Period of time and not supposed to be used if someone is not resisting and all of that is now no longer part of the Minneapolis Police practices and procedures. In addition to that, theyve told Police Officers that they now have to not only report it if those sort of controversial moves are used, but they must intervene at the time that those types of moves, maneuvers are used. In that same order, theyve also said that nonlethal use of pepper spray or of teargas like weve seen so much in the city, that now has to be signed off by the police chief himself. Also they want theyve signed off on civilian review of body cam footage and also want quicker discipline decisions. And that is also now signed off on. But not only in minneapolis but across the country the concerns go deep into the justice system, not just policing and practices. So i think this is certainly more welcome news here but i think people want more now. They want to see equality as a very deep level and that will take years and lots of pushing and effort from the federal level down to the states to get to the level that people here would like to see. Brooke. It is a start. Its a start. Miguel marquez, thank you. And as the world prepares for an 11th day of protests in the wake of George Floyds death, shocking video of new incidents of Police Brutality during protests and elsewhere. Posted on youtubesy woman is shown being body slammed, by an atlanta officer outside of lennox mall. You heard her screaming during the first night of demonstrations. Cnn doesnt know what preceded the incident, let me say that, which moves to her lifted by the arm while handcuffed. We have reached out to the Atlanta Police department for comment including a Police Officer and to determine if the officer is facing any disciplinary action and we have yet to hear back now. Lets talk about buffalo, new york. A 75yearold man is in the hospital in serious by stable condition as being, watch it, knocked down by police and suffered a head injury that left him bleeding on the sidewalk. The governor of new york said the video made him sick to his stomach. I just spoke with the man on the phone, who was that gentleman, who thankfully is alive. But you see that video and it disturbs your basic sense of decency and humanity. Why . Why . Why was that necessary . Where was the threat . Older gentleman where was the threat. And then you just walk by the person while you see blood coming from his head. And Police Officers walked by. Its just fundamentally offensive. Its just frightening. Its frightening. Alexander field is with me now and what is also disturbing is that the initial Police Officer on this incident was changed only once the video surfaced. So tell us what officials said initially and now what theyre saying. Reporter you heard the governor calling this frightening. And it is. The series of events are disturbing as well. Police put out a statement saying initially that this man had injured himself after he tripped and fell. You saw the video. It is clear that he is knocked down. The mayor of buffalo came out and said it was clear that two officers shoved this 75yearold man to the ground. A spokesperson has said that the initial report was based on a single video and that other additional videos then became available which changed the citys understanding apparently of what had happened. But again, if you see the video, it is clear what happened. And that is why the mayor was deeply disturbed and distressed by what he saw. He said the Police Commissioner shared his view, the two officers were immediately suspended without pay. That an investigation was launched and now you have the erie County District attorney investigating what happened. Investigators has not been able to speak to the 75yearold man pushed to the ground and left there bleeding from his head but Governor Cuomo was able to speak to him and that is a good sign. Thank you, alex. And just over the course of the last week are also noteworthy because of the trend observed. An altercation takes place, police put out an inaccurate report of about what happened and denying involvement and then videos go viral and then only the department is forced to clarify. Why is it the first instinct of some Police Officers to lie. With me now, rapper, activist, friend, michael render otherwise known as killer mike. So, mike, you know i love you. Thank you so much for coming on. I have a lot of questions for you. So lets start about this. Your dad was an Atlanta Police officer and your cousin is an officer at east point and ive been in your shop and you invite others to mingle with the community and in buffalo, initially and in minneapolis with george floyd and in the arrest of our own correspondent one week ago. What do you want to say about that . I want to say shame on those Police Officers because they make policing more dangerous for other Police Officers and they make it supremely dangerous to the public. The public should not have to worry that the people will pay to serve and protect them could potentially be the person taking their lives and lying about the circumstances and i would like to take the time to point people to an Instagram Account called mr. Checkpoint. He has a philosophy that said always film the police. There is another legal one. Pat brothers in law and they suggest that you make yourself aware of your rights. It is time that we stop complaining about the evils that the system creates in these type of officers and become proactive like the atlanta citizens review board and punish Police Officers that lie because that is the ultimate betrayal of public trust. I want to talk about solutions in a second but i read the New York Times this morning there was a powerful opinion piece by wesley morris. The most urgent film making anybody is doing in this country right now is by black people with camera phones. Absolutely. Absolutely. Its technology that has finally allowed the truth to come out, where lies once existed and i want people to understand that black people have been enduring this vigilantelike atmosphere that went on in brunswick, georgia, and police with warrants that they arent sure about and lie about like the death of breonna. We were here during the lynching and hanging period and the slave period and weve been telling people this is happening and finally when cameras happen, when a 75yearold white man is nearly killed two weeks after a black man in buffalo on camera, they shoved that man as they were walking past a forgotten jewish person and they were walking into the death chamber. It is evil. And it is not that im pointing out and saying each individual officer is evil. The system of policing has become something that is corrupt and we have to change the policing in america so that citizens dont have to be afraid of the people that we pay to protect. So lets talk about that. When you look at the case just in minneapolis with george floyd, the four officers, theyve now all been charged but this is far from over as you point out. The system is broken. So when it comes to policing in this country, mike yes. Give me specifics. What three things could happen at any individual Police Department to ensure a change of culture in police . The biggest thing that could happen is empower citizen review boardsment if the police are our Public Servants then the public needs a board to oversee them and this should be comparable to any chief or internal investigator or anything internally. We need a review board outside of the Police Department to police the Police Department. We also need to change the culture of drug war policing. Drug war policing makes no sense to the point why you would put dea agents in crowds at protests. So i would say citizens review boards, i would say legislation to change the militarization of. We dont need police in tanks or full riot gear because most of the time there are not reason to have tanks or full riot gear on any streets. And ultimately the third i dont know. I think that we should defer to the people already doing the work to increase the stop of violence and i think there are National Organizations that do that and those are the ones i would think should lead. And i thought about the white house this week, the rubber bullets and the teargas as the president was talking to the church for what was quite literally a photo on and i have to ask you he was in the rose garden today and he invoked George Floyds name in case anyone has missed this, roll it. We saw what happened last week. We cant let that happen. Hopefully george is looking down right now and saying this is a great thing that is happening for our country. This is a great day for him, a great day for everybody. And then just to juxtapose, you have the president saying not only 24 hours ago, he shared this letter on twitter that referred to the Peaceful Protesters who were forcibly dispersed from a park near the white house on monday, he was referring to them as terrorists. So you have terrorists, mike, and this is a great day. Yeah. To me tone deaf. What do you think . Im just disgusted that i would think that a black man was murdered by four Police Officers who were truly cowards in uniform would look down and approve of the way this country is now treating other citizens. I think mr. Floyd would be disgusted by the put up and asking young black men to look positive and change their life. And complaining about the evils of this country, i have no doubt that he would be disgusted. I have no doubt that he would firmly be on the side of the protesters and the rioters and then the organizers who are organizing to make sure that the evil that is in the system loses. In terms of mr. Trump, you know what you got. America promoted a kroes owner to the highest office in the land and now youre dealing with it. But the question is what will you do in november. What are you going to do past november and on a local level to plan and strategize and mobilize and there are people already doing this work and they need bodies and more hands on deck and after the protest it is our job to find them and seek them out to find them and to help them fight against the highest office, the highest person in office in this land because the things that are being said are borderline evil, not just disgusting. Speaking of the Nations Highest Office or i know weve talked, youre so passionate about all things local. Any office, mike, a lot of people want to know if you would run. Im going to ask you. If you would run, hold on that. Were back with killer mike in just a moment. Works i am proof i lost 85 pounds we can do this get the ww triple play, offer ends june 8th 100 online car buying. Welcome back. Youre watching cnn, im brooke baldwin. Killer mike is standing by. Well pick up on our conversation in a moment. But first new details about the killing of Ahmaud Arbery during a preliminary hearing in which an investigator testified that his killer used a racial slur after shooting the unarmed black man in a georgia neighborhood. Cnns Martin Savidge is in brunswick, georgia. What have you learned . Reporter brooke, many in the community and in this case are still reeling from the testimony of yesterday where the prosecution seemed to deliberately interject the suggestion that it was overt racism, at least on part of one of the suspects that played into potentially the death of 25yearold Ahmaud Arbery, a young black man running through the neighborhood back in february. The prosecutors outlined that day as three men, that is travis and gregory mcmichael, the son and father and one William Roddy bryan used a pickup truck to chase him through the neighborhood aggressively and used their vehicles to stop him and cut him off as it appeared he was trying to flee from the neighborhood and the prosecution sort of described it as a hunt. They used those very vivid kind of terms. It was also revealed that cell phone video that many of us have now seen that captures the moment at which he is killed, apparently there is more of that video. That is the cell phone of William Roddy bryan, would seem to imply of why he was arrested and accused of being more of a participant and not just an observer. And then the racial hatred. It was introduced under testimony who essentially said that the research in the investigation determined there were a number of posts by travis mcmichael, the man who killed Ahmaud Arbery that are racist and then they recount something overheard by William Rodney bryan as they are standing over the body just after he is killed. This is that moment in testimony. Mr. Bryan said that after the shooting took place before police arrival, while mr. Arbery was on the ground, he heard Travis Michael make the statement [ bleep ]. Reporter and just to be clear what is said there is fing and nword. It is a curse and then a racial slur. It stunned the courtroom. But the point being made by many here is that it will not impact the case. Because, as you know, in georgia there is no hate law. So they will be tried for murder. But they cant be tried as part of a hate crime attached to it. Unless, and this is what many people hope will happen, is that the federal government gets involved and the fbi and the d. O. J. Department of justice investigate this as a hate crime on the federal level. Brooke. Martin, thank you. In georgia. And let me bring back killer mike. Ahmaud arbery, george floyd, today would have been Breonna Taylors birthday. I keep going. To your point a second ago if we dont like what is happening in this country, go vote. You are saying and George Floyds family and barack obama is saying it. But how do address the apathy in the public. And i heard you rapping about it very viscerally in walking in the snow. How do you address it . I say truly the tragedy, youve been robbed, empathy replaced with apathy and i describe theyre coming for you after theyre coming for me and you could tell a black man is suffocated two weeks prior and then a white man is pushed over again as walking into an internment camp and now hes in the hospital. The system is going to crush whoever opposed it and so we have to understand when we talk about systemic things, the day after all black people are in control or whatever a racist things, please understand theyre coming for you. It sickens me at this point in this country we dont understand that it is truly the us versus the timely amount of masters that we have. Even my criticism of President Trump, the same could be said about barack obama or bush 1 or 2 and back to any president that unite because police have been given autonomy to do this. So it is a system we fight. It is a philosophical, evil in the system, that places us below people that we give authority over us and that is something that we have to overturn within my lifetime. And it wont take years. It takes the decision of the American Public to say this ends now. This system ends now as with you know it and it will never exist again. I was texting about you this morning with keisha lance bottoms, mayor of atlanta, and i asked keisha to just talk about you. This is what she texted me back. Killer mike represents all that atlanta could ever hope to be. He is a son of our community. He fights for our community. He works to create and elevate excellence in our community. He speaks our truth and the world listens. And i know mayor bottoms is doing her own excellent work in atlanta and has been floated as a potential vp candidate for joe biden. But back to you, mike. Would you run for office . I would run a lot of places. As im running to try to lose some more weight. I never thought of running for any office past a local level. I never thought of running past anything that would say school board or city council. Ive always flirted with the idea jokingly in my mind but at some point in the feature it would not be wild to expect me to run for office because i see in a need in my local community. I want to say this to people on the other side camera, im a rapper and i sing and dance and before i was a Community Organizers and then a product of the call your heights community, and google that and thank you to dr. Samuel hill who led the school when i was there who made sure like me, perform for excellence and not just average. So if and when i do run for office, know that i will try to be an excellent public serve an and into the just average. I also want to tell people that are organizing on the ground, you run for office and let me come out and support you in any way i can. You mentioned clair heights. It was a year ago in the spring where you took me to your home where you were raised. Were have different parts of atlanta. We had very different experiences growing up but weve become friends. And i so admire you. And the best, mike, the best piece of advice you gave me some years ago after we talked about what happened to mike brown in ferguson and you said, brooke, make sure you have friends that dont look like you, dont go to the same church as you and i want you to, for folks who are not on the inside of the conversation and especially in this climate, why is that so damn important. It is important because my friends are the Short Brothers who helped produce my album and a who directed my Television Show and jaggy malline and brother and rap partner and my friends are diverse tapestry of people and like seth gold bloom tells us, youre representing and connecting people by be willing to befriend and ally and be brothers and sisters with people who arent like us and it is high time we do it. Racism has only existed for 500 years because the Catholic Church gave permission to the portuguese and the spanish to subjugate human beings to use some for labor. We know that. We could undo that. Jaden elliott told us we could do it in 20 years and that is why i advise all of my white friends to watch our blue eyes, brown eyes experiment because once you are taught that by an educator, once that happens your mind is open to understanding and seeing the true history and change it. I believe that it is possible, it is only possible if we engage in selfeducation and in our Education System changes in a way that we arent reproducing the same thing. Racism is only 500 years old. We could get rid of racism in our lifetime if we choose to. Killer mike, you are a special human indeed. I could talk to you all hour. I appreciate it. Seriously. Thank you so much. Love and appreciate you. Im glad that you got better. And beat covid. Thank your wife for sending me the vitamins. So bless shay. Love. Love. Coming up, the former white house cleave of staff kelly agrees with mattis on the president and the nation and why did a couple of people who slammed george floyd into a meeting on race. Youre watching cnn. Im brooke baldwin. Were back in a minute. They are compelled to step forward. To the front lines. And into the unknown. For all of us. Former white house chief of staff john kelly is a joining the list of people criticizing President Trump for the unrest facing the country. In a new interview general kelly agreed with general james mattis assertion that the president has divided the nation and made a mockery of the constitution. Hes quite a man, general jim mattis and for him to do that tells you where he is relative to the concern he has for the country. Do you agree with him, john . I agree with him. I think we need to step back from the politics. I they we need to look harder at who we elect. I think we should start all of us regardless of what our views are in politics, i think we should look at people that are running for office and put them through the filter. What is their character like, what is their what are their ethics. With me now cnn White House Correspondent Kaitlan Collins and Political Correspondent abby phillip. So kaitlan, first to you, any response on john kellys comments today . Reporter not publicly at least. There are a few officials talking about it behind the scenes. But it is just so stunning, brooke, to see and im not sure this is ever happened where youve seen the former chief of staff and former defense secretary come out while the president is still in office and offer such a staging assessment of his leadership. And if you cover the white house and talk to white house sources these are things that general mattis and john kelly have been saying behind the scenes for sometime since they left the white house. Neither of them left on good terms. Mattis resigned in protest over the president s decision. Kelly was pushed out of the job for someone else to take over because he and the president were on such bad terms when he was leaving that they were barely speaking to one another. But to see them come out publicly and say this and for kelly to say he agrees with mattis, questioning the president s leadership and saying there is a lack of leadership in the United States for last three years is remarkable to see the president s former top officials turning into his own main critics while hes still in office. That is extraordinary. Also that this big picture of d. C. Is extraordinary this week. Abby, on one hand you have the president sharing a letter referring to the protesters as terrorists and adding the huge fencing around the perimeter and now the road outside of the white house has a giant painting black lives matter and renamed the area black lives matter plaza and the president attacked the d. C. Mayor calling her incompetent. What a contrast. This is a longrunning feud between the president and the city that he currently is living in. And its only going to get worse from here. The president has insisted that his show of force earlier this week is responsible for the protests being largely peaceful for the last couple of nights. No arrests in d. C. Last night and the night before but muriel bowser, the mayor of d. C. , is saying we want federal Law Enforcement out of the city. We dont need you here. And shes making a bold statement by putting down black lives matter outside of the white house. Again, ive said this repeatedly for a week and a half now and ill keep saying it until it changes, this white house continues to not want to address the fundamental underlying issues of how black people in this country believe that the system is not working for them. He does not want to address systemic racism at all. And until he does, i think youre going to continue to see the divide existing not just in washington, but all across the country. This is a white house that wants to appeal to black voters or they say they do but they still remain hesitant to actual wly address what is boiling up from the grassroots of the country all the way to washington, d. C. Abby, so well put. Thank you very much for that. And kaitlan, i appreciate you as well. How stunning this has been. Coming up, the demand for justice is showing no signs of slowing down. The clear message here, it is time for systematic change. But how do you bring about that change. Who are the ones with the pouter to do it . Thats next. More protests across the country are expected tonight and in through the weekend. Still folks you demanding justice pushing for muchneeded Police Reform in the wake of George Floyds death and over the last couple of nights the scenes really have been for the most part peaceful and the fight, the message is loud and clear. Ejoma lull is from the establishment and author of the book so you want to talk about race and it is an honor to have you on. And you have been doing this work on race and injustice for years. You wrote your book for people to educate themselves all of the time, not just in these moments but every time there is a senseless killing of a black or brown person in this country, ive heard you say that your book sells out. How does that make you feel . Its kind of traumatizing in a way. Honestly, because in between these major News Headlines countless people of people are lost to not just Police Brutality but systemic racism in general throughout this country. And i would really love the collective that i know that people have love for us and sustain the racism throughout the year instead of waiting for this sort of brutality. Despite the struggle, despite the years, centuries of trauma, something that really struck me that i heard you say recently is that black people in this country should be proud. Tell me why that is so important to say and to hear right now. I think it is so important to recognize that for over 400 years we have lived in a system that has wanted to kill us. That has wanted to extract our labor and leave us broken. And we are still here. And we are still creating. We are still loving each other and holding each other up. Were Building Communities and that is something that we have to be incredibly proud of. It shouldnt be this hard. I dont believe in glorifying resilience. But i do believe that everything that we accomplish. Weve accomplished in the face of violent White Supremacy and we should be proud as a people that were here. Im so grateful for every black person that is here. As for white folks, you said a few things. To white folks who truly are allies, watch out for your seemingly progressive friends that want you, to explain what you mean by that and also why you say white folks shouldnt go down the rabbit hole and try to educate their racist uncle and i want to understand why not. Yes, i want people to understand that this is a common distraction technique. To focus on the most committed racist and say we must win over these people who are have already made their Bold Decision as to where they feel about black lives in this country and lives of people of color. Instead, we should be looking at the majority of people who say that racism is wrong, who believe that there is a problem that needs to be fixed and say how can we Work Together to fix it but people will show up in times like this and try to get you to debate about the value of our lives. If you know our lives have value, move past that debate and Start Talking strategy and start getting together with fellow white people who also believe in black lives and believe that people of color deserve to live free from brutality and free from systemic racism and start making change in your community. Focus on what you could do to help us in our fight. Instead of trying to win over that one stubborn committed racist in your life. Ive been so mindful of just the next generation as ive been covering all of this. So i know you have two sons, 12 and 18. Yes. And the first time i would guess that either of them, this is the first time theyve seen such extraordinary widespread activism, not just in america but weve seen the pictures in europe, the photo of the graffiti i cant breathe in syria. But when you look at what is happening through the eyes of your sons, that is my final question, do you this is your life work. Do you see it differently this time and do your boys have hope . Yes. Definitely my boys have hope. And its been interesting watching them see these protests and trying to calculate the anger that theyre seeing out there such wide scale and it was sad to realize they dont quite have that level of trauma yet, especially my 12yearold but one day they might. But also seeing the progress being made, people of all races and ethnicity standing together, they are hopeful and sharing stories and looking things up and asking a lot of questions, talking with their friends. Young people are leading this movement right now. And that is so encouraging because they have so much more imagine and fire than we do and they havent been blunted by decades of this and they still believe in the possibility of a Better Future and willing to fight for it.
