2013 or 2012, somewhere in there . Jake, it is really spin. I mean, i sat in on some meetin meetings, but to call me an adviser is way over the top. Except in the 2013 letter, you wrote that, it says, quote, over the past half year, i have had the privilege to serve as an informal adviser for the staff of the kremlin in preparation for the g20 summit where issues will be prominent on the agenda, and that is you yourself calling yourself an adviser to the kremlin kremlin. Informal and having conversations with people, and this is ra really nothing, and an ad temd a attempt to distrac real crimes shown in the misleading document. Page 8, it talks about the disguised propaganda and including the planting of false or misleading a articles which is exactly what this is. So it is kind pot calling the kettle black. And it says that the fbi believes that mr. Page has been the subject of targeted recruitment by the russian government and redact and undermine and influence the 2016 president ial election in violation of the u. S. Criminal law. It says that the russians were trying to recruit you. We know that you have said that you went to russia in the summer of 2016 to deliver a commencement address. Is it not a possibility that the russians were trying the recruit you even if you did not take the bait. Is that possible . It seems that is their job and you were working for trump and you had worked in the kremlin in the past, and that is a reasonable thing for them to do . It is totally unreasonable, jake. It speaks to other misleading testimony related to the indictments that eric holder and pr pree fer rara submitted. That young diplomat, i talked to him about my class. We sat and had coffee one time. I met him at at a conference at the society, and we met once for coffee and i gave him some of my class notes that my students at New York University were looking at. It was in one ear and out the other. He never asked me to do anything. I mean, it is so preposterous. And did anyone at any time, and any russian Government Official at any time in 2016 talk to you about either lifting the sanctions or come ppromisin the material that they claimed to have on hillary clinton. On compromising material, not one word. I was hearing about it as you were hearing about it in the mainstream media. In july, some people may have brought it up in passing, because it is a Major Economic issue, and maybe a loose conversation, but i am care canful in making sure that there is a clear record. There is nothing in terms of any nefarious behavior. Okay. So what other dea tails are we learning from this 400page newly released fisa report. We are welcomed in by shimon from washington, and so they are being very careful of what is released in the application. Yeah, they certainly were, and really all that is being released is what is publicly known. There are a couple of things certainly that while may have been publicly known in general, but the characterization of this affidavit by the fbi regarding carter page and what he was doing, and what they believed he was doing, and the interactions with the russians is certainly remarkable. It does not paint a good picture for carter page despite his repeated denials and just to go over what some tof the fbi said in the affidavit. They were calling him an agent of a foreign power. They went on the describe how they believed, and the fbi believed that page is the subject of targeted recruitment by the russian government, and then of course, as they were investigating the russians were t trying to interfere in the election, and then really one of the most remarkable thing s s i the affidavit is how they describe carter page and how they believe, the fbi believes that the russian government efforts are being coordinated with page and perhaps other individuals associated with candidate number ones campaign, and that is the President Donald Trump campaign of course. And other references in the document to carter page and such thing as the fact that they believe that carter a page was collaborating and conspireing with the russian government. There is a lot that we dont know, fred. I it is because so much of the information in this document, and in these documents is red t redacted and clearly blocked out so we cant refsee what the fbi referring to. When you get past the political rhetoric from the president and members of congress, we just dont have a full picture in these papers, in these Court Documents exactly what intelligence the fbi has. They seem to be referencing other people, and perhaps people here in the United States that carter page was communicating with, but those names are blacked out there. Is one other persons name mentioned and that is George Papadopoulos who is mention ed in the documents briefly, but a lot of the information after that is blacked out as well. All right. Shimon, a thank you so much. And now, lets check in with cnns ryan nobles who is near trumps golf resort in new bedford, new jersey, where the president is spending the weekend. Tell us why the president is happy with what has been released. Yeah, fred. We should point out that we have not seen President Trump at all this weekend. He has been at thele golf course in nearby bedminster, new jersey, and not appeared in public at all, but the twitter feed is active and he has tweeted on this topic a few times this morning and four times in fact. He is basically making the case that this is the release of the document vindicates his overall belief that the investigation into his campaign ties to russia are nothing more than a witch hunt. Let me point out one particular tweet. The president saying, quote, congratulations to the Judicial Watch and tom fenton on being successful in getting the carter page documents, and they are reridiculously are redacted and prove that they were mislead by the courts. It is a witch hunt and a scam. This is falling in line with what many in the house of representatives are making about the investigation, and in particular the effort by the departmentf of justice to obtain this surveillance warrant on carter page. They believe it is part tof the overall conspiracy that was done to specifically undermine the trump campaign, and one of the reasons they believe it happened is because the government relied on the dossier which is compiled by a number of sources that collected information on mr. Trump. Much of the information was never completely confirm and while the dossier did play a role in the execution of the warrant, it is important to point out though that their interest in carter page was a long time before and they were suspicious to his ties to President Trump long before the dossier came out. There are republicans who dont agree with this assessment and among them sen or the marco rubio of florida, and he was on cnn this morning and he told jake tapper that from his review of the documents that the federal government lawyers went through the proper process and dotted all of the is and crossed the ts as they are supposed to when they are looking for a warrant like this, and it is correctly obtained. So, fred, a lot of disconnects here in the process, but overall, this is still an effort by President Trump to undermine Robert Mueller and the investigation. Ryan noble, thank you so much. And now, lets talk about this with Cnn National Security analyst, and michael, a cnn legal analyst and former prosecutor and also jamie small a contribute for for time magazine, and good to see you all. And michael, the reactions of the can documents redacted or otherwise, and carter pages contention that it is really not showing merit for why he was being surveillanced. So we have to understand, fred, what the standard is for getting a surveillance of an american. The standard is not probable cause that the person was committing a crime, but rather that he was acting as an agent of a foreign power, and that there was, and he was engaged in clandestine intelligence gathering which may violate u. S. Criminal law. I think that the affidavit really sets forth the basis for meeting that threepart standard of the agent to a foreign government, and clandestine gathering of the information and may implicate federal law standards. This is dating way back before the steele dossier gave added ammunition for the fisa renewal. So the allegation s ths this th president s tweet and which form the bays is for congressman nunez to release his memo are undermined by the release of the documents documents. And samantha, do you have concerns that we are at this juncture that the documents were released, 400 pages redacted or otherwise and how it may potentially make it difficult for the fbi, and the doj and the intelligence agencies to move forward on other suspicions down the line . From the National Security perspective, i am deeply concerned that sensitive Law Enforcement and intelligence investigations and tools which is what the fisa warrant is playing nout the court of public opinion, and we will spend the next few days the democrats and the republicans and the people in between to litigating what the 412 pages do or do not say. But we have existing oversight mechanisms to look into whether the fisa warrants were appropriately obtained by the fbi. We have an fbi Inspector General and doj Inspector General and now because of the congressman nunez Conspiracy Theory which the president supports everyone has an opinion of what is or not in the documents and this is telling the international Law Enforcement community that we dont believe what you are doing, and we will spread potential sources around the world, and if a congressman has an itch to scratch, your name could be declassified in a document sent around the world, and i do not believe it is going to help the recruitment going forward. And so, the president has tweeted out that this is vindication that congressman nunez said that this memo, and saying that not necessarily carter page was under surveillance, that he would be named a foreign agent, you know. Does this release undermine all of those arguments . Well, fred, i think that the release actually is very comprehensive and makes it pretty clear that there was other information that led to this fisa warrant that led to the surveillance of carter page, and it was not just the steele dossier or politically motivated, and they made the case not once but three times before four other judge, and four republicanappointed judges to make the case that there is serious concern, and enough that e wasnt to surveil this person, and so they made it clear that once the steele dossier was incorporate into the fisa warrant that it was political, and this is Something Else that says that the judge was not making it clear that it was politically motivated and so to sams point, the reason why this fisa document has been released now versus never before have we ever seen the release of any fisa documents is because donald trump reduced the standard for releasing top secret documents like these in order to release devin nunez memo, and now the documents fall under the standards and moving forward we could see potentially a lot more of the fisa documents coming out. And then, michael, that carter page has spoken, and even though he does not seem to e e l l lab rate on much, and wont even admit to a lot that is already in that fisa application, that he is listed as an agent of a foreign power. Him talking today, did he make matters worse or did he clarify anything in your view . Well, i think that there are truths and unknowns, and i think that in this case, the truth is that carter page, whenever he opens up his mouth on television does not help himself legally. Just in the short interview with jake tapper, he refused to the acknowledge what he wrote on paper himself that he was an informal adviser to the kremlin which is in part the basis of acting as an agent. So if you have made a admissions of illegal interest in an interview, and fred, also, you cannot miss the irony of the fact that the fisa warrant process 702 was renewed in january. Ron wyden, senator wyden in a Bipartisan Group had what was call called the usa rights a act which is an effort to sort of liberalize in some sense the fisa review process and what could be collected. Of course that lost by a vote of the majority of the republicans who are now complaining about the very process of the lack of transparency in the fisa application process. So there is so much politics here that it is ra really to sams point, it is really undermines the notion of the functional criminal Justice System aided by a functional National Security apparatus. We will leave it there for now. Michael zeldin and samantha vinoget and coming up dan coats is now a apologizing. And the president is touting one of the biggest successes on the world stage, and now in private the president is frustrated over the lack of progress, and where do things stand with that deal . Com President Trumps controversial summit with Vladimir Putin spark ed a backlash on capitol hill and being viewed with mixed approval. Overall, 50 disapproved his meeting with Vladimir Putin, and so how is this going over in florida . Gary tuchman went to find out. Reporter making it easy here to find people who voted for President Donald Trump, but for some trump voters, things went south this week especially following the presentation as he stood next to russian president Vladimir Putin. He is an embarrassment to me. And as a republican, i feel that, i wish he would just learn to say things properly and maybe he would not get himself into so much trouble. Reporter on this day hundreds of republican s s in t village attend ed a forum for republican voters. So this is a good day to ask republicans what they felt. For people to say that he is to blame for what happens in the country. Well, it is donald trump and you expect it. Reporter but does it trouble you that the United States should have been blamed . No. Does it bother you . He says a lot of tough is that he should not say. Reporter and then voters like dick hoffman. I think that he is doing a wonderful job, and i love that he plays the press like a strand of instruments. Reporter are you uncomfortable with how comfortable he was with Vladimir Putin. It did not bother me a bit, because i dont know what went on in the meeting before then. Reporter and nobody does and that is the problem. Well, i have faith in him. Reporter and what he said next to Vladimir Putin was regarding the russian meddling and he said that i will tell you that president putin was extremely strong and powerful in the denial today. What does that mean to you that is so strong and powerful . What is so strong . Well, he is powerful in how he said that. And does it seem creepy for donald trump to be talk about the is that the way you are questioning me in a strong and powerful way. No, i dont see it as a big deal. Reporter and many of the republicans here have been alive for 13 president , and they have seen a lot, and some while continuing to support the president and the party are a little bit wistful. You were born when fdr was president and you have seen fdr, and truman and nixon and eisenhower, and kennedy and nixon and up to donald trump today, and you said that you loved donald trump, and would you be more comfortable if Dwight Eisenhower were presiden president . If Ronald Reagan had won again, yeah. Reporter from one of americas largest retirement communities, the villages, florida. And now, bringing in a panel to discuss this. And for the rest of the Washington Post poll seems to reflect what we heard from those Florida Republican voters that 66 of the republicans said they approve of his performance and while just 8 of the democrats said the same thing, and does the gop number surprise you given the breadth of the backlash from many republicans on the hill following that summit . Well, fred, the answer is no, the numbers are not particularly surprising. A couple of the voters that gary talked to in the end of the piece is to the loyal supporter s, they have given him the benefit of the doubt above known adversaries or friends they have had previously or politicians they may have liked previously, and to them, the president can do no wrong, and to me it is surprising that the disapproval was not higher. For me the next couple of days, i want to the know what the disapproval of the helsinki summit, and what it does to the overall job rating, because maybe some republicans may like the president , but didnt like how that turned out, but are they going to punish him overall and say, well, i still think that he is move oing the kun moving the country in the right direction on the economy and the other move, because he is locked nationally with the job approval of 33, 34 or 35, and so it going to be taking a few days to see if it moves the needle much. And one has to wonder if he can gauge, you know, the result s of from say this poll in compare to say his core support. And if he were to run again in 2020, and he said that he is going to do that, you know, if his support does remain solid. And etch before even before 2020, we have a huge set of elections in 2018, and in watching garys piece, what is remarkab remarkable, and i was wondering what they will be doing in the gubernatorial race, and maybe they dislike what he is doing, and a will they punish the republican nominee for governor and also, there is a race between governor bill nelson going against the outgoing governor rick scott, pause thbe they dont like the president. So are the people who do not approve of the president , i will they punish him or will they turn out when he is not on the ballot . And the democrats are going to be look at all of this wondering where they can make the most gains in the midterms this year. And will much of it be based on the president s behavior. Right. The right now, the president is unifying and energizing the Democratic Party better than any democrat actually could, and i think that to them the helsinki thing just, it just more ammunition or more fuel to the fire. I am not sure that there are Many Democrats on the fence of what they thought about the president , and this pushed them over the edge, but they have to turn the energy and the enthusiasm and money and turn it into votes whether it is in the statewide races in florida or competitive races in house races in south florida, they have to turn it into votes or none of it maert matters. Thank you, nathan gonzalez. Thank you, fred. The Washington Post is reporting that the president has been complaining privately about north koreas recent behavior especially in light of the declaration that the threat of nuclear war with north korea had been eliminated. With me now is cnns Global Affairs reporter elise labott. And so we have seen many canceled meetings with the secretary of state and kim jongun and is that the tip of the ice birg of the frustration . Well, fred, look, first of all, President Trump is upset, and we have seen from the tweets about the perception of the lack of progress. And the negative progress, and the negative press reports that you have seen about his summit with kim jongun, and agreement that followed. Fred, it is pretty clear that he has right to be frustrated with the lack of progress, because you know, six weeks after the s summit, the north koreians North Koreans have not taken any steps to the denuclearization and they have dragged out the talks with the secretary of state with mike pompeo there the earlier in the month, and he did not. The North Koreans stood the u. S. Up in this meeting about the return of the u. S. Service remains, and so it is typical of the north korean playbook, fred. Keep drawing out the process, and try to give as little as possible. Take a listen to general vincent brooks who is the commander of the u. S. Forces in korea who is also the nominee to be the next u. S. Ambassador to south korea talking about the fact that diplomacy takes time. Our expectations have to be t tempered properly, and diplomacy is a process that takes time and engagement, and it is founded on the dialogue and then trust. So the great news is that dialogue has opened, and there is much posturing, and much sensing, and there has to be sufficient room for our diplomats and especially the secretary of state, secretary pompeo to gain the traction and maneuver towards the outcomes that we all seek. And yes, there is a process going on, fred, but again, the North Koreans, and this is typical of them to draw it out, and give as little as possible, and try to get as much from the u. S. And the international community, and the president obviously voicing frustration. We understand that he has been griping to aides that things have stalled. He wants to see more progress, fred. And then what do aides or even those in the diplomatic circles say except that wasnt this kind of expected leading into it that north korea cannot always be trusted . That is right. And you know, the things that people would say it is hung up on what does denuclearization mean, and what do the North Koreans want to do in terms of abandoning the nuclear weapons, but the real question is, fred, whether the koreans have made in diplomatic circles called the strategic choices, and that their future lies in the things that President Trump has said in giving up the nuclear weapons, because we have not seen anything evidence that the north korean koreans are serious about abandoning the nuclear program, and i understand that the secretary pompeo wants to give it a few more months to see if there are more steps to be taken, but he was very clear at the United Nations friday saying that the u. S. Pressure campaign and the International Sanctions will be remaining until kim jongun makes good on some of the pledges he made in singapore. And this week, we take a look at the comedy powerhouses from Carol Burnett to Dave Schappell are using comedy to make audience laughs. This is a sneak peek. I once took a improve class and i remember a woman after the class coming up to say, hey, you are really good at that. You know. I went, oh, my. I am goodt the good at the impr improve. And i hated to memorize lines. And so that combination and wanting to do the improve interested me, and that is the beginning of curb your enthusiasm. The enigma. Are you crazy . Right out of nowhere, spritzing me. What is that . That is a violation. Well, they will go away if you wave them away. Did you wave her away . Yeah, sort of. And i find myself announced when people refer to curb your enthusiasm when it is partially improvised when it is all improvised. There is no script, and larry would say this is what has to happen in the scene, and i will show you a wire that has to be dropped down, and you will say, somehow, you can do that, and if you can get to meet julie louisdreyfu louisdreyfuss. I am happy to call her, but, i cant guarantee. And so you dont have anything guaranteed and exactly when it is very you dont know if it is guaranteed or no. As strange as it sounds, they do sometimes write themselves, and so if you have a good juicy ideas, you dont need a script. You can just wing it. We have moved past the tightly scripted comedy, the improve of curb is the rawness and the responsibility nay the they the audiences are speaking in the comedy they are watching these days. All right. Joining us now is cliff nesteroff a consulting producer on the history of comedy and also, drunk thieves and scoundrels and the history of comedy. I do love that in curb your enthusiasm you wonder how the person on the the other end doesnt lose it knowing that it comes as a surprise. So, the real art of sketching comedy and no real comedy and being able to improvise and, trap late from pop culture, and to what is current. Well, improve and sketch are two different things, but they are completely connected in most ways. For instance the second city which is the most famous outfit for sketch and improve were on stage first, and if it works and they get big laughs they go back home to write it down and then it is a scripted piece. So you write it first and then script it second. That is the difference of the improv and sketch. But sketch is back further than people realize. It is back further than the phrase sketch comedy. Because that phrase is coming with the television age, and prior to tv, the sketch comedy existed in broadway in new york, and thinking of broadway, we think of the elaborate musicals or the serious play, but the sketch comedy in those days was reviewed to as a revue, and revue, and you will see that spelling, because it is sketch comedy and monologues and sketch a pair disand the people who came to tv with people such as milton berle and the bit play dwlaers you saw in the sketch shows and the show of shows sid see czar a sid ceasar and that phrase did not exist or sketch comedy did not exist, but the art forms did exist. If that makes sense. And so, how have you seen both sketch and improve . Well, everybody is influenced by what came before. And so once it was established, one generation feeds into the next. So if you were to go back and have some ettmology or archaeology of comedy, you would find that monty python is one of the most influential scripts of all time the. And the antithesis of the red skelton show or Carol Burnett shows and they were great sketch shows and you could watch them with your mom and dad and apolitical and snl was the opposite, because you had to secretly watch it if you were a teenager without your husband finding out because it had the drug references and plolitical references. And the time, too. And yes, late at night, and the ethos of the cool rebellion whether it is true or not, and Lorne Michaels based the conset on the monty python and he said in u. K. They are doing it correctly, and we want that sty style. So if that had not been the sketch comedy, there would have been no omonty python or snl, and like the Carol Burnett and the red skelton show.
