Getting a minutebyminute account from police about how this transpired. According to police, he arrived in an uber at about 2 19 p. M. About two minutes later he was already firing that weapon. Forward about eight minutes so ten minutes into his day on this campus, he set down his ar15 rifle and started blending in with students who were trying to escape. Thats how he was able to leave campus. He stopped by two stores, grabbed a sandwich, grabbed a drink. Then a Police Officer from the Coconut CreekPolice Department saw him, because that Police Officer says he remembered the description that went over his radio. He saw him in a residential area. He says his training kicked in and thats how the suspect was apprehended without incident. Were learning a lot more about him from Police Records that show the police were called to his home 39 times since 2010 for things like domestic disturbance and mentally ill person. Were also learning about a second inthat graham account that shows pictures of him with a mask, menacing photos of an arsenal of weapons and were also see iing a new video being revealed taken by a neighbor who says he appeared to be practicing target practice outside his house. If you look behind me, you will see there are still flashing lights, anderson. This is still a very active scene. Investigators here still sifting through the evidence. As you know, this work is extremely important because as family members ask for justice to be served, its this work going on behind us that will make sure that that happens. Anderson . Still a lot to learn. Rosa flores, appreciate that. Retired lieutenant from the nypd standing by, also on site is james galiano, formerly with the fbi. James, when you see now what were starting to learn about the person who did this, where is the investigation now . What are the priorities for Law Enforcement . Anderson in the 21st century, every one of us have a digital footpri footprint. Investigators are going back, checking records, going back and checking ezpass, where he traveled, anything he might have put on social media. We call that digital exhaust. Theyre going through that exhaustively. The second thing is the human element, shoe leather, going out and knocking on doors and talking to people about what they knew about him. Its starting to paint a much better, much clearer picture of who this guy was. Daryn, in terms of what Law Enforcement can learn after an incident like this. I know the fbi looks at every active shooter situation to see, just as they look at every terror attack and even the nypd looks at every terror attack in the world,i assume Law Enforcement around the country is going to be looking at what happened here to see if theres any lessons that can be learned in terms of the police reaction. Absolutely. Law enforcements vision on this is going to be clear and concise. What theyll look to do is extract, not just what happened here, but look at what happened in newtown, in kentucky recently. Theyll grasp that amalgamation of different experiences and use that moving forward. Its an arduous task to investigate these types of mass shootings. However, Law Enforcement is fit for the challenge and were Getting Better and better as we progress. Its one of the things, james, you and i have talked about before, how much has been learned since columbine. Its a sickening thing that there have been so many incidences to learn from, but just in terms of Law Enforcement responding its been a complete sea change. Absolutely. In Walking Around and talking to some of the grieving parents and parents of other students locally, they were so impressed with the police response. Post columbine which happened in april of 1999, weve learned lots of lessons. The problem is the strategic level. It its an uncomfortable conversation because it involves politics. As soon as you put the words gun and control in the same sentence, people end up retreating to their separate corners. The planet is 4. 5 billion years old. Civilization around for thousands of years. Weve only been a country for 241 years, we hang on to this relic from 1781 and say what the Founding Fathers intended should still apply today. We have to look at this. No laws from what we can tell right now, were violated by the purchase of this weapon by a 19yearold kid who was able to use an assault weapon and terrorize this school. One thing that has changed so much since columbine, its no longer the first officers set up a perimeter around the school, wait for the s. W. A. T. Team. The first officers who arrive, whether its a traffic cop, a bicycle cop, they get together, they go in to get the shooter. I think what a lot of people dont realize is that Police Departments around the country, and i know for a fact the nypd, every officer is now being trained and has been trained now in how to respond to an active shooter. Absolutely. When we go back to columbine, it was a different philosophy. It was more or less a waitandsee, bring in greater resources. Now were focusing on immediately confronting the threat and taking that person or neutralizing the threat as quickly as possible. Oftentimes, as you mentioned earlier, the Patrol Officer, its that patrol cop thats the first person on the scene. Its not the fbi. Its not the atf. So its important that we employ the necessary professional development for that Patrol Officer who is the first line of defense on the scene at these types of instances. One of the things, when we look at how these zones are set up, traditionally youll have a hot zone, warm zone and cold zone. In the hot zone, this is where the thick of things are occurring. You have officers that are wearing bulletresistant armor, so to speak, capable of i shouldnt say suppressing, but stopping the threat. The warm zone is a little further away. The same holds true. Officers retrofitted with this type of body armor. The cold zone, officers are conducting pedestrian traffic, things to that effect. Were constantly learning, but this is making us better and more able to protect the citizens of the United States of america. The other thing that is so interesting to me is how quickly these incidents take place. Were talking about a matter of minutes when most of the fatalities take place. We dont know at this point how long exactly the shooter was inside the school for, but it seems a pretty limited amount of time. He went into the stairwell, took the rifle the gun out of the case that he brought it in, went to a few classrooms and then left the rifle and left the school. The one piece of this which is going to be a boone of information is this young man didnt kill himself or conduct suicide by cop. What were learning as these things have happened over the course of the last 19 years, most of these instances take place between three to nine minutes. Generally speaking the person ends up dying either in a shootout with police or taking their own lives. Theres limited use of crisis negotiation. In the old days, you had hostage negotiators, and that was a central piece of this because there were demands. Terrorists wanted the release of their colleagues in a jail or somebody wanted money and a plane and wanted to go to aruba. These days that doesnt happen. Theres not that negotiation where youre trading certain things to the hostage takers for hostages to be released. People are looking to kill as many people as possible which, again, anderson, brings it right back to the debate about the assault weapons. Having an assault weapon in an unhinged persons hands like this 19yearold. James gag an know and darin, thank you. 14yearold alice so alhadeff, a freshman described as beautiful, smart, intelligent. The parents had a message for our nation and the president. They spoke with alisyn. My child is dead. I cant help her. But i can help all those other kids at stone man Douglas High School. Lets protect barron, and lets also protect all these other kids here in parkland, in florida, and everyone everywhere else in the United States of america because we earned it, just like how you earn the right to protect barron. You need to help us now. We need security now for all these children that have to go to school. We need Action Action action when does it stop in these are our kids. How do we get some controls . Is now the time to talk about this and fixing this . It is the time to talk about it now and tomorrow and the next day and the next day after that and every day after until all of this is resolved. Theres peter wang, a 15yearold freshman who his friends remember as hilarious in life, and in the momention before his death, a hero. Peter was very funny. I used to joke around with him and call him Peter Griffin and he would laugh with me. He was one of my closest friends, and he was very kind. He died a gentleman, holding the door for other students. Knowing hes gone is going to haunt me forever. A freshman, anderson, who his last actions in life were making sure that other people got out okay. There are so many stories of heroism amongst those 17 that were hearing in the hours and days after the shooting. Diane, appreciate that, thanks very much. Whats so striking from parkland is the response from the students, the survivors who are now speaking out in hopes of change. Cam is one of the survivors speaking out. Here is part of what he wrote to cnn. He said we cant ignore the issues of gun control that this tragedy raises. So im asking no, demanding we take action now. Why . Because at the end of the day the students at my school felt one shared experience, that our politicians that abandoned us by failing to keep assault weapons out of our school. Im joined by cameron kasky. Thanks for joining me. Thanks for having me. Ive never been to a school after a shooting like this where ive met so many students talking about issues of gun when so many politicians are saying now is mott the time to talk about the it. Everybody has done an amazing job, the Stoneman Douglas community, the parkland community. Everyone is supportive and grieving and inspired. Were going to use this to try to make Something Better out of it. Do you think change is possible in terms of the kind of change you want . Everything where ive heard we cant do anything and its out of our hands, i think thats a facade that the gop is putting up. After every shooting the nra sends a memo saying send your thoughts and prayers. This is the only country where this kind of thing that happens. Ive heard from people, they dont have gun drills. We had to prepare extensively at Stoneman Douglas. This is something that can be stopped and will be stopped. I talked to the football coach yesterday who was saying this school in its 28 years, this school was the most prepared of any school he had ever taught in. They had repeated drills. Any school that could have been ready for this, there was a single point of entry, there was an armed guard, and yet it happened. The facultyality Stoneman Douglas are amazing. Our security guards are amazing. Aaron feis died protecting us. All of them knew exactly what they were doing. Ive been through it a million times, talked about it a million times. We thought we would be the last people to have to deal with this. If we didnt have the faculty we did, this could have been a lot worse. Obviously there are a lot of politicians focusing on Mental Health and saying something needs to be done about that. I think Mental Health is important. I think its being used as a way to get out of discussing gun control. I think theres a clear connection between the two. Im not trying to take everybodys guns away. It was a 19yearold who legally bought an ar15 which is a weapon of war. If he had been through the least bit of screening, somebody would have said this person does not need a weapon like that. I think there need to be a lot more regulations put on guns and it needs to be a lot harder to get them. Youre a junior right now. Obviously youre thinking about college, what you want to do afterward. Has this changed your thought about what you want to do with your life . Absolutely. Ive always been inspired i think ive always been passionate and had a drive. This is something completely new. This feels like a calling. This doesnt feel like a hobby. Im trying to spread as much awareness about this as i can. I hope to continue doing that as long as it takes. You have a brother who has special needs. You wanted to say and compliment the Police Officers. You went in to take care of your brother, make sure he was okay. You were in the room when the officers came in. Bso and the s. W. A. T. Team, everybody handled it better than i could have possibly wished or expected. When the s. W. A. T. Team broke the window and came in, they were pointing assault rifles at us, saying put their hands up. The teacher in the room, just so you know, there are special needs in here who might not be able to do that. That was very scary. They handled it in such an amazing way. They took good care of us. All the special needs students, including my brother were able to get there as seamlessly as possible. You set up a Facebook Page as well you want people to know about. Yes. Its called never again msd. Its a Central Place for people in broward and all over the world who are sending their support because weve gotten amazing support from everybody. A lot of people feel the same way we do. A lot of people want to show everybody in the polls were not having this anymore. Were you at the vigil last night . I was at the vigil yesterday. It was painful to see how many people were touched by this. Its good to know everybody is inspired. Theres a section of society that will shrug this off and sends their thoughts and prayers do you worry, a week from now when the media moves on, this will become another in a long line of tragedies . That was the thought i had. Im not worried. Ive never seen this reaction before. Everybody is sending support, everybody believes what were doing. Were done believing this is inevitable. This can be stopped. This needs to be stopped. For those saying thoughts and prayers and this is not the type to talk about guns. This is the time to talk about guns. Thoughts and prayers are appreciated and everybody who is thinking about us and sending support, we do hear you and we appreciate you and we thank you. But theres much more that can be done, much more that needs to be done and much more that people like marco rubio and rick scott are not doing. Its scary to think these are the people who are making our laws when our Community Just took 17 bullets to the heart. It feels like the only people who dont care are the people making the laws. Cameron, appreciate your time. So sorry for what youve been through. Thank you. Wish you the best. An initial investigation shows the Florida Shooter fired nearly 150 shots from his rifle. Thats according to a Law Enforcement source. The sources also say the shooter brought bought three other guns in the last year. Joining me now is republican congressman charlie dent. We just had a young student on from the school, cameron, who is saying he wants this to be a catalyst for some kind of change, particularly on gun laws. You cosponsored legislation on bump stocks in the wake of los angeles thlas vegas that seemed like there was momentum for. How fris straightening is that for you and what would you like to see changed . Anderson, it is. Reporter frustrating for me that we havent moved some pieces of legislation. After sandy hook came the toomeymanchin bill that enhanced background checks for private sales of firearms. That went nowhere. After this after las vegas, of course, we all learned about the bump stocks. Frankly i didnt know what a bump stock was before las vegas, but i do now. So Carlos Curbelo of south florida, that area, introduced legislation that would ban the bump stock. We should do that. Susan collins introduced legislation on the nofly list, that we would make sure nobody who is on the nofly list should ever be able to receive a firearm. That went nowhere. We should go after the low hanging fruit. Some of these bills i believe we can pass. Unfortunately it seems that in congress being able to pass a bipartisan incrementable changes on controversial issue has become increasingly difficult. See what happened yesterday on the dreamer bill. 90 issue or 80 issue and we cant come to a consensus on it. Its very unfortunate. Its sad and the country is noticing. The sides are so polarized and people are speaking past each other and vilifying one another. Most people who own guns are decent people and they want them for protection and they want them for hunting and tradition, and its easy for people on the other side to vilify gun owners and its easy for gun owners to believe that people who want gun control want to take away their guns. There is a feeling among some gun owners and certainly the nra that any kind of increased gun legislation, its a slippery slope, one step closer to the government knocking on your door and trying to take away your guns. I agree with you, anderson. I dont abide by the camels nose under the tent theory on all of this. Back in 1995 when tom ridge was governor of pennsylvania and i served in the general assembly, at that time with Republican Legislature and republican governor, we passed legislation to require background checks for private sales of miss stols. We did that. We brought together the nra and gun control advocates, Law Enforcement, and we came to a consensus. Unfortunately it doesnt seem we have that ability these days to bring these people together. Look, i own firearms, too. A lot of people own firearms. We can certainly pass reasonable, incremental common sense measures on bump stocks, background checks, the nofly list. We can do this. We just cant get a vote on these types of issues on the floor. The issue of Mental Health is something a number of republican legislators have brought up, obviously the president has brought it up as well. Where are you obviously theres a lot of Mental Health advocates who worry about stigmatizing people who have Mental Health. There was that obamaera regulation that was repealed by President Trump, and i know you voted to repeal it as well, about getting people who receive complete disability from the Social Security administration and cant work and also cant even manage their own disability, they have to have somebody else do it. Under the obama regulation their name, 75,000 to 80,000 of them would have been given over to the firearms database in order to prevent them from getting a weapon. Whats interesting, not only did the nra oppose it, but so did the aclu and disability groups because they felt it denied those people due process because of the class of disability they have. You dont want to stigmatize people with mental illness, is there something more that can be done to prevent people who shouldnt have weapons from getting them . The toomeymanchin bill i mentioned earlier, that had a provision that would basically protect Health Care Providers from any liability when they transmit Mental Health information to the instant check system quite often that information hadnt been transmitted. I think we need to provide protections from the Health Care Providers from lawsuits under hipaa. By the way, in the last congress we passed a law, tim murphy legislation that made comprehensive changes to our Mental Health systems. I dont think the Mental Health issue should stop us from taking on some of the common sense gun measures that i mentioned a few moments ago. Youre obviously going to be leaving congress. Do you really believe change is possible . There are so many students here who i have talked to who seem mobilized, who seem to be angry, who seem to think that this time something can be done. After newtown, a lot of folks thought the deaths of toddlers and little kids would mobilize change and it didnt. Well, i think thats what weve seen after the shootings, that theres an initial surge of energy to act and then that seems to dissipate. But i hope this time we do take on some of those bills. Like i said, on the enhanced background checks, the bump stocks, the nofly list. I think those are things we can do now. I hope this energizes us to act on more than just Mental Health because the country is clearly beyond disturbed by whats happened. Like i said, this hurts this situation is very painful, as i think i mentioned to you earlier, my daughters boyfriend went to this high school, knows families that have been impacted by this horrible tragedy. So i think its time we do something, bipartisan approaches can be accomplished. Its a matter of the theres a political will to take them up on the house floor and the senate floor. Congressman charlie dent, appreciate your time. Thank you very much. Thank you, anderson. President trump will get an oval Office Briefing this morning on the School Shooting investigation. Thats the latest tweet from President Trump. Not sure when hell be coming here. Also news youll only see on cnn, former Trump Campaign adviser rick gates is working on a plea agreement with Robert Mueller. That will bring the probe one step closer to a possible case against President Trump and members of his team. Sara murray broke the story and joins us live from washington. Explain whats going on. Reporter this could be a potentially Significant Development in the russia probe, the notion that rick gates is finalizing a plea deal with Robert Mueller. Hes already spoken with muellers team. We know plenty of Trump Associates met with muellers team, spoke with them through the course of the investigation. This meeting is different, its known as a queen for a day interview, essentially where gates goes in, puts his cards on the table. Think of it as a kind of offtherecord interview and prosecutors decide, what is this information worth to us, what kind of deal are we willing to strike . You sort of move forward from there. This is a situation thats still very much in flux. Its interesting for a couple reasons. One, rick gates is a codefendant with Paul Manafort, the former Trump Campaign chairman in this criminal case. Obviously this is potentially troubling you as if youre Paul Manafort. Both of these men pleaded not guilty. Obviously if gates is inching toward a plea deal, that can change the calculation. It can put pressure on Paul Manafort. If you are bob mueller, if youre the special counsel, gates cooperation could be a Building Block for you as you try to build a potential case either against President Donald Trump or against any number of his associates. When we talked to the white house about this, they certainly downplayed any notion of a plea agreement. They say if theres a plea agreement where rick gates will flip on Paul Manafort, that doesnt make a difference to us. The white house believes the only thing mueller is interested in has to do with their financial activities, Business Activities before they were working with Donald Trumps president ial campaign or before they had anything to do with the transition or after that fact. They certainly are projecting an air of confidence. Although a source in the white house says the president feels sympathy for rick gates and Paul Manafort, that theyve been stuck in these legal proceedings. He thinks the only reason theyre stuck in this mess is because of the russia probes which the president has called time and time again on twitter a witch hunt. Its not really true for the white house to say what Paul Manafort was accused of is all before he was involved with the Trump Campaign. Some of it did carry over. Its also interesting that the white house is saying this has nothing to do with us, just building a case against Paul Manafort. That could be true, but it could be an effort to build up a case against Paul Manafort and get a deal from him to build up a case against somebody else if there is a case against somebody else and he has information. Reporter right, anderson. Thats what we know about how these cases tend to work. In this case people involved in previous cases like this. We saw obviously that flynn is cooperating with Robert Mueller. Now we know theres a chance that gates will be cooperating with mueller. You try to flip people along the way to build more information, to build more sources to what your ultimate target is. Obviously when it comes to the special counsel, we dont know what case hes building or against who. Thats why everyone is watching this to thinkifigure out where going. Of course, the white house is going to down play this, insist its not going to come near the president or the west ring. The reality is we dont know enough about that, we wont know until Robert Mueller comes out and tells us what he has or has not found. Sara, briefly, how much do we know about what steve bannon has communicated or how much he has talked to Robert Mueller . Reporter we know he spent many hours getting drilled by muellers team over the course of the week. This was a no holds barred interviewed. He was expected to be questioned about the firing of fbi director james comey as well as the decision to fire michael flynn, the ousted National Security adviser. Thats a very different setting than what we saw from steve bannon when he has been up on the hill. Remember he was in front of the House Intelligence Committee yesterday and refused to talk about anything that happened in the white house, refused to talk about anything that happened during the president ial transition because he said the white house asked him to invoke executive privilege. That doesnt happen in a mueller interview. Sara murray, appreciate that. Well continue to check in with you. A deal on immigration looking doubtful this morning. A bipartisan bill failing in the senate along with another more conservative white house. Suzanne malveaux on capitol hill, where does it stand . Reporter it is in limbo. A lot of people saying they dont know where theyll go from here. It was a crushing blow not only to 2 million undocumented immigrants whose fate is in the balance, but also to many members of congress who were visibly disappointed, angry, resigned, the motions all over the place in those four different plans. None of them hitting the 60vote threshold that was needed. The bipartisan plan that likely would have passed, the 25 billion border security, path to citizenship for daca recipients, the dreamers, three votes shy of getting to the 60. Also the president s plan, very crushing blow there. Only 39 votes for that particular plan. It would have limited legal immigration. Its all over the map. The blame game has started. Democrats very much unified, blaming this on trump, and then a wide variety of republican responses from Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell who feels like hes done his job by putting it to the senate floor to also other republicans like Susan Collins who feel like theres got to be another way, something else. You do have plans that are much more limited in scope, bandied about, talked about behind the scenes. So far, anderson, it doesnt look like theres anything that is coming together or coalescing that would be put forth that would get the kind of support needed from these dreamers. Anderson . Suzanne malveaux. Appreciate that. More from parkland, florida, coming up as well. A Community Still reeling, searching for answers. The first funeral since the massacre is today just moments away. Well be right back. Whos the new guy . They call him the whisperer. The whisperer . Why do they call him the whisperer . He talks to planes. He talks to planes. Watch this. Hey watson, whats avionics telling you . Maintenance records and performance data suggest replacing capacitor c4. Not bad. Whats with the coffee maker . Sorry. We are not on speaking terms. Well, it is hard to imagine, but sickening to say just minutes from now the first funeral begins here in parkland, florida. It is for 14yearold alyssa alhadeff, a daughter, friend, respected young woman in this community. A community once called the safest in all of florida and probably still is the safest in all florida, a place where people specifically move to raise their families. Joining me now is michael udine, former parkland mayor and former Broward County commissioner. You have a daughter who was at this school. Can this school so many people here do not want this school and this community to be defined by this. I think that, at this point, after getting over the shock and disbelief, thats the key thing that im hearing and that im pushing for people. Parkland is an amazing city. This school is an Amazing School. Youre seeing the kids that are going on tv, these are kids that are achievers, be it in drama, business, school, academics, were going to rebound because this is an Amazing School and an amazing setting. I talked to the football coach yesterday, and, i mean, he was heart broken. One thing he said, he used to teach in west virginia, he said in his 28 years in schools, he had never been to a school that was as well prepared, that had done as many drills for active shooters, for fire drills, for anything, and even the fire drill they had in the morning, the teachers were on point, everybody was in line. We one thing we did as the city is we made sure through the school board that this school has an armed Police Officer, every school in parkland has a School Resource deputy that is and a single point of entry as well. Yeah. Now, can a kid get in another way . They try. These kids, it is a big school. But the goal is, single point of entry, we have a School Resource deputy and we try to make this school as safe as possible. And were going to look at what happened and were going to see if there is ways to improve, where there is ways to improve and how to make things better. How does a community bounce back from Something Like this . I think if you saw last night at the vigil we had, almost 15,000 strong, our community if there is any community that can come back, parkland will come back. We are a tight knit with neighbor community. Were the type of community where we can like a family, we can squabble among ourselves internally, but well come together when there is outside sources. People come from all over the country to live here. Youre from new jersey. Football coach was from west virginia. People come here specifically, they want parkland, they want the lifestyle that parkland is, were the typical suburban community and they want the school. People are moving here specifically to get their kid in this school. They want to be in the boundary for Douglas High School and were going to make sure that that continues. We are going to do whatever we can so that this event doesnt define Douglas High School, and doesnt define parkland. It is interesting. Sadly ive been on a number of communities that have experience a School Shooting and i never met kids who so quickly in the wake of a shooting are talking about issues of gun control, a lot of politicians are focused on Mental Health, but does it surprise you to hear the kids saying, thoughts and prayers are great, but we need to do more . It doesnt surprise me at all. I know these kids personally. Im at this school once every other week, my kids all graduated here, my daughter is a senior here. These are kids that are active, that are engaged, almost any discipline in this school we have leaders. Number one Baseball Team in the state. Cnns rosa flores joins me now with much more. What are you learning . Reporter well, anderson, as you mentioned, were learning that 150 rounds were fired inside this school.
