Basement. And it looks like im immune for, i dont know, maybe a long time or maybe a short time. It could be a lifetime. Nobody really knows. But im immune. So, so the president is in very good shape. All this as dr. Anthony fauci, the nations leading Infectious Disease expert says his words were taken out of context in a new Trump Campaign ad that touts President Trumps handling of the coronavirus pandem pandemic. Lets get to cnns jeremy diamond. First i want to play the ad and then lets talk about how fauci is responding. President trump is recovering from the coronavirus. And so is america. Together we rose to meet the challenge. President trump tackled the virus headon, as leaders should. I cant imagine that anybody else could be doing more. Jeremy, dr. Fauci is not happy about this. Reporter no, hes certainly not. With good reason. You know, the ad takes dr. Faucis comments completely out of context and also youll notice there is no time stamp for when that ad took place, when dr. Fauci made those comments. This is not happening now as we are sitting on more than 210,000 deaths in the United States. Those comments were from back in march, in the first months of the pandemic. And dr. Fauci says he was taken out of context and he was referring to the Public Health experts in the administration. Listen, he says, in my nearly five decades of Public Service i have never publicly endorsed any political candidate. The comments were attributed to me without my permission were taken out of context from a broad statement i made months ago about the federal Public Health officials. The Trump Campaign is responding from the Campaign Manager saying these are frchlt dr. Faucis own words from a nationally Television Interview in which dr. Fauci was praising the trump administration. The words are spoken accurately and directly from dr. Faucis mouth. Its clear they are taking him out of context, making it sound like hes talking about the president s leadership, when if you listen to the full interview, dr. Fauci is talking about himself and the other Public Health experts. The Trump Campaign recognizing 6 in 10 americans disapprove of the president s handling of the coronavirus and they overwhelmingly trust dr. Fauci over President Trump when it comes to telling them the facts about this pandemic. Okay. And then, jeremy, theres this, the white house to resurrect the scheduled what was the second scheduled debate for this week. It was canceled because the president wouldnt agree to a virtual debate because of his medical condition. So, now what are the demands or requests coming from the white house . Reporter the timeline is super important because the commission on president ial debates announced the second debate was going virtual after President Trump tested positive for coronavirus. The president immediately taking to twitter saying he was not participate in a virtual debate and following that the commission decided to ultimately cancel the debate. The white house saying President Trump has been cleared for public activities by his doctor, dr. Sean conley, and that second debate should be back on the schedule. Listen. The president s ready to debate and his doctors have cleared him for participating in public engagements. Theyve said hes no longer a risk for transmission, so it would be nice if the commission would get the debate back on the schedule. I think, you know, the president hes ready to go. He wants to be on stage debating joe biden in person. So, if theyll do that, get it back on the schedule, i think the president would be happy to show up. Reporter at this point, though, fredericka, its unlikely that debate will be rescheduled. Joe biden has already announced hell be doing a town hall with another network. The president may do something very similar. While we should note while dr. Sean conley has, indeed, President Trump is no longer a risk four the transmission the virus, theres a number of questions he has not answered. We have not had an opportunity hat memo which was released late last night. Whats interesting about phase 2 is eric trump was on air today saying his father is a traditional guy, wouldnt want this kind of Conference Call type debate. But at that point never said anything about an interest to try to get this back on facetoface. Jeremy diamond, thank you so much. More breaking news now. Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer is again warning democrats could boycott judge Amy Coney BarrettsJudiciary Committee vote if republicans dont have enough members present to begin the voting process. Joining me right now is cnn congressional reporter lauren fox. Lauren, what more are you learning . Reporter this has been suspected all along, fredericka. This is why it was so important to understand why any potential absence of republican members on this committee, including the two members who we learned more than a week ago had contracted and tested positive for coronavirus was so important. Because essentially in order to have that vote on thursday, you need to first have a quorum of the committee. If both senator lee and tillis were out, that thursday vote could be compromised because essentially democrats could procedurally just not show up. That makes it hard for senator Lindsey Graham, the chairman of the committee, to even hold a vote. Now, this vote on thursday is traditionally won in which they try to get the nominee out of committee but we do know based on past Judiciary Committee markups, that you can hold that nomination over for an additional week. So, because of the tight timeline that we are talking about here, it was essential that members are in place on thursday so they can have that vote, sessentially a democrat will ask for it to be held over an additional week and then they can have the vote a week from thursday. I know its a little complicated but its very important. Thats why senator schumer said here, and i want to play the tape in just a minute, that he wanted to promise that democrats will not make sure theres a quorum in the Judiciary Committee. Heres what he said. Well, theyre going to the hearing and i will say this, democrat we will talk about when the actual vote occurs in committee and on the floor. Democrats will not be will not supply the quorum, period. Reporter and we, of course, know senator thom tillis said his expectation is hell be virtual when theres opening statements, he plans to be there by thursday. Im told for an aide for senator lee, theyre undecided if lee will be there in person this week. It looks likely that republicans will have the quorum they need. It just speaks to the fact that coronavirus is really overshadowing what is a traditional big deal hearing when it comes to Amy Coney Barretts scotus nomination. Right. Im sure lots of their colleagues are having questions about for tillis and lee about that whether that selfquarantine or that quarantine post diagnosis is now long enough to show up to carry out business. Lauren fox, thank you. President trump is set to return to the campaign trail less than two weeks after he announced that he had contracted covid19. And although his doctor has cleared him to travel, it isnt completely clear if the president is virusfree. On saturday the president held an event on the white house grounds and told the crowd that the coronavirus was disappearing. With me now is Doris Kearns Goodwin is doing a Voter Empowerment event tuesday, a get out the vote effort on how the past informs this election. Good to see you. Thank you. So, all that were seeing from the president in the white house, you know, would you call this desperation of an incumbent president not acknowledging his own coronavirus infection, a crumbling economy and widespread hardship . I think whats happened because of his illness and the situation were in right now with the spiking of the illnesses and the crumbling economy, he knows that not only are the polls going down, but history shows that whenever an incumbent is running for reelection in the middle of a crisis, the crisis is the most important thing that happens. All these other things are side shows, in a certain sense. So it was certainly in 1932 when president hoover failed to take a National Responsibility for the growing depression. No national guidance, no ability to really get the economy moving economy perform everyone kept saying, were turning the corner now, its going to be all right. There was such a yearning to for leadership, he won in a landslide. They said, we have a government, the government still is. I think thats where were at, the yearning for that leadership. It may have been without him getting the illness, we would have been focused on the Supreme Court or focused on law and order situations but now the virus is the center of our election, which it should have been. Were a week out from this moment where the president was at walter reed, he did this video and he said, i get it. Maybe that was a sign posting that there was going to be some empathy coming from the president and then contrast that with yesterdays balcony appearance, his first since his diagnosis. Take a look. Its been a very interesting journey. I learned a lot about covid. I learned it by really going to school. This is the real school. This isnt the lets read the book school. And i get it. And i understand it. And its a very interesting thing. Im going to be letting you know about it. Before go any further, i want the to thank all of you for your prayers. I know youve been praying. I was in that hospital. I was watching down over so many people. I went out to say hello to those people. I took a little heat for it but id do it again. I tell you, id do it again. Theres a different tone judge just a week span that separates that. Were you expecting a president changed by a personal experience, like america has seen in some of his predecessors . There really was a moment there when he talked about the bipartisan support that he had gotten, that he learned a lot about this illness, that i began to think, to imagine, that maybe he would go forth and talk about the importance of how this adversity had changed him and he understood the importance of masks, and he understood the importance of social distancing and would become a national leader. What happened to Franklin Roosevelt is when he got polio, it really did change him. It created a greater sense of humility of spirit, allowed him to connect to ear people to whom fate had dealt an unkind hand, he showed resilience to get through his own paralysis. When he comes into office, he helps the country get through their paralysis with resilience, with optimism with the future but confronting the brutal facts. Every now and then i imagine, maybe this will happen, but obviously we saw it did not happen. Todays New York Times is reminding readers, Trump Campaigned on draining the swamp. But then the New York Times writes, and im quoting now, as president , he built a system of direct president ial influence peddling unrivalled in modern american politics. You know, when asked about that on abc today, the president s son, eric trump, said this were hospitality company. We have tens of millions of people staying at our Properties Every single year. The New York Times is absolute fake news. All they want to do is take down my father. You know whats interesting about the New York Times, im glad you mentioned them, every single day, every single day, starting literally the morning of the debate, theyve dropped some story that theyve been sitting on for literally the last six months or year or two years, to try and influence the election. Its horrible. I mean, you know, the medias gone in this country. The media is gone in this country. Even when i hear the tone of this conversation, i mean, the media has become the activism arm for the democratic party. So, doris, perhaps another example of what you would call desperation by this Reelection Campaign . With 23 days, you know, from election day, demonizing the media, undermining trust in a free and Fair Election during a pandemic, i mean, will this only intensify over the next few weeks . Well, theres no argument about fake news that can compare with what the people are actually experiencing right now in terms of the virus. Not only the numbers have died but the radiation to all their families and all their friends. You cant take i cant claim that anybodys not taking the truth about that. And i think in the end, undermining the trust in our democracy is the most important thing we have to fight for right now. The power of democracy is the power of the ordinary vote. And people have fought for generations, when you think about the revolution, you think about the womens suffrage movement, selma, alabama, lives were given to make that right to vote not be suppressed as its being suppressed now. Thats what we should be fighting right now. Not all these distractions about taxes or fake news. Its the reality of the situation rear in right now. This virus has to get under control before we can even get our country back. And the answer is for people to vote. And to vote without suppression and make sure they get to the polls. If anything, all of this should be added incentive, to not squander this opportunity, this right to vote but get out there and vote, period. Doris kearns goodwin, always good to see you. Thank you. This as a former director for the centers for Disease Control says 20,000 more americans will die from covid19 by the end of this month. Consider this, four states have seen their number of new cases rise 50 or more in the past week. 26 more have increases between 10 and 50 . I want to bring in dr. Blackstock, yahoo news medical contributor and emergency room physician. Lets begin with the president resuming his rallies, after being sick with coronavirus so recently, what concerns you about this . Thank you for having me, fred. I mean, its incredibly concerning. You know, given the information we had about the president s diagnosis and the specifics about the kroecourse that he wa given, he likely hadcy severe course of covid19 so at a minimum he would need 10 to 20 days of isolation. To have him out at rallies, not Wearing Masks in large groups is incredibly irresponsible and reckless. And really not role modeling the appropriate Public Health preventive measures we know actually work. And i was going to ask you, you know, how undermining that message will be when from the president of the United States, you know, hes going to go on about business and kind of defy that 10 to 20day isolation that everybody else is getting, how that undermines the messaging that you as a doctor are trying to convey to your patients and to your fellow, you know, medical cohorts and the messages theyre trying to convey. Its exactly. I was hoping many of us were hoping this would be a lesson that he would learn, that this would be, you know, a diagnosis that he would take seriously. But, you know, he was able to receive world class care, an assortment of medications, both approved and experimental, that probably no other patient in the country has received at such an early course in his disease. And so he seems to be doing very well. The same could not be said of, you know, the over 200,000 americans who have already died from this virus and who dont have the same level of access to care and medications that he has. So, again, incredibly irresponsible of him sending this message but the experience has also made him more invincible to the virus. Then this grim prediction coming from the excdc chief dr. Frieden that another 20,000 people will die of covid by the end of this month. So, what can we all be doing, you know, to, perhaps, defy those numbers, bring them down . Right. As you mentioned a little earlier, were seeing 43 states with uncontrolled spread of the virus. Were seeing daily cases that havent been this high since the summer. And were also seeing an increase in hospitalizations. So, we know this is not about an increase in testing. What we need is what weve always needed. We need a national strategy. We need a National Mask mandate. We also need to ensure people are physically distancing, avoiding indoors and large gatherings. All the things we know actually work. And i was hoping that this experience for our president would be an opportunity for him to sort of pivot. Unfortunately, we know were not seeing that. So, i think the state and local governments are going to have to pick up the slack and put and enforce some of those measures we know actually work. So, on our cnn coronavirus town hall last night, at one of the cdcs former acting directors dr. Besser told sanjay gupta and Anderson Cooper he feels the cdcs integrity has been compromised by politics. As a physician, are you in a position now where youre starting to, you know, second guess information coming out of the cdc or do you still have confidence in it . Yeah. Absolutely. Its so demoralizing. There are so many wonderful career professionals that have dedicated their lives to working in the cdc. And, you know, even when i give presentations now and i quote data from the cdc, i kind of like shutter a little bit. Weve seen a pattern of interference in the agency from School Reopenings to churches to this mask mandate on commercial transportation. And so, you know, i think that what i would love to see is for the leadership, for dr. Redfield, to really stand up. And i think were seeing him play an incredibly passive role in this situation. And, you know, we need to really see some pride and, you know, some show of strength and confidence from the cdc because right now were not seeing that. And, you know, its really undermining its credibility. All right. We shall see. Dr. Blackstock, always good to see you. Thanks so much. Thank you, fred. Take care. Be withell. Because while this election may feel different, we all call america home. South Carolina Republican senator Lindsey Graham is in a tight race for reelection and hes facing criticism for something he he said during a Campaign Event with his democratic challenger Jaime Harrison, who is black. Heres what graham said as part of an answer to a question about civil unrest over racial injustice. My opponents employing to lose, not because of race but because hes aligned with the most liberal people in the country. You can be an africanamerican and go to the senate, you just have to share the values of our state. I care about everybody. If youre a young africanamerican, an immigrant, you can go anywhere in this state, you just need to be conservative, not liberal. Meanwhile, Jaime Harrison has just set a fundraising record. Grahams challenger raised 57 million in the final quarter of the campaign. Thats more than any Senate Candidate has ever raised in a quarter. And the race is incredibly close. The latest polling by Quinnipiac University shows the candidates tied. Cnns manu raju has a closer look at the race and how grahams relationship with donald trump may be helping him and hurting him. Reporter hes gone from outspoken trump critic to a staunch trump defender. Thank you for being the best commander in chief. Reporter now Lindsey Graham is battling to keep his senate seat in South Carolina and trying to convince voters he should be rewarded for his loyalty to the president. Heres what i want to tell all the liberals talking about South Carolina. Were going to kick your ass. Reporter despite attacking trump five years ago hes a racebaiting, xenophobic, religious bigot. Reporter he now says this. Were a team. Reporter graham is betting his vigorous support of Amy Coney Barretts by months end will win over voters in this conservative state, despite what he said in the past. Ive been helping trump and i apparently pissed every liberal in the country off but well be fine. Reporter but graham is deluged by political ads making him among the most endangered democrats. Democrat Jaime Harrison, a former congressional aide, state party chair and lobbyist is raising a Staggering Amount of money and bombarding the air waves with ads like this one. Politicians who have been in washington so long. Reporter harrison has already spent 40 million in advertising compared to roughly 14 midatlantllion by graham. Harrison has let his ads do the talking, speaking sparingly to the media. They have been blitzing us with ads backtoback. Have you seen a lot of Jaime Harrison ads . Not much other than on the internet. Reporter as father of two young sons and prediabetic, harrison has been cautious in the age of coronavirus, even insisting a large plexiglass be placed side him during saturdays debate. Harrison says his schedule has been packed but his aides would not provide a list of virtual events. Do you have a quick minute to talk before the debate . No. Reporter weve been trying to talk to you. Your campaign hasnt been responding to our questions. Mr. Harrison, do you have a quick second to talk about the debate . Any questions for cnn . Reporter after the debate, harrison attacked graham over his repeated propss in 2016 and 2018 not to advance a Supreme Court pick during an election years. You can use my words against me. You have taken an oath. Stand. And say, i changed my mind. Reporter graham was unapologetic about his reversal. Amy Coney Barrett will be a buffer to liberalism. If you want conservative judges, im your only bet in this race. Reporter that shift may cost this voter in myrtle beach. I kind of liked him until he flipflopped on the Supreme Court thing. And that kind of turned me off. Reporter but graham thinks most voters will reward him in his quest to keep the court and the senate conservative. Do you worry voters may have lost trust in you . No. I think they can trust me to be fair. Reporter during my interview, i asked him if he had any concerns about the president s handling of coronavirus, if the president should not have downplayed the virus . Graham said the president was right not to create a panic or say the country was, quote, going to blow up. I asked him what about having packed rallies, for instance, crowded White House Events . He sidestepped that question but ultimately said that this virus came from china not from trump tower. Thank you so much. And right now he is being held under investigation for firstdegree murder, fred. Natasha, help us understand the nature of these protests . Reporter yeah. Before this happened, in fact, police and the witnesses were describing this as two opposing protests, two opposing groups with high emotions, but Law Enforcement had done a lot of work to try to keep the two groups separate in that area. In fact, Denver Police said they had the assistance of three local sheriffs departments and that for the most part, they were kept apart for the day. And when this happened, this is actually when the groups were dispersing, so the protests were ending at this point when the gunshot was fired. Natasha chan, thank you so much. Joining us now is cnn contributor Susan Anderson brower and also the author of grace and power americas first ladies. Good to see you. I think everyone is enamored by stories of jackie kennedy. Sadly, you know, you cant forget those images. She was by her husbands side when jfk was shot. She almost immediately set about planning a monday you mejs funeral for her husband and planning away to cement his time in the white house and camelot. How instrumental was she, cementing his legacy . Its amazing she had the foresight and wherewithal after seeing him killed right in front of her to immediately call, even from air force one on the way back to washington, she called from the plane, she talked to white house curators about how this funeral had to be just like abraham lincolns. And then a week after kennedys funeral, she famously talked to Theodore White of life magazine and created this whole camelot story, which cemented his legacy for future generations forever. As you say, they were in the white house for such a brief time. She was only 31 years old. I was going to say, she was only 30something. To have the wherewithal to handle all that and even that decision she would make of like, i am not taking off this suit, you know, splattered with blood because America Needs to see what happened. I mean, thats a powerful, huge decisions. One of the last things she did in the white house is actually writing a letter to soviet leader and encourages him to continue the Nuclear Disarmament talks he and kennedy had begun. That also, you know, makes it clear that she was a diplomat and she was so incredibly brilliant and she had a huge appreciation for history. She opened the white house to americans in 1962 when she gave a live walkthrough where she talked about the historical artifacts in the white house. She helped restore the white house. She was an incredibly iconic first lady. I think its important we celebrate and recognize her. And i learned things watching the show and being part of it that i didnt know before. Its fascinating. She was so atut not just in the art, photography, fluent in french. There was so much about her thats fascinate. We could talk for a very long time. Were going to watch that special tonight.
