Plus e. Were right on the front line in the Syrian Governments offensive against the opposition. Cnn takes you inside the battle for aleppo, syria. Lets talk, live in the cnn newsroom. And good morning. Im carol costello. Thank you so much for joining me. One stage, two candidates, a lot of talk about president obama. Hillary clinton and Bernie Sanders battle for the spotlight during the democratic debate. But like i said, at times it seemed there were three people on that stage. I think president obama has set a great example. I think he has addressed a lot of these issues that have been quite difficult. President obama succeeded in doing was to build on the Health Care System we have. I think under president obama, we have seen a lot of advances. I understand what president obama inherited. So i think what president obama did was to xemp pexemplif importance of this issue as the first africanamerican president. Embracing president obamas legacy and Bernie Sanders ready ta create his own calling for a revolution as clinton called for a reality check. We have more for you. Reporter good morning, carol. The debate opened the next phase of the democratic primary fight. Hillary clinton tried to serve as a big reality check to Bernie Sanderss aspirations. Just the two of them onstage but the third man on the field was barack obama. And Hillary Clinton hupg ehugge tighter than ever before trying to make his case that she would be his rightful heir. Secretary clinton, youre not in the white house yet. Reporter a contentious night for Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton. Side by side on the stage for the First Time SinceBernie Sanderss New Hampshire victory upended the democratic primary fight. Again and again clinton tried making one thing clear she is the rightful successor to president obama. Today senator sanders said president obama failed the leadership test. This is not the first time. Reporter a message for democratic voters of South Carolina. More than half of whom are africanamerican and widely adore the president. The kind of criticism that weve heard from senator sanders about our president , i expect from republicans. I do not expect from someone running for the democratic nomination to succeed president obama. Ooh that is madam secretary that is a low blow. Last i heard, a united senator had the right to disagree with the president , including a president whos done such an extraordinary job. One of us ran against barack obama. I was not that candidate. Reporter sanders had the final word, but it opened a new chapter in the democratic duel that may be just beginning. The pbs be debate exposed deeper lines in their policy and political differences on health care, immigration and wall street reform. Clinton presented herself as the keeper of the obama legacy. Before it was called obama care it was called hillary care. Reporter if elected, sanders said Race Relations would be better in his administration. Absolutely. What we will do instead of giving tax breaks to billionaires, we are going to create millions of jobs for lowincome kids so theyre not hanging out on street corners. Reporter another flashpoint, money in politics. Clinton again tide herself to obama and rejected the suggestion she would be swayed by campaign donations. So lets not in any way imply here that either president obama or myself would in any way not take on any vested interest, whether its wall street or Drug Companies or Insurance Companies or, frankly, the gun lobby lets not insult the intelligence of the American People. People arent dumb. Why in gods name does wall street make Huge Campaign contributions . I guess just for the fun of it. They want to throw money around . Reporter sanders ran strong among women in New Hampshire. Clinton was asked why. I am not asking people to support me because im a woman. Im asking people to support me because i think im the most qualified, experienced and ready person to be the president and the commander in chief. Reporter on Foreign Policy, sanders took a new approach in questioning clintons judgment calls out her admiration for Henry Kissinger. I am proud to say that Henry Kissinger is not my friend. I will not take advice from Henry Kissinger. Well, i know journalists have asked who you do listen to on Foreign Policy, and we have yet to know who that is. Well, it aint Henry Kissinger, thats for sure. Thats fine. Reporter he said her comments on president obama areofwere a low blow. Carol, thats where this race stands as it moves forward to nevada and South Carolina. And then, of course, those allimportant contests across the country in march. Carol . All right, jeff zeleny reporting, thank you. There is a reason Hillary Clinton is fighting to be the rightful heir to president obama. He is astoundingly popular in South Carolina among africanamerican voters. According to an nbc news marist poll, obamas Approval Rating among africanamericans in South Carolina is is a whopping 92 . Clintons favorability rating among africanamericans in South Carolina is 74 to sanders 17 . And john lewis, the civil rights icon, did not help sanders close the gap. Well, to be very frank, i dont want to cut you off, but i never saw him. I never met him. I chaired the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee for three years, from 1963 to 1966. I was involved in the sitin, the freedom ride, the march on washington, the march from selma to montgomery and directed the Voter Education project for six years. But i met Hillary Clinton, i met president clinton. All right. Lets talk about this. Im joined by jason johnson, professor of Political Science and politics editor at the root. Com and a Democratic NationalCommittee Super delegate and Bernie Sanders supporter. Welcome to both of you. Good morning. Thank you. Good morning. So jason, before we get into the lewis versus sanders battle, lets talk president obama. Mrs. Clinton is embracing him. Sanders is trying to. Why is this important and is it effective . Look, carol, if hillary hugs obama any tighter i think, like, michelles going to get involved. Its gotten ridiculous. I mean, shes just said everything that obama ever did is fantastic. And the reason is because, hes not just popular with africanamerican democrats. Hes extremely popular with democrats in general and the Clinton Campaign has made a calculated risk that even amongst independents, that connecting yourself to the positive aspects of the Obama Administration is somehow going to end up playing out well for her. Shes going to keep hugging him the entire time. Does mr. Obama enter into the occasion for you . A sanders supporters . Obviously, we are very proud of our first black president but this race is about the future, about Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. I want to hear more of their differences. Bernie sanders did a getter job giving a vision of america when elected president. Although i will say, jason, that Hillary Clinton challenged Bernie Sanders in a measured tone this time, not in the tone she did during the last debate, and some people said that was effective . Well, yeah. She did. I mean, she pointed out the fact that, you know, sanders has criticized president obama, sanders suggested that obama, you know, should be primaried in 2012. You know, shes basically shes continued to sort of promote, i think, this myth that Bernie Sanders is going to tear down the Affordable Care act and start it from the beginning, because liberals didnt get everything they want. I dont think her attacks on sanders as someone whos going to destroy the obama legacy are necessarily all that effective. I think clinton is much more effective when she points out that Bernie Sanders, there may be weaknesses in this Foreign Policy, questions about his time and commitment to, say, africanamerican or Latino American voters. Those are more substantive critiques. The idea hes going to destroy everything obamas done if elected president , thats completely not true. Okay. I want to go to the john lewis thing, erin, because i think its fair. Bernie sanders camp did respond to that. His camp said he did participate in the civil rights movement, even participating in the march on washington. Very Harsh Criticism coming from john lewis, though. Could it hurt Bernie Sanders . Know, congressman lewis is one of the greatest living civil rights icons in america. Theres no question what he went try and what hes done. These are amazing things. I think the real issue at hand is that we as democrats have two candidates that are fighting to say who is going to work harder for civil rights in this country, while the Republican Party is talking about building walls. I mean, theres a huge difference between our party and the Republican Party, and i think its a positive thing that were fighting about whos better on civil rights. So jason, ill pose that question to you. You saw that stat from the nbc news marist poll that clinton is leading sanders among support from africanamericans. In South Carolina by, look at that, 74 to 17 . So how can sanders overcome that . Well, hes not going to. Hes not going to, and that, carol, is why this john lewis thing comes into play. The Sanders Campaign has had to go back to the 1950s to say, well, i marched with king. Tons of people marched with king. That doesnt necessarily mean you have a connection to africanamerican vote es today. Why youve seen, say, both campaigns running around trying to get endorsement of Trayvon Martin the mother, things like that. Because theres a disconnect between the clinton and Sanders Campaign with black vote herbs, theyre all chasing symbolic ekz cans but both really have to show policywide, whether they have to offer the black community other than symbols and black and white photos when they supposedly marched with somebody. I have to leave it there. Thanks to both of you. Thank you. Youre welcome. As tensions heat up, harry reid doesnt see the race cooling off anytime soon. Sduring a oneonone interview with cnn reid said, that could mean the possibility of a brokered convention. I want to bring in cnn political reporter who sat down with senator reid. What else did he have to say . Hey, carol. Its really been interesting, as weve seen the Party Establishment really coalesce behind Hillary Clinton. One person is not that is harry reid. One reason why, because the nevada caucuses are the next race in this democratic primary fight, and hes doing everything he can to show neutrality, in a really surprising comment yesterday he said, he said, look, this race could go for a long, long time, and all the way to the Democratic Convention in july. We have had these races go on for long, long time. Reporter is there a possibility we could be going into a Democratic Convention without a consensus nominee . I dont know, but it would be kind of fun. Reporter is it possible for a brokered convention . Sure, sure. I serious seriously, some of the old conventions produced some pretty good people. Reporter really, the comments really reflect a surprise among Party Leaders that this race has gotten so close. Of course, they have thought that nevada and South Carolina by that point, Hillary Clinton would be running away with this race, but clearly is not. Harry reid was very critical in our interview of the Hillary Clinton campaign for suggesting that the nevada electorate is 80 white. He said that that is absolutely not the case. This is a very diverse state that really represents the democratic coalition. He said they are way behind the times on that issue. So some very interesting frustration we are hearing from a powerful democrat just shows how much work Hillary Clinton still has in front of her, not only to get the party behind her, but also to alleviate concerns on capitol hill about her candidacy, carol . All right. Reporting live from washington, thank you. Still to come in the newsroom, attack ads, cursing. Donald trump said, no more. Can the gop frontrunner really play mr. Nice guy . Ive smoked a lot and quit a lot, but ended up nowhere. Now i use this. The nicoderm cq patch, with unique extended release technology, helps prevent the urge to smoke all day. Gop president ial candidates canvassing South Carolina ahead of next weeks primary and today a few are taking part in a faith and family forum. In the meantime, the ohio governor, john kasich, is banking on a positive approach to help him sway voters. Look at his newest ad. When my father was a postman that told me, johnny, you stand on your own two feet. You go out there and change the world. I believe the lord put us on this earth to used gifts that weve been given to bring about a healing, and and guess what . It looks like mr. Trump, donald trump, may be taking a page out of kasichs playbook. Heres cnns sarah murray. Reporter thats right, carol. John kasichings stunning message hedged him land a secondplace finish in New Hampshire and the Trump Campaign is saying they think a positive message could he them do well in South Carolina, too. Pulling down an attack ad against ted cruz in South Carolina and instead putting up a positive spot where voters talk about why theyre supporting donald trump. That spot aired late in New Hampshire and they said they think it help its donald trump win there. Now theyre trying out that strategy in a more rough are and tumble state, South Carolina, but whats not clear is whether donald trump is really ready to stick to such an approach. He was campaigning here in louisiana last night and he took some tough swipes at his rivals saying ted cruz was like a child, and he went after george w. Bush for joining his brother on the campaign trail. Sort of mocking jeb for bringing his brother and mothers help along the way. Well have to see if he carries over this positivity heading back to South Carolina. At least for today hell be campaigning in florida. Back to you. Thank you so much. Trump is mixing negative ads, but what about all the cursing . I wont use foul language. Im just not going to do it. Im not going theyre all saying do it, do it. No. Ill never do it again, actually. Oh, but then just 20 minutes later radeks islamic terrorism. We got a problem. Weve got a problem. And we damn well better figure out what the problem is. I backed mccain and i backed romney. Mccain lost. Romney lost. I said, dammit, the next time im just going to do it myself. Right . Right . So what is trump actually meaning when he says hes going to go positive . Talk about that. With me, Jamie Weinstein and matt lewis. Daily caller is a political conservative website offering news and opinions. Good morning to you both. Jamie what do you think do you think donald trump is serious when he says hes going to go positive in South Carolina . Maybe his campaign was serious when they said that, but they didnt give the memo to donald trump. Earlier this morning hes already tweeted that ted cruz is ay whoer and how can he possibly be an evangelical christian if hes lying about his record . The truth is that donald trump isnt capable of going positive when other people attack him. Thats his natural propensity to drop kind of rhetorical Nuclear Bombs on anyone who challenges him. So no matter what his campaign is saying, hes not going to go fully positive. You know, maybe hell cut back on cursing in South Carolina killer and save it for new jersey, but hes certainly going to go after his rivals with the full force of his rhetorical power. So matt, listen to what john kasich told erin burnett about donald trump going positive last night. Donald trump saying hes going to go positive. I sort of predicted that if we could show that positive works, it might change the tenure of the campaign. All of these people that want to go negative, how are you going to sell anything . How will you bring people together when all youre doing is trashing somebody else . Why dont we just have people talk about what theyre for . So, matt, do you think that donald trump ripped a page from john kasichs playbook . I think donald trump is a political chameleon. Its not because the campaign believes that America Needs a positive vision or that thats what political rhetoric should are, optimistic. Its because they think it might win. Trump will do what he thinks will help him win in a given situation. I have to say, john kasich was a distant second to donald trump in New Hampshire. So the notion that positivity and optimism all of a sudden is selling, i think its a little dubious. You know . There was a time i think when, when conservatism could be more optimistic and that was a selling point. Right now weve seen anger, frustration, indignation be what moves voters. I hope the corner has been turned but im skeptical about that. Particularly in the state of South Carolina, jamie. Known for its kind of ruough an tumble politics. Dont you need to be where every ad you see on television is negative . In fairness to donald trump, hes not the only one going negative in South Carolina. You have a lot of the other candidates, from rubio to ted cruz already attacking each other in ads on the air. John kasich and ben carson may be the exception. I just think that, you know, even if Donald Trumps campaign wants him to go positive, the man for 40 years has never allowed anybody to say a nasty word about him and let it roll off his back. If someone goes after him, hes going to go after them back, no matter if the strategy is to be positive or not. And ted cruz has god negative against trump. How are they running . So many polls so different things. Who do you think will come out ahead . Ive been right in iowa, picked ted cruz. In New Hampshire donald trump to fish first and kasich second. I wont mess up my predictions right yet because we havent seen any polling. Its still early, but, look, let me just say i think these are two very Good Campaigns. Donald trump is running a Good Campaign. Ted cruz is running a Good Campaign. Lewendowski and rowe. I think its going to end up being vicious. South carolina always gets nasty. Remember back to 2000 what happened to john mccain down in South Carolina . I think that this hope that this might be an optimistic and uplifting campaign, neighbor will last a day or two, but i dont think its going to last too long. All right. I have to leave it there. Matt lewis, Jamie Weinstein, thanks to both of you for stopping by. Thank you. Youre welcome. Still to come in the newsroom, another battle at the southern border. Pope francis is in the air over the atlantic right now and look at him. Wearing a sombrero, while making his second trip to cuba this time for an historic meeting with the head of the Russian Orthodox church, but the controversial part of his jurn around the reason hes wearing the sombrero, when the pope touches down in mexico. On wednesday the pope travels to the border town of suarez, hes expected to pray for the thousands who died trying to cross the border into the United States. The pope is even holding a crossborder mass that hundreds of thousands are expected to attend on both sides of the border. The republican frontrunner donald trump is weighing in on the popes visit to mexico calling the pope political, and saying pope francis doesnt understand border safety. Well, i think that the pope is a very political person. I think he doesnt understand the problems our country has. I dont think he understands the danger of the open border that we have with mexico. And i think mexico got him to do it, because mexico wants to keep the border just the way it is, because theyre marking a fortune and were losing. With me now to talk about this, representative javier viqueira, a democrat from california, who supports Hillary Clinton. Welcome, sir. Thank you, carol. The vatican says pope francis does not want to intervene in american politics but isnt that exactly what hes doing . This is the pope. Perhaps the most respected leader in the world. Anything he says is going to impact people throughout the world. So hes going to have an impact everywhere and certainly for the millions of catholics, the millionings of immigrants who are catholics, its going to have an impact. What would anyone expect . We knew donald trump was against immigrants. We didnt realize he was against the immigrant in chief, the son of an immigrant and thats the pope. So pope francis is going to do what he does and that donald trump is now against the pope, im not surprised. Congressman, should the pope inject himself into american politics . Again, carol i dont know hes not going to step on u. S. Soil. And hes going to talk about what he always talks about, as the leader of the catholic faith, and as i said, a lidder leader of the world. Talk about humanity, to sacrifice for each other and treat each other as brothers and sisters. So i applaud the pope for what hes doing today in cuba in meeting with the patriarch and i aprplaud what hes doing in mexico, talking to all those suffering, refugees, seeking what we have. Mr. Trumps comments aside, the Justice Department will soon repat trriate 313,000 who cross the border illegally last year. It is clear we have a border problem, isnt it . We have a challenge in dealing with people who want to come to america. The magnet of the world. Absolutely. I aplaplaud president obama go after first those trying to do us harm, criminals and deport them. Recognize it. A lot of folks established a life here, we hebbed establish a life by giving them a chance to work here, a chance to be around our neighborhoods. Many doing this for years, and what hes saying is, rather than go after women and children, and families, lets go after felons, and unless congress were to give the president innumerable resources, the president has to focus his attention to go after those trying to do us harm, the felons, rather than break up families. Not all of these 313,000 people are felons. Are they . No. What the president has also said if, if you were recently trying to cross the border, trying to make it clear, dont do that. Do it the right way. The president made it clear, we should have priorities. But has made an emphatic point, carol, it has to be clear, that the president s policy is to go after those who are trying to do us harm who are in this country without documents, because you never know who they might be, and what they might try to do, and i agree with him completely, but should we go to that Grocery Store or have our i. C. E. Agents poted at schools to try to pick up children or people working, going to the Grocery Store to bring home food for their families . No. Theres a clear case with the limited resources we have with homeland security, we should go after those trying to do us harm. Back to mr. Trump for a second. Mr. Trump and senator cruz, who is a cubanamerican, by the way, both support building a wall to keep undocumented immigrants out. I know you have a problem in particular with senator cruz. Why . Well, i have a problem with the whole idea of building a wall. You can always build a ladder taller than the wall. Its that it doesnt speak to the real challenge we face, and certainly for someone like tough call, whos of cuban heritage. The son of immigrants, its kind of odd that he he must understand that cubans who try to come into this country even without documents, the moment they set foot on the u. S. , if their toe touches u. S. Soil, they are granted Refugee Status automatically. No questions asked. Thats a policy thats existed for a long time, and for him to be talking about excluding building a wall for those immigrants from, say, Central America and not giving them the same treatment as cubanamericans, again, it raises a question. As president , would he treat people differently, disparately, based on who he likes and doesnt like . Thats a real failing of senator cruz. Senator rubio as well, quite honestly. Are you saying that the United States should change its policy when it comes to cubans coming into the United States . I think the United States has to have a clear a a consistent policy. Nonsensable reasons. So when it comes to cuban immigrants. It theyre coming here to work hard to make this country better, thats great. I applaud that. Im the son of immigrants, and i would never deny a family thats working hard, trying to do things the right way in this country, an opportunity to do what my parents did. A father with a sixth grade education. Mother from mexico when she married my dad at 18. Im the first in my family to get that Fouryear College degree. Those are the kinds of things america is about. Immigrants, if you want to work hard, make this country better, we should welcome you. Lets all try to do it the right way and why we have to try to fix this broken immigration system. A tentative deem reached that could be the first step to stop the fighting inside syria. Leaders from more than a dozen countries including the United States and russia met in germany to hammer out that agreement. Secretary of state john kerry calls it a cessation of hostilities. Not a ceasefire set to take effect in one week and providing desperately needed aid for syrian refugees. Russia will continue its air strikes on targets inside syria since the truce does not apply to them. Still, this tentative deal comes as the Syrian Government forces make new advances in the key battleground city of aleppo. Much of that city has already been reduced to dust and rubble following fish ye ing five year fighting. Dealing a crushing blow that could give them a decisive victory once and for all. We have rare access to the front lines in aleppo and joins us now. Good morning. Frederick . Obviously he could not hear us and hopefully well get back to nim a second. Lets go to the taped portion of his report. Reporter years of urban combat have laid waste to aleppos old town. Syrian army snipers scan the terrain for possible movement on the other side. Were right on the front line in the Syrian Governments offensive against the opposition and soldiers tell us they still frequently see rebels on the other side but also say they often pick them off from the snipers nest. Reporter this soldier tells me morale has never been higher thanks to god, everything here is under control, he says. Our fingers are on the triggers ready to destroy the rebels. Bashar al assad forces made major gains in recent weeks while the opposition rebels say theyre simply being slaughtered. For years in a stalemate. The front line right around aleppos ancient citadel as syrian and russian warplanes hover overhead, the commander knows who to thank for the newfound momentum. Translator its only a matter of months until we win. Reporter thanks to the Russian Support we will defeat the rebel its once and for all. Alep pa was syrias largest and most historic towns. Tourists from around the world used to flock to the old town before engulfed by syrias brutal civil war. The old town is a unesco heritage site. Hundreds mps thousands of years old and most completely destroyed and burned out. But now assads troop believe they are on a verge of a decisive victory. The Commander Warns the u. S. Not to interfere. We are steadfast, he says. You cannot defeat the syrian army, because we are determined to win, and were royal to president assad. Amid this divided anden destroyed city, Syrian Government forces believe theyre dealing a crushes blow to the opposition, one that could end this fiveyear sieve many war thats destroyed so much more than just the landscape. And, carol, it has certainly destroyed so much more than just the landscape. When you speak to people in aleppo, they are so sick of the fighting going on for five years whether in governmentcontrolled or rebelcontrolled area. It is so difficult to live here. Almost no electricity. Very little supplies for many of them as well. The other thing we found striking going there along the front line, in the town of alep pa, also in northern aleppo, the nature sway that both iran and hezbollah and the russians have there as well. Theres a lot of pictures of irans Supreme Leader also of the leader of hezbollah and people there, the progovernment fighters, will tell you, its no secret for them that russians were the ones that made the difference for them on the battlefield. Not just with their air strikes themselves, but also because they continue to provide aerial intelligence to the syria military to make their strikes more accurate. Carol . Were going to keep campaigning. Were not suspending the campaign over that. A Washington Post reporter was the miami bureau chief. Welco welcome, manual. Who was the real rubio . The guy that made the joke or the robotic guy in the debate . When he was a young man, he volunteered and worked for bob doles president ial campaign, and he was asked to go on the radio as a surrogate for bob dole. He wasnt prepared. He had a terrible experience on the radio. He vowed never, ever to not be prepared again, and i think you see sort of the effects of that kind of mind set when he goes on stage now. Hes ready. He has his lines ready to go. And he is so smooth that sometimes that can come off as phony or canned. You know, the rub on him is that hes always been very tightly controlled by his handlers, even when he was a state lawmaker in florida. Is that fair . Hes somebody who has a close knit circle of advisors. He listens to them, and they consult with each other about what their line of attack is going to be, and then he stays on message and hes disciplined. Hes going to repeat and pound the same points over and over again because he realizes that not everyone is tuning in at every moment during the campaign like, say, for instance, you and i are. Exactly. Rubio appears today at the faith and family forum in greenville, South Carolina. Its a chance to appeal to evangelicals. His own religious path is kind of confusing. Explain that for us. Yeah. I would put it under the category of its complicated. He was born catholic. As a child the family moved to las vegas. He converted to mormonism. He went back to the catholic children. When he was married he attended both an Evangelical Church and a catholic church. He is a person who speaks about religion in a very sincere way. I would count it as one of his biggest advantages. He talks about god and he talks about faith in a more open and accessible manner than anyone else on the Campaign Stage right now, even ted cruz who appeals so well to evangelicals. I would expect him to continue talking about his personal relationship with god throughout this campaign. Interesting. Lets talk about rubios stand on immigration. Hes hardened his stance, right . You know, once hes running for president , he hardened his stance. Can you explain where he stands on immigration . I think anyone watching this closely would have a difficult time explaining exactly where he has been on immigration, because he has so subtly evolved his positions and his tone on immigration. You know, when he was in the legislature, when i first began looking at his career, he took a tone that was really very proimmigrant. It was a moderate tone. When he ran for the senate, he changed the tone. He talked about things like the papers please law in arizona and how he would have voted for that. That really made him a superstar with the conservative press and with the tea party. They expected a different kind of senator when he got to washington. And when he came in as a key member of the gang of eight, reforming the Immigration Program in the United States, a lot of those people who supported him when he ran for the senate and made him a star felt betrayed. So where do you think hell land on immigration when all is said and done . Its clear he wants to do something about immigration. Its a personal issue for him because he is not only from florida but he is from a family of imgramigrantimmigrants. I would expect him to talk a lot about securing border but also talk about improving the system for entry and exit with visas so that its a more orderly system. The real pressure on him will be whether he will take a hard stand on a path to citizenship for the 11 million or 12 Million People in the country undocumented. That is the tough question for him to answer, and its the one that he eventually will be forced to answer. Im sure youre right about that. Manual, thank you so much for joining me this morning. Happening now in the news room, clinton to the mt. I think president obama has set a great example. Before it was called obama care it was called hillary care. And excludes sanders from the circle. Senator sanders said that president obama failed the president ial leadership test. But the vermont senator has a reminder. Secretary clinton, youre not in the white house yet. Also, donald trump, mr. Nice guy . To have children screaming we want trump, thats very nice. A change in tone. I wont use foul language. Im just not going to do it. A shift in ad strategy. Can the frontrunner remain positive . Lets talk, live in the cnn news room. Good morning. Im carol costello. Thank you so much for joining me. One stage, two candidates and a lot of talk about president obama. Hillary clinton and Bernie Sanders battle for the spotlight during the democratic debate, flexing their muscles on issues like Foreign Policy and health care and sanders wasting no time knocking president obamas legacy. While Hillary Clinton proves shes willing to fight for it. The American People are tired of establishment politics. They want a political revolution. I have fought my entire life to make sure that health care is a right for all people. Before it was called obama care, it was called hillary care. What president obama succeeded in doing was to build on the Health Care System we have. But every proposal that i have introduced has been paid for. Senator sanders plan rests on making sure governors exhibit 23 billion on the first day to make college free. Im a little skeptical about your governor actually caring enough about Higher Education to make any kind of commitment like that. The proposal that i have outlined, you know, should be familiar to you. Its what president obama panned on in 20 08. You opposed him then. Youre mixing apples and oranges. My donors have contributed more than a million and a half donations im proud. People arent dumb. Why does wall street make Huge Campaign contributions . I guess just for the fun of it. Journalists have asked who you listen to on Foreign Policy. It aint thats fine. The kind of criticism weve heard from senator sanders about our president , i expect from republicans. I do not expect from someone running for the democratic nomination to succeed president obama. That is today clinton and sanders are back on the campaign trail and were following all of this with our team of reporters, mark preston in washington and joe johns in South Carolina. I want to begin with you, mark, with more on the debate. Good morning. Good morning. A fight for the Democratic Base we saw last night in milwaukee. Hillary clinton directing her message down to voters in South Carolina where she hopes to build up momentum, specifically with African American voters while Bernie Sanders is taking a longer game, looking at this as a National Campaign and going beyond South Carolina, looking at states out in the midwest and the west. As we saw, sharp exchanges on the idea of income inequality. Hillary clinton talking pragmatism and trying to criticize sanders for lofty promises. Lets listen. What i have said is i will not throw us further into debt. I believe i can get the money that i need by taxing the wealthy and closing loopholes, things that we are overdue for doing, and i think once im in the white house, well have enough Political Capital to be able to do that. Secretary clinton, youre not in the white house yet. Bernie sanders with a little wind at his back having crushed Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire pointing out she may say she has all these ideas when she gets in the white house, but she isnt quite to the finish line. Mark preston, thanks. Now to joe johns in South Carolina. Youre at a clinton rally. Whats on tap today . Reporter thats this afternoon. And Clinton Clinton hillary cli coming here, a crumbling schools event. This part of South Carolina has been called the corridor of shame because of the situation, the schools, the predominantly African American schools with what you can see behind me, the play sets and the bathrooms that dont work and all the things that come along with it. Clinton will try to make the case shes been in the people in this state and the nation for years. Her first job out of law school, well probably hear was with the childrens defense fund. Expecting to see her here, talking about an issue near and dear to the hearts of African Americans in South Carolina. Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders is not here. He is traveling around the country pushing more of a National Campaign. In minnesota today, but will also be talking about race and economics at a high school in minneapolis. And attending a dinner there. Hes taking a bit of a hit in South Carolina in the newspaper from clinton supporters who say he ought to be in this state at this time. The Campaign Says he is eventually going to get here, and its just a question of choosing your battles at this time. Joe johns reporting live in South Carolina this morning. As weve been telling you, secretary clinton took every opportunity to link herself to president obama during last nights debate. And its not hard to see her strategy. Mr. Obama has an astounding 92 Approval Rating among black voters in South Carolina. And mrs. Clinton is not far behind him in a 74 approval among minority voters. Thats well above sanders. Its support clinton will need if she wants a decisive victory in the South Carolina primary. With me to talk about it is a state senator from South Carolina. Welcome, sir. Thank you for having me. Thank you for being here. So when both candidates are in South Carolina for this primary campaigning, what do voters want to see from each of them . Well, i can tell you that secretary clinton is doing the right thing. She is in denmark as joe johns correctly noted, part of the corridor of shame. Weve had a 22 odd court battle to bring Equity Funding to those impoverished School Districts because its built largely on property taxes. The people in South Carolina want a realistic candidate who can champion the cause of working class americans. With respect to the two most major Critical Issues last year in this state, it was secretary clinton who weighed in and that qvc body camera bill. She weighed in on how important that is to bring Greater Transparency to Police Encounters with citizens, and also the Confederate Flag bill and the aftermath of the charleston massacre, she was even before the president in calling for serious gun reform, and the most significant thing about that is why should the gun lobby be immuned to intelligence . I think she has been eloquent on this issue. Its a lot to talk fantasy. I read doc mcstuffen as she operates on lamb yi, to my daughter. Wh thats fiction. What were talking about when we talk about making college free is cushirbing the cost of education. Not just busting down wall street but giving black investment entrepreneurs the opportunity to invest the capital. I think she has a more realistic approach. I should tell people you are a Hillary Clinton supporter, correct . Correct. Correct. I endorsed her earlier this week. Lets talk about sanders for a second. His message is resonating, especially among young people, especially among young people in South Carolina. Young people, even African American young people who carried huge amounts of college debt, what Bernie Sanders says resonates with them. I dont disagree. The question is how do we make college free . And i think secretary clinton has a plan to curb the costs of education. Im in the state legislature. And i can tell you these universities, these public universities are having challenging times economically. Theyre having issues to deal with that, quite frankly, the state is not willing to pony up enough money because we have other priorities. I think secretary clinton has excited young people, so i dont think that that is true. Really . Because the polls the polls dont show that. In South Carolina. On yesterday, the majority leader of House Democrats endorsed her. She has very prominent spokes people. Im not too old myself, but the point is is that she is shes got a realistic message. I realize in iowa and New Hampshire, young people gravitated to her, and i appreciate those people being in part of the we welcome them and secretary clintons issues to be more receptive of how she is going to implement some of the plans that, quite frankly, senator sanders has so eloquently articulated. I think secretary clinton is the person to take us into the next presidency. The fact that the president chose her to be secretary of state means a lot. We love president obama okay. Let me just i have to. One more point. I have to leave it there. Economic empowerment, she has a plan for increasing business, procurement opportunities for minorities. All right. I have to leave it there. Thank you for joining me this morning. Thank you verying for having. Donald trump questions cruzs evangelical credit and then calls him a liar on twitter. Good morning. Reporter good morning. The big prize here in South Carolina is evangelical voters. So today here at job boens university, a christian university, well see the candidates play up their conservative credentials and talk about their faith in a more personal way than we hear on the stump. Well here from brusush, rubio, carson and cruz trying to woo this coveted voting block. For ted cruz, hes trying to recreate his strategy that led to his victory in iowa, really leaning heavily on the support of evangelicals. On the campaign trail hes really been laying into his rivals over this issue, really trying to paint his rivals as, in his words, phony conservatives. Weve seen ted cruz last night in rock hill, South Carolina. He brought up the supreme courts decision to legalize same sex marriage to draw this as a distinction point. He didnt mention rubio or trump by name, but everyone knew who he was talking about to really try to paint both of his rivals as more in line with president obama than the conservative base. Heres what he had to say. One of the more striking things was seeing my two leading competitors in the republican primary, both publicly say following that decision that its the settled law of the land, we must accept it, vu surrender and move on. Those are word for word. The talking points of barack obama. Reporter and a lot of push back from the rivals already on that issue. This will most certainly come up. It will be a big flash point likely in saturday nights debate. All right. Reporting live for us. I cant believe its snowing that hard in South Carolina. Wow. It looks pretty, though. Thanks so much. Sure is. Needless to say, cruzs gay marriage comments didnt sit well with trump. Hours earlier there was this tweet, quote, lying cruz put out a statement trump and rubio are with obama on gay marriage. Cruz is the worse liar, crazy, or very dishonest. Perhaps all 3 in this came after he pulled an ad attacking cruz from the airways because he wanted a more positive campaign. Lets talk about this with michael warren, a staff writer for the weekly standard, a conservative magazine and conservative radio host, Lenny Mcallister with the get it right with lenmy mcallister show. Thank you for being with me. Lenny, donald trump was being more positive, but it seems hes not now, is he . Positive for donald trump, or positive overall . Thats basically the question. Positive for donald trump, shes changed the tone. Hes seen it hasnt worked with evangelicals in ohio. Positive in ohio . No. The gloves are coming off for more of the candidates and donald trump has seen over the last several months hes led in the National Polls because hes been so negative, and then, of course, puts his hands in the air and says i dont want to say that anymore, kind of like the pbomb he had last week. He knows the tactic has worked. Hes hoping it will bring in just enough voters to his side to offset the three to four points he lost by in iowa. He saw more of a base that he didnt expect in iowa. Hes hoping to add on that from the trump magic. I will say the gay marriage issue is probably important like a state in South Carolina, and he wants to get ahead of the accusations. Thats right. Cruz is being somewhat shifty on th this. Rubio came out after the decision and said that while this is the law of the land, that he would appoint Court Appointments who would seek to overturn the law. Cruz isnt being quite forthright about this. As far as trump is concerned, im not sure what his position is today or yesterday on this issue. You know, he said he will change on this. I think trump is picking up on the fact that in South Carolina voters are a little worried about trumps lack of faith or the idea that he might not be as faithful as he says he is. And, of course, all that cursing on the stump probably doesnt sit well with the more conservative crowd in South Carolina. I think hes trying to get ahead of that criticism from cruz and any other candidates. Lenny, it is interesting that donald trump isnt going to appear at the religious forum in South Carolina today like rubio is and cruz is. Why do you think hes not . For the same reason why he didnt show up for the debate right before the iowa caucuses. If youre going to be on the defense in some of these situations, he has made the decision with his strategy not to be on the defense. If you notice, when he has questions that attack him, he tries his best not to say much at the debates. When he can be on the offensive, where he has been extremely successful, taking down jeb bush and other competitors including rab rand paul, one on the fringe and one out. If i can be on the offensive, im fine. If i have to defend something i dont want to talk about, including his position on gay main marriage, the other thing, the Second Amendment. He doesnt really want to talk a lot about Second Amendment and religious rights in South Carolina as a new yorker thats been back on forth on this. Its easier to pull out on some of the issues and not make more fodder that can be in print and eventually be in a campaign ad before next saturday. If donald trump needs evangelical support, and there are a lot of evangelicals in South Carolina, why do you think well see sarah palin soon . Maybe. I dont know. I havent heard if shes coming. Look,y agree with lenny that trump has a real problem with evangelicals, or more socially conservative voters in South Carolina. Not just for the gay marriage issue but on abortion as well. You notice he didnt attend that preiowa debate just as questions were coming out about his past positions on abortion, where he is on that issue. Its an important issue for republicans in South Carolina voting in a republican primary. I would expect if these campaigns have are worth their weight, that they would go after him. I think thats why hes not appearing at places like this conference in greenville. Lenny, could cruz win South Carolina because of all that . Ted cruz should win South Carolina. Ive written an article on this thats going across canada as we speak. He should win South Carolina for pretty much the same reason why he won iowa. Trump has a bump. Rubio is going to be in the mix. Jeb bush is still fledgling along. Ted cruz should be the natural person to win South Carolina. We said that about huckabee and it ended up being mccain. We said it about santorum out of iowa and it wasnt. If somebody can give a Strong Performance and show mettle over the next several days, it might not be what we should expect. However, if we go by expectations, it should be just like iowa. Cruz sits in second place. At tehe end he gets in front of trump. Much like a nascar race. Thanks so much. I have to leave it there. Im carol costello. Thank you for joining me. A tentative deal has been reached that could be the first step to stop the fighting inside syria. Secretary of state, john kerry, says its a cessation of hostilities, but he wont call it a cease fire. Nick robertson is in munich with leaders hammered out the agreement. Hi, nick. Reporter hi, carol. Lets think about the cessation of hostility as sort of a more of pause that if everything goes right, then the political talks can get everyone to a cease fire. Whats supposed to happen immediately as of today, humanitarian assistance to cut parts of the country, parts of syria that are cut off, both government supporters and opposition supporters to get this humanitarian relief. The idea is that spreads across the whole country, builds confidence. One week from today that cessation of hostility is supposed to begin. A lot of concern about russias intentions. This is what they told me. We see hope in this agreement, but we hope to see a big solution for all syria and all syrians. And the key test of this agreement when you look at what happens in the next week, what are the key things youre going to look for to see that its that it meets your expectations. If we see russia stop this air strikes on civilian, this really will, you know, push forward to the political solution, and this is one of the, i believe, if they do it, and if they are really serious about it, this will help a lot and will really save more lives there, and give a big push for the political process. And when will you get back into that political process . In a week, two weeks, three weeks . When . As soon as we see action on the ground there. This is important for us. This is its a test for a good will, and well wait and see what happens there. Reporter thats what this agreement last night was about, getting the peace talks up and running. It is down to the United States and russia to help make sure that that cessation stays in place. Both countries have agreed that they will decide where isis is in the country, where al qaeda is, and those two organizations those two terror groups will continue to be legitimate targets. No cessation for them. Reporting live from germany this morning. Pope francis is in the air over the atlantic. Hes wearing a hat while making his second trip to cuba. This time for a history meeting. This controversial part of his journey will be when he touches down in mexico. On wednesday the pope travels to the border town of quarez. The pope is even holding a cross border mass that hundreds of thousands are expected to attend on both sides of the border. The republican front runner, donald trump, is weighing is on the popes visit, calling the pope political and saying pope francis doesnt understand border safety. I think that the pope is a very political person. I think he doesnt understand the problems our country has. I dont think he understands the danger of the open border that we have with mexico, and i think mexico got him to do it because mexico wants to keep the border the way it is, because theyre making a fortune and were losing. Jeff zeleny takes a closer look at the pros and cons of having mr. Clinton on the campaign trail. Reporter bill clinton loves the campaign trail. This state has been so good to me and to hillary. Reporter hes still the biggest name in democratic politics, one of the most popular former president s. Clinton innostalgia is facing a new test. In his wifes president ial campaign he started with a soft touch. Shes the same girl i fell in love with in law school. Reporter he even refrained from comments on Donald Trumps attacks on his wife. I have no interest in doing anything except helping hillary. Reporter but his tone has gone up into confronting sanders. When youre making a revolution, you cant be too careful about the facts. Her opponent, a champion of all things small and enemy of all things big voted for that bill. Reporter sanders took exception to the criticism. I was disappointed in president clinton. Ive known him for 25 years. I like him and respect him and i hope this campaign does not degenerate. Reporter some democrats are starting to have flashbacks to 20008 when clinton became an Unwelcome Center of attention. Give me a break. This whole thing is the biggest fairy fail itale ive seen. Reporter he diminished the victory in South Carolina. Jesse jackson won South Carolina twice and he ran a Good Campaign and senator obama is. Reporter there are few better advocates for Hillary Clinton than the former president , but as the campaign escalates, some democrats wonder if hell be able to hold his tongue. He knows his words are magnified. Sometimes when im on a stage like this, i wish we werent married, then i could say what i really think. Reporter as both sides try to win over black voters, president clinton is in the spotlight again, a high wire second act. The hotter this election gets, the more i wish i was not the spouse of the next president. Jeff zeleny reporting. Bill clinton has a Campaign Appearance tomorrow. Lets talk about bill clinton and the effect on his wifes campaign. I want to bring in Maria Cordona and ron brownstein. Is bill clinton a plus or a minus . I would say he could be a plus, but so far he hasnt been. I saw him in New Hampshire. I thought his tone and attitude were all wrong. He projected kind of indignation that Bernie Sanders was daring to run against cloirnt Hillary Clinton. And i think what Hillary Clinton really needs and we saw a little bit of last night is to engage sanders more directly on his agenda. Hes basically arguing the ideas arent feasible. She has to argue about whether theyre desirable. Theres no one better to help her on that than bill clinton, but thats not the head hes in. I thought in New Hampshire he wasnt helpful and kind of looked like the establishment, kind of the power of the former president coming down on Bernie Sanders. The tone, the body language, it was all wrong. I was just going to say that, maria. Isnt it all about the tone . Bill clinton might be able to criticize, but it has to do it in a certain way. I think thats right. I think hell realize that moving forward. I believe that he can be one of her biggest assets. There is no one that is a better personal biographer for hillary than bill clinton, and i think moving into the Southern States into the states with more diverse communities, he can also be a huge asset. He is beloved among the African American community. He is beloved among the latino community, and frankly, i think he might be able to make a dent with Younger Voters as well. They seem to have an affinity for older white men with white hair, so lets try bill clinton. Oh, maria. To get out there and talk about hillary. Oh, come on. No. He can talk about no, that was a joke. But im being serious in terms of him being sort of the best one to really be able to explain in very personal terms. Thats what hes best at, connecting with people at the gut level. Talk to them about how she would be the best next president , how she would be their greatest fighter. He did it in 2012 for barack obama and president obama says he was one the greatest assets that he had on the campaign trail in 2012. Look, i think for bill clinton, its important not just to be a character witness. Whats happened is Bernie Sanders has seized control of the Campaign Dialogue and debate. Hes created a construct in which Hillary Clinton looks like either a timid tinkerer. And thats exactly the construct that bill clinton challenged in his own president ial campaigns in the 90s. He basically rejected the idea that the only way to be for big change was to kind of leverage ideologically. Hes having trouble responding to that argument in a Democratic Party thats different than it was in the 19 90s. Bill clinton could be more valuable in shaping the idea that you dont necessarily have to be for a 40 increase in the size of government as she noted last night in order to respond to the challenges that we face. That would be a more useful use of him than this kind of personal, almost peek, who is this guy daring to challenge us which is the wrong message and tone. And there are other things in bill clintons record that people arent happy about like his 1994 crime bill. That makes the Minority Community furious. That would be a liability for the Sanders Campaign too. Senator sanders voted for that crime bill. I think, again, i completely agree with ron. He can be a complete asset for her if he does it in the right way. If he follows in her footsteps from last night in terms of trying to poke holes into the argument about what he wants to do in terms of proposals, how is he going to pay for it and get it done. I also think Foreign Policy is a huge area where president clinton can can really underscore his wifes achievements, his wifes knowledge, his wifes understanding. Deep, deep understanding of Foreign Policy where right now Bernie Sanders has not demonstrated that same kind of understanding in a very important area. All right. I have to leave it there. Thanks to both of you. Still to come in the news room, if latest on a bloody assault with a machete inside ohio. At ally bank, no branches equals great rates. Its a fact.
