Monumental quickness, it really didnt. No it didnt. It didnt. We have been wrestling this for better than 20 years. So when you look around you here and you see there are thousands of people here. Did you expect this many people to come out . I did not expect this many people to come out today. Im just wondering who is working in the state of South Carolina today. Its a holiday today. Evidently it is a great day in South Carolina. Its a new day in South Carolina. We need to leave here today when this flag comes down off of the dome saying its a new day in South Carolina. Why is it new . Its new because something that we have wrestled for for over 20 years, we can see that came into existence now. Listen, in 1962 i was 1 year old, and this flag really it was said that the flag would go up for the centennial. It would remain up for almost a year. Say this one more time. 1961. 1962. 62. I was 1 year old. The agreement was for this flag to go up on the dome for the centennial. And it never came down. And it never came down. And there are people who believe that this flag has been here since the civil war. No. No. 1962. And it went up for the centennial. Thats right. And the agreement was then that it would stay up for the rest of that year and come down and it never came down until 2000 when it was taken down off the dome and then placed on this pole. And we fought then. What should have happened then it should have went to where its going to today. It should have went to the museum then but weve been fighting for 15 years, and the reason i say today is a new day in South Carolina after this flag comes down the boycotts weve had over the last 15 years, we have lost money in the state of South Carolina. We will be able to invite those people to come back to South Carolina have your events here in South Carolina. There are many businesses who wont come here. There are athletes who wont come here. I think the williams sisters wont play here because of that. Right. You believe that that will open up and as the governor said and we have to be honest the governor wasnt always on this side. No she wasnt. But now she is. We got elected the same time. Were classmates. 2004 nikki haley and i got elected as representatives and then shelected as a governor. She stepped forward and i applaud the governor. I stood with her when she announced that we would take the flag down. I stood with her on yesterday when she signed the bill because weve been fighting for this for years, and you could see it by the vote. We stayed up until the wee hours of the morning on thursday and we took the vote. The vote was 9420. That tells you that, hey, there were people there that know that the flag needs to come down. And theres one flag behind us that a gentleman is waving as the cloud begins to roar. Its a new day its a new day and that is the American Flag that everyone agrees if any flag is going to stand here and, okay, Governor Haley has come out. I believe shes wearing yellow. We have a band of legislators and their spouses and everybody youre here talking to us but otherwise you would be up on those steps. My spouse is up there on the steps with them. We have a large group thats here. Its 170 ever us minus one, senator Clementa Pinckney but we mourn his death and the other eight. And i want to bring in Bakari Sellers now. A friend of Clementa Pinckney. Hes very excited. He should be very excited. You have to understand weve been through so much. Its the heroes and cheeros we talk about. Its the Jimmie Lee Jackson and medgar evers and emmett till and today you have to add Clementa Pinckney to the list and today we have the flag coming down. And this flag this is that is the banner that we all where are you from . Greenwood, South Carolina. This gentleman joins us. Youre from where . Greenwood, South Carolina. Do you believe this is the only flag that should be this is the flag that unites us and thats the flag thats coming down that has, unfortunately, drieded a lot of people. Thats right. Thats right. The American Flag. Have respect for the people that honor that as their heritage but its been used in other ways. Its been a symbolic of a lot of things that are negative and a lot of things that are part of the dark part of our countrys history. When you im leaning close to you because i want the microphone to pick you up. Why did you come today . I have been here several days sir. Why . To show support for the people here with me and i think its time after 54 years that that flag comes down. When you look around you see the lawmakers on the steps the thousands of people gathered here. What do you think . Proud, proud, because this is a transitional moment in the history of South Carolina here today. Thats right. Were happy to hear you say that and we thank you for coming two hours all the way from greenwood, South Carolina. Been here many days. Thank you so much. There you go. Thats the sentiment of whats happening here. Its a new day in South Carolina as i said. We just hope that after this flag comes down we can unite as the gentleman said. Im going to move your microphone up but keep talking. We need to come together. We need to unite in South Carolina. We saw what happened. Those nine persons at a bible study at Mother Emanuel Ame Church lost their lives and we saw what this young man had on his facebook page. The ceremony is under way and i want to lets just pause for a moment and take a look. [ cheers and applause ] [ cheers and applause ] ey goodbye na na na na na na na na hey hey hey goodbye usa usa usa you know i hate to break in here here bakari representative anderson van jones, its gone. Yes, it is. Its gone. It is gone. What a new day, yes. I think sometimes people have a hard time understanding why were so joyous but i mean that flag has divided this state, this country for so long. For me its tears of joy. People are i dont want to applaud right now. I want to feel the full moment right now. This is history. I want to feel the emotion of this because its been im not quite 54 years old, but for all of my life almost 50 years on this earth, this flag has been up. People who call themselves friends in Junior High School high school college, waved this flag around and they thought it was so cool its a rebel flag were rebels blah blah blah. Its not cool. No. Its not. It doesnt celebrate any history except for a negative history. When im able to one day have children and i have a beautiful stepdaughter kai who is watching from boca but they dont have to grow up anymore under the auspices of that kferdConfederate Flag and all it means. Van jones . Its a very very important moment. I think theres some things that you have to notice first of all, how respectful this symbol was treated. The idea that people dont respect history. In fact it was treated with much more respect, frankly, than the people who fly that flag often treat their fellow citizens. So it was a somber moment it was handled beautifully. It was an emotional moment. When that flag came down the tears came down because i didnt even realize myself how painful it is to have to kind of suck it up when i go home to the south and see that flag. So when the flag came down the tears came down. Hopefully some barriers can come down and some unity can come forward. Its not just about the symbols of division but the substance of division. We now have a chance to talk about it. The poor white southerners and poor black southerners have more in common than we know, and without that flag dividing us maybe well find a way forward. Yeah. And youre right, the tears did come down. We were all here crying and there were people laughing and we were laughing through the tears. Yes, we were. And i didnt real identifies, van, van, youre absolutely right, i didnt realize i would be so emotional when this flag came down. Think about the transition in South Carolina. We went from walter scott and we had to be resilient, and then we got another punch in the gut when dylann roof went into the church while they were praying and slaughtered nine people, and then today, i mean finally we can breathe, we can sigh we can cheer, we can do all of those. Come together. What were they singing back there . The Old High School song na na na na na na na na hey hey hey goodbye we sang it in high school when we got victory over that team. Another person singing it but more eloquently is president obama. South carolina taking down the Confederate Flag. A signal of good will and healing and a meaningful step towards a better future. Its not just South Carolina. Its louisiana, its North Carolina its virginia. You know its arkansas its alabama, its mississippi. This oppressive flag flies all over the south every single day, and it will continue to fly in other places but it wont be up on this state house. Civil war is finally over. We retired the flag. We just got the notice in South Carolina. Were very excited about that but now, dornn, the most important part is while we celebrate and enjoy the victory today, we have to remember the journey still continues. Come stand behind us. I know it will be odd on camera. Stand behind these two gentlemen, but what does this moment mean for you . This is evidence of faith. Yes. Weve been on this journey for a very very long time. I think what its going to mean a young man told me hes 75 told me. He said i have achieved a lot, i have contributed a lot to society, but because of that Confederate Flag i would never be any more than a boy in South Carolina. Now we can be men. Men. Praise god. Thats right, thats right. It means a lot today. You got me crying. Don charles it is good today. It is good. Charles blow how are you feeling right now . I agree that its a great moment but i have to demure just a little bit. Theres a bit too much pageantry in there. The honor guard. This is not the South Carolina state flag. This is not the American Flag. There is a certain kind of gravitas and honor that was conferred to that flag by the use of that honor guard that i do not think befitting, and i think it kind of taints it a little bit for me. Im sorry. I cant pat everybody on the back for how brave they were for doing something they should have done all along, and in addition to that, you know theres a really interesting moment where they hand it after tying it in a ribbon to the black officer, which is kind of really symbolic and really incredible, and you couldnt have handed it to me. Im going to say this out loud, you couldnt have handed that thing to me oops i dropped something, if fell on the ground whatever. There was a black man who had to put that flag back up when it was taken down. Theres all of that symbolism that really is meaningful to me and also it does not necessarily feel so good. And i was listening to a couple of your guests talk about really be mindful of what has to still happen. Remember that this is a symbol, but it is not about this is a symbol of racism but not the structure of racism and the structure of racism is still very much intact and until we deal with the structures of racism in the same way that we deal with the symbols of racism then were kind of stuck in the same place that we always were. Yeah. The people standing behind me how do you guys feel . [ cheers and applause ] a new day light as the sun, dark as the moon we need one another, come together someone is a carrying a sign here. Are you good . Is it a new day for South Carolina . Is it a new day for america . Yeah this is a celebration here. Thank you very much. I want to bring in now andre duncan who lost his aunt Myra Thompson in the ame massacre and hes been watching this. Whats your reaction to this . I love it man. Its good. I just cant explain how i feel right now because its like i just won a championship or something for the state, but i think South Carolina is going to be the new model for everybody in the country to follow. How they dealt with the nine murders, you know, we had at the church. How theyre dealing with the flag. How everyone stayed calm and came together. And i think thats what its all about. Yeah. And so now the celebration the celebrate something over and its now time for a sober discussion and a way to move the country forward, which i think the president has been discussing which he discussed in reverend Clementa Pinckneys when he did the eulogy here and as you lawmakers have been discussing. We had our moment. Everyone is human, got a little emotional but now its time to reflect and time to look forward. What happens next . The healing process is now. The flag is down. We need to go through that healing process, and then we need to move forward in South Carolina. The nation is watching us and we are setting an example now for the entire nation that is watching us. Chiefmentachievement gaps and disparity in South Carolina. I think with the flag being re3406dre removed, young people feel they can have a chance of success in South Carolina. Around the country kids are being punished because of the area they live in. If we can get all these people together if we can focus on that and make sure that those kids dont go to school in a corridor of shame but a corridor of hope not only will the flag coming down mean something, but clementas spirit can rest in all of us. Thank you, lawmakers. Thank you, andre. Way tonight thank charles blow and also van jones. Our coverage is going to continue live from South Carolina right here at the steps of the state house where this flag no longer flies right after this quick break. [ cheers and applause ] columbia South Carolina with the confederate battle flag removed and now on its way to a Military Museum and the confederate relic room there on state grounds. It was a historic moment not just for South Carolina but for the United States of america. Thank you for staying with us as we roll into the back half hour now and not just in South Carolina but the Confederate Flag is spurring strong emotions over on capitol hill. Congressman john lewis saying the fight is far from over. It is a symbol of division a symbol of separation. It is a symbol of hate. It is a relic of our dark past. We must defeat every attempt to return this flag to federal property. Athea jones isthat jones is joining us from washington where a big funding bill has been put on hold and that has to do with the Confederate Flag as well right . Reporter thats right. A powerful moment watching that flag come down but here on capitol hill this is still a subject of debate. The house gop leadership had to pull a funding bill yesterday because of a flare up. Many angry democrats who are angered at the fact theyre going to be voting on an amendment that would allow the Confederate Flag to still be displayed in cemeteries controlled by the National Park service. A lot of people jointed out this was coming as South Carolina where the war began, the first state to secede theyre bringing down the Confederate Flag and then you have republicans here on capitol hill behind efforts to do just the opposite. There were a lot of passionate words and raw emotions on the house floor coming from democrats yesterday. Lets play what congressman Hakeem Jeffreys had to say about it from new york. Lets play that. There are some in this house who have made the argument that the confederate battle flag is about heritage and tradition. Im perplexed. What exactly is the tradition of the confederate battle flag that were supporting . Is it slavery . Rape . Kidnap . Treason . Genocide . Or all of the above . So thats just a sampling of the emotion we saw on the house floor earlier. You played congressman john lewis. He was beaten by troopers in selma, alabama, on a Voting Rights march 50 years ago and that picture he displayed showed the Confederate Flag being displayed on one of those troopers helmets. Hakeem jeffries said if the people who backed that flag had prevailed, i would still be a slave and not a member of congress. We saw democrats come to the house floor railing against this move by republicans. We didnt see a lot any republican supporters of that amendment to allow the continued displays of the Confederate Flag coming out on the house floor to defend their point of view. We also havent seen a lot of them eager to come on camera to talk about this. Its a sign the debate is not over yet. Ana . Absolutely. It goes sototo show what we saw today in South Carolina is not the end of the conversation its just the beginning of the debate on race in america and whats happening in 2015. Atheana jones, thank you so much. Hes bold brash, bombastic and so far donald trump has dominated the conversation in the race to 2016 with his comments on immigration. Ill build a better wall and for cheaper and mexico will pay. If we bring them back and they push them out. Mexico pushes back people across the border that are criminals, that are drug dealers. Illegal immigrants coming in are causing tremendous problems. In terms of crime, in terms of murder in terms of rape. If somebody is an illegal immigrant, they shouldnt be here at all. There shouldnt be any crime. Theyre not supposed to be in our country. And the white house is taking notice. Yesterday press secretary josh earnest acknowledging trumps comments while slamming Congressional Republicans. These are the same Congressional Republicans who have declined to criticize the racebaiting rhetoric of a leading republican president ial candidate. Thats to say nothing of a Senate Republican who saluted that candidate. Lets talk more about this. Im joined by cnns senior politics reporter chris moody and cnn politics reporter m. J. Lee. Chris, lets start with you. Earnest using harsh words, racebaiting when referring to trump. It seems like at least democrats would like to keep the focus there. Well no surprise there. Donald trump and the way he characterizes immigrants that are in the United States illegally, it makes him a bit of a gift horse to democrats. He is a caricature of what they would love republicans to be because it allows them to promote the caricature of the Republican Party, and it really sets back a lot of republicans that have worked very hard over the past couple years to try to do outreach into especially latino communities. Its not just happening on the Republican Party but also conservative groups have been going into states around the country, and theyve told me over this past week this really does not help their efforts, but it does help democrats who like to paint republicans with a broad brush, and they point to trump as an example. It does seem like the issues of race of immigration, whether were talking about africanamericans and the Confederate Flag coming down or mexican immigrants coming into the United States. I mean this is a very hot topic going into the 2016 election cycle, and its really interesting that people want to talk about it so much that trump is just dominating all the conversation with these comments on immigration. In fact m. J. We took a look at some statistics 48 of social media and traditional media conversations have been about donald trump. This is according to an Analytics Firm that did some research. 1. 9 million comments were on him, compare that to about a half million talking about hillary clinton. What is it that is really resonating with people right now regarding trump . Clearly what people find so appealing about trump is the fact that he will go out there and say anything. When he sat down with Anderson Cooper this week he said look im rich. Im a successful businessman. I am not beholden to anybody, and we have seen that over and over again in the first few weeks of his campaign. But i think its worth pointing out that people who are talking about donald trump on twitter, on facebook they are very divided. There are people who are very enamored by trump and then there are people who cannot stand the guy and the fact that he is so polarizing is actually a potential obstacle for donald trump because when you look at national polls, some 6 in 10 people have said things like i will never vote for donald trump. My decision is made. So hes really working with a pool of people and a limited pool of people and trying to convince them vote for me. And the people who have already divided they would never fot for him, he doesnt have a chance of convincing them to vote for him. Thanks so much. And well be right back. Its time to bid farewell. Her name is katherne archuleta. She runs the office of personal management and thats at the center of one of the largest data breaches in u. S. History. Evan perez is in washington following the story for us this morning. Were now learning some 21 Million People had their information compromised . Reporter thats right, ana. This is a story that gets worse and worse it seems every time the government announces an update. If you remember, they first said it was 4. 2 million. We reported a couple weeks ago now that the fbi had told lawmakers that it was up to about 18 million, and now the number that the office of Personnel Management says the number of people affected has reached 22. 1 million, including 21. 5 million background checks 4. 2 Million People were affected in a secondary breach and, you know this is a story also about an agency that should have seen this coming because according to opm, they have been hacked five times since mid2012. And whats at work here is the concern about what exactly was gotten by these hackers. We believe, by the way, according to the investigators, they believe its Chinese Government hackers that have this chinese intelligence now has a lot of very intimate data on people who applied for Government Security clearances including any sexual histories, any Mental Health histories things like that that people who applied for security clearances entrurssted the government in order to be able to get access to some of the governments biggest secrets, and now they feel that theyve been betrayed because opm did not take enough measures to protect the security of their databases. So has the government now shored up whatever the vulnerability was that allowed these hackers to get in or are people still at risk . That is a great question. To be honest i dont think they know fully that theyve solved this problem. I think they believe that they have. Theyve improved security both at opm, but there is a tremendous problem across the government and they now know this and they also know that because we know that hackers, both from government foreign governments and also criminal hackers are constantly attacking u. S. Government websites. So they know that they have a tremendous problem. This is only the beginning. The problem now is how do you help these people whose Background Information has been compromised . How do you make sure that theyre protected . For years and years now theyre going to have to have credit monitoring and other types of things to be able to protect themselves. Evan perez, thanks for the update. We appreciate it. We now turn to pope francis spending his last day in bolivia, and this morning he visited with families at one of latin americas most violent prisons. He took a political stance calling World Leaders cowards for not defending the earth from exploitation. He then went on to bash modern day capitalism saying quote, this system is by now intolerable. Farm workers find it intolerable, laborers find it intolerable, communities find it intolerable, people find it intolerable. An unfettered pursuit of money rules, that is the dung of the devil. In true heartwarming fashion before his speech the pope made this pit stop at burger king. Inside he made a wardrobe change. Apparently the restaurant was closed at the time. To discuss more lets bring in cnn religion commentator father edward beck. Thanks for being with me. I want to read what reverend james martin said about the popes remarks. Its the strongest language i can remember a pope using about the rights of the poor and of sos justice. I think thats true. Its a strong critique. Hes getting in a little trouble with it with some people, especially in the u. S. Who have criticized that stance. I dont know if you saw the photoop that abel morales had, but he gave the pope a crucifix with christ with a sickle and a hammer being crucified, a communist symbol. The pope didnt know how to respond when he got it. It was obviously unexpected and yet this was morales way of saying this is what i believe in. Im a socialist. The pope is about the gospel of the poor not necessarily a political system but he certainly doesnt think unbridled capitalism is a way to go. So its a strong critique indeed and i think we have seen it before and certainly when it comes to the u. S. Well continue to see it. And, of course the pope weve seen all along since he took over this position he hasnt shied away from controversy and his comments do risk ruffling some feathers. Another quote from his speech, i want to read it to you. It says human beings and nature must not be at the service of money. Lets say no to an economy of exclusion and inequality where money moves rather than service. That economy kills. That economy excludes. That economy destroys mother earth. There are a number of catholic president ial candidates who have focused their message on the economy, Rick Santorum jeb bush Martin Omalley among others. Do you think the pope will shake things up when he comes to the u. S. In september . I think he will. We know he has that speech planned before the joint session of congress. There have been some catholic politicians who have said that the pope should stick to religion and not politics. Obviously the pope is not listening to that advice. Yesterday he made his strongest apology, too, against colonialism apologizing to native south americans for the colonialistic pursuit of missionaries who went to their countries and were not respectful of their traditions. Hes saying things some people dont like some people are cheering but controversy surrounds him and i think it will continue to. Is he doing the right thing . Is this whats best for the Catholic Church . Certainly the Catholic Church needs to be a church of today. If these are the issue that is todays people have in mind, this pope wants to speak to them. Poverty, the environment certainly. Hes speaking to what matters to people. Thats where the church needs to be and he is certainly takes us there. Father edward beck. Hes definitely drawing attention to the Catholic Church no doubt about it. Fast for thanks for your time today. Omar sharif has died.
