Doing a live shot this morning. Police are actively looking for the gunman. Schools in the area are on lock down. There is disturbing video of the event circulating on social media right now. Alexandra field is here, Brian Stelter. Both are following the story this morning. This just broke, what, 6 45 eastern this morning. It wasnt like a bad neighborhood. She was the morning reporter for the station. This is a 24yearold woman, allison parker. We have video that captured the live shot this morning. It is some of the disturbing video you will see. It deeply shakes you. This is a young woman out there in the middle of a water park doing a morning report. All of a sudden you hear this burst of gunfire. You hear the young woman react. We counted about eight gunshots alone just as this video plays. You can see the photographer loses control of the cam, it pans to the ground. You dont see anything beyond that, just the chaos erupting. The people who are back at the station watching this live, not to mention all the people who are out there watching this on air. They come to learn, they have confirmed this morning, two of their employees, a 24yearold, a 27yearold, killed. No reason that is apparent right now. No shooter in custody. Its crazy. This is what you call a fluff live shot. It was a morning show. They were having fun. It was a feature story about a water park. Brian, what can you tell us about this reporter and photographer . People at the station didnt know it was happening. What makes this all the more sickening is that both of the people that were killed were no relationships with other staffers at the station. You know how these small stations are. Were sta eere talking about a station in virginia. People spend long hours together. Adam ward, the photographer was engaged to a morn producer at the station. It was her last day on the morning shift. She literally maybe saw her fiance shot . You hate to say it, but yes. Allison parker was dating an anchor at the station as well. Theyre all at work. The two surviving members of this relationships is. The station is now paying tribute. At 8 45 they came on the air. The general manager announced its been devastating for the whole staff, of course. We know there is this active search for the shooter in this community. That means every precaution need to be taken. There will be lock downs in effect as they search for this person. We know that allison was in the middle of an interview. She was live on air speaking to someone. We believe that that woman she was speaking to was not injured, so she could be critical for police in identifying the shooter and describing the circumstances which are so not obvious, not apparent to any of us who are watching as to what would provoke these gunshots. And any violate death is tragic, but to imagine someone is out doing a feature story, just a normal day. Its not as if they were in a location perceived to be dangerous or apparently needed to take precautions. They were just doing a normal job. And the idea that viewers saw it, to me, doubles or triples the awfulness of it. I want to go to joe jac jackalone. I saw the video. In almost 21 years of Law Enforcement ive never seen anything like this. I saw it myself too. And the photographer and the reporter, it was just your standard, you know, kind of everyday interview, fun interview in the morning with a woman at water park. Suddenly you hear this eruption of gunfire. What do you make of it . Well, investigators are going to have to piece into it and see exactly who was the target. Was the victim the target . I dont think so. Could the lady they had been interviewing be the target . We always look at why people do that, i always refer to it as the means, opportunity and motive. Why did somebody do this . Theyre going to have to find out whats going on. This is just standard investigative procedure. Maybe theres a divorce going on what have you. Who knows . These are the pieces of the puzzle that Law Enforcement are going to have to put together. Basically they have not much to go on right now. I want to show some video from wdbj. This appeared after the shooting. Lets watch that now. We are following breaking news this morning out of Franklin County, news that has affected our wdbj 7 family very deeply. Our morning crew was life this morning at Smith Mountain lake when shots were fired at 6 45. Our general manager jeff marks is here to tell us more about what happened. Kim, it was my very very sad duty to report that we have determined through the help of the police and our own employees that allison and adam died this morning shortly after 6 45 when the shots rang out. We do not know the motive. We do not know who the suspect or who the killer is. We do know that the Franklin County sheriff i just got off the phone with Franklin County sheriff overton and the state police. They are working very diligently to track down both the motive and the person responsible for this terrible crime against two fine journalists. I cannot tell you how much they were loved. Alison and adam by the wdbj 7 team. They both were in love. And well talk about that a little more with other members of the team here. And our hearts are broken and our sympathies go to the entire staff here, but tals parealso ts and family of adam ward and Alison Parker who were just out doing their job today near Smith Mountain lake. Whats the name of the plaza, kim . Bridgewater plaza. Well tell you more as we can. We have other members of the team here today, holding ba ini tears frankly. Gene is the coanchor with chris hurst and chris has said its okay to say that he and alison were an item and involved. Chris is here and quite devastated as is melissa ought who was engaged to adam. This was her last morning show and we were celebrating that with her today. Alison had brought in balloons. I brought in a cake. We were so happy for them. She had gotten another job. And adam was going to follow her her soon after. And a lot of good things were happening for adam and alison. Shes a rock star here at alison. We just came off the child abuse special monday night. She was a huge, huge part of that, really. Just came off like a pro. Theyre both from this area. Adam graduated from salem high school. Alison from martinsville high school. Graduated from amu early with honors. Such a Bright Future ahead for both of them. Adam had just told me i think im going to get out of news and do something else, following his fiance down to charlotte. Out covering the news, just solid Virginia Tech fan. We get here really early in the morning. When they come in, they make this newsroom come alive. Theyre going to be missed. Adam has been with us quite a few years. I believe started in the production department. He did. Were going to break away from this right now. If youre just joining us, a terrible thing out of the monita, virginia, near roanoke, virginia. A reporter doing a run of the mill, fluffy kind of story at a water park when gunfire broke out. You hear at least eight gunshots in the background. This reporter and photographer were shot to death on air. Just a terrible thing. You were just seeing their colleagues talking about them, remembering them. I just cant imagine what shock they are in this morning. Brian stelter, you were watching the video. There is a glimpse of the gunman, a tiny one. There does appear to be. That screen grab is givbeginnino circulate. You can see a male figure who appears to be holding the gun. That imagine is obviously circulating. The Police Obviously have that image as well. Maybe that will be of some use. I have to say i so deeply admire what we just watched. I dont know how anyone would be able to keep composure like that having to report on the deaths of colleagues so immediately. Our hearts go out to them. I admire their ability to speak so warmly and calmly about their colleagues and friend they had just lost. I was just talking about this earlier before i went on air. Um, you know, i guess it wasnt totally unexpected to me that this sort of thing happened, because reporters and photographers, you know we talk about a lot. We know this is a reality right now that journalists face all around the world, including our colleagues here at cnn, that you put yourself in the public position, youre out in places that are exposed. Every morning you talk to colleagues who are in war zones, who walk into natural disasters. What this young woman and her photographer were doing this morning is considered one of the pleasures of our job, one of the privileges of our job where we get to go somewhere. We have fun, share something with the community, it is not about the highest ideals of the profession. Its not about putting your life on the line. Its simply about sharing whats good and positive. Morning tv is a special time of day. People are sitting at home getting their days ready. People like alison and adam were out there every day on the morning shift working well before most people were awake to give people a sense of what was going to happen that day. Mornings are a special time. And its all the more awful for people to see the shooting on live tv at that time of day. Thank you so much. Im going to take a break. There is breaks news out of monita, virginia. A wdbj reporter and her photographer were shot to death at a water park while they were doing an onair reporter. The young reporter, the woman you see there in that picture, was asking questions. You see the gentleman beside her. He was shooting the video. Gunfire erupted. Eight shots rang out and two young people were dead. Lets listen to wbdjs general manager jeff marks. He details the incident. We are following breaking news out of the Franklin County, news that has affected our wdbj family deeply. Our morning crew was live at Smith Mountain lake when shots were fired at 6 45. Our general manager jeff marks is here to tell us more about what happened. Kim, it is my very, very sad duty to report that we have determined through the help of the police and our own employees that alison and adam died this morning shortly after 6 45 when the shots rang out. We do not know the motive. We do not know who the killer is. We do know that the Franklin County sheriff i just got off the phone with sheriff overton. I just got off the phone before that with the state police. They are working diligently to track down both the motive and the person responsible for this terrible crime against two fine journalists. I cannot tell you and again, those fine journalists adam ward and Alison Parker. That gunman is still on the loose. It is an active crime scene in that area. Schools are on lockdown. Wdbjs twitter feed is lighting up. We love you alison and adam. We are going to show you what went down at 6 45 eastern. Were on the going to show us once. I want to warn you if you find these kinds of things disturbing, please leave the room. Talk about why its important to get these Business Leaders involved. Well, this is our community. We want to come together. We want to share information that can help us grow and develop, to provide a better experience. Were seeing tourism. [ gunfire ] [ screaming ] its just horrifying and shocking. These were young people. Alison parker was 24 years old. She had just graduated from college in 2012. Adam ward was 27 years old. He was thinking of leaving the media to go with his fiance to start a new life. Its unbelievably sad. The shooter is still out there somewhere. I do want your reaction to this video, joe. Yes. I mean, whats going to happen here is theyre going to lock down this entire area. Nobodys going anywhere. Theyre going to be stopping cars, setting up roadblocks. They have to examine everybody in that park too. In water parks theres a lot of places to hide, bushes and stuff like that. The Law Enforcement officers have to be mindful of their own safety right now. Somebody could be popping out of the bushes at this point. We have a good snapshot of his photo. You could still pick this guy out. Somebody who would know him, especially in this area, is going to know who this guy is. And theyre going to find out who he is and execute search warrants at his house. The police wont give you his name right away even if they do know. They want to execute a warrant first. We have no idea what his motive would be. But the police are going to have to develop a theory in order to go forward and what they can figure out and piece together in this tragedy. Does it appear to you, joe, that the reporter and photographer were targeted . Well, it seems that way, because theres another female there that goes unscathed. I mean, weve seen a lot of stupid things happen on live tv recently. Kids and adults think they can do anything they want to reporters. Weve seen them be pushed, attacked, robbed on air just recently. We need to come up with some sort of ground rules about how far you can get between the reporters and stuff. I do a lot of this with you guys and other agencies. People that come up, some of them are intimidating to the reporters and stuff too. These guys and girls are hard working people. Theyre carrying equipment. Theyre easy targets for these people. Im getting more information from the general manager after the wbdj. I just got an email containing that information. The shooting went down at 6 45 a. M. Eastern time. The gunman is believed to be a man. Fired six to seven times. The station itself is not running the video at this time. We are only going to run it once an hour and well do it with a warning. The station is working closely with sheriff overton in this case. They do not believe the subject being interviewed was injured at all. Alison parker, 24 years old. Her photographer, adam ward was 27 years old. There is a report from a local newspaper that maybe the person we saw being interviewed was maybe shot, wounded. The station is saying that the person being interviewed was not wounded. In the video we saw there, if we analyze it appears the gunman was coming from behind. Maybe the situation where the lifesupport reporters on air doing the interview just had no idea. Theyll closely analyze that video. Its very clear to the layman watching that video, thewarning. The first disruption you hear is actually the gunshot and then that barrage of six to seven gunshots. You have to admire adam ward, the photographer. That camera did not go off. He may be responsible for catching a killer, right . Ive got to take a break. Well be back. Alison parker and adam ward were gunned down while they were doing a live shot at a water park in monita. The gunman is still on the loose. Schools in the area are on lockdown. Police are doing what they can to find the gunman. Were going to get back to this story, but first we must check the market. Alison kosik is at the New York Stock Exchange with more. Right now markets are doing great, up 406 points. Back to our breaking news out of moneta, virginia, near roanoke. A very tiny place. A photographer and a reporter doing a live shot at a water park this morning were shot to death live on the air. It was a live shot about, i would suppose, tourism in that part of virginia. Nothing serious. Not a high crime area. But at least eight shots rang out. Some of those shots hitting that reporter and photographer who fell dead on the air this morning. Its just mind boggle right now. The governor of virginia just tweeting out about the senseless violence going on not only in virginia but across the country. We do have a bit of breaking news surrounding this sorry. Brian stelter, i know youve been following this. Now, there was a woman that the reporter was interviewing when those shots rang out. Unfortunately she was shot as well. The station original believed she was not wounded, but she was wounded. We see her on camera there vicki gardener. Shes the executive director of the Smith Mountain lake chamber of commerce. She was being interviewed about that. She was shot in the back, im told. She says that vicki gardener is in surgery right now. We dont have any word on her condition. What did she do for a living . Her title was the executive director of the chamber of commerce, promoting the lake. Very popular area in this community for people, especially in the summer. We know at the moment she has not died but she has been wounded in the shooting. News stations across the country are on edge, especially here in new york city. What can you tell us . That extends beyond this community because we do not have a motive yet. Police do not have the shooter in custody. Were now learning that the nypd is stepping up security at news stations around the city. That means you could see increased Police Presence outside of those police stations. This is not unprecedented but it certainly is a reaction to what happened in virginia. No motive to understand why those potentially three people would have been targeted by this country. People watching this right now, congregating, talking amongst each other and trying to conjure up what it must be like for those local workers. The station managers and directors and anchors and producers on the air now having to cover themselves in the most tragic way possible. One of the ironic and erie thi eerie is as the camera man was shot he was still rolling. And they might have caught a picture of the gunman. We cant see his face there. We can zoom out and we may be able to see his face and the gun as well. Joe jackalone is our former nypd detech pctivdetective. Youve seen the shot. What can you see from this image . All video has value to it. No matter how blurry it is there is a better picture going on on social media through twitter. I just tweeted it out to you guys. You could see his whole face. So somebody who sees this guy will be able to pick him out, no question about it. We need to find this guy right away, because hes a threat not only to the community, Law Enforcement out there as well. Theyre going to build their theories around whats going on. We hope they sent two detectives to the hospital to see if they can get a statement. Thats a hit or miss generally because the medical staff has to do their thing. But investigators want to get something on here because we want to make sure this ends at the water park and doesnt go any further. This manmgunman is still on loose. That appears to be a gun in this mans hand. Am i right about that . Yes. Its definitely a gun in his right hand. You could see it. It looks like hes pointing it down to whoever was laying on the ground there, more than likely the cameraman. We dont know if he was just covering him to make sure he wasnt getting up or if he was intending on killing him if he was still alive. Its a great video. It looks like the cameraman is going to be able to help catch his own killer. Video plays an Important Role on this, cell phone records too. I hope theyre dumping the cell phone records in that area to see if we can get any hits on anything that was going on there, any phone communications between the reporters and the person they were talking to. It will be important. So theres a lot of things detectives are going to have to go through to see if they can find this guy right away. Can you tell what kind of gun it is . Well, just from the picture there, probably not. But since theres at least eight rounds fired in rapid succession you could say he had an automatic, not a revolver. Its 6 45 at the water park. Theres not a lot of car there is. Hopefully they will do a vehicle canvas and look at all the cars in the parking lot to see whos an employee and whos not to see if they can get a name. They could have pictures of this guy coming in and out, driving up. This is how investigators do this stuff. Its going to take a little bit of time. The media will have to be a little patient because they dont want to release too much information right away. We dont want to scare this guy off and make it a national manhunt. Were working on getting our viewers a better picture of this man so they can help as well. Alison parker was just 24 years old. She was the reporter who was shot and killed. She was engaged to be married. She was looking forward to her marriage and a happy life. And oddly enough she appeared on cnn with me thanksgiving of 2014. I want you to get to know Alison Parker better. Lets watch that report from 2014. What it looks like in roanoke right now. This is Alison Parker from wdbj in roanoke. Its pretty. It is. Its such a beautiful sight. What youre see right now started out as heavy rain very early in morning, but clearly a different picture. That snow is just coming down. Carol. All right. Everyone be careful. Thank you so much Alison Parker from wdbj in roanoke. Yeah. And we dont want to skimp on talking about the victims. This was a young woman who just graduated from college in 2012. She had her first tv job in her hometown. I hate to say it, but maybe her parents were watching. It just breaks your heart. It does break your heart when you see that, when you look at that live shot, when you watch her talking to you just ten months ago. We know so many young women and young men like alison and adam who were in the early stages of a career that they believed would be to promising and fulfilling. The question now, who would do Something Like this . We know that the atf has gotten into the hunt for the suspect. Thats alcohol, tobacco and firearms. They are now involved in the hunt. Its eerie to see that shot that you showed us of the potential shooter. We know the creed of photographers in our business. You never stop rolling. These crews go out. Theyre not armed in any way and dont have any kind of security. The camera is really your only defense. Sometimes when youre out at live shots, you have a hard time paying attention to whats around you. Youre focused on the person youre interviewing or speaking to the cameras. Its hard to have a sense of surroundings even when its just innocent fans coming up and saying hi to you. When youre on Live Television its a sometimes very intense experience. Lets talk about photographers. They are the unsung heros of the news business. Ive been out live and idiots have pushed me. They are fearless people. You do not expect some bozo who is in front of the cam are or interrupting your live shot. What is so jarring is the fact that it is so clear that these three people never saw what was coming. They did not react until the shots rang out. Because it was 6 45 in the morning this water park is not open. Nobody was there. It does raise the question of whether they were targeted in some way. We dont know. But why would a gunman randomly be walking up and down the corridors of this lake . We dont know of a motive. Weve got to take a break. Well be back with much more in the newsroom. Were continuing to follow this breaking news out of the moneta, virginia, near roanoke, virginia,a tiny town. A reporter and her photographer doing a live shot this morning, shot dead live on the air. The woman they were interviewing also injured. Shes in surgery right now. The gunman still on the loose. Schools are in lockdown this morning. The Sheriffs Department is doing everything they can to track him down. Shooting happened at 6 45 eastern in the morning. The gunman is believed to be a man who fired six the station itself is not running video of the incident at this time. But i have the general manager on the phone right now, jeff marks. Are you there . Yes, i am. Thank you so much for talking with me. I cant even imagine how youre feeling at the moment. You send people into war zones and into dangerous situations, into riots and you worry that theyre going to get hurt. You send somebody out to do a story on tourism, and this how can you ever expect Something Like this to happen . You use all the words, we are devastated, senseless, all the catchwords, but they all apply. When did you become aware that this happened . At about 6 50. I was in my car and my news director called me and said, are you aware of what just happened on the air . Oh, my goodness. And what did you think had happened when he said that . Exactly what turned out to have happened. Your mind, being an experienced journalist, your mind immediately goes to the worst and then you hope its something less than that. Oh, my goodness. How did he explain the situation to you . She did. Simply what i said. When you work with somebody a long time, you dont need a lot of words. It was, where are you . I said, im just about at work. I happened to be in the neighborhood already. And she was close behind. So tell us from your perspective what exactly happened at 6 45 eastern. Say that again. Im sorry, theres so much going on in the newsroom. I totally understand. I missed your question. Can you tell me about the incident as you know it. Yes. They were doing a routine interview. You saw alison on camera with the person she was interviewing. You heard several shots fired. Alison screamed and started running away. By that time, we believe adam was already shot and alison was shot as she ran away. Thats what the video indicates. And what is indicated by one of our senior managers who is on the scene. So you believe that adam, the photographer, was shot first and then Alison Parker tried to escape the gunfire and she was hit . Thats what it appears. The police will recreate it. They need that information for whatever theyre going to be able to prosecute when they catch the i dont want to even characterize the person. But to us, it doesnt really matter. We have people Walking Around here in tears, a lot of hugs, we have a friend of our newsroom who is a pastor in here consoling people. Were trying to behave as journalists and cover the story while being just unbelievably griefstricken. Alisons fiance also works at your station and he just tweeted out a picture about his fiancee. And i hope we can put that up on the screen right now. What can you tell us about that relationship . Without wanting to invade their privacy a whole lot, i can just say that they were very much enamored with each other. They put smiles on each others faces. They were planning ahead. They were planning a future. And adam, the photographer who was killed, his fiancee was the morning producer. Was she in the control room when this went down . Yes. So she saw it happen . Yes. Oh, my gosh. Its hard to imagine, isnt it . Yes. It really is. And it was her last day here. She was moving on to a station in charlotte. This was going to be a day of celebration for her time here and wishing her good luck. And adam ward, her fiance, was going to follow her there, is that right . That was his plan. As far as the woman from the chamber of commerce that alison was interviewing, what can you tell us about her and possible injuries . I dont know anything. A source of the hospital said what you said, which was shes in surgery. You never like to pass on information like this. But the indication was positive about her. But we just dont know. Have any of your reporters or photographers been targeted in the past . Not that they were targeted this time because we dont know. I dont want to give that impression. Im just asking you every now and then, youll get a crazy email or something and well look into it. But its nothing of the nature that any of us could recall of a physical threat. I know youve talked to the Sheriffs Department. And theyre looking for this gunman. I just got something from pamela brown and evan perez. Authorities believe they have a name and a license plate number for an individual believed to be behind the shooting. Thats according to a Law Enforcement official. As you probably already know, agents from the atf and the fbi are on the scene and theyre participating in this investigation. What did the Sheriffs Department tell you about this shooter . Just that. They have reason to think they may know who it is. And beyond that, nothing thats shareable at this time. We know that it was 6 45 in the morning, right . And the water park probably was not open. So why was this man there . Youre describing it as a water park. I dont believe that maybe it is. But in any case, it was overlooking smith mount lake, a manmade lake that was flooded until 50 years ago and they were doing something about the 50th anniversary. Why someone was there, i dont know. One could assume that he we dont make a secret of where were going to be reporting from. We may start now. But he could see them on the air and know where they were and go be there with them. Right. And a final question for you because youre in for one very tough day. How will you handle this . Youre the general manager. I cant even imagine that. Im here trying to answer as many questions as i can, understand the grief of my employees, help them do their job at the same time and be responsive to both the Journalism Community and the community at large. Thats my role. The longer im on the phone with you, the less time i have to do that for everybody else. Ive got about 20 calls lined up. I understand. But i will do my job. Well, i appreciate your taking the time to talk with me, jeff marks. I appreciate it. Thank you so much. Thank you. Before i take a break, i want to put up a clear photo of that suspect. This is from the video, from the camera of the man who died. You can see the mans face. You can see the gun. You can see thats pointed the gun at something. And this is the man that sheriffs deputies and fbi agents are looking at right now in the tiny town of moneta. Schools are on lockdown. Police believe they have a name and they have a license plate. So hopefully theyre very close to tracking this man down. Ill be right back. Good morning. Im carol costello. Thank you so much for joining us. We do start with breaking news and tragic news at that. A tiny tv station near roanoke, virginia, a reporter and photographer doing a live interview at some sort of water park and both were shot to death live on the air. You see the pictures there. Alison parker who was just 24 years old, she was the reporter. Adam ward, the photographer, he was 47 years old. As adam ward was falling to the ground after being shot, his camera was still rolling. He caught an image of the gunman and i want to put that up for you right now. There he is. Police, sheriffs deputies and fbi agents looking for this man in moneta, virginia. They believe they have a name and a license plate number. Schools remain on lockdown in that area as authorities continue to search for this man. Now, as i said, this incident happened live on the air. It is very disturbing to watch. We are only going to show it once this hour. So if such things disturb you, please leave the room. But im warning you, its tough to watch. Here it is. Talk about why its important to get these Business Leaders involved. This is our community. And we want to come together. We want to share information that can help us grow and develop to provide a better experience. Were seeing tourism we want the people who come here to say you see it there. I want to show the picture again. If you can help authorities any way, it would be much appreciated if you recognize this man. Please call virginia authorities or call the fbi. Even your local chapter, theyll get you in touch with the right people. I just talked to the general manager, jeff marks. He made an announcement on the air to viewers in virginia who saw this go down. Lets listen to that. Breaking news this morning out of Franklin County, news thats affected our wdbj family very deeply. We were live this morning when shots were fired around 6 45. And our general manager and Vice President jeff marks is here to tell us more about what happened. Kim, it is my very, very sad duty to report that we have determined through the help of the police and our employees that alison and adam died this morning shortly after 6 45 when the shots rang out. We do not know the motive. We do not know who the suspect or who the killer is. We do know that the Franklin County sheriff, i just got off the phone with Franklin County sheriff overton. I just got off the phone before that with the state police. They are working very diligently to track down both the motive and the person responsible for this terrible crime against two fine journalists. That was jeff marks. I talked to him earlier, in fact just about 15 minutes ago. And he described more of what went down during that live shot at that water park. Apparently, shots rang out, at least eight shots, we think. Thats what we counted when we were watching the video. The shots hit the photographer first. Alison parker, the reporter, was running away. And thats when she was shot. The person they were interviewing who was from the chamber of commerce was also hit. Brian stelter early reported that she was in surgery and she had been hit in the back. I want to talk a little bit about the suspect search because that is ongoing. Alexandra field is following that part of the story. We know from authorities that they have the name of the person who they believe is the suspect. They have the license plate number of that person. But there are lockdowns in that community as they pursue this suspect. The feds are involved, the fbi and the atf are in the manhunt trying to find this person. No motive has been revealed. Thats why were seeing the repercussions of this reverberating even here in new york city. The nypd saying they have stepped up their security efforts at stations, news stations around the city, putting an extra Police Presence out front. That is the image that was captured by the photographer as he is fatally shot, we understand from the station manager that 27yearold photographer adam ward was hit first. He was rolling on the live shot. He drops his camera but it continues to record. It captures that face which could solve the mystery of who unloaded these deadly shots. Alison parker, you can then see her being hit. She is conducting an interview. She is looking at the woman, vicki gardner, who shes interviewi interviewing. They never see the suspect coming. We are now learning about how this was seen not just in this community but by the loved ones of these victims, both alison and adam. We know that alisons boyfriend was an anchor at the station. Heartbroken, the only way to describe how he is this morning i think perhaps if there could be a worse part of this is that adam ward was engaged to the morning producer. And morning producers are in the control room watching what goes out on air. So she saw her fiance get shot. You saw once that video cuts out, it goes to an anchor in the studio who is speechless, as everyone watching would have been, as we are as we continue to see this video. But the fiancee of the photographer who is shot is in the control room. There are a lot of screens in the control room. Youre talking to the crew in the field. She could have very well been in touch with adam throughout the morning and even at that time. And theyre literally watching live as this happens. You cannot imagine what the reaction must have been in that control room because, again, none of the three people on that scene seemed to see a shooter approaching. None of them react, you just hear the gunshots fire. And tweets are going out about the victims in this case. Chris was the boyfriend of Alison Parker. It was sort of a secret that they were dating in the newsroom. He is an anchor. Shes a reporter. Sometimes thats how it happens at these local l tv newsrooms. He said, alison and i were very much if love. We just moved in together. I am numb. Ill read what he wrote. He wrote, we were together almost nine months. It was the best nine months of our lives, we wanted to get married. Wed just celebrated her 24th birthday. She was the most radiant woman i ever met and for some reason, she loved me back. She loved her parents, her family and her brother. And then he said, i am comforted by everyone at the station, we are a family. She worked with adam every day. They were a team and i am heartbroken for his fiancee. So even in his moment, hes sharing those words to the other i guess they had just moved in together. And this was probably her first job in television, alison. Shes only 24 years old. Just graduated in 2012. These local stations, these are relatively small stations. You get your first job there, you work your way up. And this was a station with a strong news tradition. And viewers at home felt like they knew alison. You watch every morning, tune in for the morning news. You feel like you know these people. Thats why on facebook the emotions were seeing from viewers by the thousands are so personal. Were seeing a real outpouring in this community now from people who are hearing about the shooting and hearing about their deaths. On the phone right now, i have ryan edwards, from the School System in that area in moneta, virginia. Ryan, are you with me . I am, carol. Good morning. Good morning. Youre with the Bedford County schools. Tell me whats going on from your perspective. Carol, first of all, this is something that you rarely ever hear about, let alone in this area, but in this country. And what an unfortunate scena o scenario. We have a couple of schools in the southwestern portion of Bedford County that are very near where the shooting occurred. We immediately placed those schools on lockdown. Subsequently, we placed all 20 of our schools on lockdown and they remain in that status until this person or persons are apprehended. Were you watching television at the time . I was not watching television at that time. But i did have the opportunity to work with that reporter on one occasion and that cameraman on numerous occasions. And i just find this absolutely sickening. Its just hard to fathom. They were just doing this fun live shot about tourism and that part of virginia and theyre talking up the community. And then shots ring out . Yeah. That and i have seen some video which ive not been able to watch for much longer than five or six seconds because of what happened at the end. And this was a positive story about the tourism in a very popular area of our county, done by a very young, dedicated reporter with a wonderful attitude and a cameraman who was just the same, a dedicated individual. And this is just unspeakable from every angle it can be viewed. So how will you explain it to the kids in the School System because surely social media, its all over social media. Theyre going to watch it. Yeah. Theres no question social media right now we have just a plethora of our parents that are anxious, that are worried, that are scared. We will have an abundance of counselors on hand, especially in that southwestern area of our county. Our county encompasses 750 square miles. But in that area, we will certainly have an abundance of counselors this morning on hand to deal with children that are grieving and then of course we are doing everything that we can to get the word out to our parents that were, along with Law Enforcement, doing everything we can to protect their children while theyre in our buildings. Ryan edwards from the Bedford CountySchool System, thank you so much for being with me this morning. I appreciate it. Before i go to break, i want to put up that suspects picture one more time. We do continue to follow breaking news out of a tiny little town near roanoke, virginia, where something happened on their Morning Television station, their local station there. That reporter, Alison Parker and adam ward were doing a live shot when they were shot to death on the air. You can see the picture on your left. S that that is the gunman, that image captured by adam ward, the photographer, after going down. His camera was still rolling and he captured a picture of his alleged killer. Now, police are looking for this man. Schools in the area remain on lockdown while Police Continue their search. Earlier this morning, i talked with the general manager of the tv station, wdbj, jeff marks. Heres what he said about the incident. You send people into war zones and into dangerous situations, into riots and you worry that theyre going to get hurt. You send somebody out to do a story on tourism, and this how can you ever expect Something Like this to happen . You use all the words, we are devastated, senseless, all the catchwords, but they all apply. General manager jeff marks. He also told me hes had his people at the station looking at that video, studying that video. He says that the photographer was shot first. And as he went down and the gunshots continued, Alison Parker, the reporter, started to run away. And thats when she was shot and she fell. The woman that alison was interviewing was from the chamber of commerce. We understand she was hit by gunfire as well. Brian stelter, do we know if she remains in surgery ive asked the chamber of commerce. As of 45 minutes ago, she was still in surgery. Police are still looking for this gunman. A bit about Alison Parker, she was 24 years old. Kind of a newbie reporter. She had just graduated from college. We have a statement from her alma mater. Alison parker was a reporter and editor for the Student Newspaper at James Madison university where she graduated in december of 2012 with a bachelor of science in media arts and design. Thats according to bill wyatt, the director of communications at James Madison. We are saddened by the circumstances and news f of her death. Our thoughts go out to our friends, family and colleagues. Brian todd, are you live . Are you on the phone . You have new information. So tell us about it. Reporter yes, carol. I just listened to a radio interview that the Virginia Governor gave to a Radio Station. And the governor said police are in active pursuit of the suspect. They say that they hope to have him in custody soon. They are pruursuing him right n. They have idd the suspect. The governor did not give the suspects name but they have a picture of him and they believe he may be a disgruntled employee of that television station. That was a piece of news the governor just delivered a short time ago. We are en route to the area right now, picking up some news as we go. But governor mcauliffe seemed confident the suspect will be in custody soon, again saying authorities had a picture of him, that theyve idd him. The governor did not give the suspects name but he said that authorities believe he may, may be a disgruntled employee of that television station. Oh, my goodness. All right. Brian todd, ill let you get to your location so you can find out more information for us. Back to Alison Parker for just a minute, oddly enough, she was on cnn in 2014 on thanksgiving when the weather was its absolute worst. This is from her facebook page. And shes standing with her photographer, adam. They were probably a team. Very few employees are on staff in the morning. They were probably a team every single morning at that station working closely together. As you can see, they were great friends and they were both engaged but to other people. There they are. That looks like theyre inside a satellite truck together ready to head out to do a report. But as i said, oddly enough, in 2014, alison was actually on cnn. She talked to me and i just want to play a bit of that so you get to know her a little better. Look what it looks like in roanoke right now. This is Alison Parker from wdbj in roanoke. Its pretty. Reporter it is. Its such a beautiful sight. What youre seeing right now started out as heavy rain very early this morning. But clearly a different picture. That snow is just coming down. Carol . Everyone be careful. Please, Alison Parker, thank you so much. Alison parker from wdbj in roanoke. Shes just a young, enthusiastic presence. On the phone with me is deon gillery, he works at whsb. Do you currently work there . No, not currently. But i was there a couple of years ago when alison was in her senior youre at jmu. And she was your intern there, right . Yeah. Carol, you have to forgive me. Im still in shock about what happened this morning. I talked to some old coworkers about it and we were just flabbergasted. We work in the media and we get paid to talk for a living. And Something Like this this happens and were speechless. So its mindboggling that this would happen to such a great person. Tell us about her. Even when she was my intern, she was always so eager to learn. I taught her how to produce and she would go out on stories with me. She was just so enthusiastic. And she was doing what she loved. She got her first job after graduating she got a job in North Carolina and she worked there a little while. Then she was able to go to roanoke which was home for her. And so she was living her dream. And she was just so happy. I keep replaying this in my mind when i was talking to some old coworkers earlier that alison and i would send messages to each other on facebook and say, oh, weve got to catch up, weve got to catch up. And we just never did. Which happens in our business. But she was just such a great presence. She was such a great person, even in that clip you guys showed of her in the snow, you can even see her smiling in the snow. Thats just the kind of person alison was. And her family still lives in roanoke. So she was working in her hometown, you said . From my understanding, they still live in that area. I was fortunate enough to meet her parents. One day she brought them by the station. And they were just so proud of her and so happy that she was doing something and she was going into a field that she loved so much. Did you know she was engaged . I didnt know those specifics. But i did know she was dating. I didnt know those specifics, though. I, like you, deon, its just mindboggling. Because we are sent out as journalists to do things, and we always put ourselves in the line of danger. People believe what we do is glamorous and were celebrities and superstars and we get paid millions of dollars. But we put our lives in danger. And an unfortunate situation happens like this and she wasnt even covering breaking news at the time. She wasnt covering a shooting or a fire or something. She was covering tourism. So thats the last thing you would think would happen when shes covering a story like that, especially doing a live interview on tv, doing something that she loved so much. Deon, thank you so much for joining me this morning. I appreciate it. And i just want to put up the picture of the suspect one more time because we believe police are chasing him right now on i81. Alexandra field, can you fill us in on details on that . We know from the governor of virginia he spoke to a local Radio Station saying he does believe police do have this person in pursuit. They have idd him, they have a name, a license plate number, a picture. And according to the governor in this interview he gave, they believe he may have been a disgruntled former employee. Too soon to say for certain until they have their suspect in custody. But to this point, there has been no known motive. The first clue, the first break in this case coming from this image that was captured by the photographer, adam ward, as he was shot. The general manager of the station saying that he was the first to be shot. He was hit first. And then you see, of course, on that video that alison is shot. And the woman that she was interviewing. We know that the feds are involved in this. The fbi and the atf in hot pursuit of this suspect right now, carol. Thanks so much. Ive got to take a break. Well be back with much more in the newsroom. Go get help, boy. Go get help. Go get help right now if youre a cat, you ignore people. Its what you do. If you want to save fifteen percent or more on Car Insurance, you switch to geico. Its what you do. Go on kitty, kitty. Weve been telling you all morning about this terrible shooting that went down live on the air. A young reporter and photographer shot to death while doing a live shot at a large Recreation Area near roanoke, virginia. Brian todd is covering the investigation part of the story, along with alexandra field. But i want to go to brian todd right now because he has no information on the suspect. What can you tell us, brian . Reporter carol, Governor Terry mcauliffe in a continuing interview with a Radio Station says the suspect is on interstate 64 and he said hes confident the suspect will be in custody soon. Interstate 64, for people familiar with this area, runs east to west from the tidewater area of virginia all the way into West Virginia and beyond. That suspect would have had to have traveled fairly far north from where this incident took place to get to route 64. But governor mcauliffe says the suspect is believed to be on interstate 64 with Police Actively pursuing him. And the governor says he believes they will have the suspect in custody soon. Governor mcauliffe a few moments ago said they believe the suspect may be a disgruntled employee of that television station. Again, Governor Terry mcauliffe saying Police Pursuing this suspect, they believe he is now on interstate 64 which runs east to west from the tidewater area of virginia west into West Virginia and beyond. Thats kind of where were narrowing down the search for the suspect at this moment. Brian todd, i know youre on the way. But i do want to play governor mcauliffes remarks. He was live on wtop radio, a big news station in that part of the world. Lets listen to what the governor had to say. A 27yearold photographer, adam ward, what more are you hearing about this tragedy . I just got off the phone with the head of our state police as well as our secretary of public safety. I believe were in pursuit now of the suspect. We know who the suspect is. We believe its a disgruntled employee from the tv station is what we believe right now. But theres an active pursuit going on. We know the suspect and i assume in very short order, probably by the time we finish up this interview, the suspect will be in custody. What a tragedy. I know the area well. I was just there a week and a half ago. We just finished our Family Vacation standing literally right on that deck area at the Bridgewater Marina where this occurred. This young woman, 24 years old, photographer, 27, another woman shot, doing an interview talking about Economic Development and bringing businesses to the Smith Mountain lake region. But i went through background checks myself to get it. Weve got to in america, weve got to come together. There is too much gun violence in the United States of america. Have you, governor, at this point had all right. That was Governor Terry mcauliffe on wtop radio in washington, d. C. Saying that police are very close to making an arrest in this case. Justice correspondent pamela brown is on the phone with me right now to tell us more. Hi, pam. Reporter hi, pam. Were learning that federal authorities from the fbi, from the u. S. Marshals service as well as atf are involved in a massive manhunt right now for the person that they believe is responsible for this shooting, the shooting that killed 24yearold Alison Parker and 27yearold adam ward. We are told they believe they know the identity of the gunman. They have a license plate number and they are in hot pursuit of this person they believe is responsible for this. And its the Regional Task force, the Capitol Area Regional Fugitive Task force involved with this, pus marsha u. S. Ma actively looking for the gunman. We see a picture of the man we believe is the gunman right here. The camera the photographer was holding caught this picture of the gunman. We know that one of the guests that was being interviewed during this is actually in the hospital right now. The guest was shot in the back. Her name is vicki gardner. Shes still recovering in the hospital. Sadly the reporter and the photographer have died. As one official said, we are throwing all of our available assets into this investigation, a massive manhunt under way. Carol . And, again, the best news to come out of this, police do have this gunman in their sights. Has this police chase been going on a long time on interstate 64. Reporter sounds like this has just been going on within the last hour. I spoke to a Law Enforcement official about an hour ago. They said, we know the license plate number and we have the name. So presumably they were able to track who they believe is the suspect pretty quickly around that time. As you heard the governor said, we think well have this person in custody relatively soon. So there were a lot of developments within the last hour. This all unfolded at around 6 45 this morning right there near roanoke, virginia. Carol . Pamela brown reporting live from washington. Right now we know authorities are pursuing a suspect in the terrible shooting that happened this morning live on the air at a tiny tv station near roanoke, virginia. Police actually we dont know if police are on foot chasing this man down or in a car. Its taking place on i64. F but they say they have this man in their sights and theyre very close to making an arrest. This man allegedly opened fire at a Recreation Area near roanoke, virginia. A reporter and photographer were shooting a story there. Young reporter Alison Parker is her name. The photographers name is adam ward. They were doing an interview with someone from the chamber of commerce and this man allegedly opened fire killing the reporter and photographer and hitting the president of the chamber of commerce in the back. She is currently in surgery. Were hoping that shes okay. I talked with the television stations general manager from wdbj this morning. His name is jeff marks. Heres what he had to say about the shooting. You send people into war zones and into dangerous situations, into riots and you worry that theyre going to get hurt. You send somebody out to do a story on tourism, and this how can you ever expect Something Like this to happen . You use all the words, we are devastated, senseless, all the catchwords, but they all apply. He did tell me some details of the shooting because as you might expect, his employees back at the station are going through this video because i said it happened live on the air. Theyre looking at the tape portion of what went down. He said the photographer, adam, was shot first. He went down and as he did, his camera was still rolling and thats how that image of the alleged gunman was caught. As adam ward went down, the gunfire continued. Alison parker, the reporter, turned to run. You can hear her screaming in the video. But she was shot. I dont know exactly when the chamber what is the chamber of commerce womans name vicki gardner. Vicki gardner was shot but she apparently was shot in the back and shes in surgery right now. Police do have a suspect. Theyre following him in some way on i64 through southern virginia. I want to bring in Brian Stelter right now. You know how social media is. Theres a name circulating out there of the suspect and it is not that name. It is not that man thats circulating. His name is out there and hes totally innocent and i know that because Brian Stelter called him on the phone and talked with him. We reached out to him. He said, i know why youre calling and explained why it was not him. Were not going to share his name. There are other names out there as well. Maybe one of them will turn out to be right. Were trying to get to the bottom of it. Obviously television stations sometimes have disgruntled employees. Thats not a surprise but it doesnt necessarily mean they committed an act of murder today. Well continue to try to figure out who it was. Is something that this man whose name is circulating on the internet, he doesnt know what to do. Yeah. Hes not sure how to respond to it and scrub it off the web. Not possible to do. Over time, the truth will sort itself out. But its a cautionary note. Early reports are often wrong. This is no different. Be careful what you read on social media. Take it with a grain of salt. Come on. Were trying to get it right here as well. Police believe they have the name of the suspect. Were not reporting that. Its not been publicly released by police but they are acting through this investigation under the belief that they have the license plate number and the name. That they are pursuing the correct man in this case. This was so personal to the journalists involved, not just in this community but all around the country. Im hearing from Television Journalists who are shocked by this senseless murder, a double murder. Even the National Association of broadcasters has put out a statement expressing their condolences to the statement. In a moment like this, journalism is a large family. I have to take a break. Were following the breaking news out of a tv station near roanoke, virginia, where live on the air, a reporter and her photographer were shot to death. A woman she were interviewing from the chamber of commerce was also shot. She is currently in surgery. Now, the best thing here, police have a picture of the alleged gunman. This was taken by the photographer as he fell down after having been shot allegedly by this man. I want to bring in former atf executive Matthew Horace to talk about the investigation and what exactly authorities are doing now. What are the first steps, matthew . The first steps obviously are to identify the suspect. It sounds like that may have, in fact, happened. The next step will be to find that suspect, locate that suspect and safely bring that person or persons into custody. So the fbi has been called in, the atf has been called in. What exactly does the atf do in cases like this . Well, you and i discussed this just two weeks ago and just two weeks prior to that. We trace the firearms and help identify what type of firearm was used, if that person was prohibited or if they werent prohibited, how they acquired that firearm and then we help support the manhunt. We talk about that far too often, right, matthew . So you can see the gun in the gunmans hand. From what you can see, can you determine what kind of weapon this is . S. We know based on the number of rounds that were fired that it was a semiautomatic pistol. It wasnt a revolver. It was a gun that held more than six rounds and it was fired in rapid succession. Because we watched the video and we listened to the number of gunshots and we believe at least eight gunshots fired. Is that what you determined . Thats what i determined. Based on that fact, we know its not a revolver that holds just six rounds of ammunition. This was a semiautomatic pistol that was used in this crime. So as you were watching this video, matthew, how do you think the shooting went down . Well, clearly it was planned, it was calculated. It was cold. It was premeditated. It wasnt a random act. I think the police were able to rule out an act of domestic terrorism very quickly. They ran down their leads and determined if the suspect was someone that used to work at the station. It appears as though we may have a suspect in our sights. It took place at a large Recreation Area near roanoke, virginia. And it was 6 45 in the morning, right . So the Recreation Area was probably not busy. Parts of it were probably closed. But there were probably a lot of video cameras all around that park and that will prove helpful to authorities as well. Yeah, im quite sure that cctv camera systems were used to help identify the suspect, the suspects vehicle, when the suspect arrived, how the suspect left and that ultimately is going to be a piece that helps us solve this crime. One of the most rewarding parts of this job is after you help a customer, seeing a smile on their face. Together, were building a better california. Were continuing to follow the breaking news out of roanoke, virginia, at a tv station there. A reporter and photographer shot dead on the air during a live shot at a large Recreation Area. They were talking to a woman from the chamber of commerce who was also shot in the back. That woman survived the shooting. She was in surgery about an hour ago. We dont know currently what her condition is. You saw a glimpse of the alleged gunman here. This shot taken by the photographer as he fell to the ground. His camera capturing this image. The camera still rolling as adam ward essentially died. Adam ward was just 27 years old. He was engaged to be married. He was going to leave the station, he and his future wife were going to start a new life in a bigger place. 24yearold Alison Parker was also engaged to one of the anchors at that station, wdbj. She was also looking forward to a new life, a happy life. There she is with her fiance who tweeted this earlier. He said, we didnt share this publicly but Alison Parker and i were very much in love. We just moved in together. I am numb. Just such a sad story. Early this morning i talked with the general manager of the station, jeff marks. Heres a bit of that interview. They were very much enamored with each other. They put smiles on each others faces. They were planning ahead. They were planning a future. Such a sad story. I want to bring in Brian Stelter right now. Perhaps the most agonizing angle of this story, the photographer, adam ward, was engaged to the morning producer. It was her last day. Her last day. She was going on to a bigger margaret. She was in the control room, probably communicating with adam ward because she sets up the live shots between the station and the people in the field. And she saw this go down. At 6 45. At first it wasnt clear just how bad it was. You see clearly they were startled, clearly something awful happened. Gunshots rang out. We didnt know immediately anybody had died or that anybody had been wounded. The camera cut away to the anchor. We dont know what was seen in the control room afterwards. Adams shot could have kept on the air for a while in the control room for the producers to see. And i fear and i hope they didnt see anything. But we dont know what they saw. Two hours later, we found out these people had died. Thinking about those two hours in between as well. Describe what went down. The general manager described in part you see the reporter here, Alison Parker, interviewing the woman from the chamber of commerce. Then you hear at least eight gunshots ring out. According to the general manager, the photographer, adam ward, was shot first. He fell to the ground. At that point, Alison Parker started to run away. And you can hear her screaming in that video trying to escape the gunfire but she was also hit and she died at the scene. Thats right. Might be worth closing this hour by noting that a group of journalists keeps count of journalists deaths all around the world. So far this year, 39 journalists have died all around the world. In the United States, only a handf handful, i believe five journalists have been killed in this country in the last 20 years. The most recent was in 2007. An editor shot dead on a street in oakland. Now, unfortunately, two names being added to that list. We cover in war zones, never on a feature assignment in virginia. And police have a suspect in mind, a license plate. They have located the suspect. That does it for me. Im carol costello. Thank you so much for joining me. At this hour with berman bolduan coming your way next. We continue to follow the breaking news at this very hour. Hello, everyone. Im kate bolduan. Police in virginia, they are hunting for a gunman, a gunman who shot and killed a local tv reporter and photographer while they were broadcasting live on the air. Authorities say they do know who he is and the Virginia Governor said that he hopes to have the man in custody very soon. Stunned viewers
