Increases at the nationwide death top tops 1,000 second day in a row. The last time that happened was in late may. In total, hospitalizations are kwurntly currently their record and the current states breaking records. From the prestigious new england journal of medicine on effectiveness of hydroxychloroquine, the drug touted and taken by President Trump in treating covid19. Cnn Health ReporterJacqueline Howard is standing by with results of this study, and so jacqueline, this is not the first time we have heard that this drug is not effective in treating covid patients, but this is the new england journal of medicine. What do they say . Now, this study says what other studies have found as well that hydroxychloroquine appears to not provide a benefit to covid19 patients. Now, what this new study, it involved more than 500 patients and hospitals in brazil who were confirmed to have covid19 and it separated the patients into three groups. Some of the patients received standard care n. They did not receive hydroxychloroquine. Some patients received hydroxychloroquine, and some received hydroxychloroquine along with an antibiotic wand treated over the course of seven days, and researchers tracked how they were doing up to 15 days. Brooke, by day 15, the researchers said they saw no difference in the recovery of patients who were given hydroxychloroquine, and the patients not given hydroxychloroquine. But what the researchers did notice, some of the patients who were given hydroxychloroquine, some of them had unusual heart rhythms and some had elevated liver enzyme levels. Thats something weve seen in studies before, but overall, this study just adds to the evidence showing how this drug appears to not provide a benefit. Jackie howard, weve heard it time and time again and again now from the new england journal of medicine. Thank you very much for results from their study. We start there with dr. Aimish adullja a senior for studies. Welcome to you. I want to begin with the study on hydroxychloroquine, not effective. You know, again hearing, not effective at treating covid. Can we safely say, no more hydroxychloroquine for covid patients, period . I think so. This is something that weve seen time and time again be proved in multiple studies to have no benefit and a side effect profile not accept nabil these coronavirus patients. It was important to get the studies to get a definitive answer, and there was data people were extrapolating. Time and time again, no benefit in subgroups. We need to move away from this drug and use remdesivir, things that actually have data behind them. Let me ask about kids going back to school in the fall. We married from President Trump. He is adamant kids need to go back this fall and claiming there is little risk of students spreading the virus. What he said just yesterday i would like to see the schools open. Open 100 , and well do it safely. Well do it carefully, but when you look at the statistics i just read having to do with children and safety, theyre very impressive. Very strong immune systems. Do you understand that some schools history, they dont transit easily and a lot of people say they dont transmit and were looking at that, studies, john, very hard, that particular subject, that they dont bring it home with them. Now, they dont doctor, we just know this is not true. Can you explain to viewers why that is . Well, it is true everybody wants to open school and there be principles to use to open them up safely. It isnt true this can be done 100 and without making modifications. You have to make sure, for example, schools is ability to social distance, decrease capacity in classroom have enough resources to use face coverings and hand sanitizer. How theyre going to protect vulnerable teachers. It might be done School District by School District level and dont neat people butting in how to do it and making it becoming more politicized than it needs to be. An urgent task to try to do it and hard to do it in places the outsbr o outbreak is out of control, for instance, miamidade. But others can do it. Shouldnt use a threat to push schools to do this. Make sure theyre comfortable doing it and follow cdc guidance how to do it. You bring up miamidade. Our reporter is waiting in the wings there and talk to her in a second. Speaking of school openinging or not, thinking of college. I know you are on the ncaa covid19 advisory panel. Do you see College Sports coming back this fall . And if so, how can it be done safely . Its very hard to think about that when we have upward trajectories in many states. Likely you have to tier sports looking at things, for example, as football as being highrisk and maybe soccer or baseball a lower risk. It can be done but very, very challenging to do. Were working hard to try to figure how this is possible. We want to make sure theres adequate testing of these athletes and the time were having turnarounds for tests you cant think about having competitions with schools mixing people when it takes that long to get a test back. Something that is very challenging kbrop think the book is closed ton but its becoming harder and harder to think how we might move forward. Lastly, on masks and testing. We know the president finally this week has been actually vocal on wearing masks. That its patriot. He went on to an event he didnt wear one, but, still, this was newsworthy. Then he goes on to say that testing is overrated. Do you think testing is overrated . Testing is underrated. Exact opposite. We need to do much more testing. We cant have a test result taking seven days to come back and expect to do contact tracing. Its sad were seven months into this pandemic and still talking about the same things that were occurring in january. Until we glet there we have no feasible path to live with the virus or any way to control spread. If we dont know whos infected and whos not, the most basic go answer and were still not able to answer it to adequate satisfaction to get a handle on this. We have to continue to press this in respect needs to be a national strategy. Tested for this like for hiv or anything. It cant have all the obstacles in the way of getting testing done. Its the only way forward. The original sin of this pandemic is testing, from doctor amesh adalja. Thank you very much. We mentioned south florida. In south florida, if you go outside without a mask it could cost you up to 100 or get you arrested if you get caught third time. Violating their masked mandate grappling with a dangerous surges infections. Nearly 40 officers responsible for enforcing the mandate and the city already issued more than 100 tickets this week alone. Randi kaye is live in south florida. Listen, i get it. Its a drastic move, depending who you talk to, but what is the city saying . Is this just what they have to do to enforce maskwearing . Reporter yeah. Apparently what they need to do and every little bit helps, brooke, right now, because we are still looking at really high numbers here in south florida. Another 10,000plus new cases in the last 24 hours here in the state, brooke, and a Record Number of deaths. 173 people dead in the last 24 hours. Yet the governor just a couple hours ago at a press conference said he thinks that south florida has stabilized. He sees improvement in miami. Tell you what i see in miamidade. We see nearly 2,000 people there hospitalized with covid19 in that county. And, also, in addition to those tickets, business ticketed as women. 500 for businesses not complying with mask theres. Amazing you see the spread that people are still not complying. Why they didnt away with warnings in miami. Just ticketing people straightaway. The mayor there, brooke, is really concerned about spread within the households. He says at least 73 of households report more than one member of a household that been infected with covid19. That means people are out and about. Bringing it home, spreading it to their family members. He thinks actually masks are a good idea with these multigenerational families, maybe even wear masks inside. He is a big proponent of masks and thinks they work. Listen to this. What were seeing is early evidence that the mask in public rule is working, and we want to make sure its being adopted universally in our population. We dedicated 39 Police Officers this week to just do mask enforcement, and were seeing some results. Our peak growth rate was 125 new cases a day over the last few days, 14day average. Were down to 20 new cases a day. Thats about 1 6 of the slope, you know, in its peak. Reporter and aside from the mask issue, major Staff Shortages in hospitals. 51 hospitals across the state asked for medical personnel. Theyve requested more than 2,000 nurses, and, brooke, one note about longterm care facilities as well. We know that 47 of the deaths here in the state of florida have taken place in longterm care facilities. Its why the governor is trying to take action. Sending in Incident Management Teams to these facilities, about 4,000 facilities across the state, to try to check the ppe supply and also look at Infection Control and just see how people are being screened. Screened inside these facilities. Anything to help stop the spread, brooke. Glad theyre trying, good. Randi kaye, thank you for the update out of florida. Reminding you, Anderson Cooper and dr. Michael cohen is getting out of prison again. This morning a judge ordered the president s former lawyer to be released to home consignment. He was sent back to prison after violating terms of his release. Convicted of tax evasion and other charges but today the government sent him back in over his refusal to rule out writing a book on his dealings with President Trump. K our report sir live with developments here. Out tomorrow afternoon. What more are you hearing . Reporter right, brooke. A brief hearing over the telephone. The federal judge saying flatly that the government retaliated against Michael Cohen by sending him back to prison over this tellall book cohen a working on about his time with the president. On 21 years being on the bench he never saw the terms the government wanted cohen to agree to. The one he objected with most, mentioned books and talking to the media. He couldnt be on social media. The judge didnt believe there was not another interference in play and no other inference than retaliation. As part of this agreement, cohen will have to agree to other terms objected to, such as having electronic surveillance, a prohibition doing his own Grocery Shopping and getting the bop, bureau of prisons agreement to opportunities coming his way. He is agreeing and one week to work out parameters defining how he engages with the media. The judge saying just as you couldnt hold a press conference in a prison cell, he does not expect cohen to hold a press conference at his home. Those are going to be negotiated over the next week. Cohen will be released tomorrow by 2 00 p. M. Amp being tested for coronavirus. To be continued on what that man tells and how much hes able to say after prison. For now, thank you very much. And i just want to take a moment to highlight annie cr incredible scene op capitol hill today. Alexandria ocasiocortez talking about an incident. A grown man, u. S. Representative reportedly calling his female colleague and fingbitch, forgive me but thats the quote. Heres how ocasiocortez responded. I do not need representative yoho to apologize to me. Clearly he does not want to and i will not stay up late at night waiting for an apology from a man who has no remorse over calling women and using abusive language towards women. But what i do have issue with is using women, our wives and daughters, as shields and excuses for poor behavior. Mr. Yoho mentioned he has a wife and two daughters. I am two years younger than mr. Yohos youngest daughter. Iable someones daughter, too. My father, thankfully is not alive to see how mr. Yoho treated his daughter. My mother got to see mr. Yohos disrespect on the floor of this house towards me on television. And i am here, because i have to show my parents that i am their daughter, and that they did not raise me to accept abuse from men. Congressman yoho denies he used any vulgar language and two days later delivered what he considered an apology for his quote unquote abrupt manner. I see this, gaslighting at its finest. The president set dangerous precedent that men can just say something, didnt even happen, when the press witnessed it, and in my opinion, congressman yoho is actually following trumps lead, just saying, it didnt happen. Just saying, no. He never called congresswoman alexandria ocasiocortez a bitch even though a press member and congresswoman both heard it. The congresswoman certainly does doesnt need me sticking up for her. Lets be clear. That was no apology. This moment was about so much more than this one incident, this repeated pattern of belittling women, degrading attacks against women harks , h come to an end. With me, Chris Cillizza and what did you think of the congresswomans remarks this morning . Reporter well, powerful. You picked the most powerful piece. Its not about the epithet but the environment in which it can be said and done. I also think, you just noted, brooke, this isnt about him saying one thing and ocasiocortez says another. We found out about this because a reporter overheard it. This is not that situation. This is ted yoho saying what two people there said they heard, that they didnt hear. Important context. This is not just, well, maybe she misheard him. This is, well, seems ted yoho said this and honestly i wrote this yesterday on cnn. Com. That wasnt an apology delivered on the house floor. It wasnt even an, im sorry if anyone was offended. It was, im sorry if you misunderstami misstood what i said and again, there wasnt a misunderstanding. That wasnt an apology. I want to talk about President Trumps favorite topics. His cognitive abilities. He defended that test in yet another fox news interview, describing it as some sort of memory game and in case our viewers missed any of this, heres how he described it. It was 30 to 35 questions. The first questions very easy. Last questions much more difficult, like a memory question. Its like you go person, woman, man, camera, tv. Soed they say, could you repeat that . So i said, yeah. So its person, woman, man, camera, tv. Later they said, go back to that point. They dont tell you this. Go back to that question, and repeat them. Can you do it . And you go, person, woman, man, camera, tv. They say, thats amazing. Chris . What was that . Reporter okay. Yeah. Okay. Person, woman, man, camera tv. See . I did it. Heres the important thing to remember, brooke. What donald trump took was something called the montana cognitive assessment test. What that test is used for typically clinically is to diagnose the possibility of alzheimers, of parkinsons, brain tumors, als, lou gehrigs disease, serious mental i illnesses that might be caught in their earliest stages. Its not an i. Q. Test, a memory test. I guess donald trump can say he ace add test to assess whether he has a serious Mental Illness and he doesnt according to his results, but, again, its not the test is the no the thing that donald trump seems to think the test is. I think thats the best and kindest way to say that. Uhhuh. Got you. And no followup questions into all this. So many questions watching that. Chris cillizza, good to see you. Thank you. So many. Thank you, brooke. So many. A lot of rosy predictions lately in the race for a coronavirus vaccine, but experts warn creating one is only half the battle. Breaking news this afternoon. Just hit this as we sat in commercial break. It is official. The United States now has hit the 4 million mark in terms of cases of coronavirus. 4 million. Further highlighting the nations distinction as the worlds leader in cases. And it only took 15 days to add 1 million to that number. Moments ago the white house announced Vice President mike pence heads to miami next week marking beginnings of phase three for a coronavirus vaccine. And volunteering in trials dr. Anthony fauci says drugmakers are working swiftly to find a vaccine. The thing that we did at extraordinary speed was to go from the identification, which in the form of the sequence which became public, to actually developing a vaccine, and if want to do it correctly, with safety, and real attention to safety and efficacy, i think we are going as fast as we possibly can. Ands the ceo of Biotechnology Innovation Organization or bio for short. A Trained Group representing academic institutions and doctor, welcome. Thank you, brooke. Glad to be here. Vaccines. So this week, a vaccine from moderna found to produce immune responses in one stud they could be promises. Moderna and several other companies eyeing end of are this year or maybe early 2021 as states for possibility availability to the public. Are these timelines realistic and the do you think well have a vaccine soon . Well, i would say it is all looking very good. Particularly this week. Not only did we have moderna phase two results announced last week, but just this week three more vaccine candidates showed that they were showing very encouraging results in their early phase two trials. So we just have to back up a little and break it down, phase one, two, three. What does that all mean . Phase one, developing a new drug, youre trying to look and see, is this even safe to put into humans . Thats really a bar you want to clear. With phase two, youre starting to look in a small group of patients to know that it actually works. It actually does what youve designed it to do. At least in a small group. With phase three, you then sdpoo sdpoond a lar expand to a Large Population and see if the vaccine is safer and effective. Its good news were getting close to it and because of tireless work of scientists across the sunt and across the globe. Grateful for them. Thank goodness for them. Keep working. Add the department of youth and Human Services says the speed m january. What about in terms of safety and effectiveness . Definitely an ambitious timeline and we at our organization have been saying were hopeful to have a successful vaccine candidate out to patients by the spring of 2021. I know that seems like a long time away, but in science timelines this is incredibly fast. As dr. Fauci alluded to. We have never seen this type of speed of scientific progress ever in the history of Biomedical Research and it is amazing. We at bio have been tracking all programs across the globe targeted at ending this disease and its clear 660 projects under way around the globe simply designed to fight covid. 170 of these are really targeted at developing a vaccine. We have lots of good work going on, on therapeutics and lots of good work going on on vaccines and enkicouraging so many shotsn goal to try to get it right. I read a newspaper that basically said science has never moved this fast. If a vaccine is approved being able to effectively deliver 300 million doses, a concern to some experts. We mentioned yesterday the white house announced this 2 billion contract with pfizer for 100 million doses of vaccines, which should all be free to americans, which is wonderful for people who just cant afford it. So how do you just logistically, get these vaccines out there once this is approved . Hmm. Well, its going to be a herculean effort, but the good news is that its already under way. You know, International Organizations as well as leaders across the u. S. Have been paying very critical attention to not just getting a vaccine that works but making sure we also have a process to manufacture it and to scale up that manufacturing as quickly as humanly possible. So theyre paying just as careful attention to those steps as they are to making the vaccine candidate first. So we are very confident at bio once a successful candidate has been identified well be able to get those out to patients and its amazing to see the power of the promise of science to really hope to bring this situation to an end. As this process continues on, and we have nor vaccine news well have you back on. Doctor, thank you very much. Thank you, brooke. Still ahead here, Major League Baseball returns tonight and we are just now hearing a player who was supposed to play this evening is now out after a positive covid test. Tada did you know Liberty Mutual customizes your Car Insurance so you only pay for what you need . Given my unique lifestyle, thatd be perfect let me grab a pen and some paper. Know what . Im gonna switch now. Just need my desk. My chair. And my phone. Only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Well the names have all. Welcome back, america. It sure is good to see you. Baseball is back. A little over three hours, Major League Baseball starts its regular season with a game between the new york yankeers and Washington Nationals and we just learned a National Play other, juan soto tested positive for coronavirus and will miss tonights game. Wholl will be there, dr. Anthony fauci, throwing out the ceremonial first pitch to start off the season unlike no other in history. For starters only 60 dames long and no fans in the seats. Joining me, david obrien, Sports Writer for the athletic. Thank you four coming back and talking ball with me. Details ive head about. Shortened season, obviously, no fans. Then i read cardboard cutouts of spectators and sound effects . Tell me more . Fake sound. The fake noise at all the ballparks. Cutouts, i dont know. Have them in quite a few parks. Literally just cardboard cutouts of people sitting in the seats. Why is this . Players want this . I dont think the players asked for the cardboard cutouts. I think they did that on their own. They think the appearance, aesthetic is a little better and big advertising on outfield seats and that kind of thing. Crowd noise. Tell what you, im as traditional as they come and thought it would be really stupid, but the crowd noise is much better than the dead silence the first couple intersquad games. I couldnt imagine them playing a regular season game with absolute no crowd noise. And the pumped in crowd noise they had is actually an ipod mlb sent all the teams about 70 different sounds of cheers and different volumes of cheers that kinds of thing. And handle right, its pretty good. So interesting. Seventh Inning Stretch . Atbat songs . Yes. So many questions. Also you mentioned advertising. This is an era of baseball in the era of black lives matter and this huge social justice movement. Weve seen a couple players kneel during exhibition games and know players, theyll be allowed to wear black lives matter patches, or united for change patches. Right. What are you hearing about some of the players plans . Well, gape kapler, the giants manager, actually one of their first games took knee a couple nights ago. So thats just how far weve come. Can you imagine him having done that you know, last year even . So things have changed, man, and its barely raised and eyebrow. I didnt hear anyone howling or protesting over him doing that at all. One of the exhibition games held up a fist. Nobody took a knee. Im sure well see people take a knee at a lot of games and i wouldnt be surprised if we saw some guys do it in mass. Half the team do it or something. I think things are really different now and its viewed as an acceptable form of protest, which is always was, but so many people couldnt see it for what it was. I think they do now. Totally different now. Totally different now. A couple bignamed players, david price, buster posey, ryan zimmerman, decided not to play the season because of the pandemic. Do you think well see more players dropping out . I dont maybe if the team starts out horribly, and a couple of guys test positive. That kind of thing. But i think probably weve got all the guys that have done it, were thinking about doing it, that were on the fence. Mike trout one a lot of people speculated might be the biggest name in the sport and said yesterday, im playing. Braves had a couple. The 36yearold veteran leader. One of the, i thought velasquez would do if and he opted out. Fernandez, another cy young former winner. Hard for him to play for 370 grand. And we mentioned nats and yankees today. And watching for fauci in his nationals mask and his i bet he throws a strike wagie in watching for a stri hes an athlete p. A point guard. Thank you so much. And still ahead, covid19 in pregnant women at an alarming rate. More, next. In a crisis, youre tested. As a nation, weve been tested before. And he has, too. The threat of coronavirus is adding yet another layer of caution and millions of concerns pregnant women who are pregnant during the pandemic. 31 is hospitalized, and thats more than five times the percentage of nonpregnant women. I just want the bring in a woman who dedicated her life to helping women, especially women of color, navigate their pregnancies. Dr. Amanda little richardson is from Kaiser Permanente jose medical center. If you have not watched this series, i watched every minute of it, and its called lennox hill. You have to come here with a really open mind of how these people are feeling. I want to work with the population. Get angry. Yes, you can. Listen to me. You can. Oh, dr. Richardson is with me. Now, i might have just fan girled you during the commercial break because you just blew me away, just with who you are and what you have been able to accomplish in the medical world. This study did not clarify if the women were hospitalized because of pregnancy related reasons or complications due to covid, and so what do these numbers tell you . They reflect the disparities that we have been struggling to reduce midterm mortality within the United States, asupespecial africanamerican women who die more compared to their white counterparts. I would be interested in what the terms are in access to health care, are we exhauster baiting already medical conditions, and so its very concerning for sure. Is there anything i wrote down what you said, four to five times the rate, you know, just the issues that black women face, black pregnant women face. Is there anything that they can do to minimize their risks . Thats an excellent question. Thats the golden ticket. Thats what our work is for. Currently california has the california maternal its how do we approach women that are bleeding heavily afterward, and by initialling the standard approaches for caring all of these women, they have been able to improve Maternal Health outcomes. By initiating these kind of bundles across the country, i think we can see improvements and its just one step in the right direction for sure. You mentioned the fact you were in california, and i would be remiss not to ask about that, and i watched the series lennox hill, here in new york city and then you wanted to be back in california to be with your husband and you had a precious baby girl, ing a and the covid numbers, how are you and your colleagues dealing . I am fortunate to work in a hospital that had a Quick Response to the virus in march. I have been very fortunate and have not had to care for so many pregnant women who have had covid. What i think i am seeing among my patients is increased anxiety and stress is what catching the virus during pregnancy could mean to them, and it could help their baby and the health of their children. Initial studies were showing there were no vertical transmissions, meaning if the mom became pregnant the baby would not catch the virus until after birth, and now there are questions about that. Theres lot of uncertainty. During covid, my job has been to try and provide a source of comfort to my patients, even in the space of not knowing and making sure we continue to provide Exceptional Care for all moms. You are a new mom yourself. N newish. How old is your daughter . 17 months. All good with new mom . New mom and baby is healthy and everything . Shes very healthy. We are very fortunate. We talk about her diagnosis, and we are grateful she continues to thrive. Me as a new mom, i am still working on the 10 pounds of pregnancy, and otherwise i am good emotionally and physically and really grateful. Grateful to have you on. Wish you all the best health to you and your family and just thank you so much. Dr. Amanda little richardson from the Netflix Series lennox hill. Thank you. Still ahead, the mayor teargassed in portland. Now some republicans are speaking up. The calming scent of lavender by downy infusions calm. Laundry isnt done until its done with downy. The countdown has begun. til everyone can enjoy a professional clean feel. At home. This is cnn breaking news. Welcome to the lead. I am jake tapper. We begin with breaking news in the health lead. Minutes ago the United States of america marked 4 million cases of the coronavirus, to put it in perspective how quickly the pandemic is escalating in the country, it took the u. S. 99 days to reach the first million cases in april and it was another 43 days to reach 2 million in june, and then 15 days for the United States to add another million infections totaling more than 4 million nationwide. President trump would argue this is only because of increased testing. Its true that testing has increased in the u. S. , and the president s own Health Experts are saying these numbers are going up the way they are not because
