That takes your temperature. I know youre trying to dig up more information on this. Elizabeth cohen reporting live from dallas. The fbi makes a bold and unusual move and asks you and your neighbors do you know this isis terrorist hiding behind a mask . In a gruesome propaganda tape, this man appears to execute captured syrian soldiers who are unarmed. Heres why the fbi is now involved. This man sounds like he could be american so now the feds are asking you to listen carefully whotohis whole message which is in both english and in arabic. Heres a sample. [ speaking arabic ] were here in the 17th Division Military base just outside the city with the soldiers of bashar. You can see them now digging their own graves in the very place where they were stationed. The very place where they were stationed terrorizing the muslims in raqqa. That will be carried out on the same soldiers by the brothers from the mujahadeen that captured them and behind them you can see the officers residence filled with bullet holes and artillery shells from the islamic state. This is the end of every one that we get ahold of. This is the end that they face. We must stop fighting and turn our guns towards the muslims. They lie. We are the harshest wars that they fought and the flames of war are only beginning to intensify. The fighting as just begun. Cnns brian todd is in washington with more on the investigation. Good morning. Good morning, carol. This man appears only at the very end of 55minute isis pr propaganda video but his presence is chilling and it resonates to washington. The man speaking perfect english, moves seamlessly from arabic to english. From his accent he could be american or canadian. Its his speech patterns and actions in the video which have the fbi and western intelligence agencies eager to hunt him down. He taunts the west. I spoke with analysts about why isis would put him in this video and about the horrifying act he appears to commit on camera. Clearly isis had a calculated step to be able to put this guy on camera. Why . Because he seems american, the message is aimed at a western audience and his intent is to, a, project fear to the United States, and, b, to instill and give the this sense of a projection of power. This is a north american, this is quite extraordinary because it would be the first time that a north american isis fighter has committed a war crime on camera. One big question here. Now that the fbi is firmly on this mans trail, did isis make a mistake by exposing this guy . By having him say too much on camera . Maybe do too much on camera . Analysts say maybe they didnt make a mistake in their eyes. The value for them is in propaganda and recruiting. If this man gets captured or killed, they have more westerners in their ranks. Carol . Brian todd reporting live from washington. Thank you so much. The fbi has put together this wanted poster and they want it plastered on every tv and commuter screen in america. Can you identify man in the mask . If you can and that seems rather difficult to me call 1800callfbi. Is it possible to identify this guy from this picture . I dont know. Lets talk about that. We have the head of outreach at the quill yum foundation, he joins us from london. Good morning, sir. Good morning. Is that poster plo eer remot helpful . I think the poster in itself plays a number of roles. One of is to get the American Muslim Community engaged in trying to play their bit in identifying people but what will give us more information is the voice, the voice patterns, the speech, the mannerisms, the eyes themselves may give something away because lets not forget there will be somebody who knows that they know somebody whos disappeared over the last few months whos gone to iraq and syria. This particular video is clearly made in Eastern Syria so its not new. Its certainly a few months old. But the voice patterns certainly may give us more than the poster itself. But its also very, very important that the American Muslim Community play their role. Because these guys now are focusing on a crew cider narrative. Weve just had a foiled beheading attack, four guys arrested yesterday in london. We had the same in australia, the same in norway. It may well be coming to the u. S. And they would differentiate between american muslims and nonmuslims so its important americans play their part in identifying anybody that may be out there. Id like to concentrate on the voice. Authorities are now saying he has a north american accent. What does that mean . Well, when they say north american theyre talking about either canada or the usa as opposed to southern america. Its the way that he the inflection in his voice, the tone, the way he pronounces certain things but its also interesting that the message has been altered so trying not to give too much away. Certainly from the arabic and certainly the pronunciation of the arabic as well, it tells us one of two things, either he is somebody who is from an arabic ethnic or gin or somebody whos learned his arabic whilst he was either throughout or from somebody before he went out there who is certainly an arab. I ask you this question because other experts ive talked to say he doesnt sound like hes north american, he sounds almost like a syrian, have been in syria who knows english very well. Well, experts are saying that hes a north american chap. Its his tone and the inflection, the way he says certain words that give a lot more away. But they could well be right and this is certainly a just as we had a difference of opinion on who is jihadi john and whether its one person or two people, whether its certain parts of london or whether his voice has been altered slightly, this we can tell has been clearly altered digitally and certainly majority of experts that ive spoken to whove listened to the voice, inflection, speech patterns, say hes sounding as if hes been educated in north america. His ethnic origin may be in dispute but certainly someone who has lived in north america for a period of time. Thank you so much for your insight, i appreciate it. Ill be right back. Faster than dcon. What will we do with all of these dead mice . Tomcat presents dead mouse theatre. Hey, ulfrik hey, agnar whats up with you . Funny you ask. Im actually here to pillage your town. The United States says it will not be overly concerned if kobani falls to isis, but it wont sit back and let it happen, exactly. Over the last two days, the u. S. Led coalition conducted six air strikes near the town on the syrian turkish border, destroying an isis armored personnel carrier and other vehicles plus two artillery weapons. 40 isis fighters were also reportedly killed. If isis does take control of kobani, it will control a section of land between its selfdeclared capital and turkey that encompasses 62 miles. Still, the u. S. Says the goal is not to save cities and towns but to go after isis senior leadership. No one wants to seiko banny fall, but our primary objective here is preventing isil from gaining a safe haven and our focus strategically is on, as i outlined, commandandcontrol structures, oil refineries, thats where were taking our military action. Arwa damon joins us flow the turkish syrian border. Arwa, how devastating would it be if kobani did fall . It would be for a number of different reasons, not just because of that strategic logistical route that would open up, but also because of the shear humanitarian catastrophe that has resulted because of isis push into this entire area that began well over two weeks ago. Kobani historically has been known as a city, a town of resistance for the kurds, they most certainly are going to fight until the very end but theres a lot of anger and frustration upon hearing that rhetoric coming out from the United States that kobani was not a priority because people will say to you, look, america came to the rescue, the coalition came to the rescue of certain cities in iraq, for example, baghdad, erbil, the dam in mosul, are that lives of those people there worth more than the lives of the syrian kurds here trying to beat isis back or the tens of thousands that have now refugees in neighboring turkey . That being said, though, there is a certain sense of appreciation over the last few days for that handful of air strikes that did take place because fighters inside kobani will tell you that that has to a certain degree forced isis to advance on foot. But that being said, they do want to see more take place. And theres also a lot of frustration that these air strikes did not take place before isis managed to get a foothold in kobani, carol. Kobani is right up against the turkish border. Turkey has expressed frustration with the United States as well. Why doesnt turkey enter the fray . Well, its quite complicated for turkey. Its military has been massed along the border and a lot of people are saying, look, just drive your tanks across it. Its not as simple as. That one has to takes into consideration the complex and tense relationship between the turks and the kurds. The Kurdish Fighting force at the very least wants to see turkey allow a corridor that would mean that they could get weapons, reply. Turkey not agreeing to that until the ywg, the Kurdish Fighting force, joins the free syrian army, the more moderate rebel fighting noors is largely being described. Turkey also wants to see a bigger operation, a more broader and defined policy before its going to join any sort of potential coalition. Turkey wants certain guarantees from the u. S. And its allies. They want a nofly zone, they want a buffer zone, they want to know that should they decide to take part in this coalition, the end game not going to just be decimating and defeating isis but also ultimately going after the regime itself that they view as being as big a threat as isis to the stability, not just of syria but of the entire region, carol. Arwa damon reporting live for us this morning. Thank you so much. Still to come in the newsroom, feel like that work week is dragging on forever . Oh, but now youve got some backup, although i dont know if it will mean anything, really. But the mexican billionaire tycoon carlos slim says the work week should actually be cut in half. Wow. Christine romans sat down and talked with mr. Slim. Hes doubling dun on it. He says it will happen, carol. He says were going to work smarter. Why are we working 40 hours, 50 hours, 60 hours five days a week. Listen to what he told me. I think that people should work three days. Three days. Maybe 11 hours. But not retire at 60 or 65. They should retire at 75. But you should have more time for you doing your life, not when you are 65 and retire but you will have more time for entertainment, for family, for quality of your life. For quality of life. What is that . Isnt that amazing. I dont know what that is. Talk about working until 75, because theres a lot of things you can still learn and offer into your 70s and how many of us know somebody who retired and said i dont want to retire and goes back to work. A lot of successful people are working longer. How many hours of work does mr. Slim work . I think he works a lot. The guy is always on duty. But he loves his work and i asked this, actually, the Fashion Designer cynthia rowley. I recently asked her do you believe you should lean in like Cheryl Sandberg says or lean back like arianna huffington. She said i work all the time because i love to work. Successful people work all the time. So you have this twospeed message. There are people going, going, going and super successful. Then some of the big thinkers are saying now, wait a minute, maybe we should be working more smartly. Heres the thing, not everyone aspires to be a multimillionaire or a super successful business person. Most people are happy with what 40,000 a year is the figure most polls show because they want to spend more time with their family so why shouldnt they work less . We should take the vacation were due because most people dont take the vacation theyre due, mainly because they dont feel like they have job security. Talk to richard branson, another billionaire who says, you know, you should have unlimited vacation. There are others who think we should have more part time jobs so people can double up on part time jobs. That means you have to have decent wages for the jobs that are there because you still have to pay the rent. No one is going to cut your hours of renttor gas you have to pay in your car. I think larry page, one of the google founders echoes similar things. Technology will alou us to change the way we work and to do Different Things with our time and that all of these guys are talking about it shows were moving in this direction where work will look different in the next generations than in the past. Ill believe it when i see it. Im like you, i work all the time because i like. It carol, you work half days, 12 hours everyday, right . [ laughter ] exactly. As do you. Takes one to know one. Christine romans, thanks so much. You can see christines full interview with tycoon carlos slim on cnn monday at 2 00 p. M. Eastern on saturday. In real life, collins is the target of an ongoing child molestation from an alleged incident 40 years ago in new york city. A Law Enforcement source telling cnn a woman came forward in 2012 saying collins forced her to touch him inappropriately when she was 14, but no charges were ever filed. But the investigation came to light tuesday after tmz released an audiotape where it says collins made incriminating statements. According to tmz, the recording was made by collins estranged wife faye grant during a counseling session two years ago. Cnn was unable to confirm whether the recording is, indeed, collins voice or whether the recording was edi d edited. The nypd would not confirm or denied the heard the recordings. His estranged wife, faye grant told e news i woke up today to learn an extremely private recording i handed over to the authorities in 2012 per their request in connection with a criminal investigation was recently disseminated to the press. I had no involvement whatsoever to w the release of the tape to the media. For the past two years, the couple has been involved in a contentious divorce case. Cnn obtained documents from the proceedings that began in 2012. In court documents, faye grant alleges her husband had been engaged in a longterm pattern of sexually molesting children and that he had admitted that he had sexually molested three underage girls over a decade ago. In the documents, collins does not specifically address the claims, but he made a reference to it saying this is really an attempt to extort concessions in a settlement. In the court documents, his wife said she reported the allegations to the nypd and the Los Angeles Police department because she feared she could face civil and criminal liability for not reporting on colli collins. In 2012, the Los Angeles Police department looked into the case but said it was closed when no victim came forward and no Police Report was filed. Since the allegations emerged tuesday, collins has been let go from his role in the current movie production of ted 2. He has also resigned from the Screen Actors Guild national board. Cnn has reached out to collins and his representatives and they have not returned our calls. Theyre coming up. You know, the midterms. Republicans can take control of the senate. Democrats could become oh, i dont know, irrelevant. I can see you yawning. Mtv is hoping this will wake you up long enough to cast a ballot. Rock the vote, rock the vote turn out for what . Turn out for what . Im darren and im turning out for education. Im turning out for marriage equality. Im turning out for so lena dunham, if she doesnt do it for you, i get it. The wall street journal illustrates the vote hear laze going on in this country in a cool graph. Less than 40 of independent voters give a hoot about the midterms. Republicans care the most, but thats not saying much because only 55 of them actually care. So try to stay awake while we talk more about this. Lets bring in cnn political commentator [ laughter ] and democrat hilary rosen, also a cnn political commentator. Welcome to both of you. Good to see you, carol. Nice to see you, too. So the wall street journal also points out that in 1994, voters were upset over the direction of the country and democrats lost the house. They actually went out to vote. In 2006 voters were upset over the war and democrats returned to power. In 2010, voters were upset about the economy and the tea party was born. This year, help me out, hillary, what are voters passionate about . The thing voters are most passionate about i dont think they feel slyke going get resolved in this election which is the gridlock facing washington. I think what so the strategy is how do you keep people focused on the issues you know that they care about and see whats at stake in the election . So for women particularly keeping democrats in control of the senate means keeping guaranteed contraceptive health care, keeping the right to choose, keeping help for families and children. For young people its the environment, its things like marriage equality. For seniors its things like social security. So what you see now in so many respects is sort of the most technical election that weve had in years. Technical election. Boy, that inspires passion among voters. Well, youre targeting what people care most about and with real tactics that may work. I dont know. Alex, even senator lindsey graham, who is cruising to a victory, isnt sure what victory will mean these midterm elections. He says there is no mandate other than we dont like the other guy. Well, its a bigger problem than that. Hes right. Carol, would you go out shopping for products that didnt work . The answer is no. And america looks at washington, it doesnt work. All these promises, hilary went through a nice list, republicans have a list, too, but nothing gets done. Washington is dysfunctional, its the v. A. , the irs, they cant control spending, health scare a disaster. So when you look at all of that, this is the plague on washington election. If voters could vote not to send anybody back, turnout would be about 150 . I agree with you, alex. Hilary, i posture more than one american is wondering why we even need congress. They dont do anything anyway so why waste a vote . And when they do something itser theable. Heres an interesting thing. You showed a rock the vote video and encouraged people to go to rockthevote. Com and look at other cool rock the vote commercials that say, for instance, if you care about the environment that the Oil Companies are getting their vote out. If you care about womens right to choose, well the anti guys are getting their vote out so in some respects its negative reinforcement but it sort of forces you to Pay Attention in a way you might not otherwise. Does it . Alex, i watched the rock the vote i didnt do owe. There were no names of candidates mentioned. It was all these issues and i just dont nope its because we hate them all. Americans have figured out the emperor has no clothes. All these political promises end up meaning nothing. As a matter of fact, often the opposite. Jobs plans, growth plans, all of that. At some point were headed for a big change and that is getting money and power out of washington, growing the economy not o teld way top down politically and artificially from washington. Those days are over. We know thats behind us. Its time for a big change from both parties. Grow the economy bottom up naturally, organically. Get power out of the place that doesnt work, move power closer to where our needs and problems are and guess what . Youll get voters engaged again. I think alex is right so it will be interesting to see what kind of voter turnout we have. Dont forget, its not Just Congress up for election. There are state elections, city council elections, mayorals all over the country. And so to the extent you can devolve power into some communities where you might feel like youve got a more say, well see where turnout is in those areas. It will be interesting. Its not just voters who are disinterested, look at president obama, hes practically retired. You had to get one in. Good job. Alex castellanos, hilary rosen, thanks to you both. I appreciate it. It is putting a hold on samesex marriage in idaho. The nations highest court is halting a Lower Court Ruling that would have allowed samesex marriages to take place. A u. S. Justice Anthony Kennedy is giving samesex marriage supporters until tomorrow to respond, so what does all of this mean because i know what youre saying, didnt the u. S. Supreme court punt on this issue like just yesterday . Law professor gloria actually constitutional law professor at john jay, Gloria Brown Marshall joins us. Also do we have Jeffrey Toobin with us as well . Im sorry, we do have Jeffrey Toobin . I want to go to you first, jeffrey no toobin. Okay. I got it now, gloria, im glad youre with me. Thank you so much for joining me. Explain this to us. Why is the u. S. Supreme court intervening now . Well, the u. S. Supreme court is receiving cases pro and against gay marriage in a particular state and what the Supreme Court is saying now is that the idaho law was one that wasnt before and now it is. Its giving the other side time to address the issues that has been raised by its denial of grants earlier this week. So is this unusual for the high court to intervene on an emergency basis. Well, the High Court Intervenes on emergency basis all the time, we just dont hear about it. This is a very controversial case so were hearing about it as it goes up through the court. We were watching these cases across the country approaching the court through the appellate system, whether through the state court system or federal court system and these states for and against are waiting for the Supreme Court to take one of the cases and in taking one of those cases address the issue the rest of the states have on their dockets as well, whether or not the states can control samesex marriage. When we go back last year and we were discussing this issue of samesex marriage, the states case that went before the court was one on the a procedural issue that the court did not address. It was whether or not the parties were in a position to bring the case before the court in the first place, whether or not they had standing. That procedural issue, the court said basically that the parties didnt have standing but it didnt reach the merits of the case. So now we have all these state cases that are meritbased going before the court and the court is basically saying were not taking any of these cases right now, but that doesnt prevent grow asking. So they have to give each side a chance to raise their points. So samesex couples were just celebrating yesterday. What should nay make of this today . Well, this is definitely idaho and its not the court is not saying all of our other decisions all of the decisions we made on monday in not granting for those other cases are would not be important to them or not justified in some way, dont forget about what we did on monday but were looking particularly at the idaho situation. Gloria brownemarshall, thanks so much for your insight, i sure appreciate it. Ill be right back. When salesman alan ames books his room at laquinta. When i saw the show a year ago i said if i ever go back, i want to meet the person responsible for all of it so we went back and learned how to show was put together. Its cool. What other things can we look forward to . Thats it. Thats it . You appeared in a wet suit, that was enough for people. Are you not entertained . Theres a hair museum in kansas city. Theres a forager up in point reyes who no longer buys food but lives off the fat of the land, et cetera, et cetera. So im having a time. Well, i get to meet people who wake up kind of afflicted because the world is not exactly the way they want it and they march to the beat of a drum that rally only they can hear. And i just valls dug people like that. Theyre doing what theyre doing out of a passion and love for it and its a very, very broad pallet. Its not just jobs. Its vocation, avocation, bloody dogooders, insane collectors, mad scientists, inventor, entrepreneurs, all of them. People often ask me whos the most famous person ive ever interviewed. Its never a famous movie star. Well, its mike rowe now. But usually its typical americans doing amazing things. Quietly. Quietly, right. So we were in kansas not too long ago and we had finished what we had come for and we had some time so i go on facebook and i say im not far from the missouri line, tell me if theres nip in the zip code whos got do it if i should meet. 3,000 replies instantly and one of the top was a woman who runs a hair muse glum a strip mall not far from Harry Trumans house. Twitter has grown into a platform where millions of users can share and access realtime information in an instant. From reaction to the super bowl or pictures from the prodemocracy protests at hong kong however twitter itself is limited in the amount of information it can publicly reveal when it comes to government surveillance. Now twitter hopes to change that by taking the Justice Department to court over rules that expressly forbid the company from revealing the types or how many surveillance requests it gets from the government. Laurie segall is following it all. Good morning. Hey, carol. Its all about transparency. Google and microsoft have previously sued for the ability to show more requests but what they were able to get was theyre allowed to disclose very broad strokes. Theyre able to disclose if they received between 0 and 999 National Security requests. Thats just an example. So what twitter has said is thats not enough. We want to be more specific. Let me read you what they said me a statement. They said its our believe were entitled under the First Amendment to respond to our users concerns and the statement to the u. S. Government officials by providing information about the scope of the u. S. Government surveillance. We should be able to do this in a meaningful way rather than broad inexact ranges. So what theyre asking for, carol, is they want to report the number of requests and break it down into the specific types of requests. Right now theyre, have r very limited on what they can say. They took a transparency report to the government, the government said, hey, you cannot disclose us then they decided to sue, carol. Interesting. So what is the Justice Department saying about this . The Justice Department goes back to that lawsuit. They say that earlier in the year that they addressed similar concerns with previous companies. They go on to say they Work Together to provide broad information on government requests while protecting National Security. Its always about trying to find that balance but twitter has said you know what . Thats not enough. We need to be more specific and what we show and what our users are age to understand about the government. Laurie segall reporting for us this morning. Thanks so much. Thank you for joining me today. Im carol costello. this hour with berman and michaela starts now. Brand new measures to battle ebola. U. S. Airplaorts will start screening passengers perhaps as early as this weekend. Is that enough to keep the virus out of this country . We want you to listen to and look at this man. He speaks perfect english, certainly sounding a whole lot like hes from north america. The fbi wants your help to help catch him. And if you are a woman, you are not into sports. Huh . Really.
