What the president wants is a more comprehensive strategy to deal with iran in its totality. For too long and the last administration defining around this Nuclear Agreement. This Nuclear Agreement is flawed and has a number of weaknesses in it. So the president said throughout his campaign even. He said, ill either reform the agreement, renegotiate the agreement. Saying, i will either fix the flaws or we will have to have a different agreement all together. I think this is consistent with that. Now we want to deal with the Nuclear Agreement weaknesses but we need to deal with a much broader array of threats that iran poses to the region. The policy itself really has three components. I think it is important that people understand this. The president describing these in his speech. There is the Nuclear Agreement and we will undertake an effort to see if we can address the many flaws in the agreement. Working with partners. It may be a secondary agreement. We may undertake a secondary agreement. But there is a much broader array, Ballistic Missile programs. Terrorist organizations in the region. These are all very threatening or anizations and destabilizing activities and yemen to support rebels, huties, everywhere you look, irans activity destabilized the region and threatens those. But the third element of the policy and the president touched on it in his address is this is not about the iranian people. This is about the regime in iran. The revolutionary rezeem that ever since it came to power has been intent on hurting and harming americans and harming those in the region. We do not hold the iranian people accountable for that. So we support their cries for democracy and freedom and hope one day the iranian people will retake control of the government of iran and restore it to its rich history of the past. Reintegrate and become a fruitful member and trade commerce in the region. So that is really the end game here. A very long game and we realize that. Reporter, ryan, tiller saying they want to fix the flaws. Is that consistent with what President Trump has been saying . Thats right. President trump did not withdraw the United States from the deal. Dedecertify, so it moves to congress. Again, the administration both secretary mattis, tillerson and President Trump are saying the u. S. Will stay in the deal for now. Again they are looking to work with other members of that deal. European allies, correct what they say are flaws, including the idea of a sunset provision. Whether or not iran will be allowed to enrich uranium down the road. Inspections, things like that. But remains to be seen whether or not they will have much luck. Secretary tillerson referencing an additional separate deal. European allies coming out strongly and publicly in recent days supporting the iran deal as it stands now. Again, secretary tillerson and trump pushing on another issue. With activity that u. S. Considers provocations. Support for militant groups like hezbollah, huties in yemen and you saw President Trumps administration taking action on friday designating the corps for potential sanctions. All of this kind of twopronged approach. Remains to be seen whether the allies or iran itself will be willing to enter any kind of adjustments to the nuclear deal. Secretary tillerson speaking about north korea. Talking about how diplomacy was still in the lead until quote the last bomb drops. This is as President Trump casts doubt if diplomacy through series of tweets and secretary of state and President Trumps National Security adviser general hr mcmaster saying diplomacy would be in the lead with regards to north korea in another interview today. The president doesnt have to clear anything with me. But his tweet is consistent with his policy. With both the iran policy and with the north korea policy, the president gave us very clear guidance at the outset. We delivered as National Security team multiple optiones to the president. Had broad ranging discussions. The president made decisions on very coherent well laid out strategies and thats what we are executing now. So there, hr mcmaster, laying out that the president reviewed a wide range of strategies with iran and north korea. We cewill see which one he move with forward. Thanks very much. We were just talking about the north korean problem, trying to resolve the dispute with north korea and President Trump tweeted, i told rex tillerson, our wonderful secretary of state, he is wasting his time negotiating with little rocket man. Then tweeted, save your energy, rex, we will do what has to be done. If was a chinese official or north korea official who saw these tweets as you were there trying to negotiate or solve the problem, i might think secretary tillerson doesnt really speak for President Trump. Fortunately, jake, President Trump and president xi have probably one of the closest relationships that a president has with a secretary of state. They have the summit of mara largo, comprehensive bilateral in hamburg. The president is speaks to president x i on the telephone often. They have seven or eight calls. I have a very close relationship with the state counsellor of china who reports to president xi. Rest assured that chinese are not confused with the policy towards north korea or what actions and efforts are directed at. Do tweets like that undermine you . Well i think what is the is president is doing is trying to motivate action on a number of peoples part in particular the regime in north korea. I think he does want to be clear with kim jongun that he has military preparations ready to go and he has those options on the table and we have spent substantial time perfecting those. But be clear to me that president has made clear that he he wants it solved diplomatically and is not seeking to go to war. He doesnt think it is waste of time . No, sir. He made it clear to me to continue my diplomatic efforts which we are and we will, as i have told others, the diplomatic efforts will continue until the first bomb drops. How is it to hear that they will have diplomacy until the first bomb drops, from secretary of state. Very unusual. But the relationship is President Trump is bad cop. He is there threatening north korea and iran and you have secretary of state tillerson and National Security adviser mcmaster playing down those comments today. What is so unusual is, a, the rhetoric, but b, the president as bad cop. Is there a danger that a Statement Like that can be misinterpreted by north korea, North Koreans characterizing previous statements by this president as a declaration of war. Yeah. An enormous gamble. He threatened north korea as you mentioned. Very strong rhetoric condemning iranian regime. So the question is what happens over time. Lets be fair. Maybe this will work. Maybe North Koreans are blinking. There are anniversaries that passed north korea and there br werent launches of missiles he as have happened in the past. What happened if they dont blink and the problem is trump keeps threatening force and if he doesnt actually use force, you know, the word of the american president will mean less an what happens over time. When you look at the fact 25 years of botched agreements and negotiations and accountability not kept by north korea, thats the whole situation that got us to where we are having to watch day by day to see if they he do an icbm test going forward. What we see with iran is dont let it become the next north korea. What this says to north korea is dont expect us to engage in a bad deal. And also, if at any point we do come up with something expect us to follow through with it. Expect us to hold you accountable. You wont just have a freeforall. David, is that the case . Look, i give the administration for talking tough, maybe tougher than president obama, but the signal to north korea is do not enter an agreement with the United States because we will pull out of it. This is profound, part of those meetings will be to figure out how to approach the anthem issue as a more unified front. I talked to high level nfl executive saying the league feels it is vital that the league gifts owners the best opportunity to create positive change in units effectively and not have message or intentions diluted or misconstrued. There is this thought that players are disrespecting the flag and military. But the people on the inside understand theres been a lot of work behind the scenes and culmination of that is again, where you have the nfl and nflpa working together and with the players, which never happenes. When President Trump challenged owners to fire players when kneel, we saw more networks airing the National Anthem. Watching the beheavory of the players, coaches et cetera. Lately, however, today, we see some networks made a decision about not showing the players during the anthem. Does this network send a message it advertisers . What is happening here . I think a combination of the two. I dont think the president today necessarily get involved in this. If you recall the president made this comment in alabama during the week health care was failing. The president endorsed a canned na candidate that everyone in knew wouldnt win. It was a distraction brilliantly done by the president so we werent focussing on heat j care or a candidate that president endorsed who everyone knew wouldnt win the election. The consumer will dictate where this ultimately goes. If individuals start watching the nfl, you will see viewership down. If they stop going to games you will see a decrease in the amount of people filling stadiums. But im hesitant to be optimistic about this fall meeting 70 of the players are africanamerican. 70 of the guys, significant portion, come from areas and communities where these issues are real. A lot of their relatives face these issues everyday. Some guys have their own personal stories themselves. Then why not promise for the first time they are at the table and able to convey their concerns, messages, and hoping that owners might better appreciate what it is they he have to say by now being at the table . I dont understand why they have to be at the table for the owners to understand or appreciate the legitimacy of the concerns that these players are raising p. I dont agree with this form of protest. I think you should stand for the flag. That does not take way from thely jet ma thely legitimacy of the concern of the race of our country. If you want to know how a company sees a situation, follow the dollars. If the nfl is concerned about the issues, they will invest money into the cities where the players come from. The jury is still out on if they will. Okay. So everyone will remember, september 24, we showed you pictures of solidarity. Players, coachers, owners, kneeling, locked in arms. Following day, monday night, cowboys owner jerry jones on the field locking arms. This isnt quite the image i was talking about. We saw on the field solidarity. Then there the next night monday night football jerry jones locked in arms and then now we have jerry jones statement saying this, we have a chance of damaging not just the game but in this particular case cowboys franchise. Lets come up with ways we can give a message about Police Brutality or we can give a message about disparity. We can give messages but wont be able to give it if by are not as substantive as we are and this flag issue is taking away from how substantive we are. So is hshermichael, what is you interpretation of that statement from jerry jones . I think jerry jones wants his cake and to eat it too. Imagine if every nfl player, at least africanamerican ones, decided not to play. They said, if you dont take into consideration, we will just stay home. There will be no games. Again, if the nfl is serious they need to listen to the concerns of their players. These are legitimate concerns. I understand you want it respect the flag. There are a respective number of viewers and supporters in the nfl who do not like this form of protest. I get the dollar and cents side of things. But consider your employees. If those guys stay home, there is no game. If there is no game, no one is making money. Is that a happy medium . And i wonder by design, protest is to affect change. It may rdisrupt to get change. If there is no change and it means changing rules about how you protest, is there a happy medium in what jerry jones had to say . And yes, ben, i heard you. Im not sure if there is a happy medium in what mr. Jones had to say. I think in the nfl commissioner statement, there are possibility of some kind of compromise]. I think it is important that nfl not try to micro manage Free Expression and protest even as it tries to retain the fan base. Keep the viewers, fill the seats in the stadiums and coliseums but be clear. Fans come from community where there is police plis conduct. They come from cities where you have the community on one side and police on the other. With systemic racism is the order of the day. The nfl has the opportunity to promote discussion. Debate. Conversation. Even as it recognizes protests. But the thing to be avoided here is for the sake of unity suppressing protests and having a zero kol tatolerance policy, will, with regard to Free Expression. This is very, very important. And i believe the nfl has the opportunity here to really advance the conversation. These athletes are really modeling what should be done by the president and attorney general. They are engaging the country, doing so in a respectful way. Not in any way disrespected the flag. In fact do you believe the nfl bears a responsible to help convey the message of, this is the intent behind kneeling . This is what the players meant. Not as a sign of disrespect to the flag but to call attention to social and Racial Injustices. Should the nfl help make that declarative message . Yes. When players stand for the National Anthem and they recognize the flag, they are recognizing the flag as we say in the pledge, in the republican for which it stands. If you stand for the values of the flag or kneel for values of the flag you must convey the values of the flag and Co Constitution and so the nfl can play an Important Role here. It is important that it do that. Not merely because the athletes protesting but because sports bring the country together. The nfl commissioner recognizes that. Certainly players do. This is a particularly good moment to do that. Ben . Have you a huge the nfl has a huge problem. Huge messaging problem. They have an identity crisis as a league. This league used to be filled with roles where if you had cleats that were honoring those that died on th9 11, fwo two players were fined 6,000 for wearing them during warmup. Players are fined for not having their socks pulled up. There are a lot of messages. The biggest day of protest on the nfl is the day after donald trump talked about this. Majority of those players did not come out in the last year and stand by Colin Kaepernick or stand with black lives matter or stand against Police Brutality. They came out against donald trump so it became a political statement was it done because donald trump was misconstruing the message the intent behind the protest if kneeling we saw with Colin Kaepernick and as a collective body nfl players decided, solidarity for the intent behind that, thats why we are doing this. If you are a player and you arent willing to stand up for Police Brutality the last year on every weekend there was a football game, every sunday, thursday or monday night game and you were never part of that then all of a sudden you go out there, the opticsover whelmingly say, that you are now mad at the president and donald trump and you are protesting here is another question. Another followup question. Is it that others did not do that because they saw the consequence of, hes not playing. He is not on a team. I dont think so. There were plenty of players still involved. Coll Colin Kaepernick i think is a separate issue. Here is a point back to the nfl. The nfl totally overplayed their hand here and did not real eyes how Many Americans one, want to watch sports on sundays and dont want to be lectured on politics. Brand and circumstance. The second point is, the nfl, they alienated a large amount of their fan base and the polls overwhelmingly show that the people in america are in favor of protests. They are not in favor of protesting against the American Flag the National Anthem starspangled banner or anything that deals with the that goes back to the whole messagi messaging issue. Yeah be they have a problem. At that moment to get attention to the cause is kneeling during the anthem. The kneeling is a protest against the flag. But people take it as a protest and disrespectful. So that brings us to this week and whether it is the responsibility of the nfl to help convey the message of what is the intent here . So dante, what were you about to say .
