Senator ted cruz will be standing right next to him, that is a first for ted cruz. Neurosurgeon ben carson left of trump, new Jersey Governor Chris Christie will be back in the time time debate, he was in the undercard last time around. Also on the main stage, john kasich, jill carroll, marco rubio and rand paul. George pataki, Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum and senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina at the 6 00 debate. One night tuesday here at the venetian. Joining me david shallian, cnn politics executive editor mark preston and ron brownsteen. David, i start with you. We now know the lineup. We know who will be on that main stage, a lot of story lines. A lot of storylines but probably no story line more important than this is the first debate after paris, after San Bernardino. The Political Landscape has shifted since all of these folks gathered on their last debate stage so now this is an opportunity to present their plans, their vision as commander in chief, what it would be for them to be sitting in the big desk in the oval office and to give that sense to republican primary voters. The focus tuesday night will be National Security. It will be these issues that have been thrust into the spotlight, and mark preston, aside from the narrative in terms of the storyline theres also the people who will be up there, ted cruz moving ever closer to the center of that stage. Ever closer and something, if you were talking to his campaign over the past few months they said this was their strategy, theyd slowly build support specifically in the state of iowa and we saw a poll come out of iowa last night that showed he is now eclipsing donald trump on that stage which frustrated trch trmp donald trump which we have known. All republicans on the stage but different visions how to deal with Foreign Policy issues, National Security issues, specifically when it comes to the middle east so, i think what well see in a couple of days on the stage at the venetian, well see them lay out their plans. The question is, can they sell it enough to primary voters that will help propel them to victory in iowa, New Hampshire and onward. You said they have different ideas and notions. No candidate has more different ideas in National Security than rand paul. There was some thought he might not make the main stage. He did. He will be there tuesday night. Thats a big deal for him and also a big deal for the rest of the candidates who now i think have something to discuss in opposition to this. Right, and pauls moment i think really closed as the threat of isis grew. Paul was really a creature of a republican period, theyre reassessing Foreign Policy, he reflected on the domestic and International Appeal that seemed to be striking a cord in the Republican Base as well. As the terrorist issue resurfaced over the last several years it narrowed his options. Youll see physically what the polls have been telling us. You have a top tier in this race. Every National Poll i believe since november 1st the top four candidates have been trump, cruz, carson and rubio in some order and with carson clearly slipping in that, to the point where i think many people believe you now have a big three in the race, trump, cruz and rubio, each appealing to different demographic pieces of the party, each with a different geographic path as a result toward the nomination. Rubios position less secure than the other two i think but youll see on the debate not only a new debate about Foreign Policy but new alignment in the race. You said big three. One month ago ben carson was leading in many National Polls. He has slipped out. We talked about the first Republican Debate back in august, who were the candidates stabbing next to donald trump . Jeb bush and scott walker. Scott walker, who is no longer here. David, i want to talk about the donald trump ted cruz phenomena, how theyll go after each other. We got a little bit of a preview on state of the union where donald trump was talking about ted cruz. Lets listen. Why should voters go for you over ted cruz . Because im more capable, because i have a much better temperament, because i actually get along with people much better than he does. People dont know that about me. I have a great relationship with people. In fact, i was criticized at the beginning because i get along with democrats and liberals answer republicans and conservatives, i get along with everybody. I like him. Hes been so nice to me. I could say anything and he would say i agree, i agree, but i think the time will come to an end pretty soon it sounds like. Really interesting, david, that donald trump there is saying the reason to vote for him and not ted cruz is temperament and i get along with people. Ted cruz, there are not a people in washington who get along with him but if you look at the dez moipz register poll he has the best on field favorable ratings. He rates best among having the right kind of temperament that Iowa Republican caucus goers want to see it so its not an argument. That argument donald trump is making is not one the electorate in iowa critical to take cruzs success is not one theyre buying right now. See if donald trump spends the next 50 days somehow trying to alter that. What were seeing from ted cruz in iowa is necessary but not sufficient to really make a push for the nomination. He moved to the lead in the polls particularly the Des Moines Register poll in the traditional way people have won iowa, consolidating support among evangelical christians, up to 45 of the voters. The problem in the past, whether its Mike Huckabee or Rick Santorum they each won iowa but did not win nonevangelicals in iowa and foreshadowed a problem all the way through. Neither was able to appeal beyond that evangelical base and could not become a full service threat to the nomination. The question is, can cruz do more than that, more than huckabee or santorum . Iowa was largely a road to nowhere. As they say in the wizard of oz, ted cruz has one thing the others dont have, a whole lot of money and ability to raise more and also has Tea Party Support which sometimes goes in line with evangelical. Its bigger and broader. Weve seen donald trump fend off opponents at all these debat debates. Ted cruz i think for the first time is going to take incoming here. Its not just donald trump and may not be mostly donald trump. Marco rubio, and Chris Christie, it will be interesting to see. It will be. What is interesting about ted cruz he doesnt let his emotions overcome him delivering a speech or talking about politics or policy. It will be interesting to see how he handles himself. In the past he has fended it off and just talked about how the Republican Party needs to come together, much like Chris Christie has, which has helped Chris Christie in the past few weeks. At some point you have to be critical those coming up upon you such as marco rubio and at some point he has to take on donald trump and i think well see donald trump take on ted cruz tuesday night. This is going to be ted cruzs challenge i think tuesday night. He has a needle to thread here. Hes trying to get a slice of that rand paul libertarian more isolationist kind of wing of the party or slice of the party. He wants to own that, and court that, but he wants to do it in a way that he doesnt get labeled sort of the new rand paul in the race, and that is going to be a very tricky thing, tricky line for him to walk. That slice is probably shrinking as the debate goes on. It is. So much to watch two nights from now at the venetian. Great to have you here with us. The debate airs on cnn tuesday night, the undercard at 6 00 p. M. , the big debate beginning at 8 30 p. M. Lets get back to las vegas for continuing coverage of the cnn Republican Debate. John berman is there. Hey, fred, wither outside the venetian las vegas, inside this building right behind me this is where the debate will be tuesday night, and cnn Just Announced the lineup for the final republican primary debate of 2015. Athena jones is in the debate hall and will tell us who will be on the stage at 9 00 p. M. Eastern time and the undercard at 6 00. Athena . Reporter hi, john. We know the nine candidates who made the stage for the prime time debate. We have a graphic in order, john kasich, carly fiorina, Chris Christie, ben carson, donald trump, ted cruz, jeb bush, marco rubio. Three polls showing ted cruz is leaving in the early state of iowa. In that earlier debate its going to be just four candidates, george pataki, Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum and Lindsey Graham at that earlier debate. As you mentioned this is the last debate of the year. Some might say one of the most important debates because its right before people head into the holidays, its the last chance for the candidates to make a strong impression on voters before a bit of a break over the holiday season. Millions will be watching and so of course well be watching to find out who goes after whom and who tries to have a breakthrough performance tuesday night. John . All right, athena jones inside the venetian theater. That debate will be tuesday night, athena was talking what makes this last debate of 2015 important and also the first debate since the attacks in paris, the first debate since the attacks in San Bernardino. National security will be the focus. Which candidate will make the case that he or she is the best one to keep america safe . With me now cnn political commentators van jones and ana navarro, ana a supporter of marco rubio and jeb bush. Ana, a lot has changed since the last Republican Debate, talking about paris, talking about San Bernardino, National Security really front and center in a way that it hasnt yet been in this campaign. Absolutely. I think youre going to see a bunch of the candidates try to make their case that they are the best. I think youre going to see donald trump do it through his usual bluster, light on facts but heavy on attitude and bluster. I think youre going to see jeb bush talk about his plan to take out isis. I think youre going to hear marco rubio, who has Foreign Policy experience, has been in the Foreign Policy committees talk about that aspect. I think youre going to see some fireworks. Youre going to see marco rubio take on ted cruz, and say youre soft on nsa and ted cruz say yeah, youre soft on immigration. Weve seen a clash of the cuban titans in the last couple of weeks going on. I think thats a very interesting dynamic, and for me, frankly, the most interesting dynamic is how is donald trump going to react to the fact that ted cruz has now taken a 21jump leap in iowa and beating him in double digits. You called donald trump and said bluster. Lot of people see strength there, which is one reason people say perhaps his numbers have gone up a little bit over the last month. One person whose numbers have gone down, van, is ben carson. Ben carson has been sliding in the polls. Some cases a lot, and he says one of the reasons is National Security. People do not necessarily see him yet as strong on National Security but today i should say on abc i think it was, he went a little bit on offense talking about National Security and ted cruz, the man now who surpassed him in the polls. Listen to what ben carson said. I spent many a night in the operating room cold sterile place with a little childs life on the line working very hard to preserve that. Thats a different kind of experience. Lots of 2 00 a. M. In the morning calls and making snap decisions on what needs to be done. One of the things i recognize is that a good ceo doesnt necessarily know everything, but he gets a lot of people around him, he has a Vice President of hr, of finance, of mergers and acquisition et cetera and uses them in an appropriate way. There is no way that i or anybody else who is running is an expert in every area. There is aknow question about that but do you know how to use the people around you . Do you have wisdom and judgment, and that is demonstrated by the life that youve led. Its hard, van, if it becomes a National Security election, if it becomes a how best to defeat isis election, its hard to go from people not trusting you on that issue to making them trust you. Also, even when he makes the case for himself that sounded more like a case for donald trump. Donald trump is a ceo. Carly is a ceo. Hes not a ceo, so he makes a good case that he has good judgment but he cannot find now a rationale for himself as commander in chief. I think its very, very bad and you see picking up a remarkable, someone as soft spoken, someone as gentle as a ben carson, you see his supporters now fleeing to a donald trump. The person who is really hurting the most though i think is rand paul. There was a moment, you could have someone like a rand paul who could say listen, the hawks got us in trouble, we have all these wars, spending all that money. Ill keep us out of wars. Suddenly that message doesnt resonate the same way. Timing is everything. If you were running a month after edward snowden, rand paul would be a different place. Its an interesting impact of the rise of isis and now the shooting. I disagree with you. Theyre not running from ben carson to donald trump. Theyre running from ben carson to ted cruz. He is the one thats being able to make the case to the evangelicals, to the social conservatives and thats where weve seen his numbers come from in iowa. On National Security ted cruz say little bit in the middle on this issue, not where rand paul is but closer to rand paul than a lot of the other candidates. Hes very well positioned because he can get enough of that rand paul support because he has stood up against overreach in terms of surveillance and at the same time hasnt gone as far as rand paul. Hes on the middle. I find him fascinating so watch. I dont agree with him on a bunch of stuff but i find him fascinating so watch and the case that hes making of being the outsider while being the insider, hes saying look im on outsider in washington. Everybody hates me which i can attest is pretty much true, but you know, im also an insider in that i actually unlike donald trump know how things work, know how the bureaucracy and agencies work. I find him fascinating to us. The princeton grad harvard law student, worked for the Bush Campaign . You elitist Ivy League School people. Last word here, it will be his coming out party, the first time people look at him in this could be a frontrunner light. Absolutely, and for iowa he is now the frontrunner and im very interested to see how donald trump spins this. Let me tell you what comes with the frontrunner status, a big fat target. As we said, scott walker once stood next to donald trump in this debate. Ana navarro, van jones great to have you here. Do not miss the cnn debate tuesday night, begins at 6 00 p. M. Eastern, the main debate at 8 30 p. M. Eastern. Cnn partnering with the Salem Radio Network. Go to salemmedia. Com. Next, donald trump once again defending his proposal to ban musliming coming into the united states. I have many friends that are muslims and i will tell you they are so happy that i did this. Tylenol®. Republican frontrunner donald trump continues to push his proposal to temporarily ban muslims from entering the united states. This is what he told jake tapper this morning on state of the union. I have many friends that are muslims and i will tell you, they are so happy that i did this, because they know they have a problem. There is a problem. Your muslim friends are happy . I have many friends at the highest level and i have partners that are muslim. I have unbelievable they support a ban on muslims entering the u. S. . No, they said its about time that somebody spoke up as to radicalism. You have radicalism in this country. Its here and its trying to come through. Meanwhile in florida, representatives from 13 muslimamerican groups gathered to argue against trumps proposal. They say isis does not represent all muslims. Joining me now from orlando is rasha mubarak, board member of the Muslim Womens organization and spoke at that meeting of Muslim Leaders yesterday. Its interesting i sit here in front of the venetian las vegas there will be a National Security debate in two nights, so much discussion about how to battle terrorism here in the united states, and abroad. What do muslimamericans do you think, what do they want to hear from this debate on tuesday . Muslimamericans want to, you know, put an end to the hysteria, put an end to the misinformation, and we hope that our candidates are able to remember that this is unconstitutional, and at the same token we hope with can he take it back to the drawing boards. America once stood on authentic and grassroots, when the candidates used to come on tv we used to question their credibility. Where are they coming up with these numbers, these statistics, these pie charts, where is the credibility . So we want to see that there is an end to this rhetoric thats putting not only muslimamericans in danger but really our National Security pause ultimately we are given what daesh and isis want to see. Who knows, theyre probably using donald trump footage to recruit new members of daesh. You know, its interesting. You know what donald trump will say here tuesday night. Hell continue to push the plan hes been pushing for a week to ban muslims from coming into the united states. How much do you need to see from the other people on stage with trump . In your mind, because you are obviously against that proposal, do these other candidates need to make a stand . Do they need to vocally say no . Absolutely. Its their choice of how they want to go down in the history books, right . So if they want the shock value and if they want their ratings to go up, they may cave in to this, you know, this rhetoric of antimuslims and islamaphobia. We hope they can stand back and take a stance, thats who we need to run the country. These are going to be our future leaders and we all follow the lead of our community leaders, our elected officials and theyre putting us in harms way and danger and really not taking into consideration the human value. Lets speak in the affirmative rather than the negative here. What do you want to see from the candidates in terms of how best to battle terror, because as your group and many groups point out frequently muslims are the most frequent victims of isis terror around the world. Muslims are the number one victims of daesh, isis or any radical extremism. The muslimamerican community has been the number one ally and rooting out terrorism radicalism, its c. A. R. E. Organizations that report any radicalism and extremism. Its Muslim Americans that have the number one leading resource of rooting out these extremism and radicalism so we need to continue to work toward that and Work Together because if were not standing together we create a division and thats what the extreme groups want to see so we have to stand together and continue working together and continue fighting and battling any kind of extremism or radicalism, any form. Thats with muslims and with planned parenthood, thats anywhere, we see it everywhere and need to Work Together and have this dialogue. As an Electoral Group as a voting group, where do you see your greatest influence . I think our greatest influence is, you know, standing united and actually speaking as one voice, and you know, we have to understand that these Muslim Americans are doctors, engineers, in your workforce, theyre everywhere, theyre your neighbors. These are people that are waking up sunday morning and feeding the homeless, so this is what essentially it creates this dialogue taken has this influence, so we know that as Muslim Americans the influence is there. Its not a question of whether or not were a fabric of this nation, but its whether or not our elected officials are choosing to acknowledge that. To acnoonlg this influence that we have. We come in numbers. Rasha great to have you with us today. We are talking about politics and National Security, the debate two nights from now, thanks very much. Well be right back. I talked to one sandy hook mother dedicated to making schools across the country safer. When you walk down a School Hallway what does this feel like . Especially at this time of the year seeing some of the winter decorations, and classroom doors and it just, schools always have a very similar feel, look and feel wherever you go. Reporter thats because nicole hawkleys 6yearold son, dylan, was among 26 killed in an unspeakable massacre at connecticuts sandy hook elementary school. I can picture dylan running through the halls, and thats hard. And seeing kids especially the age that he should be now. Reporter he would be 9 now, in the fourth grade. Hawkley says her memory of what happened on december 14, 2012, is still incredibly vivid, as is the last time she was in Sandy Hook School. My husband and i went back and we walked the halls, and i was able to spend some time where his body was found, and i left behind two purple butterflies, one for him and one for ann marie, his special education teacher, to just try to connect with them in some way. Reporter today thats where you guys are going to make a difference. Reporter hawkley digs deep, connecting with lots of children at dozens of schools across the country. What can we do to help our school . For me, wanting to provide a legacy for dylan and honor his life, and also you know, protect the lives of those who survived, including my older son, jake, and give them something a positive future to look forward to. Thats why ive thrown myself into this issue, in how do we get ahead of violence, and stop it before it starts. Turning her pain into a promise, that all schools should be, can be safe, not later through legislative policy or stepped up security, but now, through personal responsibility. Hawkley and other sandy hook families founded the Group Sandy Hook promise to help each other heal and provide training for both adults and young people on how to detect and help prevent gun violence. Teaching kids how to learn the signs of someone who might be at risk such as drastic changes in behavior, drastic changes in actions, those are all things that can be anyone who is suffering from any potential crisis and get that person help. Theres a very small nexus that leads to gun violence but its really about helping everyone. Reporter Sandy Hook Promise issued a challenge to schools nationwide to come up with their own approach. Students at this Oklahoma High School were so moved, they launched their own Say Something campaign. With signs, bracelets, and this Say Something to me, i promise i wont judge.
