People. Were happy this animal this monster will never see the light of day. But one question remains, will james holmes live or die . Plus a miraculous story of survival. There was a light and then it was all trees and then it was all fire. The teen who lived through a fiery plane crash in the wilderness tells cnn how she not only lived but navigated her way back to civilization. Scared to be alone in the middle of absolutely nowhere. Lets talk live in the cnn newsroom. And good morning. Im carol costello. Thank you so much for joining me. New this morning, we have learned the identity of another one of those four u. S. Marines killed in yesterdays shooting ram pain. His name is skip wells. Hes from suburban atlanta. According to friends of his family he graduated from High School Just three years ago. Also identified this morning, Gunnery Sergeant thomas sullivan. He survived two tours of duty in iraq but he was killed on u. S. Soil when that gunman sprayed bullets into two military facilities in chattanooga. The First Military recruiting center inside a suburban shopping mall. Despite the shattered windows, no one here died but a much different story seven miles away on the killers final stop. All four fatalities at the naval and marine center. The killer also wounded a Police Officer in the shootout that would leave him dead. The gunman Mohammed Yusuf abdul aziz was 24 years old and a tennessee grad he was not on any american databases for suspected terrorists. A drunk driving charge just a few months ago was his lone brush with the law. So was this an act of a criminal . Or a domestic terrorist . Weve not determined whether it was an act of terrorism or whether it was a criminal act. Were looking at every possible avenue whether it was terrorism, whether it was domestic international, or a simple criminal act. Feds are not taking any chances, ratcheting up security at some facilities. This is in the heart of times square. Police are standing guard. Emergency response vehicles at the ready. Also this morning the military community and the city of chattanooga is grieving of course. The big question, how four marines who served their nation with distinction could have been gunned down on american soil. Lets bring in alexandra field. You have new details on one of the victims. These four marines killed two of them publicly identified. Skill. S was among those killed. A 2012 High School Graduate in marietta graduate. He was also a student at Georgia Southern university studying history. And family and friends are also telling cnn he had recently returned from a trip to disney world with his mother. Carol, we also know about another marine killed Gunnery Sergeant thomas sullivan. He reportedly did two tours of duty in iraq. He reportedly earned a purple heart. He is being mourned and grieved by friends and family in massachusetts. Hes a native of springfield. The loss hitting that city very hard this morning. They have lowered a flag to halfstaff in his honor. Communications director for that city says the family is just trying to come to terms with all of this but we are seeing some of the outpouring of their emotions this morning. Loved ones posting on a Facebook Page this about tommy. They say he was our hero and he will never be forgotten. Please keep his family and friends in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you, tommy, for protecting us. I know thats a sentiment so many people are sharing this morning. Just awful. Alexandra field, thank you so much. All right. We have to focus on the suspect now in an attempt to understand this. I dont know if well ever understand it but lets try this morning together. Cnns Victor Blackwell is in chattanooga with more details. Good morning, victor. Reporter good morning to you. As we are trying to understand this and learn about Mohammed Abdulazeez so are investigators and this is their first introduction. From what were told from Law Enforcement sources that abdulazeez, his name was not in any u. S. Database of suspected terrorists but i will say this what were hearing from the fbi is that although it has not been determined if this was domestic terror or International Terror or just a criminal act, they are approaching this as a terror investigation. But when you put those words together the name abdulazeez and a terror in a sentence and you go to ask questions of friends and former classmates they see no correlation. They describe someone who was smart and humorous. There was a former wrestling coach who said abdulazeez was a devout muslim but not overly religious. Take on one hand you have these blog posts, two of them on july 13th in which he talks about how seriously he takes his faith. But then in april you have a dui arrest and, you know, the most devout muslims dont consume alcohol. We know by graphiciographically he was worn in kuwait was a jordanian citizen and recently u. S. Naturalized naturalized u. S. Citizen and recently returned to the middle east. Investigators, of course and friends and former coaches are looking to that time hopefully to find out if there is a motive connected to that travel. His demeanor, it was absolutely nothing on him that would show me that he was upset about something, you know, and i know he moved out of the country about a year or two ago. I went back home and he stayed overseas and i asked his dad about where is mohammad . He said he moved back home. I saw him a couple times on a visit now. Im not one to speculate, but what happens overseas in a certain different environment, i dont know. I mean he seemed like the allamerican kid. I mean he never loud never boisterous never got out of line. Hard worker, seemed to enjoy the training and got along with everybody. Reporter and look at this yearbook caption from 2008. This is from high school in which he writes my name causes National Security alerts. What does yours do . Probably an attempt at humor then but, of course in context of what happened here yesterday not so funny now. I can tell you that federal officials, the atf, the fbi searched, raided his home in the hickson community. They even took in dogs of course having to be aware of possibly booby traps in the home. Of course searching for evidence pointing to a motive in this situation. Carol . So we see a woman in handcuffs. Do you know who that woman is victor . Well the fbi, the special agent in charge out here says although we see that woman in handcuffs and they have not released her name or identity or connection, that when they go for these searches they try to clear out the house and she was part of the clearing out of the house but they tell us no one else was taken into custody in connection with the attack that happened here in chattanooga. And just to be clear, this was the family home. Reporter yes. It was the home there where he lived as part of this wide ranging search for evidence. All right, Victor Blackwell reporting live from chattanooga. So many unanswered questions. The most glaring, why . What . The gunmen went from what kids describe as an allamerican kid to someone they didnt know. The first picture you see of Mohammed Abdul aziz from high school. The second is from college. Now the last one is a mug shot taken after abdul azizazeez was arrested for owi. With me is matthew fogg and john than gilliam. Not that the pictures necessarily tell us anything jonathan but as you look at those pictures do you get anything out of them at all . Well i do but im not looking at it as just somebody who was a neighbor or a normal citizen. Having the training and expertise i have what im looking at is all these things theyre pointing out that, you know he didnt pop on the radar, that he was kind of an allamerican kid. He was quiet, he was unassuming he learned to fight, and that quote that was in his yearbook all those things to me are pointing out suspicion. They dont to other people but even his yearbook post when he was 18 years old and this was the post. I just want to read it for our viewers. He says my name causes National Security alerts. What does yours do . And there it is. A fellow student said they took it as a joke. It could be a joke. Could have just been a joke but its very telling now, and if you look at the pattern of who this person was, unassuming if im going to teach you to be an operative inside another country, im going to teach you, you need to be unassuming dont go out there and be boisterous. Be the allamerican. Thats the ultimate operative. And then go out and, you know, prepare yourself physically. Learn to fight because hes learning to defend himself or go into the hi jad. Jihad. Hes not going to live recklessly. This is a religious thing. This kid was on his way to stardom as far as being a complete person or he was preparing himself for the ultimate jihad and not wasting his life in his eyes. One of those two things. Matthew, do you agree . Somewhat but when you really talk about someone that is under the radar, never been arrested allamerican kid, for Law Enforcement thats a real dilemma because again you just dont know when it comes down. I have tracked down a lot of folks and looked at a lot of profiles. With the profile this guy had, the best security operation would have been had those places been more secure than they were when this guy came. Narrator onto the scene. I heard somebody say finding a needle amongst needles. Its very difficult and its one of those things that we just as americans we have to understand with security we got to understand we dont know who might be the person that might decide that they want to go on this route. And one of the things thats making it difficult for investigators, jonathan as you well know is theres no big social media footprint, at least right now they havent discovered one. Theres a few blog posts, right . And it mentions religion, but theyre not the sort of things that make you go, oshsh, this guy could be a terrorist. Thats the thing we have to start wrapping our mind around. Were not looking at drug dealers that were born and raised on a certain corner and theyre easily found. You go into the right neighborhood you see them dealing drugs, you know the way the system works. Were dealing with covert operations that could last a lifetime. Thats the way these operators want to work. This you know i could be completely wrong here but we have to still about this individual but im not wrong at all, im 100 correct when im saying that this is ultimately what they want. People that live and exist in a community that are unnoticed until the day they attack. Thats really the ultimate smart weapon. Matthew . Yeah. Just to follow up on that, the concern that we have its almost like stop and frisk. Do we just stop people randomly or do we know . Again, when you have somebody with a clean record like that weve got to just understand in the Law Enforcement world that okay there are folks out there that start turning their ideologies and change but we cannot simply just target people when we dont have anything on them. Weve got to be vigilant and watch. Im not saying target people. What im saying is there has to be a definite shift in the way that we start looking at people. We have to start looking at this from a tactical perspective and not a what is right and what is friendly with people. Theyre at war. Theyre coming to attack us and we have to assume they could be anywhere and thats not judging. That is the honest truth where the enemy lies now. But we look at a guy like dylann what dylann just did in south carolina. There wasnt nothing actually dylann probably had more things on his radar we should have looked at but the bottom line is i dont see when you have somebody as clean as this its very difficult, its not to say it cant be done but we have to be more vigilant as Law Enforcement people. Did he have a weapon on him. He was in a vehicle. It was never searched and this guy finally somehow got on the scene and was able to do what he did. Okay. Ill have to leave it there. Thanks to both of you for your insight. I appreciate it. Matthew fogg jonathan gilliam. Still to come hear from the teenager who walked away from that fiery plane crash next. We are now hearing from the teenage girl who survived a fiery plane crash in the remote mountains of washington state. 16yearold Autumn Veatch is now talking about that crash and her remarkable twoday journey to safety. Here is cnns sara sidner. Reporter 16yearold Autumn Veatch was excited when her grandparents offered her a chance to be flown home from a private plane instead of driven home but that excitement turned into sheer terror when the plane began to have problems. We almost crashed the first time that like we went through some clouds but he took like a really sharp turn and was like, whew. That was a close one. Reporter it happened again and this time the plane crashed in the remote wilderness. Im still like panicking, freaking out, and then they both started freaking out kind of yelling like turn the gps back on and i cant see anything thats going on. So started to go up and then it was all white and then it was all trees and then it was all fire. Reporter she got out and tried to save her step grandparents. They were both screaming, and i was there was no way i could get to grandma because she was on the far side. If i got grandpa out first, maybe she would come out, but i was trying to pull him out and i just couldnt do it. Like there was a lot of fire. Reporter sobbing, she eventually realized shed die too, if she stayed put. You must have been so incredibly stressed out, scared sad. Scared to be alone in the middle of absolutely nowhere. I didnt even know where i was at all. I dont know what city it was or anything. Reporter she began walking, her hand face and hair burned. Her body bruised. I dont know anything about outdoor survival. Reporter but she made it after two nights and three days in the woods. She credits a tip from survival shows her dad watches, follow the water and live. Were hearing from a witness to the gunmans first target. I saw him raise his gun and then i saw him take one shot and then i just saw him take consistent shots after that because there was a pause in between. He took a shot and then it was a pause for about two seconds and then it was just shot shot shot shot shot. So what are investigators most focused on . What led to these attacks . Evan perez is cnns justice correspondent. Hes been delving into that. What have you found out, evan . Good morning, carol. The question today still remains why, why did this shooter carry out this rampage yesterday . We know that fbi investigators so far have not found any links between him and any foreign terrorist organizations. As you know weve been talking a lot this summer about threats from isis. So far they havent found any kind of links between this shooter and any of those threats that have been made. We know that the Justice Department is treating this as a National Security investigation, however, and the fbi says theyre treating it as a terrorism investigation until its proven otherwise. Here is how ed reinhold the investigation agent in charge who is leading this investigation, here is how he puts it. We are checking every possible place that he could reside or could have resided, visited, where hes shopped, where he went to school who his friends were, feif he worked eded out at a gym, every possible lead. We have information hes been in various locations and we will check each and every one of those. Carol, this investigation extends overseas as well. The government of kuwait this morning has put out a statement saying that yes, indeed he was born there. He was a jordanian citizen and he became a u. S. Naturalized citizen. He did visit duekuwait in may of 2010 and a couple months later he crossed over to jordan where he had citizenship. We know u. S. Investigators are talking to the jordanian intelligence jordanian authorities to figure out who he might have been associating with there. His friend in an interview with drew griffin last night said that he was there to teach, and so now the fbi wants to know who else was he meeting with there . Did that change anything . Did that lead to what happened yesterday . So far they do not know. And as far as social media is concerned, evan is there anything really investigators have been able to track down . Theres one tantalizing thing which was a blog that was found yesterday. The fbi has not verified yet that it is his blog but it does have his name and it does track back to an email address that appears to be his, and in this blog, carol, a couple blog posts that were posted a few days ago, this person ruminates about what it means to be a muslim. He talks about jihad, and he uses terms that weve come to see a lot in people who believe in a fundamentalist strain of islam. So that is something the fbi is looking at as well because they dont know again, they know he was religious. They dont know that there was Something Else that was going on there. All right. Evan perez reporting live for us this morning. Thank you. I want to take you to chattanooga, tennessee. Police chief Fred Fletcher is joining me now. Good morning, sir. Good morning, thank you for having me. Thank you for being with me. Im sure youre busy today. Can you tell me about the Police Officer that was wounded yesterday . I can tell but this particular hero. He is doing very well consider the brutal assault he experienced. He and his family are recovering in erlanger hospital in chattanooga. Hes receiving the best care possible. Hes received an outpouring of support from our department our community, and as you know around the country. Can you tell me what he encountered as he arrived on the scene . Absolutely. He encountered an absolutely brutal and vicious gunman who was determined to kill people because of the uniforms they wore and he put himself in harms way between harm and bullets and our community and he most certainly saved lives in our community. He was shot. Can you tell me about his injury . Yes. He was shot at least one time in the lower leg and again hes receiving fantastic care fantastic support from his family and our broader family within the department and the community, and we absolutely believe he will recover and continue to serve our community in the courageous way he did yesterday. Did he Exchange Gunfire with the gunman . A number of officers he can changed gunfire with the gunman and like i said i believe that those actions absolutely absolutely prevented this vicious gunman from harming more people in our community. Because this all unfolded at the recruiting center in a suburban strip mall. Do you know how many shots the gunman fired . We dont. There were a lot fired. I think you can see it right behind me maam. There were a number of shots fired. We have multiple teams of investigators, detectives and evidence recovery teams out here to try to find out exactly that fact to make sure the investigation is a robust and thorough and compelling as possible. Was it just a miracle that nobody inside that recruiting center was killed . It is absolutely a miracle because this gunman was very obviously intent on harming members of our Armed Service and our local police department. Chief fletcher thank you so much for joining me this morning. I appreciate it. Thank you very much. Youre welcome. As weve said weve been down this road before. A young man who seemingly has it all causes a tragedy thats really hard to understand. With me now cnn contributor and coauthor of isis inside the army of terror is michael weiss. Welcome and thank you for being here. In a certain way this case reminds me of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Popular guy, good looking, no signs he was involved in anything nefarious and then his friends say, what this guy . Arrested for a dui so obviously he had partaken of things that are considered as did Dzhokhar Tsarnaev marijuana. In a sense this is almost out of central casting. Theres been a lot of mythology about what creates terrorism. It comes from poverty. No actually a lot of these guy come from fairly well off middle class backgrounds. The jihadi john as we used to call him or the guy that lopped off the heads of the american hostages now part of isis, his father was a petty bourgeois taxi driver in london. I think he had a degree in engineering, much like this man here. Look who did this or who is responsible, this is the question everyone is asking. Is this al qaeda, is this isis . He traveled to the middle east. What does this mean . The broader point is the atmospherics that have been created in the last two or three years, particularly with the founding of the socalled caliphate and the absolute abundance of jihadi information and propaganda available has made it very conducive for sort of lone wolf or selfradicalized agents such as this guy to simply decide you know what . Im going to pick up a couple assault rifles and go after indeed military targets. Gee doesnt necessarily have to communicate directly with anyone. No. And this is what isis wants. This is what al qaeda wants. They want to create a kind of Ripple Effect or an epiphenomenal effect of having jihadists just sort of come into it themselves without having to make contacts or develop their own network or necessarily even pledge allegiance to one of the two organizations. There are a couple clues, at least they seem like theyre clues right now. When he was in high school abdulazeez he wrote in his yearbook my name tosses National Security alerts. What does yours do . He did this when he was 18 years old and his friends say it was just a joke because he was a happygolucky guy in high school very popular. The other kind of clue came years later in a blog of islamic parables that authorities suspect were written by abdulazeez. He wrote, as muslims, we have a certain understanding of islam and keep a tunnel vision of what we think islam is and we dont have appreciation for other points of view and accept the fact we may be missing some important parts of the religion. What do you make of that . Well i mean that can go one of two ways. I could well see a moderate imam saying the same thing and referring to sort of the variety and the multiplicity of islam and the various interpretations or it could mean the more purist fundamentalist strain. In other words, we take a very sort of small catholic ac connecticut lick a catholic approach to the faith. A lot of guys we interviewed for the book who ended up going off to join isis for instance began life as not even pious muslims. They didnt go to mosque didnt celebrate the holy days. They told us when they joined isis, it was as if the scales had fallen from their eyes. Everything they thought they knew about islam was a myth, it was false, and it was the clerics of isis who showed them the true path. Obviously the latter interpretation is more closely adhering to what this character says. Thank you for your insight. We appreciate it. Still cometo come. A guilty verdict for the colorado theater shooter. Reporter lots of tears, lots of hugs after that verdict was read here at the arapaho county courthouse but this trial isnt over yet and i will explain what happens next plus more reaction from victims family members when we come back. Were getting more information in on some of the marines who were gunned down in chattanooga, tennessee. One of them skip wells, 21 years old. He was a marine. He also attended Georgia Southern. He was a university student. Hes from marietta, georgia, and with me now on the phone, a friend of his, a longtime friend whose game is garrett reed. Okay and thank you for talking with me this morning. Not a problem at all. Tell me about skip. I mean a lot. He was a real genuine guy. He had a real caring spirit. Funny dude. He could i know throughall high school and i cant remember all the way back to Elementary School but i know in high school man, during band ba that boy had me cracking up. Just a real nice guy. You have known him since fourth grade, right . Yeah. Since fourth grade. Wow. What was your reaction when you heard about this . Disbelief, you know. Kind of surreal. You know you never you hear about this kind of stuff on the news all the time and you never think about it could happen to one of your friends. Of all people him. Hes like one of the nicest guys you ever meet and you never expect Something Like this to happen to somebody like that. But i heard about it, you know and just didnt want to believe it. I still kind of dont, but i mean, you know its just its hard, you know but thats about it. You know you cant really say anything else about it. Do you know why he wanted to be a marine . He loved this country. His mama served in the military. I believe she was a marine also. I figured he just wanted to follow in her footsteps. He was inr rotc in high school. He loved that. Maybe that was a call he had. His family had a long history of military service. I know thats probably why he ended up doing it. The way this happened the way he was killed allegedly by mr. Abdulazeez and nobody can understand why this guy did that as the details come in about how this went down what goes through your mind . Why somebody would take innocent lives for no reason regardless of whatever his motive is, regardless if it was some kind of religious belief or some sort or whatever the case may be. Taking a life you dont have a heart when you do Something Like that. You may think its just another body but not. The Ripple Effect is way farther than just a body. The dude has got friends, family that cares about him, so on and so forth. People dont think about that kind of stuff when they do stuff like this. It doesnt compute in their mind. Theres nothing to say about people like that. You know those kind of people ultimately they do this kind of crap for the exact reason that they want to be known for something. They have nothing else going in their life or whatever the case may be they want to get known for it and thats what happens. This kind of stuff happens and they get blasted on the media, Everybody Knows their name and they go down in history for killing somebody when they should just be completely scarlet lettered and never spoken of again. Thats how i feel. These kind of people dont deserve any kind of recognition. I appreciate your honesty. Have you talked with the family . I havent been able to. As you can imagine, his mother, you know is probably beyond distraught. I havent been able to get ahold of her. I have known her ever since i have known him. Shes like another mother to me. She was my bus driver for a little while when i was growing up in middle school but i havent been able to get in contact with her. I probably wont for a while considering. But, no i havent been able to get in contact with anybody in his family. Thats the value of performance. Northrop grumman. People who knew the gunman in chattanooga, Mohammad Youssuf abdulazeez described him as religious but not a radical muslim. Youre looking at new pictures of the mosque he attended in chattanooga. Its closed today. A sign out front says all activities including prayers, have been canceled following the tragedy. Dean abdullah joins me now with more host of sirius xms the dean observeeidallah show. We were surprised they shut the mosque down on such an interesting day. On facebook some are supportive of that and others saying you shouldnt do that. Just have your celebration and just pray for the families of the marines who were lost because the leader of the mosque we are mourning for the four marines who were lost and i can tell you, muslims across america were saying its a despicable act, a horrible act and our prayers are with the four families whose lives were taken by this horrible gunman. Some are saying by doing this youre associating yourself with this crazy gunman and saying maybe it is connected to us as muslims. I would think you come together to pray for the four marines and you have the spirit of community and youre together and then i thought, well maybe they canceled prayers for safetys sake. You know there have been emails by certain muslimamerican organizations to other Muslim Leaders in our community saying you should be on guard, you should be worried if someone doesnt look like theyre right and theyre at your event. Maybe it could be something happening that could be a factor but i dont think so. When i read in the New York Times the leader of that mosque and were doing it out of respect for the marines families. We want to make it clear we respect them were grieving with them and we didnt think having our celebration on that day would be the right thing to do. I know you have been working very hard to get the word out about good muslims. Sure. And then Something Like this happens again. So does your work begin anew. The work never ends. We could do all the work we can in our community and people are doing it all different facets from young muslims raised about 70,000 to rebuild black churches that you were burned down in the last few weeks over the south approximate i am doing a muslim comedy festival next week the first unone ever. This kind of action defines us more than any of the good things were doing. Thats part of the struggle and to put this in context. This is a horrible act. In america gun violence is hor riff k and we should be if theres ever a time to have an honest discussion about access to guns, if youre worried about lone wolf trafterrorists, lets make it harder for them. Its one more step for police or Law Enforcement to catch the person. Lets have a global conversation. Not just about muslims lets talk about gun violence as well. A tall order, dean. Stay with me on the phone is the president of the Islamic Society of chattanooga. Welcome, sir. Thank you very much. Dean on dal la is we me and we were wondering why they decided to close the mosque for prayers today. We did not close the mosque but we canceled the Morning Service because this is like christmas. Its a festival usually after ramadan and its a break of the fast. So basically our hearts our minds did not feel like festival, you know activities and based on that we feel this is a very grave tragedy that were trying to deal with as one community, as chattanoogians as americans, and to do this is just not the right thing it do. We have our normal prayer today which every friday we do that at 2 00. We will be there and we will have interfaith some of the pastors and other people that come in and the mosque is open for everybody, but the festival part in the morning, thats the one that was canceled. Dean wants to ask you a question. This is dean observe dal la. Some people in the community have been very supportive of what you were doing. Others are saying on some level youre associating yourself more with this guy. What would you say to those people in our community that say you shouldnt have canceled celebration. You should do it show what we are as muslims and say were not going to change our nate because of of this radical person who did something. Nobody came to me and told me that we should not have canceled. Thats the first time i hear about it. I see on facebook and social media. It goes back and forth. Many people supportive but others are saying why. Im just asking you that. Why what . Why cancel the event . Why not still have it and honor the marines in that . And continue to have the ied celebration. We will honor the marines today. We will have the normal prayer and at the vigil for the entire chattanooga with the mayor being there, all the people of faith, Christians Jews us we are all going to be as a community there every muslim in this city was told where this is going to be and we will be a lot of us there this evening at the church downtown. So we are doing that and, you know we grieve for the families of our loved marines and we condemn this act very strongly just like any other american. We dont think of ourselves as muslims first. We think of ourselves as americans who happen to be muslims. Just like if you are an american happen to be christian. We are not apart from the community. For example, i lived here for 41 years. I know every Little Corner of every street. This is my town. This is my people. Everybody knows my face. I know everybody in this town. Its a small city of 300, 400, and the same thing with most of our Community Members have been here for decades. The person that did this his father works for the city of chattanooga in the Storm Water Department and hes a person that normal person like any other american. This is a shocking thing. Yes. Everybody is in disbelief. Its just were just as in the dark as anybody else. Did you know this young man . This young man, my understanding that about the time we opened the Islamic Center about two years ago, he had moved overseas to live with relatives, and recently my understanding he has come back. Hes an engineer and went to nashville and hes working somewhere with a company in nashville. Apparently he has come because of ramadan to visit his family that lives here. We dont know much about the man. I personally dont have much contact with him, and thats really what it is. Bassam issa thank you for joining me. Dean thank you. I appreciate it. Thank you so much.
