Public, the declining use of mask wearing is a key reason for the higher projections. So, where with we now . More than a thousand americans died yesterday of covid. The Third Straight day of a thousand deaths or more. The u. S. Is still averaging about 40,000 new cases a day that dr. Fauci calls unacceptedly high going into the fall and in the flu season and speaking today from the oval office, President Trump said that he is optimistic a vaccine is, quote, going to be announced very soon. This is all happening as multiple sources tell cnn that the president is ramping up pressure on the fda to deliver a good news about a Coronavirus Vaccine before election day. So lets start with Kaitlan Collins over at white house. And what are you hearing about the pressure that the president is putting on these federal officials over a vaccine . Reporter well, brooke, we know he wants one and sooner rather than later. Before election day is when the president is looking at. And that means that the fda is now in the president s crosshairs. Because youve seen it shift throughout the pandemic, what the president has been focusing on. Right now it is the fda and this vaccine. And that means the fda commissioner is now in the hot seat because there are a lot of questions about the approval process for a vaccine and whether or not they would grant some kind of emergency use authorization like weve seen them do with hydroxychloroquine, something that the president pushed for and can val essent plasma. With hydroxychloroquine it had to be rescinded by the fda later on, plasma is still out. Though we did see the commissioner apologize for how he framed that announcement and now the question comes down to whether or not we could see one with a vaccine. It is very clear that the president wants one and he is accused people at the fda of deliberately delaying progress because they in the president s mind they think he wants to hurt his chances of being reelected. And look at how hes explaining what you wants this time line to look like. I think the vac vcines are going to be announced very soon and youre going to see Great Companies announcing. I spoke with pfizer today. It will be delivered before the end of year but it might even be delivered before the end of october. How do you like that . Reporter now dr. Hahn who leads the fda has said time and time again hes making decisions based on data, not on politics. But sources have described the environment of what it is like to have this fda commissioner, brooke, coming into the white house and meeting with the president and there is certain among other medical experts inside of this administration that he could bend to the political will of the president. What youre seeing the president say publicly about this time line here. And so basically what everyone is watching over the next sef several weeks are the decisions that the fda commissioner is making and what hes making them based on. So much of this politics, Public Health. Kaitlan, thank you for that. I want to go back to that dire prediction from the ihme and bring in dr. Celine gounder, the commissioner of health in new york city and a cnn medical analyst. Good to have you back. On this model, i know it is one of the more aggressive ones out there, just in terms of projections. But again, it predicts that the death rate could reach nearly 3,000 a day. A day. By december. And researchers say partly because of the declining vigilance of the public, folks not wearing Face Coverings. What do you make of those numbers . I think the important thing to remember, brooke, is that no model is perfect. It is sort of like trying to place chess against a chess grand master, how many moves ahead could you predict. And things will change in the interim. So i think where models are helpful is in helping us figure out how much do certain interventions impact transmission and deaths. And clearly the ihme model does show if you were to have 95 of the population wearing masks, aas opposed to the 50 wearing them now, you could half the death rate between now and december. So the message is we all need to go back to wearing masks. Especially into the fall and the flu season as weve talked. It is a doublewhammy. The other thing from the model, it claims that the controversial c concept of herd immunity, that is allowing everyone who has relatively healthy to get sick with the hopes of boosting immunity and no further Government Intervention is taking from now through the end of the year and theyre saying that the death toll could increase in 620,000. Does that put this notion of herd immunity here in the u. S. To rest . I certainly hope it does. Basically what theyre saying it lets let the virus run wildfire throughout the population and come what may and hopefully at the end of the day well have enough immunity that we wont have further spread. Well at that point, youve already had millions of deaths from the disease. Is that really, is that cure, quote unquote, worth the cost. I would argue no. The thing that you have been arguing and so many scientists, doctors, we have to wear a Face Covering and the mask and that is one of the clear points from the ihme report. But President Trump, he is not interested in promoting mask wearing. Listen to what he said yesterday talking about joe biden. Did you ever see a man that likes a mask as much as him . And then he makes a speech and a lot of times he has it hanging down. Because it gives him a feeling of security. If i were a psychiatrist, right. No, id say, id say this guys got some big issues. Again, it is what the president is saying but it is also you hear the reaction in the crowd, the laughter and the cheering how not enough people are listening to the scientists but when you heard the president of the United States say that, what did you think . I think, to me, anybody who would let vanity get in the way of their health and protecting the health of their family and friends and community, that is weakness, that kind of vanity. And that has me really concerned. I think we all need to be step up and maybe it is a little bit inconvenient but that is the strong thing to do on behalf of our station right now. Last quick question on the vaccine. The president would like to have one by election day. He was mentioning hoping the end of october. Hes cranked up the pressure on his Administration Health officials, listen, Everyone Wants this and they want it fast. But how will we know its safe . We have to wait until phase three trials are completed. Showing this vaccine as safe and effective. Im going to be in that number one Priority Group lining up for a vaccine but i will not roll up my sleeve to get it even if i can, if it is not proven safe and effective. Dr. Gounder, thank you so much. And speaking of vaccines, according to the lancet medical journal, russian vaccine generated a immune response in test subjects. But while this is promising, but the sample size was small and it has not been put through phase three trials yesterday. Elizabeth cohen is with me now and how significant is this, do you think . Brooke, its just as rell van when pfizer and astra zeneca came out with data. It is encouraging and it might work. It might also fail. We dont know. As you said, it needs go through the phase three trials with tens of thousands of people and that is what theyre starting now. Lets take a look at what they published in the lancet today. The russian Vaccine Company said they had 76 study subjects. All developed neutralizing antibodies, and theoretically, and i stress the word, should fight off the virus that caused covid19. Half of then got a fever and that usually in this trial the fever is short lived and unpleasant for a little while but it is still not a fun thing. I sort of wonder how will people take it when they find out that people getting this vaccine half of them are getting sick and will it make them scared. Well have to wait and see. Encouraging results but it doesnt mean that the vaccine works. Thank you very much, Elizabeth Cohen in atlanta. Coming up, the disturbing new report where reportedly President Trump called fallen u. President trump who often publicly claims that he supports u. S. Men and women in uniform is reportedly calling some of those same troops losers and suckers behind their backs. This is just one of the stunning allegations of this new piece of journalism in the atlantic. It recounts a canceled 2018 trip to an American Cemetery near paris. President trump claimed it was due to rain but four unanimous sources tell atlantic editor in chief Jeffrey Goldberg that the reason was much different. In a conversation with senior Staff Members on morning of the scheduled visit, trump said why should guy to that cemetery, it is filled with losers. And he referred to the 1800 marines who lost their lives at belleau wood as suckers for getting killed. Today the president forcefully denied this story. No, it is fake story written by a magazine that was probably not going to be around much longer. But it was a totally fake story and that was confirmed by many people who were actually there. It was a terrible thing that somebody could say those kind of things and especially to me because ive done more for the military than almost anybody else. No, there is nobody that considers the military and especially people that have given their lives in the military, to me theyre heroes. Also moments ago, trumps 2020 rival former Vice President joe biden whose late son beau was a veteran of the iraq war blasted the president saying hes not fit to be commanderinchief. Let me be real clear, when my son in an assistant u. S. Attorney and he volunteered to go to kosovo as a civilian, he wasnt a sucker. When my son volunteered and joined the United States military as the attorney general, and went to iraq for a year and won the bronze star and other accommodations, he wasnt a sucker. The service men and women he served with, particularly those that did not come home, were not losers. If these statements are true, the president should humbly apologize to every gold star mother and father, every Blue Star Family that hes denigrated and insulted. We should note that cnn has not independently confirmed the report. David le pen is vp of communications for the Bipartisan Policy Center and served in the United States marine corp with john kelly, the president s former chief of staff. So welcome, david, and thank you so much for your service. Good to have you on. Thank you, brooke. Thanks for having me. I should point out, this article details an exchange between trump and kelly and well get to that in just a moment. But first just as a veteran, what was your reaction when you read this . My first reaction, and the one i still have today, is disgust. That anyone would make comments like that, much less the commanderinchief of the armed forces. But at the same time, i wasnt particularly surprised by them because this is consistent with things that the president has said and done throughout his tenure. When you read the piece and the article where Jeffrey Goldberg details this trip to arlington with President Trump and general kelly and this is memorial day 2017, this is where they visited section 60, this is the section of arlington where general kellys son robert is buried. And so sources told the atlantic that the president said to kelly, as they were there standing over his sons grave, the quote from the president was, i dont get it, what was in it for them . General kelly didnt comment for the article. My question to you, david, did he ever mention this incident to you or did he ever speak about the president s comments on the military . He didnt around me. Again, i dont know if hes spoken to others. I was serving as secretary kelly at that point on memorial day 2017 as his spokesperson at the department of homeland security. But i wasnt with him that day at Arlington National cemetery so i dont have direct knowledge of that exchange. But, again, it is not inconsistent from what weve heard the president say and do in the past. Has he ever spoken to you, just in general, about the president s views on our nations military . No, he hasnt. General kelly or secretary kelly has not. Jeffrey goldberg was on cnn this morning talking about this article and that his sources prefer to stay off the record because, quote, they dont want to be inundated with angry tweets and all of the rest. We are two months out from an election and goldberg described the sources as those with firsthand knowledge and, david, do these people owe it to the nation, these people who are sourced in this piece, do they owe it to the nation and their fellow Service Members to go public with something as important as this . I think it is important for them to do it. But every individual has to make that personal choice of where that line is for them. The fact that theyve spoken out even anonymously is still important. I have no reason to distrust what Jeff Goldberg has reported here. And there is several sources. It would be helpful if individuals came out but i could understand as vindictive as the president has been in the past, for them to be cautious about putting their name on things and getting themselves dragged through the mud. Thinking ahead to this election and you think back to the leadup of 2016, then candidate trump said that john mccain wasnt a war hero because he was captured and mocked the grieving parents of purple hart recipient julie khan and after a staunch defender of the nations troops, so even from President Trump were to apologize, which is what biden calling for, would it fall on deaf ears with the trump base . It is hard to say, brooke. I think, as you said, if you go back to candidate trump and some of the things that he said, and as i mentioned before, hes the president has done that over and over again. From interfering in the gallagher case and parting war criminals leaving our allies the kurds in syria, sending u. S. Mill troops to the border and any number of things that over time have added up so one or two things that he may have done or said three and a half or four years ago have only been added upon. So people now have to consider that entire track record. And again, it is consistent. It is not as if there is a oneoff, he made one offhand remark and it is consistent over time. And so i think that will damage him in the eyes of the veterans and those in the military. Certainly not everyone. But enough. David la pen, thank you, sir. Thank you. The situation on College Campuses seems to be going from bad to worse with all of the covid19 cases on rise. There are now more than 27,000 infections at colleges and universities and at least 40 states. As officials scramble to mitigate the outbreak among students and staff, schools with athletes and sports leagues are under greeter pressure to restart the season safely. Today there is some hope for the pac12 fall football season. They Just Announced a partnership with Quidel Corporation, a manufacturer of daily tests for the athletes, that could mean a return to football. Joining me ceo of Quidel CorporationDouglas Bryant so welcome. Thanks, brook. Larry let me start with you. I read a piece where you said this is game changing. How do you mean and when do you think pac12 football could return . Well it is a break through for us because quidel could give us access to the rapid result point of care tests which will allow us to daily test football players, mens and Womens Basketball student tlathletes s we could have a high degree of confidence anyone does not have and could not spread the virus. Given the prevalence in our communities and campuses that woof talked about, weve been proceeding with an abundance and caution and not wanted to go forward with the season if we thought by asking student athletes to compete in practice with one another they would be encouraging spread amongst the teams. So no one has been able to get the daily testing with immediate results like this. Thanks in part to quidel which also will include research to prove out this algorithm and prove that daling testing with this antibody test, were hopeful that our research will help the school return to work and getting our economy back to normal and that is what our universities are all about. Lets hope so. We all want that. But that dove tails into my question for doug. Everybody wants fall ball. But weve seen inadequatesy in testing so how you could guarantee your testing is safe. First, let me start by saying were particularly proud to be involved with the pac12 in this project which in addition to doing what we can to help the student athletes there, were also using as the largest asymptomatic population trial to date and i think that is going to be helpful in determining when and if we could get other folks throughout the country back to work. We think it is going to be a net benefit to the economy and that is why were engaging, mainly because we think that the research is going to be so valuable. These tests are highly accurate. They have been demonstrated in trials that they have a high positive predictive agreement with pcr testing. And the fact that were doing testing so frequently, actually gives us a lot of confidence that were going to be able to follow these and make sure that we could prevent those folks from attending practice or playing if they have become infected. Larry, to you, just overseeing, thinking about the pac12, lets say that the testing is flawless, i know you have other hurdles. I ras reading, you have the six schools, four in california, two in oregon who dont have the approval for the contact practice right now. So what do you do about that . Well this this breakthrough and immediate results is an important new data point that our schools will use with local Public Health officials and see if they could be comfortable with us going forward, and whether they share the degree of confidence that we have that the sport activity is not to encourage the spread of the virus. But youre right. We cant start unless our states and our local Public Health officials allow us to have contact practice and play and so that is an issue for us. Doug, i could imagine people watching and thinking that that is great that College Athletes have access to testing but what about me . Who do you say to them . You broke up, you could repeat the question. For all of the people sitting here saying this is wonderful that College Athletes have access to excellent tests, people at home, regular folks, would love to get their hands on this kind of thing. What would you say to them. I start by saying weve always focused on where we could provide the greatest benefit, greatest amount of good. Recently we were involved in the program with hhs to provide testing for Nursing Homes and in that way we feel great about the fact that were enabling grandmas and grandpas to ultimately end their period of isolation and get back together with their families, their kids, grandkids, great grandchildren in some cases. So were always focused on what we can do. We have our traditional segment that were doing nicely and that is hospital customers, that is urgent cares, et cetera. We think that were at stage now with our increased capacity that we could expand to this sort of segment. Were also going to be doing a lot of good. That is great. I think people at home like hearing that it is grandma and grandpa and our College Athletes. Thank you. Good luck. Thank you. Coming up, joe biden unleashes on the president. Just into us here at cnn, the fda has rejected this therapeutics pushed by the ceo of my pillow and an ally of President Trump and saying it has significant concerns about our safety. Lets go back to Elizabeth Cohen. This is called olie and rin and it is highly toxic and potentially fatal if consumed. Why was the fda looking into it. As far as we know, they were looking into it because a right wing trump ally with a stake in a company that used this ingredient suggested it. So apparently if youre a trump ally and you Say Something whacky lake, hey, this will work, try this out, that you will look at it. We dont know absolutely for sure why. But that could be, that seems to be part of the answer here. And so what now . Well, right now, so theyve rejected it for this particular purpose. And to one accept to reliable source has say, hey, this could work, lets try this for covid. So i think what now is not much. Elizabeth, thank you very much for the update. Lets get to the former Vice President. It is possibly strongest attack yet. Nominee joe biden unleashed on President Trump today. From his handling of the economy, to disparaging remarks he reportedly made about fallen Service Members. No punch was pulled in this speech today. President trump has demonstrated he has no sense of service, no loyalty to any cause other than himself. The president s chaotic mismanagement of the pandemic is Still Holding us back. Compared to other Major Industrial countries in europe and asia, during a pandemic, our Unemployment Rate is still more than double what other nations have gone up by half. Why . Because the president has botched the covid response. Botched it badly. From the very beginning hes understood the only way he could win the first time and could win this time is if he fundamentally divided the nation. Puts the nation, divides us at each others throats. Thats not who we are. Mj lee is with me now. And mj, i know this was billed as an Economic Policy speech but it was clearly much more than that. Reporter thats right, brooke. That was advertised to be a speech about covid and the state of economy, but it was so much more than that. And as soon as he took the podium, the first thing that he addressed was report about donald trump reportedly mocking americans who have serviced in wars, mocking americans who have died in wars. And late senator john mccain, of course, a veteran that he had insulted him as well, you could tell, i was sitting probably some 20 feet away from joe biden, you could really feel the anger and the frustration and you could tell that he felt truly disturbed by this report. And he made it clear that a part of that reason is that it is very personal for him. He talked about his late son beau biden and he said, you know, when he volunteered to join the military, he was not a sucker. The men and women who served in the military alongside him and particularly those who did not return home safely, those people were not suckers. He said he has come closest to losing his temper today and that today is probably the day that he has felt the most disappointed in his entire career, so this is a very fiery pushback from joe biden about trump reportedly saying these things. And one piece of news that joe biden made, i asked him about attorney general william barr being asked on cnn this week about which country he thinks poses greatest threat to u. S. Elections and he gave an answer that had raised eyebrows. Here is the exchange from the former Vice President. Attorney general william barr saying on cnn this week, he said that his assessment right now is that china poses most aggressive threat to u. S. Elections, even thor than iran or russia. Do you believe him . Is that also your understanding based on the Intelligence Briefings that you have received . No, its not consistent with the briefings ive received. And hes a lousy enough attorney general but hes a really bad intelligence officer. There are a lot of countries around the world i think that would be happy to see our election destabilized. But the one who is working the hardest, most consistently and never has let up is russia. And, again, it is unfair to say you guys. But ask yourself the receihetor question, what is he so afraid of Vladimir Putin now. So explicit condemnation about william barr and joe biden said hes now been tested once for covid19 and that he will regularly be tested going forward. And just a sign of how things are probably wrapping up for the biden campaign. Joe biden is traveling to michigan next week and Kamala Harris is going to wisconsin on monday. Great question to mr. Biden as well. Thank you. Good to see you. The wnba has long been on the front lines of the fight against social injustice and this season the voices are stronger than ever. Well talk with Seattle Storm legend sue bird and see if she has a message for President Trump, next. At least 20 pro basketball arenas all across the country will be actively involved in this upcoming election by converting into polling places or Voter Registration sites. It is the latest action in a year filled with unprecedented and historic sports activism led by the players from the wnba and the nba. Standing up for social justice has been much more than a talking point. Its really been a call to action. And this year the league developed a council and platform dedicated to promoting social justice and societal and racial issues. Every aspect of the wnbas issue is about social justice. And every game is in honor of the black lives Matter Movement and the say her name campaign. With me now sue bird, a wnba legend playing for the storm. The wnba has dedicated this entire season to breonna taylor. The wnba players have been speaking out for years. Back in 2016 the Minnesota Lynx and the new york liberty players wore the black lives matter matters shirts after the deaths of philando castile. You as we have spoken in the past, you have been extra vocal as well. Can you tell me why you and so many others in your league have been so willing to speak out and even more so than other sports organizations . Yeah. I mean, plainly said its in our dna at this point. I think as female athletes so often were overlooked. Were judged on everything but our basketball play, you know, whether its, oh, they need to wear tighter uniforms, oh, theyre too masculine. So the fact that our league is predominantly black, a lot of gay players as well. Were just used to this, sadly. So for us its just kind of what were about and we came to this wubble, this bubble because we wanted to say her name, women are forgotten. Its 80 black women. And i know that each and every day on this show i have a privilege of speaking to a number of africanamerican women. Many of them tell me, despite everything that this country has been going through, especially this summer, that america just hasnt been listening to them, that they have felt silenced in this country. And im curious for you, you know, what does it mean for these 144 women, 80 of whom are black, your own teammates, your Close Friends to get together and raise their voices on such a personal issue, do they feel that america is listening . Um, i hope so. I think whats unique about where we are right now as a Basketball League is we have a chance. Because obviously theres a lot of conversation on whether sports shouldve returned. And maybe each league, each person can kind of make an argument one way or the other. For us when we play basketball, thats when we have the platform. When we play basketball, thats when our voices are heard. Line we just talked about, weve been doing this. But now in this moment it feels like people are paying attention. In some ways were using the game of basketball, a game we love, but were using it so our voices can just continue to get amplified. Because, again, weve been doing this. And women are overlooked. Its just sadly a reality. And the women in our league as black women, you talk about people youre speaking to on your show. They feel the same way. They feel that when they take their uniform off, they are just black women in america forgotten. So we are fighting for visibility. Talk about unity in the wnba. You mentioned the bubble or the wubble youre living in. You are physically in the same place. You have gone through months of tough cba negotiations together. But, sue, is there something more . Like whats the special sauce that allowed you all to come together to make this statement as a league . Do you think its your strong leadership, or do you think, as you point out, youre a lot of women, black women, gay women, who have been used to, you know, maybe being put in your corners for so long and having to really use your voices . Yeah. I think its a combination of all of that. The word that always comes up is intersexuality and sectionality and thats had who we are. For me as a gay athlete, its like if im fighting for this kind of equality, how can i not fight for all the other kinds of equality, for black people, for trans people. And thats what our league is really about. The best thing about sports is we see that people are different colors. We see that people are different religions, sexual orientation. We respect it. Thats the difference. We dont go out there and say we dont see it. We respect those differences and were still able to fight for each other. Last question for you. President trump, i got to ask, President Trump has been belittling professional athletes for standing up for racial justice, not once has he said that he is proud of you all or proud of americans for putting themselves out there, for taking a stand for positive change. S sue, what would you like to say back to President Trump . I think at this point we all understand that politics right now and people wanting to win elections is superseding any kind of morals, seeing what is happening to our country. Sadly weve had to face people like President Trump in our own league. We have an owner basically tell us not to say that black lives matter, trying to make it a political statement, not a moral one. So, i dont know, as a league, all id like to say is continue to do what we do, were going to continue to amplify our voices, continue to say her name and thats what were about. If you dont like it, turn away. But were not going anywhere. And to get people out and to vote. Sue, thank you. No problem. Thanks for having me. Coming up, Pete Buttigieg reacts to that report accusing President Trump of making disparaging remarks about fallen soldiers.
