I did. Did they ask for your advice. Ive spoken to hillary and bernie at certain points during the campaign, and you know, i dont know if they ask me for advice, but i give it any way. But you know what, it was a healthy thing for the Democratic Party to have a contested primary. I thought that Bernie Sanders brought enormous energy and new ideas, and he pushed the party. And challenged them. I thought it made hillary a better candidate. I think she is whip smart. She is tough. And she deeply cares about working people and putting kids through school and making sure were growing our economy, and so my hope is that over the next couple of weeks, were able to pull things together, and what happens during primaries, you get a little ouchy. Everyone does. When hillary and i ran in 2008, you know, your staff and, you know, supporters, theyre popping off, and somebody is reading did you see that. And they start spinning stuff up. Sure. So there is a natural process of everybody recognizing that this is not about any individual, but this is about the country and the direction were going to take it and i think were going to have a Great Convention and well do well. Is bernie going to endorse hillary . Well, im sure theyre going to have a conversation. Is he ever going to drop out . He is going to stay in . Im going to be talking to him tomorrow. Hell be coming to the white house. The main role ill play in this process is to remind the American People that this is a serious job. You know, this is not reality tv. Ive seen the decisions that have to be made, and the work that has to be done. And i have a lot of confidence that if the American People are reminded of what is at stake and all the incredibly important issues that weve got to get right, theyre going to make a good choice. Thats what they usually do. Speaking of reality tv, i dont know if you saw celebrity apprentice, its a great show, has donald trump called you for advice or talked to you . First of all, youve given him pretty good advice so far if he has. Has he called and talked to you . No, he hasnt. No. Not that i know of. Do you think the republicans are happy with their choice . We are, but i dont know how that i dont know how they feel. You know what, that was too easy. But the truth is, actually i am worried about the Republican Party. And i know that sounds, you know, you know what it sounds like, but democracy works. This country works when you have two parties that are serious and trying to solve problems and they have philosophical differences and fierce debates and argue and contest elections, but at the end of the day, what you want is a healthy two party system. And you know, you want the republican nominee to be somebody who could do the job if they win. And you want folks who understand the issues, and where you can sit across the table from them and you have principled argument, and ultimately can still move the country forward. I am actually not enjoying, and i havent been enjoying watching some of the things that have happened in the Republican Party, because there are some good people in the Republican Party. There are wonderful republicans out in the country, who want whats best for the country and may disagree with me on some things, but are good, descent people. But what has happened in the party culminating in this current nomination i think is not actually good for the country as a whole. It is not saying democrats should wish for and maybe once we get through the cycle, there is some corrective action and they get back to being a center right party and Democratic Party being a center left party and we start figuring out how to work together. Was that harder for you going in as president and realizing, well, people are going to go, like, not work with me, republicans arent going to work with me . It exceeded my expectations, because when i came in, we were in the middle of crisis, and usually your hope is, all right, we can play political games, but when stuff is serious, when were losing 800,000 jobs a month, when weve got 180 troops in afghanistan, and iraq that were going to buckle down here for a second, put the politics aside and get stuff done. That did not happen. The full interview with the president eaaiear airs tonight. Reporter good morning, carol, we expect the meeting between the president and senator sanders to last about an hour, and had is the second sit down the two have had during will have had during the primary season, and the fourth time the two will have spoken in the last month. The white house says it will be a continuation of the conversation theyve had, talking about, quote, the significant issues at stake in this election, that matter most to americas working families. We expect the president to hear senator sanders out. To hear what he has to say, hear what his plans are. The clintons are very sensitive about looking leak theyre trying to push him out of the race. They feel sanders has more than earned the right to make this decision on his own. They do not want to alienate the millions and millions of enthusiastic sanders supporters that theyre going to need to help ensure that clinton wins the white house in the fall. So we expect the president to try to begin to prod sanders to accepting clinton as the democratics nominee. Thats of course, a key step on the road to party unity. Thats what this is all about. Many folks say it is a necessary stop. You have to have sanders, and all of his supporters on board. What we dont expect, carol, we dont expect for the were he is to directly ask sanders to step out of the race, simply because they dont want to upset all of those supporters. Carol. Athena, reporting live from the white house. As the democrats look to unify, theyre keeping up the pressure on donald trump. Telling cnn he needs to act more leak a president ial candidate with fewer offthecuff comments and perhaps more teleprompters. Ive ran into him at the Nra Convention a couple of weeks ago. Hey, donald, have you got a script. He pulled out of his pocket, i hate a script. It is so boring. I said put me down in favor of boring. He is now one of the two people that are going to be president of the United States of america, and he needs to begin to act leak a president ial candidate. It is not inappropriate to have thoughtful remarks, and nothing wrong with reading them. Cnns chris frates tracking all of the develops. Good morning, chris. Good morning, carol. Many republicans va long feared that the devivisive rhetoric, dn right racist, if he doesnt tone it down, he is helping to put Hillary Clinton in the white house. And while republicans scramble to respond, democrats, well, theyre pouncing. Elizabeth warren, leading trump opponent, plans to light up the billionaire in a speech later today. She plans to call trump out for suggesting that the judge hearing a lawsuit against him has a conflict of interest because of his mexican decent. Here is what she is going to say according to her prepared remarks. Donald trump is a loud, nasty, thinskinned fraud who has never risked anything for anyone, and serves nobody but himself. And that is just one of the many reasons why he will never be president of the United States. Judge curiel has survived far worst than donald trump. He survived actual assassination attempts, no problem surviving Donald Trumps nasty temper tantrums. Shell argue that the weapon of choice is racism, to appoint judges who bend to the wilf rich and powerful interests. Judge bashing to congressional efforts to Block Supreme Court pick. Shell paint trump, House Speaker paul ryan and Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell with the same broad brush, carol. All right, chris frates, reporting live from washington. Thank you. With me now, patricia murphy, david gurgen, and former president ial advisor so president s ford, reagan and nixon. He is still getting seated. Im going to pose the first question to you, patricia. Elizabeth warren is going after trump, and expected to say donald trump chose racism as his weapon but aim is exactly the same as the rest of the republicans. Pound the courts into submission to the rich and powerful. Those are harsh words, patricia. But if powerful republicans, who do call trumps remarks racist yet continue to endorse him or say theyll vote for him, rather, how can they separate themselves from Elizabeth Warrens attack . Well, you can see Republican Leadership trying to separate themselves from the words of donald trump, if not from Donald Trumps candidacy. I think that right now, his relatively short window to convince Republican Leaders and congressman in washington that he can be president ial, he can lead the party that he wont be a catastrophe for their own party. Up and down the ticket. But i think that window is closing. What are they trying to do to separate themselves. It is an awkward conversation theyre trying to have publicly saying i disavow the comments. Even paul ryan said what trump said about the judge was textbook racism, but within the same sentence, he also said but am i going to support Hillary Clinton, no, im not. She is not the solution. It is a very awkward, difficult position for these leaders. The republicans dont want to embrace this language, but they also dont want to reject and defend the 13 million trump supporter whose voted for him. He did get the most republican votes of any candidate in history. They vote Republican Voters were not una. M. Bmbiguous. Theyre worried about their own jobs, and they should be. David, you would expect trump to hit back on his attacks on him, and yet he hits back by calling her poe co hon tis poc. No, in the beginning, there was something funny about it in a phone call with a reporter. But since then, i think it has become offensive. And it is just part of a series of things that give offense to people, to voters. So i think the republicans would like him to tone everything down and the hard part is how do you remain donald trump, if youre toned down. He himself warned that if you put me on teleprompter, im going to become boring like everybody else. They put him on a teleprompter a couple of nights ago, he was good, but there were times, when indeed, he seemed to be just a little boring. Stepping back and taking a look at the bigger picture, patricia, Elizabeth Warren will give this speech tonight and go on the attack against donald trump. What is she really doing . Is she positioning herself to become Hillary Clintons running mate . I dont know. I dont know if she is angling for that. She is personally offended by donald trump. Their approach to public life, i think this is genuine for her. They see a huge opportunity, when you look at how george bush won in 2000, he did that with states in the america west, arizona, new mexico, actually just barely lost new mexico to al gore. Those are huge, growing latino populations that republicans used to win. Democrats see a gigantic electorate advantage to hammering him on these comments and any other comments he makes in the future. Well see. So president obama go ahead, david. Let me just come back to Elizabeth Warren. The boston papers here where i am are full of Elizabeth Warren stories today, and sources close to her say she is weighing, whether she were asked, she would do it. In the meantime, what she is trying do is to move toward endorsing Hillary Clinton, while also bringing the sanders voters with her. She doesnt want to walk away from them. Thats part of her base, too. Whether this election or future elections, she wants them very much. The critical thing is, she can fire up the base, and if she endorses Hillary Clinton in a very fullsome enthusiastic way, but shell do it, and i think that will help mrs. Clinton. Trump is losing support among republicans over what he said about judge curiel. He did not apologize. And he told republicans to get over it. Yet he says he can be a unifier. Is that possible . It is very, very difficult. You know, if we had a focus group in front of us right now, carol, i dont think the word unifier would ever come up as people would describe donald trump. It wouldnt be in his word cloud. He is the most unconventional candidate, really in my lifetime, in either party. He doesnt follow the usual rules. It worked for him in the primaries, but the general election is a completely different situation. He has two men who were in charge of his campaign. Paul manafort and Corey Lewandowski and sometimes trump listens to one or the other. Mr. Trump has one pr person. He chooses to market his campaign himself. Is that a wise move Going Forward . Again, very unusual. Very unorthodox. Actually, carol, i would say often, he doesnt listen to either one, or to anybody else at the senior level of his campaign. He makes his own gut decisions. Sometimes they work out. Sometimes they dont. But you know, he is facing now not 16 other republicans, many of whom were not wellfunded and didnt have big staffs. He is facing Hillary Clinton, who is a juggernaut. Clinton has approximately 700 Staff Members, ten times as many as trump. She has dozens of Communications Professionals operating on her behalf, nationally and in the key states. As far as i can tell, trump has three. Three. You know, there is a tremendous gap here, and is it impossible for him to win, given this, no, it is not impossible, but i dont think it helps him particularly. Well, but here is the thing. You know, remember when mr. Trump said he well, actually his Campaign People said he needed to raise 1 billion for his campaign, and he is now saying no, i dont need to raise that much money, because i get free publicity from all the networks any way. So why is he really saying that . Carol, yohe answers every question he is asked, but often, he is simply answering with numbers that have not been vetted through his campaign organization. He is not going to raise 1 billion. It is already obvious that many of the key financers in the Republican Party arent going to give to him at all. Theyre going to transfer their money to Republican Senate and house candidates and i think hell have a lot of problems. Clinton will probably raise that 1 billion, just like barack obama did. I dont think donald trump will come any where near that number, and again, doesnt prevent him from winning, but makes it more difficult. Donald trump and some of his Staff Members or his Campaign People are meeting with republican fundraisers today. What do you suppose that meeting will be like . I would love to be a fly on the wall. I would love to hear the comments, because many of these big donors are billionaires just like trump. So in a sense, theyre speaking as equals, and theyre just as blunt as trump is. I suspect that if they offer contributions, it is going to be with strings attached. He needs do this or that, he needs to stop doing this, needs to stop doing that. Some of it will leak out. Im sure your good reporters will find out what is being said. Im sure youre right about that. Larry sabato, a pleasure, as always. Thanks, carol. This is of course what will be a number of ways that his life will be memorialized. It will wind through louisville, tomorrow, and thousands of more will be able to see that. And then at 2 00, there will be that very public memorial service. Tickets are gone for that one. They disappeared, 14,000 of them, in less than an hour. Carol. Wow, i hear there has been talk about ticket scalping. There has. I mean, its unimaginable, the celebration that this is. The tickets are free. Free to any and all, and they continue to be free for those who want to attend this service. Apparently for that memorial service, theyve been tracking online and those that are trying to sell them, an act they say is deplorable and they will find out who these people are, and they are warning them, the law will come down against them. Reporter a story, this has become, and this letter, man, its going to heat things up even more. You know, despite being found guilty, it seems pretty clear that when you read it that brock turner, you know, he is not acknowledging that he assaulted this victim. He said whatever happened was consensual. At the same time, though, he does seem to express a little remorse, but says his actions were the result of too much alcohol and the Party Culture on college campuses. One of the things he says is, quote, i would give anything to change what happened that night, i made a mistake. I drank too much. My decisions hurt someone. Ive been shattered by the Party Culture and risk taking behaviors that i briefly experienced in my four months at school. Now, carol, in that same letter, turner also prevents somebody as i guess somebody who is naive, from ohio, a small town, inexperienced when it comes to alcohol and drugs, but according to a source close to the investigation, really important, weve learned that Text Messages and photos on turn ters cell phone indicate that he did in fact use alcohol, drugs in high school. Even a reference to acid. Now, as you can imagine, the story has become the dominant topic of conversation on the stanford campus. Ive talked to several students, and they all felt the sentence was ridiculous. I was really disgusted, because there is a unanimous jury, witnesses, and so proud as a campus that we were able to witness an event and stop it. And yet, there wasnt really enough justice. We think he got an easier sentence because he is a white male of a privileged background. She is a human being violated in the most disgusting possible way. He has shown no remorse. Has admitted to no crime and is now paying a considerably shorter sentence than he should be. Reporter well, it is a bit ironic that this judge, aaron persky, with this national outrage, a new six year term on the bench. He would have faced voters on tuesday, but his election was canceled, because carol, there were no challenges. As you know, this effort to recall him. It will take 70,000 signatures from santa clara voters to get his name on the ballot. Well see what happens with that. Obviously on social media, everyone is bashing this judge and we havent heard anyone defend him, until now. I spoke to a guy name gary goodman. A public defender in Santa Clara County. He said he knows him well and thinks the outrage is entirely misplaced and recall is not appropriate. Take a look. I think it is absurd. I think it is absolutely absurd. The man is an excellent juryist. He does things the proper and the correct way. And i hope it doesnt have a quelling effect on other judges. If you make a wrong decision, people will come after you and make you change your decision. When those people have no idea of what happened at that trial. Reporter carol, two things to really keep in mind here. We should point out that the Santa Clara CountyProbation Department, they issued this sentence recommendation to the judge, and the judge agreed with it. Another thing to point out is that brock turner, hell also have to be a registered sex offender for life. So what some people pointed out, if turner has children some day, he wont even be able to drop them off at school. They say that itself is a very harsh punishment, but obviously, so much criticism for this six month jail term, carol. Okay, so help us understand exactly why this judge sentenced this kid to such a light sentence. Like, what was his rationale . Because if you read this kids letter, he is not sorry at all. He is just sorry that he lost his swimming career. Well, the judge points out that there was alcohol involved. Thats one thing. But that would assume that all drunk men rape women. Im just telling you what the judge said. Okay, go ahead. Im sorry. Reporter and, and the fact that this student, brock turner, had no prior criminal activity. Also comes from a good family. So would he have family support. So these are the things that the judge mentioned. And also, as i mentioned before, he did get this recommendation from the Probation Department that, you know, they got dozens of letters from friends and family of brock turner, and so the judge felt he made the appropriate decision. Now he is facing the consequences from possibly from voters. All right, dan simon, reporting live from palo, alto, california. King james rules the court. Tennis star tries to stay on court herself. The main role im going to be playing in this process is to remind the American People that this is a serious job. You know, this is not reality tv. Speaking of reality tv, i dont know if you saw celebrity apprentice. I did. Its a great show, yeah. Has donald trump called you for advice or talked to you . He hasnt, no. No . No. Not that i know of, no. Do you think the republicans are happy with their choice . We are, but i dont know how hon hi dont know how thy feel. Athena jones is live at the white house with more on senator sanders meeting with president obama. Good morning, athena. Good morning, carol. As you said, that meeting is just over an hour away, and we expect to to last about an hour, and when it comes to a discussion about just when precisely senator sanders is going to drop out of the race, i can tell you we dont expect the president to directly ask him when are you going to get out. Theyre very sensitive to not wanting to alienate the millions and millions of energetic young Bernie Sanders supporters who theyre going to need to ensure that clinton can win the white house in november, but we do expect the president to begin to try to prod sanders toward accepting Hillary Clinton as the nominee. Thats a key step toward party uni unity, and this is all about party unity. We know, as you saw there, the president is eager to get out on the campaign trail, campaign with Hillary Clinton, and draw a contrast between her and donald trump. He has a lot to say about donald trump. Weve seen a sampling of it over the last several weeks, but what they want to do right now is be very, very careful and be very conciliatory as they try to see, you know, as they try to bring the democratic primary process to a true end. For one thing, d. C. Still has to vote next tuesday, and so we dont expect to see the president , for instance, join clinton on the campaign trail at a big campaignstyle event at least until after that happens, and we know the president wants to hear sanders out. This is the second sitdown the two will have had over the course of this primary season and the fourth time they will have talked just in the last month, carol. All right. Athena jones reporting live from the white house. As democrats look to unify, theyre also keeping up the pressure on donald trump. Senator Elizabeth Warren is set to ramp up her attacks on trump in big speech later tonight. That speech reportedly will take aim at the presumptive nominees, vote, racism. Warren will also slam House Speaker paul ryan and senator Mitch Mcconnell saying trumps words are just part of a larger republican plan to influence the nations courts. Mitch mcconnell tells cnn that trump needs to act more like a president ial candidate with fewer offthecuff comments and perhaps he should use the teleprompter more often. Ive run into him at the Nra Convention in my hometown of louisville a couple weeks ago, and i said, hey, donald, we were in the green room, i said, hey, donald, do you have a script . He said i hate a script, its so boring. I said put me down in favor of boring. Hes one of two people who is going to be president of the United States of america and he needs to act like a president ial candidate. Its not inappropriate to have thoughtful remarks, and nothing wrong with reading them. Cnns chris frates is tracking all the developments too this morning. Hes in washington. Hi, chris. Reporter hey, carol. Many republicans have long feared Donald Trumps divisive rhetoric would derail his campaign. Now with some republicans calling his recent comments about a federal judge downright racist, theyre starting to sound the alarm that if he doesnt tone it down, hes helping to put Hillary Clinton in the white house. And while republicans scramble to respond to their new party leader, democrats, well, theyre pouncing. Senator Elizabeth Warren, who has started to carve out a role as a leading trump opponent plans to try to light up the billionaire in a speech later today. Shes going to go after donald trump for what she says is his remarks about a judge from mexican descent. In fact, saying that those were racist remarks and i have a little bit of what shes going to say according to her prepared remarks. Shes going to say donald trump is a loud, nasty, thinskinned fraud who has never risked anything for anyone and serves nobody but himself. And that is just one of the many reasons why he will never be president of the United States. Judge curiel has survived far worse than donald trump. He has survived actual assassination attempts. Hell have no problem surviving trumps tsay tenasty temper tan. Shes really going to paint trump, House Speaker paul ryan, and Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell with the same broad brush. Shell say, quote, donald trump chose racism as his weapon, but his aim is exactly the same as t the rest of the republicans. Pound the courts into submission to the rich and powerful. Well have to see what other things she has to say in her speech tonight. Its sure to be very, very interesting. Thats true. Chris frates, thanks so much. Lets talk about all this. Im joined by cnn political analyst josh rogan, David Chalian and tim miller. Welcome to all of you. So, david, clearly Elizabeth Warren is trying to bait donald trump. In light of the recent controversy over judge curiel, how might mr. Trump respond . Well, you know, who knows how mr. Trump might respond to anything, but one would imagine it will follow a pattern here where he clearly cares a lot about this case, carol. Hes made it quite clear that he wants to fight against what he feels is mistreatment in this case, but it is also clear that he heard his fellow republicans from his party have extreme concern about the way he was prosecuting that case with the comments about his mexican heritage. He backed off that tuesday night and well continue to see if he does. I think one of the more important parts of what Elizabeth Warren is saying is not just baiting donald trump, but she is clearly now demonstrating what the democratic playbook is going to be and this is what has a lot of republicans concerned here which is to tie Mitch Mcconnell, paul ryan, and every other republican down ballot to donald trump and his most controversial comments, and this is going to be part of her mission when she speaks tonight, and that is the harry reid playbook to try to win back the senate, and this is one of the things that is giving republicans a lot of concern about having trump at the top of the ticket. So its very important how mr. Trump responds to this, if at all. His usual response to senator Elizabeth Warren, tim, is to call her pocahontas. Look, donald trump is probably right now sitting around in his gold lame robe watching cable news because thats what he does. He loves to watch cable news. The idea he will be able to control himself this time is crazy. If any of the republicans on the hill think that now hes turned the corner because he managed to give one teleprompter speech where he didnt make any dirty jokes, theyve lost their mind. And so what well expect to see from donald trump is what we always will see from him which is childish thinskinned attacks. I hated to be on the side of Elizabeth Warren, theres a first for everything. This is one time shes right, he cant control himself, and we dont want a president who is like that and it doesnt take a crystal ball to see thats going to happen in the next couple days. Actually, josh, mr. Trump is meeting with big money fundraisers along with some members of his campaign. What do you think he will say about this very controversy to those fundraisers . Mr. Trump has been very clear that he will defend the party and make it something that they can be proud of. At the same time hes been unable to string together more than two days of actually doing that. You know, hes got these two conflicting messages. On the one hand he says every time hes asked that he doesnt need a big money machine to beat Hillary Clinton. He thinks the billion Dollar Campaign industry is just sort of a slush fund to make campaign professionals rich. At the same time he knows he needs the Republican Party and the donors and the rnc to build the infrastructure he doesnt have. Theres a reality here. Thats the Clinton Campaign is way ahead on fundraising, way ahead in organization, and that does matter. So trump is going to have to ask these guys for money without promising them anything and then will publicly and tell his supporters that he doesnt really need their money after all. Its a careful, tricky kind of thing to say. Okay. So, david, the House Speaker, paul ryan, talked to a local Radio Station in wisconsin, and he talked about, you know, yesterday came out and said mr. Trumps remarks over judge cure yelle were racist but that doesnt necessarily mean donald trump himself was racist. This is what he said this morning on this local Radio Station in wisconsin about mr. Trumps rhetoric. Do i think that these kinds of antics are distracting and give us a campaign that we cannot be proud of . Yeah. I have spoken very clearly about it. But i think and hope and believe that he can fix this to the point where he can hopefully run a campaign that we can all be proud of, and what i can control, jay, is what we do here in congress and what were doing is giving the country a choice and offering very specific Solutions Based on our conservative, constitutionalfounding principles. Thats what i can control. Thats what im doing, and thats what were hoping to offer. Well, the thing is, david, you know, what he calls mr. Trumps antics are overshadowing his very hard work on policy. Yeah, no doubt about that, and paul ryan, you can just hear how tortured he feels about this. I mean, on one day hes going out to totally take donald trump to task for his words, and on the next day he is behind closed doors with his house members saying we really do need to unify and, you know, weve got to make sure we defeat Hillary Clinton. You know, both things are true. But it is it shows what a difficult position paul ryan is in and why you know, when you have tok o go out there as the elected official of the party and say i hope, i think, i believe he can turn this around, you are in a position you dont want to be in. And, tim, you know, im going to ask you to put your hat on. Youre a former Communications Director for the jeb bush campaign, right . Paul ryan says he believes mr. Trump can fix his problem. So if you were on Donald Trumps campaign, what would you tell him . How would you tell him to fix the problem . Theyre in a double bind. There is no fix for donald trump because what he is not the donald trump that inspires people when hes the guy who is neutered in front of the teleprompter, and when you let him loose, he makes these comments that distract from the campaign. But just really quick to davids point, these comments also cover up another big issue between paul ryan and donald trump and really most of the republicans and the house and donald trump is they dont agree on very much when it comes to policy. Donald trump is antitrade. Donald trump is wants to spend more money. Donald trump wants to align us with putin and not britain in foreign policy. Donald trump is not really a social conservative. So, you know, where what are the ties that bind . And as this Campaign Goes on, thats going to be a major problem. But, josh, i think those things kind of resonate with voters, and thats a good thing, isnt it . Well, yeah, weve seen the Republican Party go through the five stages of grief and weve got denial, anger, depression, bargaining, and now they seem to be going through them all over again. The story today was republicans may mount another challenge to Donald Trumps nomination at the convention. Its not a real thing. Donald trump will be their nominee. Theyre having a really hard time wrapping their heads around it. Thats what the voters want and like it or not, thats whats going to happen in cleveland in july. Thanks to all of you. Donald trump got the votes. Now he needs to get the cash. At noon today mr. Trump and his top aides will be meeting with top fundraisers from across the country trying to convince them to sign those checks. But with trump still reeling from the latest in what seems like a neverending slew of controversial comments, that may be no easy task. Cnns Jeremy Diamond is outside the four seasons in new york where that fundraising meeting is set to take place. Good morning, jeremy. Reporter good morning, carol. Donald trump is expected to come here soon. What hes going to be doing is hes going to be meeting with Top Fundraising officials from both the rnc and his campaign and were also expecting some of the top donors to the Trump Victory fund, thats the general Election Fund thats an agreement between the campaign, the rnc, and several state fundraising committees as well. Thats what were expecting donald trump to do here. This comes just as hes reeling from his latest controversy over the Trump University judge, judge curiel who donald trump accused of being biased due to his mexican heritage. Donald trump is trying to do a lot of fundraising now. Hes trying to make appeals to the donor class that has been resistant to joining onto his campaign. The establishment has hesitated at Donald Trumps brash tone. Many of them in the primary opposed him but people are starting to come around to donald trump. This latest controversy was yet again another sign, another sign that sent jitters into the donor class making them question whether or not they could really sign on with somebody like donald trump. So today hes going to make that appeal and try to convince people that he can lead the party, that he does take this responsibility seriously and moving towards raising enough money to compete with Hillary Clinton in the general election. Donald trump said yesterday in an interview that he was not planning he doesnt see a reason, he said, to raise the billion dollars to compete with Hillary Clinton in the general election. He think that he can get away with a much lower fundraising total but hes still going to have to do a lot to compete with Hillary Clinton and the big money that shes pulling in. Carol . Jeremy diamond, well be awaiting the meetings end. Lets talk about this. I want to bring in republican congressman bill flores of texas who says he will not endorse donald trump and republican congressman lou messer from indiana who says he will support the nominee but he has been critical of mr. Trumps rhetoric. Thank you both for being here this morning. Glad to be on. Great to join you. Nice to have you here. Id like you both to listen to what the Ohio Governor, john kasich, the former president ial candidate john kasich, had to say about mr. Trumps comments about judge curiel. Listen. The qualities we need in a leader is very important to me. This is not a game for me. I cant go for dividing, name calling, or somebody that doesnt really represent conservative principles. Are you saying its possible you can walk into that arena in cleveland, ohio, and not endorse . Absolutely. Of course. Look, ive been this way since i was in politics. I kind of call them the way i see them, and never more than today does a country need to be unified, do we need to stop all the fight, do we need to realize that were americans before were republicans and democrats. So, congressman messer, the convention is going to be held in cleveland, ohio, a state very important if you want to win a president ial election, and the Ohio Governor may not endorse the nominee. Has that ever happened before . Well, i dont think its ever happened, and its clearly a problem. Look, donald trump, w was not m first choice for president but im sure not supporting Hillary Clinton. Donald trump is our nominee so im going to support him but donald trump has a role to play here too and i think one of the real mysteries of this Fall Campaign is does donald trump really have a personal tick where he cant control what he says or is he an adult, a leader, and focus on the hopes and dreams of the American People. If he does that, focuses on jobs and the clintons decade long record of deceit, we can win this fall. If he doesnt do that, the real loser is the American Worker because the American Worker cant afford four more years of the same. But congressman flores, its hard to take words back especially when you say them on camera. It is hard to take words but, but i think what its important to do now is for donald trump to show what his vision is for leadership and policy moving forward and a lot less trash talk. 70 of americans are really frustrated with the direction of the country and what they want to hear is a positive vision, and they want to see strong leadership, and you dont get that by trash talking a federal judge based on his ethnic heritage. Sow needs to change channels and focus on two things. One is what is he going to do for america . And number two is, what will hillary do to hurt america . Because neither luke nor i are ever going to vote for hillary, and were both intending to vote for donald trump. The question is will somebody like me come out and endorse him, the leader of the largest conservative caucus in congress. But thats up to donald trump. Here is where im confused when there is no endorsement for a candidate yet isnt a vote an endorsement . No. An endorsement is when you come out and publicly support the candidate. Here is the situation. Lets use donald trump as an example. Several people come to donald trump and they ask to put his name on their properties and donald trump vets them before he allows his name to be used in connection with him. So its the same thing here. Donald trump wants several leaders to come out and support him publicly, but hes got to earn that support. Hes got to talk about vision and leadership and positive policy, not trash talking other people. What i would add to that is, listen, our party is united that were not for Hillary Clinton. The question is can folks put on a donald trump tshirt and the reality is its hard to do that given this current rhetoric. I dont believe but youre still going to vote for him and you cant put on his tshirt. Pardon me . Its just a little odd to me that you cant put on a trump tshirt yet youre still going to vote for him. Theres a big difference. There is. And i think the American People understand this. I have been in politics in a decade. There all sorts of folks i have voted for who i havent endorsed. These are two candidates with very high negatives with the average voter and this is the choice the American People have given us. We dont have a choice between perfection in either one of these candidates. We have a choice between donald trump and Hillary Clinton, and given that choice, im going to be for donald trump. And what luke and i both want is we want donald trump to be in the white house and what we want to do is help him get there by proposing that positive vision for the country. So you want him to present this positive vision to the people. You want him to clean up the rhetoric. But i want to play you something that donald trump said during an nbc town hall on april 19th about sounding more president ial. Here is what he said. Okay. But at the right time i will be so president ial, you will be so bored. You will say, cant he have a little bit more energy . But i know when to be president ial. Well, clearly, congressman messer, he doesnt know when to be president ial, does he . He hasnt shown it yet. I mean, thats the reality of it, and, again, i think the person that loses if donald trump doesnt get this cleaned up isnt donald trump. Hes going to win either way. The person that loses is the American Worker. Thats exactly right. We cannot continue on the same path. We need donald trump to behave like an adult, to paint a positive vision for the future that the American People can rally behind. I believe he still has time but its time he get busy doing it. Congressman flores, you want donald trump to talk about jobs for middleclass americans. Do you know what his plan is to accomplish that . Well, hes talked about tax reform, hes talked about regulatory reform, hes talked about enacting good trade deals, and i think its time for him to spend more time on that, less time talking about judges whose names are not on the ballot and more time talking about how Hillary Clinton would be a continuation of the obama economy which has gone sideways, the loss of National Prestige on the international stage. All the issues that have come up under the Obama Administration would be continued under Hillary Clinton. He needs to talk about those things. And i just want to pose this question to both of you. If you were of mexican descent or you were a muslim or you were an africanamerican, could you trust donald trump to be on your side . Donald trump has made many inappropriate comments. I have spoken out against each of those comments as unamerican and inappropriate. I think hes got a long way to go to earn back that trust. But, listen, those same groups you described have been failed by the current policies of the Obama Administration. Theyre being buried im talking like, you know, i understand. I understand i think thats important to recognize they both matter. But ill ask you the question again, if you were a member of those groups of people, would you say, oh, donald trump is going to be on my side and ill pose this to you congressman flores. Yes, i think he can. I would do two things. I would start by apologizing and say i didnt mean any disrespect to anyone, and then secondly id move forward and say now that the apology is out of the way, here is what i want to do to help you. I want to help you whether youre stuck in a poverty position, to empower you to be able to get you on the economic ladder of opportunity. If youre in the middle class and you have seen your wages go sideways and your Health Care Costs go up, this is what im going to do to help you, and i think once he does that, hell have a great buyin and he will be in the white house and hell be in a position to work with folks like luke and i in congress and to move forward. Here is what folks know, if they support Hillary Clinton, theyre going to get more of the same. Thats correct. I have to leave it there. Congressman bill flores, congressman luke messer, thank you so much for being with me this morning. Still to come in the newsroom, the Olympic Games are coming, but will rio be ready . The Olympic Games are less than two months away and the city is revealing its new deadline for a massive subway project now set to open just four days before the games start. Nick paton walsh has more for you. Reporter rio has a big question without an answer ready just yet. How do olympic tourists get from their hotels here to the games across town without spending hours in this, some of the worst traffic in south america. Well, this was meant to be the answer. An extension to the subway from the beaches almost to the olympic park. But theres just one snag. They Just Announced a new updated opening time and thats only four days before the games begin. Theres always going to be some sort of lastminute rush, but its a sheer amount of economic upheaval that has many concerned that leaving such a vital part of the infrastructure down to lastminute preparations is simply cutting it too fine. It was meant to be open in july. And without it guests may spend a lot of the day in jams. Thats not going to a bit more o go until its ready. Everything is in our schedule. Reporter they say the same thing about the olympic park itself but when we visited when there were 66 days to go it didnt feel that ready. Its strange to walk straight in from there right into the edge of the olympic park here. Whats supposed to be a pretty secure zone in just a matter of weeks from now. And were just going to walk down this way to the site of where previously there was one man holding out with his home. Deeper and deeper we went. Security sitting by. We were born to walk freely. I dont know why they came up with so much security. A man doesnt make another one safe. Security comes from god. Reporter you have to hope they wont be leaving it just up to him however to get rio ready in time. Its that relaxed atmosphere, carol, that, of course, people are hoping to enjoy during the games, but is it really compatible with the kind of tight schedule you saw there . So many projects down to the wire, and this a country dealing with the impeachment of its former president , dealing with an economic crisis, dealing with the outbreak of the zika virus as well and, of course, these Infrastructure Projects which are going to be ready a matter of days ahead of things. Theyre concerned about zika. They tried to assure everybody yesterday at the Olympic Organizing Committee that basically nobody of the potential guests could catch it according to their statistics but there is a feeling here that the challenges are huge and the time is tight, carol. The man is now in jail facing charges of attempted kidnapping and child abuse. The man who captured him eventually is speaking out. Cnns Polo Sandoval has more from atlanta. Good morning. Reporter good morning, carol. That lingering question, why go after this little girl. We understand he had no obvious ties to that 13yearold child. We also understand according to information released by Police Officers that he was not a registered sex offender. We do, however, understand based on information released by his attorney that he does have a history of mental illness. During that initial Court Appearance that just happened yesterday when he was charged, the judge did in his own words say that he had his condition had possibly even gotten worse. In fact, during a separate case, a trespassing case he was actually deemed not fit to stand trial in that particular case. So that obviously could play a role. When you look at this video that has truly gone viral, you see the man tried to grab that little girl. Mom essentially being caught in this tug of war. Even at one point pouncing on top of her little girl just to keep her inside the store. Then he eventually makes his way out of the store, right into the path of a Police Officer who happened to be in the right place. Take a listen. I jumped out of my patrol car. I told him to stop. He tried to back up. I went and i grabbed the door handle to see if it was locked. It was. He had backed up a little bit. At that time i withdrew my firearm, i pointed it at him, and i started banging on the glass with my firearm. It was the only thing in my possession to try to break the glass. He reached over, he pulled up on the door lock. I opened the door as quick as i could. I grabbed him, undid his seat belt, and escorted him out of the vehicle onto the ground. Reporter there is that dramatic recount from that Police Officer. Last thing i should mention, carol, once we spoke to the mans attorney, we were able to confirm he was an air force vet. Discharged from the military in 2008. The question though under what circumstances. That could help us paint a better picture as to what led to that incident in florida. What we have here is a mothers protective instinct and an offduty Police Officer who happened to be at the right place at the right time. Polo sandoval reporting live for us this morning. Thank you. Senator sanders, as i told you at the top of the show, had requested a meeting with president obama. Both men will be talking about the president ial race. When Bernie Sanders might opt to drop out of the race, what could be put in the democratic platform that would appease senator sanders because, you know, senator sanders and his supporters are very important to the Democratic Party and, of course, to the success or failure of Hillary Clinton. Were going to keep an eye on this. Im looking through the trees here. There are lots of secret service so thats a clue for us, right . So that must be Bernie Sanders, senator sanders coming up shortly. Well just wait for just a second. All right. Well keep you posted on whether senator sanders has arrived at the white house and how his meeting goes with president obama. Back in the 1980s a mysterious and deadly epidemic began sweeping the nation. In a moving episode of the 80s we look back at the stigma of aids and the people affected by it. With me is phil wilson who founded the black aids institute in 1999 and has long fought to eradicate aids especially within the africanamerican community. Thank you so much for stopping by. Thank you for having me. I remember back in the late 80s when people were very afraid of people who had contracted hiv or aids. There was a stigma. Some peel werent allowed to go to school or work. Bring us back to those days and tell us about that. Well, you know, for many people, the 80s were the darkest days of the aids epidemic. For those of us living through it, we were seeing our family and friends die literally every day. You would go from a hospital room to a funeral constantly on a daily basis. Fortunately, we are not in those days anymore. We have made tremendous progress, but the aids epidemic is not over. You know, its kind of the scenario that someone goes to the hospital and theyre in critical condition. They get better. Theyre stabilized, but you dont release them. You continue to treat them. Thats the challenge we have today, that in the 80s we didnt have the treatments. Today we have the treatments but will still have stigma and not everyone has access to those treatments. Lets talk about going back to the late 80s and where the stig that wma was the worst. I worked in indianapolis for a short time in the late 80s. I knew ryan white. He contracted aids from a blood transfusion. His school in indiana said you cant go to school because you will infect the other children. And he became quite the voice of the aids epidemic. Tell us his importance. Ryan was a remarkable young man, and clearly a hero. Ryan and jeanne were extremely courageous and extremely instrumental in kind of establishing the notion that people with hiv deserve love and compassion and access to treatment. As a result, the ryan white care act, arguably the largest federal investment in hk wealth care was named after ryan white. I remember interviewing his mother very often. They were very accessible. They attracted worldwide support and celebrity attraction. Donald trump visited ryan whites mom after his death. Elton john came up with a special song for ryan white. All of those things helped focus attention on hiv aids. Today i dont think as much attention is focused on hiv aids, and is that a bad thing, a good thing . It is a very bad thing. Kind of out of sight, out of mind. We are in a place where people continue to get infected in part because they themselves think that the aids epidemic is over. There are thousands of americans who get infected every year who dont know that theyre infected because they have not yet gotten treated because they dont believe they are at threat. So keeping it at the forefront and one of the things thats wonderful about this show this evening is hopefully it will remind people the advances we made in the 80s and encourage us to continue to do the work we need to do to actually get to the end game. We need to continue to fight stigma and we need to find a cure. Phil wilson, thanks so much. I appreciate your stopping by. Thank you and thank you for your great work. Thank you so much. To see more moving moments tune in the 80s tonight. Im carol costello. At this hour with berman and bolduan starts now. What happens during primaries, you get a little ouchy. Everybody does.
