Declaring victory. Take a look though what a debate it was. It may have been the first democratic debate but it was clear it was not Hillary Clintons first rodeo. Running down a debate checklist with surgical precision. I would not ask anyone to vote for me based on my last name. Her name, check. Her appeal to the grassroots and pragmatic wings of the party . Check, check. Im a progressive. But im a progressive who likes to get things done. Her gender . Check, check, check. I think being the first woman president would be quite a change from the president s that have had up until this point. Even apparently joking about an extended trip to the bathroom during commercial. You know it does take me a little longer. Thats all i can say. Right. But what might have been the biggest mustdo addressing the question surrounding the use of her private email for national business, she had a surprising assist from her leading opponent, vermont senator Bernie Sanders. The American People are sick and tired of hearing about your damn emails. Thank you. Me too. Me too. Even earning a smile and a handshake. Clinton didnt exactly return the favor. In one of the sharpest exchanges of the night when asked about sanders record of voting against certain gun control measures. Secretary clinton is Bernie Sanders tough enough on guns. No. Not at all. I think we have to look at the fact that we lose 90 people a day from gun violence. What can i tell secretary clinton, that all the shouting in the world is not going to do what i would hope all of us want, and that is keep guns out of the hands of people who should not have those guns. Sanders, the selfproclaimed democratic socialist touted his battle against income inequality. You dont consider yourself a capitalist though . Do i consider myself part of the casino capitalist process by which so few have so much and so many have so little . By which wall streets greed and recklessness wrecked this economy . No i dont. Former governor Martin Omalley hit hard on foreign policy. Leading us into iraq under false pretenses and telling us as a people that there were weapons of mass destruction there was one of the worst blunders in modern american history. As for former virginia senator jim webb, polling in the Single Digits and barely campai campaigning, he fought to be noticed. Ive been trying to get into to the conversation for ten minute zwls you are over your time. Youve let a lot of people go over their time. And the chafee seemed to struggle over questions over his record. Are you saying you didnt know what you were voting for. Perhaps the most telling maybe aspirational was when Hillary Clinton was anded to list her enemies. In addition to the nra, the Health Insurance companies t drug companies. The iranians. Probably the republicans. You can tell Hillary Clinton thought the debate went well. You can tell the Clinton Campaign thought it went well. But so does the sanders campaign. Manager jeff weaver told me a short time ago that the campaign has raised 1. 3 or did raise 1. 3 million just after the debate. Carol . John burman reporting live for us this morning. Thank you. By far though the defining moment in that debate though, hands down, was this. Let me Say Something that may not be great politics. But i think the secretary is right. And that is that the American People are sick and tired of hearing about your damn emails. Thank you. Me too, me too. You know, the middle class, anderson and let me Say Something about the media as well. I go around the country. Talk to a whole lot of people. Middle class of this count i have collapsing. We have 27 Million People living in poverty. We have massive wealth and income inequality. Our trade policies have cost us millions of decent jobs. The American People want to know whether were going to have a democracy or an oligarch as a result of citizens united. Enough of emails. Lets talk about the real issues facing america. Thank you bernie. Thank you. Progressive blogs insist Bernie Sanders won the debate for Hillary Clinton. As campaign for americas future put it, quote, sanders united the crowd and helped clinton turn the page. Clinton said thanks bernie and shook her rivals hand. And then the democratic crowd went wild. With me now cnn political director and cnn washington political correspondent. Welcome both of you. Hey carol. Hey carol. Just making sure you are still awake. Thanks so much for being with me. What was it like in the room david when that Exchange Went down . Well i wasnt in the room. I was in our production truck carol at the time of the debate. But i will tell you that you could hear that the audience loved that moment of democratic unity. And this is why i think it was a smart play for Bernie Sanders. I know some folks may believe he sort of gave up a political weapon in his arsenal. But Bernie Sanders going after Hillary Clinton on emails is never going to work for him. The democrats were so eager and excited to see him try to help put this controversy behind not just Hillary Clinton but behind the Democratic Party. And that is why i think it was a smart move for him and i think he probably did himself some good. Did that exchange put the email controversy to rest . Because im thinking it probably didnt in the long run. Well carol in the longterm it did not put it to rest as Anderson Cooper pointed out last night. That was a democratic primary audience. It is not a winning issue for Bernie Sanders to go after Hillary Clinton on emails but he did use the moment to actually go after the media and say all of these things that he says were not talking about enough. Income inequality and other things. So i think that was a it was a calculated moment by Bernie Sanders. Anyone who thinks that he was only trying to help out his old Senate Colleague and friend Hillary Clinton is missing it a little bit. His supporters love Bernie Sanders much more than they dislike Hillary Clinton. And in the shortterm she was happy about that moment. But were going to reset all of this next week when she testifies in front of the house of representatives. So david, there were gaffes during the night. Perhaps the biggest for Hillary Clinton was her answer to the Keystone Pipeline question. When asked why she was slow to announce her position on the Keystone Pipeline she said this. You know, we know that if you are learning you are going to change your position. I never took a position on keystone until i took a position on keystone. So david, say what . Listen, i do think you are right. That that was maybe the worst piece of video that will exist for Hillary Clinton from the debate, carol. But i just want to say she obviously had i thought a demanding performance at the debate. She accomplished so many of her goals as john burman pointed out in his piece. But i think she gave a limit gift to the republicans. Making a video about any given issue shes waiting on and using the line of attack that shes waiting for political purposes to put her finger in the wind and then make a decision. That is not a narrative Hillary Clinton wants to feed and i think she gave them a little piece of video but i dont think that moment takes away from how hugely successful the night was for her. And a last question for you jeff. Interestingly most political analysts say Hillary Clinton won the debate. But if you go online, Bernie Sanders won hands down. Why the discrepancy . Well carol there is no question Bernie Sanders has a big group of followers on line. On facebook. Hes been actually a star for many years. Not just since he started running for president here. So if you like Bernie Sanders going into the debate you love Bernie Sanders coming out. He reinforced everything that it is that you liked about him and that you found so strong about him. But i think in the moment, david is definitely right, that Hillary Clinton had a demanding performance on that debate stage. But we always know that that is not all that matters. In the 2007, 2008 president ial campaign, she was often the better debater than obama and he won the election. What she has to do Going Forward is play off this debate. Shes given xanax to the Democratic Party basically. People worried about can she still perform . She can still perform yes. And Bernie Sanders though is still very much in this. Were going to see perhaps he even rise in the National Polls because of this because she was exposed to so many more people here. So the race does not end here. In some ways it is actually just beginning with t the first debate. Interesting. Thanks both of you. Still to come new poll numbers have ben carson on the way up. Get ready for a donald trump smack down. Some cash back cards love to overcomplicate things. Like limiting where you earn bonus cash back. Why put up with that . But the quicksilver card from capital one likes to keep it simple. Real simple. Im talking easy likea walkinthepark, nothingtoworryabout, manthatfeelsgood simple. What will we do with all of these dead mice . Presenting. The rocket to heaven. Tomcat engineered to kill. Half the democrats finished their very first debate. This morning the gop race is getting a lot tighter. In fact ben carson has narrowed the lead down to just one point with support nearly doubling in the last two months. Athena jones joins us with more. Im awaiting trumps reaction as we speak. Well you may not be surprised. Hes already reacted. Good morning carol. But i have to tell you there are a few interesting points in that poll. Ted cruz is now in third place. Hes the only other candidate in double digits, at least in this poll. And Carly Fiorina only at 5 , that shows or suggests she hasnt really been able to capitalize on the post debate momentum after cnns debate in september. So thats interesting. But of course the most interesting of those numbers is that ben carson figure. Only a one percentage point gap there between him and trump. This is at least the second poll that has shown carson really creeping up on donald trump, nipping at hit heels. And as you mentioned he gained a lot. Ins previous poll he was only 12 . The previous fox poll. So he gained 11 points between august and now. And take a listen to how donald trump reacted to these latest numbers and what he says his plan might be now Going Forward. Go ahead and play that. Probably at some point, yes. Which i actually look forward to doing. I cant do it though. Hes been so nice to me, george. I cant do it. Whats the number one issue for you to take him on . I think there are a lot of issues. But one of them would be experience. Ben is a doctor and thats what hes been doing and the question is is he capable of negotiating with china and russia and iran and all of the things you have to do . And there will be a lot of things but i think at this moment im not going to go into them. There will be a lot of things having to to do with capacity and experience. Trump there talking about how hes now going to have to go after his now chief rival ben carson now that hes creeping up on him in the polls. Recent weeks they have really held their fire. Trump even defends carson last week. But now trump is saying look im going to have to attack him and shes signaling very clearly what areas hell try to attack dr. Carson on. So im taking bets when that will exactly bin to happen. You can join in the pool later. And a oneonone interview with ivanka trump. Shes set to go today 4 00 p. M. Eastern, 7 00 p. M. Eastern right here an cnn. Sometimes it is whats not said that speaks volumes. Instead we can talk about affordable college, making College Debt Free and all of the issue, which is why and i see the chair of the dnc, look how glad we are actually to be talking about the issues that matter most to people around their kitchen table. Okay. So omalley may be talking. But Hillary Clinton is the one getting her point across. Classic move, showing not just that clinton agrees with her opponent but shes making them agree with her as well. Lets bring in our body language expert tonya. Welcome back. Thaw thank you for having me. Typically if im talking to whats going to happen. Youre going to nod. It actually gets you more along the lines of believing whether im sayic. Your brain is saying hey yeah thats right. So she does this and it is a technique wellpolished politicians can do to get more people on their side. And direct your attention. Exactly. You want to agree because you are constantly nodded your head with her. And she does it really well. Interesting. So you also notice that mrs. Clinton gave a certain kind of smile during an answer to a benghazi question. Lets watch that moment. You are going to be testifying before Congress Next week about your emails. For the last eight months you havent been able to put this issue behind you. You dismissed it. Joked about it. Called it a mistake. What does that say about your ability to far more challenging crises as president. I ive taken responsibility for it. What i did was allowed by state department but it wasnt the best choice. So shes pretty much smiling in different ways throughout. It is not even just a smile. It is kind of tight mouth. In addition it is the extended eye closure you note there. When shes being ask about this, if you see her blink is slow. She keeps her eyes closed more than just a new beats. We do that to block out the visual stimulus. We dont want to hear it. We dont want to see it. That helps us protect us. We have that and in addition the tight mouthed smile and moving her body back in forth which is like a shift in position to begin with. You can see there was a great deal of discomfort and that tight mouthed smile just gives it away. So fascinating. So you also mentioned Bernie Sanders face right after he shook hands with Hillary Clinton. Enough of the emails. Lets talk about the real issues facing america. Thank you bernie. Thank you. Okay. So what do you see in that exchange. Okay. So first of all did you say that shake . It was a little awkward it was kind of like a chopping. In addition he then smiles. If you watch slowly the smile turns into a slight look of contempt on the one side of his mouth. A slight look. Almost like okay. Did help her . Did i want to help her . What was the goal there . So that was an interesting facial expression. And of course you noted that Hillary Clinton was no nodding through the whole thing. Shes a bobble head. And Lincoln Chafee, he bounces when he answers questions. Lets watch. If you look ahead and you are going to make those poor adjustment calls. Critical time in our history. We just finished with the vietnam era. Getting back into another quagmire. If you are looking ahead at someone who made that poor decision to go into iraq and there was no real evidence of weapons of the mass destruction in iraq i know because i did my homework. Us he on his tiptoes . When we feel powerful we tend to bounce up. Gives us that boost of energy. Were taller, bigger, more in control. Hes more like dancing. So he swerves and moves. And he moves too much. And when he answers his questions hes kind of spinning himself in circles. So even here when he was trying to make a significant point you cant take hirm serious. Interesting. Oh i wish we could bo on for forever. E we saw that with webb as well. As a clear point. When he was talking about his opponent in vietnam, the guy who couldnt be there because he was apparently no longer around. And you saw that pride. And he did a very large bounce when he talked about the enemy. That is what we do to be the alpha. And he had excellent posture throughout. Hes a marine. Excellent posture. Still to come in the newsroom. Black lives matter was on the lips of most of the democrat candidates last night. But did anyone on the stage really connect with minority voters . T, at one point, did not work. You had some blocks and you had major thoroughfares and corridors that were just totally pitch black. Those things had to change. New security measures are now in place across jerusalem, trying to put an end to a wave of deadly violence that shows no signs of letting up. Hundred os of troops sent into the eastern jerusalem today. Days after secretary of state john kerry said he would travel to the region in order to calm the situation. Reporter in the wake of yesterdays deadly violence that killed three israeli civilian, israeli authorities announcing a series of steps they say to calm things down. Some of the steps are controversial, including the easing of israels gun laws, making it easier for some people to purchase guns in self defense. They are also today deploying some 300 Israeli Soldiers to patrol alongside Israeli Police and cities across israel. Very unusual step and then they are setting up check points in areas they say of friction and incitement sefkly in some palestinian neighborhoods in east jerusalem. They say they are also setting up roadblocks blocking some of the streets. In addition Israeli Police today announcing they are not going to be returning the bodies of yesterdays attackers to the families in order to avoid, they say, the funerals from becoming points of incitement. Now israel Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu yesterday saying this is to settle is core saying it is meant to calm things down but palestinian officials acting in outrage saying that the only way to stop the violence is to end israeli oppression of palestinians. Carol . Live from jerusalem this morning. Thank you. And good morning. Im carol costello. Thank you so much for joining me. The first democratic debate is in the bag but with just five candidates on stage it was possible to touch on many issues facing voters today. One of those the black lives Matter Movement. Do black lives matter . Or do all lives matter. Black lives matter. The point that the black lives Matter Movement is making is a very, very legitimate and serious point. Weve got to do more about the lives of these children. As the president of the United States, every life in this country matters. With me now to discuss is star parker, the founder and president for the center for urban renewal and education. Also patty solis doyle. Welcome to both of you. Thank you. Thank you. Thanks for being here. So star was there any startling proclamations last night . Didnt seem like there was much time spent on minority issues, frankly. Well we had five white, wealthy liberals trying to convince us to oneup each other that black lives matter so much to them that they are going to do more of the same. They are government. More policy to trap them in communities. More policies to trap them in failing schools. They are going to ensure policies that planned parenthood continues to track in their off springs potential baby body parts and at the same time make sure that black lives wont be able to defend themselves because they are going to take away what is left of the Second Amendment rights. I dont think they were very convincing that black lives really matter. Democrats have been in control of black community and black lives for the last fifty years and look where we are. Oh patty. Do you want to comment on that . Wow. I think the only thing i dis the only thing i agree on is that they were all white on the stage last night. First of all i think that the black lives Matter Movement made a serious impact on last nights debate. All five candidates said black lives matter. Hillary clinton went into this debate with Real Movement with minorities, with women, with african american, with hispanics. She met with the black lives matter, just before the debate. Had a really good meeting with then. A tough meeting. And as the cnn poll suggests that was just done a couple of days ago in places like South Carolina and nevada where there are large minority populations shes really doing very well. And after the first four states on super tuesday there are lots of states with large minorities and i think this is where hillary is going to do extremely well. Lets go back to the all lives matter thing for just a moment. Star, i want you to address this. The question was posed and i think actually jim webb said all lives matter. But all the rest of the candidates said black lives matter and here is why. But that was easy, wasnt it. There is just not a focus on why the blacks lives matter is significant to where we are in america today. Blacks are crying out for Educational Options but they are in lawsuit against liberals like Hillary Clinton who insists their kids must be trapped in failing schools. Black lives matter because their community have no economic stability because of liberals like Hillary Clinton who insist businesses should be aggressively taxed and kept out of these poor communities. These liberals would rather see business go abroad than to pay the wages that the market will bear. Black lives dont really matter to liberals. It is just the blacks in these states voting for liberals year after year are not given the answers. You could actually argue Hillary Clinton changed her position on the trade agreement and shes no longer for it. Shes changed her position on everything. You said is pretty darn harsh but sally, i would like you to respond to that. Hillary clinton has a long working relationship with African Americans when she worked on the childrens defense fund. And when she was the most passionate last night is when she was talk gd about issues that matter to lower class voters, African Americans and hispanics. These are the things that shes been working on for 40 plus years. So i think its kind of unfair to say that, you know, shes not working for them. All right. I have to leave it there. Palty solis doyle. And star paerk. Thanks both of you. Still o come. A potential biden in disguise. The weird t wacky and the squirm inducing moments of the democratic debate, next. The posn quickly become the only thing you think about. Thats where at t can help. At at t we monitor our Network Traffic so we can see things others cant. Mitigating risks across your business. There were some, shall we say, unusual moments during the democratic debate. Perhaps the most uncomfortable moment came at the expense of Lincoln Chafee. The glasssteagall is my very first vote. I just arrived. My dad had just died. Are you saying you didnt know what you were voting for. I just arrived to senate. I think we get some takeovers. And that was my very first vote. What does that say for you casting a vote for something you were unsure about. I think you are being a little rough. My dad had just died. I had just been appointed to governor. And it was 905 the vote. I guess it didnt matter. With me now larry sabado from the university of virginia and jason johnson, professor of Political Science at hyram university. Am i wrong . I dont think chafee had much of a chance to begin with. And i think anderson did a good job asking direct questions. I dont think Lincoln Chafee did a very good job presenting himself. He kept saying im granite like a rock. Well yeah he was that stiff. But i dont think he presented himself as well as someone who should be on the stage with the other candidateds. Many analysts thought the Carly Fiorina moment would come from jim webb but this stood out for me. When he was asked which enemy are you most proud to have . He respond this way. Id have to say is the enemy soldier that threw the grenade that wounded me. But hes not around right now to talk to. Larry . Well it was awkward. But jim webb is a genuine war hero. He has the metals and citations to prove it. But first of all i know jim webb, i like jim webb. And criticizing either of them at this point is the equivalent of Cyber Bullying and i just wont do it because it is wrong. Okay. Well ill just ask you a pointed question. Will either of them appear in the next democratic debate . Probably not. That is up to the debate sponsors obviously but i would think not. Maybe some would say it is putting them out of their misery but aisle let others make that conclusion. Some people said that, you know, for the first hour of the debate jason johns debate he was kind of sleepy and needed a red bull but after he perked up. I think he perked up. I think his closing statement was amazing. He had the whole room paying attention and was very very passionate. But i think he really missed an opportunity here. He could have been the Carly Fiorina of this debate. He went at Hillary Clinton a little but not far enough. He went at Bernie Sanders a little bit but not far enough. He presented himself as someone who deserves to be on the staining bstage but didnt prevent himself as a viable anything more than the viable vp candidate. We found this one guy who looked like santa claus in the audience. There he is. And he actually had his tee shirt stuffed to make him more santa like. There was a lot of mysterious tweets about this guy. One tweet, nice try joe biden. Does anyone know who this guy is . Im convinced it actually is joe biden. Like he slipped out of d. C. On an airline we didnt know about. He came and just wranted to see the competition. And then kind of shrinked out later. But whenever the data on the stage is kind of boring there was always something there to give us something to talk about t. I pretty much agree with the conventional wisdom at this point. Hillary clinton did very well. Its exactly what she needed. Shes had a very difficult six months. So it was a good solid beginning for her. Makes you wonder why shes resistant to having more debates . Exactly. Maybe that will change. Jason johnson, larry, thanks to both of you. Still to come, is going left the right move for democrats . Were struggling. My schedule is erratic. My hours cut. And so are my benefits. We cant survive on these wages. We need change now. Real change. To improve the lives of millions of workers. To rebuild the middle class. Because our families deserve better. So Hillary Bernie and trump and republicans, you too are you with us . Are you . Israel is trying to grasp how to deal with this violence. It increased security and were getting more information and when we do of course well take you back to jerusalem. In other news this morning, lets talk about that debate. Because democratic socialism stole the show during last nights democratic debate. At least online. Bernie sanders surjd on google, facebook and twitter. Although he kid not surge on Donald Trumps tweet fest. He tweeted, sorry there is no star on the stage tonight. But sanders says his lack of star power actually bypassed trumps socialism is about is saying that it is immoral and wrong that the top onetenth of 1 in this country own almost 90 , almost as much wealth as the bottom 90 . That when you look around the world, you see every other major country providing health care to all people as a right except the United States, and i think we should look to countries like denmark, like sweden and norway and learn from what they have accomplished for their working people. Perhaps sanders words resonate because democrats have grown much more liberal over time. According to pew, 41 of democrats today describe themselves as liberal. Just 15 years ago, 27 described themselves as liberal. Most said they were moderate. With many he now to talk about this, chris and mark. Welcome to both of you. Good to be here. Morning. Nice to have you. Chris, i know sanders needed to prove to voters hes mainstream, but maybe mainstream doesnt win a democratic primary these days. Well, you know, its kind of a balancing act. I think what you saw in the debate last night, you know, and im here in des moines and i did a focus group. You know, it was really interesting. Messagewise, you know, senator sanders clearly tapped a chord. He was clearly winning over the group. I think the challenge, though, for senator sanders is theres still a wall about electability and whether he can win. So as much as i think democrats, you know, are attracted to his message, they still want to win the election. And thats why i think you saw secretary clinton kind of, you know, communicate this pragmatic progressive, someone whos progressive but also can win the election and get things done. It was a very kind of different it is. And im glad you brought that up because we have Hillary Clintons comment. And i want you to comment on that, marc. So lets play how Hillary Clinton described her politics. Im a progressive, but im a progressive who likes to get things done. And i know how to find common ground, and i know how to stand my ground. And, of course, as you know, marc, Bernie Sanders was talking about denmark and Hillary Clinton slammed not slammed denmark, but she said were not denmark, were the United States. Go ahead, marc. Shes playing to peoples insecurities and fears. And people often vote their fears rather than their dreams. Bernie sanders has a vision of the world that resonates with most people. Its a populist vision. Hes not a radical leninist or impose a radical or despotic dictatorship. Hes a democratic socialist, a fancy way of saying hes a real liberal. He wants companies and governments to be accountable and wants everyday working people to be okay. The problem is because hes used that label democratic socialist, Hillary Clinton knows she can play to the cheap seats and peoples insecurities and say hey, wait a minute. Bernie wants to make us another country, something other than what america is. Thats the problem here. Americans want working people to have a chance. Americans do think its unfair that ceos make so much more, sometimes thousands and tens of thousands more than their workers. But for some reason, that word socialism is a trigger for people, and hillary is wisely playing on it from a political perspective. For some reason, chris . I can think of many reasons. Like what . I think senator sanders did a pretty good job of kind of beating that back. I think the one i think the one fundamental tweak i would have made based on what i saw would have had more of an impact is, you know, republicans have used this label of socialist against democrats for decades. Fdr, jfk, lyndon johnson, bill clinton, every democrat who addresses the needs and works of working and middleclass families is labeled with that. This is not about, i think, labels whether youre a socialist or not. This is about whether youre going to solve problems that are endemic and frustrating to the country. And i can tell you especially in the Democratic Party, there are working and middleclass families that are incredibly frustrated with what they see as an enduring set of issues and problems that dont get better. So i think the reason why the message does well is because of that. Right. Thats my point. No, and just to address your point, marc, and i understand where youre coming from, but i do believe americans embrace capitalism, and many of them think thats what defines our country, and theyre really not interested in becoming a socialist country. So in that sense right, but uhhuh . But just to be clear, Bernie Sanders isnt suggesting that we dismantle american capitalism and become a socialist country. I think part of the problem is that American Voters often arent fully educated on what democratic socialism is. This is not hes not trying to become cuba or other nations. And im not saying those nations are bad. Im just saying thats not what sanders is suggesting. Thats why the term democratic socialism is vastly different than other forms of socialism. Ive got to leave it there. Thanks to both of you. I appreciate it. Lets go back to israel. Erin mclaughlin is there. Theres been a foiled stabbing attempt at the damascus gat pe z plaza. Tell us more. Reporter thats right, carol, were just getting this information from Israeli Police. They say they saw a young man sitting next to the damascus gate entrance. They said he was wearing combat fatigues. They said he seemed nervous. And so they approached him. Everyone here is on edge. They said that he pulled out a knife after they approached him and tried to attack them. Police fired at the stabber. And then the attacker then turned and tried to attack another group of police. They alerted to the situation, having heard the initial police screaming out. They responded by firing at this attacker, alleged attacker, shooting him and killing him. It is the fourth stabbing near the damascus gate entrance in the past week. People here on edge. The wave of violence currently gripping this area continues. Carol . Erin mclaughlin reporting live for us. The next hour of cnn newsroom after a break. Biden we had a pretty good idea what all those families, all you americans in trouble, were going through. In part because our own families had gone through similar struggles. We are starting with breaking news this morning. Its a developing story out of jerusalem. Thats where there has been a failed attempt to stab a private bodyguard at the damascus gate plaza. Officials say the attacker has been neutralized. All of this as new security measures are put into place across jerusalem. The israeli army is saying it will send in hundreds of troops to east jerusalem, backing up Police Forces as surging violence across the region shows no signs of letting up. Cnns ben wedeman is on the phone. Hes on the scene. Tell us more, ben. Reporter yeah, what i can tell you is just moments ago, Israeli Police and medical personnel carried away the body of this attacker who was shot at the damascus gate about half an hour ago after he tried to stab a private Security Guard who was accompanying a family into the old city. So the bodys been taken away. Theres still a very heavy security presence in this area. Theyve also brought in riot police on horseback as well to try to keep the situation under control. Significant, this is, today until now has been quiet. One of the first quiet days in quite some time here in jerusalem. But this quiet shattered by this attack just outside the front gate of the damascus gate of the old city where there was already a significant security presence. Tell us whats contained in the old city, ben. Reporter im sorry, can you repeat the question, please . Whats in the old city . Thats a place where most tourists go, correct . Reporter yes, the old city is where you have the wailing wall or western wall holy to the jews. You have the aqsa mosque. This is an area that is high ly emotive for christians, muslims and jews. And where there is always always tension. Tension is high here, but particularly high at the moment. All right. Ben wedeman, stand by. I know youre searching for more information as you talk on the phone with me, too. Mickey rosenfeld, the Israeli PoliceForeign Press spokesperson, good morning. Thank you so much for being with me. Thank you. Can you tell me about this wouldbe attacker . Is he dead . Well, i can confirm what took place is that the terrorist who attempted to stab a private Security Guard was spotted at the scene by Police Officers that were in the area. Theyve been in and around the old walls of the old city and damascus gate specifically all day. And they responded by identifying the terrorist with a knife in his hand. He was shot and killed at the scene, confirmed dead at the scene. Tightened security is continuing across jerusalem in different areas. After yesterday evenings cabinet meeting, deciding to heighten security even further, including a further 300 soldiers that are working under the command of the Israeli National police in order to boost up security once again and try and prevent and respond to any further terrorist attacks, as we did this afternoon. A private Security Guard, who was this private Security Guard, and was that guard escorting tourists . First of all, theres hundreds of tourists on a regular day in jerusalem in and around different areas. Earlier in the day i was at damascus gate, and it was relatively calm and quiet. The Security Guards escort jewish people walking through in and around the different areas of the old city, being very tense at this moment in time after the wave of attacks that have taken place. Police officers located literally every 20 to 30 meters in the small area of the old city in order to prevent attacks from taking place. Do you plan any added security because of this latest attack . Im speaking to you now from the entrance of the neighborhood which is the area where the terrorist who unfortunately killed three israelis yesterday, they left the neighborhood. At the moment, some roadblocks have been set up at the entrance of the neighborhood in order to make sure that we have more control of the movement of people coming in and out of the neighborhood. But that is being implemented only to try and find those specific lone wolf terrorists that are carrying out those attacks. Theres no orders that are given. Instead of coming into the jerusalem and the different areas, they decide that theyre going to carry out a sporadic attack. Those are the terrorists we have to try to find and respond with the Israeli Police units on the ground. Right now its quick and swift. Is there any move to close some of these holy sites in the old city . No, absolutely not. The old city was open today to hundreds of tourists. And the temple mount was open for muslims to come and pray on. There were no age limits whatsoever. But at the same time, due to the tension that there is and due to the fact that over the last ten days since the 3rd of october, unfortunately seven israelis have been killed, and more than 60 injured its necessary for security measures to continue as long as necessary. Theyre carrying out security assessments on a daytoday basis. Mickey rosenfeld, the chief inspector in jerusalem, thank you so much for joining me. We have ben wedeman back on the phone with new information for us. Ben, what can you tell us . Reporter what i can tell you now is that the situation has calmed down a bit. Theres still a lot of security personnel here, as you can see. But theres also some, it appears this is in an area where many palestinians live. So palestinians have come to go come see whats going on. Oftentimes after these events, when they take place particularly in this part of town, there can be running clashes between the Israeli Security forces, the police and local residents. But it appears theres a police tape has been put across in front of the damascus gate. So obviously people are not passing through at the moment. But as i was saying before, this is the first attack of the day. And people here, they start the day every day hoping that it will be a quiet one. And until this happened, its about 5 00 in the afternoon here, it looked like perhaps the city would be spared yet another attack. But it appears that thats not the case. Carol . Let me ask you about the tourists there because there are hundreds of tourists from all over the world. So there was this private bodyguard. And the private bodyguard was escorting tourists to these holy sites . Reporter well, probably because this these tourists, this family had a private Security Guard with them, its very likely that they were jewish. There arent a lot of tourists here at the moment at all, really. I think a lot of people, for perhaps good reason, are staying away. But oftentimes it is jewish tourists or israelis themselves, even resident of the old city, when they move around the old city, oftentimes they are accompanied by Security Guards. So im making a presumption here, but i think its fairly likely they were a jewish family. All right. Ben wedeman reporting live from jerusalem this morning. Elise labott is in washington, d. C. I know secretary of state john kerry is either in israel or on his way. Tell us about that. Reporter well, carol, a lot of diplomatic activity over the last several days. I understand from officials that secretary kerry is trying to get together a meeting with separately but meet in the same location with israeli Prime Minister netanyahu and israeli and palestinian president abbas. Not clear where that could be. It could be in jordan. It could be somewhere else. But clearly the u. S. Very concerned about the escalating violence, and particularly the statements now, carol, coming out from leaders is very important. The u. S. Really looking for Prime Minister netanyahu and president abbas to tone down the incitement, to instruct everybody to remain calm. Really havent seen that from either leader according to u. S. Officials, and thats what secretary kerry has been talking about. He was talking through the weekend with both leaders and will continue to do so. You know, carol, since the u. S. Failed peace efforts last year, theres been a real kind of lull in diplomatic activity. You know, the relationship between israel and the United States also sour since this iran deal. So in the recent months, secretary kerry has been wanting to, in fact, reinvigorate the peace process. In fact, quartet envoys, envoys from the International Community including the u. S. Were supposed to be in israel today to meet with israeli and palestinian officials about any way they could really start to jump start this longstalled peace process. Obviously, they are far away from that, carol. Obviously. Elless labott reporting live for us from washington, thank you. Ill be right back. At ally bank no branches equals great rates. Its a fact. La quinta inns suites take care of you, so you can take care of business. Book your next stay at lq. Com la quinta all right. I want to update you now on whats happening in jerusalem. In israel this morning, there was an attack or a wouldbe attack right at the damascus gate leading into the old city where a lot of holy shrines are located, a lot of tourists in that area. A private bodyguard was escorting a group of tourists inside. There was security at damascus gate. Supposedly according to authorities in jerusalem, a man with a knife approached, and Israeli Security shot and killed the suspect. His body now carried away. We understand now, though, that tourists are streaming out of the old city. So lets head there live and check in with ben wedeman. Ben, bring us up to date. Reporter yeah, carol, this attack took place just over an hour ago. And its the first attack of the day after yesterday when there were five attacks in jerusalem and other parts of israel. Now, we understand that the young man, the attacker, the wouldbe attacker, apparently was wearing some sort of military style tshirt which may have been why police who were in this area werent immediately alerted to his possible intentions. Im just going to step out of the way so you can get a better scene. And when he actually did try to stab this private Security Guard, he came under fire because there are already there were already lots of police, lots of military here. And apparently he took well over a dozen rounds and died on the spot. I watched as they were bagging up his body in a black plastic bag. And they carried it up the steps on my right. Now it appears normal passage has been resumed. People were being kept back while the scene was being cleared up. Its not just tourists because theres not really many tourists these days in jerusalem, for obvious reasons. But there are lots of people, several hundred thousand people, actually live within the walls of the old city. So thats what youre seeing now. Mostly residents of the old city or people who have come here to go shopping. But now, as is often the case in israel, youll have an attack, and within a few hours, and here just over an hour, the scene has been cleaned and cleared. And i dont want to say life is getting back to normal, but life goes on. Carol . Life goes on. And tell us again because there are many important holy sites located within the old city. Thats of great concern to people around the world. Reporter yes. The holy city contains the temple mount where the aqsa mosque is located, the third holiest place for muslims. The western or wailing wall. The holiest site for jews. And the church of the holy sepulcher. These circumstances are far from normal, normally you would have thousands of tourists coming here, mixing with the residents of the old city. The old city is divided into four quarters, the christian, the muslim, the armenian and the jewish. And so this is sort of where all the people of this land come together live in close proximity which also explains why you have had, over the last 12 days or so, so many attacks and incide t incidents within the old city itself or just on the outside, as is the case here, just outside damascus gate. Carol . All right. Ben wedeman reporting live from jerusalem on the phone with me right now is aaron david miller, a middle east expert. Welcome, aaron. Carol, a pleasure to be here, even under these terrible circumstances. Its just its pretty unbelievable. Things have been quiet in jerusalem over the past several days. And now this. Well, you know, ive watched, participated, helped to broker Israeli Palestinian agreements over the course of 25 years. And im afraid that this is part and parcel of the natural but yet tragic ebb and flow of violence and confrontation that has characterized this conflict for a half a century or more. This kind of violence, highly personalized, knives instead of guns driven by social media, isis and the notion of using knives, i think, figures prominently in this is very difficult to control. This is not a first intefadeh which has sustained massive uprising. Its not a second intefadeh in which palestinian groups organized. You had israels reoccupation of the entire west bank. This is much more highly personalized and difficult to control. And i think its either going to play itself out, which it usually does, or alternatively, it could escalate. And i think the good news is that neither the palestinian president , mahmud abbas nor Benjamin Netanyahu, cooperation is still ongoing, the real question is, though, what can each leader do to try to calm the situation and at least get beyond this cycle. But at the end of the day, im not a solutionist, but the reality is because i think the chances are pretty slim for a twostate solution this is going to play on until the underlying grievances and causes and needs of both sides are met. Yeah. And im watching Israeli Security there patting down people before they enter the damascus gate into the old city. Secretary of state john kerry is on his way. What can he do . You know, i dont think a decision has yet been made, ive been following cnn reporting on this. The secretary, i think, said last night that he was considering going and might soon go to the region. Look, i worked for half a dozen of his predecessors. One thing i know is that timing is everything. If he goes prematurely and cannot stop this, which is going to be extremely difficult for a third party to do, were simply going to be perceived to have failed yet again. I think timing is everything. You know, woody allen said 90 of life is just showing up. Its really showing up at the right time. And before kerry launches, i think he has to have a much greater sense that both abbas and netanyahu are prepared to actually do things that might bring this latest phase to an end because if he doesnt, if he goes and he leaves and the violence and the he saescalateo cycle continues, were going to be perceived to be the emperor wearing no clothes. When it comes to the issue, the notion that you should try and fail and thats better than not having tried at all, thats okay for a College Football team. Its not okay if youre the secretary of state of the most consequential nation on earth. Netanyahu and abbas need to be able to tell the secretary that they are in a position to actually take concrete steps. And what those steps would be right now are very uncertain to get a handle on this before the secretary of state just throws himself into this without much prospect of success. All right. Just a quick update whats happening in israel ciright now. Israeli police shot and killed a young man who lunged at them with a knife. You can see it happened right here at the damascus gate. Thats one of the entrances to the old city. Violence has been a problem in the old city for the last several weeks. Israeli security have been trying to get a handle on it. They have not been able to. Theyre now searching everybody who enters the old city right now for weapons and such. The american secretary of state, john kerry, is said to be on his way at some time to help quell the violence. Of course, well keep you posted. In other news this morning, American Voters who tuned in to see a fight saw a debate instead. In their first showdown, the Democratic Candidates played nice, at least compared to the bareknuckled brawls of their republican counterparts. Hillary clinton stayed on message. Bernie sanders found a wider audience. And the three underdogs elbowed into the spotlight if only for a moment. But the big moment, the defining moment, was this. Let me Say Something that may not be great politics. But i think the secretary is right. And that is that the American People are sick and tired of hearing about your damn emails. Thank you. Me, too me, too you know . The middle class, anderson and let me Say Something about the media as well. I go around the country, talk to a whole lot of people, middle class of this country is collapsing. We have 27 Million People living in poverty. We have massive wealth and income inequality. Our trade policies have cost us millions of decent jobs. The American People want to know whether were going to have a democracy or an oligarchy as a result of citizens united. Enough of the emails. Lets talk about the real issues facing america. Thank you, bernie thank you. With me now to talk about this, cnn political director david challion. What was it like in the room . I know you werent there but you were watching nearby. What was it like in the room when that Exchange Went down . Well, you could hear it right there, carol, in what you just played. That roomful of democrats loved that moment. Bernie sanders accomplished three things that was all very good for him in that moment. One, he endeared himself to democrats by not going after Hillary Clinton on the emails, by embracing her on it. That was very good for him. It made him a much more likeable figure to the room. Thats first of all. Second of all, he poked at the media. Thats always a good thing for a politician to do when they take us on. That works well for them. And three, he pivoted to his core message on the email answer. He said what we need to be talking about is the economic fairness argument that hes been out there making on the campaign trail. To accomplish those three things in that one answer, even though it ended up being obviously a wonderful moment for Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders did himself a lot of good in that moment. All right. David chalian, thank you. A quick scan of this mornings headlines suggest hands down Hillary Clinton won last nights democratic debate. The New York Times called clinton a savvy seamstress who perfectly threaded the needle. Even conservative columnists calling clinton confident and aggressive. But that narrative did not play out online where it was Bernie Sanders, not clinton, who dominated the dialogue. Searches for sanders spiked on google throughout the debate, even outperforming donald trump. And sanders topped twitter, too, gaining 35,000 new followers. And heres what voters told cnns randi kaye. Reporter how many of you think that Bernie Sanders won this debate tonight . Almost all of you. How about how many of you think Hillary Clinton won this debate tonight . Are we getting closer to being decided . No. Okay. Maybe a couple of you are. You have a vision of your dream ticket, dont you . Tell me what that is. Absolutely. My dream team thousand will be Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders together. They just really did a really great job. Hillary is very president ial, and bernie is definitely a man of the people. I think he represents more regular people than what these politicians on stage are just out there. Interesting, right . With me now to talk about this, hilary rosen, cnn political commentator, and ben labolt, press secretary for the 2012 obama president ial campaign. Welcome to both of you. So ben, could that possibly work, a Clinton Sanders ticket . I dont anticipate seeing that, but look. You cant deny the intensity of the support among some democratic activists for senator sanders message about the middle class being hollowed out over decades. But at the end of the day, i dont think he accomplished a broader appeal last night. I mean, he opened with a lecture on why we should import democratic socialism into the United States. Secretary clinton was in command of the issues. She herself an advocate for making the economy work better for the middle class. Were always nervous during the 2008 campaign about going up against thensenator clinton in a debate. And i think last night she proved why. Shes still got it. But hilary, this democratic socialist thing seems to be resonating online, at least. Bernie sanders surged, and he raised, like, 1. 3 million during the debate. You know, Hillary Clinton had the best night of her Campaign Last night. But she woke up this morning being the first one to recognize that this is still several months to go. She does not, you know, cannot take this for granted. Bernie sanders has energized democratic activists. We saw last night that while the media and a significant number of voters and hundred dits all declared her the sure winner. Bernie sanders actually won on social media, according to reports. You know, Bernie Sanders has a base that Hillary Clinton needs to continue to win over. Its a big part of the socalled Obama Coalition. Bens pretty familiar with that. That won the general election. You know, Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton are still going to be fighting over that population. Lets talk about that Obama Coalition, ben. Because online, you know, people tend to be younger, right . And something about Bernie Sanders is really resonating. Plus the Democratic Party has grown much more liberal over the years. Well, i think sometimes candidates who say the most provocative things in debates tend to have the biggest impact on social media. You know, one challenge for sanders in building out the Obama Coalition is more diverse support. You know, right now were seeing that latinos and africanamericans tend to be supporting the Clinton Campaign. Sanders has strong numbers in the first couple of states on the map, iowa and new hampshire, but as those states get more diverse, hes going to need to show that he can reach broader constituencies. Sanders has one leg at the stool. Its a threelegged stool. Theres young people. Theres minorities, and theres women. You know, hillary still has twothirds of that stool. All right. I have to leave it there. Hilary rosen, ben labolt, thanks. Thanks, carol. Youre welcome. Still to come in the newsroom, the candidates address the question do black lives matter . Did they say enough is this . Listerine® total care strengthens teeth, after brushing, helps prevent cavities and restores tooth enamel. So, lets try this again. Whats in your wallet . I want to take you back to israel to the old city, jerusalem, where a wouldbe attacker was shot and killed by Israeli Security. Ben wedeman is on the site. So lets go there live. What new information do you have, ben . Reporter well, what we understand is that this attack, when it took place, it was by a young man wearing what appeared to be green camouflage military style clothing, a tshirt and pants, who attacked or tried to attack with a knife. A private Security Guard who was escorting a family that was a family of tourists that was going inside the city. Now, the Israeli Police has posted a picture of that knife on its website. For you, im just going to now step out of the way so you get a better idea of the scene at the moment. Rather strange here. Just a little while ago, we were watching as a group of Young Palestinian men, probably residents of this area, stood around the blood stain on the ground and prayed for the soul of the attacker who, of course, is now dead. We understand he was shot well over a dozen times by the many policemen who were here. We were also watching as Israeli Police and Border Guards were checking the i. D. S and searching palestinians who, for one reason or another, they had reasons to have suspicions. So its still a fairly tense scene because this is an area which is predominantly palestinian arab. And so theres a lot of people standing around looking, and there is a lot of Israeli Security, of course. So this was the first attack of the day. And i have to stress, carol, that when you wake up in the morning, you hope that its going to be a quiet day. And it looked like that was going to be the case. But obviously, this incident has marred that quiet. And once again, raised a level of alarm up to its highest level yet again. The hope is that things are going to calm down, but they just dont seem to. Carol . Ben wedeman reporting live from jerusalem this morning. On to american politics now. Democrats went after the africanamerican vote last night with nearly every candidate declaring that yes, black lives matter. Do black lives matter, or do all lives matter . Black lives matter. The point that the black lives Matter Movement is making is a very, very legitimate and serious point. Weve got to do more about the lives of these children. As president of the United States, every life in this country matters. So was it a good starting point or not nearly enough . To talk about this, im joined by civil rights activist with black lives Matter Movement. Welcome back. Thank you. Its good to be here. Nice to have you here. It is important that go ahead. Go ahead. No, it was important that the conversation about race sort of started, but it was so short. You know, its just one question. I do think clinton has to be more forward in talking about race. Shes the only candidate of the major candidates on the stage who didnt directly talk about race in her response, though she did talk about the task force and 21st Century Policing and body cameras. We were hoping to hear more from her and from all the candidates in terms of policy solutions. What policy do you want to hear from these candidates . I know that you met with Hillary Clinton not so long ago. What did you tell her that your community needed . Yeah, so we talked about a host of things from the new new deal which is what she talked about, trying to make sure that that focuses on blackness, also demilitarizing the police, and things as farreaching like the end of private prisons and just a new way of thinking about criminal justice reform. Is she willing to undo the crime bill that her husband put into place with the same force . Is she willing to apply that pressure . And with sanders, you know, we talked a lot about income versus wealth. He talked about the racial wealth gap last night. And hes also come out against civil asset forfeiture. He has a strong platform. Were still waiting for Hillary Clinton to release her criminal justice or Racial Justice platform. And youre right, minority issues werent talked about much last night. I think there was five minutes spent on black lives matter and five minutes on immigration. Why do you think that was . Its really odd considering these conversations have been in the National Stage for at least the past sort of 17, 18 months. Its really also disappointing. So im hopeful that well have another space where we can hear the capped dates talk more candidly and openly about these issues. I dont know what cnn chose to do last night with the debate, but it is disappointing that again, it was such a small and sort of not policyoriented question at all that the candidates answered about black lives. Well, the candidates were welcome to bring such matters up themselves, but they only concentrated on that short time as well. So do you think that some of those candidates might be taking the africanamerican vote for granted . You know, if they are, that will be to their peril. They all know and we stressed this in the meetings that they will not win without the black vote. I think people, if we dont start hearing direct language about black lives, i think that people will just stay home, and they know that they cant win if thats going to be the strategy. So im hopeful that sanders will release a stage two of his platform that is a little more robust and that we will see any platform around justice from clinton. And omalleys platform is strong. I think he still has not artfully explained why this platform is so progressive in his time as mayor does not seem to have been progressive around issues of criminal justice. I have to leave it there. Deray mckesson, thank you for joining me. Still to come, Hillary Clinton takes on benghazi questions last night, but was her answer good enough or just confusing . The role shes accused of playing by republicans in the death of ambassador Chris Stevens and three other americans didnt exactly resonate. Unless you believe the United States should not send diplomats to any place that is dangerous, which i do not, then when we send them forth, there is always the potential for danger and risk. Some say clinton maybe better have a better answer because her next stop is benghazi. Clinton will appear before a committee filled with angry republicans. With me, former michigan governor jennifer granholm, now Senior Adviser for correct the record, a group backing clintons candidacy. And in washington, democratic strategist peter fenn. Welcome to both of you. Thanks, carol. Thanks for being here. Jennifer, do you think that clintons answers on benghazi were effective . I do. I do. And shell have more of an opportunity to go into great depth, im sure. I think the first answer that she gave last night, which really pivoted from this email question to the select committee which was established and has spent 4. 5 million of your taxpayer money on a partisan effort which now, of course, Kevin Mccarthy has made very clear, i thought that was really important to highlight. She will be going before the committee. She will be answering all of their questions. Shes the one who has asked to testify. Shes the one who has insisted that it be public. She will answer all of the questions. But after the seventh committee finished looking at this and did not find her personally responsible, which is a ridiculous notion that she would recruit the ambassador and be responsible for his death. But she will address all of that. But last night i think her answer was on the money. And by the way, i think her performance was outstanding. She was a commander. Well, peter, i think Many Americans are confused by what exactly a secretary of states role is in a situation like benghazi. Well, i think theres probably no question about that. But i think that what weve now discovered as the governor points out and i wrote about it last week in a column called the benghazi backfire is that the republicans have turned a look into how do you make our embassies more secure and how do you protect people into a hit job on Hillary Rodham clinton. Now, that, to me, is pretty stupid. I mean, thats not smart for the republicans to do. And i think on the 22nd when she appears before that committee, they are going to have something to answer for. And ill tell you, if i were those committee folks, id say lets have her in and out of her in an hour because i dont think we want to be taking the incoming from Hillary Clinton on this. I dont think thats going to happen, peter. Sorry . Im thinking that will not happen. I dont think so. I think youre right. I think that republicans who have often railed against waste fraud and abuse are guilty of waste, fraud and abuse in this committee, having spent all this money and now this committee has gone on longer than the investigation of pearl harbor and watergate. I think peter is absolutely right. One hour in and out and they will be lucky to get out of there with their dignity intact. Lets talk about trustworthiness because thats been a problem for Hillary Clinton. There was a Certain Exchange that id like our viewers to listen to about clintons email clintons email controversy and trustworthiness. Lets listen. I know that plays well in this room, but ive got to be honest. Governor chaffee, for the record, on the campaign trail, youve said a different thing. You said this is a huge issue, standing here in front of secretary clinton, are you willing to say that to her face . Absolutely. We didnt have the best part when she said simply no. But a lot of people said that was very effective. Peter, what do you think . Well, you know, i think whats happened here and ive talked to some really smart republicans who i consider reasonable republicans, and they said, look. Youre making a big mistake going after Hillary Clinton on personal issues. Youve always done this with the clintons. Youve always thought you had a Silver Bullet in some personal thing and youre going to hang your hat on this. This campaign is going to be about issues. What people want to talk about is what was talked about at that debate. And Bernie Sanders was right, you know . Enough with the damn emails. And i think its going to take her a while to work through all this, and shes going to be answering more questions about it. But end of the day, carol, i think that this will not be a governing issue into next spring and fall and november. Maybe for hardcore democrats, but i dont know. Ive got to end it there. Peter pen, jennifer granholm, thanks so much. Ill be right back. dog mmmmm. Beneful, look at that, meaty chunks, carrots. I dont know what kind of slicer or dicer you got back there. But im a big fan. vo beneful chopped blends, a healthy blend. Your dog will love. Made with real beef. Plus carrots and barley that you can see. Biden we had a pretty good idea what all those families, all you americans in trouble, were going through. In part because our own families had gone through similar struggles. When i was a young kid in third grade, i remember my dad coming up the stairs in my grandpops house where we were living, sitting at the end of my bed, and saying, joey, im going to have to leave for a while. Go down to wilmington, delaware, with uncle frank. Theyre good jobs down there, honey. And in a little while. A little while, ill be able to send for you and mom and jimmy and val, and everythings going to be fine. For the rest of our life, my sister and my brothers, for the rest of our life, my dad never failed to remind us that a job is about a lot more than a paycheck. Its about its about your dignity. [ applause ] its about respect. Its about your place in the community. Its about being able to look your child in the eye and say, honey, its going to be okay, and mean it, and know its true. The candidates took on pocketbook issues last night. Lets head to Christine Romans on what you need to know. This is just the beginning, frankly. Income inequality is the oxygen that is going to drive a lot of the debate. Lets talk about what theyre talking about. Inequality, wages are stagnant while corporate profits are a bigger part of the economy. And they say almost everybody on that stage say the first thing to do is raise minimum wage. They also talk about wall street regulations. Bernie sanders saying break up the big banks right thousand. Theyre bigger today than they were when we bailed them out. Hillary clinton wants to prosecute bad bankers, tax highfrequency traders but not as many as sanders. She wants to keep the dodd frank regulations but give them more teeth. Heres something really interesting. I think youll be hearing more about this, carol. That chart should make every parent in this country cry. That is tuition since 1978. Up 1200 . Bernie sanders has an interesting proposal. He would like to tax wall street, a wall street tax where he says because the American People bailed out the banks, its now time for the banks to turn around and bail out the middle class, pay for college, Fouryear College for anybody who qualifies in this country, paid for by the banks. Im thinking thats not going to happen. Im thinking its not, but it shows you where he is, very populist part of the party there. But it does really it just is a reminder that the middle class wants something. Income inequality is not sustainable to democrats, these will be their talking point says the next year.
