The White House Coronavirus task force puts iowa in the socalled red zone with the highest rate of new cases in the entire country. Now a key member of the task force, dr. Fauci, is now insisting he does have a good working relationship with President Trump. Just hours after the president said that he this is the president word inherited dr. Fauci and here is how he responded when he thinks the president trusts him. You know, i think he does. When you get statements like that, that doesnt really reflect what actually goes on. I was at white house yesterday at a Task Force Meeting with the Vice President and everything that we discussed including what you just spoke about regarding children, regarding what is going on, gets to the president and he understands that. So i dont i think that is kind of a distraction to pit me against the president. Were all on the same team. Meantime, fda commissioner stephen hahn said it is possible that he could resign if there is any political pressure to release a Covid Vaccine before he thinks it is ready. And those comments come just a couple of days after he said that a vaccine could be made available under an emergency use authorization prior to election day and before phase three trials are complete. All of this is happening as this Influential Group released a new report on who should receive the vaccine first when it is ready. Lets start there with elizabeth cohen. And well get to the vaccine representations and the hierarchy in a second, but tell me about the task force warning for iowa . It is interesting, this whole outbreak, it is like a snake swallowing a mouse, a big lump travels across the country as you know, as you experienced, started in new york, then you saw these hot spots in places like texas and florida, and now getting in larger numbers to more rural areas. So lets take a look at what this white house report said about the state of iowa. What they said is theyre seeing a 77 increase in cases from the previous week. And when you look at iowa, you see 232 cases for every 100,000 people. Now the National Average is 88 cases per 100,000 people. So you could just see in that number right there that iowa is in a difficult situation. Brooke. And what about the story about the vaccine, this new report, whenever it finally does get green lit, who does the group recommend who gets it first . So this is the National Academy of sciences which is a very Prestigious Panel and they face the question, you know, when that vaccine comes out, were not going to get enough doses for everyone immediately. There is not going to be enough. Well have to do some prioritization so here is the way they looked at it. The highest priority is first responders, doctors, nurses, other Health Care Workers on the front lines, seniors in nursing homes. There were other groups here, were giving examples. Middle priority are thoses with underlying conditions that would make them vulnerable from getting sick, people like prisoners who live in tight Group Settings and lower priority is young adults and children. So this is not so different from what other groups have come up with and it is interesting to see, there is a lot of on paper theory of what will happen when the vaccine does eventually come out. Elizabeth, thank you very much. Meanwhile, the president in wisconsin not focused on the pandemic but instead as former joe biden puts it, quote, fanning the flames of the nations racial tensions. He is in kenosha this afternoon, despite pleas from local leaders not to visit. He has not met with the family of jacob blake, the africanamerican man who was shot seven times in his back by police last month. Which ignited local street protests that turned violent and deadly. And as the president boarded his plane for wisconsin, he used provocative language to describe the protesters and made Crystal Clear hes focused on the violence and destruction he blames squarely on the democrats. A lot of people are look at what is happening to these democratrun cities and theyre disgusting. They see what is going on and they cant believe this is taking place in our country. I cant believe it either. One of the reasons im making the trip today and going to wisconsin is weve had such a big success in shutting down what would be right now a city that would have been kenosha, a city that would have been burned to the ground by now. Lets go straight to kenosha to ryan nobles. And if President Trump isnt visiting with the blake family, what is he doing this afternoon . Reporter well, brooke, as we speak, the president is right here behind me in this high school holding a round table discussion with Law Enforcement leaders here in the kenosha area and some federal Law Enforcement officials as well, including the acting secretary of the department of Homeland Security and william barr and today President Trump visited a burned out building, and met with the owners of that business who were dealing with the violence in the protests that have taken place here in kenosha. But what the president focused his energy on is the violence, the protests, and what led to them and that is the shooting of jacob blake. And hes just now started to dress that. Listen to what he said last night on fox news and then well ep daughter you with what yhe just said a few minutes ago. The police are under siege because of things they could do 10,000 great acts, which is what they do, and one bad apple or a choker, a choker, they choke shooting shooting the guy in the back many times. I mean, couldnt you have done something different, couldnt you have wrestled him. I mean, in the meantime he might have been going for a weapon. It is a whole big thing there. But they choke. Just like in a golf tournament, they miss a three foot were not comparing it to golf because that is not im saying people choke. Reporter so you see there Laura Ingraham tried to help the president away from this analogy connecting to a golfer and he goes all in on that and a few seconds ago he once again described the officer involved in the shooting as choking, as screwing up this incident, not necessarily dealing with the larger problems related to the arrest itself and then even going out broader and talk about policing in america generally. The president kind of leaning in to this way to describe this incident which caused so much pain and ang rish and frankly chaos in kenosha and continues to talk about that even today. Brooke. I want to stay on this, thank you so much for the update. The president as you point out speaking at that high school right now. Stead hearneden is now with me from the new york times. Sted, pleasure as always. The fact that the president is in kenosha this afternoon, again despite pleas from the governor on down to please, sir, not come right now. Why do you think he chose to go . I think the answer is clearly a political one. This is a president who has prioritized his role as and trying to get reelected over his kind of chief concern as a kind of governing and leading the country and uniting the country as we have typically seen president s behave in this time. If he were doing so, if that was his chief priority, then the calls from local leaders and then the calls from state leaders saying that this is not what is necessary at this time, would be something that he would heed to. That is not what he was doing because that is not frankly what he is interested in. This is an important Electoral College state and the president and his allies have decided that that message of driving a kind of division of highlighting the protests purely, just a fringe part of destructive elements of the protests, they think that helps them both drive out of the base and win backs folks they may have lost in suburbans. There is no real evidence of that but that is the play they are making and doing so even at the expense of causing chaos locally in kenosha. I want to come back to that point because im wondering some folks say will this may help him as there has been such violence erupting in multiple cities but i have to ged you on that clip we just played where he was sitting with Laura Ingraham and you heard ryan say he tripled down on the phrase choked and he is basically comparing the killing of a man in his back and kneeling on another to golf. To golf. Yeah. I think that that is a level of insensitivity that we come to expect from this president on these issues. We often think of it in political terms assee talking in the language of his base or trying to drive division for political gain. But lets be clear. This is been a person in his public life had leaned into Racial Division and accused of discriminatory housing practices, suggesting a black versus white season on the apprentice. This is something that has been a through line through his life. Sond that level of empathy and willingness to care, particularly about groups that have not had not been a champion for those groups, i think that is something that we frankly should expect at this point from the president. Expect it or not, the point is we have seen violence in kenosha, weve talked about it in portland and certainly not limited to those American Cities and when you look at the violence, a number of the largely peaceful protests, do you think it could play into President Trumps hands . Might his whole law and order message get him reelected . Because of this . I think it is a little early and we dont necessarily have evidence to really point to that. Hes riding a wave of Public Opinion here. What we do know is that when hes tried this previously, whether it is the caravan in 2018, whether it has been the protests back in portland that was a few months ago or highlighting kind of folks taking statues down in d. C. Or new york, that has not necessarily driven big surprise to him. I think that is for a couple of reasons. One, weve seen a large embrace of the general themes of black lives matter that there is an issue with Law Enforcement and treatment of black americans. But weve seen folks reject his responses so it is a matter of discipline. If he would just focus on the parts and elements and try to drive and maybe we would see some resonating here but hes always created more controversy in the process that distracted from that message. Maybe that changes in the next couple of months. But the evidence up until this point makes it pretty unlikely. You think about since the conventions, we have seen some pretty rough rhetoric from President Trump and joe biden as were now in the final stretch here before the first president ial debate. And joe biden is out there and trying to put the focus on coronavirus and how the administration is failed and trump is trying to tie baden and Kamala Harris to the radical left. Biden is leaning into this idea that americans know him. But,sted, is that enough for joe biden . I think biden has a couple of options. Weve seen him do the big speech yesterday condemning violence and throwing it back on trump, that this is his america and hes not leading to kind of bring the country together. We have to see whether that is going to be the only play that the Biden Campaign does. Do they stick with this and just hope that voters have an intuitive understanding of joe biden and his policies but the rnc was four straight nights of hammering biden on saying that he supports things like defunding the police which we know he does not, saying he hasnt condemned violence which we know that he has. Will the Biden Campaign go up on air in some of the states refuting that. Will they deploy surrogates like harris and do they sit back and say voters know us and they are rejecting the president. Democrats think that voters will reward them for being more cautious and more when it comes to the coronavirus and travel, but does that apply to that same kind of culture white grievance driven message that the president is now trying to say, i dont know if the two strategies are cross applicable from the violence to the protests. They have two months until election day. Always nice to have you on. Thank you, sir, very much. Coming up, 250 million. As the pandemic tips to up end peoples lives, the federal government is looking into launching a massive and very expensive Public Relations campaign to americans feel better about what is happening. Politico is reporting that the health and Human Services department will award 250 million in taxpayer money to a Communications Firm to help, quote, defeat despair and inspire hope about the pandemic. Nick valencia is following the story for us. So, nick, what do you know about the p. R. Campaign and why is it being rolled out now . Reporter the biggest question since the start of the pandemic, are agencies like hhs working in the interest of the American Public or are they putting politics ahead of science and that question is even more relevant today after politico contained an hhs document that shows they put out a bid for a contract, a whopping 250 million to a Communications Firm that could, quote, help defeat despair and inspire hope on the coronavirus. Here is part of what that work document says. By harnessing the power of digit and social media, sports and other partners to deliver important Public Health and economic information, the administration can defeat despair, inspire home and achieve national recovery. Critics say curiously this comes just about two months before the november president ial election. And just really adds fuel to the fire whether or not hhs and how independent they are from the white house. Brooke. We also know, nick, that a house panel just released new documents that show that while the Trump Administration was publicly downplaying the threat from covid, the Task Force Members were privately sounding the alarm to state governors about summer outbreaks. What more do you know about that . Reporter that is right. So every week the White House Task force prepared these reports that are privately sent to governors and so far the white house has declined to make them public. But a house subcommittee was able to publish eight weeks of the reports and as you mentioned it showed that while privately the task force was sending reports warning state officials about the dire threats of the coronavirus, President Trump was downplaying the threats saying things like repeatedly over the summer calling for the swift reopening of the economy and despite the threat to millions of americans. Now the subcommittee went on so say there has been 14 states since june 23rd in the socalled red zone states, according to the subcommittee, that have failed to follow public guidance from the task force, like closing bars and restaurants and where social distancing isnt happening or instituting state wide mask mandates, here in georgia, governor kemp, one of the states refusing to implement a mask mandate. This is troubling information that Public Health data according to the subcommittee is not being listened to and according to the democratled panel it starts at the top with President Trump. The white house has pushed back on the reports calling them partisan politics but it reem fammizes and confirms what weve been hearing from sources, that the president has failed to prioritized combatting coronavirus and has not understood since the beginning of pandemic. Nick, thank you very much. And Labor Day Weekend around the corner. Two top officials on the Coronavirus Task force are warning all of us to be vigilant. Dr. Fauci said this weekend will be key in determining whether we get a running start at containing the virus this fall. He told governors it is critical that we do not have a repeat of the memorial day and july fourth holiday which led to a surge in covid cases and the u. S. Testing czar giroir is stressing the need to wear masks. So with me now, dr. Colleen craft from Emory University hospital. Dr. Craft, nice to have you on. What happens if there is a repeat from memorial day and from the fourth of july, if there is a spike after this weekend . I think were going to be finding ourselves much in the same place we were in midjuly and early august where we are, again, swamping hospitals and testing the limits of our Health Care System and seeing a rise in the number of deaths that weve tried so hard to minimize with experimental medications and trying to keep people away from each other. Again, underscoring the point, as we inch closer to fall and winter, were at the press up is of the flu season making it worse. Weaver been planning for a month to figure out what type of testing were going to utilize to distinguish flu from covid. Those are still very different diseases and so we dont want to expose either group to the other if were hospitalizing them or treating them. We also want to get rapid treatment to them. So now we have to deal with a supply chain, i believe, not sure how much this has been talking about, of flu testing as well. Many of the covid platforms that weve been using all summer and spring for covid testing also we rely on for flu testing and the struggle right now to supply covid testing is magnified when we need all of the tests. I appreciate you making that point. I have a feeling well be talking more about that. I mentioned admiral gir yooir, testing czar, and was a bit annoyed about having to answer questions about when every american will be able to quickly and cheaply get a covid test. So let me play a quick clip of what he said on that call. It is great to talk about this utopian kind of idea where everybody has a test every day and we could do that. I dont live in the utopian world and i live in the real world and real world had no tests for this new disease when this first started. We could return to Society Without having everyone have a test every single day. We can do that and were showing you can do that. Dr. Craft, what do you think of his point there . Well, i think that we are living in a distopia with a lot of things coming at us. We absolutely need to move forward with testing. We need to have enough tests for everybody to get one. I know brett, i think hes a wonderful physician and scientist but i disagree about going back to how we were with supply chain issues in early march and april is not forward progress. We should invest in getting people back to work to reassure the population when they begin to have symptoms that seem like covid. Yes. Yes, dr. Craft, thank you. Coming up, President Trump launches a new attack on gnash players for speaking out on racial justice. But does not condemn the Police Killing of jacob blake. Well be right back. Let me help. Right now President Trump is in kenosha, wisconsin, a city still traumatized by the Police Shooting of jacob blake and the Chaotic Street clashes that left two people dead two days later. Live pictures at the high school at a table flanked with Law Enforcement. But it is the street violence that the president is focused on during his visit. Not what happened to jacob blake and the anger that it unleashed beyond tennessee akenosha. He began attacking nba players blasting them for taking a stand against Police Violence by leading a boycott of games that spilled over into other sports. They have scoffed as silly while suggesting sports have no place in politics. But the athletes are nor than celebrities and they use their voices as they deal with the emotional grief with witnessing Police Brutality and so many of them are parents and my next guest has worked as a psychologist in Public Schools and veterans hospitals and with profootball players and recently the nba Milwaukee Bucks. So an honor, sir. It is an honor to be here, brooke. Thanks for having me. Snapshot of the nation, is you have this fatal pandemic, this polarizing election, social and racial unrest, it is heavy. An you have the president today, despite the wishes of local officials and jacob blakes only family in kenosha and you have been in communities like these. What impact do you think this visit will have . We dont know yet. But just from a level of anticipating, everything was quelling down an that is why the governor and the mayor asked that your presence would not be a help but that is all of the ammunition he needed to really come. When you say what is it going to do. When you have an uprising things dont happen at night. So right now you have the calm people and the Peaceful Protesters but the real tell will come later on tonight. What about jacob blakes family. It is my understanding youve spoken with and met with jacob blakes uncle. Will you share some of that conversation . Im just so amazed at the resiliency and the power of the family, specifically his uncle. When we talked on sunday, we were talking about strategizing for the visit of trump to be able to reduce the noise. And you could think after your nephew was shot seven times in a very humane fashion, strapped to the bed like an animal after he wasnt able to walk, that they would like the violence but they were all about the peace. What they could do to bring the people down. They want to hold those officers accountable but they want the land to be at peace. That is what his nephew wants and that is what their trying to promote. I know that youve been doing all of this work and so many of the communities and you run the front lines after George Floyds death this summer, you see all of the people, black, brown, white, young, old, protesting, feeling perhaps change is in the air and then, yet, in time another person of color gets killed and the cycle seems to repeat itself. Yeah, this is america and this is what it is. This is a different time. Every time you have different times, you have special moments where you see this is not exactly the same. And when you talk i call it the unholy trinity because not only do we have the pandemic, we have the social justice unrest and people who have life problems before this happened so we put those together and it creates a recipe of everybody saying, something has to change. So you say, we look at those powerful moments from the civil war, we look at powerful moments that come after the Civil Rights Movement and we look at this and this has the same type of feeling. Because if you do a reverse look at history, when poor people came together to rise up, saying they have us divided there is no reason, if we all come together we coo make this true america what it needs to be so were at a time right now where were not trying to make a more perfect union, were trying to create that perfect union. Can it happen . Nobody knows. But this is a special time different from any other time in the recent past. It is special, it is challenging. At times hopeful and through all of this, as i mentioned a second ago, you have ball players, professional athletes who are wearing these social justice causes quite literally on their sleeves. The Milwaukee Bucks boycotted game five against the Orlando Magic and it was the bucks way of making a statement against Racial Injustice and Police Brutality. Kwaku, what do you think of the role athletes are playing in this overall movement and how would you advise theme because it is not lost on any of us that they have young black boys and girls and this is personal for them. You know what it is. We talk about a special movement. What does this remind you of . We think about the untimely passing of Chadwick Boseman and got his career launched as Jackie Robinson so athletes do have a great place to play in politics and they do have a role in change in society. Because when you look at the athletic arena, when people could come together with different backgrounds and forget about all of the demographics that change us, that separate us and brings us together. So now when you see an athlete who has the revolutionary power of a cash us clay, would was muhammad ali, and that is when you know it was different because athletes could play it safe because they have a small window to make the money, and they dont want to upset the owners and the base but a true revolutionary is willing to die, give their life and name and reputation and money just like mow la mohammed ali and they were going to forfeit that game but they said well stand in solidarity with you. So whether it was a boycott or a moment in time to pause for what was going on, you see we know we have a voice. We understood the pressure on us coming back into the bubble. We didnt want to be a distraction. So were going to make sure that the power we have now were going to leverage it no matter what it may cost. And now when youre dealing with a large group of people it is hard to be on one page and be in concert and symphony, but all of the athletes are tired. And not only do we see it in major league, and the wnba, but we saw if t in Major League Soccer and in hockey, a lead predominantly white and that is when you know what this is Something Special. So we go back to that beginning. How do we know this is a time . It takes one person to be the person willing to come up to sacrifice themselves and for everybody else to come on. So this is a beautiful spirit but we cant do this by itself. It is not ome the athletes and the entertainers but the people like you and me who will help and do our part, if we all do this together that we could make a change. But i applaud the athletes for using that microphone so do Something Special and bring the word out. Stepping forward and helping lead the change. We all play a role in this. Kwaku, bless you. Were counting 63 days from the november election and now facebook is warning about a new effort by russian trolls to meddle in the whole process, facebook said a tip from the fbi led to the discovery of members of that same group that was part of russias attempts to interfere back in 2016. And it may also be happening on other social media platforms. So doany is looking into this. What is facebook doing about this . This is a very significant update on foreign interference here. It all centers around a website called peace data which posed as a left wing independent online magazine and recruited real freelance writers including some americans to write pieces for the magazine. Graphica, a company that looks into some of the pages pointed out that the tactics here were quite similar to the troll group in 2016 where they were trying to split democrats. They saw that biden and harris were being attacked from the left. But, of course, this was not a real leftwing magazine. It is actually, according to facebook, based on the tip from fbi, linked to there russian group. The good news is that it got low traction and in the early stages of development. And but the bad news of course is that this is happening and that the fact that they found this, there is probably some more stuff going on, brooke. What about how some of the profiles were created with the images of fake people. What is that all about . Yeah, so this is the crazy part of the story and i want to show you an image of a person who purported to be the editor of peace data. Went by the name of alex la costa and that twitter account doesnt look suspicious and you see the man in a pair of glasses there. Looks like a real person. But what you believe that according to the experts that analyze this, that picket picture is not of a real human being. It is an artificially generated image made by a computer of a fake person that has never existed. The same sort of technology that is used to make deep fake videos. And if you remember back to 2016, one of the ways that we could figure out if a account was fake or if it was a troll was this would use images stolen from real peoples accounts with this technology out there now it is almost impossible to tell the difference. So really we are sort of swimming in unprecedented and very murky online waters as we lead up to novembers election, brooke. Looking at how technology could advance and it is troubling. Donnie o.
