The death toll has surged past 3800 and is certain to climb even higher. As the world scrambles to help nepal hospitals overflow with the injured and supplies of medicine are dwindling. Cnns dr. Sanjay gupta is in kathmandu kathmandu. Hes lending his surgical skills to this crisis. He joins us now by phone. I understand youve already performed surgery, sanjay . Yeah thats right, carol. I mean its one of these situations where the demand for care is outpacing the supply. So literally, an extra set of hands, someone to perform a neurosurgical procedure in this case necessary. Thats whats happening here. They have a lot of injured. And immediately after the earthquake as you might imagine there were many injured. Then there was a lull for a little bit. And they thought maybe the worst was over. But thats when the rescue missions which youve been talking about were ongoing and those patients started to make their way into the hospital today as well. Today was one of the busiest days so far of these last few days. Its expected to continue that way over the next several. But, yes, carol, i think theres i was performing an operation because they asked me to. But its a little bit of an idea of whats happening here. An 8yearold girl who had rubble that fell on her head, her house literally collapsed all around her. Her brother was injured, as well. He had fractures of his legs. Her parents for awhile their whereabouts were not known. But the good news is a little bit of good news is the parents were found. And the little girl is doing very well, carol. Are the hospitals absolutely overflowing, sanjay . Yeah you know theres two situations first of all one of the big hospitals here is 120 years old. When the earthquake happened there was a lot of concern about would it even be able to sustain itself . Im certain with all the aftershocks, some of them quite large, they just decided to move these patients to another building. A building that wasnt in fact a hospital. And wasnt functioning as a hospital. So you know they have to find they have to make place for patients wherever they can. Theyre performing operations in rooms that arent sipically used for operations. And right now im in a tent city outside where so many people are living. Thousands of people all around me here living not necessarily because their homes are destroyed but because theyre worried that they could be still with these tremors that are ongoing. Going back to that little girl that you performed surgery on. Did you have the right surgical tools to be able to do that . Somewhat. You know whats interesting is that they do have generator power in this particular hospital. The facility functioning as a hospital. The problem is its very unclear how long that power is going to last. So they dont use it for things like particular operations that may require a lot of power. Theyre trying to keep the breathing machines the ventilators, the lights on all that sort of stuff. So we had to use more rudimentary tools than we otherwise would use. But it was enough to get the operation done. Tools that people have used in war zone settings and Natural Disaster settings in the past and its what we did here again as well. All right dr. Sanjay gupta thank you so much. The hospital scramble to save the living rescuers are finding new signs of life amid the rubble. The work is gruelling, painstaking and often heartbreaking. Earlier on Cnn International we heard from one trekking guide who joined the rescue effort in kathmandu. This is one of the main squares, the palace squares in kathmandu which attracts a lot of tourists. These are all very old structures hundreds of years old, and its completely gone down. But initial efforts they brought in the excavator to dig out as many bodies today weve been digging with our hands and trying to find out more survivors. Behind that temple over there is another very famous structure, which is completely down. There are suspicions that there are people underneath. Weve been trying to get them to cry for help and weve been digging along trying to rescue them out. Have you come across have you found any survivors . Well today itself they pulled out at least two or three bodies from towards my left. Towards my right there is just behind this where the excavator is digging theres another temple thats in ruins and people are digging with their hands and shovels. We think that our few people at least one person there because we heard a small, faint voice, about an hour ago but weve been trying to find them. They havent weve not seen them yet. Just so tragic. A lot of humanitarian aid is necessary. Arwa damon has that part of the story. Were just speaking with some of these kids and their families. Theyve all come to get treatment at this mobile clinic here. And a lot of them are camped out in this park. The vast majority of the families here consider themselves to be the lucky ones. They managed to survive. All of them describing the horrific moments that the earthquake struck describing how the ground trembled. And this right now is the only place where they really feel safe because of all of the aftershocks that have taken place. People quite simply are too afraid to risk going back home. Even if they do have a home that has not been damaged. Because of the reality of the fact that there could be many more aftershocks no one is really sure what is taking place. Here in the park theyre saying that there are bathrooms that they can use, that they are receiving a certain level of assistance when it comes to food and water. But, of course if this continues for a long time there are going to be concerns about basic services and keeping the whole camp sanitary. You see encampments like this throughout the entire city. On a much smaller scale, but people waiting for whatever reassurance it is that theyre going to need to be able to eventually go back home. Arwa damon, cnn, kathmandu. All right. His Funeral Service will be held in a couple of hours. 15 days after the baltimore man was first arrested by police suffering a fatal spinal cord injury in the process, the questions surrounding mr. Grays death prompting protests and multiple investigations. Three white house officials including cabinet secretary broaddrick johnson are expected to atrend the service. Theyll be joined by the Group Families united for justice. They include the families of eric garner and amadou diallo and others who died under questionable circumstances. Cnns athena jones in baltimore for you. Speaking of those questionable circumstances there are still a lot of Unanswered Questions about how freddie gray came to be so severely injured during that police van ride two weeks ago. But today the focus is on honoring his memory and saying goodbye to him. Grays family has asked that there not be any protests today. This after that largely peaceful demonstration on saturday ended in violence. There were skirmishes, vandalism, Six Police Officers suffered minor injuries. A lot of supporters have been saying that they need the time and the space to heal after this incident and that protests that can become violent, those end up being distractions. One people who said that is congressman Elijah Cummings. He represents about half of the city of baltimore. And hell be one of the speakers at todays service. Yesterday he spoke emotionally about the toll this incident has taken not just on grays family but on the Baltimore Community as a whole. He told me he wants to see the Baltimore Police department make changes so that it can become a Model Department for the country. And he also talked about the importance of improving Police Community relations. Lets take a listen. I do believe that this is for this generation this is the civil rights cause. Respect from the authorities like the police. They shouldnt have to fight that fight. But theyre fighting it. And so it pains me that they have to go through that. And so there you heard him say that its the Police Community relations is the civil rights cause of this generation. We could hear echoes of that theme in his remarks today. As you mentioned several white house officials will also be in attendance. We expect a lot of emotion and perhaps some Straight Talk about the kind of changes that need to take place to avoid this kind of incident from happening again. All as the family and friends of freddie gray gather to say goodbye. We just saw the hearse pull up a few minutes ago so this will all be getting under way in just another couple of hours or so. Athena jones reporting live from baltimore. As you heard her say the family of freddie gray is asking for a halt in the protests as they prepare to bury mr. Gray. That request comes as 35 people were arrested over the weekend in scuffles that followed a week of Peaceful Demonstrations. The mayor of baltimore addressing the citys residents and appealing for a sense of unity. At the end of the day, we are one baltimore. We need to support Peaceful Demonstrations and continue to enforce in our communities, violence and looting will not be tolerated. I want to bring in reverend jim obrien pastor of the empowerment temple church. Hell deliver mr. Grays eulogy in just a few hours. Welcome. Thank you. Good morning. Good morning. I suspect it was difficult for you to come up with the right words to say about mr. Gray. Not difficult at all. He was a young man who was in the prime of his life just 25 all he had in front of him was his future. And his family is mourning and overwhelmed by it but i pray today they get some closure. Are you going to say are you going to say some words are you going to address the city of baltimore, too, and the unity that the mayor spoke about . Absolutely. I think that this has really been a drawing board for all of us. East and west baltimore coming to the. Youre going to see a reflection and evidence of that on today. But the focus will be primarily on the family. But we still march on. We still realize that we still have to deal and address this issue after the funeral is over. And so were going to keep marching albeit peaceably. Youre not asking that people not protest. But you also say the bible is clear, sin not. What message do you want to send to the city of baltimore . The scripture says be angry but sin not. That you have a right to have righteous indignation, to be upset, and have a right to vent that. Weve called for no protests on today. Tomorrow were going to be doing a town hall meeting, at our church for people to come to voice and to express their grievance. But then to talk about strategy. What is the next step . How do we begin the healing process . Not just for the family but for the entire city. We still have an issue with a broken and a corrupt Police Department that has to be addressed headon. The mayor and the Police Commissioner said outside agitators were responsible for the looting and the broken windows in police cars over the weekend. Who are those outside agitators . I really dont know. And i dont know whether its outside agitators or the evidence of internal frustration. A lot of baltimoreans are upset and flustered about how policing has taken place here in the city of baltimore. So many Unanswered Questions. If there was no charges, why was he even in the Police Vehicle . And if there were no charges, taking him to the precinct what was to be done . And so those kinds of questions are going to have to be answerable both by the mayor and the Police Commissioner. And is there a message that you want to send to the people who were violent over the weekend . Yes. That we are not going to in any way besmirch the name the legacy of freddie gray. That were seeking out justice for justice never comes at the hands of violence. It is not ours to seek out revenge but to seek out justice. And we believe that justice it going to be served and the city of baltimore is going to be better because of it. Reverend jamal bryant thanks so much for being with me. I appreciate it. Thank you. Over the next few weeks tsarnaevs lawyers will continue to paint the convicted marathon bomber as a victim himself. Calling him, quote, a puppet following his older brothers instruction. Members of the tsarnaev family are now in boston. Notably missing, his mother who cannot come back to the United States because of a shoplifting charge. The tsarnaev family that did make it to boston for the trial had to be moved to an undisclosed location because of the media frenzy surrounding them. Deborah feyerick is outside the courthouse where proceedings are about to begin. Good morning. Good morning there, carol. Yeah the family arrived on thursday and immediately they were swamped by members of the press. Its really the first time that anybody has seen anyone directly connected to Dzhokhar Tsarnaev here in massachusetts. The court has been absent of his sisters, of his parents who are over in chechnya and dagestan the mother apparently not well. And family also at odds as to whether in fact this has been the right Defense Strategy for Dzhokhar Tsarnaev who has never complained about the Legal Assistance that hes getting. But were really expecting a very different picture of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev the young man who came when he was very young, who was torn between loyalties to his adopted country of america, but also deep connection to his chechen roots. His grandmother expected possibly to take the stand in his defense, as are other members, to portray him in a somewhat sympathetic light and to also say that in fact he was brainwashed by his older, dominant brother. So the defense is really wrestling with trying to save this young man, to save his life to show him as somebody who is sympathetic, and worthy really of another chance certainly, to stave off the Death Penalty. Saturdays massive earthquake pulverizing ancient buildings, crews picking through the rubble by hand in the hopes of finding any signs of life. Cnns ivan watson is in kathmandu. Emergency workers here are doing the difficult, dirty, urgent work of digging through the rubble of what was the tallest building in this neighborhood. A building that was literally knocked over crushing vehicles and resulting in the deaths of dozens of people. Tragically there was a church here where there was a Prayer Service in session on saturday when the earth began to shake. So most of at least 28 People Killed were churchgoers, in prayer when they were trapped inside. Now, some of the personal effects of these people being brought over and piled up in a sad pile here. Theres a guitar behind these Nepalese Police officers. A bible on top of this pile. Now there are examples of International Assistance coming. The gentleman here in orange are part of Natural Disaster teams that have come in from india. As for the people well nobody is going to their homes right now. Though most of the buildings in this neighborhood are still standing. Many of them have dangerous looking cracks. And people quite literally saying theyre too traumatized after the earthquake too frightened by the aftershocks, to dare to go inside so they are sleeping and resting out into the streets, shops, schools, closed here. Back to you. All right. Ivan watson reporting. Cnns nick valencia joins me now. Three americans died as a result of this earthquake. Tell us about them. Yes, carol, thats right. We know that at least 17 people were killed on mt. Everest. Among them at least three americans. We want to try to bring meaning to those numbers. Bringing some very personal stories of those who were impacted by this devastating earthquake. Dan fredinburg was a google executive one of those killed on the mountain. He was an avid adventurer and mountain climber and was on that tour when the avalanche triggered by the earthquake encapsulated him and his crew. Earlier yesterday we spoke with one of those closest to dan, his girlfriend. I mean, he was just magical. And just by making the choices that he made i think it was always intentional. He had this way of making the people around him just feel special. Without even trying. And he makes people feel like they could accomplish anything that they wanted. And that you know they hadnt accomplished enough that there was more that they could do and that there was more that they could be because every Single Person around him was so special and amazing. And he brought out the best for him and me and i say he brought out the best in everyone around him. Its just he constantly makes you want to be the best version of yourself. And thats without trying. Thats just by the actions that he would take. Another one of those victims that was on that mountaintop when the avalanche struck was eve girawong originally from new jersey. A base camp doctor. She was there on the mountaintop. Youre looking at that young woman there right now. She was in the process of getting her Second Degree masters degree in mountain medicine before she died. Over the weekend, her employer took to facebook to deliver the grim news. It is with deep store row and profound grief we can confirm the loss of her Everest Base Camp dr. Marisa eve girawong. Eve perished in the aftermath of the avalanche that struck the base camp area following the devastating nepal earthquake. Many of you may be watching this at home and wondering how you can help. There are still many people unaccounted, very many victims that need your assistance. Were encouraging everyone to go to cnn. Com impact where you can hopefully make a difference. Carol . Take a look at the lines outside of the court in d. C. Dozens of people have been camping out for days hoping to snag a seat inside the court. In the mean time opponents of gay marriage are out in force like most of the republicans running for president. Senator ted cruz speaking before the iowa state in Freedom Summit called democrats who support gay marriage fascists. God bless todays Democratic Party it seems has decided there are no room for christians. In the Democratic Party. The modern Democratic Party has gotten so extreme, so intolerant there is a liberal fascism that is dedicated to going after and targeting believing christians. Who follow the biblical teachings. J. C. Watts joins me now from washington a former republican oklahoma congressman. Welcome, sir. Thank you for being with me. Thank you, carol, for having me. Thanks for being here. So marco rubio also spoke out against gay marriage but said he would attend a gay wedding. Bobby jindal is ready to sign legislation in louisiana allowing Business Owners to deny service to gay weddings. But he too, would attend a gay wedding for someone close he loved and cared for. Even senator ted cruz attended a dinner hosted by two men who own hotels two gay men who support gay marriage. Arent these behaviors contradictory . Well carol, i think any time a person is operating in love and friendship any time youre leading with love i dont think thats ever bad. I dont think thats ever wrong. I think that theres this saying in the country today that we all seem to be you know so many of us seem to be angry, and hostile, and we have no joy, and thats not the christian way. And i think, you know what these men have said you have people in the Gay Community who are their friends, and theyre trying to be supportive of their friends. I think we can be supportive and disagree. I mean i love my children. But i still discipline my children. So i disagree with my children on things. So i still love them however. So i think because we disagree it doesnt mean that we cant be friends or that we cant love. So what senator ted cruz said about the democrats being fascists, is that love . Well carol, i think there is a sense in the Faith Community, you know prolife catholics, and the protestant community, in many communities of faith, i think there is a sense that you know theres hostility toward our christians. Bible believing christians as ted cruz said and i think when you, you know i can tell you that it surely has become a little more hostile toward bible believing christians over the last ten years. Over the last five years. So i think that thats a fair assessment. I think its an honest assessment. I dont think you have to say those type of things trying to be difficult, or trying to be hostile. I think that is a true sense of how the Faith Community feels today. Even the majority of conservatives on the republican side think that gay people should be able to marry legally. So some of the republican candidates because of that because they want to attract these young voters they want this issue of samesex marriage to fade but i think thats going to be tough because the Family Research council is demanding candidates sign a pledge of support for a federal marriage amendment to the constitution. Do you think that all of the republican candidates should sign such a thing . Well you know the voters carol, are going to decide. And you know rand paul believes im a supporter of rand paul. And he has stated that he believes that marriage should be a state issue. However, youve got federal judges that overturning the marriage issue, and as you have stated here were going to hear oral arguments tomorrow at the supreme court. So i think there are many people who believe that marriage should be defined as one man and one woman, and they believe theres no better alternative than that. So you know its an issue that is upon us and the supreme court, theyre going to hear oral arguments tomorrow about it. But, if regardless of whatever way they ruled, theres still going to be a broad swath of people that believed and will continue to fight for marriage for a biblical definition of marriage which is one man and one woman. I dont know how broad it is any longer. Every poll shows that most americans are in favor of samesex marriage. So let me ask you this question but carol, those who disagree with that, you know i mean thats the american way. Freedom of religion says in terms of marriage those who believe that it should be one man and one woman, that is a world view. Now theres a world view that disagrees with that. But well there are also anti dealing with. Discrimination laws on the book as well. And thats a thats another issue for another time. Ill have to come back. Not tomorrow because the u. S. Supreme court is going to be talking about that. What about republican candidate came out for gay marriage would that kill or her candidacy you think . Well, carol, thats up to the voters. You know well have you have people in the Republican Party today, candidates running for offices all over the country in the Republican Party that they believe or they support samesex marriage. You know thats going to be up to up to the voters. You know when i chose to run for office i made it known where i stood on social and economic issues. And i got elected and i got reelected. And so you know people the voters will make that determination. But nevertheless, there are differing world views on how marriage should be defined. All right. J. C. Watts, thank you so much for being with me. I appreciate it. Thank you for having me. Any time. Ill be right back. When laquinta. These pictures shot by a drone from reuters giving us just a sense of how bad the damage is in nepal. Now, u. S. Military special forces teams are helping rescue efforts. Cnns pentagon correspondent Barbara Starr has that part of the story. Good morning, barbara. Good morning, carol. All of this of course at the request of the government of nepal asking the u. S. For some additional assistance. We are told by the pentagon two special forces aid teams that had already been in nepal for High Altitude training will now begin helping search some of the more popular trekking routes in nepal, including the Everest Base Camp route, trying to look for any trekkers that may be stranded injured, or perhaps even killed in the aftermath of all of these earthquakes and aftershocks. So they will help with the nepal army to begin searching these popular trekking routes at these very High Altitudes. Its about 2,000 special forces that had actually already been there for some High Altitude training. They also have specialized medical training so they will also help with some medical assistance setting up some tents for people. The people of nepal who may be homeless have nowhere to go back to or too afraid to go back in to their homes. All of this part of the effort to help this International Effort that is unfolding. Its really interesting, the u. S. Has been assisting nepal with earthquake preparedness for some time and, in fact just last week thered been a workshop with the government of nepal in that country to share some equipment, some training to help with upgrading the International Airport there. All of that the pentagon says is paying off now, as you see dozens of countries jumping in to help. Nepal may be a very poor country, but it is a very proud country. They want to do as much as they can on their own. The u. S. Helping when the government of nepal says it has a request for that help. Care . We love life. We were stronger than ariel castro. He was sentenced to life in prison but he killed himself later. Still to come in the newsroom, Bruce Jenners interview didnt rock the ratings but got the whole nation thinking. Well talk about that next. Would i stay in someone elses house . But this morning a city ive never been to felt like one i already knew. I just wanted to thank you for sharing your world with me. It felt like home. Airbnb. Belong anywhere. I want to take you back to baltimore for just a bit where later this morning the funeral for freddie gray will take place. People look at me differently. This he see you as this macho male but my heart and soul and everything i do in life is part of me that female side is part of me. Thats who i am. Jenner is adding another voice to transgenderism among signs america might be more accepting. Over the weekend orange is the new black star attended the Correspondents Dinner saying 2014 was a watershed moment for transgender visibility but the record unemployment rates, homicide rates and discrimination that we experience has not changed. Many applaud abc says it was educational and insightful. This societys perception shifting . Lets talk about that. Welcome, mark. Thanks carol. 17 Million People watched that interview with bruce jenner. Why do you suppose so many watched . Well i think people are just interested in this person that they knew either as an olympian or as a reality tv person and they wanted to know what was up and i think it was hard for a lot of people to believe and now as you said bruce jenner added another voice of transgender people to the conversation. Thats really important. People probably learned quite a bit on friday night. I think they did learn quite a bit because i thought it was an excellent special. I think that some of it left people more confused than ever. What would you say to those people . Every transgender persons story is different. Bruce jenners is very individual. Its somebody who has been in the public eye. Its somebody who has been in a macho profession and has a macho image from years ago. If people arent totally up to speed yet on the lingo or on the correct practices, thats okay. They learned a little bit more. They could certainly see how honest jenner was being and how full of courage and integrity. Thats a big plus. Is cox right when she says 2014 was a watershed moment for transgender visibility . Absolutely. I think cox is almost always right. Shes just phenomenal. Shes absolutely correct. Weve had a remarkable run of really good stories being told. Shes raised up other peoples voices and thats what this story does. We see all over america tv affiliates seeking out local transgender people to give their story and we see local newspapers doing it. Genders story is important and so important to jenner its just one of our stories and bruce jenner has given us the gift of being able to leverage that to tell our own stories. When might things really change . When will most of america accept people as they are . Its happening. The truth is that all over america things are happening. Transgender people are being arrested just for being transgender. Theres a lot of violence. In baltimore you were talking about the freddie gray story. In baltimore every year transgender people are murdered. It isnt the kind of people that get to be on the news all the time who get to have a twohour interview with diane sawyer. These are real problems. Anything we can do to leverage jenners coming out to get those stories across is so important. It is getting better. Just not for everybody. Certainly not fast enough. Thank you for being with us. I appreciate it. The next hour of cnn newsroom starts now. Good morning. Im carol costello. Thank you for joining me.
