Thank you for joining me. We begin this hour with a grim new number from a state that is fast becoming the epicenter of the u. S. Coronavirus pandemic. Florida reporting nearly 10,000 additional cases today. Thats on top of yesterdays dramatic numbers, which set a singleday for all states with more than 11,400 new infections. Then theres arizona and texas see cases surge. But despite all the evidence, President Trump is downplaying concerns. He used a fourth of july address in washington, d. C. To say 99 of all coronavirus cases are, im quoting now, totally harmless, a factually incorrect team. Statement. Boris is live in miami beach for us. Reporter staggering numbers, in the last 24 hours just shy of 10,000 new covid19 cases. That means for the first four days of july, florida has tallied more than 40,000 case cass. I want to paint a picture of what we are seeing behind me. This is the Miami Beach Convention center. Just a short time ago, they closed testing for walkups. If you were joining us earlier there were a line of people walking here getting tested, now its only open to vehicles. It appears that thats that may actually be changing as we speak. They may have run out of the allotted tests for the vehicles, but this line ran around the block. Its easy to get tested. I did it a few hours ago. All you had to have was a government i. D. , a person heavily in ppe, a swab, a moment of discomfort. In about two or three days, im supposed to get the results from that test back. The other concern here in florida is not just testing and the rate of infection, which is at over 15 . Its also the rate of hospitalization. The mayor earlier today was on cnn. Our census has now double in the last 14 days. And you go to the intensive care. Thats us doubled. We have 150 people on ventilators now. I think two weeks ago it was 64. All these things they talk about lagging are catching up. Of course, the problem is you cant wait until that problem is in front of you, because this thing bakes into the Community Two weeks before you see it. So you cant just sit back and wait for it to happen. Probably really frustrating for folks waiting in line. Earlier, i heard from one of the Armed Services folks who was a lot of these folks probably frustrated, but theyre doing testing every day from 9 00 a. M. To 5 00 p. M. Fred . Thank you very much, boris. Appreciate that. Arizona is also seeing a huge increase in the number of new cases per week. Per capita cases are rising faster there than any other state, but some mayors are now criticizing the states decision to begin reopening in early may. We opened way too early in arizona. We were one of the last states to go to stayathome, and one of the first to reemerge. We reemerged as zero to 60. We had nightclubs handing out free champagne, no masks. Cnn is at saguaro lake . Is it. Reporter like the cactus. Tell me, how seriously are people taking the coronavirus . Reporter its a beautiful day. Its extremely hot, because its arizona, but its a nice day. The lake is very popular today. The parking lot behind me is completely full. Theres a restaurant there serving all day. You can eat inside in arizona despite the rising numbers. 90 capacity in icu bets has been ha steady number. In the marina, theres a lot of boats here. People are out and about in the water, which of course is fine if youre distanced from each other. Its not so much the concern being on the water that people are worried about. Its the cities and other packed areas wheres theres not that many social distancing rules. The mayor of a nearby city spoke about the trouble with testing in her city. We are in a crisis related to testing. I was in a testing facility, people still waiting eight hours. Its really, really difficult. Im spending time begging everyone from walgreens to open testing, outofstate testing to come in. Its awful to see people waiting in a car while youre feeling sick. People were running out of gas. Reporter so i have to say it was he remark talking about the testing in florida, because its the same story in phoenix. We were at a testing side the other day, and people had 1,000 available testing slots a day, and they would close within seven minutes of the phone lines coming open. Its it seems like its consistent request what you just heard from boris, too. Not enough tests consistent with the interest in getting the tests. Evan, lets talk about texas. In texas we have heard from a variety of medical officials, political leaders, who have said the line of people trying to get tests have also been around the blocks. Sometimes they just simply run out. So what can you tell us about the surge of cases in texas . Well, as you noted, arizona is leading the nation in per capita new cases. States are now compete fog that dark title. We heard a Harris County executive say this morning hospitals in houston, and 33 other cities are now at that surge capacity. Its fascinating. Weve been speaking about this for months now, and there we hearty the stories of the epidemic. Thats the same story being told here and in texas. Surgeon numbe surge numbers, testi ining bein problem. New york was a problem for some time, and now according to experts theres four epicentes s on the way here. Lets talk about georgia. Overnight a childrens camp has closed after at least 30 campers and Staff Members tested positive. The ymca camp said it first learned on june 24th that one of its counselor contracted the virus. That counselor was immediately sent home and parents were notified. Since that first positive test of that camp leader, now other campers and cam staff have tested positive. At least 30 cases were confirmed. Dr. Carlos del rio is here with us. Good to see you, doctor. We dont know all the ages of the kids or even their conditions, just that there were positive tests. We do know the campers range of age, and what does that tell you about the several of the cases or even the changes. Think it says two things, young people are get infected. Theyre not as immune as we originally thought, but we also know theyre less likely to get sick. That doesnt mean they cant get sick. And you may see a lot of young people being infected and not having a lot of disease, but the problem is those young people go home and may infect the home, their parents or grandparents, or somebody with a chronic condition that ends up in the hospital. The most recent example here, the Camp Counselor gets it, and then under two weeks later, you know, positive tests are coming from other people so this comes as we also just learned 121 students at the university of washington have tested positive. On top of that, more than 750 too of and faculty members at Georgia Tech University are raising the alarm about the potentially dangers of inperson classes in the fall. What are your concerns . How do you allay fears out there . Well, i mean, i think theres no way to totally allay fierce. I think we should try to do some activities and we just simply cannot continue to be sheltering in place, but we also have to do it with face masks, with social distancing, we have to do it, you know, theres no point of saying were going to go back to classrooms, but ware face masks, and then students in the evenings go to bars or restaurants, and then they get infected. We need to change the culture and need to recognize the enemy is out there. The virus is there all the time and when were in crowded places, in enclosed places, were more likely to get infected. Doctor, youre here in atlanta. More than 1400 Health Care Workers signed a letter addressed to governor kemp, asking him to increase restrictions in the state. You signed this letter. What is it youre asking the governor to do . Well, you know, as healthcare workers, we very concerned, and we as healthcare workers are very concerned. And well bet in the case that new york was. We think that again, tough political decisions are needed at this time. This is not normal circumstances. Without the courage to take the strong moves, were not going to get away from this infection. We know very clearly that encouraging people to wear face masks is not going to make them do it. You have to create mandates and requirements, and in my mind, maybe you dont do it for the entire state, but certain cities, like here in atlanta, you have to do it. So were asking the governor to give the mayors the ability to makes decisions. Its a dishonor to step up and do what i think may be considered difficult, but this is a time for difficult decisions. Were not at a place where we can say this is normal times. Well, doctor, the president is saying everything is all right. Listen to what he had to say at the white house. Now we have tested almost 40 million people. By so doing, we show cases, 99 of which are totally harmless. Okay. So how potentially take russ do you think a sentiment like that is . I think its unfortunate, because it is not that 99 are harmless. Elle probably about 75 to 80 are mild. That doesnt mean theyre harmless. Theres about 15 to 20 that are dangerous. And about 3 to 5 end up in the icu, and maybe about a smaller percent die. I any its irresponsible and inappropriate. If i had a relative who died, i would not be happy today the was asked to comment about the president s this is what he had to say. So im not going into whos right and whos wrong. The what im going to say is what ive had said before. This is a serious case, we must do something to stem the tide. We have the power to do it. You wallcalled the president words irresponsibility. Does this exemplify irresponsible, too . His president is the boss is he flatout wrong . The fda commissioner is right. This is a serious illness. I think hes in a tough position. What hes saying is absolutely right, this is a serious disease. Doctor, well leave it there. Thank you very much. Thanks for being with you. Reporter the dreaded sound of an emergency seemed to be the only sound filling the air in new york city for far too long. The beginning of this whole pandemic was very, very hectic. It was crazy. It was the craziest of my career. Reporter while hospitals were packed with coronavirus patients here, they were also losing staggering amounts of money. We have hit the hospitals to about the tune of 1. 6 billion. Its been roughly between 300 and 400 million a month that we have been losing. Reporter from the largest Health Care System in new york that has treated more than 40,000 covid patients, to the seattle suburbs where the first known outbreak hit in late february. I have no idea what youre life will look like. Harder life . Yeah. Yeah. Different. Harder. Reporter it seem counterintuitive that during a pandemic hospitals would lose money. The reason for that is twofold. One is we canceled most of the other services, including most surgery, to be able to accommodate covid patients. Reporter the other reasons, they say they generally lose money, because it requires mounds of personal protection equipment, its staff intensive and requires the need to retrofit everyone. We live on thin margins in the world of health care. For Something Like this, its apocalyptic in terms of what it means. Healthcare experts are saying Mass Gatherings and celebrations this weekend could produce higher spikes. Polo sandoval joins us from new york. What are you learning there . Reporter as americans gathered this fourth of july, there are multiple incidents in multiple states that are getting at least a closer look. Theres some images that have been circulating in wisconsin. Noahs water park. The management at this location telling cnn that they actually were very cautious about reopening once given the green light to proceed. That includes temperature checks for not just guests, but obviously the employees as well. Requires masks and closing some attractions, soo there are many locations that did in fact try to minimize the risk there, especially since the state gave hem the green light to operate. Of course theyre on a very busy weekend. But in missouri, in lake of the oczars, at least two images showing people together. Theres no statewide requirement there for people to wear masks. I do want to show the pictures out of a socalled Sandbar Party in one lake in southwest michigan. Partygoers appear to be clustered together. One of the residents nearby say this is a party organized by residence for residents here, its gone on for decades. These kinds of party that go on. Weve also heard from authorities there, local Health Officials say they were aware of this since it tends to happen of year. That Health Officials telling cnn they spoke to the organizer of the party, but that county officials do not have jurisdictioning over gatherings in public areas. So its a very different situation. Though these can try to education, they cannot require it. Its still too soon to say if any of they incidents have contributed to the spread. That may come later, but these are the kind of pictures Health Officials does not want to see this fourth of july, but certainly does not keep people from gathering in public, as long as they exercise precaution precautions. Thats what were seeing here. Most folks staying six feet apart, most folks wearing masks, and if not they are handing them out. Were in florida. On saturday california reported 2300 cases, a lot lower than mondays records of 8100. Paul vercammen joins us. In a rare july session, tomorrow the court is expected to hand down new rulings on everything from president ial powers to religious liberty. What are the cases were expecting to hear involving President Trump . Reporter under norm at circumstances, fred, this terms would already be over, but because of covid the court is delayed. The justices are still writing. We think next week will be the last week of the term. Thats still an open question. There are eight cases that remained. As you said, two of the most important cases have to do with President Trumps bid to shield his financial documents. Both of these cases have to do with the financial documents, but there are actually two separate legal questions. One case is brought by house democrats. Theyre investigating the president for his financial disclosures, his relationship with foreign actor, and some of his lending practices, and they sent a subpoena to his accounting form and his personal banks. He said this is a harassment, an Illegal Fishing expedition and these subpoenas shouldnt go out. The other has to do with a new york prosecutor. How to care for their patients without putting their own lives at risks. Thats where the robots are coming in to help. At the university of maryland, one physician, dr. Neil reynolds has set up a robotic telehealth program. The dr. Reynolds is joining mess right now. Good to see you, dr. Reynolds. First, tell us how effective this is. Well, its one of the best face masks you can ever have. My face mask is about 22 miles thick. Anyway, this absolutely keeps me, a person at high risk because of my age, away from the patients. It allows people who dont want to get near the patient to do so and do so safely. We dont have a lot of statistics yet about people turning positive or not turning positive but no question reducing your exposure would tell us house this works, dr. Reynolds. Most everything has become family. Youre tacking about your dr. Visa your facetime or phone, about you with this kind of robotic configuration, were looking at this in the hospital. So this means youre in the hospital, youre in a medical facilities getting care, and you might get a visit from a robotic doctor like that, right . On the other ha on the other end is the human doctor . Thats exactly correct. Normally we walk in the room, shake the patients hands, whatever, we introduce ourselves. Now i roll into the room. I look kind of human noticed. Im about the same height, 55 tall, a face that looks like a computer, and we talk real time. So it really very much simulates normal patient care. Patients reat to this immediately. We september it and we just move right on. Thats cool. How many of these are there . Is this just the beginning . Telehealth has been around for a long time. We just started having it at the university of Maryland Medical Center around april of this year. These are all over the world. Whats new is the driver for this in the sense of now were trying to protect the healthcare worker. Usually what were trying to do is reduce the barriers of distance and time with telehealth. Now were thinking totally different. How do we protect ourselves and still deliver good patient care . So maybe at the beginning, the advent was about efficiency, and now its about safety for both the patient and healthcare providers. Absolutely. Thank you so much and thanks for introducing so many of us to something very new. My pleasure. Im fredricka whitfield. Thank you for joining me today. Newsroom continues right after this. Hello.
