Flippantly told the American People on thanksgiving that a Covid Vaccine would be delivered next week. But lets be clear, the fda hasnt even given emergency use authorization to any vaccine candidate, and the president then showed where his true priorities lie in sharing his successor, president elect joe biden, does not receive credit for a vaccine. Dont let him take credit for the vaccines, because the vaccines were me and i pushed people harder than theyve ever been pushed before. Cnns nick watt has more on where the vaccine stands in the face of surging cases and hospitalizations. Reporter americans were urged not to travel for the holiday. Millions did, anyway. We already have this massive surge across the country, and its sort of like pouring gasoline on that. Reporter that massive surge in numbers . Thanksgiving day more than 9 90,000 americans in the hospital with covid19, yet another alltime high. On average more than 1,500 deaths are now reported every day. And more than 100,000 new cases logged every day for 24 days straight. Heres how it works. When case counts rise, a couple weeks later, the death toll follows. So a couple weeks for now you do the math, and thats 3,000 to 4,000 deaths per day. Reporter those daily counts on death tolls will dip the next few days. Dont be fooled. Some states arent reporting. Over the holiday, the world, this country, not in a good place as we wait for a vaccine. The vaccines are being delivered literally, it will start next week and the week after. Reporter very unlikely. The fda hasnt even authorized a vaccine yet. Their Advisory Committee meets december 10, a decision could take days, even weeks. So likely late december, best case, for first shots in arms. The president is playing politics, still, even in defeat. The political theater absolutely has to stop. People are much more reluctant, Even Health Care workers. Im in the health care setting, and Health Care Workers are hesitant even though theyll be the First Priority group because of all this politicization of everything thats been going on. Reporter the u. S. Is closing in on 13 million confirmed covid19 infections, but a new cdc Study Suggests that between december and september, as many as 53 million americans might have been infected, 16 of the population. It sounds like a lot, but, say cdc researchers, this indicates that 84 of the population have not yet been infected so most of the country remains at risk. Black friday 2020, the trampling risk may be down, the infections, way up. I figure the earlier you go, the less crowd youll have to face, and i dont know about you, but i think im right. Reporter so we have seen spikes in cases after holidays in the past. July 4th, for example. So what can we all do to try and stop that happening after thanksgiving . Well, vermont has published some guidance. They say if you are traveling or you hold a multihouseheld gathering, you should get tested now and again in seven days, and if you had one of those big gatherings, you shouldnt send your kids to school next week. But, brooke, its going to be a couple weeks before we know whether thanksgiving really did pour gasoline on the surge that were already suffering. Brooke . Thats exactly right. Well wait in a couple of weeks as were about to be upon the next holiday. Nick watt, thank you for the broad look there. Joining me to discuss, senior scholar at Johns Hopkins University Center for health security. Dr. Dalja, thank you for coming on. Nice to have you. Thanks for having me. Lets go to the vaccine. The president is saying a vaccine will be ready next week or the week after, but the fda has not even issued an authorization yet. They have their meeting december 10. So, realistically, when do you think the first doses will be available . In the best case scenario, if everything goes perfectly, depending on when the committee is meeting, late december. Thats probably for Health Care Workers and a small amount of vaccine available. So its not something were going to see, i think, in the next couple weeks or so because of the fda process and how much data has to be sifted through to be able to issue, like you said, an emergency authorization. Given what you outlined, in december would be the first doses, especially given all the challenges distributing millions of doses of the vaccine. When do you think the majority of americans would actually have access to it . Probably mid2021 if everything goes perfectly. Remember, this is going to be a major logistical challenge, especially if the first vaccine is the Pfizer Vaccine that requires that extreme cold chain we have to keep intact, that negative degrees. We have to turn this vaccine into a vaccination. You saw that shopper at the very end masked in what seemed like more of an empty shopping mall. It is black friday and people will be shopping, and that is a good thing for the economy. At the same time, were in the midst of this pandemic, what advice do you have for all of us to stay safe and shop . You just have to remember that any activity that you do, the virus is going to be there alongside you. Its common sense precautions. Wearing a mask, trying to avoid the most crowded and congregated places, washing your hands a lot. Its going to minimize the risk that you have. The risk is never going to be zero until we have a vaccine, but when you do it, you still have to take the care and realize were living in a pandemic, and the actions you take has a direct impact of whether you acquire this or transmit the virus, and it also has an impact on your Community Hospital and the doctors and nurses that have to take care of people when they get sick. Its about being really careful in trying to reduce the harm this virus is causing. Dr. Adalja, there is a new cdc study that said from february to september, only one out of eight covid cases in the u. S. Was recognized and reported, one in eight. What does that tell you about the amount of testing thats needed Going Forward and just the accuracy of numbers of how many people have actually been sick . Many of us in this field have said from the very beginning that it was a gross underestimate, the number of confirmed cases. We knew that a virus like this that spreads efficiently through the respiratory route for which there is no population of immunity would have that h1n1 experience, and that populated 20 in a year. We knew this was a gross underestimate and we were miscounting. Even one of my patients i remember taking care of in the beginning of the pandemic, i knew there were Covid Patients i couldnt count because i couldnt get a test. We know this is a much higher burden than what weve seen reported in the official statistics. As im thinking about the big picture, and nick was reporting on this, and i know youve talked about this, we wont get an accurate assessment of the numbers after thanksgiving for another couple weeks. At that point well be deep in december on the cusp of other holidays and into wintertime. What is your advice to all of us just to mitigate any potential spread as the numbers will rise within our households and our communities . Like i said earlier, you have to remember that were in a pandemic and our actions do make a big difference. If you can try and limit your contacts, if youre at a big thanksgiving gathering where you saw there wasnt social distancing where multiple households were mixing, try to limit your contacts or quarantine, if possible. Get a test maybe seven days after to find out if you were exposed during that time period. Continue wearing a mask, social distance a lot, stay six feet apart. Unfortunately, people havent been doing that during the pandemic and thats why were in the situation we are now. There will be darker days ahead. This happened after the canadian pandemic, and this is something we can only expect as we move closer to christmas. Dr. Adalja, thank you very much. Yet another rejection for President Trumps legal team and its failing effort to prove this election was rigged. An Appeals Court ruling the claims in pennsylvania. The opinion includes a straightforward dismantling fortunate trump teams central claim, quote, calling an election unfair does not make it so. Charges require specific allegations and then proof. We have neither here, end quote. The Court Rejection is unlikely to sway this president. Instead, look to the president s morning tweet just to get a sense of his current frame of mind, to borrow from u2, hes stuck in a moment and now cant get out of it. The president made a thanksgiving promise, albeit, a hesitant one, to uphold american democracy. If the gsa does say president elect biden is the president , will you leave this building . Certainly i will. Certainly i will. You know that. But i think there will be other things coming. He will be leaving office if he can provide that his 80,000 votes were not fraudulent. Ryan, good to see you. Thanks for being on with me. I guess the first question is why. Why does the president keep on with this . Why does the president keep living in fiction and not reality . Why does the president not want to give up power . Reporter like a lot of issues, he retreats a little bit, but the main thrust of what hes been saying since Election Night is the same. And it is all about the fact that he lost. He knows he lost, but he wants to leave office with a by discrediting joe bidens win, and especially if he wants to run for president again in 2024 by casting a shadow of doubt over the election. And unfortunately a lot of his supporters do have doubts because hes thrown out so many claims, all of which have been discredit discredited, that he has succeeded in getting a lot of his people believe something went wrong, that it was fraudulent. He doesnt want to be defined as a loser, so he needs a handy excuse, almost psychologically, and i think also in the eyes of history or at least for the historians who are on the right with him that this was somehow illegitimate. Thats what this is all about. I dont think thats shocking, brooke. I think whats shocking is how many people in our political culture have been willing to enable it. Go along with it. Yep. Yep. Exactly. The president , ryan lizza, also announced he will go to georgia. Hell hold a rally in georgia to help drive the turnout in the two senate races there. But hes also telling Republican Voters that georgias entire system is fraudulent. So my question to you is, are republicans in the state worried that the president may actually depress turnout . Reporter yeah, we saw this in the november 3rd election where he spent so much time trashing mailin balloting that in a lot of states, especially states where republicans have good mailin balloting programs, they were really worried about this. Arizona, for example, has done mailin balloting since the 90s. Ji i was just there and republicans were freaking out about the mixed messages. He lost that state, of course. If youre a Republican Trump supporter and youre being told these elections are fraudulent, why bother . So hes had to correct that. He tweeted that, oh, its okay. You have to prove them wrong, go to the polls. Its going to be a very interesting race, because right now a lot of these senate races have correlated pretty nicely with the president ial races. That is, the party thats winning the president in these states are also winning the senate seats. So georgia could be could end up being the one exception, but if it goes with the winner has a shot here, the democrats have a shot here having proved in a president ial election that they can pick it off. Ryan lizza, thank you very much. Thanks, brooke. Thank you. Iran is vowing revenge today after its top Nuclear Scientist is assassinated after being attacked with an explosion amidst gunfire. This all coming after reports that iran has upped its production of titanium. What are you hearing out of iran . Reporter brooke, this is not a household name in the united states, but he is someone that u. S. Officials have had their eyes on for quite some time, the iranian officials saying he was killed in an assassination in a vehicle just east of tehran. They say it was explosives combined with gunfire that led to his death today. Iran is blatantly blaming israel for these alleged attacks and calling it an act of terror. Israel not saying anything, but officials i spoke to, including experts on the matter, say this attack does bear a lot of hall marks of the Israeli Attack just based on its sophistication alone. Officials themselves are being quite cagey about it due to the sensitive nature. Iran seeing this as a provocation in the u. S. Saying theyre not going to dip their toe in any of this, especially in a lame duck period where President Trump has less than two months ago. Brooke, as many things in life, there are also politics at play and they said just this month iran has 12 times the amount of enriched uranium produced. President trump withdrew from that israel accord, and the uae and the accord say it makes iran more emboldened them for these pursuits, but withdrawing from the accord is what emboldened them in the first place. President trump saying he is going to talk about the iran accord again. They are trying to take their shots because they probably cant get away with this once biden comes into play. Brooke . With coronavirus cases surging in the u. S. , brick and mortar retailers are bracing for a grim weekend in sales as more people buy online. Allison is at a mall in new york. Alison . Im at the second biggest mall in the new york city metro area, and normally on a black friday, you would not be able to see this hallway. Of course, here it is pretty darn empty. Same with the escalator, its been practically empty all day. For black friday, black friday has kind of been waning over the past few years, even before the pandemic. A lot of stores have pushed customers to shop online. Theyve been offering black friday deals over the span of a week, so retailers really have their work cut out for them, especially with the coronavirus pandemic accelerating that trend. Many retailers have been pushing customers even more so to go online and not just in one week but the span of a few months, october, november and december, to do their Holiday Shopping online just to keep the crowds away. Just in case, retailers are ready for those crowds. They have their safety protocols in place at abercrombie fitch, the stickers on the floor keeping customers six feet apart and limiting the number of people inside the store once theyre in there, this one limiting to 65. Because of the struggling economy and millions of americans who are struggling, america is optimistic about how Holiday Shopping will turn out this year, saying sales may be 3 to 5 higher than last year. Brooke . Alison, thank you for showing us around the mall and just how empty it is. For more to the kickoff of the holiday buying season, lets bring in vanessa kavich. Its crazy the dichotomy is soaring, but when you talk to americans, they dont feel that. I know youve been talking to people in charge of local food banks. What are they sharing with you . Wall street and main street has been on different planes. You see the wall street hitting new highs while food banks have very long lines. There are millions of americans sitting at home unemployed right now, and theyre not trading in the stock market so theyre not reaping those benefits. Were hearing from feeding america, one of the largest hunger groups in the united states, says 50 million americans will be in need of help this year. List ton the ceo about what the need will be. Unfortunately, the need continues. We also have an estimate that over the course of the next 12 months that the gap between what we have and what our neighbors are going to need is about 8 billion meals. We know we can do this. But were going to need help. And you just hear that number, 8 billion meals that will be needed, and one way theyll get that is through the federal government. The federal government has provided some federal stimulus for these food banks, but brooke, theyre saying theyll need a lot more than that in the months to come. I just remember a conversation with the houston mayor who was helping get 20,000 meals out to folks yesterday, and he was saying, brooke, there were so many people there who couldnt even take the turkey because they no longer had the apartment and the kitchen in which to cook it. That is where we are right now. Vanessa, thank you for sharing that. Many Business Owners saying they will mandate that their workers get the Coronavirus Vaccine when it becomes available. A Restaurant Owner in Washington State says she will make the covid19 vaccine a requirement for her employees, and she just made the announcement that her restaurant would not be open for diners until there is a vaccine. Now she is making the vaccine mandatory a must for anyone who wants to work for her. And now we have the Restaurant Owner and a lawyer specializing in the vaccine. Thank you for joining us. Were about to see a lot of this. Holly, starting with you. I know you already have been taking precautions with your staff, but why make them get the vaccine . Thanks for having me on. You know, the decision while ive known for a while what i think we will do, it really has been informed by my staff. And so we had a few weeks of learning about covid and ramping up and trying to learn protocols, put them in place where we closed down and become a pickuponly restaurant. Ive really come to know my staff over the last several months. What has become clear is that for the sake of health and safety for my team, the tightness has felt better. So we said when it comes to flu season, everyone must get the flu shot. That seemed important, because how could we go into this false time if people started to get the flu that the symptoms would look like covid, and just the chaos that would start in the team. And so my job, i think, when it comes down to it, is to provide a safe Work Environment and also a safe place for my guests to come. Im a fine dining restaurant, people spend three hours or more with us, and all the science, all the data tells me thats not safe. So vaccines, especially the effectiveness of what were hearing about with the pfizer and the moderna vaccines, seem so wonderful, so promising. Let me jump in, because i can feel the thought bubbles of people watching thinking, well, my employer better not make me take a vaccine, or i dont want to even have to take a flu shot. But at the same time, i can understand its their choice whether they want to work with you. Legally speaking, dora, let me pivot to you. Can holly, can other employers, i know there will be more, make this mandatory, and what exceptions, if any, do employers have . First of all, an employer like holly can name imposed health and safety requirements in the workplace and ask employees to be vaccinated as a requirement. Yes, she can, and as she pointed out, its a balance between people who want to get the vaccine or who dont want to and people who want a safe workplace. As you pointed out, there are also exceptions and things that may limit their ability to be able to do that, and four of them are relevant here. First, these vaccines will first be approved from a user organizati authorization, and a person has to address whether they can refuse the vaccine and what are the consequences. So the secretary will have to put in rules on whether or not you can mandate it. Thats one thing. If i may jump in, because i want to go back to holly and just listen to the exceptions. Holly you said earlier, your decision was informed by your staff, and im wondering, does that mean your staff is in favor of this . And what if you have a beloved employee who says, i love working at this fine dining establishment, i do not want this vaccine . Would you make an exception . The first thing i will tell everyone is that covid has taught me that even when i believe ive worked it all out and i know what i believe. When things really happen, the nuances are maybe surprising. So no ultimatums in that way. Yes, my staff, everyone ive talked to, we have a lot of furloughed staff, weve had the conversation. Everyone in the current staff believes its the right thing, kind of, in our immediate community. But if someone has you know, i will definitely work with people. What ive learned through this, though, is that the staff that stays, there may be a revolt. You know, it may be that the staff is kind of dictating the culture to some degree. I can imagine that happening. If that makes sense. Sure. Sure. The staff obviously really matters. You need them to feed the mouths and work for you. Dora, final thought from you on all of this. I think holly is giving us a nice view of the fact that its really a workplace culture, especially in smaller places, and theres going to be a lot of negotiation. Just remember that there are limits from a federal discrimination law as well in some cases. People with medical conditions may be prevented from a vaccination and some people with religious beliefs. I can imagine in airlines, schools, this will be a thing, for lack of a better phrase, when we want to be well and survivor the pandemic. Holly and dora, thank you very much. Good luck to you and stay well. The experts warned college kids not to come home for the holidays, but many of them had no choice and now face more uncertainty over when they can return to campus. Experts fear College Students spread the virus to family members at home, but many had no choice but to take their chances. Bianna golodryga has the story. Reporter university of michigan sophomore elliott boz took an extra test before leaving campus and reuniting with his family in san mateo, california for thanksgiving. A negative covid test. We first met elliott on campus last week. My family is at home, and grandparents are back, so i want to make sure that im cleared before i come back home. Reporter despite a late plea from the cdc advising people to stay put, hes one of the hundreds of thousands of College Students who traveled home for the holiday, because staying put wasnt an option. The university of michigan and many other universities nationwide ended all inperson classes for the semester this week. I think everybody is kind of in the same situation. Im not unique in any way in that sense, its just an extra level of thoughtfulness. So i had to go out of my way, get the test, be diligent about wearing a mask, washing my hands and so on. Reporter these are the scenes Health Experts desperately wanted to avoid. Some 4. 8 million travel erers passing through tsa checkpoints since the cdc guidelines came out last week. Its pretty tough, because i think students around the country are might be thinking differently about this, and everybody wants to see their family. So i think in terms of travel, everybody is trying to do their best about how to travel safely. Reporter universities across the country set their own covid testing protocol before students left campus. There are no federal guidelines in place, leaving Health Officials frustrated. Young asymptomatic students, the silent superspreaders, have a responsibility to ensure they dont unleash ticking time bombs into airports and the dinner table. Reporter elliotts father mike said hes okay with his son coming home. Hes a responsible kid, and he has testing, so that alleviates concerns. Overall there is always a risk, but the risk is minimized as much as possible. Reporter elliotts parents and his 81yearold grandparents will be together this thanksgivi thanksgiving. But his older brother sura, a College Student in canada, will not be coming home from school. This will probably be a little bittersweet having your younger son home, but the whole family cant be together. We had other family members who were wanting to come and theyre not coming anymore because of the spike in covid. So its not just my older son, its other family members. Reporter its exactly the kind of holiday precautions dr. Fauci and other experts are pleading with americans to make. To the extent possible, keep the gatherings, the indoor gatherings, as small as you possibly can. We all know how difficult that is, because this is such a beautiful traditional holiday, but by making that sacrifice, youre going to prevent people from getting infected. Reporter sound advice that will extend far beyond thanksgiving for families with College Students home for the rest of the year. In terms of the grandparents, its really being thoughtful about when i see them and how i see them, talking with them, sitting apart or when giving them a hug, just being thoughtful. We just saw the clip focuses on Prep School Students and prisoners and the second one focuses on this super intense retreat for boys in crisis. Why did you want to start off the season focusing on young men . Well, brooke, we didnt intend for these two episodes to run backtoback but in many ways they kind of go together. They explore totally different worlds. But we all can probably recognize the fact that there are a lot of young men and boys who are struggling right now and the thread through both of these episodes is really giving young men permission to feel and to express emotion. You know . Young people are going through so much right now. I think its a little bit easier for girls because they are just naturally more communicative. We explore these two different environments where these young men with given that permission and its pretty remarkable what transpires.
