Expected. The uk has kicked out 23 Russian Diplomats. Now the u. S. Announces this morning its kicking out 60 of them. These are russians that work in consulates and embassies, 12 of them as you mentioned will come from new york, the other 48 from seattle. The u. S. Is now closing its consulate in seattle because its located too close to a u. S. Submarine base. The u. S. Isnt calling these diplomatic staff, theyre calling them intelligence agents. They called them aggressive gatherers of intelligence. This will significantly diminish the ability of russia to spy on the u. S. Weve seen this tit for tat of expulsions over the summer, the u. S. Kicked out some russian responded, the u. S. Responded again. After the last round, both the u. S. And russia reached this parity to each have about 450 diplomats from each others countries in each other country. So this is going to diminish that significantly taking away 60 from 455 and the Trump Administration this morning was asked by reporters, you know, russia is likely to respond to this, what do you think of that . How will that effect the u. S. s diplomatic stance in russia . Are there plans to remove u. S. Diplomats voluntarily . They said no and they wouldnt speculate on what russias response would be but they did say they would hold the ability to respond further and punish russia again if russia retaliates. So this is a significant step and we see it going farther than even the uk has. The administration also said that other u. S. Allies are going to do the same. We dont know exact numbers. More than a dozen u. S. Allies are going to take similar steps possibly as soon as today, john. All right. Thank you. Even before this action was taken, the russians warned they respond. The kremlin spokesperson said they would follow the principle of res posty. Thats language of well kick as many out as you do. Weve seen that approximately when 23 british diplomats were kicked out after the same thing happened in london but over the last few days weve heard from denmark, the czech republic, other media reports perhaps suggesting that poland or germany might be involved also willing to take action possibly in the hours ahead. We are expecting a statement from the president of the European Council which may well outline what level of keernded diplomatic response we see p. Two more than things to remember here, firstly this is much more solidarity and much more cohesion across europe against moscow. Many had expected theresa may could actually muster after the poisoning of the former russian spy and his daughter, she wasnt she does appear to have kept at it and managed to get a lot of people on her side. Secondly, less diplomats in both countries means less understanding and thats not a good thing when youre dealing with a complicated country like russia. Back to you. Nick patton walsh covering that for us joining me now is samantha former Senior Adviser under president obama. Sam, we just got two new bits of information. Weve been in background briefings all morning who want the world to know that this was absolutely President Trumps decision. He made this decision himself after consultation with his advisers over the weekend. They also say the president has not spoken directly to president putin about this. President trump congratulated him on his reelection. So sam, lets talk about what this is before we talk about what its not. What message does this sound expelling 60 Russian Diplomats in sol dared with other nations. It sends a message that the United States is perhaps ready to stand with other countries against russian aggression. Doing this in a acorned way makes it more powerful. Were in close contact with all the europeans taking similar action and sends a message that russia is not a topic that is no longer allowed in the situation room and President Trump is willing to talk about measures. John bolton has said expelling diplomats doesnt do anything. We have data points here. Weve expelled diplomats before. This is a larger number. It hasnt done anything. Weve expelled diplomats and utin has not stopped his maligned behavior. Hes increased it. We expel diplomats in response to election meddling for example. We have the intelligence chief saying that the election meddling is still ongoing, so, yes, this is a positive step. We need to be clear about the fact that russia is not going to stop what its doing. Thank you very much. Well watch very closely to see how the russians do respond in the next minutes and hours. The other major news just another monday morning after an adult film actress said she spanked the man that would become president. Theres no dispute that Stormy Daniels was paid hush money to keep the alleged relationship secret. That fact is agreed to by all sides which is stunning in and of itself. In this interview with Anderson Cooper, for the first time, Stormy Daniels alleges that she was physically threatened to stay silent. I was in a parking lot going to a fitness class with my infant daughter. Taking the seats facing backwards in the backseat, diaper bag, you know, getting all the stuff out and a guy walked up on me and said to me, leave trump alone, forget the story and he leaned around and looked at my daughter and said, a beautiful little girl, it would be a shame of something happened to her mom and then he was gone. Our sara sidner covering this for us. Sarah, an impressive piece last night. Interesting interview from anderson to say the least. Very interesting and what you just showed is something none of us had known the details of. Her attorney had come out and said there was a threat made, at least one, maybe more, she detailed what that threat was all about. Michael cohen had responded saying he had nothing to do with it and he doesnt even believe that that threat actually happened asking for a retraction which her Attorney Says they will not be giving. Here are some other details that we hadnt heard directly coming from her mouth. Anderson asked her about whether or not she signed an agreement that was essentially a hush agreement, taking 130,000 from Michael Cohen who says he paid her without the president s knowledge to keep her quiet. Was it hush money to say silent . Yes. The story was coming out again. I was concerned for my family and their safety. I think some people watching this are going to doubt that you entered into this negotiation because you feared for your safety, theyll think that you saw an opportunity. I think the fact that i didnt even negotiate, i just quickly said yes to this very, you know, strict contract and what most people will agree with me extremely low number is all the proof i need. So you signed and released a statement that said im not denying this affair because i was paid in hush money. Im denying it because it never happened. Thats a lie. Yes. If it was untruthful, why did you sign it . Because they made it sound like i had no choice. No one was putting a gun to your head. No physical violence, no. You thought there would be legal repercussion if you didnt sign it. Yes. The exact sentence used was, they can make your life hell in many different wells. They being im not exactly sure who they were. I believe it to be Michael Cohen. So we have heard from her former managers attorney and her former attorney who said he would like to talk about this, saying that he denies that he ever pressured her but he is under attorneyclient privilege at this point and cant unless she allows him to do so, john . She talks in detail about their First Encounter and talks about the sex which she says was consensual even though she also says she didnt really want to do it. Yeah. This was really interesting. Culturally this will be something thats talked about among women and men, bg these relationships and how there are times that some women will say, i didnt really want to do it but i did it because i felt like i made the mistake of going to the hotel room. Ill let you hear her words. Melania trump had given birth to a son, did he mention his wife or child at all in this . I asked and he brushed it aside, said oh, yeah, yeah. Dont worry about that. We have separate rooms and stuff. And you had sex with him. Yes. You were 27, he was 60. Were you physically attracted to him . No. Not at all . No. Did you want to have sex with him . No but i didnt say no. Im not a victim. Im not it was entirely consensual . Oh, yes. Yes. You work in an industry where condom use is an issue. Did he use a condom . No. Now youll remember that the same information came from Karen Mcdougal who also detailed the fact that she had sex with the president and that he did not the use protection and these patterns were seeing over and over again, quite a few details that are very much the same between what Stormy Daniels has said about her relationship with donald trump and what Karen Mcdougal who was also suing to tell her story has said about her relationship with donald trump. I do want to get into, though, before all this happened, there were certainly flirting going on and heres how Stephanie Clifford, aka Stormy Daniels described what happened when she went up to the hotel room. He was like, have you seen my new magazine . He was showing you his own picture on the cover up yeah. Does this normally work for you . And he looked very taken back, like he didnt really understand what i was saying. Does talking about yourself normally work. Someone should take that magazine and spank you with it . Give me that. And i told him, you wouldnt . Hand it over. And so he did and i was like, turn around. Drop them. You told donald trump to take off his pants . Yes. And did he . Yes. Now its important to note here when youre watching this, a lot of folks saying, she seems credible but what she says on camera and what shes talking about has to be backed up by evidence when it comes to any potential legal issue with him or the federal Elections Commission on Campaign Finance laws, that will all have to be proven in court if a case goes forward and that will require hard evidence, john . All right. Thank you very much. There was a lot in that interview but now, her lawyer says there is much, much more. We have a lot of evidence in this case. Plus, one of the president s friends says brace for new changes in the administration. Could a cabinet secretary be in jeopardy . And these kids not done marching just yet. Theyre going 50 miles more right to the hometown of House Speaker paul ryan. Stay with us. A soft its softer than ever. Charmin ultra soft is softer than ever so its harder to resist. The breaking news just moments ago, the white house announced that the United States is expelling 60 Russian Diplomats from the United States. Most will come from the Russian Embassy here but also from the United Nations as well. This is in response to the poisoning of a former russian double agent in the United Kingdom and several other nato allies are taking similar actions as well. Our Kaitlan Collins live at the white house and you have some information about how this decision was made. Reporter thats right. We were just briefed by Senior Administration officials during a call about the details of how this decision was made and its a really interesting context if you look at it because though they said today that the president was personally involved in this decision that he was the one who made the final decision to expel these 60 Russian Diplomats and he was involved in the negotiations with it over the weekend, we have to point out the president just spoke to russian president Vladimir Putin last tuesday. That call was in the headline a lot last week because he was directed by his National Security advisers to not congratulate putin on his recent election victory but also another thing that slipped under the radar was that he was also directed to raise the poisoning of this former russian spy with putin during the call and russians role in the poisoning of that and he did not do that. Of course, now, we do not believe he even looked at those briefing materials but its important to note that the president when he spoke with the russian president didnt even bring this up even though the white house has maintaining that he was very involved in this decision and actually the president sounded down right beat when he described that call with putin, saying it was a good call and they were looking forward to meeting sometime soon. You have to take that in mind and as the white house briefed reporters today they said the president has not spoken with putin since that call last tuesday when he did not raise the poisoning of this former russian spy. It makes you question just how involved the president actually was behind the scenes in this decision because if its something that means so much to him why didnt he bring it up with that call to him . Good questions. We will probe those areas as best we can over the course of the next several hours. One other thing emerging from the white house this morning, perhaps the notion that the president is not done yet in terms of shaking up his white house staff and his cabinet. What have you learned on that front . Reporter thats right. We are expecting the president to get rid of David Shulkin this week. We know this has been a decision that has been a long time coming. Hes been on the chopping block for some time. Our sources are indicating that it could come as early as this week based on what the president has been saying. Hes said multiple times there could be one or more shakeups in his cabinet coming soon. We have already seen several shakeups in the white house so far with the secretary of state, h. R. Mcmaster being replaced. Shulkin actually used to be a favorite of the president back during the early days of the administration but he has since fallen out of his good graces. You have to take this with the Deputy Press Secretary hogan giddily saying a few hours ago that the president actually still has confidence in shulkin. We should take that with a grain of salt. One week before mcmaster was replaced, the president had confidence in him and there would be no changes at the National Security council. Of course that later proved to not be true so that we are on shulkin watch at the white house. It does not seem the president is done shaking up the west wing just yet. Keep an eye on it for us. Let us know when something happens as no doubt it soon will. Joining me now laura coates and alice burns from the the New York Times and amy parnz from the hill. Amy, i want to start with you on what this is. The president is taking action against russia. Right. He apparently was in meetings on this. The white house wants us to know he was very involved, very important for them to tell us, how involved he was in this decision to kick out these 60 russian dip low meats. Its a very trump move actually. He says one thing and does another. This comes on the heel of that call where he congratulated putin. I think he has to kind of show hes gotten so much scrutiny. The press is asking him about russia as this cloud looms over the white house so he has to show that, you know, he is taking action and he is taking this seriously. It remains to be seen how much hell continue to talk about this publicly and what that relationship will look like in the days. We are learning other nations are taking part in this. I just seen germany and poland among others that will be kicking out Russian Diplomats as well. The president spoke, had a conversation with Vladimir Putin one week ago where this certainly could have come up. It is the type of thing you do raise with another leader if youre displeased with the actions that his country is taking. You would think so and this is part of i think a basically buy polar approach to russia that weve seen from this administration, that you look at what the state department does and the Defense Department does, what our ambassadors in dealing with entities like nato are doing and you listen to what the president says and you get very different message depending on what youre listening to. A lot of it boils down to what you care about more. Do you care about what the officials bureaucratic actions that the administration is taking or do you care about the way the president uses the mega phone and the moral authority of his office. We clearly have not seen President Trump use his platform and the global moral authority of the presidency to take on russia and over the next couple days, its very important to see is he comfortable talking about what his administration did today. He may not. We almost never hear him talking about russia outloud even when the administration is taking action. Ammie, its interesting. We did hear given arms to ukraine, for instance. The missiles. They took military action in syria in a way that the Obama Administration didnt. They point to these examples as areas of action even when they dont have as many concrete responses on the russian meddling. Exactly p. Theyre defining a line and drawing a red line and saying these are very serious things and were very involved in this and the president s taking it very seriously and hes not he still is in denial about what has happened or doesnt want to talk about it publicly at least about whats happened with the election. Laura, i saved you because this is a wide umbrella here of issues that the white house is dealing with. Russia is the headline and the russia investigation and meddling investigation that Robert Mueller is leading and theres been this unusual shakeup in the president s legal team. John dowd who was handling the personal reaction is out p. Two lawyers that the president wanted to keep in. This is a lot of turmoil off thely late in the game pointing to disarray. Especially when you had negotiations up to this point where john dowd was the lead front person on that between mueller and his team. Its almost as if you had a captain no longer apart of the ship in the mueller storm. Youre on sea and trying to figure it out and the president has been very clear about the fact that other people do want to join the team. One of those conflicts is that one of the people that digenova was representing is the person who has concerns about whether hope hicks when she tried to make a statement about these emails never going to get out. Were talking about a web thats tangling here. This is based primarily on intelligence reports that russia is responsible. So the president on the one hand is discrediting the fbi and the Intelligence Community here as it relates to the Mueller Investigation on the other hand taking it completely literally and saying, well punish base on that. Why the disconnect will raise the concern again . It goes under that same umbrella. Will the rhetoric match the action here . They often dont. Well wait and see. Stick around. We have a lot more to talk about coming up. Stormy daniels says she was threatened physically over the story that she wanted to tell about donald trump. Her legal team is now vowing that they have more information that they havent revealed yet. With tough food, your dentures may slip and fall. All signs point to a big opening this morning. The question is, whats going on here . Weve had pretty down days. Our chief Business Correspondent christine romans, what are we seeing . Youll see a bounce of 300 or more points. And one big reason is because last week was so terrible for the markets, big concern about a trade war between the u. S. And china. Last week was the worst week in a couple of years for stocks. The Dow Jones Industrial average 3,000 points down from its record high and officially in correction territory and over the weekend, you get the story in the the wall street journal that says the United States and china are already negotiating quietly for how to avoid a trade war and the treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin on fox news last night saying theyre going to try to avoid a trade war. Listen. So as President Trump said, were not afraid of a trade war but thats not our objective. Were working on a pathway to see if we can reach an agreement as to what fair trade is for them to open up their markets, reduce their tariffs, stop forced technology transfer. These are all the things we want to do. And so theres a tone here today of a little more optimism. This is more a trade dispute than a trade war at this point and last week selling, john, was way overdone. Fridays loss is all about erased by monday mornings early gains. We will keep our eye on this throughout the day. Thanks very much. Youre welcome. Maybe the Market Reaction to 60 minutes as well overnight. The lawyer for Stormy Daniels vowing to get to the bottom of this alleged threat against his client that took place back in 2011. Well get to the bottom of it because well find out who that was and who hired them. Im fairly clear as to who hired them. And that is . Again, i think its fairly obvious. Its got to come from someone associated with the Trump Organization. My panel is back with me now and guys, just to recap, adult film actress alleged she spanked the person that would become president. Compared this actress to his daughter. She says she was physically threatened and ultimately paid to stay silent and there are people asking this morning whether there was really anything there in that interview. But this isnt its awfully interesting to sit here today and analyze this. Amie, you say the biggest new area is this notion of fear. Right, because this is coming from the president of the United States. He wasnt the president at the time, but this is this is concerning to a lot of people. Notice that President Trump has stayed very quiet about this. We havent heard we never heard from him last night. We havent heard from him about the Stormy Daniels affair in the days before that and so i think theres something there where theres smoke theres fire as they say and i think theres more coming and i think thats what people are looking for. Her lawyer threatening there is more coming, held that notion out there. Laura coates, during the 60 minutes piece they talked about the possible Campaign Finance violation and that is where, really, the president s lawyer Michael Cohen could be in some legal jeopardy here. Trevor potter who used to run the election committee, he was all over this piece last night. He thinks this is a stronger case potentially. I do agree. Youre talking about 11 days before the general election is when this contract went down, when the payment was made. Talking about john edwards who it was before he even sealed the dnc nomination which he never did obviously and it was about a year or more before hand. That distance from it makes it a harder uphill battle. The issue there was that they didnt find it to be a Campaign Contribution because a lot of people different people were trying to protect hunter and her pregnancy. The person said at the time that it wasnt a Campaign Contribution, it was don mcgahn we know where he now is in terms of the white house. Its the media of the turn around of the general election. Certain things didnt add up for me and the statement that she made in terms of intimidation and fear is a very big concern happened back in 11 in a parking lot by someone she assumed may be come from the Trump Organization but the proof is in the pudding and the question still looms at this point whether stormy can talk about any of this. Is she offered no proof that this threat actually happened, she says it happened. We dont know if the lawyer has any proof. He now says theyre looking in to it. Alex, you can see this raising a new round of uncomfortable questions, both legally and politically and personally for this white house that you imagine will come up when the press secretary briefs, when the president faces questions . Absolutely. Were talking i think understandably and appropriately about the most serious legal allegations that Stormy Daniels made in that interview but she said a number of things about the president s personal behavior with her, claims about the nature of the president s marriage, that were really lurid and uncomfortable for the president and first lady. We can see this story unfolding on a number of different fronts in a number of different directions, the more she talks, the more her lawyer talks, the more other women talk. It puts the president s personal life under a microscope in a way that frankly hes not had to endure since taking office. I do think on the subject of the threats, its worth noting that there is a very well established track record of folks very close to the president before he was president and since hes become president speaking in very menacing ways to people they see as obstacles or unfriendly to them, not necessarily in the kind of almost explicitly physical threatening language that daniels claimed but pretty darn close. This is not well see if she can establish further evidence of this episode but its not a farfetched suggestion that somebody close to trump might Say Something like that. You can ask the press secretary, did the president have any knowledge of anyone threatening Stormy Daniels, did the Trump Organization has the president offered someone to speak in that language to anybody at all. You said there was some uncomfortable moments for the president and first lady. There was some uncomfortable moments for humans that walked the earth. When the president when Stephanie Clifford was talking about the language that the president used brought up his daughter ivanka which is something he did with mcdougal. Hes, like, wow, you you are special. You remind me of my daughter. , you know, hes very proud of yvonneca as he should be. Shes a brilliant woman, shes beautiful. Shes, you know thats his daughter and he should be proud of her. He said i was beautiful like her and, you know, youre a smart girl and there wasnt a lot of comparing but there was some, yeah. I heard a lot about her. This is something that people are talking about today. This is watercooler talk. This is something that doesnt take a flow chart to connect with. Right and thats the thing. She was believable. For the second time in a week were watching another woman talk about a relationship with donald trump and, you know, its been a little weird. There were talks about her spanking him and other moments and so i think thats, you know these are things this puts the president of the United States under an uncomfortable spotlight and i think one that will continue to follow him and one as alex said, this is another person and will hear from more. Even more uncomfortable than being spanked with a magazine that has you on the cover. One of the other pieces that came out was the possible connection to the Mueller Investigation. We know sam nunberg that when he was answering questions from investigators, they asked about possible relationships that the president had, they asked about Michael Cohen. There have been some questions that relate to this we believe asked by the special counsel. Do you see a possible connection . The connection is the overall theme of transparency for democracy. Mueller is charged to figure out if the American People had the wool pulled over their eyes. The Campaign Laws are financed so america is very clear on who was influencing or paying for a particular activity. Its also about general behavior that may be nefarious or menacing. But the overall theme here is the pattern or behavior from the Trump Administration or members of the campaign and argue pli, you know, cohen was apart in some way of that to try to orchestrate a way that there is not transparency for the American People. Another notion to keep in mind and why its so important that mcdougal and daniels said the same thing is neither woman actually saw the other ones interview. The Anderson Cooper interview was recorded before Karen Mcdougal. Neither of them saw it. Its very important. How far does the pattern go here particularly if there are also threats involved. Thank you all very much. I appreciate it and Pay Attention to the president s silence here because that may be the most notable thing going on. For some students the march is not over. New this morning, the march for our lives continues through a group of wisconsin Student Advocates building on the momentum from the antigun violence rallies over the weekend. This groups calls themselves 50 miles more. It is marching 50 mills from wisconsin capitals to jamesville. Its the hometown of House Speaker paul ryan. The coorganizer who joins me now by phone in the midst of this march, katie, thank you so much for being with us. Tell me about 50 miles more, how it started and what your mission is . Yeah. So right after the parkland shooting happened and were heading out and speaking out and saying enough is enough. What can we do . And obviously paul ryan lives here and he has a lot of power so we got together with kids all over wisconsin and said, lets march just a few miles. So saturday, after the march ended we brought a group of kids to madison and yesterday morning, we embarked on the trek, the 50 mile trek from madison to jamesville and tonight we stopped in oregon and weigh rife in janesville on wednesday. Have you heard from the Speakers Office yet and beyond that what message specifically do you want to deliver to him . Yeah. We really would love to have a conversation. I think that is one of our big goals because obviously we want we want to be listened and heard. And so, you know, were asking paul ryan we asked complete ban on all military style weapons and weapons of war. The second is a ban on all accessories that turn semiautomatic weapons into automatic weapons such as bump stocks. Increase background checks, purchasing age, waiting period. We want to have a conversation because we want to sit at the table and start a dialogue. I seen the statement from the Speakers Office saying he welcomes and applauds the activism taking place around the country. I dont think he necessarily agrees with a lot of the points youre raising but he does want to hear from students. Weve heard from former senator Rick Santorum that works here for us at cnn. He was a former republican senator critical in some cases of the message being delivered by the students over this weekend. Im going to play some sound. Ill describe it after we play it for you, katie. Listen. How about kids instead of looking to someone else to solve their problem do something about maybe taking cpr classes or trying to deal with situations that where there is a violent shooter how are they looking to other people . They took action. They took action and asked someone to pass a law. They didnt take action and say how do i as an individual deal with this problem. So the criticism katie from the senator there is he says the students like you who are marching are asking other people to solve the problem pass a law instead of doing something yourselves. He suggested learn cpr. What is your reaction to that . Obviously the message were saying is a team effort. Were not expecting to carry this or adults to carry this. We want to work together. We dont have the power to pass a law. We cant do that. If we could, we certainly would. What we do have the power to do is raise our voices so thats what were doing and so i think, you know, obviously we have different most effective thing that you can do but as the young people, what we feel our greatest power right now is our voice and it is our tool to stand up and speak out and say that weve had enough. Katie eder on the 50 mile more. Stay warm. Its a cold day out in wisconsin. We appreciate you being with us. Sources say about the president is frustrated by all the Stormy Daniels coverage. The big 60 minutes interview between Anderson Cooper and Stormy Daniels. The question, did people watch . We have the answer. Cnn senior media correspondent Brian Stelter is here. How many . The final number wont be in until this afternoon. Normally 60 minutes gets 10, 12 million viewers, this was well over 20 million viewers. According to the overnight numbers that came in, this was the highest rated episode of 60 minutes in a decade. That puts into perspective what a significant moment this was for Stormy Daniels, for Anderson Cooper and 60 minutes and maybe for President Trump. The ratings work this way, the show benefits from the ncaa basketball leadin. Was always going to be a big program, big episode of 60 minutes. Game went into overtime, so the ratings were higher. You have to go back to 2008, to find an episode as highly rated as last night. Thats when barack and Michelle Obama gave the first post election interview. Think about that, president ial interview, with the obamas, and now Stormy Daniels ranks right up there. You can see how this cuts through more than some of the other stories, this is the highest rated 60 minutes since 2008, fascinating. There are people at the time last night saying the basketball is running late, it is going to step all over the 60 minutes , you dont understand how this works. It gave a bigger boost. She wasnt paid for the interview, but is ben knefiting other ways, making public appearances. So the high ratings will put more pressure on the white house, on President Trump and maybe even more importantly on his lawyers. As this case moves forward. We heard from daniels lawyer saying he has more evidence, will share it in the future. Daniels and her lawyer want to keep this in the news and the 60 minutes interview helped with that. People can judge for themselves, watch for themselves and see if she is credible and it will reair tonight. Thank you for being with us. Appreciate it.
