I spoke to, actually, just earlier this afternoon, a representative from the tampa pd who tells me he like so many people watched what happened in chicago on friday, saw what happened when the man rushed the stage in ohio. Saw what happened on sunday in boca raton here in florida. As you can imagine, security here a great concern. They had a briefing about it this morning. He says his officers will not get involved unless, of course, theres something that the secret service cannot handle. As for trumps part, hes remaining defiant as ever, carol, as you know, saying he is not to blame for what happened over the weekend, saying Bernie Sanders shares some of that blame as well. If my people went into one of his rallies, theyd say this is a terrible thing. Theyd be arrested and all sorts of things would happen to them. If conservative republicans ever wept into his rally, you would see things happen that would be unbelievable, and bernie would be poor bernie, isnt that a shame . Trump also saying that the media has been unfair to him in terms of how the media has portrayed what has happened. He says the media deserves some of the blame in all of this as well. But getting back to the event here later today at 2 00 at the Convention Center. Once again, tampa pd saying they have no intention of getting involved unless theres something the secret service cannot handle. Theyre also saying that Going Forward they believe that this event will be a peaceful one, given that the event not too long ago where trump hosted some 10,000 people. They say that went off without a hitch. Theyre hoping what happens here later today will go off without a hitch as well. Reporting live in tampa. We saw violence, trump himself saying he would consider paying legal fees for somebody who punched a protester. I understand you will say that you made a promise to support the nominee and youll keep it. But at what points do events on the ground force you or have you reconsider and maybe look at your position given that your rivals have said it would be extremely difficult to support trump if he were the nominee . I could give you one example. If he were to go out on fifth avenue and shoot somebody, i would not be willing to support donald trump, but i think the best answer to donald trump, to his failed liberal policies, to his being immeshed in washington corruption, supporting the policies that have caused so much damage, funding open border democrats, funding the architects of obama care, all of which hes done. The answer is not to cry in your beer about the support donald as received and not to deal with the washington establishment hopes to do in the fevered dreamers, where they dream of a brokers convention. Where theres a deadlock and they get an establishment candidate who is their salvation. Thats not going to happen. And it would spark an absolute revolt, quite rightly, from the voters. The way to beat donald trump is beat him at the ballot box which is what we have been doing, and that is why our campaign, republicans, are uniting behind the campaign because were the only campaign that has beaten donald trump over and over and over again, and to date weve beaten donald trump nine different times all over the United States of america. At the time i wrote to the ceos of the banks, observing that in texas we had a different view of political power, a more humble view that we didnt think elected officials should be in the business of extorting private citizens and threatening government power and retaliation against anyone who disagrees on policy. You know, any political candidate who demands the people who attend his rallies that they raise their hands and pledge support to that candidate as donald trump does, in my view, is getting it backwards. The people of illinois are familiar with that. There have been chicago mayors who demand things, perhaps on the knees. Thats a phrase donald trump likes. He likes suggesting that people come to him and he makes them get down on their knees. If you like the abuse of power from chicago democrats, then donald trump is a great candidate. Senator cruz, good politician that he is, is trying to make something of this thats more than was you know, in fact. Thats the way you go here. I dont know what the polls show in illinois, but i think hes behind there too. Hes trying to appeal to people to say, look, donald trump is not the guy to follow because hes a liberal democrat in disguise. Hes given money to disgraced democratic politician and he wants you to drop to your knees if you dont pledge loyalty to him. Some parts of that have more meaning than others. The part about pledging to vote for a candidate, in a state when early voting is going on, trying to make sure people go out and vote for him, thats understandable. Thats sort of meaningless. The rest of it, though, i think is sort of important, and its kind of a trail of bread crumbs for reporters who follow. Theres a big sort of garish looking Trump Building on the chicago river, and a lot of people in chicago didnt want it there, and to the extent that he got zoning changes and some political help in making that happen, it might well be connected to the donations that hes made to the mayor. Trump has always responded that i went around and bought pligs of all stripes in order to further my business interests. To the extent this is about the soul not just of the Republican Party but of the conservative poli political movement, some say thats not acceptable. Thats not how you lead a conservative moment by giving money to your opponents over and over again for selfish, personal business reasons. Jeffrey, i know that mr. Trump, i think that he appears kind of worried about ohio. I want to talk about ohio for a second. He added another event there that he didnt have on the schedule. Why is he going back there . It is close, but all accounts. What i always find interesting about whether its florida, ohio, or texas, is that if youre the governor of ohio in the kasich sense, and you cant win your own state, then youve got a problem. If you are the governor of ohio and you win your home state, you would say, well, so what, and that would apply to marco rubio in florida and ted cruz did win texas. Hes the senator from texas. I always think these home state primaries are sort of a double edged sword. They can be fatal if you lose them. If you win them, in essence, people are asking so what, youre the governor or the senator from the state, you ought to be able to win it. I have to leave it there. Thanks to both of you. His Approval Rating is some 27 , and Bernie Sanders is suddenly trying to tie rom emmanuel to Hillary Clinton. Let me say that as you know, Hillary Clinton proudly lists the mayor of chicago, rom, emmanuel as one of her leading mayor endorsers. I believe hes at the top of the list of mayors endorsing her. Let me be as clear as i can be. Based on his disastrous record as mayor of the city of chicago, i do not want his endorsement if i win the democratic nomination. That is not the kind of support that i want to take. North carolina represents two areas of weakness for sanders. Its a southern state, and it has a large African American population. I think thats why hes had to pour a lot of money into the state. That just stands to reason. So do ads work . Its such a different type of Campaign Season . Im sorry, what . Ad blitzes, Like Television ad blitzes . Probably not. I think particularly senator sanders supporters are probably in a more digital area than the ad blitzes on tv. Do you expect a large turnout tomorrow . Yes, we do, and weve already had a large turnout. Our voters are very excited about this race, and were all looking forward to it. We have a lot of races in North Carolina that are very important, and we have primaries in many of those. The florida senator touring florida today holding a meet and greet with voters in jackson just moments ago, and despite recent polling that shows donald trump with a Comfortable Lead in the sun shine state. Rubio is certain voters will pull through for him. So is this do or die for rubio . Lets talk about that with john avalon and michael warren. Welcome welcome, gentleman. Good morning. Ill be blunt. John, does rubio have a prayer . Prayer, yes. Probability, no. Not if the polls are saying anything about it. But, look, its a cliche to say that the only poll that counts on election day. Thats because its true. And marco rubio is a home state senator who should have on advantage. The fact the polls show him getting beat is not a good thing for his campaign and possibly his political future. But lets until the votes are cast. If he loses his home state, which really should be a given in president ial primaries, hes toast. Stick a fork in him. I was talking to republican officials when i was in florida last week, michael that a lot of people have already voted in early voting in florida, and that was before all of this stuff happened with trump and rubio became down and dirty with trump, and we might be surprised with the results in florida. Yeah. Some of those early voting statistics indicate that rubio actually has an advantage among early voters. I agree with john. The polls dont bode well for marco rubio. Hes down double digits to trump. The polls have generally been pretty good this cycle at predicting what the final vote is going to be, particularly trumps final vote. Now, mar dco rubio has had a go track record of finishing better in some of the earlier states than where he was poll. Thats such a large margin. I do question whether or not he can actually close the gap. Crazier things have happened this election. Im not ready to make a prediction, but its not looking good for rubio. Okay. Lets talk about ohio. Kasich is now campaigning in your neck of the woods. Youngstown, ohio. Some polls have him virtually tied with donald trump. Other polls have donald trump up just a bit. What do you think will happen . Look, this is really the race to watch, because it shows kasich in some polls having a narrow lead. Never good to have to fight for your home state, particularly if youre a sitting governor. In the larger field of the stop trump politics, if trump wins ohio and florida, its almost game over. If kasich can peel off ohio, then he certainly lives to fight another day. What i think is interesting is the Rubio Campaign spokesman said late last week that rubio supporters in ohio should support john casikasich as part the effort. And ted cruz has been Building Office was in florida, apparently designed to kneecap marco one final time. But the politics of ohio are fascinating. Obviously big prize in the general, and that youngstown, ohio area near and dear to my heart is a swing part of the swing state, and trump is hoping he can peel off disaaffected democrats, union voters who may switch to support him. Its a fascinating realtime fight right you. And mitt romney will be campaigning in ohio for kasich. John boehner, he sent out a picture of himself blowing hmow lawn, and then he endorsed kasich. That was the happiest man in the world. It could have an affect. John boehner hated by some of the more conservative members of the Republican Party. Hes still an ohio guy. Thats an important part of the state, republican part of the state in south western, ohio from cincinnati where hes from. I think that could have an effect. And kasich is in a better position to win ohio than florida is for rubio. The other states to watch for tomorrow are illinois and missouri. Theyre not strictly winner take all. Theyre proportional, and i think ted cruz could perform well in missouri. John kasich could do well in some of the congressional districts in illinois. That could really cut into trumps delegate math. I dont think its over even if donald trump wins ohio and florida, theres still a way to keep them under the necessary number of delegates. It just gets a lot tougher for the never trump type folks. All right. I want to touch on the democrats for a bit, john. Bernie sanders is doing pretty well in illinois which is kind of surprising since chicago is kind of Hillary Clinton land, right . It is surprising, but the one poll that has been totally wrong this cycle was michigan. And so theres an upper midwest momentum toward Bernie Sanders right now, particularly in the chicago area. Some of the polls show strong support among latinos in particular, and in the politics of illinois, this gets kind of interesting. But the mayor of Chicago Association with the clintons, bernie is trying to hammer that home as a negative and drive up his minority numbers. But the south of the part that is more conservative and more rural and more white, this is technically Hillary Clintons home state. You can pick one of three, illinois, arkansas, new york, but she grew up in illinois. Expect a big fight there, and missouri one poll showing bernie one up. Again, Pay Attention to the key cities in the states to see what turnout is on the democratic state. Well Pay Attention. Michael and john, thanks to both of you.
