Search has expanded, that donald trump asked for more names to be added to that list, but it does still seem he is inching towards making a final decision. Trump transition advisers saying that decision could come soon. Potentially as early as next week, potentially an announcement early next week. I thought it was notable in that interview with Kellyanne Conway this morning on new day that she really ticked through a long laundry list of names, these people that donald trump is considering for the job, really trying to project that he is being very deliberate with this decision, making sure to talk to a wide variety of people, so certainly something transition officials this morning are trying to emphasize. Today, this is not trumps only focus. He will be hitting the road for the majority of the day. First he will be traveling very shortly to louisiana to attend a get out the vote rally from the Republican Party there, and then it is onward to michigan. This is his last stop for his big thank you victory tour that hes been having, these Campaign Style rallies. Sunlen serfaty live from washington, thank you. A union boss in indiana says hes been receiving Death Threats after calling donald trump a liar. Chuck jones says the president elect inflated the number of jobs saved at a carrier plant but in a News Conference that just wrapped up in the last hour, i would say, he extends an olive branch. Cnns Martin Savidge live in indianapolis with more. Good morning. Reporter good morning. According to bernie sanders, chuck jones is now the most famous union leader in all of the United States. That as a result of the tweets that have come, the negative ones, from donald trump to his 16. 9 million i believe it is twitter followers. Chuck jones wasnt backing down from his initial comments holding the president elect accountable for numbers he said were initially inaccurate but he also said he is grateful to donald trump that he was able to save 800 jobs. Chuck jones has always said that. Then he said he would love to work with the president elect. Heres what was said. If he somehow, some way reached out to me today, tomorrow, next week, next month, and said hey, what can you guys, the Steel Workers here, do and work with me to try to save these jobs at rexnord, carrier and utech in huntington, we would be glad to sit down with the man. We are all going to disagree on Different Things and if trump is sincere about keeping jobs in the country and you guys heard him numerous times, thats what his goal is, well sit down, well work out something. Keep the jobs here. Reporter chuck jones is a very Popular Union leader here in this part of indiana. Local 1999 was founded in 1998, go figure, but he has been the only president of this local they have ever had, repeatedly voted in over and over for a threeyear term. Lastly, the reason he had this press conference, there have been so many people wanting to get an interview with him in light of how trump tweeted about him that they felt this was the best way to handle all of the demands. A real david and goliath situation that came out of this. Also during that News Conference chuck jones held, he mentioned another Company Planning to move 300 jobs to mexico. Reporter right. He actually started working at that job before he got elected to being the union leader. Thats rexnord. Its only about a mile away from the carrier plant. It was just back in october that all of the employees were told there shortly after carrier made its announcement that they, too, were going to lose their jobs because that plant is moving to exactly the same place, monterrey, mexico. Its not just ending there. As they point out, donald trump may have saved 800 jobs at carrier, but there are still 2100 other jobs right now that are slated to leave this state alone in the next year or so. Martin savidge reporting live from indianapolis this morning. Lets talk about that and more. With me is andre bower, former Lieutenant Governor of south carolina, david louder, Washington Bureau chief of the Los Angeles Times and abby phillips, political reporter for the washington post. Welcome to all of you. Andre, i will start with you. Chuck jones said he would gladly sit down with mr. Trump and talk about how they both can Work Together to save jobs in america. Do you think thats possible . I think its highly possible. We have already seen him demonstrate this with the carrier deal. What you are seeing is a renaissance of the American Worker we havent seen it demonstrated with chuck jones, though. Im talking about the union guy, chuck jones. You have seen donald trump sit down with some of his biggest adversaries, people who criticized him and did everything they could not to see him elected as president. He sat down with them, shown them an olive branch and is even considering them or actually, when you look at someone like nikki haley who was opposed to him, hes already given her an unbelievable post. He is actually doing what he said he would do, bringing america together. David . Do you think he would . Well, he might. What we have seen with the president elect so far is an interesting contrast. Hes been making very conciliatory statements on the one hand, sometimes, and then he will attack people on twitter other times. So its sort of a Good Cop Bad Cop routine in which he gets to play both cops. That keeps people off balance and tactically it probably works for him. But whether it works over the long run, thats another question. So far, the polling indicates that a lot of americans are still very doubtful about mr. Trump. There was a poll yesterday that said 80 of americans think he needs to be more careful about how he tweets, what he says. On the other hand, there is drew greenblatt who owns a small Manufacturing Business in maryland, he met with mike pence and talked about exactly how mr. Trump and mr. Pence saved carrier. Heres what he said to me last hour. He mentioned three things, repeal obamacare, number two, roll back regulations that add no value, that dont clean the environment, that dont improve the livelihoods of employees, and lastly, tax reform. Because if we have a new tax reform system, all of a sudden we will be competitive. It makes no sense to move to mexico. We got to change it so that everybody says of course im going to make it in america because if i make it in america, i will save money. So hes very psyched, right, really happy, but he owns a company and chuck jones is a union guy, so is that the difference or is it just because chuck jones called donald trump a liar . Well, i think on some level, you know, what Business Owners are experiencing right now is the potential for a Republican Administration to implement republican policies, namely cutting down on regulations, cutting taxes and so on and so forth. So that has had beyond just Small Businesses but broadly in the economy, an effect of inserting some optimism in markets and in Business Leaders. Well see what actually ends up happening, but for workers, the calculus is pretty simple. Do i have my job or do i not have my job. Its actually very difficult for the Trump Administration to sort of make broad sweeping claims about keeping jobs in the United States because as you pointed out, even while carriers keeping some 800 jobs in america, a plant down the street is shipping 300 more jobs to mexico so you cant necessarily take a company by Company Approach to save every single job. I think as long as thats the case, you are going to have employees who are disappointed in the process and this is something that well have to watch play out as donald trump makes these promises. Some people are still going to lose their jobs. What is going to be the balance between the number whose jobs are saved and the number whose jobs continue to be shipped overseas due to Global Economic forces out there. I think some people are worried about the quality of jobs, too, because of mr. Trumps pick for labor secretary, mr. Puzder, the ceo of hardees and carls jr. He opposes the minimum wage hike, opposes overtime for fulltime workers and criticizes sick leave. When people hear that, they may think well, does he just want us to work at low wage jobs and thats it and the company reaps all the benefits . You saw carrier, those are not low wage jobs in any way. I think the lowest paying job at carrier was 14 an hour, the next tier went over 15 an hour, then you look at the different other positions that paid way over 50,000 a year. Its incredible he was able to save those jobs. He has not even been sworn into office yet. Hes assembling a group of Business Leaders and u. S. Leaders that are known around the world and these are going to unleash an economic engine that people havent seen for decades in this country. You have got a businessman thats going to be back at the helm that understands how tough it is just like i do in my business, what regulation impedes growing jobs. We continue to see whether it be from an epa level, from a tax level, theres a multitude of things that continue to make folks decide to move those jobs overseas and we have immediately seen a president elect who has turned that around and surrounded himself with Business Leaders who have actually gotten something done, havent just talked about it. But see, i think some people might think we are talking like the economy is in the tank. It is not. It is for some people, im not denying that, but the country is going along pretty good and i dont see bigtime ceos losing much money or companies suffering or big banks suffering, either. Thats right. The Unemployment Rate now is quite low by historical standards and but part of the problem, a big part of the problem is that manufacturing these days doesnt need nearly as many workers as it used to require. So president elect can adopt new policies that could spur manufacturing in the country, perhaps, but that doesnt necessarily mean a big burst of new jobs. A lot of steel plants, for example, or auto plants, they are highly automated these days. A lot of the work that used to be done by manual workers is now done by robots. The nature of manufacturing has changed and that creates a problem for people whose jobs are based on manual labor. Theres not a whole lot that donald trump or even highly skilled Business People who he may select for his cabinet can do to change that basic reality. Because we live in a castleless society, right . The name much the game is to make money. Yeah. I think to some extent we have to the question before us here is to what extent is giving incentives to corporations lowering their Regulatory Burden and maybe their tax burden going to have a positive impact on their workers. We dont actually really know the answer to that yet, because of some of the forces that david just mentioned that many of these companies, not just Manufacturing Companies but Fast Food Companies and so on and so forth, are moving toward automated systems. They are moving away from humans and toward robots. The question remains what is the Trump Administrations plan for dealing with the need to equip workers by and large with new skills so they can compete in a new economy versus just promising that the old jobs of an old economy are going to remain which i think we all know in the long term is probably not going to happen. We had a great meeting to talk about our transition. We are very excited about getting to work and hitting the ground running in 2017 to put this country back on track. Speaker of the house paul ryan just met with president elect donald trump at trump tower. Republicans and democrats could be headed for a showdown over the spending bill. In a high stakes gamble, democrats are threatening to block the measure if their demands are not met. At issue, extending an expiring Health Insurance program for retired miners and their spouses. Cnn senior political reporter manu raju has more. Good morning. Reporter good morning. Exactly. Thats exactly the point. They are fighting right now, how to extend that expiring Health Insurance program for coal miners. In this proposal, this bill, this mustpass spending bill that has to be passed by the end of the night to avoid a shutdown it includes a fourmonth extension of that program. What the democrats want is a yearlong extension. They are demanding action. The problem is that the house is already gone for the year so theres really no choice but to pass this bill or block it and lead to a Government Shutdown. These democrats from coal mining states are pushing very hard for this, including senator joe manchin who had strong words last night. We are asking for the permanent fix for the miners extension. We have been even willing to negotiate. We have even negotiated down, one year, give us one year to fight another day. Four months doesnt do a thing. One year gets us to fight another day. Four months doesnt do a thing. But theres no reason why we cant do the permanent fix. No reason whatsoever. Reporter now, joe manchin is purportedly under consideration for a position within Donald Trumps cabinet. They are supposed to meet today. Actually, that was re scheduled for a monday meeting so im sure this issue will come up. They need a more immediate resolution to avoid the shutdown tonight. Minutes ago, Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell came to the floor. He too comes from a coal mining state. He said i want a yearlong extension just like the democrats but theres a fourmonth extension in this bill. Lets deal with this next year and avoid a shutdown. The two sides are staring at each other. We will see which side blinks first. Manu raju live for us this morning, thank you. Have you checked your 401 k lately . You might want to. For a little bit of good news. Excitement about what a donald Trump Presidency might mean for the economy has sent stocks on wall street to record highs. This morning the dow nearing a major milestone closing in on 20,000 for the first time in history. Cnn Business Correspondent alison kosik has more. This is an incredible way to end the year when you look at how stocks are doing. You look at how close right now the dow is to 20,000. Its less than 400 points away. But even more incredible is how fast it got there. Look at this. Just a week before election day, we saw the dow below 18,000. Earlier this year when we saw oil prices crash, we saw the dow below 16,000. So this has happened really really quickly. Just about every area of the market is feeling this trump bump. Shes turned up to bid senator harry reid goodbye. Hes retiring. But she didnt stop at goodbye. This is not exactly the speech at the capitol i hoped to be giving after the election, but after a few weeks of taking selfies in the woods, i thought it would be a good idea to come out. Clinton also posed for selfies with some sobbing admirers, proving she still has quite a fan base and a voice in american culture. After all, its not just trump who was being parodied on saturday night live. With me is douglas brinkley, cnn president ial historian. Hi, douglas. How you doing . Im good. So is it unusual for someone who has lost an election to pop up and give speeches . This is i think Hillary Clintons second one. Its not that unusual. After all, sometimes you have people that are stepping out of power. Harry reids been her great friend and ally for so long, for virtually decades, that she really needed to make an appearance there and im sure it meant a lot to senator reid that she did it. Also, you have got to kind of slowly come out from the woods, as she put it, and im waiting for her to do the Anderson Cooper interview. Im waiting for her to tell us what it was like on election night. We still dont know how she got the news that donald trump had won and as historians, we like to reconstruct that evening because conventional wisdom was that she had this in the bag. We would like to hear her story and hopefully it will be coming out in the next few weeks. It would be fascinating. Clinton went to capitol hill for that speech. She was surrounded by her embattled aid, huma abedin and john podesta, whose emails were leaked, right, then she talked about the dangers of fake news. Listen. The epidemic of malicious fake news and false propaganda that flooded social media over the past year, its now clear that socalled fake news can have real world consequences. This isnt about politics or partisanship. Lives are at risk. Lives of ordinary people just trying to go about their days, to do their jobs, contribute to their communities. Its a danger that must be addressed and addressed quickly. You know, fake news is a problem, big problem, and it can be dangerous, but i kind of found it interesting that Hillary Clinton chose that to talk about. Well, its a way of complaining about the press when you lose, its somebody elses fault. Remember, she had once went after the vast right wing conspiracy she used to call it that was after her. Now its fake news, its russian hacks, its the fbi. There are reasons why she lost, but not herself. Thats a healing process. Thats going to take awhile to be able to publicly talk about what you did wrong, why didnt you go to the state of wisconsin once to try to get voters up there. But look, its all going to happen. She still has the foundation that shes going to be running, the clinton foundation. She has secret Service Apparatus following her around. She won the popular vote in the United States. She was the first woman to ever get, seize the nomination of a Major Political party in u. S. History. Shes a large figure, casts a large shadow and i hope we see more and more of her in the coming days. She did have lunch with Dianne Feinstein and feinstein said, they were sipping chardonnay over lunch and she said mrs. Clinton was ready to take some time away from the spotlight. Will that be hard for her, you think . Shes been fairly effective since election. Shes just not going to be out there giving speeches, stumping around the country anymore. But look, strange things happen after you lose. Bob dole lost to bill clinton, went on and did viagra television ads. In russia when gorbachev tumbled he did pizza hut commercials. We never know how people will emerge in a year or two because money is very big in the United States and Hillary Clinton now will be on the top of peoples list of speaking. Im sure Book Companies are offering her 10 million deals to tell a story about the age of trump. So anythings possible with her. Shes in good shape. She just ran a Great Campaign but lost it in the end and so has to find ways to resurrect the rest of her life and im sure she will. Theres going to still be some depression involved. Theres got to be a depressing Holiday Season still for her. Yeah. I think you got that right. Thanks for bringing the bob dole viagra commercials because i had forgotten about those. Now they are firmly implanted in my mind again. Douglas brinkley, thanks so much. For the father of one of the sandy hook victims, the fight against fake news is all too real. His name is lenny posner. His son was just 6 years old when he was shot and killed along with his classmates. He talked with Anderson Cooper about a foundation he started to target what he calls hoaxsters. They dont think anything bad ever happens. They dont think anyone ever gets hurt. They think whenever they see something on the web or on television that is a crime or mass casualty event, it has to be a hoax. Then if there is debunking evidence that comes out that shows they made mistakes, researchers, like normal researchers, they wont correct their mistakes and oftentimes, they start to fabricate their evidence or fudge their evidence or photoshop their evidence so really, they are contributing to the hoax. Earlier this week, a florida woman was charged with four fell and counts of making threats against posner because she believes the sandy hook shooting was a hoax. This is what they are leaving behind. Old town aleppo destroyed. Now human rights Officials Say some of those who are trying to flee to safety are being blocked or possibly, well, actually, they are just disappearing. Cnn Senior International correspondent Fred Pleitgen is in aleppo with more. Reporter as the rebels increasingly lose their grip on aleppo, Syrian Armed Forces continue to pound the besieged areas, many killed and wounded in the crossfire. We came to this front line crossing just as a man was being evacuated. Claiming he was shot by rebels as he tried to flee. They shot me as i was running out, he says. They didnt allow anyone to get out. They said are you going to the regime areas . The opposition strongly denies its fighters would harm civilians but the rebels do acknowledge they wont be able to hold out in aleppo much longer. And that realization is leading to an avalanche of people trying to flee the rebel districts. Syrian troops throwing some bread but not nearly enough to quell the hunger of the many who have been starving for months. And what if this happened again . I was given warfarin in the hospital, but wondered, was this the best treatment for me . So i asked my doctor. And he recommended eliquis. Eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots and reduces the risk of them happening again. Yes, eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots. Eliquis also had significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. Both made me turn around my thinking. Dont stop eliquis unless your doctor tells you to. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. If you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots. Nic robertson is following the story for us. Reporter the details we are just getting in, this man was arrested with an ak47 with two full magazine clips full of rounds. The police say in his apartment they found a large isis flag as well as full boxes full of what they describe, illegal and highly explosive fireworks. These are just the first details about this we are beginning to get. Also, the far right politician vilders known for being politically correct and often compared to donald trump has been found guilty of inciting discrimination. What can you tell us about that . Reporter yeah. The judges here found him guilty of lesser charges. He is also being tried on incitement for hatred and violence and the judges found he was innocent of those charges, charged him on the lesser charge. However, surprising quite a lot of people here, the judges decided not to fine him. Rather they said the trial enough was punishment enough. However, a lot of his supporters and the general belief here at large is he is becoming very popular here with his populist message, very much like donald trump. Any event that puts him in the news like this court case where this goes back to 2013 2014, rather, where a rally he was talking about moroccans and the crowd was shouting get them out of the country, very antiislamist message, people feel whenever he gets in the limelight that just benefits his supporters. A lot of people here comparing him to donald trump, particularly how donald trump has talked about the mexicans. This is what i found talking to a Church Minister here. Npr political reporter asma khalid joined me many times, providing analysis of what voters were thinking across the country, but i never thought how difficult that was for her until i read her reporters notebook on nprs website. She wrote in part quote, sometime in early 2016, between a trump rally in New Hampshire where a burly man shouted something at me about being muslim and a series of particularly vitriolic tweets that included some combination of raghead, terrorist bitch and jihadi, i went into my Editors Office and wept. I cried for the first but not the last time this campaign season. Through tears i told her that if i had known my sheer existence, the idea of being muslim, would be a debatable issue in the 2016 election, i would have never signed up to do this job. She joins me live now. Good morning. Good morning. So what did your editor tell you that day in her office . I wish that i could remember. You know, i just remember crying and she said to me that this was sort of early on during the primary season and she said sort of see how it goes. I go on in that essay to say that regardless of how i felt in the heat of that particular moment, i realized that i was too invested. I had been covering the campaign for months at that point and that this was the story of a lifetime as it is for many journalists and i sort of felt conflicted because while at times there were these really visceral reactions that people had towards me, towards my appearance, i also really wanted to continue covering this story. It was a story like none other that i have ever covered before. The ironic thing is you grew up in indiana. You played tennis and you sold girl scout cookies. Did it ever enter your mind that as you went, you know, as you went forward doing your job across the country that people would question your americanness . I dont think that i had ever anticipated the degree to which that would be the case. I think that i saw things in this election cycle about who we are as americans that really saddened me. Things that were said to me i had never heard before. You mentioned, im from indiana. I grew up in the midwest, went to college in the midwest, and my town was a fairly small predominantly white, fairly conservative town, and i never felt out of place at all. And i think part of it is that people knew me, people knew our family and i think when you are out on the campaign trail, a lot of times what people see maybe on First Impressions is the scarf. Thats the most visible impression that they have of you. I think the other side that people dont see is that im a hoosier. I talk about once i got to the point where i could sort of engage with voters, i think that they really did often open up because i had this tool set that i had grown up in indiana and that i understood and knew where a lot of these voters were coming from. Can you explain what one of the worst incidents were and how you handled it . I think one of the worst incidents, i should say one of the incidents that stuck with me because i had never had such a visceral reaction was about a month before the election, i was in ohio. I went to tag along with some canvassers. This is something i often did. I was covering voters, so different groups would go door to door and i would sometimes tag along to get a sense of what they were hearing. In these interactions, im kind of the silent fly on the wall. I have a microphone and a badge and i ask them if i can record but other than that, i dont say anything. I was in south columbus, predominantly White Working Class neighborhood, and a woman opened the door, she was engaging with the canvasser answering her questions but at some point her mother saw me, she opened the front door, came out on to the porch and started yelling and said you need to get off my property. She looked squarely at me and said she needs to get off my property. And in that moment, if i had been alone truthfully i think i would have said thank you and walked away but i was tagging along with the canvasser who needed to do her job. So the woman who was actually engaging with the canvasser apologized, quieted her mother and sent her inside but throughout the remainder of the canvassing interview, i could hear her mother in the background. She was still so upset i was on her front porch. I have tape of it in the background, shes saying theres a muslim on my front porch. And she was so upset viscerally. I had never experienced Something Like that where usually i say that once you sort of get to talking to people, fundamentally people start sort of seeing that you are human, im human and they trust you and they sort of see where youre coming from and i think a lot of that trust was fundamentally that i grew up in the midwest, i shared a lot of experiences. I could talk about basketball and steel mills and understood where a lot of these voters were coming from. But in that moment, First Impressions, i had never had somebody sort of viscerally hate the idea of me. So my last question to you, where do you think that hate came from and how do you reconcile it within yourself . I dont know where it came from exactly. I can sort of surmise that some of it i think is because people have impressions of a group, right, be they muslim or whatever group, and in a lot of places people havent had oneonone contact with someone, because i would say i grew up in a place where a lot of folks may not have necessarily always cared for i shouldnt say a lot, but some folks may not have cared for muslims in the abstract but they got to know me and my family. In some places where i was going, i dont think folks had ever met a muslim. I really got that hunch because it wasnt always negative. In some instances voters invited me into their homes, they wanted to invite me for the weekend to spend time with them, to have tea and cookies, because they had never had these oneonone human interactions. I mentioned one of the saddest things for me was my job covering voters was to understand where folks were coming from, to empathize with them. In some cases, people did return that empathy but at times, like when i was on that ohio porch, i dont think that voters reciprocated that empathy. I must say, it never came out in your reporting. You are a wonderful journalist and im glad that you joined me so many times during the election. Thanks so much for sharing your story. Thank you. Thank you for joining me today. Im carol costello.
