more details. It may be just out of an abundance of caution and privacy. Certainly, staying a little longer may imply that this is a little bit more of a complex situation. The larger the growth in the kidney, the more side effects that can happen from the procedure which would imply additional monitoring. Sometimes a second stage of the procedure is performed because the growth, for example, may have multiple blood vessels and so they may just want to evaluate for clinical success. Clearly they said it was technically successful so they blocked the blood vessels that they wanted. The question is did they achieve the desired result in terms of shrinking whatever abnormality it is. Lets certainly hope so. Kate, to you, its been a while since a sitting first lady had a medical procedure in the hospital. You have nancy reagan and Roselyn Carter and betty ford. You noted something very interesting and powerful, sometimes when first ladies choose to speak about this publicly it can have a huge impact such as betty ford. When she had her mastectomy in 1974 it was a big deal because at the time people didnt talk about Breast Cancer publicly and she was one of the first people along with Shirley Temple black to talk about it and she insisted. I interviewed fords press secretary and she insisted on the press release saying exactly what the procedure was and not just a Womans Health issue which was common at the time to say. That was a big Ground Breaking moment. Theres some wonderful letters between betty ford and women who were going through similar treatment where she said, you know, have the procedure and move on with your life. It was very powerful at the time and also to the point of president s coming for the procedure, even when betty ford had her mastectomy, president ford came after the procedure you didnt want to cause this big hubbub with a president every time the president moves as you know it causes a traffic and publicity. Completely understandable. Melania trump is a very private person. You just heard our kate bennett outline the difference between the west wing and the east wing. Do you expect that someone who covers first ladys so closely that she will speak about this in the aftermath, that she will talk about preventive procedures like this . Its interesting that it was preventive since they have a 12yearold son. You can certainly understand why shed want to do Something Like this. I was surprised that they were being so forth coming yesterday with this announcement. Nancy reagan there was no briefing, no prognosis given of how she was doing afterwards. Its really private and she is such a private person. I would be surprised if she came out and did something really public about this. Yeah. Kate anderson brouwer, thank you, both for the expertise. You were, i assume, passed out . Yeah. He woke me up. He had to. He was already penetrating me and then i remember him performing oral sex and after that i dont really remember. Were you able to fight back, tell him no . I was too enubriated. Like many of these cases in which the victim was intoxicated the charges against the uber zriefr were dropped. Uber tried to keep her out of the courts and out of the public for trying to force arbitration and a nondisclosure agreement. Uber is abandoning that strategy. Uber chief legal officer tony west just announce this had blog post that the company is overhauling the way they handle these cases. No longer requiring riders to arbitrate claims of Sexual Harassment or assault. Uber will no longer force victims of Sexual Harassment or assault to sign these nondisclosure forms. Uber says it will not silence victims. They can speak out. Finally, uber says its going to commit to published a safety transparency report thats going to include data on Sexual Assaults and other incidents. Thats one thing we sought from uber in our reporting and were refused. The company says its going to release that data on reported Sexual Assaults. All of the changes coming after youre reporting and id like to point out after months of asking uber about this and exposing the vulnerability of women riding alone in the backseat such important reporting because it affects change like this that makes such a difference for so many of these victims. I know uber, as you said, would not sit down with you despite the repeated requests, canceled an interview at the last minute. The question comes at the beginning of this, how did this even happen . One would think there would be extensive background checks on the drivers, fingerprinting, Everything Possible before people are getting into these cars. Thats because uber led people to believe this is your safe ride home. Actually marketed this to millennials going out on the town, having drinks, dont get a dui, take an uber home. Well, it turns out as we have been continuing and will continue to report, the background system the background check system that uber set up is private. It doesnt go through a government entity. It doesnt allow for fingerprinting. And there are a lot of these drivers who slip through the cracks. Now, background checks dont solve everything, but they are a part of what makes it safe to drive in a strangers car, which is effectively what youre doing. Uber, according to many state regulators, not doing enough, well stay on it. Drew, thank you for what you and your entire team did on this, it makes a difference. Appreciate the reporting.
