Doing things. It wasnt people from sweden that blew up the world trade centers. Also, the man accused of killing baby bella allegedly thought she was possessed. Hes in court this morning, along with bellas mother. Well take you there, live. Plus, emmy night gets political. Racism is over. Dont fact check that. Racism, sexism and the race for 2016. Nothing was off limited for host Andy Sandberg. Lets talk live in the cnn newsroom. Good morning. Im carol kcostello. Any minute now, a step toward justice for baby doe. Her name we now know is bella. Her mother and her mothers boyfriend are set to appear in a courtroom. The boyfriend charged with murder. Cnn sources say he punched the little girl because he thought she was possessed. Bellas mother is charged with being an accessory to murder after the fact. We are live inside the courtroom. Well bring you developments as they happen. For now, we turn to politics. In just a couple of hours, the nations most powerful Muslim Rights Group will formally demand that Republican Ben Carson abandon his president ial bid. The council on americanislamic relations care is outraged by carsons lightning rod comments that he would not even consider electing a muslim to the white house. Well talk about that in a few minutes. First to cnns athena jones, live in washington for us. Good morning. Good morning, carol. Those comments from carson, and also comments trump made, have argued a lot of people. Carsons clarification of his comments havent helped. The question is whether this will hurt him or trump in the polls. I would not advocate that we put a muslim in charge of this nation. Reporter this shocking statement by dr. Ben carson under a spotlight this morning in the republican president ial race. On meet the press sunday, carson said a muslim president should not be in the oval office, and that a president s faith should matter to voters. If its inconsistent with the values and principles of america, then of course it should matter. Reporter later, when donald trump was asked about the possibility of a muslim president , he said some people said it already happened. Reporter a reference to president barack obama. Trump later adding he said he is a christian. Im willing to take him at his word for that. Reporter carson is doubling down on his controversial comments. In an interview he said, quote, muslims feel their religion is very much a part of your public life, and that is inconsistent with our principles and our constitution. Democrats were quick to pounce. You judge candidates for president not on their religion, not on the color of their skin, but on their ideas, on what they stand for. Reporter this as the latest cnn orc poll shows trump and carson losing momentum with voters after the cnn debate. Trump still is front runner but his lead is slipping, as Carly Fiorina rises 12 percentage points. How muany of you saw the debate on wednesday night . Reporter over half of poll respondents who watched cnns debate think fiorina did the best job. Marco rubio taking home second place, far better than his former mentor, jeb bush. I think carly had a good night but i think you gave her a lot of easy questions. Reporter trump zeroing in on the postdebate star, attacking fiorinas record as ceo once again sunday, tweeting she did such a horrible job at hp, that she never got another ceo job offer. The political front runner saying Carly Fiorina cannot become the republican nominee. When it comes to the comments by carson and trump, a muslim member is saying americans should be disturbed that the candidates are tolerating religious bigotry. Athena jones reporting live from washington, thank you. Ben carson also telling the hill whoever wins the presidency should be sworn in on a stack of bibles, not a koran. Talking about a muslim president , he says, is irrelevant, because none of the candidates is muslim. Carsons Business Manager defended his controversial remarks. This is why hes not a politician. This is why hes not trying to be politically correct. This is america. Its a place of freedom of speech. And freedom of religion. You express how you believe and feel. This is not an issue of religion to dr. Carson. This is an issue of ones belief system. Everything is not about winning the white house for him. Its about standing up for what we believes in, telling the truth, even if it makes some uncomfortable. Its what we believes. For donald trump, he says he loves muslims but told cnns jake tapper it wasnt people from sweden who attacked the United States on 9 11. We could be politically correct if you want, but certainly, are you saying we dont have a problem . I think everybody would agree. I have friends that are muslims, theyre great, amazing people. Most muslims, like most everything, i mean, these are fabulous people, but we certainly do have a problem. I mean, you have a problem throughout the world. Whats the problem . You have radicals that are doing things. I mean, it wasnt people from sweden that blew up the world trade center, jake. Trump and carsons comments now sparking outrage. Today, the council on americanislamic relations is calling for ben carson to withdraw because his remarks violate the constitution, mainly article 6, which says, it forbids a religious test as a requirement for holding a governmental position. Im joined by the National Communications director of care. Thanks for joining me. Thanks for having me. What would you like to say to ben carson . Well, its interesting that an individual who is trashing the constitution is accusing american muslims of not somehow following the constitution. American muslims support the constitution every day and seek its protections from individuals like from carson who would violate the constitution to take away our rights. I mean, donald trump says it wasnt sweeds who did this. Well, it wasnt sweeds who went into the church and killed nine africanamericans. It wasnt a swede who blew up the federal building. It wasnt a swede who went into Newtown School and killed all the people, or the theater in colorado and killed the people. You can make all of these bizarre comparecomparisons, but doesnt avoid the fact that mr. Carson is rejecting the constitution when he says, put a religious test for public office. Then accuses muslims of not following the constitution. It would be laughable if it wasnt so tragic. Abraham, what spaewhat will couple hours . If an individual doesnt abide by or care about the constitution, i think thats a disqualifier in terms of running for the nations highest elected office. Were calling for him to withdraw from the race. Youre calling for ben carson to withdraw. What about donald trump . Donald trump, i mean, its in the same category, but with donald trump, its just run of the mill bigotry. With mr. Carson, its actual rejection of the clear language of the constitution. You satisfied that other politicians have disavowed what ben carson said . Weve seen some disavows, and we appreciate that, especially from ted cruz and Lindsey Graham and others, but we really need a strong response to this. It really is beyond the pail, and it should be reputuated by politicians from either side of the political spectrum. From right to left, they need to speak out against this because its getting out of hand. The rising islam phobia in our society. We saw within the last few days, the 14yearold muslim arrested for bringing a clock to class in the dallas area. I mean, were seeing this rising hostility. When theres no pushback from our nations religious and political leaders, thats taken as acceptance by these bigots out there. Thank you so much for joining me this morning. I appreciate it. Thank you. Turning now to the democrats. Bernie sanders pumped up a crowd of 3,000 people last night at the university of New Hampshire. Whats interesting, the Washington Post says the crowd was five times the size of what Hillary Clinton drew on the same campus two days earlier. While sanders is gaining ground in the early election state, new polls show Hillary Clinton is gaining momentum nationwide. G Hillary Clintons summertime slide appears to be stabilizing. Our poll shows shes gaining ground among democrats, a sign shes putting at least some of the concerns and controversy surrounding her candidacy to rest. Lets take a look at some of these new numbers. Clinton sits atop the democratic field at 42 , up five points from earlier this month. Now, shes followed by Bernie Sanders at 24 and joe biden at 22 . When you take biden out of the equation, her support soars. Shes at 57 in our new poll, while sanders, 28 . So in short, shes been climbing, and sanders has been falling. Their margin now, 29 points, compared to only 16 earlier this month. Now, this is why so Many Democrats are keeping such a close eye on whether joe biden decides to jump in. If he does, the democratic contest is so much more competitive. Theres no concrete timeline, but one democratic supportive candidate of biden tells me this morning, well likely know within the next two weeks. Hillary clinton has not commented on what she believes a biden candidacy would do to her race. She is trying to focus on her own campaign, trying to build that up in case he decides to run. She said sunday the Vice President deserves this space to make a decision. She also made an interesting comment, interesting window into what her new, Authentic Campaign is looking like. She was asked who the real Hillary Clinton is. I mean, look, i am a real person, with all the pluses and minuses that go along with being that. Ive been in the public eye for so long, that i think, you know, its like the feature you see in magazines sometimes, real people actually go shopping. You know . All laughter aside after a few reinventions along the way over the last few months, her b burden is to appear authentic to voters in a year theyre craving authenticity in a year more than ever. Thanks so much. Any moment, the mother of the little girl who became known as baby doe, along with her boyfriend, will stand before a judge. Theyll be arraigned today. Hes facing a murder charge. Shes been charged with accessory after the fact. After months of mystery, it was a 2yearold bella bond found on a boston beach back in june. The girls father now speaking out, saying his daughter was killed because mccarthy believed she was possessed by demons. I know with all my heart that rachelle would never do anything to hurt anybody. I was with the woman, the mother of my child. Jean is follwere waiting fo arraignment because we should get more information as soon as it begins. One of the issues conceivably can be bail, ask thats when you hear more information. 85 days is how long this little girl was a picture and a face to this whole country, but not knowing who she was. It was finally, cnn learned, allegedly someone staying with her mother that said, where is bella . Where is she . Allegedly, the mother said, bella is dead. Thats how it began. To get it to the arrest and the arraignment. Arraigned today will be her mother, rochelle bond, 40 years old, charged with accessory to murder after the fact. In other words, after she was deceased, after she was murdered. The boyfriend of the mother has been charged with murder. His name, michael mccarthy, 35 years old. As you said, carol, cnn learned that, allegedly, he punched her because he thought she was possessed. We dont know if thats the cause of death. We dont know if thats true, if thats an excuse, but that is what we have heard that has been said. Once again, this arraignment is set to begin this morning. In massachusetts, they can plead guilty. They are apprised of the charges against them, and then also, the issue of bail. Constitutionally, theres a right to bail. Not that youre going to get it, but the prosecutor will have to argue the seriousness of the crimes. We may hear some facts. All right. Thank you. When those two suspects walk into the courtroom, well get back to you. Thank you. We have live pictures of pope francis in cuba. His plane just landed. Did it land in cuba, the Third Largest city . Its the site of Christopher Columbus landing in 1492, in case youre interested. We dont expect the pope to speech now. We expect him to greet the crowds. Hell ditch the car, and then hell ride to revolution plaza. He will make a few remarks there. Then hell hold a mass there, which should be interesting. Well take you back to cuba after a break. Are you moving forward fast enough . Everywhere you look, it strategy is now business strategy. And a partnership with hp can help you accelerate down a path created by people, technology and ideas. To move your company from what it is now. To what it needs to become. Decisions, decisions. The new edge . This one would keep me organized. I could list all the days ive been banned from social media. Hmmm, wait this thing has builtin live broadcasting . I dont know what nerd came up with that, but its awesome. You think theyd censor pippas doggyolas . Censored, not censored. Censored, not censored. Introducing the Samsung Galaxy s6 edge and the note5. Pope francis is making history once again in cuba this hour. The popular pontiff is arriving, where hell bring his message after hope and love to a city no other pope has visited. This follows celebrating mass with thousands in havanas revolution plaza. He had a friendly and informal meeting with fidel castro. It lasted 40 minutes, and the pope exchanged books about religion with the communist leader. Cnns rosa flores is on the plane with the pope. She joins us now. Whats it like, rosa . Reporter good morning, carol. If you didnt know, ive been on the plane. Im in the back, and the pope is in the front of the aircraft. If youre taking a live look, youll see a lot of journalists in a few moments. Just like you mentioned, this is the second leg of pope francis visit to cuba. He was in havana and celebrated mass with thousands. Visited with fidel castro for about 30, 40 minutes. He exchanged gifts. Then, of course, he had a meeting with the current president of cuba. One of the interesting things where we just landed is this is the birth province of the castros. It gives you a little lay of the land. Were expecting pope francis to celebrate mass today at revolution square in holguin. Another revolution square, yesterday, we saw him celebrate mass in havana. Were going to take a look and see how what the crowds are like here. If theyre anything like we saw yesterday, theres going to be thousands of people waiting to celebrate mass with pope francis. Rosa, you gave us the facts as the great journalist you are. You gave us that, but i want the know what its like on board the plane. Where is the pope sitting . Has he walked through the plane . Have you seen him close up and personal . Reporter yes. This time, we didnt get to see the pope. It was a very, very short flight from havana to holguin. He boarded and went through to the seat. We didnt see him. When we flew from rome to havana, it was about a 12hour flight. Very shortly after we took off, pope francis came to the back of the plane. He greeted all of the journalists and then went aisle by aisle, talking to all the journalists, allowing them to introduce themselves and share a moment with pope francis. It was very special to be a part of that. I got to meet him, receive his blessing. Gave a little gift. It was a great moment, carol. Oh, my goodness. Were seeing the picture. Im jealous. The pope is now disembarking. Hell go to a waiting car and then switch to his pope mobile, right . Im not sure if well see the pope mobile this time. Im walking out just now, carol, so excuse the noise. We usually see the pope being greeted at the airport. One thing always stands out of the greetings weve seen at airports in cuba versus other countries, where we have seen the pope before. If youre taking a live look right now, if youre taking the pictures, carol, pope francis just walked out of the aircraft, being greeted by cardinals and other dignitaries. There are children waving cuban flags and receiving the pope here in holguin. This is the birth province of fidel and raul castro. Its interesting. Given some of the controversy you were mentioning moments ago involving the pope visiting fidel castro in his home. Carol . Ill let you get off the plane now. I know its hard to talk. Im sure the plane is packed with people. Many thanks. As we watch these pictures of pope francis disembarking, you can hear children singing in the background. Special choir, childrens choir in cuba. This is the first time that the pope has visited this particular cuban city. I think he will probably get into a car and travel to the center of the city, then trade off for his pope mobile, so he can ride along the streets for the people so the people can wave at him. Then its on to revolutionary plaza where, of course, as you heard rosa say, the pope will officiate a mass. I have to take a break. Back with more in the newsroom. When broker chris hill stays at laquinta and fires up free wifi, with a network thats now up to 5 times faster than before you know what he can do . Lets see if hes ready. He can swim with the sharks book your next stay at lq. Com donald trump, of course, is running for president. To the delight of uncles everywhere. But ive got to say, sure, donald trump seems racist, what else . That was actor and comedian Andy Sandberg, taking aim at president ial hopeful, donald trump at the emmys last night. Trump is now in the middle of a new controversy involving comments he made about muslims. On sunday, trump told jake tapper it wasnt people from sweden who attacks the United States on 9 11. We can be politically correct if you want, but certainly, are you trying to say we dont have a problem . I think everybody would agree. I have friends that are muslims. Theyre great people, amazing people, and most muslims, like most everything, i mean, these are fabulous people, but we certainly do have a problem. I mean, you have a problem throughout the world. Whats the problem . Well, you have radicals that are doing things. I mean, it wasnt people from sweden that blew up the world trade center, jake. Trump isnt the only one taking heat. Rival ben carson at the center of his own controversy for saying he does not believe the u. S. Should elect a muslim president. Do you believe that islam is consistent with the constitution . No, i dont. I do not. I would not advocate that we put a muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that. And would you ever consider voting for a muslim for congress . Congress is a different story, but it depends on who that muslim is and what their policies are. In the meantime, a new cnn poll shows trump and carson are losing steam, as Carly Fiorina and marco rubio ride a double digit bounce. With me to talk about this, cnn political congressmen kammentat president of the congressional leadership fund. Welcome, gentlemen. Thanks for being here. Morning. Ben, i dont even know what to make about seriously . Cant we move past this . Look, i think this all started with donald trump when he had the guy ask him the question saying barack obama isnt american, hes a muslim. Then you have this conversation come out of it, where were back at this issue yet again. What ben carson said is not as troubling to me because hes saying, i would not advocate for somebody that is muslim to be in the white house. Obviously, it goes against his beliefs as a christian. He has concerns about muslim extremism in this country. Hes saying that would not be my top priority. Wait a minute, ben. Wait a minute. Lets back up. You think it goes against Donald Trumps beliefs as a christian . Thats why hes opposed to a muslim being in the white house . Let me make this clear. I wouldnt advocate for somebody that is a muslim to be the front runner for the republican side. Let me also make it clear, if a conservative muslim is running against Hillary Clinton, im going to probably support the conservative muslim. It doesnt matter as much about the religion as it does, what do you stand for individually, and what type of muslim are you individually . If you are a conservative muslim, if you are calling out radical islam, then that is one thing completely different than if youre sympathizing with muslims, and also muslim excr e extremism. The fbi saying were investigating muslims in all 50 states in the country. When we see the boston bombing, whether it be fort hood shooting, we see some of these muslims are connected with local mosques, and they havent done a good enough job calling out extremism in this country, when many are attending some of the mosques and allowing them to be there. Theyre also investigating christians who converted, right . Its not just right . Its more complicated than that. Im not saying let me make this clear. Im not saying only muslims can be terrorists. Obviously, other people of other religions can be terrorists. What im saying is, again, ill make it abundantly clear, if i have the option im asking. Between christian and muslim, im going to pick the christian because they align with my moral beliefs and values. Thats normal in life, by the way. 50 of americans would not like me at the white house or people that believe what i believe in because im a conservative christian. Doesnt mean they hate me. No, no. I get it. Im playing devils advocate. Its important to do that on this topic. Sure. Care came out and said ben carson should drop out of the president ial race. Do you agree . No. He shouldnt drop out of the race. Hes sharing his views, the voters will decide whether or not what he said is relevant in the race. Theres a different topic we have here. Three different issues. We have donald trump talking about the president s faith and where he came from, and not calling out someone in one of his rallies for saying that. I think thats a mistake on his part. I dont think you win the republican nomination by going there. Agree. You have donald trump calling out muslim radicals. That is a successful strategy. Every republican candidate for president is going to talk about that because it is a problem in the country. Then you have ben carson saying he wouldnt vote for someone based on their religion. Thats dangerous. Most evangelical christians in this country that are voting are concerned about religious little bits. Theyre concerned about the government getting in the way and not protecting their faith. Its a dangerous road to go down. If you think what carson is saying is dangerous, why shouldnt he drop out . Because, look, you cant ask someone drop out every time they Say Something you disagree with. Even if its dangerous . You have the iowa kcaucuses its not a successful strategy to win but its up to him. Hes drawing a lot of the voters. Theyll decide whether or not this is going to matter for him. He has a lot of other policies hes been talking about, as well. Its a little absurd and them making headlines to call on someone to make out because of a view they have. I disagree. I dont think you should he said he would not advocate for somebody who is muslim to be in the white house. I dont think thats as extreme of a statement as some are making it out to be. I understand why you have groups that are saying he should drop out, because this gets their name back out there. They say this is islam phobia. I disagree. There are many people that would not advocate for people of a different religion for them in the position of power at the white house. We see voters do this every four years. We have an issue with faith. It matters to some, doesnt matter to others. A lot of comparing it to what the alternative is. Ill say this, id be terrified of a socialist more than a conservative muslim, for example. I have to leave it there. This has been a fascinating conversation. Thanks to both for joining me this morning. I appreciate it. Thanks. Thanks. Still to come, millions may be enthusiastic about the popes visit to cuba and the United States but others are criticizing the pope for still not doing enough about the churchs sex abuse scandals. Censored, not censored. Introducing the Samsung Galaxy s6 edge and the note5. All right. I want to take you briefly to a boston area courtroom. Youre looking at a man named michael mccarthy, accused of killing baby doe, who is bella bond. A little girl whose body was found on a beach near boston in a plastic garbage bag. Supposedly, this man killed this little girl because he thought she was possessed by the devil. Now, also in court, you can see the mother there. Shes in the gray hoodie behind the glass. Her name is rachelle bond, also charged in her own daughters death. Well have more on this in the next hour of newsroom. In other news this morning, the pope just arrived in holguin, a city no other pope has ever visited. In less than an hour, the pope is expected to hold a mass in front of thousands and thousands of people. When pope francis comes to the United States, and arrives in philadelphia, word is, hell meet privately with victims of church sex abuse. It is extremely important to advocates who have been pressuring the vatican to deal openly and effectively with clergy who abuse children. Pope francis has vowed to do that, but has he . Reporter Megan Petersons paintings are beautiful but depict rape, pain. The paintings are always surrounding you when youre in this room. How does that feel . I think its like the abuse. Its not who i am, but its became a part of me. Its, in my mind, sometimes i have to turn them around. Reporter peterson says she was raped by her priest when she was 15, called a liar by the church. Her alleged attacker maintaining his innocence, but later convicted of sexually assaulting another teenager. So pope francis, he said that he was going to take care of the sexual abuse problem within the Catholic Church. So as a victim, how do you think hes doing . I always want to say that there is potential. That he has potential. Because i feel if i lose that thread of hope as an individual, like it just its too much to bear. Reporter pope francis vowed to cleanse the church of bishops who fail to protect children. In july, he held a private mass for six victims of church sex abuse. I beg your forgiveness, he told them. Over the last decade, the vatican dismissed more than 848 priests and disciplined some 2500 members of the clergy. 100,000 children in the United States may have been abused by clergy. I think its the last chance really for the Catholic Church to get it right. Reporter Marie Collins is part of a Vatican Commission created by pope francis to protect children from abusers. I was totally shocked. Did you think it was real . Not really because i thought i must be the last person they would be calling on. You know . Reporter collins was sexually abused by a priest in ireland. She is an outspoken critic of the church. In your mind, the church is worth saving . Of course. I mean, the church meant a lot to me over many years, as i said. My abuser didnt take my faith away. I nearly lost it by the way it was a lot easier to forgive my abuser than to forgive the church and to forgive the Church Leadership for what they did to me. Reporter collins says there has been progress, most importantly, the principle of accountability has been accepted. If a bishop covers up abuse, the church holds him responsible. Still, she says, change is shockingly slow. The Commission Formed over a year ago has yet to be fully funded. What . You havent gotten funding yet . No. Were actually our first meeting was may 2014. What can you do without funding . We have day to day, getting along funding, but we dont know what our budget for the actual work were doing is going to be. Reporter Megan Peterson isnt surprised. Do you consider yourself catholic . No, i dont. Could you ever again . I guess i cant see into the future. I dont think so, but i also have absolutely no problem with the religion. I mean, ive never felt that i need to destroy it or its this terrible thing. So if you suffer abuse at the hands of clergy, go to the police . Go to the police, yeah. An emotional and recordbreaking night at the 67th annual emmy awards. History was made for africanamerican women in television and hbo had an epic performance but like any good drama, one of the most moving moments came near the end of the show. It was a great, great night and celebrating all sorts of televisions best in show, carol, but one thing you can say for sure, the 67th emmy awards did not disappoint. It was a night of firsts for hollywood. Viola davis, how to get away with murder. Reporter viola davis making history last night. The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity. You cannot win an emmy for roles that are simply not there. Reporter becoming the first africanamerican woman to win an emmy, grabbing an emmy for her performance in how to get away with murder. This is the first emmy win and 16th nomination for jon hamm. Reporter jon hamm scooping up an enemy for his iconic role as the tortured don draper on mad men after seven previous losses. There has been a terrible mistake, clearly. Reporter hbo dominating with a whopping 43 victories. Their fantasy series game of thrones, shattering an academy record, defeating the west wing by winning more emmys in one year. Hbo with best comedy. I miss you guys so much. Reporter surprising everyone, tracy morgan, mark his return by presenting best drama. His first time back on stage since that serious car accident last year that left him in a coma for eight days. Morgans fellow saturday night live alum Andy Sandberg hosting the show for the first time. Its interesting to note in the recent years the streaming Services Like netflix, hulu, amazon, they made impressive showings at the emmys. This year a traditional tv network, albeit cable, like hbo, holding its own and proving it can turn out quality programming. We should point hbo is owned by our parent company, time warner. Thats fair with you. Stay with me because were going to do this thing with michelle turner. Can we do that right now . Its a benefit of having your own show. Two of my favorite women on television at the same time. I cant handle it. You can do it. Frankly, it was such an historic night. They got into race and politics and sexism. What is it like inside the arena . Well, its an intimate venue because it is at the microsoft theater in los angeles. While all of us see the audience and think its a huge arena, its actually very intimate. We were talking about Andy Sandberg and talking about how he did. Its different playing to the room because im not sure if he was as funny to the room as he was to some people at home. I love his humor so i thought he was very funny. Its a different dynamic when youre sitting there and there are commercial breaks and trying to get up. So, its a little different. It plays differently. But the big story this year is diversity. This is the most Diverse Group of nominees in emmys history. Congratulations, hollywood, you did it yeah. Racism is over. Dont factcheck that. I love it. Do you think there is a bit of the fact because its so early on in award season, it isnt even the start of it, theres more tolerance for these shows . People were saying it was enjoyable, they liked, it they laughed. It wasnt one of those nights where youre like, my goodness, its dragging on. The whole show moved and it was enjoyable. It did move. It was enjoyable. It was long. It was three hours long, so it was a pretty good size show. I think youre right. I think it has something to do with this is the first kind of big award show of the season that we see and everyones excited about it. Its the prime time enemy awards so prime time television. It wasnt people from sweden that blew up the world trade center. Also, the man accused of killing baby bella allegedly thought she was possessed. Hes in court this morning, along with bellas mother. Well take you there live. Plus, pope francis heads to the United States this week where hell address a joint session of congress. Some are asking, so, what happened to the separation of church and state . Lets talk live in the cnn newsroom. Good morning. Im carol costello. Thank you for joining me. Happening moments ago, the mother of that little girl who became known as baby doe, along with her boyfriend, stood rachelle bond, and michael mccarthy. The prosecutor briefing the judge. Heres a bit of what he had to say. By way of brief background, on june 25th of this year, a woman walking her dog on deer island found a plastic contractors construction bag and noted that her dog had run over to it and was pawing at it. Very interesting, the contents. She went over to the bag after asking another person to come with her. Opened the bag partially and saw what appeared to be the limb of a small child. She immediately called 911. Massachusetts state police and other First Responders responded. And they opened the bag and found the body of an unknown, unidentified, approximately 3 to 4yearold child, based on estimates of her size. She was partially she was in the beginning stages of decomposition. She was wearing white leggings with black polka dots and two blankets, zebra print blanket and another blanket with her. There was moisture in the bag but it remained essentially sealed at the time it was found. An investigator found a bag was seen in that same spot the previous noontime, that is the 24th of june, indicating to investigators the bag had either washed up on the beach or in some event on the beach for approximately 4 hours. There ensued a threemonth exhaustive search comprising thousands of maybe tens of thousands of detective hours spent trying to identify the girl without success. Detectives traced leads all across massachusetts. They had hundreds of tips and leads and conducted scores of wellbeing checks. They also put out an advisory that had a picture of the forensic reconstruction of the girls face. Thats what a forensic reconstruction expert believed the girl most likely looked like in life. They were unable to recover fingerprints because of skin slippage. The detectives worked tirelessly to try to identify her, but they were unable to do so until the morning of well, until wednesday, the 16th of this month, just last wednesday. Were going to jump away from this to talk a little to talk more about whats happening. You saw a couple of people in the courtroom. The camera was panning to them. The man with the long hair is Mike Mccarthy, thats the boyfriend. The woman in the gray hoodie behind the plexiglass is the girls mother. The man in the ball hat with blue shirt is the girls biological father. He says rachelle bond would never hurt his daughter. I want to go to jean casarez. This is the arraignment, initial appearance. You can see theyre behind glass, which happens occasionally but its a little unusual. We heard some backstory here. This just came to authorities, the nfginformation of all this, last week. It was a lifelong friend of the boyfriend in this occasion michael mccarthy, who had lived with the couple. He accompanied them very recently to boston medical center. And the mother, who is charged with accessory after the fact to murder was saying, oh, im so glad. I havent done drugs in several days now. So, the lifelong friend said, thats great because now you can get bella back because shes with the department of children and family services. The mother breaks down and says, i cant get bella back because bellas dead. He went to the boyfriend, mccarthy and he said, no, shes with the department of children and family. And the mother said she had gone into the bedroom and had seen one night in june, the boyfriend standing over bella. Bellas face was red. Her demeanor was just very sullen. She picked her up, she realized she was dead. And that friend then went to his sister and the sister went to Boston Police and the friend is now saying, allegedly, that they believe she was possessed by the devil and she would be put in a room for hours on end, yelled at, screamed at, physically hurt. But thats how this case came to light. When they saw that forensic recreation of that little girl, this is the friend that lived with the couple and his sister. So, joey, the d. A. In this case, is asking for no bond for Mike Mccarthy and 1 million bond for the mother. Do you think those requests will be granted . Its appropriate. It really is. In terms of the father, its a murder charge. Theres no death penalty, of course, in massachusetts but you face the possibility of life in prison without the possibility of any type of parole. As to the mother, because shes an accessory, not in fact charged with the actual killing, but with harboring, concealing and otherwise knowing the boyfriend committed this offense and trying to conceal him from the police. Thats punishable by up to seven years. I certainly think its appropriate to ask for that and i think it would be within the judges discretion to grant that request of the prosecution. Its unbelievable. Thanks so much. Well keep an eye on this hearing. More following the popes trip to cuba. They are outraged by carsons lightning round comments that he wouldnt even consider electing a muslim to the white house. Heres what carson said on nbc. So, do you believe that risi 12 point, carson losing about 5. Its still those top three candidates, the outsider nonpolitician candidates, folks who have never been elected to public office. That trend at least is holding. Thank you. A spokesperson for ben carson is defending those controversial comments. Earlier today carsons Business Manager, armstrong williams, told cnns carson isnt afraid to ruffle feathers and hes not going to take back what he said. This is why hes not trying to be politically correct. This is america. Its a place of freedom of speech. And freedom of religion. And freedom of religion. This is not an issue. It is not an issue of religion to dr. Carson. This is an issue of ones belief system of how theyre going to govern. Your beliefs, what you believe in, how you look upon people, how you value people is dictated by what you believe. If you search yourself deeply and ask yourself at this time in the history of our country, in the question posed to him, which he asked and answered truthfully is he would not be comfortable with someone who shares the islamic muslim faith in the white house. And if is let me finish up. If dr. Carson because of his love for america, he is willing. Everything is not about winning the white house for him. Its about standing up for what he believes in, telling the truth, even if it makes cnn and others uncomfortable, it is what he believes. Is dr. Carson comfortable with anyone other than a christian being president . It is not about christian. It is not about jew. It is not about religion. It is about what one believes and what they would advocate if they become president of these yashgts a place and you i, no doubt about it, love, cherish and want to protect. And dr. Carson is saying what he believes, and he believes it and he will not take it back. Joining me rebecca burnt and republican strategist, kayly, also a trump supporter. Thank you for being here. Thank you. So, do believe a muslim should be president . I agree with dr. Carson. His point is fairly uncontroversial. He said hes uncomfortable with a president that abides by shariah law, which calls for cutting off ones hand he didnt say shariah law. He said muslim. Muslim means shariah law. That is the legal code for the muslim faith. When he clarified to the hill, he said he is uncomfortable with a president who professes shariah law. If they were to renounce that, he would be okay with muslim. You think muslims follow shariah law . I dont but its a prevalent part of3vi the islamic faith an fair question to ask someone who wants to be president of the United States. The c. A. R. E. Representative earlier said a false hood. He said ben carson is calling for article 6 of religious test. Thats untrue. Ben carson said he would never advocate for a muslim president if they profess shariah law. He said he would not want a muslim to be perfect United States. Isnt that what you heard . Yes. Its very interesting because ben carson over the course of his campaign has established himself as a very religious candidate. He appeals very strongly to evangelical christian voters. At same time, he has said and has been very careful to say that if he were elected president , he would not let his religion necessarily interfere with the laws of this country. So to think and to say that a muslim would not do the same if they were elected president seems inconsistent at the very least. The constitution, article 6, forbids a religious test for a requirement of holding a government position. Thats what the constitution says. So, no religion should be taken into account when it comes to electing a president. Not whits not a violation o constitution. Its simply ben carsons preference. Those are very different things. As to the previous guests point, as to rebeccas point, i really think its important to put this into context and to see that ben carson separated his faith and his Government Office and he is merely calling for someone a muslim who wants to be president to do the same. Shariah law i might be a little open to that but you just heard temperature hina jones, 50 of Trump Supporters believe president obama is a muslim, right . What ben carson is speaking to, what donald trump is speaking to in some of his remarks even is really this unfortunate trend among some Republican Voters in really being antimuslim. So, its appealing to sort of the worst qualities of some voters and making them feel that its okay to feel that way. Maybe ben carson will win some support from this but i think hell risk losing a lot of support, too. Especially when his Business Manager, armstrong williams, was asked, well, does this mean you wouldnt let a muslim serve in congress . We should ask if it would preclude a muslim from serving on the supreme court. If you look at the other branches of government, we need to pose this question to ben carson as well. I think hes going to get a lot of scrutiny there. I have to leave it there. Thanks to you both. I appreciate it. Bernie sanders, lets turn to the democrats, Bernie Sanders pumped up a crowd, about 3,000 at the university of New Hampshire last night. Whats interesting, the Washington Post says the crowd was about five times the size of what Hillary Clinton drew on the very same campus just two days earlier. But while sanders is gaining ground in that early election state, Hillary Clinton appears to be gaining momentum nationwide. According to a new cnn orc poll, clinton now leads with 42 of registered voters from early september. She has gained a bit and sanders has lost a bit. That poll includes joe biden, though, as a candidate. If the Vice President decides not to run, clintons lead becomes even more ndominant, doubling the support for sanders. During his recent visit to south america, francis called capitalism the dung of the devil, but will he utter those words inside the Nations Capital . Usa usa reporter what about those president ial candidates . We have to build a wall, folks. Reporter that charged antiimmigration rhetoric, polar opposite to the pope. Im not sure if hes worried about alienating people. Hell be encouraging but he speaks the truth. Reporter his speech before the United Nations, at a time hundreds of thousands of christians are fleeing persecution in syria, iraq, afghanistan. Will he put World Leaders in the hot seat, asking them to do more to help refugees, or will he praise the nations who have already accepted thousands . No one really knows what francis will say during his more than 20 speeches. If he speaks off the cuff, cuba, congress and the United Nations better get ready for a coming to jesus moment. Nice ending, rosa flores. Pope francis, while still popular, is not the undisputed homecoming king anymore. As he steps foot on american soil, the popes Approval Ratings according to gallup have taken a tumble from 76 in february of 14 to 59 today. Much can be attributed to the popes political views, although he would say hes decidedly not political. But the popes views on Climate Change, gay people and undocumented immigrants have angered Many Americans, have made them feel uncomfortable. The president of the Southern Baptist seminary joins me. Why do you think the popes Approval Ratings have fallen, especially among conservatives . I think the Biggest Issue there is the fact that the pope has raised all kinds of expectations, some kind of major liberal transformation of the church. Frankly, i think thats probably his agenda. On the other hand, he is, as a writer for the boston globe called him, pend you lulum pope. He swings back and forth. The Catholic Church continues to teach on homosexuality and defining marriage as only the union of man and women, and yet he have sent signals that have given those in the Lbgt Community the idea that maybe hell liberalize the church on that. You have a whole host of issues on which he has sent signals to the left. And then he, nonetheless, has not changed the doctrinal substance of the church. Then he comes along on economics and on Climate Change and veers far to the left. And so when i heard you say that the vatican claims its not political, almost every paragraph of that incyclical is political. Quite frankly, if hes genuinely concerned with human flourishing, the direction he points is not going to work. I think Many Americans recognize that. I did read the encyclical. He puts Climate Change in moral terms, affecting the most poor and vulnerable, so we can differ on that point. Pope francis will make history when he speaks before a joint session of congress. Do you have a problem with that . I have a big problem with that. As evangelical christian and as an american, no pope of the roman Catholic Church has ever addressed a joint session of congress before and for good reason. For most of our nations history, there would have been tremendous controversy about sending an ambassador for the United States to the vatican. The vatican state is really not recognized because its a state. Its about 100 acres. Has less than 1,000 in population. Its because hes head of the roman Catholic Church. When you put it that way, the pretense this is somehow a diplomatic visit really falls apart. Pope francis is here because hes the head of government of a state with less than 1,000 people. And, you know, frankly, they would fit in a Shopping Mall parking lot. Hes there because hes Supreme Leader of a roman Catholic Church. Thats the big question. Why would the congress of the United States join in a joint session to hear one head of one religious group . I think its a very, very dangerous precedent. Paul gosar, hes catholic. Hes going to boycott the popes address before congress. This is what he said in an oped. Quote, media reports indicate his holiness intends to focus the brunt of his speech on Climate Change. A climate that has been changing since first created in genesis. More troubling is the fact that this Climate Change talk has adopted all of the socialist talking points, wrapped in science and ideology into Climate Change and is being presented to guilt people into leftist policies. So, do you agree with this congressman . I think he raises some valid points. Hes coming from a different perspective. Im speaking as a noncatholic. George will in the Washington Post on sunday made the most important points here, and that is, if this pope wants to help the poor, he has to do it in a way that actually helps the poor. And if he wants to increase the middle class, hes going to have to actually suggest a policy that increase the middle class and lead to human flourishing. The policies he both implies and calls for in that encyclical are, frankly, not going to head in that direction and they havent anywhere in the world where they have been tried. Last question. Will you be listening to the popes address before the joint session of congress . Oh, ill be listening, of course. As oon evangelical my problem is not with this pope, first and foremost. Thats more a catholic problem. Mine is ee vvangelical with the papacy. Nonetheless, its going to make news and ill be watching it. Thank you for being with me this morning. President ial hopefuls, standing by controversial comments that he would not back a muslim president. I would not advocate we put a muslim, i absolutely dont agree with that. You know, there are more american muslims than episcopalians. Youre talking about a radical strain. Dr. Carson was asked his opinion. His opinion was, the timing at this point, he would not vote for muslim in the white house. This is why hes not a politician. This is why hes not trying to be politically correct. This is america. Armstrong, let me read to you article 6 of the constitution, which says that anyone of any religion can serve in public office. Here it is. No religious test shall ever be qui required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States. Dr. Carsons belief system violates that part of the constitution. Dr. Carson, alisyn, as youre alluding to, was not speaking about religion, not at all. His, like most americans in their hearts, if they search themselves and they ask questions, if you see whats going on in the world today and what were becoming as a nation, if you search yourself deeply and ask yourself, at this time in the history of our country, in the question that was posed to him, which he asked and answered truthfully, is that he would not be comfortable with someone who shares the islamic muslim faith in the white house. Is dr. Carson only if dr. Carson let me finish up. If dr. Carson because of his love for america, he is willing everything is not about winning the white house for him. And dr. Carson is saying what he believes. And he believes it, alisyn, and he will not take it back. Muslim civil Rights Groups have called for him to get out of the race. Obviously, thats not happening. But will he sit down with muslims today to clarify how he feels about them . Only, alisyn and others feel needs to be clarified. You dont have to clarify what you believe in. It is consistent. You believe in who you are. You believe in america. You love this country. You see whats happening in europe. You see what is happening in the middle east, in the world. You see whats happening on our military bases where people use their faith to shoot our innocent men and women who put their lives on the front line. What is happening to america . If dr. Carson is the voice thats willing to stand and speak for those americans who are solemn in their hearts, who dont want to speak this Inconvenient Truth, then let the chips fall where they may. He believes in telling the truth up. May not like the truth, but it is the truth. And when you tell the truth, alisyn, theres nothing to apologize for.
