Gunfight with police. Listen to the explosions of gunfire captured by a neighbor. Holy [ bleep ] guys, shots rang out. Oh my gosh. Theres cops all over the [ bleep ] yard. Holy [ bleep ]. Just got shot at in my [ bleep ] yard. Chilling, right . Redlands, california, cnns Victor Blackwell is there and has more on this intense shootout with police yesterday. Good morning. Reporter good morning carol. This neighborhood still minutes from sun rise on the following day. It is still shut down. Investigators are back here now looking for clues inside the home of these shooters. We know they spent hours into the evening searching for explosives potentially. They found none. Now the fbi is back inside. But this time they are looking for answers. Breaking overnight, two shooters in San Bernardinos mass shooting identified. Police say the shooters, 28yearold Syed Rizwan Farook and 27yearold Tashfeen Malik were shat dead at the end of this massive man hunt. Overnight sweeping the home for explosives. Until we know the motive or really have something clear evidentiary based on that motive i b dont want to weigh in on that. We have not ruled out terrorism. The massacre began around 11 00 a. M. The countys Health Department was having a Holiday Party at the time. Police say farook was an inspector for the department. He abruptly left the party after a dispute and came back. I heard boom boom boom boom. Investigators say the shooters came equipped, dressed in Tactical Gear. Family members receives gut renched messages from loved ones that an active shooting was taking place. In the office waiting for cops. This was the frightening scene inside. Are you ready . If you are not cool im not walking. Dozens of employees being led to safety by Police Officers. Try to relax. Try to relax. The killers killing 14, wounding 17 more. Prompting police, fbi and s. W. A. T. Teams to lunch a massive man hunt. Hours later a tip leading authorities to the home where they spotted a suspicious suv, result flg that wild police chase. Police engaged in a bloody shootout with this black suv. Both shooters now dead. What is your location . San bernardino and sheddin. One guy in the back of a car. Reporter Law Enforcement sources tell cnn farook is a u. S. Citizen and a relative says he and malik had a six month old baby girl. His brotherinlaw at a loss for words. Im very sad that people lost their lives. And the victims out there, i wish speedy recovery to them. And again, i am in shock. Why would he do Something Like this . I have absolutely no idea. I am in shoek myself. As you hear, shock from the family of syed farook. Fbi agents in and around this home this morning looking for answers to the question of course, why . Maybe there are clues and of course if there are any other persons or maybe a Larger Network involved in the planning of this attack. Carol. Such a confusing case. Victor blackwell well get back to you. Of Course Police are still searching for clues but investigators think yesterdays rampage was well planned. The shooters used multiple weapons, wore Tactical Gear and had explosive devices, both real and possible decoys. Now the question for so many, was it terrorism . Workplace violence . What. Im joined by jim sciutto and jonathan gilliam. Jim, i want to start with you. The shooter in this case, syed farook. He worked at the county office five years. He made good money. 70,000 a year. He was recently married to his wife. They had a newborn baby. He wasnt on the terror watch list or fbis radar. What do authorities make of this . They are trying to make something of it right now. They are not ruling out anything. They have not ruled out terrorism but have also not ruled out Workplace Violence or some combination. Farook, 28, he worked at the Inland Regional Center where the shooting took places. He was at the Holiday Party apparently and left after altercation. His job a holt specialist. Described by his father as religious. Described a mix of western and eastern western and muslim values. Lets talk about the women we now know to be his wife. Tashfeen malik. Rarely do you have multiple shooters. Extremely rare to have women. And having a husband and wife together is unheard of. And they have a six month child who they left with a grandparent that morning. They said they had a doctors appointment and then they went on to do what they did. That is one of the many details that investigators are asking about planning. The weapons. Two long rifles, assault rifles and two handguns. Ar15 type rifles. Many americans might be familiar with them. They are powerful, they are semiautomatic. The handguns, semi automatic as well. Allows you do shot lot of people in a short amount of time. And three pipe bomb explosive type devices possibly attached to a toy a Remote Controlled car, that could have allowed them to move it or detonate it in some way. One of the many things they are investigating. Planning, etc. It is, ill tell you speaking to carol and to a lot of people in this case they are trying to figure out that key question, what motivated this. One detail, he was not known before this to the fbi. He did not have a history at least to the knowledge of the u. S. Law enforcement. Not only that. His floe employees, the very same people at the Christmas Party recently threw him a baby shower. Because the baby is only six months old. So it appears planned, right . But why did this guy o go to the Christmas Party, hang out there for a while, have words with someone, and then leave and come back . Of course that is the big question here, carol. And everything that jim just laid out, we are clearly seeing that this was not a reactionary attack. It wasnt just simply that he went there maybe had an argument so he went home and loaded up an arsenal and made a bunch of ieds and packed a bunch of war bags. That didnt happen. They already had those things planned. They had them these things were planned for really carryon or longterm type of attacks, not just one immediate attack. And i think that they wanted to get out of that area so they could continue to attack. I think what you are seeing here that is kind of throwing everybody off is the fact that there was nothing that gave anybody a little bit of an insight that this may occur with these two individuals. But ill have to tell you from a tactical standpoint that is exactly what different groups that want to stay convert and do attacks. That is the way they will work. They dont go around advertising they want to do a terrorist attack. So this could be a very very successful convert lead up to a planned attack. Okay. So jim most people frankly, some people have their minds made up. They insist this has to be an act of terrorism inspired by ice ice. Police are not so sure. So what will they have to do to determine whether it was domestic terrorism or terrorism inspired by some group over seas. No one in this case has their minds made up. They are leaving all possibilities open. The fact the say dont know for sure. It has signs of the terrorism and Workplace Violence. What are they looking for now . They are going to look into a host of things. Who are they in contact with . Did they have material on computers that spoke of workplace grievances or affinity for extremism, extremist views. International travel they are looking at closely to see if that can be a clue. As well as the kinds of people they were in contact with. We know they were not known rather farook was not known to the fbi but was he in contact with people who were . That is another sign. No one should have their minds made up. The people investigating certainly dont yet. Okay. Before i go to break, i must talk about the tremendous courage of Police Officers who responded to this grizzly scene and im going to play a piece of video for you from inside that county Office Inside that Christmas Party as police were trying to get people out safely. I want you to watch and then after it airs, take us through it. Lets catch. Are you ready . If youre not cool, im not walking. Sir . Go. Go. Keep your hands where i can see them all the way to that deputy. Make a left where the deputys at. Thank you. Thank you. Try to relax everyone. Try to relax. Ill take the bullet before you do. Thats for damn sure. Just be cool, okay . All right jonathan. So you heard that Police Officer, ill take a bullet before you so dont worry. And he kept everyone so calm. That is just so admirable. You know these are tense situations but this is where Law Enforcement and welltrained Law Enforcement really steps up to the plate. And you see how the officers were coordinating with each other. They are also coordinating with outside entities to make sure they are ready for them to bring them out. Because they dont want to just bring them out into an uncontrolled area . My hats are off to them. I think this is the second time in about a week where weve seen in two different locations Law Enforcement handle these situations properly. And in the way they ex fill them out of these buildings. Even those these people have their hands in the air, that is for safety reasons. Make no mistake about it these officers are putting their life on the line for these people and they would not let them get hurt. It is admirable, admirable things to do and hats off. They did a great job. Absolutely. Thanks both of you. We have to talk about the victims in this case. 14 People Killed. 17 others wounded. This powerful image captured moments after the rampage. Family and friends hand in hand praying. One of victims sister spoke with knbc and well hear from her in a minute. First dr. Sanjay gupta outside one of the hospitals this morning. What can you tole us . W we know here at arrow head medical facility there are 16 patients being treated here. Were hoping to get an update a little later on. There is another hospital, another Trauma Center not too far. Low melinda. This is going to be ongoing for some time. These are significant injuries as you know. And i want to put a punctuation mark on something you were talking about with regard to Law Enforcement. Some of the First Responders that go in have to go in to a situation that is still active. In years past they would go into a cold air first and be taken in and its challenging to do that. It costs too much times sometimes. So Law Enforcement also many times escorting First Responders into these situations so they can take care of the injured. It is remarkable work. Id happened with some of the people in the hospital here behind me at the same time. Also denise peraza, her sister, spoke about what happened to denise. She called her from the scene before she was even cared for. Take a listen. She said steph, i was shot. And she was crying. And so i knew she was serious. And i was just like what happened . And she just said she was at a work thing and the shooters came in and she was shot and she was scared. And she said i just wanted to tell you that i love you. And that and then she said she had to go and hung up. As soon as the gunfire started everyone dropped to the floor and they were underneath desks and she was trying to shield herself with a chair with the man next to her and then all of a sudden she said she just felt it like go in through her back and luckily, you know, the shooters werent there for too long and they were able to get her out of there quickly. Its remarkable carol. We dont hear that thing often. But she felt it going through her back, the bullet. Shes expected to be okay in the hospital behind me. That gives a little insight into what was happening and also how quickly some of the response arrived. I was just thinking that you hear that kind oaf story all too often these days. It is just its just become sadly familiar. Dr. Sanjay, go ahead. Reporter yeah. It has become familiar. I just remarkable to have the presence of mind to call your Family Member at the time this is happening. I just youre right. I mean, 355 Mass Shootings this year, i mean more than days of the year. It has become too familiar. And ill tell you. In hospitals the protocols have changed the type of training doctors and nurses go through has changed. The hospital was on lockdown throughout the zieincident. So you can imagine. We see the headlines but what goes on a lot of times behind the scenes. They have to take care of people while risking their own lives to do so. Again carol, we talked about it earlier. It is truly remarkable work. All right. Dr. Sanjay gupta. Thank you so much. I want to take you do washington now because the attorney general of the United StatesLoretta Lynch is speaking right now. We are monitoring her remarks. Actually lets dip in right now to hear what shes talking about. Let me simply say that whatever the results of this investigation, we county know a lot about you. Dont know a lot right now. But one thing is clear. Violence like this has no place in this country and in this nation. [ applause ] this is not what we stand for. This is not what we do. This is not what we work for. It is not what we live for. It is antithet cal to our values. I dont have any operational updates at this time. Those will come later from local authority t, but i do want to express my deepest condolences ands ask that you join me in standing with our colleague, friends and partners in San Bernardino suffering with this and add all of our thoughts and prayers here today now at this time. Because were at the point where these issues have come together really like never before in Law Enforcement thought and in our nations history and it gives us a wonderful opportunity and a wonderful moment to really make significant change. You all are such a distinguished group of advocates, of lawmakers, judge, experts. And were all here to talk about today how we can ensure that our legal system serves every american faithfully, fairley, regardless of their economic systems. Let me pose the beginning question of the day what is the price of justice . What is the price of justice . Is some 52 years after gideon versus wainwright was decided we are still still seeing ways in which one of our most cherished ideals are overlayed with costs that are really bourn by those who can least afford to pay. And few questions are more deserving of our time and attention. I think this is really one of the leading criminal justice questions of the day. Because the work we do in this area automated voice to file a claim, please state your name. Carnie wilson. Thank you. Can you hold on . Hold on for one more day really . Hey, i know theres pain. Why do you lock yourself up in these chains . This would be so easy if you had progressive. Our mobile app would let you file a claim and help you find one of our Service Centers where we manage the entire repair process. Things will go your way if you hold on. Im Carol Costello live in San Bernardino california this morning. You can see to my right we have pictures of the social Services Center about 60 miles east of los angeles, where the terrible shooting went down yesterday afternoon. When syed farook and his wife opened fire inside. Killing 14 people. The entire community reeling. Witnesses and families reliving the horror just after it unfolded. She said the guy shot next came in next to her office and i guess started shooting. They locked himself in, in her office. They seen bodies on the floor. And she said right now balance are taking people out in stretchers. We lad to come out with our hands up. And be escorted across the street to the golf course and stood there for hours. Hours. Witnessing clothing of deceased ones in the street. People crying. Coworkers crying. Us wanting to get to our children, families and loved ones. You know, the sun is coming up here. I wish you could see behind me how beautiful the San Bernardino area. Is you can see the mountains in the background and it is just sad that i have to be here talking about such an ugly tragic event this morning. On the phone with me now, a reporter with the San Bernardino sun. Welcome. Reporter thank you. You were on the scene yesterday. Tell me what you saw. I got so, i got to the scene just before they set up a perimeter. And when i got there, s. W. A. T. Teams from all over the area were arriving. They put on their body armor and they started moving towards the buildings. I eventually was pushed into a warehouse directly across the street from the Inland Regional Center. And from there i could see people inside being escorted out. Hands in the air. You know, and they they the police pretty much, it was controlled chaos. They did a fantastic job clearing, getting people out. Doug, as a member of the community, like, try to divorce yourself from the newspaper for a minute and tell me what effect this is having on your community. Well, you know, i grew up here. [ clears throat ] this is tragic not just for the entire community, but for the entire country. This is something thats going to be felt for a long time. There is people that are just they are scared. You know, so many of these kind of tragedies happen. Sometimes i feel like americas becoming numb. But then when a new one course there is just this intense sadness and sort of a feeling of helplessness. I dont know if its more hopelessness or anger that its senseless. You know, i spoke to somebody yesterday a Police Officer. And he said that this is and he spent three years in iraq as a soldier. And he said this is the worst hes ever seen. So, you know, i think just the senseless violence. It is plaguing the society. Police are still trying to figure out why these two people rushed into a Christmas Party and opened fire. Hopefully they will have more answers. In a little while this morning. Doug, saunders, i appreciate it. We have a pattern now of Mass Shootings in this country that has no parallel anywhere else in the world. The deadliest moosz shooting in the United States and third in less than a week. Will over the weekend the president did weigh in if you will on that issue of prayers and guns. And he did so in a statement that was issued after the planned parenthood shooting in colorado. It said in part if we are going to offer up thoughts and prayers again. For god knows how many times with a truly clean conscious and we have to do something about the easily accessibility about the war on the streets with our people. He did talk about that. The attorney general speaking here in the white house complex to a group of federal and state officials about criminal Justice Reform. She did not talk specifically about gun control but did say in part that violence has no place in this country. This is not what we stand for. Now the president speaking in that interview with cbs news last night lets talk and listen just a little bit to what he had to say. There are steps we can take to make americans safer. And that we should come together. In a bipartisan basis that every level of government can make these rare as opposed to normal. Dont know if we are going to hear more from the president today. He is expected to meet with some members of congress to talk also about criminal Justice Reform. Perhaps a chance to weigh on on that issue with people from the hill. Carol back to you. Thank you joe. Lets get the other perspective. That Republican Forum just getting under way. What is ted cruz saying, jeff . Good morning carol. Ted cruz is the first republican president ial candidate who will be addressing this gathering of republican jewish coalition. Which starting with a moment of silence. This mass shooting are starting to become a sound track of this the campaign. Senator ted cruz said there is still yet to be a lot known from this but he drew a distinct line with this and radical islamic terrorism. Take a listen. And at this point, the political correct double streak that comes from the Obama Administration has gone beyond the point of ridiculous. When the president stands up and says, the Islamic State isnt islam islamic. Thats just nutty. [ applause ] we need a president who will call the enemy by its name, radical islamic terrorism, and we will defeat it. So carol, even before knowing all the details of the shooting, even before knowing what was in the hearts and minds of these suspect, senator cruz took an opportunity here to directly criticize this administration. Well hear from all of the republican president ial candidates as the day unfolds. Carol. Well certainly check back. Still to come, several weapons and explosives are recovered. Police are still piecing together a motive after yesterdays shooting. Syed farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik were killed after a shoot with police. Chris cuomo, ill bring you in here. You have been covering the story more some time and that is a grizzly picture. That is the result of the shootout that started with an officer taking fire. A the local Police Officer had gone to a home to a door knock. While he was there the suv comes across him and speeds off. Now it becomes a chase. Then you have about two dozen Police Officers involved putting out a lot of speuppressive fireo stop this. Really brave police work when taking fire and you know the people inside are already murderers. And supposedly the woman was driving, the wife, and the man, the husband, fareed farook was shooting at Police Officers out of the window. He was taking fire. They then brought this these things which were controversial. They are dealing with the militarized weapons and they brought in two of them and pinched the car and took out the suspects. And chase a third person from the scene. They are not related to this. The worst is over. But the investigation is just begun. So i i want to bring in im sorry. Grant white is im sorry grant. I forgot your name for a moment. A former s. W. A. T. Officer. I want you to take me through this police chase and how police managed this without harming anyone in the neighborhood. Shots are being fired from the car. Were Police Shooting back at this moment . Of course they are. How do you keep the neighborhood safe . Fantastic job on the shoot out and the chase portion. However i would have liked to see much more aggressive on taking it out. What i mean by is that is our agency developed and we use the pit technique. And the next control come out in ram the side of them and disable the car and hopefully the people inside. And following patrol cars would pull up and engage in any battle left. Hats off. Great job what they did. Unfortunately our agency has had three Mass Shootings so we are much more aggressive on the way we do business here in colorado. And to complicate matters, the suspects are throwing what appeared to be explosives out of the car. Absolutely. Sounds like they had pipe bombs. So one more consideration. And certainly when s. W. A. T. Got there they used the bumper shield to pull up on there and remove the bodies, open that up. Assuming there was going to be a bomb go off and that would be a way to protect them. You have to worry about so many things. And especially now when Mass Shootings occur. You have to worry about bombs all the time. Just insane. Lets talk about motive here. Because everybody is wondering why this happened. Was it terrorism . Was it Workplace Violence . A lot of people have already made up their minds, chris. Loretta lynch t attorney general spoke up this morning. We dont know why this happened yet. They have to gather all the information. Americans have to be patient. Well were also in a very low Information Society when it comes to these kind of cases. Investigators are very clear. All my sources say the same thing. Slow down. We dont know. And it could be both. You could have had something triggered in this guy about his Workplace Environment that wound up giving him some fuel to a fire that was coming from another place. Theres very little change that what happened here was spontaneous. Maybe he was spontaneously angry at this Holiday Party t Christmas Party. The idea of the tactical ware, having weapons they had gotten years ago. Having explosive devices you cant just make in an incident in all likelihood. The cover story to the grandmother. Remember they handed off the six month old to the grandmothers saying we have a doctors appointment. And the exit is also confusing. If there was a terrorist act usually what they want to do is kill as many as possible, fight the police and then kill themselves. They didnt have the means or the aptitude or the interest. Right . And then they left. They left but stayed local. Very confusing. But they are very interested in who else knew . They dont believe it begins and ends with these two individuals. Thanks both of you. City affected by gun violence. The frequency of the incidents highlighted during this report from the bbc. Just another day in the United States of america. Another day of gunfire, panic and fear. Thats how this incident is being reported overseas. The bbc calling it just another day of gun violence in the United States. According to at least one unofficial tally the numbers support that claim. Shooti shootingtracker. Com which describes Mass Shootings as incidents where four or more people including the gunman says San Bernardino was 355th, 355th mass shooting this year alone. It was also, according to shooter trackers definition, the second worst mass shooting in the United States. The first took place early wednesday morning in suvanau georgia, where a gunman killed one and wounded three others. So, lets talk about guns in america. John lott is the founder and author of more guns, less crimes. Good morning, john. Good morning. John, you know guy rights advocates and those in favor always talk at purposes. They cant seem to get on the same page. I guess i dont feel like having an argument with you this morning. I kind of just want to find out how we can stop these shootings together. How can both sides come up with a plan together . Well, sure. I mean, if you have proposals you want to talk about, im happy to do so. Part of it is inflammatory claims, such as the two you just went through from the bbc, as well as the tracking numbers there. I mean, first of all, these occur oh, john, lets be serious. There are too many Mass Shootings in this country. There are too many shootings in this country. Weve seen several in the past couple weeks. Lets just concentrate on that. A lot of gun violence in this country. We can all agree on that. But the point was, i was just saying in order theres a reason why you started with those two things. Im saying, just to be accurate, europe has about the same rate of mass public shootings as we do here in the United States. France, this year, has had 508 People Killed or wounded in mass public shootings. In the entire obama presidency, there has been a total of 424. This tracking number that you just had, the vast majority of those are gang fights, which are bad. Gang fights over drug turf are bad things. But its i think misleading. Lets just concentrate on the matter at hand. Gun violence in the United States and how we can stop it it and prevent these Mass Shootings and prevent mentally imbalanced people from getting a hold of guns. How can we all do that . How can we all get on the same page . Right. Well, i think youre going to have a hard time stopping terrorists or others from getting a hold of weapons. If you really believe someone is a danger to others, you should lock them up. Telling them they will not be able to legally buy a gun when the individuals such as the ones in San Bernardino, i wouldnt be surprised if they were planning this a year or more in advance, its very common for these types of mass public shootings to be planned at least six months. Sometimes even a couple years in advance. If somebodys planning that long in advance, theyre going to make the pipe bombs and get a hold of other the weapons that are there and this is very difficult to stop them. The question is, what is your backup plan . What do you do when you cant stop these individuals from making these types of weapons . I hope were beginning to get to the place where we allow individuals to go and allow and defend themselves. California is extremely difficult for anybody to go and get a concealed carry permit to go and defend themselves against these types of attacks. The type of attack that occurred at planned parenthood on friday or this or at the oregon school. But lets be honest about one thing, john. Two of the weapons that these suspects used were purchased legally. In fact, all the guns as far as we know were purchased legally. Even though tight gun controls in the state of california, its still easy to buy a highpowered weapon in the United States. Thats because there are so many guns out there. Over the thanksgiving day holiday, 185,000 firearms were purchased. Thats a record for the holiday season. Lots and lots of people have guns in this country. Yet these Mass Shootings keep happening. So, how can more guns be the answer . Well, the question is, where people are allowed to have guns. If you ban guns from certain areas, people like these killers dont, arent stopped by the bans. The people who obey the laws are law abiding good citizens who are no longer able to defend themselves, who are essentially sitting ducks. You make it safer for the attackers to go and commit these crimes because they dont have to worry about lawabiding citizens being able to stop them. All right. I have to leave it there, john. They were throwing what appeared to be explosive devices from the car. And as you can see, this is how it ended. Victor blackwell is in that neighborhood in redlands, california, with more. Good morning, victor. Carol, good morning to you. The fbi here at the scene now going in and out of that home searching for, as you said, clues to why this happened. We know that late last night bomb technicians gave the allclear saying there were no explosives inside the home. Lets take a closer look at a car parked outside. You can see the hood, door, trunk, hood open. Bomb technicians in full gear searched that vehicle for any explosive there. They found none. Now, we are getting a clear picture of what happened during those terrifying hours, but still so many questions about why. Breaking overnight two shooters in San Bernardinos mass shooting identified. The shooters 28yearold syed rizaan farook and Tashfeen Malik were shot dead. A s. W. A. T team sweeping this home for explosives. Until we know the motive or have a clear, something clear evidentiary based on that motive. We have not ruled out terrorism. The massacre began around 11 00 a. M. At the Inland Regional Center. The countys Health Department was having a Holiday Party at the time. Farook was an inspector for the center. They think he came back alongside malik. Armed with rifles and two semi automatic handguns the shooters came equipped, dressed in Tactical Gear. Family members receiving gut wrenching messages from loved ones that an active shooting was taking place. Shooting at my work. People shot in the office waiting for cops. Reporter this was the frightening scene inside. Are you ready . Reporter dozens of employees being led to safety by Police Officers. I want you to relax. Ill take a bullet before you do. Reporter killing 14, injuring 17 more. The pair fleeing in a black suv launching a massive manhunt. Hours later a tip leading authorities to a redland home resulting in a wild police chase. About two miles from Inland Regional Center, police engage in a bloody shootout with this black suv. Both shooters now dead. What is your exact location. Were at San Bernardino and San Bernardino and shedden. One guy in the back of a car. Reporter Law Enforcement sources tell cnn farook is a u. S. Citizen and they had a 6monthold baby girl. I spoke to him a week ago. Very sad that people lost their lives. I wish speak to them and, again, i am in shock. Why would he do Something Like this . I have absolutely no idea. Im in shock myself. Those agent have been inside and outside this home for several hours today. Weve not yet seen them remove any evidence from the home. Again, this is very early in this investigation. So, we can expect this neighborhood to be shut down for quite some time. Carol . All right. Victor blackwell reporting live from redlands, california. In the meantime, new discoveries could help investigators piece together more information about this terrible shooting. Officials say, officials tell cnn syaed Rizwan Farook and his wife, Tashfeen Malik had rifles and handguns. Two were purchased legally and traced to farook. The suspect shot and killed 14 people. Officials believe the suspects were going to detonate them remotely or they didnt work or decided not to do it in the end. Lets talk about all of this with retired atf explosive enforcement anthony may and analyst jonathan gillien. Welcome to both of you. I want to take our viewers to the neighborhood where the suv was shot at because there are yellow postit notes all over that vehicle and police are examining every piece of evidence that they put a postit note on. Jonathan, can you take me through what investigators are doing right now . Sure. Can i just say one thing, carol, before i answer that question. Anybody who sees or is in the vicinity where they can actually hear gunshots like that should not risk their lives to take a video of it. Youre in the death zone there. That kid is lucky hes still alive. With those highpowered rifles they could have gone through cars, body armor and through him. Even through a house. They have to be very careful and i dont want to see that repeated. With that being said. Right now what investigators are looking at in this particular place right here. Every little single thing that comes out of this vehicle is an evidentiary piece that can help identify the movements of these individuals. If its something that they bought. A piece of equipment that they had. Maybe theres, you know, things that they used in the attack. Theyll start to pull those things out, as well as possible dna of other people that could have been in that vehicle. Anything that they can use to help gather pieces for this investigation is very critical. So, last night you saw a very rapid response. Now youre seeing a very slow and methodical investigation. Thats the way it has to be done because, ultimately, you have to remember if there are other people involved, this is going to have to go to court. And thats one of the big reasons why we go through this. The picture not only helps us determine what else could happen, but it also prepares in case theres support mechanisms or other people involved that we can take to court. And, anthony, there were explosives involved in this case. Some of them were fake pipe bombs. Some of them were real. There were supposedly some explosives set off by a Remote Controlled toy car. So, perhaps that is also why police are moving very slowly to collect evidence in this case. Well, thats correct. And that was why they were moving slowly last night. Working through this vehicle and working through the house because they had no idea what they were going to be coming up on. Now, the issue of Remote Control of a device, paelsh especially case, Remote Control toy cars, thats really old technology. Thats something weve seen for years. Obviously, in this last decade, Remote Control means or better initiated with cell phones. Now, the issue of whether these things worked. Whether they chose not to initiate them. Is really immaterial at this point. I have been told there was some manufacturing flaws to the devices as to why they didnt work. The fact is that there are devices at all. These Mass Shootings are evolving to a situation now where were seeing explosives routinely. In this particular case, were seeing explosives with an attempt to initiate them. What does that mean . Well our plan or our procedure for these active shooter situations is to barricade in place. This could be an evolutionary process to counter that. If i cant shoot you, if you wont come out of hiding, ill leave explosive devices behind. So, this could be an evolutionary process in this whole mass shooting scenario, you know, the cat and mouse game has been played out, unfortunately, on american soil. Just so sad, anthony and jonathan, thanks to both of you. Want to bring in tim hilliard right now. He witnessed the shooting yesterday at the Inland Regional Center. Thats the social Services Center where that shooting took place. You were in the building next door, correct . Correct. I was in building two at the Regional Center. Take me through your day. I know you have video to share, too. Well watch that as you talk. Take us through the day. I got a text. I was in my office listening to music, doing paperwork. Arguing with my coworker and having fun. We heard a lot of stampeding and running and on the third floor, a lot of shaking going on. I have a lot of bobbleheads on my desk and they were shaking and at that time i got a text from one of my colleagues saying there was an active shooter on the ground. Somebody is Walking Around with the gun and its Regional Center everything may happen or may not happen. I went out of my office and i see people running down the halls heading here and heading towards the Conference Room and i directed myself to the Conference Room to go in and i saw a few of my program managers, directors and theyre screaming, crying, panicking and at that time i realize its more serious than the leads. So, im asking what is happening, whats going on . I dont know anything, im in my office. At that time could you hear the gunshots. I was in my office on the north side of the building and the office is on the south side. Its like why are people running and crying. Why are you crying . Its not that much. Not that much going on. Bodies on the ground. Me being me instinktually i wanted to see and be accurate on whats going on, as well i do a lot of photo journalists myself and i work with task force in San Bernardino for the School District and where want tad see. You ran outside of your building. No, i went to the other side on the third floor Office Windows to look down at the situation. Because im on the third floor. So, i head over to the window and i look and i dont see much. So i go further down a few more offices and i look and i see two bodies. One hunched over on a bench, looked like a male to be deceased and another female about 15 feet away laying in a pool of blood. At that time this is a county Office Building. That had to be surreal. Different. I knew at time there was a function down there. So, i knew that it was and other countries and use that facility for the auditorium. I had people down there. So, at this point, police are not letting you out of your building, correct . Right now theyre concentrating on Building Three because of active shooters. S. W. A. T team is going in the back. And in the front doors. Theres about four doors, at least, to get into that auditorium. Theyre just going for an active shooter and going on the roof, raiding that building, mainly, to get it. As well, theyre at that time. Did you ever think of taking cover in your own building or just watching this scene unfold. I was recording it and just watch it up fold. Could you believe what was happening . In ways, yes, because of the training weve been going through with sandy hook with the School District. Weve been going through training, active shooting. Every quarter we have a seminar to work with homeland security, fbi. So, to me, just instinctual making sure everything is okay. Im that kind of person id rather see it come. My colleagues are barricaded in Conference Rooms at that time. Its good you went through that training. The next day, the morning has come. Really hasnt set in yet. Slept an hour so far and then on the bus ride that we had going over was a little surreal with everything hitting. Watching the news last night for four hours. Just comparing it to the biggest at sandy hook. Does this, how it went down make sense to you . This married couple. The guy goes to his Christmas Party and leaves come comes back. I was in my head going through certain things and just thinking disgruntled employee and other situations and scenarios. Everything just working out to see that it had to be planned out. The way they came in armored and the way they had situations. It was planned in my head and just working every angle i could. My major psychology. I was just working every angle that i could to go through. But just overall, people asking. What do you think this or think that. I dont think its related to anything around that. I think people were assuming. I think it was personal vendetta. Not towards anyone in general. Just towards his colleagues. Police are trying to work on a motive, they havent come up with one yet. Tim hilliard, thanks for sharing your story. I appreciate it. The reaction from the campaign trail. What the candidates are saying about this mass shooting. President obama also speaking out about thet shooing in an interview with cbs, he talked about the frequency of gun violence in the United States. We have a pattern now of Mass Shootings in this country that has no parallel anywhere else in the world. Our senior washington correspondent joe johns is at the white house with more on this. Good morning, joe. Good morning, carol. The president did talk about that in that interview here at the white house. He also talked about one of the gun control issues hes pushing that notion of not allowing people on nofly lists, on watch lists to be able to purchase guns. Very important to the president who seems quite frustrated right now with the inaction on capitol hill. Administration also getting a chance to weigh in on the San Bernardino shootings this morning with the attorney general speaking at the Old Executive Office building right next to the white house. Speaking to a group of federal and state leaders. Talking about criminal Justice Reform. Heres what she said about the situation in california. And let me simply say that whatever the results of this investigation, we dont know a lot right now. But one thing is clear that violence like this has no place in this country and in this nation. This is not what we stand for. This is not what we do. This is not what we stand for. The president is expected to meet later today with members of congress. And also going to talk about criminal Justice Reform in that meeting, but there is certainly a possibility that he will be able to express some more of his views about gun control at that time. Carol . Lall right, joe johns reporting live from the white house. Much more from San Bernardino and an update on those injured in the attack. Well take you there, next. It. I cant believe i got it. My lil buddy . And what if this happened again . I was given warfarin in the hospital but i wondered if this was the right treatment for me. Then my doctor told me about eliquis. Eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots and reduces the risk of them happening again. Not only does eliquis treat dvt and pe blood clots, but eliquis also had significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. Knowing eliquis had both. Turned around my thinking. Dont stop eliquis unless your doctor tells you to. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. If you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Eliquis treats dvt pe blood clots. Plus had less major bleeding. Both made switching to eliquis right for me. Ask your doctor if its right for you. It begins from the the second were born. Er. You can see every scrap of evidence and shell casings are being numbered and examined. The married couple at the center of this massacrer with not on Law Enforcement radar. Neither, local authority werent aware of these people either. Why would Syed Rizwan Farook and his girlfriend Tashfeen Malik commit the worst massacre since sandy hook. 14 killed, 17 wounded. Was it Workplace Violence or terrorism . Before they both could be questioned they died in the gunfight with police. Listen to the explosion of gunfire captured by a neighbor. Shots rang out. Oh, my gosh. Guys, outside my house right now. Cops all over the yard. Well, we know very little about the motives of these two shooters. Police say its too soon to rule anything out. I am really being careful because we all know when these types of things happen, weve seen this happen time and time again. A lot of information comes out in the first day in the first couple days and that information changes significantly in the days that follow. Until we have a motive or something clear evidentiary based on that motive, i dont want to weigh in on that right now. We have not ruled out terrorism. Before i introduce my guest, president obama will make a statement shortly. Were also expecting a live News Conference from one of the local hospitals where the 19 people are recovering. We hope well take you live to the hospital when that happens, too. Okay. So, let me introduce my guest. Cnn chief National Security correspondent brian leaven is here and the center from the and kasheem the spokesman for the Muslim Community usa and harvard fellow. Welcome to all of you. Jim, i want to start with you. Because a lot of americans have made up their mind that this was terrorism and somehow it was connected to isis. Some americans arent so sure. Maybe it was Workplace Violence and fueled by something else. What are authorities saying . Heres what authorities say. Number one, fact is they dont know. They just dont know at this point. So, people have to keep an open mind because the investigators are keeping an open mind. That said, they are leaving both possible explanations out there as credible at this point. Its possible that it was Workplace Violence or that it was some sort of domestic terrorism or International Terrorism or, and this is interesting, this would be interesting, carol, some combination of the two. Did one inspire the other . Was there both a grievance and some affinity to international extremism. The fact is at this point they dont know. What they do know is this. You look at all the signs here that there was clear preparation for this. Was a momentary crime of passion . Just seems very unlikely because, one, you had two people involved. The number of weapons you had involved. Two rifles, handguns, the ammunition and the explosive devices that would have had to be manufactured prior to this. That wouldnt happen in the time between this apparent altercation at this Holiday Party and then the shooter coming back and returning a short time later. So, there was preparation here. Whatever inspired it, the attackers took time to be ready to carry out this rampage. All right. Brian, im going to ask another question. Im a little distracted because we understand the News Conference at the Loma Linda Community Hospital is about to begin. We see officials there standing before the mikes. I dont think they officially started yet. Lets listen in to see. That is ker ry. This morning just by way of a briefing on the five patients that we have. We have two still in Critical Condition and three that are in fair condition. There were a lot of questions last night. I stood behind our press individual and watched the questions come in. You guys do a wonderful job with what you do, but, please, understand our job is to preserve and protect the confidentiality and privacy of our patients. That is why, of course, we dont get more information as to the status of the patients or where theyre at at this point in time. I want to take a moment to say a special thank you to our staff. Yesterday was a very, very difficult day for them. In the midst of all the challenges with dealing with trauma patients, we had a called in bomb threat to the institution. That always is something we take seriously. You never know whether its credible or not. So our practice and policy is to always take those matters seriously. I took time to physically walk through the units and give a sense of encouragement to our staff. The remarkable thing is, they all were there. They were all hands on. None of them shied away from their responsibilities and i am incredibly grateful for the dedication of our staff through very difficult times. Its also stressful to have officers with assault rifles going unit to unit looking for devices and that is just something that we train for. Its something that our staff understands, but its never easy to go through when youre facing that in the midst of Everything Else thats going on. Especially during the pared epe time when there are still active shooters at large. Youre a level one Trauma Center. How many patients were you prepared to take in through your triage that was set up . Its a good question. The answer is as a level one were prepared to deal with systemwide or countywide emergencies. We bring in an event like this, all hand on deck. A call that goes out to all trauma surgeons and all support staff and all nursing staff and so we literally had out in front of the hospital a large group of our professionals that were prepared to take multiple casualties if that were the case. Fortunately, through our triage system, they were able to distribute among a number of area hospitals. But we could have handled many more patients if that were necessary. You then divide the line between optimal care and that that is essential to stabilize the patients at that time. Youre such an intrinsic part of this community. There for 14 victims that were deceased that were not transported here. Can you just speak to the emotional nature of this community and how you guys are feeling based on this mass shooting that took place. Well, regrettably, the inland empire had its struggles over the years with gun violence. Certainly weve struggled at times with gang violence. Earlier this year we had eight shootings, not more than a half a mile away from this institution. So, our staff have trained, theyve prepared. Theres nothing that you can do, really, to prepare for an event like yesterday with the eemoteg Emotional Trauma that comes along with that. You dont know what is coming next and you dont know what the next event will be. The uncertainty to try to react to that. I know you guys should have made a special room for the Family Members who are coming to be with their loved ones. I know myself and the loved ones. Did you see that last night, some of these Family Members spending an allnight vigil for their Family Members. We try to be very sensitive to the families and set up a special place for them to get updates and information. They cant initially visit their loved ones at times because, in some cases, their loved ones would be in surgery, but an opportunity for our clinicians to meet with them and give them updates and try to provide comfort and compassion during a very difficult time. And we have done that before and, again, its something that regrettably we have had to deal with on a number of different occasions through the years when there have been significant shooting events in this region. I understand you cant give specific details about the nature of the injuries or the nature of their conditions, but realistically speaking, what are we looking at as far as recovery . Optimistic about recovery at this point . Well, honestly, the story for each of those patients is their story to tell. And we are very guarded about giving details other than to say the technical classification, which we have given between critical, stable and fair and beyond that, i will leave it for the patients themselves to tell their own stories. Some of them already have communicated on facebook. But thats their story to tell, their time, their place, their way of communicating. We simply are focused on Clinical Care and preserving in every sense of the word their privacy. Kerry, multiple sources in Law Enforcement confirmed in the shooting with the suv was transported here. But we had cameras here at the time. Can you elaborate on that or reconfirm what we already know. I will leave it to Law Enforcement to describe when and if and how their officers have been treated and where they have been treated. Again, for obvious reasons, were being very careful about preserving and protecting the privacy of our patients. You probably observed yesterday we put up sheets. Why did we do that . Because you have very, very sophisticated cameras and we be careful to protect facial ide identi identity. For loved ones and spouses and others to see on the news their loved one when they werent even yet aware that their loved one was in the hospital is a very traumatic event. Were being sensitive to that and thats why. Shed a little light on the range of injuries that youre seeing . I know youre not able to compromise privacy. You have the best characterization as multiple gunshot wound. All the patients are gunshot wound victims and we have trauma surgeons that, as i said, regrettably, have had a lot of exposure and experience to gunshot victims. So, all of them suffered one version or another of gunshot wounds. Ill be careful not to describe the details of those injuries. Just, again, because its the patients story to tell. Will your family be available to speak. We will inform the family and we have that the press would like to speak tathem. Its their decision and we will protect them and their confidentiality and privacy as long as they choose that. When they choose to speak to the press, we, of course, will let them know the press would like to speak to them. Its not our decision. Have you spoken to any of the families . What has been communicated to you . I think you can see it all over the news and you guys have done a wonderful job reporting shock, trauma, stress. All of the words you can think of. I cant think of anything worse than having a loved one in a room trapped with active shooters and theres no way out. And all of the Family Members, of course, are struggling in their own way and their own method of dealing with the very difficult circumstances they face. Some of them have loved ones that have, as weve said, more manageable injuries because of nature of the classification. Some of the Family Members are dealing with loved ones that have very, very serious injuries. And thats why they were brought here because of the serious nature of their injuries. So, people deal with things different ways. But theres no question that the shock and trauma and stress is evident all over the inland empire. Its evident in our staff and evident in people that have emailed me from literally around the world expressing condolences and support and appreciation for the care that weve been able to render during a very difficult, difficult time. Kerry, security well, as you saw yesterday, we had significant security and Police Presence available. We were not advised by Law Enforcement to lock down the facility. So, we did not lock down the facility yesterday. That was was because there was no information to an immediate threat to the institution. So because we are a level one Trauma Center, there are still automobile accidents that happen and strokes and heart attacks. We remained opened during that entire period of time to try to address other patients that may need immediate care. We diverted nonessential away in accordance with inland county regional guidelines system for managing events like this. But we still maintained our ability to treat other types of patients. That is why we did not go on lock down. Do you project them being released any time soon . Whats next . Well, actually, even though i carry the title of chief executive officer of the institution, they actually dont let me practice medicine. I cant answer the question of when they may be released. That will be a decision of the medical professions as to how and when they will release the patients. Am i going to be given any updates . Would be glad to do that and, certainly, well pass along to Family Members the desire of the press to speak with them and, again, its their decision if they wish to speak. Any other questions i can answer . Im sorry we have two in critical, three in fair. Any other questions i can answer for you . I also want to take a moment to say a special word of thanks to Law Enforcement. They were here yesterday. Very engaged with us. Conferring with us as to the status of the situation. As you all know, very fluid yesterday and we are incredibly grateful to the work of the San BernardinoPolice Department, as well as the support agencies that provided Additional Support to them. They have been a remarkable organization to work with. I watch the police chief for San Bernardino last night on the news and just three days ago he and i were in a noshave november event that the Police Department put on for the benefit of our Cancer Center and remarkable, wonderful people to work with and im deeply grateful for the service that they give to this community. Thank you very much. All right. Just going to breakaway from this live News Conference. Loma Linda University medical center. Very precious Little Information given out in this press conference. Many thanks to public officials, including police. Goes without saying, but our thoughts and prayers are with the Family Members. We have provided a variety of services to them. Our Chaplain Department has been actively engaged. And it certainly is part of our mission to provide for all of the needs of our patients and we have been actively engaged in meeting their needs on every level, including those that request thoughts and prayers. We have directly communicate would them about that. So, again, thank you for being here this morning. Thank you. All right. Were going to breakaway. He mentioned four patients that i could hear, two of them in Critical Condition. Two of them in fair condition. Hes not giving out any more information about the patients inside that hospital. Its up to them to share their stories. Many of them, he said, have already shared their stories on facebook, but, again, its up to the individual patients and their families to share what happened to them yesterday. That terrible day. All right, i want to bring back in my guests brian leaven at cal state San Bernardino and kaseen. Welcome to both of you. Brian, everybody is wondering why. Why did these people do this terrible thing yesterday. This married couple, they just had a baby. Sixmonthold baby. The husband, who just attended a Holiday Party at his place of employment. He stayed there for a time, supposedly he argue would a fellow employee and then he left. Got his wife and police say then they returned armed to the hilt with their faces covered. What do you make of it . You know, its interesting. I was looking down because i was looking at my testament before Congress Just a few weeks ago. What i said that active shooters are quite prevalent among extremists. And one of the things that i think is important to recognize is when we look at symbolic violence we oftentimes focus on the ideological first. What i have is a typology which actually is more broad. We have the idelogically motivated and we also have the psychologically dangerous and then someone seeking personal benefit or revenge and you could have one that is primary and others that are secondary. At this point, we simply dont know. But what i told Congress Just weeks ago was we have loners and small cells even. People who will sculpt their own brand of hatred. What i can tell you is these people feel in some way. And they feel there has been an injustice and they act out violently. Unfortunately in the United States, our homicide rate is almost four times that of the uk. More than four times that of germany. And we have thousands of People Killed every year with handguns. Interestingly. People have been killed annually with long rifles of the kind that we see here. The subset. Thats actually declined over the last four, five years by almost 25 . Its just, all right, i hear you. So, ill ask you this question. Syed farook. He is the husband in this case. Employed by the county, made 70,000 a year, born in illinois, just got married and had a 6monthold baby girl. Just hard to fathom that he had some terrible incident in his life and felt the need to do this. Its mind boggling. This is my imitation. The imitation of the Muslim Community to all americans. We have one of the largest mosques in San Bernardino county and well be holding a prayer vigil tonight at 6 00 p. M. And we want all of our fellow americans to join us. The amity has been at the forefront of serving humanity since day one. And what we find is that when these kinds of tragedies happen, the worst thing that we can do is cut ourselves off from one another. We need to find ways to come together, stand united against extremism. And this is our olive branch that we want to maintain that people of all faith or no faith come together and mourn together and break bread together and find ways to maintain this dialogue right now pew Research Reports that nearly 200 million americans have never met a muslim before. There is an ignorance gap that we want to try to fill together by working together, breaking bread together and serving humanity together. I hope we have an overwhelming turnout tonight at our prayer ver vigil. I think that is the step forward to ensure peace, ensure understanding and prevent attacks in the future in any capacity. Qasim, if this couple was inspired by terrorism overseas, how will that affect your community . Well, the amity in the Muslim Community has been very clear on our stance on terrorism. Never an excuse for terrorism, whatsoever. In fact, in the coming days, youre going to see what we call the true islam campaign. A campaign where we will be asking our fellow americans and our fellow Muslim Americans to join us on fundamental principals. The founder of our community, over 120 years ago wrote that the concept of jihad of the sword is dead. No place for violent jihad in islam. The truest is the jihad of the pen of intellectual discourse of dialogue and service to all humanity. So, if it is found by the authorities that these two people acted with some type of terrorism in mind, inspired by some radical group, it will reinforce the need for us to come together. It will reinforce the amity of Muslim Community motto for love of all hatred. Of finding ways to educate one another from each other and, ultimately, with that education, with that service to humanity, truly conquer terrorism. Thats the key to conquering terrorism. So, lets talk about that. Im joined by dan gross. Hes the president of the Brady Campaign to prevent gun violence. Welcome. Thanks, carol. Okay, we seem to have the same argument every time these incidents happen and nothing really changes. I wish i had more time to talk to you, but we only have a couple of minutes. So, give me your best answer, dan. First of all, things are changing. Theres change sweeping across this country. State by state were expanding brady background checks and the last to wake up is almost always congress and a question of the American Public making its voice heard. 93 of the public supports expanding brady background checks. This helps keeps guns out of the hands of all people who shouldnt have them. Domestic abusers and wouldbe terrorists. The American Public supports these solutions keeping guns out of the hands of people intent on doing harm. It seems that the only place where there isnt a significant percentage of support is in congress. And we need to change that. We need to close this disgraceful disconnect that exists between what the American Public wants and what is in our best interest in terms of our safety and what our elected leaders are doing about it. That voice is rising. Just in the last 12 hours plus, weve put more than 4,000 calls into the senate. You can text enough to 877877 and we will direct you directly to the senate. This comes down to the American Public making its voice heard and calling out these politicians who are putting the interests of the corporate gun lobby ahead of the interest of the American Public. Okay, so, give me some pushback to the argument that, you know, had someone had a gun inside that county Office Building that 14 people wouldnt have died. Its nonsense. First of all, these people were heavily, they were wearing armor. That right there dismisses it. My brother was shot in a terrorist attack that was a mass shooting. Anybody on top of the empire state building. Anybody who is close to that situation. Anyone who has been close to the mass confusion associated with one of these tragedies knows that the addition of more untrained people carrying weapons only increases the possibility of somebody dying. The big problem, though, is this is not the conversation that the American Public wants to have. We dont believe that the only answer to violence is more violence. That the only answer to guns is more guns. We believe that this is about keeping guns out of the hands of people who were intent on doing harm and the bottom line is, we can do so much better in doing that. 93 of the American Public. 90 of republicans. 80 of gun owners. 70 of nra members support this solution. This is the conversation that we need to havenot kind of resorting back to this primal notion that our only answer to violence is more violence and our only answer to guns is more guns. All right. Dan gross, thanks for joining me. Thanks to all of you for joining me. Im care costello. Berman and bouduan. The president about to deliver a statement from the oval office. Well bring that to you the second it begins. Authorities in california getting set to hold a News Conference, as well, on the massacre in San Bernardino. Well bring you that live when that takes place. This is what we know right now. Police say at around 11 00 a. M. Local time yesterday the shooter syed farook and his wife, tashefeen malik burst in and opened fire. When it was over, they had killed 14 people and wounded 17 others. The couple then escaped in a dark suv. A few hours later, Law Enforcement spotted them in a car at their house and the chase and killed them both in a fight. The shooters were
