Final election day push for remembers, jeb bush, marco rubio, chris christie. When our Republican Party is at its best, we can walk and chew gum at the same time. For democrats, Hillary Clinton hit three states for female senate candidates. Whos going to be there for you . Who cares about you . Who works for you . Reporter bill clinton went to iowa. I can tell you this, you need to vote for progress, not protest. You need to think about what you want for the next six years. Reporter still, republican and democratic sources say 2 gop looks increasingly likely to seize the senate sma majority and iowa, where james taylor playing made it appear more peace rally than pep rally, is a big reason why. Shower the people you love with loaves reporter republican joni ernst was shown pulling ahead. Its not just republican, its independents and a lot of democrats that see the need to change direction. Reporter iowa is so critical to the balance of power that Senate Majority leader harry reid told democratic volunteers in a Conference Call that if they lose iowa it will be very hard for democrats to keep control of the senate. Heres why. Republicans need to flip six senate seats to take control. West virginia, montana, and south dakota, which was briefly in flux, are now almost sure to be gop pickups. Democrats are bracing for incumbent defeats in arkansas and colorado. Early colorado voting shows republicans eight points ahead of democratic ballots according to the u. S. Elections project. Democrats also say losing alaska is likely, though they havent gauged an unprecedented voter turnout. They feel better about North Carolina and New Hampshire but both show polls within the margin of error. And there are wilds. The republican incumbent in kansas could lose to an independent who could caucus we they are party. Both Mitch Mcconnell and harry reid van far too partisan for far too long. Reporter louisiana and georgia will likely go into december and january runoffs respectively. Democratic sources ive spoken to say that they do have a narrow path to victory to keeping control in the senate but they also admit thats unlikely, carol, and they say their best hope is to keep the republicans at a razorthin majority with the hope of flipping back the balance of power as soon as two years from now. Carol . Dana bash reporting live from washington this morning. Thank you. Were closely watching two Contentious Senate races in georgia and Kyra Phillips is live in atlanta but ana cabrera is in denver. Ana, democratic senator mark udall is hoping to be elected for a second term but hes trailing corery gardner by three points in the latest Public Policy polling. Tell us more. Cory. Carol, thats one of many polls that now has the republican challenger leading which is raising eyebrows here in the state and across the nation. Were inside one of the places where theyre already sorting the early votes that are coming in. Theyre already doing signature verification, will hit the button to do the tallying tomorrow night. Heres whats unique about colorado, every active voter got one of these, a mailin ballot so they have the option to mail it box, drop it off or do it the oldfashioned way and go to the polls on Election Night. The idea is this added convenience may lead to greater voter turnout and we know already more than a million colorado voters have cast their ballots. So far, republicans have the edge with about 100,000 more republican affiliated voters already casting their ballots and turning them in compared to democrats. But democrats say they really werent worried just yet, thats to be expected in colorado. They typically see their base turn out later so we do expect that gap to close. Heres the other thing thats interesting and noteworthy in colorado. This is a state that has about a third independence, a third republican affiliated voters and about a third democrats. Independents seem to be leading towards gardner but its also a state that has a growing latino population, a highly engaged female votership, also has a growing number of young people moving to the state which may help the democrats. So the bottom line here, carol, is a lot of the Analysts Expect it to be a close race and say that colorados election could go well into the latenight hours or the wee earlymorni in hours and analysts say as goes colorado so go the nation so this is one of the reasons to watch, carol. Ana cabrera, thanks to you. Now to georgia, the race for an empty seat is too close to call. Republican david perdue holds a slight lead over Michelle Nunn but that advantage happens to be the margin of error. Kyra phillips is in atlanta with a closer look. I think were all going to have a late night. Well all be working with the wee hours, carol. I think so. What should have been a sure thing for david perdue and fellow republicans could now impact, and weve been talking about this for weeks now, who could control the senate. If republicans lose control of the senate because they lose georgia, well, that would be embarrassment on top of disaster for the gop and thats because georgia is a deeply red state. Republicans thought thikd win easily and now its in play and its in play because democrat Michelle Nunn is extremely competitive. Why so competitive . Shifting demographics and also the fact shes been running as a sort aof a republicrat. Hammering perdue on his system of outsourcing but perdues criticism, he says shes too cozy with obama. Major fodder for a weekend debate. This president is adamant about getting you in the senate because he needs you to be his rubber stamp in the senate. His fail policies are indeed on the ballot and in georgia they go by the name of Michelle Nunn. Ive spent about 45 minutes of my life with president obama. I have spent seven years working for president george h. W. Bushs points of Light Organization and i have a deep and abiding commitment, ive talked about it for the entire campaign, to working across party lines. I believe that we can Work Together to get things done. Carol, you mentioned its a close race, it is, with just four points separating nunn and purdue. But i want to show you another poll number. This one was broken down by race. Among africanamerican voters, nunn leads with an eyepopping 85 of the vote. So until tomorrow its all about get out the vote and that means knocking on doors and getting people to come out to the polls. Also, keep in mind if no candidates here reach 50 plus 1, and dana mentioned this at the top of the hour, this georgia race goes into a runoff january 6, carol. So we might be waiting a long time. Fascinating race, though, Kyra Phillips, many thanks. Of course as kyra said minorities are important because they have to democrats need them to get out the vote in order to win. They also need women, especially unmarried women. So lets talk about that. I want to bring in cnn political commentator and democratic strategist hilary rosen and cnn political commentator and republican consultant margaret hoover. Welcome to bot of you. Good morning, carol. Good morning. So lets center on women voters, shall we . Margaret, no one seems to know how to appeal to women or talk about them. Jodi ernst has run a great Senate Campaign in iowa. Her democratic contender, not so much. So how did retiring democratic senator criticize ernst on the issues . No. Listen. And theres the sense that joni ernst, shes really attractive. And she sounds nice. Well, i got to thinking about that. I dont care if shes as good looking as taylor swift or as nice as mr. Rogers. But if she votes like Michele Bachmann shes wrong for the state of iowa. [ cheers and applause ] i know that was hard to hear but in essence he says i dont care if shes as good looking as taylor swift or nice as apple pie. So, margaret nice as mr. Rogers. He threw a guy in there. He threw a guy in there. Its unfortunate senator harken would say when joni ernst would be the first female combat veteran elected to the u. S. Senate and the first woman elected statewide in iowas history. Its unfortunate. You hear about the war on women but i think the headline here is that the war on women has failed to solidify a lead for democrats in women in this election cycle and you see Mitch Mcconnell is leading Alison Grimes, a woman, by four points in kentucky. You have the Republican Senate candidates in arkansas, in alaska, and in colorado leading by women. So you what you actually see is republicans have done pretty well by all standards, especially against the backdrop of a failed 2012 this time around. Partly because we have good candidates. Another example of that, hilary, some dun pits say the democrat mark udall is losing because all he talks about is Birth Control and abortion and its turned women voters off. Agree . Well, he is getting criticized for being more their roerks obviously. That was a significant issue in 2012. To the extent that the Republican Party has woken up and figured out how to run more women, that obviously helps. It helps with the overall brand. But i think that were playing a little too much into this sign of giant lead. There is no giant lead anywhere. Everything is razor thin and i actually in iowa am comforted by some early voting numbers that weve mean . The last 24 hours where actually democrats are voting more than republicans in early voting. And so really the key to this election, yes, its women, yes, its africanamerican for a lot of these democratic states like iowa and North Carolina and louisiana and georgia. But really the most important piece, though, is voters who came out in 2012, who didnt come out in 2010 getting those voters out and were seeing that in pockets like North Carolina, like georgia, like iowa. I see margaret shaking her head, though. No, no, i only wanted to add to your early voting point, hilary, which is that as you know, democrats tend to do bet we are early voting and whats different this time is that republicans have maybe woken up again and actually invested in early voting. The iowa gop put a Million Dollars into their early voting apparatus. As i understand the numbers, democrats are leading by a margin, about 2,000 votes and we know republicans turn out on election day so they would need their margin to be larger going into election day. So i think that bodes well for joni ernst and the republicans in iowa. Well, lets switch topics for just a second because i want to talk about minority votes, too, because thats also important. Historically Midterm Elections dont draw much support across the board. For africanamericans the last few cycles midterm participation hovered around the low 40s versus the mid60s for president ial elections. So will africanamerican voters jump this time . Will they turn out, hilary . You know, there are pockets of voters that are disillusioned and africanamericans are clearly out there. The fact that the president has not run a National Campaign but, in fact, has been communicating in more discrete circles, its a strategy. Well see if it ends up working in terms of africanamerican turnout. Having said that, i think that you have candidates like a Jeanne Shaheen in New Hampshire, like kay hagen in North Carolina and who have a really strong record of Economic Issues and fighting for the middleclass and i think that the biggest problem weve had in potential turnout of africanamerican voters is theres not enough contrast on middleclass and Economic Issues and we have to work harder as a party to go back to those roots. Thats whats won in the last several cycles and i think this desolving into local issues and name calling hasnt helped us here. Margaret . Republicans need to go after minority votes and i think weve seen fortunately some fresh faces in this debate. Weve seen rand paul start going to the naacp, weve seen paul ryan going to urban areas across the country. We see the rnc opening up an office in detroit. So the minority vote has for many years been monopolized by democrats and i am encouraged by new faces in the Republican Party reaching out and trying to make in roads there, too. Well give you a run for your money, hilary. I think we saw in georgia with the numbers that you just posted, africanamericans are less the issue in terms of who theyre going to vote for solidly democratic. The real surprise in this election may end up being the latino vote which surged significantly for democrats in 2012. The immigration debacle both on the republican and on the democratic side made this a very mixed bag for the latino vote in this election and i think that we need to work harder to narrow that gap in a much more significant way. Well, well see what happens come tomorrow night, right. Hilary rosen, margaret hoover, thanks to both of you. From congress to the governors mansions across the country, its the election that will shape the nation for the next two years. Join cnn tomorrow night for Election Night in america. It could take year to determine why the Virgin Galactic spaceship two disintegrated during a test flight but one early focus on the ntsb is on the feathering system which helps slow the spacecraft down toward earth. Investigators say the copilot moved the systems lock unlock lever too early. The copilot was killed. The pilot survived and is talking with his family and doctors. Cnns poppy harlow spoke with Virgin Group Founder Richard Branson. What does he say . He says he doesnt want to jump to conclusion but they think it might be the feathering system so it may be an error. Theyre just not sure. We talked about the risk because ive covered this for many years and asked him last year for example in the mohave desert is the risk really worth it and he said to me then unless you risk something, the world stays still. So i asked him that question this morning, heres what he said . Yes, the risk is worth it. And as i say, mike would have been the first to say that. Im sure his parents and his wife and his sisters would not say that. But test pilots would say that because they know the risk theyre taking. They know the importance of what theyre doing. Weve got to go through the difficult testing stage of creating a space line in order to make it safe for travelers who want to travel on that space line in the years ahead and, you know, we will persevere and we will succeed. So he believes they are going to succeed despite this death and this severe injury. Cnns aviation analyst miles obrien said this morning that he thinks Richard Branson has consistently underestimated the risk and has glossed that over to the public so i asked branson about that. He obviously doesnt agree and he compared this to aviation over the atlantic in the 1920s or 30s. But this begs the question. How many people will stand by this company and trust them to go into space and how far is this going to push things back . A lot of Unanswered Questions still. Poppy harlow, thanks so much. Fascinating interview. Joining me now for the latest on the investigation, christopher hart, the acting chairman of the National Transportation safety board live in the mohave desert near the crash site. Welcome, sir. Thank you for having me. Thank you for being here. New clues have emerged about what went wrong before fridays disaster and they all involve the spacecrafts feathering. Can you describe what the feathering process is and what you believe went wrong . The feathering process involves the tail feathers of this airplane. They move into the position when you see in this model because when the spacecraft reaches its apogee and returns to the atmosphere these help keep it from accelerating more than it needs to. Do you believe it was pilot error that caused the feathering system to go wrong . Well, its far too early to know that at this stage. Were investigating a number of aspects. Theres a lot we dont know. Yet we revealed the fact that the lock unlock lever as you mentioned before was moved to unlock prematurely and that the aerodynamic forces then deploy it had feather and shortly thereafter the aircraft the space vehicle disintegrated. So we know that as a fact but thats just one of the facts in the several links to the chain of this event. So we are exploring all of those links. It will take us a good period of time to explore all those links. One of the facts is that lock unlock lever was moved to unlock prematurely. Have investigators been able to talk to the surviving pilot . We have not. Were awaiting permission from his doctors to say that hes medically able to be interviewed. Why will the investigation take so long . Up to a year. Well, our onscene part is going to be a week or so, but after were finished with the onscene part, we do extensive investigation to look into a number of factors. For example, in this case well look at what it was that caused this deployment of the unlocked lever to unlock early. Was there a problem with training . Was there a problem with design . Was there a problem with procedures . Was fatigue an issue . Theres lots of issues. Was there a Safety Culture problem . Was there pressure to do testing . Theres lots of issues that well be looking at over the course of the investigation. The ntsb has done Amazing Things with past investigations, but this is the first time the ntsb has investigated a spacecraft investigation. Any unique challenges . Well, were actively involved with the investigation with nasa of the challenger and the Columbia Launches but this is the first time weve been in charge of one. Were finding since it was a test its rich with data and thats going to help tremendously with the investigation process because we have so much data from sources, if on board cameras, from on board nonvolatile sources, we have ground cameras, we have lots of witnesses, we have quite a bit of information that we would not normally have in an operational accident that we have in a test zblent christopher hart, thanks for bringing us up to date. We appreciate it. Thank you. Still to come in the newsroom, Mitch Mcconnell pulling away in kentuckys senate race, poised to become the next Senate Majority leader. Its been one of the toughest battles of Mitch Mcconnells political life. After 30 years in the senate, the Kentucky Republican is facing a fierce charge from democratic newcomer alison lundgren grimes. But the latest poll shows mcconnell is poised not only to hang on to his seat but possibly assume the title of Senate Majority leader. He has a commanding ninepoint lead over grimes. But Lundergan Grimes says she isnt done yet. Mitch mcconnell can buy the airwaves but he can not buy the hearts and minds of each and every one of you. You know that after 30 years, three decades of Mitch Mcconnell we deserve better. Were coming down the home stretch. Let me tell you, this strong, independent kentucky woman, i got kick left still in me [ applause ] im not giving up. Shes got to overcome nine points, though. Here now cnn political commentator and democratic strategist hilary rosen and republican consultant margaret hoover. Welcome to both of you. Thank you. Thanks for being here. Sohill rir so hilary, is it over . The odds are against Alison Grimes but heres the interesting thing for me about that race which is a lot of republicans i talk to say that republican senators are furious at Mitch Mcconnell. That his race has been so close, that he has cost so much money that if other republicans lose their race the fact that mcconnell had to take and divert millions and millions and millions of dollars of gop senate money to save his own race is not going to let him come charging into the senate with any kind of great enthusiasm. So margaret, what do you think about that . The fact that he is so unpopular is whats so interesting to me. And its not so much that hes unpopular as much as there was this Real Tea Party revolution in kentucky which really set the table for his race a few years ago when rand paul was elected. Its anybodys to thank or begrudge at senator rand paul. But theres a lot of discontent for harry reid. Theres a lot of democrats saying if for some reasons the democrats hold on a teeny bit they wouldnt necessarily vote for reid to return as majority leader. So theres discontent to go around but Mitch Mcconnell has a real opportunity and the republicans have a real opportunity to set the table going into 2016 because if they do have the senate, finally theres this possibility that legislation can get out of the senate and get to the president s desk and weve seen historically when one party has one branch of congress and the other party has the presidency, these have historically been the times in our democracy when the most has gotten done. Heres the problem. Youre right, margaret, if Mitch Mcconnell wins in kentucky hell probably become the majority leader and that would mean that harry reid is out and republicans most likely would rejoice. But i dont think its going to be that easy for mcconnell because senator ted cruz has come out and said he would not pledge his support. Isnt that an ams now sign, hillary . Well, i think that the line the republicans are using now 1 that they can shift the gridlock and if they get both houses of congress i think they have big problems. One is theyre going to have at least two probably three and maybe four republican senators who will be running for president and they will not be in Mitch Mcconnells back pocket. So they are going to want to have their own independence, theyll want to be antideal. They wont want to negotiate with the president to get things done and have the president sign things so you have that problem. Then the other problem is a huge am of business money went into the senate this time and those businesses will want to get their due having invested so much. The problem is that they have competing interests. So when you look at issues like tax reform or infrastructure, whether youre a corporation based mostly overseas or whether youre mostlies bied here, whether youre manufacturing versus services, those are huge, complicated issues. So im not confident things will move that quickly. Im just saying i dont think voters will be that picky. They just want maybe one thing to get done because you remember congress hasnt been doing squat, right . You look at the big ngs thin the table, education, all of those have Politics Associated with it. I dont think Mitch Mcconnell will have any easier time of it. If he has a majority it comes back to who can run the senate more effectively. Mitch mcconnell has had some success in keeping his caucus together especially when there were barely 40 of them. Its time to give the republicans a chance. If we want nothing to happen in washington we can just keep with the status quo because we know thats how the table is set for the next two years. If one element of this dynamic switches, there is a chance for it. You raise a good point. A lot of these republican senators, three, four of them, may be running for president but that doesnt mean theres not at least a sixmonth sweet spot which is frankly all enough terms of good will where you can really get something done, whether its tax reform or entitlement reform, looking at immigration again. John boehner in addition has promised to get one of these five things through, whether its tax reform, immigration, education, spending. So i think this bodes very well at the high watermark of the mandate from the voters and so, look, i i think that things can only get better in washington because i dont think you can go much furtherer. Well, the election has to be over first and then well talk. Thanks to both of you. Hilary rosen, margaret hoover, i appreciate it. Still to come, wall street is betting on the republicans in the midterm. Well look at most of those in the banking and investment industry are donating more to the gop. Well talk more about that when we come back. Not to be focusing, again, on my moderate my goal was to finally get in shape. To severe chronic plaque psoriasis. So i finally made a decision to talk to my dermatologist about humira. Humira works inside my body to target and help block a specific source of inflammation that contributes to my symptoms. In clinical trials, most adults with moderate to Severe Plaque Psoriasis saw 75 skin clearance on humira. And the majority of people were clear or almost clear in just 4 months. Humira can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. Serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened; as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. Before treatment, get tested for tb. Tell your doctor if youve been to areas where certain fungal infections are common, and if youve had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections, or have flulike symptoms or sores. I thought itd be bigger. dad theres nothing i cant reach in my subaru. vo introducing the allnew subaru outback. Love. Its what makes a subaru,a subaru. It takes big bucks to run for office and this years Midterm Election could set records. Reporter these are important elections and the reason theyre so important is that the senate hangs in the balance. Right now democrats control the senate, republicans want to control the senate and that has made these very important elections very expensive. These things are going to cost 4 billion before were over. 4 billion. Thats a lot of money. Most of us cant wrap our heads around it. Its like bill gates money, right . So the kinds of things you could do with 4 billion . You could put 24,000 kids through k12 education. 4 billion is ten times more than the government has said theyre going to spend on ebola and you could build 100 Ebola Treatment Centers with that kind of money. So dark money, right . Sounds very sexy and it is. Its this is money they dont disclose who the donors are. Its secret money essentially. A lot of the krit oisks this kind of group say we dont know who these people are, they give unlimited donations and theyre only supporting one candidate. Theyre really just circumventing the Campaign Finance limits. Special interests, parties and candidates are dumping huge amounts of money into these elections because they want their team to control the senate on november 5. Chris frats reporting. Wall street is putting its midterm money on the republicans. According to a new report, a majority of political contributions from individuals and firms are going to gop candidates. Cnns Christine Romans is here to break it down for us. Good morning. Good morning. Remember it was wall street and the Investment Community that helped elect president obama remember . All of their money behind that candidate. How things have changed because they are betting on the republicans in these midterms. In fact, when you look at the individual donations of people who work in the banking and finance industry you can see 63 of that money is going to gop candidates. A total of 78 million and, according to the center for responsive politics, carol, thats a record high both percentage and raw dollars for a gop in a midterm. So two reasons here, i think, that the money is backing the gop here. One, either fairly or unfairly, wall street thinks it has been blamed for too many of the problems in the economy and too harshly treated in the wake of the financial crisis. But number two, i would say, carol, is that theyre betting who they think is the winning horse and thats really putting their money where they think theyre going to get more results. Three seconders well be watching, financials, energy, industrials. Those are the three seen benefitting most from republicans controlling the senate and the house so youre seeing individuals in those sectors funneling their money toward gop candidates. Interesting. Christine romans, many thanks as always. Still to come in the newsroom, he really knows how to get our undivided attention.
