A terrible act. An act of unthinkable tragedy. So many of the victims children. The sheriff here says more than ten of those killed were children. The victims range in age from 5 to 72 years old. One of those killed was the pastors 14yearold daughter. The pastors wife says most of our congregation is gone. We have many questions about the killer himself. Why was he allowed to buy a gun . He was discharged for bad conduct from the air force. He served time for Domestic Abuse. He was denied a gun permit in the state of texas, yet still was able to buy the ruger assaultstyle weapon that he used to carry out this horrific killing. Want to bring in cnns brian todd from a different Vantage Point here at this church for what were learning this morning. Brian . John, some new information that were learning this morning about the shooter, according to the sheriff of Wilson County, joe tackitt, the shooter had two weapons on him when he went into this church yesterday. He had a handgun as well as that ar556 assault rifle. The sheriff saying hes not sure at this timesed that handgun inside the church. Also from the sheriff this morning, he says the gunman suffered wounds from a civilian and then he shot himself, but its not clear if the wounds that he died from were actually inflicted by the civilian or if they were selfinflicted wounds. Thats new information this morning. Also what you just mentioned john, very interesting new information about the shooters inlaws. Sheriff joe tackitt saying the inlaws did attend this church on occasion but were not there at the time. They arrived afterward. I was also told by the sheriff moments ago that investigators have gone to the shooters parents house they live roughly 30 to 45 minutes away from here, from the Texas Rangers have gone to the shooters parents house to talk to them and to try to get some more information on this. Weve been reporting that shooter identified as Devin Patrick kelley, 26 years old, was an air force veteran, he was courtmartialed for bad conduct in 2012 for assault on his spouse and on a child. He was also divorced in that year. And the divorce records show that there was no child in the marriage. So was the child maybe a child from a previ from a previous marriage . Maybe another child . Were digging on all of that information as with well, john. So again, just getting some bits and pieces and new information on the shooter. You mentioned Governor Greg Abbott on our air a short time ago and the question of the shooter applying for a license to carry a gun. Heres what the governor said. Devin kelley sought to get a license to carry a gun in the state of texas, but the state of texas denied him the ability to get a gun. So how was it that he was able to get a gun . By all the facts that we seem to know, he was not supposed to have access to a gun, so how did this happen . That is one of the unknowns out there. A lot of unknowns out there also, the main unknown ha we have right now is the specific motivation but maybe a clue in that the shooters inlaws did attend this church but were not there at the time. One little tidbit of information, there is private video in existence of the service but the video does not show much. John . All right. Bl brian todd. We have breaking news. Im going read it to you, we did learn that killer, im not going to use his name, was terminated from a job as an unarmed Security Guard at a nearby amusement park, which people in the area will know. Let me read you part of the statement. The killer worked briefly 5 1 2 weeks this summerer at slitterbarn as a seasonal unarmed night Security Guard. His employment was terminated all our Security Guards must pass a criminal background check through the Texas Department of public safety. Now we do not know why he was terminated. Did the background check bring up the fact that he was convicted of Domestic Abuse while he was in the military, received a bad conduct discharge. Some of the questions we need answers to. Now as horrific as this killing was, the fact is it could have been worse. That in itself is a terrible thought, that 26 people could have been more. One of the reasons it was not more was the heroism of one of the individuals standing with me, Johnnie Langendoff, he chased the killer down in his truck to the county nearby. Johnnie joins me right now with his girlfriend, summer goodell. Thank you for being with us. Johnnie, you know the church is behind us. I understand you were driving by in your truck on the street just one street past tell me what happened . I pulled up to the intersection. I just left the bp station and pulled up to the intersection. As i normally do, going back to her house. Right whenever i pulled up i saw the shooter coming out about where the cars were parked and the other gentleman coming from across the street. Both had weapons drawn and a matter of half a second, there was exchange of gunfire. It lasted just a few seconds. And the shooter got in his vehicle and took off. And the gentleman with the rifle came across the street opened my door and said he shot up the church and we got to chase him and i said lets go. Then we didnt even stop at this intersection. We buzzed right on through and they got pretty fast doing about 95, going down 539, to keep up with him and letting dispatch know where he was going because i didnt think i didnt know if anyone had a clue or not which direction he had gone. I know that all the police were coming to the church to help, but, you know, i wanted to pursue him to make sure he got caught. How long was this chase . It was about 10 or 12 minutes long. How did it end . It ended up with him wrecking his vehicle into the ditch. Did you walk up to the vehicle . No, sir. I stayed on the pavement. The other gentleman got out immediately and drew his rifle on him and he was telling him get out, get out, and the shooter never got out. But we barricaded behind my truck until Police Showed up and i directed traffic to stop in case there was gunfire until Police Showed up. It was pretty much at a standstill. Did you see the killer get shot in the exchange of gunfire that happened behind us . I didnt particularly see anybody get shot. They were just shooting at each other. I couldnt i cant verify any hits. So you saw two men shooting at each other. Yes, sir. The other hero tells you that this killer just shot up a church. He drives off and tells you to chase him. You tell me you say lets go. Yeah. Did you have any second thoughts . What was your running through your head right then . Nothing. Get him. Why . Because thats what you do. You you chase a bad guy. Summer, your boyfriend, just helped, you know, bring down a man who killed 26 people. What do you think of that . I think its awesome. Couldnt pick a better person to do that, right place at the wrong time technically. Did you think he had it in him . Of course. I always believe in him. Does it worry you at all . I wasnt worried until later, all the news stories and Everything Else coming out and i wasnt hearing from him for a while so i did get worried. Johnnie, the other guy, anything you can tell us about him . You know, hes very much a hero. He acted he acted quicker than he could think as well. He did absolutely the right thing which was try to take him down on the scene. You know, from what i know, you know, from what i know he was just taking a nap an heard the gunshots and reacted. What kind of gun did he have . An ar15. Both the killer and the individual you drove had ar15s . The killer from what i heard had a pistol. During the fire fight. Right. Which is the main part that i saw. And then the guy with you, the other hero had his own ar15. His own ar15, yes, sir, he came out bare footed. He was bare footed. No shoes on or nothing but he was ready to act and the Moment Police got there and everything, you know, he did all the right things. Grabbed his gun before he grabbed his shoes. Yes. Which tells you something about the mindset of the other hero involved in this. You said the chase was 12 to 15 minutes long. Going 95 down these, you know, country roads. What was going through your head as this was going on . Not a lot. I like to drive. And so if i can get away with driving fast, well, you know, and i had to catch the guy. I had i had to make sure he was caught. And at one point the gentleman riding with me said you may have to use your truck to get him off the road and there was no hesitation. It was do everything necessary to make sure that this guy is stopped. A chance to have a conversation with the other hero in the car . Not much. No, sir. Police showed up and after everything was taken care of, after the man was confirmed dead, they pretty much separated us, everybody had questions and so much going on that no, sir, we didnt get to talk. Did you know he said he shot up the church. There were 26 people, including a dozen People Killed . No, sir. Summer, you live here. You live nearby. Do you know people who were inside that church . Family and friends and its a small town. Everybody knows each other for the most part. So theres ties everywhere. How are you doing . How is the town doing this morning . Theyre really coming together and thats awesome. Theres a lot of love around here. Theyre going to need the love. Yes. How are you doing . Look, you know, i know that you were driven by the desire to do good. I know you reacted on instincts and you have good instincts right now, but its got to be a shock after Something Like that is over to know the risks you were in. So, how do you feel this morning . Im thankful. Im very grateful. Im i hope that everyone affected is able to rest a little better knowing that this guy, he will nef breathe again. It doesnt serve it justice completely, but hes he wont hurt anyone else ever. And i was thankful that once it was all said and done i got to hold her in my arms again. I got to go home with her. Thats an amazing feeling, specials will i when you know that so many people who were inside that church who knew people inside that church will never be able to hold their loved ones again. Yes, sir. But again as you said, some measure of peace and finality you helped provide. Do you think he might have been able to kill more had you not been there . That is a kind of an unanswerable question. Who knows. They said that his vehicle was completely filled with more firearms and everything, so he was, obviously he, obviously, had a lot going on. And it was put to a stop and thats what matters. Twice going to church this sunday . Probably. Absolutely. All right. Johnnie, summer, thank you both so much. Thank you for bringing us johnnie. Johnnie, thank you for what you did. I think youre an example of quick thinking and bravery. Something not everyone would do. Well, i just did what i thought was right. Thank you so much. Johnnie, summer, thank you. Thank you very much. No problem. Poppy, you know, you hear johnnie explain it, he sees a shootout, his first thought is, lets go. You know not a hesitation. You just do whats right. You go get the bad guys. Lets go. An american hero. John, thank you. We will get back to you in a few minutes. That was extraordinary to hear from him. We are following a lot of news this morning. President trump offering his condolences, his thoughts and prayers, to the families of those victims at the Church Massacre in sutherland, texas. During a News Conference in tokyo he called it a horrific act of evil and said the shooting is a result of the gunmans state of mind, Mental Illness, not a gun situation. Listen to the president. I think that Mental Health is your problem here. This was a very, based on preliminary reports, deranged individual, lot of problems over a long period of time. We have a lot of Mental Health problems in our country. As do other countries. But this isnt a guns situation. The president promised the administrations full support to state and local authorities investigating the shooting. Texas Governor Greg Abbott says this attack is the largest mass shooting in the states history. He ordered flags to fly at half staff across texas today. John berman in Sutherland Springs, texas, 26 People Killed at the First Baptist church hoinds me yesterday during the 11 00 service. Many of those killed were children. There is an investigation ongoing. The shooter is dead but were learning new details about the months preceding this killing. This man was let go as a Security Guard at a water park nearby. Were not quite sure why he was let go, but the slitterbon springs park says they do routine criminal background checks and the killer served time for Domestic Abuse and was let go by the air force for that action. Joining me now is Law Enforcement trainer and former nypd sergeant joe, and Law Enforcement consultant and former nypd detective tom verneny. I want to start with you, and one tidbit from the governor he says the shooting was not random. This church not chosen at random and we do know that the shooters inlaws attended this church though not in the room at the time. That seems like a significant statement from the governor. Good morning. My condolences to the family and friends affected by this awful tragedy. Yeah, i dont think it was a i was getting the idea that it was probably not a random act. As soon as the information came out about his Domestic Violence past. This guy clearly was troubled. I dont generally agree with President Trump on too much, but i can agree Mental Illness has been overlooked for quite a while. This person clearly mentally unstable, but also had a history of violence and was able to somehow get his hands on weapons. This is a story that repeats itself over and over again. Cant go to a movie theater, cant be a first grader in class, now cant go to church. Im not sure, you know, until the pain gets great enough, for enough people, then we can maybe have a conversation about what were going to do about Mental Illness in this country, about common sense gun reform in this country. Well, Mental Illness if it does turn out to be Mental Illness isnt mutually exclusive from a discuss hon on gun laws. The things known about this man raise so many questions. The discharge for bad conduct. Serving time for Domestic Abuse and the fact that he was turned down for a gun permit in the state of texas, yet was able to buy the ruger assault weapon in april of 2016. Those seem incongruous, those facts. Yes, absolutely. I think were going to find out more as they establish the lingage between the per traitor and the crime scene and the gun, of course. One of the things theyre going to investigate is going to be focusing on how he obtained that gun. The atf im sure is on top of this. If this was a loophole we know that there was i believe the president removed the section if anybody had that Mental Illness part that you could still obtain a gun. I mean, heres here is an example of where some politics can play into these tragedies. We have to be really mindful of that. And as investigators go forward, we need to be able to establish this motive. I mean, i call it the homicide triangle, love, money, drugs, generally the three major motives for somebody to do something. This might factor in the love factor with the family. So investigators will uncover that. I think social media, his compute, any manifestos he left behind through the search warrants we will learn more about the killer as the days go forward. Yeah. Tom, whats going on in the investigation right now . What do you think that, you know, the Texas Rangers and the fbi are doing . Well, luckily you have two great criminal investigative bodies that are involved here, Texas Rangers are very good at what they do and the fbi as we know. Im confident they will get to the bottom of this. Unlike some of the other recent situations like las vegas, where were still trying to piece together what the motive was here, i think this might be a little easier in the sense this is a local guy, you know, we know who he is, they know who he is, where he came from. Thats going to speed along the investigation a little bit because this is not just some unknown whack job coming from parts unknown. That will help a little bit. And yeah, theyre going to want to know and comb through his social media if hes on that, his phone records, any contacts that hes had recently since that firing that was discussed earlier, we want to know what there has to be something, something that made him snap and commit this horrific act like there are in all of these acts unless you talk about someone who is aligned with some sort of mission like when we talked about the new york massacre that took place last week. Where someone is radicalized for some reason. This is probably more of a situation where he just he was he snapped, had access to weapons and then went out and committed this horrific act in a church. But if he snapped he snapped so many years ago when he committed the act of Domestic Violence. If he snapped he snapped in a way that got him fired from the water park. There are things, there were signs along the way that were either missed or didnt matter, as far as as far as some of the gun restrictions were concerned. Joe wasnt to ask you, you cant see it, Johnnie Langendoff the man we talked to who helped chase down this gunman is standing next to me being mobbed by the media next to me, maybe you can pull that shot up from a different camera, he and another man chased this man. The other man pulled out a rifle and engaged in a gun shootout with him. What have we learned about Mass Shootings and the mass casualty events. Is this the type of thing that almost needs to happen or is this the type of thing instead of running and hiding in place do they need to be confronted is it. Thats the third part the fight part. This gentleman acted on instinct, get in a truck and drive off. You could even in his own words they didnt realize what they were doing until after it was over. As a former Law Enforcement officer i can tell you you do things and dont realize it until after the fact like say what did i get myself involved with. Its pretty amazing. We want to make sure that public doesnt take the law into their own hands either. Its a very dangerous line that were walking here. And we got to make sure that other people dont get injured or Law Enforcement comes on the scene and confronts the wrong person too. That is also a possibility. We have to be mindful of that. In a Perfect WorldJohnnie Langendoff wouldnt have to chase a killer 95 miles an hour down a road. Thanks so much for being with us. I appreciate it. Poppy . We have a lot ahead. Former trump Campaign ChairmanPaul Manafort wants more freedom to travel while he is while he awaits trial. You see him making his way into court this morning. He will make the case. Will the judge allow it . Next. Accused of obstructing justice to theat the fbinuclear war, and of violating the constitution by taking money from foreign governments and threatening to shut down news organizations that report the truth. If that isnt a case for impeaching and removing a dangerous president , then what has our government become . Im tom steyer, and like you, im a citizen who knows its up to us to do something. Its why im funding this effort to raise our voices together and demand that elected officials take a stand on impeachment. A Republican Congress once impeached a president for far less. Yet today people in congress and his own administration know that this president is a clear and present danger whos mentally unstable and armed with nuclear weapons. And they do nothing. Join us and tell your member of congress that they have a moral responsibility to stop doing whats political and start doing whats right. Our country depends on it. Its a like, a dagger . Breaking news Paul Manafort whose codefendant rick gates in court this morning moments ago trying to bargain for freedom out on bail. Youre looking at images of rick gates a major part of the Trump Campaign and transition team, the judge made a key decision. Jessica schneider is outside the courthouse. What did the judge rule . Another defeat for the legal team of Paul Manafort and rick gates. The judge minutes ago ruling they must remain under house arrest with gps monitoring. Both of their lawyers said that theyre unsecured bond, 10 million for Paul Manafort, 5 million for rick gates should have been enough to keep them here. They have argued to release the terms of house arrest but the judge saying she doesnt have enough information. In particular, there are some financial disputes as to Paul Manaforts net worth. Also, to what the value of some of his properties are that he offered up as collateral for that 10 million bond. He offered up properties in palm beach as well as new york city including an apartment in trump tower. But the judge saying here she doesnt have enough information, citing with government prosecutors who say the net worth of Paul Manafort and his Properties Worth are still too unclear at this point. The government has repeatedly argued that both of these men are flight risks. So the judge saying this morning, that they will stay under house arrest but did add a caveat saying she will reconsider at the next court date, december 11. She said once they give a little more information, clarify their financial dealings, she said it is a possibility she could release these men under gps monitoring but a carveat would e they would have to stay away from airports and train stations because the government does believe both men are flight risks. Their attorneys pushing back on this, but the next court date will be december 11th. For now both of these men still under house arrest. Poppy. Until then at least. Jessica schneider outside the courthouse, thank you for that breaking news. This morning it is across the front page above the fold in just about every newspaper there is this morning, a member of the trump administration, though, is fighting back after these leaked documents show financial ties from one of the key members of the president s cabinet to a company that has a link to Vladimir Putins family. This is coming from the socalled paradise papers. Revealed by the International Consortium of investigative journalists. 13 plus million documents over 70 years leaked by bermuda law firm. Christine is here who reports on politics and money. Lets go through this. Its complicated and go through the points here. One of the key points everyone is seeing wilbur ross, the commerce secretary, at the front of all of this why . Thats right. These paper make a link between one of the companies that wilbur ross has a stake in called navigator a shipping company and Russian Elites. Nn we knew wilbur ross owned a stake. We didnt know that one of the main customers of the shipping company are Russian Elites including putins soninlaw is behind one of the customers. So here we have an administration that is being investigated for all of its ties to russia and election meddling and at the same time highlevel Administration Officials who did not, you know, disclose these relationships with russians. They werent required to on the Financial Disclosure documents but lawmakers are arguing in the Senate Confirmation process when asked about their financial holdings, when they were questioned about why they were holding on to certain assets, they should have been wilbur ross should have gone above and beyond given the backdrop. What is he saying this morning to defend all of it . What we would typically, you know, we typically expect in this okay, hey, its all over in my Financial Disclosure form and if you go through it youll see there are Parent Companies that hold this Company Called navigator and it is all over his Financial Disclosure form. That misses the story. The story here is that the secretary is financially profiting from a relationship with Russian Elites. Its interesting that he didnt choose to divest, he divested 80 companies, praised for it by democrats, senator Richard Blumenthal in the confirmation hearing and then blumenthal goes on to say you did it to avoid any conflict of interest correct, thats correct, and thats where people are saying he could have jumped in. Could have jumped in absolutely. And to your point ethics officials knew about his stake in this company. Right. Right. And they allowed him to keep it. Its just that theres a problem with disclosure in our country and the way it works. It doesnt drill down far enough for you to know whos behind these. A second big headline from the papers a big, big investor rich investor in russia who has poured a lot of kremlin money into facebook and twitter, and some connection to jared kushner, the president s soninlaw. Youre talking about jiri millner. He was involved in both of the deals in terms of the investment in facebook and twitter and separately, he also invested in one of Jared Kushners companies called cadre, a tech investment company, real estate related and again here giving more ammunition to lawmakers who said given the backdrop of all of these investigates, hey, you guys should have been more up front with your disclosures and your financial and your financial dealings with possible russian actors and thats a problem. His response this morning is nothing to see here, nothing more than business . Exactly. Thank you. We appreciate it. Much more to come from these papers. The beginning of what will be a week long disclosure. Joining us ron brownstein, political analyst amy parns. Nice to have you both here. Ron let me begin with you, democrats, senator blumenthal are crying foul and saying youre not releasing you werent forthcoming with us, sir, wilbur ross, in your confirmation hearings. Big picture how do you see this for the administration . The big picture is just astonishing not only how many Administration Officials have contact in one way or another with russian interests, but how often that contact is not disclosed. I mean it has been a remarkable pattern. Were just done with the this was disclosure. Thats the thing. No. The depth of the the depth of the relationship. Okay. That he had the opportunity to clarify was not. And im saying we just were just days past the question which i dont think is by any means done of whether jeff sessions, you know, misled or actively lied to the committee, the judiciary committee, about not being aware of any Campaign Officials who had contacts with russia which was contradicted by the papadopolous guilty plea. I mean it really poppy, what, you know, the big question is, not only why there are so many contacts of so many different sources, the washington post, for example, is chronicling the Campaign Contacts and business contacts, but why so persistently officials have not fully disclosed and shined a light on them from the beginning. Amy, one thing that i think complicates the narrative here for the administration, every time Something Like this drops, is that this is the sort of selfproclaimed drain the swamp administration. This makes that argument harder. Right. Exactly. And hes had other problems with other Administration Officials, as ron said. You know, nine people are being investigated with links to russia. I think this is another drip in the ocean of water thats coming and it is problematic because every day President Trump is trying to, you know, move forward with his agenda, he is and the white house has this looming cloud over it and they cant get rid of it. Amy, just listen to how wilbur ross responded this morning, he did cnbc in london, i thought his last answer the most telling as he pointed to the media, listen. Theres nothing wrong with it at all. I think its just an example of the press trying to find anything they can, however remote or silly, to attack the president and somehow link him to russia. This is nonsense. Nonsense . All about the media, amy . No. I think, you know, if anything, they should have been crossing their ts and dotting their is here. Everything connected to russia is a story. Because everything the campaign has been showing links, there is an fbi investigation right now, i mean, everything is related to this. I think they had to be very careful going into this knowing that russia was such a big story line. Ron, to you, switching gears completely here to the horrifying massacre at that church in texas, less than 24 hours ago, the president responding to it while on the trip in asia. Listen to what he said. I think that Mental Health is your problem here. This was a very, based on preliminary reports, deranged individual. Lot of problems over a long period of time. We have a lot of Mental Health problems in our country as do other countries, but this isnt a guns situation. Ron, your response on twitter last night, responding to House Speaker paul ryan was the president was quick off the mark with a lot more policy than prayers after the new york city terror attack. What are your thoughts . Right. This is the catechism at this point and i think it really is not no one should expect any change from the administration really is how voters will react. Whenever there is a mass shooting that involves a white shooter, a native born shooter, the argument is going to be that the issue isnt guns, its Mental Health. On its own terms that doesnt even hold up because the administrations, you know, version of the Affordable Care act would have eliminated Mental Health from guaranteed benefits an theyre seeking cuts in medicaid which funds Mental Health and Substance Abuse treatment. If there is a terror attack that has a or a mass killing that has a link to either an immigrant or muslim the argument of the perpetrator its the immigration laws or terror laws or we need to be smart. That is going to be what were going to get. The question is the public willing to accept this kind of routine mass killing as kind of a new normal in American Life or will there be shift in the Politics Around some of issues having do both with Mental Health and access to guns. I dont think you will get change from the administration. The mold from the president is clear and you will see these divergent responses based on who is committing the violence. Ron, thank you. Amy, we appreciate it very much. It is stunning to consider the thakts that three of the deadliest five shootings in modern American History have been in the last 17 months. You know, i bet yesterday morning you woke up and didnt expect to be where you are this morning covering yet another one. Horrifying. Its 35 days. 35 days since las vegas and here we are in Sutherland Springs. I will say for the people in Sutherland Springs this what is they care about. They want to know what happened here and how to keep it from happening again. Poppy, behind me right now Law Enforcement is setting up for a News Conference. We will hear from local Law Enforcement any minute now on the state of the investigation. And the red cross is here to help with with what is a humanitarian disaster. A human tragedy right now. The red cross onsite to help with that. Much more ahead from Sutherland Springs. Stay with us. Did yon the National Debt . Ssman get elected by talking tough will they stay true to their words . Or did they promise you one thing. Only to do another . Right now, congress is talking about tax cuts that will add trillions to our National Debt and hurt our economy. Its time to tell congress. Dont borrow more money from china. And leave more debt to our kids. Keep your word. Tax cuts shouldnt add to the National Debt. John berman in Sutherland Springs, texas. 26 People Killed in the First Baptist church behind me. We are learning about the victims, the oldest was 72 years old, the youngest just 5 years old. Eight members of one family were killed. The pastors daughter was also killed. Her family is now speaking. Alison kosick joins me with the latest on that. Tell us about belle pomery. The pastors 14yearold daughter annabelle was killed at the church. I tonight know of a 14yearold who would go to Church Without her parents on a day theyre not there. It says so much about her. She is the daughter of the Church PastorFrank Pomeroy and her mom sherri, they were out of town yesterday but her mom released this statement to cnn saying we lost more than belle yesterday and the one thing that gives me a sliver of encouragement is the fact that belle was surrounded by her Church Family she loved fiercely. Our church was not comprised of members or parishioners, we were a close family. We ate together, laughed together, cried together, and worshipped together, and now most of our Church Family is gone. Others who were killed in the massacre, the visiting pastor, also what you mentioned, at least eight members of the same family including a woman five months pregnant, her three children, her brotherinlaw, and his young child. An additional three members of the same family were injured in the shooting, one shot in the head. I want you to listen to a woman who lives across the street from the church and says she heard gunshots and helped a little girl of that family, but she survived. Listen. The First Responder brought her out and she hid, they brought her to me and said, you know, immediately after we dont know, can you just hold her for a minute. She had a bump on her head. Covered in blood. I just tried to get her calm. And, you know, clean her up. Luckily for this little girl one of her family members was still alive. Did come out. Her aunt was on her way to the church as well, so we were able to stop and accidentally get the family together. But i will never forget those shots. Just so heartbreaking. Its amazing the little girl got out because many inside the church were killed or wounded. Were hearing 12 to 14 children were inside the church and the Wilson County sheriff joe tackitt said seeing the children, thats what hurts the most. John . It is so sad. We did speak to a local pastor from another community who had 14 friends who perished, 14 friends who perished inside that church and knew so many of the kids who died as well had been part of that church. Alison kosick, thanks to you. 26 People Killed as we were saying. As shocking as it sounds it could have been worse. Two heros who helped stopped this. One unidentified man who pulled out his gun before he put his shoes on to confront the killer and started an exchange of fire with him and then Johnnie Langendoff i spoke to a few minutes ago driving by in a truck, got the other hero in his truck and then chased the killer down to the next county. Listen to johnnie describe the other guy, the guy with the gun, who may have saved dozens of lives. Listen. Hes very much a hero. He acted quicker than he could think as well. He did absolutely the right thing, which was try and take him down on the scene. You know, from what i know, from what i know he was taking a nap and heard the gunshots and reacted. What kind of gun did he have . He had an ar15. Both the killer and individual you drove had ar15s . The killer from what i heard had a ruger. Had a pistol during the fire fight. Right. I with is the main part that i saw. And the guy with you the other hero had his own ar15. Yes, sir. He came out, he was bare footed. He was bare foot. Yes. Yeah. He had no shoes on or nothing. He was ready to act. And the Moment Police got there and everything, you know, he did all the right things. Grabbed his gun before he grabbed his shoes . Yes. Which tells you something about the mindset of the other hero involved in this. You said the chase was 12 to 15 minutes long. Going 95, down these country roads, what was going through your head as this was going on . Not a lot. I like to drove and so if i can get away with driving fast, well, you know, and i had to catch the guy. I had i had to make sure he was caught. And at one point the gentleman riding with me said you may have to use your truck to get him off the road and there was no hesitation. It was do everything necessary to make sure this guy is stopped. Johnnie langendoff told me, i like to drive, i like to drive fast. Yes, he did break the speed limit here but hes not going to get in any coined of trouble for that because he action almost definitely did save lives. Now behind me you can see theyre setting up for a News Conference. Local Law Enforcement will brief reporters about 25 minutes from now. About 11 15 eastern time. Were waiting for new information on the investigation. Well bring that to you live. The second it happens. Well be right back. Eras. Theyre defined by accomplishments. By victories. By those with the resourcefulness, the ingenuity, and the grit to help ensure the next energy to power our dreams, will be american energy. The era of strategic patience is over those words from President Trump about north korea on this trip to asia. Kim jonguns regime a major topic as the president met with japans Prime Minister shinzo abe. President trump urged him to further arm japan with u. S. Weapons in growing tension with north korea in the region. Joining us now from tokyo is our diplomatic editor nic robinson. First the reaction on the ground to what the president suggested and whether it was welcomed by abe . It was welcomed by abe. The Prime Minister has been quite forward leaning in bringing more capability and capacity to japans selfdefense forces and he was reelected with a strong mandate and spoke about buying more Aircraft Systems from the United States, spoke about buying more naval equipment from the United States and also about more buying more new and better Missile Interceptor systems. One of the names that came up. A new Missile System that will be used in europe next year for the first time and is capable of flying further with a greater range, greater able to cover a greater part of the sky for incoming missile threats. Japan has had two north Korean Missiles fly over it in the past few months during the north Korean Missile test. Those missiles werent shot down. Potentially this would give japan that capacity and the Prime Minister said look, the security situation because of north korea is getting tougher the security situation in the endo Pacific Region is getting tougher and did seem to welcome that from President Trump. One of the things weve seen from the president on the asia trip he met with families of over a dozen japanese citizen whose loved ones were kidnapped by the north korean regime, some of them as long as four decades ago. What did he say and the hope that will come from that . Sure. He met for about 40 minutes sitting in quite a tight little circle with some of the family members. He talked with a mother. He talked with a brother. And, in fact, he talked with somebody who had been abducted and then released back to japan. This gentleman said that he was a bit tense and nervous about going in to meet trump but once he met him he said President Trump was very warm with him, very kind, that, you know, he treated them all well. That was a positive experience. It seemed to be the mother of one of the victims said we hope that President Trump can do something about this. President trump when he was asked in the press conference about this he said that he would highlight the situation, of course he talked about the terrible tragedy that befell Otto Warmbier when taken into north korean custody and got back to the United States and died afterwards. President trump alive to this issue and warming to the fact he had met with families of the abducteeses and would try to do something to highlight their situation. Important to bring the human toll to the floor in all of this. Nic robertson thank you reporting for us where the president is in tokyo.
