Newsroom. Ill pick up our coverage as we follow this breaking news. Mission to earth complete. Bon behnken and doug hurley are back from the International Space station. This is the first crew misch this is a big moment. Lets listen in. As we watch this, i want to bring in c business and innovation, rachel crain. And so, rachel, this has been a moment weve all been watching the past hour or sore since the splashdown. And here we go. The capsule is open. They so close from being back officially on american soil. Thats right. Weve been waiting for this moment since launch, i have to say. This is a moment that spacex, nasa and enthusiasts around the world having waiting for, that this mission was success. It loose as though the splashdown has gone without a hitch. Now, what you are seeing right now, thinks completely normal. The Flight Surgeon was expected to interinto the captionle to check they were going to have stretchers on board the boat, and on hans as they exit. Being in space forhs its prettr body as a water landing. A lot of people have a heart time, even with a land landing. You know, they have to really truly have their say sea legs, and times its quite different. Nobody more so than their young boys and that i wives, knowing that the mission has been successful and theyre back on earth. Miles obrien, you have been with us the past hour or so and the final moments of their journey. We heard them say it was essential a 19hour journey back to earth from the International Space station. Now bob and doug are about to exit. How long does the does it take for the doctor to hard to predict. Im sure thougher doing fine. This was a docile splashdown in a very careful gulf of mexico, and theyre test pilots, theyre tough, right . I suspect theyre going to take their time. Everything is part of a test regime. Theyre gathering date wherever they go. Again, these are the things they want to put in the database so that when they fly again, theyre a little smarter. We saw the preparation of stretchers. What should we read into that . Theres part of that. Stretchers, wheelchairs, if they want to walk off on their own steam, theyre certainly allowed to. Theyve been in zerog weightlessness for two months, so their inner ear is very confused. Every astronaut has their own personal reaction. Some are not affected by it much, just like some of us guess more carsick. Seeing a stretcher there should not be implied as any more than a precaution. If nothing else, we dont want them stumbling on a ship as it rolls a bit in the gulf of mexico. Rachel, they spent 63 days, initially departed earth may 30th. They arrived on may 31st. I know youve been in contact with them while theyve been in space. What were they anticipating about their return. Well, you know, itsic a very busy mission. Even before todays return, you know, bob behnken has done four space walks. Bob and doug together have done over a hundred space they also does a habitability test with fellow decree members, specrew members, to inform future crew mission of what the space capsule is like when you have four people is inside. Eating, dressing, undressing, all those things, because, of course, they had it rather spaciously. It was just the two of them, but in terms of todays splashdown, i had the opportunity to ask them, were they nervous about it. A lot of people say reentry is perhaps the most dangerous part of the mission, in large because theres a sixminute blackout period when the space caps also is using the atmoss sphephere. They have no communication with the astronauts for that sixminute period. So its quite hairoing. Despite the fact they have guinea pigs here, no crew had felony in crew dragon before, had never splashed down in crew dragon. They had they wove nervous at all, also, you know so they have that strong sorry, go ahead, ana. I just was noticing, we are seeing one of the astronauts who appears to be in a position to be off the capsule right now. I just overheard the narrator here, saying that they saw a thumbs up. They believe things are going well as far as this reentry. Do you know what we are looking at right now. Apologies. I didnt see that moment happen. Im a bit delayed. Im working from home makes it a little more difficult. I think what we saw was one of the astronauts exit out onto the stretcher. Which is a great things. If we saw the thumbsup, that was what we were expecting. At least one of the astronauts right now is in good spirits. Unclear if it was bob or doug exiting the vehicle, but we can expect shortly for the remaining astronaut, whether its bob or doug in the caps iule. This is what we exactly expected. Using the stretcher is no indication that there is anything wrong here. They really need to get their sea legs, and its not always easy to walk postlarneding. They had the wheelchairs and stretcher on hand, because they had a feeling, you know, from history this often happens with astronauts. They need some assistance exiting the spaceship. Miles, what is going to happen with this capsule . The capsule will be refurbished. It is slated to fly the First Quarter of 2021, the second official manned mission, piloted mission to the International Space station by spacex. This is considered a test flight. The First Official one will be in september, and this is the first slated to supply around april. A big part of spacexs philosophy is to radio use as much as possible. You dont have to be a Rocket Scientist to understand that that makes things cheaper ultimately if youre not throwing things away. What we are seeing is moments ago as the snault emerged. Miles, describe what were seeing. Theyre moving a little slowly, availing themselves of the stretcher, when youre talking about an inner ear thats used to zero gravity for two months and has endured the wild ride from space all the way down to the landon spot in the gulf of mexico. The worst thing you would want to see is watch them stem bling. Theyll be checked out to make sure theyre heal aale and hard. And theyll pick up a flight to ellington, where they will be reunited with their families. Famously they have a stuffed dinosaur, ana, which their two you boys they brought along the dinosaur, tremor. When they woke up, it was the cutest wakeup call ever to hear those two also boys saying, daddy, youve got to wake up. Not a dry eye. It will be interesting to follow the custody ballots over tremor. I can only imagine how excited their families are. Yet, rachel, its such an interesting time. Beyond the history of this moments for nasa, and for these two men, these two astronauts specifically, its a historic time for america right now, given the pandemic were experiencing. Obviously they have been away from this virus and Everything Else that may be part of earth at this moment. What does reentry look like . Well, right now theyll make their way to Pensacola Air base, and from there they get on another plane to Johnson Space center. The reuniting with their families will take place. They both have sons, jack atheo. Who were eagerly awaiting their returns of their dads. And in terms of covid19, you know, thats not quite as much of an issue. At first they were worried about contamination on the space station. Thats always been the case with covid or not. Theres alleges a quarantine period for knots to ensure they do not infect anybody on board. So, of course, extra precautions were taken with covid19, so back on ground theyll take the same precautions that we all are to make sure we all stay healthy and safe, but in terms of this capsule in particular, it will be refurbished, but both doug and bob are married to astronauts. Bobs wife is set to take off, if all goes to plan, in the spring of 2021 in this exact same space capsule, so bob is very excited to tell his life all the his tips. I believe were watching the splashdown that happened a little over an hour ago. Tom sedai seder, why here . Weather is critical for a splashdown just as a liftoff. The criteria winds had been to less than ten miles an hour. Thats hard to find any days, but rain chances less than 25 . We all know whats going on with isaias. Wave heights or the slope and degree can be nor more than 7 degrees slope. When you talk about the options that they had, they put a few in the atlantic. All three of them were taken off the table last week obviously as the Tropical Storm became a hurricane. Isaias is within 80 miles of cape canaveral. So all three of those location were taken off the fable. Then a for a off the coast of s are creating strong gusty winds you go up toward the florida panhandle. Both of those were given a caution sign, because the winds were kicking up 18 to 20 miles an hour. That left one location, pensacola. As they have mentioning, the conditions could not have been better. Critical when you think about something fall with gravity a of reentry, with parachutes. At 1 51 p. M. Eastern time. They had to make that trunk separation. It was a go or nogo, and they did have a window, and im so glad it worked out for them. You cant overemphasize how important this. This is the first splashdown since 1975, the first time u. S. Astronauts were launched from the u. S. In almost ten years. It was the first commercial Aerospace Company carrying humans into earths orbit. What do you see as the future . What is next . Well, what is next is promising, isnt it, ana . You know, the nineyear gap, no one wanted that. No one wanted the u. S. To be on the sidelines paying for a seat on the russian soyuz to see to the space station. A series of events occurred to make that happen. Thats a very long story. Here we are after nine years. Its worth the weight. What has been proven here and theyll be going through some details, but the proof is in the splashdown, we have seen the astronauts get off. What has been proven here is a concept thats reliable, it is cheaper, and it is much safer than the Space Shuttle ever was. So what the u. S. Has done is taken an important step for access to space, which is more meaningful, and ultimately more potentially available to other people. It might begin with rich tourists, but maybe more ways that we cant even have imagined yet. I know youve had a chance to speak to the astronauts before and during the mission, how do they view this . They rea really downplayed their role. They were the to get to the station and help out in any way that they can, but really, really just trying to minimize their role here. Even though the rest of us nose its huge having to rely so doug hurlhurley was on the last Space Shuttle mission, he piloted it. I asked about the poetic nature of that. You were in the pilot seed for the end of wen era and also in the cockpit for the dawn of a new one. He downplayed it, saying he was just focused on the mission. What this mission means for the future of space exploration. What a moment. Thank you so much, rachel crain and miles and tom for being with us. Again, a successful return to earth for these veteran astronauts, Robert Behnken and douglas hurley, back on american soil or close to, as they make their ways from the dragon spacspace ics capsule. At coronavirus cases continue to soar across the country, House Speaker nancy pelosi is calling out the response coming from the White House Coronavirus task force, specifically dr. Deborah bi birx. Watch. Madam speaker, politico reported that in a closed meeting on friday, you accused dr. Deborah birx of the task force spreading disinformation about the pandemic. Is that true . And do you have confidence in her . I think the president is spreading disinformation about the virus, and she is his appointee. I dont have confidence there, no. Jeremy diamond joins us at the white house. We heard dr. Birx saying shes seeing some reassuring signs across the country. Reporter lets be clear, she said a bit reassuring and some of the positive signs. She was specifically talking about the west and the south of the country, where you are starting to see the mitigation efforts work, which is the words she used. Talking about a decrease in test positivity rates and cases, hospital seays in states like arizona, for example, but to be clear, the broad picture that dr. Birx painted this morning is concern. Shepped emdemocrat ecis more widespread than in the past. She talked specifically to Rural Communities in the United States, saying you are not immune from this epidemic, making clear this is knott in usu both in urban and rural area. Dana bash asked several times what the federal government got wrong and why are we in a place that other countries are not in. Dr. Birx didnt talk about that. And ad she talked about what specifically this idea of offering more granular guidance to state and local authorities. Listen. I think the federal government reset about five, six weeks ago. Rather than generic federal framework, we have gone to specific state and local city by city, county by county, showing which counties and which cities are under particular threat, and what mitigation has to be done. Reporter now, despite that claim that the federal government reset its approach five to six weeks ago, we should note it was six weeks ago when the Vice President wrote an opinion piece that there was no second wave of case is and the administration had this pandemic under control. The last six weeks we have seen that thats anything but the case. As for criticism from nancy pelosi, who did not voice it publicly, dr. Birx said shall she has tremendous respect for nancy pelosi, and her comments might be due to an article weeks ago and pushed for reopening several months ago. We should note, though, while dr. Birx the New York Times called her pollyannaish, they didnt reach out to her. But the article does not use that terms, and said that they did reach out for comments, but did not guess a response from the white house. Theres now complicating details over the last 24 hours regarding a scaleddown rep national convention. Reporter yesterday i was told that all of the activities would be closed to the press. A republican official familiar with the planning told me no reporters could be allowed on site. As of now, they are expecting that the vote to formally nominate the president as the 2020 republican nominee would be carried on a livestream online. But now the Republican National committees Communications Director is telling me no final decision has been made about press coverage. So it seems amid the backlash theyre facing, that the rnc is reevaluating its plans. They have said it is the government of north carolina, which is led by a democratic governor, that their restrictions they are putting on the rnc in terms of the number of people allowed for the convention is the reason theyre not allowing reports on site. We have scaled back the number of rnc delegates who will be participating in the formal process if no reporters are allowed, that would certainly be unprecedented. Joining mess is dr. Peter hotez. Doctor, dr. Birx says shes seeing some reassuring signs. Do you see any reassuring signs right now . I dont see a lot, ana, to be reassured about. The deaths are now climbing. Were heading up to 1,500 new deaths per day. Thats very concerning. That trajectory means were going to easily maybe 300,000 deaths or more by the end of the year. Its plateaued as 100,000 so, for example in houston, even though its plateaued, what that really means if you multiply it by three or five, thats an 5,000 new cases, because thats the unusual conversion factor. Now the virus is moving up there are areas getting hid very hard. I dont see anything rea thursday. This is the problem. I dont think she doesnt not just her. Its the whole White House Task force, doesnt know how to synthesize and communicate the information very well. Sort of cherry picks they vary yes, sir facts, but doesnt bring it together to make us understand whats going on. Its pretty awful. Problem number two, they stiller digging in their heels that the states have to lead and this he will not organize a federal response. We have the Worst Epidemic in the world right now. Dr. Birx did acknowledge that the virus is more widespread than before. She issued this warning. Public health is called that because it has a public component. We need the public to help us. Even though we go to parties at home even though the bars are closed. If we create interactions, because we know its not safe, because theres multiple people there, you dont have masks on, youre not socially distanceded you can assume its not superspreading individuals, but superspreading events. We need to stop those. We definitely need to take more precautions. So shes blaming public behavior there. Shes putting it on us as individuals to take personal responsibility to do what we can to stop the spread. I didnt hear her spell out any plans coming from the federal government to take action. This is what happens. Shes hivewalfway there. Yes, individuals do have to have some responsibility for their own behavior, but theres also a requirement for leadership at the federal level, to explain to the American People what needs to be done, to give directives to the governor what needs to be done, providing them with the m emepidemiologic models, not just leaving it to the states and the governors to figure it out. Worst of all, dumping it on the teachers trying to make classrooms safe. What gets me really upset is were dumping this on the teachers and asking or forcing them to work in an unsafe situation, in which we know theyll be set up to fail if they open up schools in areas of high transmission. Admiral giroir, the white house testing czar, he was on another program today. He suggested that if every american wore a mask and avoided indoor gatherings and places, that would essential be effect i have been as a shutdown or new stayathome order. Do you agree . On this part i cant completely disagree with the admiral. Ive known bret jury is rory for years, but i cant say hes right, either. Remember, this is unprecedented weve never stopped an epidemic only by the masks. In houston, what we are seeing didr is definitely helping from them skyrocketing from either higher, but also keeping it as a plateau at a very high level. The masks clearly are preventing it from resurging, but whether it will bring it down by itself without any type of stayathome mandate, that one i really havent seen yet. Okay. Dr. Hotez, thank you. Dancing, drinks, no social distancing, seems like prepandemic times . But it wasnt. Well explain. Cool mint chewables. California reported a Record Number of coronavirus deaths yet, with more cases than any other state in the entire country, yet these facts did not stop people from gathering closely for a party that the owner said was set to honor first responders. Our crew spotted dozens of maskless people drinking cocktails, not practices social distancing, posts ultimately led to an internal investigation of the Los Angeles County sheriffs department. Cnns kyung lah was there. First, talk about whatyou aw, what you witnessed when you arrived. Reporter well, it was as if i stepped into a time machine and were transported back to before the pandemic. Thats exactly what this looked like. Now, cnn was alerted to this indoor event inside a bar occurring on friday evening ahead of the event. We were told by the source that 100 to 150 members of Law Enforcement would be gathering indoors this establishment. Not exactly sure what we would see. We went to sassafras saloon in hollywood. Its in the center of hollywood. It was plainly visible from the sidewalk. You could see the lights inside, the music going, people very close proximity to one another, no masks, no social distancing, drinking, having a great time. A man inside the bar did come out and said the same people all work at the same place, they had all been tested. It was all perfectly fine. We spoke with the spokeswoman for the owners of the bar that this had been rented by someone who wanted to honor first responders, but she did not confirm which agency was inside. The los angeles sheriffs department, after some video was floating around, did conduct ago internal investigation and said they could not identify anyone inside as an employees, but a short time ago the l. A. County department of pib health did respond with this statement, saying, quote we are investigating reports of a private indoor party, and remind all businesses that there are no exceptions. This is exactly the situation that puts our entire community at unnecessary risk. Ana . I just cant get over this much an event involving first responders, people who should know better, for one, and two who have been more directly impacted by this pandemic than others. Reporter that was what led to the orange tip to c origino cnn. First responders needs to chip in and operate by the same ground rules, that there cannot be any partying indoors in a bar. Thats why were seeing such a strong statement from the Public Health department, regardless of who you were, you have to abide by these rules if were going to snuff out this pandemic. It was a trump tweet that seven shockwaves through the condition. President trump tweeting with universal mailin voting, not absentee voting, which is good, even though theyre the baste thing 2020 will be a great embarrassment to the usa. Delay the election until people can properly, securely and safely vote. Changing the election date is something the president doesnt have authority to do. The constitution is clear that power lies with congress. On cnns state of the union James Clyburn seg President Trump Wont Leave Office peacefully. I feel this man has taken on strongarm tactics. I feel strongly that he is muss lynn musolini, and putin is hitler. He never had the idea of wanting to peacefully transfer power. I want to bring in timothy snyder, the officer of the road to unfreedom, russia, europe, america, he also wrote on tyranny, his last book, 20 lessons from the last century. Do you share the same concerns . I guess i would put the question a different way. Do we have any reason to believe that mr. Trump would accept the outcome of the elect . The tweet of july 30th was a very clear statement, but he has literally dozens of times before said he wouldnt. There is nothing in his career that indicates he actually likes democracy. In this particular tweet, we have a dangerous mixture, where hes talking about a problem he created himself, insofar as we do have problems with voting in the u. S. They have do with things like africanamericans not being enfranchise, they have to do with the things of foreign intervention. Even the problems he mentioned, which is postal voting, which is good and of itself, it might be slowed down because of his own postmaster general. Hes talking about problems he caused himself, then claiming theyre an emergency, and using that as a reason to claim power himself. Thats in fact a prime historical fascist tactic. I have to agree with the judgment. So on that note about fascism, hes been hit all over, from all sides about this tweet, suggesting the election be delayed, even the cofounder of the cob conservative up society wrote this until recently i had taken the democrats assertion that President Trump is a fascist. This latest tweet is fascistic, itself grounds for the immediate impeachment again by the house of representatives and his remove from office by the senate. You have dedicated your research and writings in this area. He says the tweet fits all eight rules for fascist propaganda . Some of it what i just explained is a fascist will manufacture a crisis, blame that crisis on the other side, and then use the crisis, which is his own creation to justify an exception, a claim to power. Mr. Trump has just done that. Another element of this, which is worth paying attention to is the way the tweet ends. People can console themselves by saying mr. Cant himself cancel the election. Thats true, but what he is doing, as of july 30th, is calling upon others to create a mess, so that the election wont go through smoothly. Thats what the three question marks at the end mean. He cant do it himself, but as of july 30th, if you support mr. Trump, if youre planning on voting for mr. Trump, if you contribute to the campaign, if youre a delegate, you know perfectly well, this is a man who doesnt believe he can win by the normal vote count. You know you are taking part now in a campaign which is no longer a democratic campaign, but which is something else. You know that his main task for you now is not to win an election. Hes basically conceded defeat already. His main task for you now is to find someone who who can mess up the election so we can cling to power. Thats a big moral question where a lot of americans should be thinking about the choices theyre about to make. Speaking with the rule of election a voting in americas system, i want you to listen to what president obama said this week during hi eulogy at the funeral of the late congressman john lewis. Once we passed the john lewis Voting Rights act, we should keep marching, to make it even better. By making sure every american is automatically registered to vote, including former inmates who have earned their second chance. [ applause ]. By adding polling places, expanding early voting. If all this takes eliminating the filibuster, another jim crow relic, in order to secure the godgiven rights of every american, then thats what we should do. Tim, would eliminating the filibuster over this Voting Rights issue, essential allows legislation to be passed without bipartisan support, would that strengthen or weaking americas democracy . I think we should take all things that mr. Obama proposed together. Sad to say, we live in a very restricted form of democracy, where money playing too great a role. Its too hard for too many people to vote too much of the time, and where these restrictions are systematically built in. Of course we should be in a country where were encouraged to vote, where its easy to vote, where both Political Parties take it for granted we all ought to be voting, so the two policies can kuo compete on policies and idea instead of competing to try to keep people away from the elections or having the president of the United States claiming we shouldnt be holding elections. That package would make us a much more democratic country. Democracy is not about fundamentally about the parties or partisanship or bipartisanship. Democrat sick is fundamentally about representation. Anything we can do that make it easier for the American People to vote will lead to a better democracy, and also to sounder policy that will close the distance between washington and everyone else, which we all feel. How consequential is this years election . I dont think it could be any more consequential. A lot of the problems that we face, of course, precede mr. Trump, but mr. Trump has the talent of focusing every previous problem, sharpening it, bringing it before our eyes, and giving us the choice. Do we want things to get much worse . Do we want to follow the deems of American History . Or do we prefer to take a small step and start to make things better . Mr. Trump leaves office wont make the whole country better, but mr. Trump leave office will make it possible that americans will feel more represented and give us a chaens to start calling ourselves with truth and pride a democracy. In my view, it could hardly be more consequential. Thank you for taking the time. I always learn from you. He has a new book coming out soon. Looking forward to that. Thanks, tim. We have some breaking news. We have just learned the quarterback for the jacksonville jaguar, Gardner Minshew has been placed on the reserve list.
