President obama says america has lost a patriot and humble servant. Former president bill clinton who defeated george h. W. Bush said few americans have been or ever will be able to match president bushs record of service to the United States. To those close to him, his most Important Role as a husband and as a father and a grandfather. Give me some words to describe your father. My dad is just the kindest person. Hes been an extraordinary role model. I cant its hard for me to be objective. I believe hes as close to perfection as any person. If everybody was like him in trying to find the best in others, the world would be a way better place than it is today. You said he inspired you. How so . Well, throughout my life, an amazing man, whos absolutely selfless. It inspires me to teach in inner City High School after college. He inspired me to think about Public Service. We had gone to the inaugural parade. I wanted to see what it was like to go into the oval office. Dad walks in. I said, welcome, mr. President. He said, thank you, mr. President. What would you like people to remember and know about him as a person . If this gentle soul could remain a gentle person. Hes a wartime president who conducted himself with great honor, earned the respect of the troops, could get along with people from the other party. Yet he never put his own selfinterest ahead of america. That quiet dignity. Our special correspondent join us. You see the interviews with members of the bush family. That is what they say about their dad, quiet leadership, dignity, grace, kindness, on this sad day, what do we know the bush familys going through . A true role model. To have three sons speak about you that way tells you everything you need to know about the man in addition to what we saw in public. Obviously, this is very hard day for them. They know it was coming. Because of his health. But its always a shock when you finally get there. I think we have some more tape. You know, theres endless fascination about father and son. Each of them used to say to me, dont ask me about the relationship. We dont do psychobabble in this family. But we had an opportunity to talk to president george w. Bush, 43, about his father. Give me some words to describe your father. Humble. Driven. Competitive. Willing to listen to the other person. Great listener. Thoughtful. And a person who cared deeply about others who hurt. One of the very dramatic moments for me came on september 14th at the National Cathedral. Very fearful of bursting out in tears and the country didnt need to see a weeping president. Finish the speech, went back to the pew and sat down. I felt his hand reach a cross laura and grab my arm. Just a small gesture but it meant a lot to me. It was a very sweet moment of fatherly love. You know, very sensitive people would say to 43, does your father give you advice . He said, only when i ask for it. We talked about that because i asked him what his favorite moment was. Was there a picture . And that moment after 9 11 in the National Cathedral where he just touched his hand tells you everything you need to know. I remember that moment. Those horrible trying days for the country. George w. Bush owned a baseball team. Showed his competitiveness. It was a visceral thing for w. For h. W. , you didnt see it, but it was just as fierce, the competitiveness. Was he humble . Was he a gentleman . Was he classy . Yes. But you dont get to be president without being competitive and without being ambitious but he didnt wear it on his sleeve. As his mother would say, dont be a braggadocious. Those were the words he lived by. You know where you saw it outwardly in sports. Dont beat him at tennis, you know, golf. He was absolutely driven and competitive. I was checking in on his health back just a couple months ago. His longtime spokesman told me hes looking forward to his Houston Astros beating my boston red sox. He was always competitive about his sports teams. Thank you so much. Great reporting. George h. W. Bushs political career spanned four decades. His campaigns often turned ugly. Howd he change politics . A look back, george h. W. Bush, the politician. It was the defining promise of his president ial campaign. Read my lips, no new taxes. [ cheers ] just two years later, he broke it. Knowing it would perhaps cost him his job. Our nation is standing together against saddam husseins aggression. Here at home, theres another threat. A cancer gnawing away at our nations health. Reporter president bush was convinced he had to raise taxes to put the country ahead of his own political standing, agreeing to a compromise that included about 3 in cuts for every dollar in new taxes. Theres a time you have to make tough decisions, give a little to get what is best for the country. If you do the math, you dont get the clinton era balanced budgets without the bush era tax compromise. The bush team believes that broken promise was a big reason he lost. George bush had many stops on his path to the presidency. He was the last world war ii veteran to win the white house. He served a couple terms in congress. Lost a couple of u. S. Senate races. And was Republican Party chairman during the Wilderness Years of watergate. He decided to challenge jimmy carter in 1980 but an incumbent president was not his biggest problem. Pay for this reporter despite winning the iowa caucuses, bush couldnt sustain what he called the big mo, as in momentum. He lost the nomination to reagan. When reagan couldnt convince gerald ford to join the ticket, he turned to bush who accepted. A third place finish behind bob dole and Pat Robertson in iowa nearly derailed bushs 98 campaign. Bush was 17 points behind the democratic nominee michael dukakis. Three months ago, i remember some of the great publications in this country had written me off. Reporter attacking duke as too liberal. First degree murderers not eligible for parole. Reporter the strategy worked. In the end, dukakis lost and bush was president. President bush was popular after the 1991 gulf war. By 1992, voters were impatient with a president who at times seemed out of touch with their concerns. How has the National Debt personally affected each of your lives . If the question are you suggesting that if somebody has means, that the National Debt doesnt affect them . What im saying im not sure i get it. Help me with the question and im try to answer it. Then a third party challenge. A young democrat with the best political skills of his generation wherever the seeds of could look the audience in the eyes and feel the pain. George bush will be remembered more kindly than the voters treated him in 1992. Tributes tip to pour in for former president george h. W. Bush, the late 41st president died last night here in houston at the age of 94 and he passed away after several months of declining health. Bush and his family had deep connections to the state of maine. He was a lifelong seasonal resident of the famous kennebunkport where he would spend time boating and golfing and a lot of quality time with his family. Joining me now is the republican senator from the great state of maine, Susan Collins. Senator, thank you so much for joining me now. Lets just talk about his relationship to maine and how you experience that. I think we have some photos of the two of you on that iconic walker point with all the rocks behind you, there you go, with the compound behind them as well. Talk to us about what maine meant to him. Maine meant so much to president bush. I firmly believe that he was determined to get to maine this summer after barbara bush had passed away a few months earlier. And i know that his doctors were not real keen on his traveling. But he had to get back to his beloved state of maine. I believe that hes been to every summer of his life in maine except when he was serving our country in world war ii. That is indicative of how much the state and its people meant to him. And senator, as i hear you talk, thinking about the fact that you, now, are a rare breed. You are a new england republican, moderate republican. Youre george h. W. Bush republican. I am here in houston. He served here in houston. Lived here in houston. His heart and dna was new england moderate. What is it like marking his passing and perhaps the passing of that part of the party with the exception of you . Well, there are more of us left than may seem. I think charlie baker, the governor of massachusetts. But theres no doubt that president bush was a real role model to me and to many other women in Public Service. First of all, he always did what he thought was right regardless of the political consequences. He worked across the aisle. He became friends with president clinton despite having been beaten by president clinton. He was always one who reached out, whether it was to other countries or to democrats when it was in the interest of good Public Policy and in americas interest for him to do so. He was one of the kindest most thoughtful people i have ever met in my life. Every single year, he invited me to visit with him and mrs. Bush at Walkers Point in kennebunkport and, indeed, i saw him this year just a little over two months ago in september. Through what i had a feeling would sadly be our last visit. But even with his declining health, he had this zest for life and this passionate interest in what was going on. And he was always so kind and loved having visitors. I was just so honored that i had that opportunity to spend that hour with him as he would occasionally, despite his decreased mobility, look at over the beloved ocean and the waves crashing on the rocks at Walkers Point. And he liked gossip. Hes not alone in politicians wanting to learn the inside scoop of whats really going on in washington, particularly those who have been in the bubble like the presidency. Did he get the real scoop from you . He did like to get the inside scoop. I think that is a quality that probably almost everyone whos in public life shares. He did relish knowing what was going on. He would ask specific people. He just enjoyed the stories of washington. He lived such an interesting life. I think a lot of times, and i love the retrospective that youre doing, but a lot of us need to be reminded that his career included not just eight years as Vice President and a term as president of our great city, but also that he was a special envoy to china. He was director of the cia. He was a member of the house of representatives. He truly dedicated his life to Public Service. And hes a great role model to those of us serving today and those who serve in the future. And a couple of seconds we have left before the break, tell us something that he said to you with regard to advice that you have taken with you. To do it in your heart you know is right. I met president and mrs. Bush in 1994 when i was running for governor. They invited me to lunch at their home in kennebunkport. You can imagine how excited and thrilled i was. That evolved into a friendship over the next decade. I would almost always make an annual trip down to kennebunkport to see them. And was so honored that they considered me a friend. He really leaves such a legacy of service. And its one that inspired all of us. Senator Susan Collins of maine, thank you so much for your thoughts this morning. Thank you. And thank you. We just learned the u. S. Stock market will be closed on wednesday to honor president bush. We also have a statement from former secretary of state john kerry who ran against bush 41s son, w. , in 2004. Kerry says he was competitive about politics and fiercely loyal to family but always a gentleman, always a patriot. Well be right back. I havent lost my zest or enthusiasm for this job. I dont feel embattled. I dont feel beat on. I feel very fortunate to be president of this fascinating country. That was then president george h. W. Bush speaking with cnn in 1990, the very first year of his presidency. Now, bush leaves behind not only a rich political legacy, but he was also a war hero, devoted husband, patriarch, American Family dynasty. A man born into wealth but he spent his life in Public Service. With me now is jeffrey angle, founding director of the center for president ial history at Southern Methodist university. And an author of several books on the life, legacy and career of george h. W. Bush, including his latest book, when the world seemed new. Thank you for joining me again. Lets focus on his war service because we havent been able to talk about because he had such a rich life. Enlisted in the navy at age 18. On his 18th birthday in order to serve in world war ii. That was something where he went against his parents and his familys wishes. He was in his senior year when pearl harbor happened. He wasnt ewanted to enlist imm on turning 18. His family, as well as the secretary of war, stillp son, who was a family friend, suggested get some seasoning before you go into the war. Youll be a better office. He enlisted immediately and became one of the youngest aviators in the pacific theater. At the time, i believe he was the youngest aviator maybe thats up for debate . We used to say he was the youngest and then we found some guy that was four days younger. So now we say second youngest. He was really, really young. Yes. With that youth, like so many of his generation, the greatest generation, he had to deal with unbelievable mind bending pressure, tragedy and just raw war. And he had loss. Terrible loss and tremendous responsibility. I think its important, hes only 19, 20 years s during thi period. A bomber, a threeperson crew. 1944, he was shot down over the island. He was the only one of cruise that actually survived the attack. That image really haunted him. The weight of that haunted him the rest of his life. Of all the questions i ever asked him in our interviews, the only question he refused to answer is when i asked him about his flying days. I think he handed me a cookie instead. I think it was really because he just was not interested in opening up to somebody a third of his age about that horrible experience. And he said to the end, to other sources, they thought about his copilot and his bombardier every day and they were a presence in his life. Because they were his wing men and they felt responsibility for them and they died. Yes, he talked about that a lot during the gulf war when he was sending other people into combat. He paid particular attention, it was interesting, to how the pilots who were flying over baghdad at night were faring. Making sure all the planes were back. And he said in his viewpoint, i remember what that was like, the feeling of being in the air with darkness all around you, only thinking about your mission, but really there for your country. It just goes to show you theres a lot of different experiences that people can and do bring into Public Service. When your commander in chief, having that experience and that Situational Awareness is unparalleled. Really is. Its not necessarily i think the experience of having been in the military thats important but its the experience of having a thoughtful, family thoughtic person. We saw others who did not have a military background who were still good commander in chiefs but what they shared was a great sense of the responsibility and the sense they had to put themselves in other peoples boots as it were in order to be willing to send them into combat. Jeffrey engel, thank you for joining me, discussions about your unique insight and the time you spent writing the history of george h. W. Bush. Appreciate it. This just in from the secret service. President bush there talking about his legacy. Of course he had a lifetime in Public Service. Joining me, roger porter, whos known former president bush for more than 40 years. Served with him in the Reagan White House and in the bush presidency. Roger, one of the things about this president we know is perm relationships. After barbara died, he told his family it was so important for him to get back to maine for the summer. You had a chance to have lunch in kennebunkport in august. Tell us about that. It was one of those magical days in maine where the weather was terrific and i went up expecting to spend maybe 15 or 30 minutes with him in his office. And it ended up being a twohour visit. Which we had lunch and talked about all sorts of things happening in washington as well as things that had occurred during the course of his presidency and lifetime. A very easy person to be around. I covered the 88 campaign. Mostly dukakis. I came to washington, one of the early legislative issues was raising the minimum wage in the early 1990s. I was with senator kennedy one day. In private conversation, he said, were going to get a deal, trust me. President bush will call me a liberal s. O. B. Ill call him a heartless s. O. B. In the end, well get a deal. How did that work . Well, he entered office with larger opposition majorities to him. So he recognized right at the outset he was going to need to be a bridge builder. He adopted a veto strategy in which he would lay out what the administrations position was. And then, if necessary, which he found he needed to do 44 times, would veto the bill and then go back to the negotiating table. We did this on the minimum wage. He vetoed the first one that came down that had been senator kennedys original proposal. Then we worked out an agreement which was closer to what the administration originally proposed. The Congress Passed it and he signed it. In the budget deficit negotiations, the democrats essentially told him, you need to get out front and say youre open to tax increases. The president had to go out and say he was open to abandoning his Central Campaign promise. He knew full well, number one, might bring and did bring pat buchanan. And two, could end his political career. Yet he thought it was critical he do it. Why . I have rarely seen anyone agonize offer a decision as much as he did about that decision. We had rising budget deficits at the time. They were predicted to double over the next two years. He felt like he had very few alternatives but to get the best deal he could. In fact, he got a good deal from his standpoint with about 3 in budget restraint on the spending side for every dollar of revenue increases. But it was a very challenging decision for him and he made it knowing that it was going to cost him politically. But like many other things in his life, he was looking at the longer term. He only agreed to do it if it included budget caps and what is called pay go, which would ensure that wouldnt be just a onetime event but it would carry on for a lifetime. To president clintons credit, when he came in, he didnt tear up the agreement. He essentially embraced the bush fiscal policy and we were able to dig ourselves out of the hole during the decades of the 1990s and ultimately come to a balanced budget. Bill clinton doesnt get that gift of a balanced budget without the math with the george h. W. Bush reduction deal. Appreciate your thoughts. Whenever i was with him, i saw his absolute joy for life and true pride in his family. His accomplishments were great from beginning to end. He was truly a wonderful man and will be missed by all. President trump will be in talks today with chinese president xi jinping. A closely watched meeting given the recent trade sessions with china. Joining us from argentina is cnn White House Correspondent abby phillip. This is going to be one of the most crucial meetings of the summit. Absolutely, martin. This is the meeting that i think a lot of the summit has been hinging on. First the meeting and then a dinner between these two World Leaders to sort out issues on trade. But before President Trump goes into that meeting, he did have one other on his schedule in which the media was allowed into, the meeting with germany, angela merkel. In that setting, he was asked about the death of president george h. W. Bush. This is someone who President Trump has, over the last several years, not always had the easiest relationship with. President trump was not someone that george h. W. Bush would have supported for president. He told an authority who wrote a book. And President Trump has responded to this death with quite a bit of graciousness, praising h. W. Bush and praising his legacy. Listen. He was a very type man. I met him on numerous occasions. Just a high quality man who truly loved his family. Very proud of his family. And very much loved his family. Terrific guy. Hell be missed. He led a full life. Very exemplary life. At the end there, a reporter did ask president truck whether he had any regrets about any of the things he said about the bush family or about h. W. Bush. He didnt answer that question and ushered them out of the room. Meantime, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will be appearing at the former president s funeral in washington at the National Cathedral. Remember, earlier this year, when barbara bush passed away, Melania Trump represented the Trump Administration at that event. This time, both the president and first lady will be here. Can i ask you about this meeting with president putin . Supposedly as we went into the summit there wasnt going to be a meeting but now what, there has been a chance encounter . Well, this is an interesting development. The president canceled his scheduled meeting with vladimir putin. That was supposed to be this morning. For about two hours. Citing the situation in ukraine. Russia seized ships and sailors in ukraine. The president said he wont meet with putin until that situation resolved. However, the kremlin said they only expected perhaps a sidelines meeting between the two leaders during the g20. The white house denied there were any plans. Last night at a dinner for the g20 leaders, it turns out according to White House Press secretary Sarah Sanders the two leaders did have an interaction at this dinner. This could be presentries, shaking hands, saying hello. Or it could be something more substantive. Remember, last year, President Trump and president putin had a pullaside meeting. They spoke for a length of time. We may not know for some time, if at all, what happens between the two at that dinner. But according to the white house, they did have some interaction. Woooo pop pop pop just because youre an old guy, you dont have to sit around drooling in the corner. Get out and do something. Get out and enjoy life. Classic president george h. W. Bush right after he jumped from an airplane to mark his 85th birthday. Believe it or not, he wasnt done with sky diving at age 85. Marked his 90th just four years ago. He celebrated the only way he knows how, once again, jumping out of a plane. Here he is in kennebunkport maine. That was his eighth and final jump. The first was in 1944 after he was forced to parachute from his combat plane during world war ii after being shot out of the sky by the japanese. Bush was rescued by a passing sub marriage after floating for four hours in a raft in the ocean. Joining me now is Sergeant Mike elliott. He is a member of the Golden Knight army parachute team. And in more recent times, he was the man who was strapped to president bush during three, three of his birthday jumps, including the final jump at age 90. Thank you for joining me, sergeant elliott. Lets just start with when you have an 83yearold former president of the United States coming to you and saying hey, will you strap me on to you and jump out of a plane with me, did you try to say are you kidding me . When i jumped during the rededication of his library in tex texas, it was a party of the Golden Knight so it was an entire team, not just me by myself. I was selected by my chain of command to be the one to hold the hands of this former world leader. Its quite a task when they say youre going to take the president up and fall out of an airpo airplane together. Not something you hear every day. What a great mission. Just an honor to be able to do it. Any trepidation, particularly the most recent one for years ago . Im guessing not from him but maybe people around him . Well, absolutely. You know, hes always been the anchor. The first time i met her, before we jumped on to the library, she came up, she said, if you hurt him, i will kill you. That was her exact words. I think i was more nervous about her than anyone else. I dont blame you. During his 90th of course, you know, his body was aging. He was not as agile as, you know, the age of 90. So it was some difficulties but his mind was made up. He wanted to jump on his birthday and thats what he did. Any moments, you know, private moments either when youre on the helicopter with him, about to jump, about things that he said, what was going through his mind, maybe even memories of, you know, a time when he was on a parachute not by design but because he was shot out of the sky by the japanese in world war ii . You know, one moment that i distinctly remember is we actually myself and my teammate, dave willie, had a private dinner with former president bush and mrs. Bush at their home in kennebunkport, maine. As we sat there in the sun room he told a story about being shot down and why he wanted to jump again. Because he felt like he didnt do it right the first time he had to exit an aircraft. You know, 41 is a perfectionist and thats why he continued to jump and fell in love with the sport of sky diching. So interesting watching these pictures, it just never getting old. I hope you had a cocktail or two before jumping out of there with him as well as after. Thank you so much for coming on and talking about these incredible memories, thank you. John. Absolutely, thank you. Awesome to hear those stories and to hear that great recollection.
