Because we are stopped a lot. You are being asked for autographs though. Yes. And it is odd though . Well with, yes. But it is pretty cool . Yes. Hello, again. Good afternoon, it is 2 00 here in the east. Im anaka brar ana cabrera in for fredricka whitfield. Right now, the u. S. Is gathering information for a intelligence review. And right now, anna is there in one of the strongholds, and what are you learning about the options in syria as well as iraq . Well, ana, no denying that the tone and the rhetoric coming out of the white house has changed significantly since the horrific murder of journalist james foley. We are hearing it from the top senior obama officials that the murder of foley is the equ equivalent of terrorist attack on america, and that it is a r terrorist organization that we have never seen before. They are laying the groundwork and the argument for why the u. S. Needs to go into syria, and launch those air strikes. And the reason being is that syria is a safe haven, and a sanctuary for the isis militants currently operating here in iraq. They have crossed the borders and they go back into syria, and the u. S. Can conduct as many air strikes as they would like here in iraq, but at the end of the day, the militants will move back into syria, we heard frit jep ral dempsey the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. And we know that to defeat isis, with we have to go into syria. And with we know that president obama has been reluctant to go get involved in the syrian war, but it has claimed the lives of some 300,000 people, but this is no longer about syria and iraq, but it is now about america, because these isis militants are going after american citizens, and we know from the horrific video that we saw that they are threatening to execute a second journalist, steven sotloff, if the air strikes continue. I want to bring in a cnn analyst who is joining me from washington, peter bergen, and talk about this. Peter, cut to the chase, how big of a threat is isis to us here on u. S. Soil . Well, i am skeptical of the claims that isis is a threat to the United States directly. Obviously, a threat to the americans in region, and american diplomatic facilities potentially, but we have only seen a limited number of americans go to syria. Some of them have joined isis or tried to, but it is not clear that any of those folks have come back and planned terrorist attacks in the United States at all. There are of course larger number of europeans who have gone, and that is certainly a big issue potentially for europe and they could come to the ud, but it is a could and not a definite. And so on the issue of the strikes in syria, there is a lot of problems associated with carrying out the strikes in syria from the sort of Legal International law perspective. I think that the president would at a minimum have to seek congressional approval, and after all, this is a kcountry which ist not unlike iraq where the government is asking for u. S. Military strikes, and the Syrian Government is certainly not asking for this, and as a matter of international law, you would have a u. N. Mandate or even potentially a nato operation, neither of which are likely to happen at present which leaves you really with the congressional authorization, and i think that the president is actually temperamentally like to go back to congress if such strikes were to happen in any serious way. Right. So we might see the escalation of the response to the situation there. Im curious, as you mentioned that there are more westerners joining isis, and that europeans perhaps have a bigger threat currently than the u. S. Given ice isiss location, and what makes their recruiting so successful . Well, nothing breeds success like success. So if you were a jihadist for the military, you would go to the al qaeda group, and today, you go the isis, because they control more territory more than any al qaedalike group in its his are the aleppo to western syria to gates of baghdad in the east which is about 450 miles across. And you know, they have a pretty effective social media campaign. And if you are somebody who is influence ed influenced by this ideology there, the group that you want to join right now. Some four years ago, some people may have been tempted to join is a baath which controlled somalia at this time, so isis is flavor du jour and the most inarguably most success nfl the modern era. We have been seeing the air strikes that the u. S. Has been doing in iraq, and actually doing something to isis to push them away from the dam there in mosul. I wonder if your take, just to get your take the on all of this, and the air strikes and the boots on the ground, what does it take to stop isis . Well, it is a political question as much as a military question. I mean, there is no constituency in the United States for a Ground Invasion of iraq. Air strikes, you know, they are effective. They are not going to destroy isis, but the fact is that isis can no longer function as a conventional army driving tanks down highways, because it has to function more of an insurgent Terror Strike group in the way it is functioning in the past. So the air strikes are effective, but they are not, you know, decisive. But there is very little appetite in the United States for major ground operations in iraq. All right. Peter bergen, thank you for your time. Thank you. And now over to ferguson, missouri, where rallies supporting Michael Brown and officer Darrell Wilson are happening today. The organization to support officer wilson joined us here on cnn and says that other supporters have received death threat threats and they believe that wilson is justified in the action, and as the facts come out, it is going to be evident. It has been two weeks since officer wilson shot and killed unarmed Michael Brown in ferguson, missouri. In an hour naacp youth march is expected to start in ferguson supporting the brown family. One man has a unique perspective on isis and the recruitment of young men and women from the United States or europe. A and now he risked his life to save his 18yearold from Al Qaedalinked militants in syria, and now he is helping other western fathers to bring home sons who joined isis. He is in syria right now doing just that. Reporter as a teenager, this young man danced in the music video, but within a year, he went from this to this. A young muslim convert preaching into the streets of antwerp. He started to become very religious, and praying and not wearing other clothes right away, but the robes, and we saw the science of radicalization. Reporter he said he was going to study in cairo, but wen he missed his sisters birthday, his father knew that he was actually in syria. That day, no phone call, that day, knew that 100 something is going wrong. Reporter and so he began to search the internet for any sign of his son. Is discovered a video from the television station, and inside of the video, i see friends of him from the radical muslim civilization, and they speak the language of antwerp, an when i saw that, i knew that my son is there. Reporter against the advice of police and his lawyer, he decided to go after him himself. He kept a video diary a that he gave to cnn. His search began in the north of syria with the lawyers in aleppo. Your son, he says he does not want to leave. Reporter and his video, he seems to sympathize with them, and trying on the weapon, but also capturing extraordinary moments as a jihadi fighter sits down the play the piano, and something that changed his views. Well, it is something that i hear about people who cannot live in piece, but i changed my mind. Why . Because i have been to syria and met so many muslim fight in groups and people with al qaeda and terrorists, and im not muslim and if you see what they have done for me, and food and search for me everywhere. Reporter but he did not succeed at first. It took nearly a year and two trips before he could track down his son. He said he found him months later with al ja bbab el nusra. And they thought i was with the cia and they finally het me go. And i saw my son. Reporter what was that like . I cried. I never did that before when he was miss, but the First Contact i held him, and it is like parents who get to hold their children who have passed away. Reporter he has been barred from speaking to the press, and he is also facing charges of recruiting jihadists to fight in syr syria. And his father says that his son is innocent, but it is ease is si to see where where he gets the taste for adventure, and perhaps a sense of inflated own importance. They respect me, because for them, it was amazing, amazing a a fellow from the west who is not a muslim tried to risk h his life to come to a war country to look for his own son as a son who is one of them who had become a mujahadine, and so i was a hero for them. Reporter hero or adventure or lost child or jihadi, and many questions understand answered, and like father, like son. What a parent will do for their children. The siblings of the american journalist who was executed at the hands of terrorist group isis, they are speaking up for the First Time Since his death. Isis posted a online video of james foleys execution earlier this week, a and now his brother and sister sat down with katy curic, and they are talking about how committed he was. And jim was so committed to journ journalism, and these situations of giving a voice to the voiceless. I with was so interested in his life. He joined teach for america, and got an m. A. At a amherst and decided to go to pursue journalism when he went to madill to get a masters degree. What drove him to the profession do you believe . Well, actually, the perfect mix of his interests. He cares deeply about the people, and particularly the disadvantaged and taught in inner city phoenix for years and made some relationships and shaped some lives there. And he taught in a kocounty jai in chicago for several years, and he loved to write. He always loved to write. He loved photography, and, you know, i think that combination was a natural one. Lets go back if we could to thanksgiving day 2012 when you both heard that jim had been kidnapped while working for the global post in syria, and michael and katy, you must have been sick with worry to hear that news. Yes. Yeah. Yes. I was fortunate enough to work at the hospital thanksgiving, and i was up that morning and i got a skype alert and i opened up the computer, and it was jim, and he was just talking to me, and i had told him happy thanksgiving, and he was like, it is thanksgiving over there, and i said, yes, it is thanksgiving. I just wanted to let you know that we all love you, a id went off to work and you know the rest of the story. And jim was at an internet cafe, so you were probably, certainly, the last person in our family to talk to him. Yes, and so i feel very honored and you know, it is special that i was at least able to say that before he was taken. And michael, this is not the first time that your brother had been kidnapped . No. No, it wasnt, katy. He was detaped for Something Like 40 days in libya, and we worked day and night to get him released. I will never forget meeting him in tunisia and flying him and claire home. Yep. And just the thrill of the moment, and a lot of us were really initially angered when jim went back, back to libya, and he was on site when he covered khadafys fall, and we were angered when he went back to libya to look for antons body, the deceased colleague who was killed when they were captured, and the same with his time in syria, but over time, we have lerped to understand why and how, how brave he was and how important what he did or was to the world. I want to bring you up to speed on some rough weather developing off of the east coast in the atlantic so bring in meteorologist jennifer gray. Fill us in, what is happening n now . Well, the Hurricane Hunters have been out in the system for much of the day. It is not a tropical system yet, and it does not have the low Level Circulation which it needs to become a tropical system. Still a tropical wave out there, depression or the Tropical Storm later today or tomorrow. Still 80 chance of developing in the next 48 hours, but it has dumped at lot of very heavy rain across purt ree ecerto rico and dominican, and it is past the turks and caicos, and the ba a hamas, and because of the close proximity to the bahamas and the southeastern u. S. , it is a definite concern to us, and that is why we are focused on it. Of course, we are e fr are focu where it is headed next. From the computer models, the confidence is very, very low. There is a huge uncertainty of where the system is going to go over the next couple of days. The computer models take it from anywhere east of the u. S. All of the way into the gulf of mexico, and that is why the confidence is staying very low. A lot of different scenarios of where this could head. It could keep heading up to the north, and picked up by the jet stream, and stay off shore. It could also slow down a little bit, skirt the u. S. And impact portions of the southeastern portions of the u. S. It could also stay on the western track, that southwestern track, and head into the gulf of mexico which is the least likely scenario, but of course, it is something that we will watch over the next couple of days, ana, because it is so close to the southernb tip of florida, we only have a couple of days to watch before any possible impacts of things such as high surf and rip currents. It is something that we will be watching over the next couple of days so stay tuned to cnn. Okay. We will keep the fingers crossed that everybody stays safe. And we will have cnn money up next with jim sciutto. Thank you for spending part of your weekend with us. More bloodshed in israel and gaza and a stalemate in ukraine and the gruesome murder of a american journalist, and it looks like the world is falling apart, but there is a part of the u. S.
