Were seeing everywhere. Lets see if he takes any questions. This is as cnn has new reporting that allies of the president are now afraid that donald trump and his white house are proceeding with no direction. The perfect illustration of that, these allies point to is the president attempt to publicly discredit the top Infectious Disease expert dr. Fauci. Something else that should worry any ally of the president , the more and more states and School Districts across the country, they are not bending to the president s demands to keep their economies open and get children back into classrooms. Theyre not looking at politics, theyre looking at reality and the data and experts telling them by enlarge the numbers are going in the wrong direction, still. Even though the president does not acknowledge that. In 37 states new infections are increasing. Trending up week over week. In some states at alarming rates. At least 26 states are pausing or dialing back the reopening plans in an effort to contain the spread now. Which has meant some of the largest School Districts are pushing ahead with their plans now to start school online. And forget about what the president wants. What do parents want . Here is a window into everyones thinking. In a new poll they found a majority of parents in the United States say it is too risky to send their children back to classrooms right now. Including a slim majority of republicans and nine in ten black parents. So what is the president going to say about that today. Kaitlan collins is standing by at the white house. What are we hearing about this press conference . Reporter well, were told so far by a person familiar with the president is expected to say that it is going to focus on china and the big question is whether or not the president takes questions because often you see the white house say there is a press conference and it is not unless he actually takes questions and if he does take questions hes going to be faced with questions about what is happening across the nation with coronavirus. Because lately despite saying the surges in cases, the president s former chief of staff talking about how hard it is to get a test and the results of that test. The president has not been focusing on that problem and instead the crisis that the white house has been dealing with is the fallout after they anonymously criticized dr. Fauci over the weekend in this attempt to undercut him or undermine his advice. Now, many people in the white house do not think that was a wise move for the white house to make. Because instead it is creating a feud between the white house and dr. Fauci and the president and dr. Fauci at a time when they are focusing on what is going on in the country but also with a little over 100 days to go before the election. And in a typical white house they would not be focused on Something Like this, they would be focused on their opponent what is going on with that and this is not a typical white house and some fear it is opening up to criticism like this from what joe biden said just a few moments ago. Mr. President , please listen to your Public Health experts instead of denigrating them. Do your job, mr. President. Because if we cant deal with the Public Health crisis, we cant deal with the economic crisis. Reporter now, after seeing how putting out that anonymous memo about fauci seemed to backfire, the white house is backing off of that. Though someone close to the situation said the damage has already been done and put doubt out there about what dr. Fauci is saying. And that is certainly something that the president could be asked about because hes been the one probably the most irritated out of other people in the white house with how dr. Fauci has publicly contradicted him and Getting Better Approval Ratings than what he has. And talking about china and the relationship with china is, yes, an important issue, of course. But the fact that hes holding a press conference, if he isnt going to be and not saying that hes addressing the pandemic is also just added to exactly what youre reporting, kaitlan. It is remarkable when you look at the direction the country is headed now. Thank you. Shell be standing by for that. And in a extra move, four former directors of the cdc are accusing President Trump of putting lives at risk. They write this in an opinion piece in part, unfortunately their sound science is being challenged with partisan pot shots and sowing confusion and mistrust when people need leadership and expertise and clarity, weve seeing the effect of undermining the cdc play out in our population. Willful disregard for Public Health guidelines is leading to a sharp rise in infections and deaths. The association of also voicing support for dr. Anthony fauci. This is the group that served as a voice for the nations medical schools and Teaching Hospitals and they write this, as we are seeing from the surge in covid19 cases in areas that have reopened, science and facts, not Wishful Thinking or politics must guide americas response to this pandemic. America should be applauding dr. Fauci for his service and following his advice, not undermining his credibility at this critical time. Joining me now is dr. Ross mckinney, the chief director for the association. Doctor, thank you for being here. You write that discrediting the science will do tremendous harm. Why is this so damaging to not just look to truth and fact, but also when it comes to just truth and fact, but also when youre facing this current Public Health crisis . Well, this is an unprecedented epidemic that were dealing with and full of confusing and difficult information to understand. So people need help translating and understanding what is going on. An go authoritative clear voices like dr. Fauci is critical in this kind of situation. If this, which is discrediting dr. Fauci, is part of the strategy for the federal governments response to this unprecedented crisis, what do you think that means for the countrys trajectory out of this . I would like to know, doctor, what you would want to say to the president as hes about to walk into the rose garden and hold a press conference . I would hope he would be supportive of the Public Health officials, the people at the cdc, dr. Fauci and others in the government who are trying their best to think of the Publics Health first. And speaking honestly about what they think are the best and most appropriate ways for us to move forward in this epidemic. Was this what you to the point of needing and wanting to speak out as a collective group and as an individual. Was it was this the straw that broke the camels back, what was it about what was being said about dr. Fauci that led to this very Public Statement . What led to the statement at least for me was the fundamental dishonesty that the group used and it was somebody within the white house apparently, but doing things like quoting part of one of faucis statements and acting as if that was his opinion when, in fact, he said at this point in time, you dont have to modify your daytoday behavior. That was february 29th. And then he went on to say, but, this could change if this if we see community spread. They left out the critical part. That was really the message that dr. Fauci was trying to make. So the straw that broke the camels back for us was when they were doing maneuvers that demonstrated they didnt want a legitimate conversation. They wanted to use traditional, i would say political maneuvers, to discredit somebody who is worthy of our admiration. Do you think, as Kaitlan Collins was just reporting, that some in the white house think the damage is done in terms of efforts to discredit dr. Fauci. Do you think the damage is done . I dont think the damage is done. I think america has watched dr. Fauci for 30 years be a spokesperson, they know his degree of honesty, they know how much he is willing to speak up for what he thinks is the public good. And i think that the damage is not done. He will retain that credibility in an ongoing basis. I want to lean on another area of expertise. Year head of the pediatric Infectious Diseases at duke. Youre the perfect person to ask about this because it is hanging in the back of my mind. On what we know and dont know about the virus and children, we keep hearing different things, doctor, just from the White House Task force on what we know and dont and what you could take from it. I want to play just an example of that. First it is secretary of health and Human Services alex azar and then deborah birx. Children are must less susceptible to severe outcomes than adults. Until we know how many have been infected we have no evidence that there is significant mortality in children without crowe existing diseases. And that is what were looking for right now, is to really make sure weve overturned every rock and understand that in deep detail. And dr. Birx was saying there is a lack of testing which means data in terms of children and the and the disease. Why do we know so little about the virus and how it impacts kids . I think actually the reason we know so little about the disease and children is that it is milder in kids. And they are less likely to get infected. And so people tend not to test them. A. , theyre most likely to get infected, under ten is less likely to get infected and have severe disease so people dont test them. And when they do test, theyre outcomes have been better. So it is a surprise. This is very different than in where children are the vectors who carried it through the community. In this particular case is looks like children are not as much a part of driver of the infection. Children get less symptoms and theyre less likely to transmit to others. It is still so much unknown and so much uncertainty. It is a scary thing to figure out. Doctor, thank you so much for being here. Thank you very much. Cases have skyrocketed in the weeks since the state has announced the governor announced that the state would reopen in may. In houston where hospitals are hovering at capacity and running out of icu beds the mayor said they need to close back down for at least two weeks to try and get a handle on this spread. Listen to this. Were moving in the wrong direction. So this is an opportunity where we have to reassess and recognize that we just need to hit the reset button. Joining me now, Dallas County judge clay jenkins. It is good to have you back on. So you have the mayor of houston, the Harris County judge calling for a twoweek shutdown. Do you think they need to shut down to get out of this tail spin . We sent the governor a letter asking him to shut certain businesses where you cannot wear your mask 100 of the time, like in a restaurant dining, to close day care to only essential workers. Thus far he hasnt even been willing to close cigar bars. Obviously you cant wear a mask and smoke a cigar in annen closed space. So were asking the governor to do what our local doctors are requesting. Do you think a complete shutdown might be necessary in Dallas County . If the governor refuses to act, the longer he waits the more that will be necessary. At this point, the doctors think, at least here, things are better here than in houston, but they think here he could do less than that. That is what theyve been saying for the last three weeks and hes failed to act. So if he continues on the path of not acting then a shutdown will be necessary. And just a note for viewers, judge, we have the same conversation when you were on two weeks ago when you had just sent this letter to the and he still has not gone any further or responded to what youre asking for and saying your county needs, because youre listening to the medical experts. Do you think dallas schools can reopen for inperson learning next month . No. I think we can open for learning virtually, but im putting together a team of experts, pediatric Infectious Disease doctors, education experts to look at this. Right now, our superintendent is asking that we look for sometime after labor day. I believe that could be a while after labor day. But it is a tough decision and one that will have to pull the experts together and make a good decision on. And i talked to the superintendent of dallas schools and hes trying his best. But hearing from you, you dont think it is possible, i think it is extremely noteworthy with the direction things are going now in texas. The cdc director was just speaking and he said in his opinion he was happy to see the president and Vice President were now Wearing Masks in certain places but said the president and the Vice President need to wear masks in order to set the example. Do you agree . Do you need that in Dallas County . Absolutely. Because there are people that listen to everything that the president says and he is their leader. And hes our nations leader. So when he models that it is not that serious to wear a mask or he didnt think it is manly to wear a mask, it makes others not want to wear the mask. And we know now that the mask is the single most important thing we can do to protect each other from the virus. It is like a a vaccine in a mask, if youre wearing your mask and youre sick, you probably wouldnt infect others if they are sick they probably wont infect us. So it is very important that we do that. The president needs to step up and be a leader. A huge part of the equation is testing and i just saw that you said you are taking over testing for your county. No longer relying on federal government. Why is that, judge . They were taking eight to ten days for a test. And these are we have Medicaid Expansion in texas so these are people who are out there keeping the economy going, working and when you they will them you have to stay home for eight to ten days for your test result, it is just not possible to feed their family and do that. And so it wasnt working at all. Were going to take it over. Were going to do those tests and in two days or less, turn around in two days or less and we appreciate the federal offer but i politely declined. You have the to take two days over eight days when this is a matter of life and death talking about getting the test results back and slowing and stopping and containing the spread. We have breaking news just in. Weve just learned that the Trump Administration is now reversing its directive that would have forced all Foreign College students to leave the country if they had to take all of their Classes Online this fall. This is a total reversal coming from the Trump Administration. Lets get over to Shimon Prokupecz following this playing out in a courtroom in massachusetts. It was harvard and mit leading this but what are you hearing from the judge. Reporter as you said, a complete reversal from the government. You have to wonder what they were thinking in the beginning of this. And how unfair and cruel in many respects this is. For many of the students in this country studying, researching, doing all sorts of things you would expect students to do for the government, for this administration to come in and say because of the coronavirus, and now because many schools like harvard behind me do not want to do inperson classes and take everything to online, youre going to have to leave. The government was sued by harvard and mit and schools all across the country from l. A. To new york joined in the lawsuit and the hearing, it was on phone, kate, because of the coronavirus. You cant go to a courtroom. It only lasted minutes. The judge took the bench, and she said okay, i understand there is an agreement here and the one government lawyer on the phone said yes weve come to an agreement. And it is as if they never thought of this. Theyre rescinding it and we could go back to normal. And think about the students been here dealing with this decision now for months wondering what they will do and some may have already left. It is unclear. And also the institutions, the schools who rely so much on foreign students. Not only for the economy and the money, but the cultural experience for everyone involved. So for sure, kate, i think this is going to be a welcome relief for many people who are here, studying and the schools such as harvard behind me who led this fight with mit. Absolutely. Shimon, thank you so much for bringing us this breaking news. Joining me right now is david lee, the president of Rice University. Thank you so much for being here. This is actually something i was going to ask you about even before this just coming in from this lawsuit. You have been Rice University has been supporting harvard and mit along with many other schools in trying to fight this directive coming from the administration. Youve been very outspoken against this. What is your reaction now . Well im really delighted to hear this for the worry for our students. As we said, we thought the original rule that were suggested were cruel and misguided and didnt serve our universities, didnt serve our students and frankly didnt serve our country. So were delighted at this reversal. I want to thank harvard and mit for filing this suit and which we joined in a brief. This is just great news for our students, and i think, as you said, it is not just great news for International Students, it is great news for all of our students and for the future of our country into terms of what our International Students contribute to our country and what they do when they graduate. This is a very sensible decision and im grateful for the reversal of the governments position on this. And in that amicus brief that Rice University filed you talk about some of the students that would be impacted here. Some of the foreign students, what they are researching and contributing and already doing here in the United States. You do have to wonder, shimon, my colleague posed this question, i would like to get your take on what the administration was thinking to begin with in putting this directive in place . Well, im not sure. There was a suggestion that they really wanted to put pressure on the universities like k through 12 to be open in the fall. Our current plans are to be open in a very careful way. So that is one possibility. But i think it is also an illustration that when you have a kind of xenophobic attitude, it is and ultimately it results in things that make absolutely no sense at all in terms of Good Government policy. And i think that is what weve seen here. And it is good to see it withdrawn. Would you like i would like to see a much more proactive approach to welcoming people to this country and particularly to welcoming International Students. So it will be a welcome, welcome, welcome announcement to many students at Rice University and far beyond. You talked about how y planning to reopen in a careful fashion come the fall. Rice is literally trying to trying a very unique way, a solution to kind of the biggest problem is how do you bring people back on campus to teach in person and keep them socially distanced. Youre putting up, i was seeing, an opensided tents on campus to try to teach students in the safest way possible which is classrooms outdoors. How is this going to work . Well, so were constructing nine tents on our campus for our we call them semi permanent, probably be up for a period of years, that creates larger spaces, spaces that we do accommodate larger group. We wont allow classes of more than 25 or gatherings of more than 50 and well constantly review that guidance at rice. I think for the opensided tents, as it were, that creates a lot of air flowing through, all of the scientist and research that weve seen suggests that one factor in creating a safer environment. And all of this is about, as you said, the physical distancing of our students, having students and other people, all people on the campus wear a mask, having them not engage in unnecessary tact and being outdoors and if you put all of measures together we believe that we could maintain a safe environment for our students and faculty. That said, were also giving people a choice and so were planning what we call dual delivery or some call it hybrid delivery so students could choose, do they want to be on campus going to classes or prefer to take them remotely. How does what is happening in the community in houston impact your decisions on schools because we know that the mayor of houston is saying that the city needs to be shutting down for two weeks. The state does. And if you look at our screen you could see the numbers of cases that are just being hit just monday in the houston area and in texas. Which were breaking records. How does what is happening in houston impact what is happening in a university in houston in rice . Well we have to pay close attention to that in two different respects. One, we have to pay close attention to the risks on our campus. We think weve adopted policies including testing and adequate quarantining and isolation facilities and make sure students follow the rules and maintain the safety on our campus and so well constantly evaluate that. But the second aspect is making sure that medical care is available. So were following very closely the accuracy of the hospital beds and the Texas Medical Center and right now that seems to be under a fair amount of control but we have concerns as the numbers have been increasing rightly and will continue to watch that closely as we approach the fall. Having to be flexible and nimble is unfortunately an absolute necessity at this moment. As you were jumping on in the breaking news, i appreciate this. Thank you very much for your time. Good luck in the fall. Thank you so much. So it is the summer of covid. The summer of protest. And now a summertime surge in crime. This just into cnn, the head of the cdc offering a very Bleak Outlook for the fall and winter in the fight against the coronavirus. Dr. Red ford saying the following in a webinar just now, i do think the fall and winter of 2020 and 2021 are probably going to be one of the most difficult times we experience in american Public Health. A frightening projection for sure. But also a very good wakeup call in this moment. Were listening into dr. Robert redfield and bring you more headlines as they do come. There is also this. Something you have absolutely heard before. I cant get it again because i already had covid. Weve heard people say things like this but is it at all true when it comes to covid19 . That is a major question right now. Listen to what the World Health Organization has said about this just yesterday. What we dont know is how strong that protection is and for how long that protection will last. And so there are a number of studies underway that are trying to answer these questions. This comes as a new study out of the u. K. Suggests immunity might be short and temporary. Researchers finding a steep dropoff within three months of ante bodies present in people recovered from covid19 and those are the proteins the body makes to fight off infections. I had a lot of questions so let me bring in dr. Mala manny, from University College london. Shes reviewed these findings in this study. Doctor, thank you for being here. This is a big study and getting attention as it joins a growing body of evidence that Natural Immunity to this virus does not last as long as we hoped. What sticks out to you here . Well, this is a study to look for this length of time, 90 days after infection. And to start to give us more information about the duration of immunity. Up until now what it is showing is that in patients with a severe illness of covid, they mount a stronger response that is shown by a number of studies already. Then they have to stockpile the infection and so they seem to last the longest which is the good news people who had a bad outcome, if they survive, they will have longer lasting immune responses, majority have still good antibodies at 90 days. What they found, if you have a mild infection, like a lot of people do, it is similar to the common cold Coronavirus Infection where it goes away quickly and by 90 days the ones that are important for blocking the entry of the virus will become undetectible. And this has raised a lot of questions in my mind about Antibody Testing. If you get the results that are negative, telling you that you dont have antibodies present, what does that actually tell you now and what does it not . Yeah, i mean this is really that seems to be waning to detection and maybe that other antibodies will be in people but [ inaudible ]. So it means that just because you had a negative test say in a months time, you cant look back and say i definitely havent had covid. It wont be a totally reliable diagnostic test for looking at the prevalence of the infection. And i think an effective way perhaps which we need to look into more now is whether t cells might be a more sensitive way of picking up people who had the infection. So t cells are another type of way of fighting viruses which are very important for helping us to make good antibody responses but also for directly recognizing the cells once they get infected with the virus. It puts up little flags that tells t cells to kill that cell safely and not kill the healthy cells. So another really important part of our immune response. And we know from one infection that happened in 2003 that there are still t cell protection in those people up to 17 years later whereas the antibody result has been undetectible in a couple of years. So looking at who is how many people have been exposed and also the potential memory immune response, i think looking at the t cells is very important. This is fascinating and something obviously that requires more research and requires more brilliant piends like yours but i find it fascinating, reminding me if you get a Antibody Test it doesnt tell you as much as you might want it to. Jeff sessions is trying to win back his Old Senate Seat. Can he get past todays public runoff . And can he get past President Trump . A wild race is happening today in alabama. Jeff sessions is trying to make a political comeback. Donald trump is not on the ballot, but he might as well be when you look at how this election is shaping up. Sessions is fighting for his Old Senate Seat against former auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville. Its getting heated in no small measure because President Trump is not trying to help out his former attorney general, the exact opposite. Just listen to this robo call that trump recorded for Tommy Tuberville. Tommy tuberville is going to do a job like you havent seen. Hes going to take over and hes going to be representing you and representing you well. Hes going to have a call direct line into my office. Cold direct line to my office. Jeff, what is going on with this race . Theres no question the president made a decision to insert himself directly into this race. He still is carrying a race against Jeff Sessions. He has called it the worst decision of his presidency to appoint him as attorney general, because Jeff Sessions recused himself in the russia investigation as he was advised to do by the lawyers at the justice department. As Jeff Sessions went back to alabama trying to get his old job back, he has run for that seat four times before. Usually does not have any opposition at all. This time hes running against Tommy Tuberville which will be hard enough, and President Trump as well. But earlier today after voting, Jeff Sessions had this to say about whos controlling this race. Well, the president has a right to speak up. But the president is not on the ballot. He will be on the balance ballot in november. But Tommy Tuberville is on the ballot. The people of alabama are going to choose who their senator is. And that certainly is the hope of Jeff Sessions, the people of alabama chooses. But the reality is in deep red alabama, President Trump does carry some sway. But, kate, this will be a key test of how much sway he indeed carries in this race. Watching all this is doug jones, the most imperilled democrat. He of course won the special election a couple years ago in alabama. So a critical race here.
