Today, virginias governor, terry mcauliffe, issued a very stern message to those violent protestors. To the White Supremacists and neonazis who came to our beautiful state yesterday, there is no place for you here in charlottesville there is no place for you in virginia and there is no place for you in the United States of america [ cheers and applause ] we deplore your hatred, your bigotry and shame on you i want to bring in cnn rosa flores on the scene in charlottesville right now. Rosa, tell us more about this victim, you were at a memorial for Heather Heyer a little while ago. What are you learning about this young woman, only 32 years old . Reporter you know, wolf, we are learning more about Heather Heyer. We know shes 32 years old and just from up the road about 17 miles from ruckersville, virginia and worked here in charlottesville. Worked at the Bankruptcy Department of a law firm as a paralegal. In other words, helped people find a new financial future. But i want to you have look behind me, because this is the street where a car plowed into a group of protestors, and, of course, now we know that Heather Heyer has died from those injuries, and 19 other people were injured. Now, the latest were hearing from hospitals is that ten of those people are still in Good Condition and at the hospital. Nine others discharged. You can see the memorial is growing. The outpouring of support from the Community Growing all morning. People broiinging in flowers an messages. Earlier in the day we were at a Church Service where governor mccaauliffe spoke blunt calling them white supremacist and they dont belong in this city and this state. Taking his words very seriously pt but what the congregation didnt like about the message from the president of United States. Take a listen. The message that was sent out from number 45 was very much inadequate. I didnt feel it had compassion. I didnt feel it spoke for, not only people of color but for anyone going through, people suffering. I think he divides and doesnt bring us together. And the biggest part for me the man just has no compassion, period. It really hurts. You know . More should have been said. You need to call it what it is, and stop playing around with it. Call it out were hurting. Reporter as you take another live look, that is the photo of Heather Heyer brought here to this memorial that keeps growing, wolf, as the day goes by. Theres been a lot of people coming here in solidarity with a lot of pain, a lot of grief. Of course, asking for the support not only from this town and from this city but from around the country. Wolf . A wonderful young woman killed, brutally killed in that horrific car assault. Rosa flores, thanks very much. Tomorrow the suspect in that car assault in charlottesville, virginia, will face a judge. That man now charged with seconddegree murder. 20yearold james alex fields jr. From ohio. The mans mother saying her son drove from ohio to charlottesville to take part in that rally, that she thought had something to do with President Trump. Thats what the mother said. Now lets go to cnns brian todd coveral all the latebreaking developments in charlottesville. Brian, also a confrontation that occurred just a little while ago. Tell us about that. Reporter right, wolf. A real illustration of the escalating and percolating tensions here in charlottesville that still exist a day after that rally. At this point im standing on, just moments ago the organizer of that white supremacist rally unite the right, wanted to hold a news conference. Microphones were set up. Counter protestors set up here chanting, when Jason Kessler came out he started to talk into the microphone. Nobody could hear what he was saying because people were screaming, drowning him out. Musical instruments were being played to drown him out and then eithered media, the crowd or both started to get closer to kessler and almost converge on him. Were not clear what exactly caused him to go down. Either he fell or was pushed down. At that point Police Quickly converged on the scene. Riot police in full riot gear got oil around the building, to safety, inside the police department. On the other side of this same building kind of. I believe we have tape of that now showing that. As i walk down here, towards a protest still going on. These are a group of counter protestors behind me still here and chanting some things and making some speeches. Again, illustrating a real anger at the fact that Jason Kessler is still in this town, even after the governor and the mayor told him and all of his followers, get out of town. We dont want you here. He comes back this afternoon to hold a news conference. Hes drowned out. Falls. Gets taken out of here by the cops and a lot of angry people are still here. Photojournalist, coming with me down here. There seems to be some tension here now. Some people yelling at each other. And chanting things, and confronting the police. Ill try to get a look and see whats going on here. They seem to be shouting down a man over here. So there are there are police around us, and were going see how this plays out, but it seems to be a little more than shouting match here, wolf. Again, an illustration of the enormous tension that converged upon charlottesville yesterday, today, even back to friday night wth that torch march on the university of virginia campus, wolf. We also have some tape of the actual car crash, which really escalated the situation yesterday, that horrible car crash where the suspect, james alex fields allegedly plowed into a group of protestors walking on 4th street a short way from me here, killing that 32yearold woman Heather Heyer, injuring several other people, striking other vehicles. Heres a look at some of the tape that we put together about that. [ bleep ] oh [ bleep ] ah [ bleep ] [ bleep ]. All right. Reporter still angry protestors behind me here chanting at each other, yelling at each other. Yelling at the police. The police, you can see it a line of police here. Watching them. Again, not nearly what we saw yesterday, but still illustrating the tension here, wolf. A lot of people in this town still very angry. Want the White Supremacists out. This is whats happened. Brian, were stay in very, very close touch with you. Youll watch developments for us and well get back to you soon. Brian todd on the scene for us. Earlier this morning, the mayor of charlottesville was speaking out. He says hes holding the president of the United States responsible. At least in part. For the violence in his city. Part of his interview was on cnns state of the union with jake tapper u. Said you place blame for these terrifying events right at the door of the white house and the people around the president , quote unquote. A strong charge to level. Why do you think the president himself bearing responsibility . Look at the campaign he ran. I mean, look at the intentional courting both on the one hand of all of these white supremacist, White Nationalist groups like that, antisemitic groups and then look on the other hand the repeated failure to step up, condemn, denounce, silence, you know, put to bed all of those different efforts. This comes on the heels of growing backlash over the president s failure to specifically condemn White Supremacists after the deadly attack. Meanwhile, top members of the Republican Party arent holding back in their condemnation. House speaker paul ryan, senator majority leader mitch mcconnell, senators marco rubio, rob portman, among many others speaking out specifically against 9 bigotry and hatred of the white supremacist groups. While the president faces tough criticism over his response to the attack, his Homeland Security advisers tom bossert says the president s message called for respect and love among americans. Bringing in our White House Correspondent athena jeans fra bridgewater, new jersey, where the president is spending his working vacation. First of all, do we know what the president is doing, a beautiful sunday, up in new jersey . Reporter hi, wolf. Not so far. No word on what the president is doing. In fact, a small pool of reporters assigned to follow him today isnt even supposed to gather for several more hours. Weve asked several times whether hes golfing. No word. It is a Beautiful Day for golf but we have no word on that. We also havent heard anything more from the president about this issue, charlottesville, and what happened there, or any other issue at all today. But we did hear from the president s daughter ivanka trump who is, of course, one of his seen dwrer anior advisers w twitter, there should be no place in society for racism, white sue primsy and neonazis. We must all come together as americans and be one country united. We also heard a couple hours after that from a white house official, who wouldnt give their name, but putting out a statement that went further than we heard from the president yesterday. Here is that statement from the white house official the president said very strongly in his statement yesterday he condemns all forms of violence, bigotry and hatred and of course that includes White Supremacists, kkk, knee ow nazi and all extremist groups and called for National Unity and bringing all americans together. Of course, wolf, we stressed this point. We havent heard those kinds of words coming from the president himself. Despite the fact this is a president who has been passionate about criticizing a long list of people, whether they are republicans or democrats. From Hillary Clinton and barack obama to Senate Majority leader mitch mcconnell. Senator john mccain. A whole long list. Called the media enemy of the people, but groups he has not criticized explicitly, White Nationalists, White Supremacists, kkk, et cetera. A lot of folks want to hear the tough words from the president directly. Wolf . Have they explained, white house officials, maybe even on background, what the president meant when he condemned in his words, in the strongest possible terms the egregious displace of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides, on many sides. The words on many sides. What did he mean by 234that . Reporter we asked that question repeatedly and got a response from a white house official essentially doubling down on what the president said. The statement from that official was along the lines of, the president condemned the hatred, bigotry and violence from all sources and all forms, and this official pointed out there was violence from the counter protestors and the protestors nap is true. There was an outbreak of violence with the demonstrators and counterdemonstrators, but this idea that all sides are responsible for the hatred and bigotry on display that is something that a lot of folks have taken issue with saying that the president is drawing, is equating the kkk and the neonazis and white sue prim 1i69 supremacists with the people out in the streets demonstrating that kind of hate. Wolf . And the senator from colorado specifically called out the president in pointed words. Tell view us what hes saying. Reporter play what senator guard had 20 say about this on state of the union this morning. This is not a time for vagaries, innuendo ar allow room to be read between the lines. This a is a time to lay blame. Lay blame on bigotry, White Supremacists and hatred. That needs to be said. This president has done an incredible job naming terrorism around the globe as evil. Radical islamic terrorism. Whether in europe or the middle east he has said and called it out time and time again and these president needs to do exactly that today. Reporter and you heard senator gardner say the president needs to come out and do that today. As i said, wolf, we have no news of any planned statement from the president. We havent heard anything from the president about this or any other issue today, and i should point out gardner is not alone. One of the first who took to twitter yesterday. I believe we have that tweet directing his message directly at the president saying, mr. President , we must call evil by its name. These were White Supremacists and this was domestic tear original. Gardner joined several other republicans who called on the president to be fuf tougher, an wolf, this is so important, as a candidate, candidate trump got a lot of support from the socalled alt right, or White Nationalists movement. He was endorsed by the likes of david duke, its former grand wizard of the kkk. And he has been hesitant to outwardly denounce these groups. Soon after his elengz as president elect in november he gave an interview to the New York Times where he said he didnt want to energize this alt right movement, disavowed them, but havent been forceful and hasnt repeated that disavow recently at all. This is, of course, someone who will repeatedly criticize people over and over on twitter, but he hasnt had the same harsh rhetoric when it comes to these White Nationalists and white supremacist groups. Wolf . Basically, if the president is ready to clarify, make an additional statement, there are tv, there are crew theres, theres a pool of reporters. He could go out within a few minutes. He could make that statement, but reporter absolutely. Were standing by. From what i hear from you, athena, white house officials have gishen no indication hes about to do that . Reporter right. Exactly, wolf. We are always here and ready in case he wants to. Lets hope he does. Athena jones, thanks very much. Our next guest is brendan gilmore, went to the charlotteville area to protest against the White Supremacists and actually eyewitnessed the deadly car assault. He posted on twitter these words, he said, let there be no confusion, this was deliberate terrorism. Brendan is joining us now. Brendan, thanks very much for joining us. You saw the moment that car plowed into that crowd killing that one young woman. Describe what you saw. Thank you, wolf. I was here to protest against the nazis that came to town with their hateful ideology. After the main protest had broken up we moved to a side street. A peaceful nonviolence march taking place of fellow protestors against racism, coming up a very narrow street arm to arm. I was videotaping them as they were marched and when i heard from behind me a car accelerating very fast down the street i pulled back and filmed the video many have seen now. The car deliberately targeting, lining up, gunning the engine to it do maximum damage on the crowd. Smashed into the crowd. Bodies went flying and reverse to make his escape sending people scurrying out of the way. The crowd in which this car plowed into that crowd were all, correct me if im wrong, kau counterprotestors, they didnt want neonazis in charlottesville . Thats correct. Any indication in advance Something Like this could happen . Given warning, any indication, be careful . Absolutely. This scene was very tense in charlottesville and, of course, violence had broken out in the main protest site here in town. I was quite concerned the situation would get violent particularly because of the amount of weapons and the nazis, militias protecting them and dressed as regular security forces. You had private security forces, and others, carrying weapons, and i was very worried there would be a breakout of gun violence. Luckily we were saved from that, unfortunately werent saved by a terrorist attack by a motorist member whose ideology is based on violence. Denying certain classes of citizens their right to exist. Basic fundamental rights. And no doubt these folks came to charlottesville intent on spurring violence, a key part of who they are. How close were you, brendan, to the actual car assault . I was about an arms length away from the car. I jumped out of the way. I was in the middle of the street. Pulled back when it went by. Got a clear vision of the drivers head. He had tinted windows and couldnt clearly see him except he was a white male. He narrowly missed me and i witnessed something no one should have sow tea. To see. Were any of your friends hit by that car . I dont believe any of my Close Friends were hit by the car. Just brothers and sisters in solidarity with standing up to these racists who have absolutely no place in our society. As you know, President Trump condemned hate and bigotry but failed to specifically call out the White Nationalists, the neonazis. Listen to this for a moment. We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides. On many sides. What were your thoughts after you heard this from the president and amp specifically seeing the violence firsthand . I think the president s at a failure of leadership. I prefer the statement former Vice President joe biden made. There was one side here. A side of right. A side of justice. A side of love. On the other side, hatredfilled group intent on violence, and there cant be any seat for this kind of violence at the table. Brennan gilmore, far fortuna youre okay. Thank you, involve, the vice mayor of charlottesville urging us to stand together against all the hate groups. Hearing him in his own words when he joins us. Thats coming up. Discover card. Hey. What can you tell me about your new Social Security alerts . Oh well alert you if we find your Social Security number on any one of thousands of risky sites, so youll be in the know. Ooh. Sushi. Ugh. Being in the know is a good thing. Sign up online for free. Discover Social Security alerts. I hope we vigorously prosecute this as a case of terrorism. This is not be tolerated in our free society. We stand on the rule of law. On state of the union with jake tapper earlier today. And speaking of protests in charlottesville, virginia. This opening up a formal civil rights situation into the circumstances surrounding the car that plowed into that crowd of protestors killing a 32yearold paralegal from charlottesville, virginia. Heather heyer. 32 years old. Also this morning, the white house Homeland Security adviser tom bossert said both he and President Trump want the suspect to face swift justice. Bossart defending President Trumps statement on the deadly rally in which he condemned violence, on many, many sides. How many people did the counterprotestors kill yesterday, mr. Bossart . Well, ill tell you, one death is too many, jake. But that wasnt by the victim was a counterprotestors. Hold on one moment, jake. I dont for one minute, i dont for one moment and i wont allow you for one second to put knee a position of being an apologist for smig who is now a murderer. This man to face swift justice. Ed pret shares that view. I view that position and i wont allow you of putting knee a position of not finding justice as quickly as possible. You just decried both sides. Decried both sides. Here is a situation, mr. Bossart. No. Neonazis, the klan, alt right and others went to charlottesvil charlottesville, virginia, chanting antisemitic, antiafricanamerican and other antiracist slogans provoking the people of charlottesville, virginia. Making them feel ntimidated. Yes, violence broke out. One person killed by one of these alt right klan nazi protestors and you just decried both sides of this, and this is the issue. No, i didnt. No. No, i didnt. And youre making this issue a little bit distorted. So what i would decry is the individual that committed murder yesterday. What i would do, though, is quibble with this notion that any of this is acceptable. These groups showed up spewing hate. These groups showed up looking for violence. What groups . Its important for people to understand. What groups are you referring to . The groups that well, i refer to the groups that clashed yesterday. I think 2 wit was pretty graphically evident. Tom bossert speaking with jake tapper on state of the Union Earlier today. Tom bossert, the president s Homeland Security adviser. My next guest, joining us now, vice mayor of charlottesville. Thanks very much for joining us. Thank you for having me, sir. Let me First Express all of our deep condolences for whats taken place in your beautiful community. How is your community, vice mayor, responding to the horrific incident that we all saw yesterday . Before i get started id like to express my deepest condolences to those who lost family members over the weekend. For that i am truly saddened, really sorry about all of that, and im hoping that our community can rally around not only these white supremacist domestic terror attacks, and that we stand together. How is my city doing . A tale of two cities. Yesterday people were rather sad because of everything going on, angry, upset, but on the other hand i literally saw 150 book bags, handed to people throughout the community by a group of young black men and young black women at the park, a park within the traditional africanamerican community, free feed, music, gave back. They made sure that the community was well taken care of representing charlottesville. Not the cku klux klan clowns, nt those who think they can intimidate us because it doesnt work. We are a community thats resilient, stand together and will be better because of this. I guarantee and bet my life on it. We will survive this and be all right. I know it. As you know, some of these white supremacist groups, hes in neonazi groups, are expected to make themselves visionable threw throughout the week and ct weeks to come, they say. Is there a plan to have a larger Police Presence during what are expected to be more of these protests . What do you think . Well, im sure that these individuals are going to want to come back and mask their hate and what they describe as free speech, but we will be prepared. I understand that we are going to have, again, more protests, more people who want to come, but charlottesville isnt the only city that will face this issue. This has become a nationwide issue when e see these white sue supremacists under the presiden. The people here of charlottesville, white people, black people, yellow people, old, young people, were a community that rallies around together. This is a community that i saw pick me up on my darkest and deepest moments to encourage me and theyve done the same for other people. Were a Resilient Group and sometimes may get knocked down, but we always stand back up. Thats who charlottesville is, and who were going to continue to be. I know that 45 will come out and condemn these white supremacist groups. I heard, was listening right before this, the individuals in his cabinet refusing to call them what they are. White supremacist groups. Our governor has done so and were calling on every elected official around the country to condemn these actions and these White Supremacy groups and let them know this will not be tolerated. You say 45, you mean President Trump. What specifically, vice mayor, do you want to hear him say . I want him to condemn the White Supremacy groups. I dont know if i can be any clearer than that. He came out way statement yesterday i thought was nowhere near where it should be talking about had these issues forever. Water is wet. We know weve had these issue as long time and were working on that. We need him from the highest office of the land come out and condemn them. You have an individual like david duke, leader of the ku klux klan clowns, saying they are here to fulfill the drama from their president what more do you need to hear . He needs to denounce these individuals if he want to truly bring this country together. I assure you, were doing everything we can here in charlottesville and i know others are doing things in other places. Look, i want to be clear. No ones perfect. Ive done things in my past im not proud of, but we grow from them. This is an opportunity for our president to grow in the leader he needs to be in that office. So, 45, were looking fod your leadership. Condemn the white supremacist attacks, condemn the domestic terrorists. Tell them to leave. Youre their leader. Stand up. Youre referring to some of the criticism the attacks youve received for some racist, homophobic viewpoints for many years. Tell viewers about that. What your response has been, how you learned from that. Sure. So i mean, i have no qualms talking about the issues ive had when i was 22, 23, 24 years old, but thats part of the reason why i love this city. Last year we addressed the streets from before and i apologized to the entire city and again thanked the city for herping me grow into the young man i am today. Im no longer the 22yearold somewhat ignorant young man i was before. I 30yearold father, husband of three, community leader. A person who works with all kinds of communities. Lgbtq, white people, asians, whoever. I teach in communities with different shades. And this isnt a joke or game. Weve mature add great deal and ive grown a lot because of the people here. Thats why i believe that this city is so resilient and why i know we will survive this because the people here wont tolerate it. Again, im not here to place blame on anyone. Im looking for simple leadership, because our community will heal. Our community will move forward. Will the country be able to do the same . Thats what were hoping for. One final question, vice mayor, before i let you go. Whats going to happen to that confederate statue of robert e. Lee in your community, supposed go down. I take it its under litigation right now . Whats the status . Yes. So its under litigation now. Were going to court to hear from our local judge to render his ruling in regards to whether or not he believes that we have the rights to be able to move it or not, but i hope everyone can see that this is more than just about a statue. These White Supremacists are using the statue to mask their hate and come here to do what they want to dot to invoke fear. If thats the rallying point youve seen on several occasions. Richard spencer brought his group of minions to have a rally with tiki torches from walmart thinking that would scare us, and mob mentality, thinking they will scare us and other groups, ku klux klan tried to do the same thing. Hoping our judges and the state can see people are using the statute a a ways to spread hate and it needs to be moved. We cannot be a city of inequity, inclusion and inequality, if a person still alive, i in this position now would probably want me beaten and wouldnt want to look me in the eye. Im told by team they want to hang me from a tree and that statute needs removed because it doesnt represent the heritage, some say, and represents for hate. In this city, this is not a hateful one, an equitable one. Were getting to move it. So lets move it. Home of a great worldclass university. University of virginia, as well. Indeed. The vice mayor of charlottesville. Thank you very much. Dr. Bellamy, but thank you very much. And what the white supremacist groups are up to now. What their message of hate is all about. Stay with us. Games. But with odor free blueemu continuous pain relief spray, i can box out any muscle or joint pain immediately. Blueemu continuous pain relief spray. It works fast and you wont stink. People are bleeding everywhere. People are on cots. Doing chest compressions on a body. People left the car because they thought it bas a cop car. He was slow and slammed on the gas right into people in front of the car. Most were in a state of shock. We saw what happened. To really realize that somebody possibly died right in front of us. President trump condemned hate and bigotry on many sides after the deadly violence in charlottesville but failed to specifically call out the White Supremacists. Today a white house official release add statement saying, the president said very strongly in a statement yesterday that he condemns all forms of violence, bigotry and hatred and, of course that includes white supremacist, kkk, neonazi and all extremist groups. Joining us now, cnn sara sidner. Lots of groups are out there. Walk us through the various groups, because youve been doing serious reporting on all of them. Reporter going Cross Country talking to feel affected by hate and people who actually perpetrate hayesful acts. It is disturbing to see that those numbers are going up. There are more hate incidents now since donald trump has become president. That has across the board reported out by several different organizations that actually follow hate. Let me go through a little bit of who these groups are, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. Look at these groups and what they believe in you see how hateful they are. A White Nationalist, white supremacist, support ideologists, some are openly using racial slurs to incite violence. Other parts of the groups claim theyre not violent, but still spew hatred. And different categories that you will be familiar with, the whole world knows about the kkk, the neonazis and n neoconfederate. Then the alternate right or alt right or alternative right, if you will. This is an interesting group. A couple different facets. The alt right for the most part according to Southern Poverty Law Center has a core belief about white identity being under attack by multicultural forces, or white genocide. Youll hear that word, by the way, is not a reality. It talks about focusing on preservation of western swivization and particularly european civilization, and it coins, the name was coined by richard spencer, head of a White Nationalist think tank. During his speech right after President Trump became president , he had this speech saying that we have won and used nazi words saying, hail trump, hail victory and people came up and did the nazi salute. He certainly used neonazi language as hes trying to rile up his base. And then we have the antifascists. Not considered a hate group, created in 1930s as a reaction to nazism and resurfaced recently over the last few years because of this global nationalist movement, and they target racism. Fascism. Nazism. One part of this group known at the black bloc targets people and ideas, but also go out and protest and can be destructive, violent acts. Weve seen a lot of that here on the west coast at berkeley, university of berkeley, for example. Seeing that play out, and known at black block and are often very destructive. I want to talk about the numbers here. If you look across the board since november, since the election of donald trump theres been a spike in hate incidents. Not hate crimes. Hate incidents. Things like recruitment, going to college campuses, putting posters, for example, all over campuses. This particular event in charlottesville, virginia, was for recruitment. There is no doubt about it. Going out with those tiki torch its trying to she peopow people are hundreds who that believe white identity was to get people to look and see there are a lot of people and say, hey, maybe i can join as well. They are looking to recruit and looking to recruit young people, wolf. So youre reportering on all of this based on all the organizations that monitor these kinds of hate groups. Were seeing more of these white supremacist protests right now than in years past, is that right . Absolutely correct, wolf. We were in houston, for example. This didnt get reported in the national media. There was a very similar protest. You had hundreds of people show up to protest the possibility that a sam houston statue in houston would be taken down. From the times of the civil war and confederacy. Those flags flying are vanguard, a little in charlottesville. You see the posters. The posters put all over some universities, trying to, again, recruit people. But what was interesting about this particular situation, this protest is that there were two parts of it. There were these guys youre e seeing there, neonazi racist group and another part of the group that said, we dont want you to be a part of us. We are alt right or alt light, if you will. We dont believe in your extremist views. We do want to save or confederate statues and so they pushed out this group here pushed out the White Supremacists and said we dont want you around. There is a schism happening in the alt right. Some people have very deeply racist and neonazi views and some hell say, look, were just worried about globalism and are nonviolent. Theres a schism and fight happening within the alt right. Wolf . Sara sidner, excellent reporting as you always do. Thank you very, very much. Grief and shock in charlottesville, virginia, today after a car plowed into crowd during a whisupremacist rally counterrally. A few of the front pages of newspapers from around the country. One, a day of death. Another terror in virginia. Joining us to discuss, julia sell itser and president ial historian tim neftali. How his this han handled oever the years . The gop has to think hard about its ideology, its identity. It appears there are members of College Republican groups that were marching with the White Supremacists. May have been among them or with the neonazis. The question is the future of the gop. That makes this an extraordinarily important moment. Its also a painful moment. One of those moments when we seek from our leaders a sense that we need to heal. We want words of healing. Those we didnt get yesterday. Among many reasons why President Trumps statement was considered so lacking. It was that he didnt really lead us towards healing, because he refused to face facts about the nature of the challenge to American Civilization that happened in charlottesville. As you know, julia, the president criticized some people are comparing this to former president obamas reaction when he tweeted a Nelson Mandela quote, no one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin or background or religion. People must learn to hate. If they can learn to hate they can be taught to love for love comes more naturally to the human heart. How do you compare these reactions . There is no comparison. Barack obama, the first africanamerican president spending a lot of Time Campaign frg social justice, for racial justice, making this statement is very different than the president of the United States who has had this ongoing criticism of failing to take strong words or use strong words about the altright and White Nationalist groups that have supported him. Him not saying anything is very different. I think back to Lyndon Johnson who saw white extremists and Police Attack africanamericans in march of 1965 marching for Voting Rights and he delivered a powerful speech to congress not only he said this is wrong but put himself on the side of the civil rights protesters. Our contributor of the new yorker magazine, he said and i am quoting him, he said today is by far the most disgraceful day of Donald Trumps presidency. What is your reaction . What is your thought . Well, my thought is that it was a disgraceful day for our country, but i would like to be hopeful. I would like to focus on the great words of people like senator orin hatch and senator marco rubio and senator brown from two parties who responded the way americans come to expect their leaders to spontrespond. I think the great test now is the extent to which other leaders, leaders of our faith communities, leaders in congress, leaders in business respond in this vacuum created by the absence of more leadership from donald trump. We dont have to wait for our president. In fact, i doubt he will say what everyone would like him to say. We are americans anyway. We dont need the president to say the right thing if he is incapable of it. We can all say the right thing. What im looking for in the next few days is the extent to which a lot of other leaders just step up from both parties or from no party and show what american spirit is and the fact that for most of us White Supremacy and neo naziism is not right. In contrast to her father, ivanka trumps response was very direct. She tweeted this. There should be no place in society for racism, White Supremacy. We must all come together as americans and be one country. Im surprised that the president hasnt simply retweeted his own daughters tweet. That would be so simple for him to do so. He retweets a lot of stuff. He doesnt retweet that Important Message from his own daughter. The last few hours will be remembered for the silences from President Trump whether its his decision not to retweet very strong message from his daughter, whether it is his decision not to use the words that everyone is waiting for him to say and whether it is ongoing reluctance to forcefully separate himself from white extremism. That is the silence that we are hearing. This is not a president who is silent. He attacks television hosts. He has gotten us in a very heated situation with north korea because of his tweets. If he doesnt Say Something i think we have to assume there is a logic to it. That silence is what we are discussing right now. You would think it would be personal for the president. His daughter is jewish. His soninlaw Jared Kushner is jewish. His grandchildren are jewish. You would think he would have a natural instinct as father and grandfather to condemn it. I have a hard time addressing that question without being emotional. I dont know what to say. I do not understand how it takes any courage whatsoever in 2017 to be antineo nazi. I dont understand it. But i think that is an issue between the president and his god. I dont know what is motivating him. I will say this, though, it is unconscionable that we have a president at this point who is so concerned about ever being in the wrong that he doesnt correct himself. You notice with north korea he doubled down. He said fire and fury again even though people in the state department and the Defense Department had to clean up that phrase. The president is someone we have seen who does not want to correct himself, does not want to ever be in the wrong and sure as heck doesnt want tolisten to pundits. I dont anticipate him changing the rhetoric he uses which is a darn shame. I wished and i had hoped that he would think twice about a way in which he has responded to the antisemitism among other things and racism that was implicit and explicit in charlottesville. You know you have to stop waiting and realize you move on and realize there is a moral vacuum in the white house. He does have a chance.
